Very bad at explaining coarse topics. Exams are not reflective of homework assigned in class. He is the lesser evil out of the horrible math profs so take hime with caution!
Goes pretty fast, good at explaining stuff and helping with questions. BOOYA!!
Can't read his notes, does not allow calculators. He's an ok teacher. If you need this class, I recommend taking Agre.
One of the best math teachers I have ever had. He goes pretty fast through the material, but he has to. He needs to get through all of it, to get you ready for Calc II. Nice guy, and is a pretty fair grader. Take him.

Had him for calc and diff eq. Just awesome. had agre for calc 2 and was nowhere near as good as branson. Very approachable.
He is by far the best teacher I've ever had. He seems tough in class (talks fast), but he is just trying to scare you away. When you approach him in his office he will spend as much time as he can to make sure you get it. Fair at grading, he knows A LOT!
Bill was a great teacher. Easy to follow and very approachable.
very clear, and organized
The class is hard but he does everything that he can do to help you understand. Really helpful one-on-one.
I dont know what those guys were talking about when they bashed him, he's a great math professor. Hes fun to talk to, interesting, and besides that he teaches the class well and has a good understanding of whats going on. Definately take him. And take Haglin for physics!
excellent teacher, class is challenging in a good way. good grades are achievable if you do the homework. I learn a lot from his classes.
his class is too awesome. Even though i dont know what he is doing and by reading his notes compare to the textbook, it is far more easy to understand than reading the book . highly recommended to take his class .
branson was always very helpful. we had a lot of quizzes, but that just made sure that we were keeping up with the homework. he explains the information in the book very well.
Overall did a great job teaching the course. However, at the end of the semester he ran out of time and went through too many topics in too short of time, but was willing to help students and even added extra office hours.
awesome professor, uses curves that fit the whole class on tests that help grade out. very easy to understand. recommend taking him.
Great prof. He really knows his stuff. Really moves quick in class so make sure you ask questions if you got 'em. Very fair in his grading, just make sure you study enough. I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone.
AWESOME TEACHER!! He is very intelligent and has a passion for math. I highly recommend him! He is one of the most helpful proffesors I have met. TAKE HIS CLASSES!! You'll love it!
This was an awful subject, but he was a great teacher. He steps through everything and will always answer questions that you have. I suggest that you take him if he's teaching it.
I Love Branson...he was awesome. He makes hard material seem easy and doable. He is very casual and approachable. Someone you could really talk to. You must do your homework because theres a quiz every friday...for our own good. AWESOME GRADER..no calculators allowed.
Good professor, but fairly difficult class.
Very good professor. Tests are fair and on what was taught. Very easy going!
Professor not very helpful..he would tell me during his office hours that he has a lot to do, and to make it short! Excuse me that is what office hours is for..to help students! His tests are very difficult. He gives you a quiz every Tuesday. No calculators either in the whole course...yet he gives you problems that need calculators..get new prof!!!
Nice, laid back guy, but he just didn't work for me. He assigned loads of problems to do and a quiz every tuesday which was supposedly based on the homework. Flew through the subject matter and bored me to death. No calculators, even when the problems sometimes called for one. In the end, I flat out failed, so don't take this prof!
Dr.Branson rocks!!! Probably the best math teacher ever, truly a king of kings. Not to mention that he really knows his anime,
he is not the teacher to teach math. if u want to get good grade dont take class with him.i got B+ but i suggest you not to take class with him.
Calc is hard obviously, but I started out with some Chinese lady that I couldn’t understand worth a crap, but then I switched to Branson. He answers any question you have, and goes over stuff thoroughly in class. Moves a little fast, but that is a consequence of the material.
Wow, I cant believe that there are people suggesting that others should take a different professor. Branson is the best professor I have had in the math department so far. There really aren't many better options. 1. Branson 2. Walk Huang or Hubbard. Branson is clear and extrememly focused and organized. If possible I wouldn't take anyone else.
he is a nice guy and tell you everything in detail. his quiz and exam are easy and you feel nice at the end of his class.
Prof. Branson was great. He explained the material really well and helped out people with problems. The tests were just 6 question worth 10 points each, so if you knew the basics concepts of the material, you would do fine. I would say he is the best math professor I have had so far.
Prof. Branson is a very nice guy. He is always willing to help out.
really good teacher. i never did book work, i just listened to him and took notes and got an A. highly recommened! If you struggle in math hes a great teacher to assist. goes a little fast but will help you stay caught up! :)
Good teacher.
Teaches the material at a brisk pace, but explains things very clearly. Knows his stuff. Grades fairly. One of the best math teachers. Would definitely recommend.
Branson is a great teacher. He never plays favorites, and always grades fairly. He is very intelligent without being condescending. Entertaining too. I highly recommend Branson to anyone.
Dr. Branson is great!! He teaches a a good pace, and explains things completely. He always helps during office hours and also in the tutoring center.
Great teacher. Resonable tests. Interesting to listen too. Didn't ask a lot of really difficult questions on test.
It's kind of a hard class especially if you don't like math at all but he is a helpful teaching and is good at explaining things so you understand them.
One of the best professors in the Math deapartment. His teaching is very clear and expalains the same material in variety of ways so that you can understand. Tests are not hard if you put effort, mostly from homework .
Homework assignments weren't required, but you should still do them. Quiz every class period, easy though. Just show up to class, do the homework and you'll get a B. Take Branson, he doesn't nit pick at stupid minor details like a lot of math teachers. He is a great prof.
Very clear lectures, moves though material fast but eexplains well. Tests are based on homework and very manageable.
Go to class he has 10 point quizes every class. The quizes are questions right from the homework. The homework is not graded or handed in. There are 3 test and the test questions are right from the homework and if you avarage an A on all three test you don't have to take the final and get a A. Do the homework. Great Prof take him.
Best math professor I've had yet! Very willing to help.
He was by far the best professor i have ever had for math. I am usually awful at math and i ended up with an "A" in the class. If you average an A on all of his exams you dont have to take hte final and you get an automatic A in the course! Great Professor!!!
Great Professor, and a nice guy. he put notes on d2l and the solutions to quizes but started to stop doing that about half way through the semester.
Great prof, if you average 90% on first 3 exams he gives you an automatic A. No required homework ever, but tests are based off homework questions and in class quiz questions. Math XL homework due every couple weeks but no more than 5 assignments.
Moves fast but gives you everything you need to do well. Posts all lecture notes online. Homework not required but recommended. I never used the book; did all practicing on MathXL. Average 90% on the three tests and get an automatic A in the course.
He moves fast and you pretty much have to teach yourself all of the work. There are in-class quizzes every Thursday. 3 Tests a semester. Use the math tutors outside of the class and you'll do fine. He also gives you an option for extra credit by going to supplemental instruction. So go to that and they will help you with everything.
He puts all the notes up on D2L, MathXL quizes are due about every week, and in class quizes are every thursday. He takes FOREVER to get your grades back...it made it difficult to decide how much I needed to apply myslef for the next assignments, quizzes, and tests. This ultimately made my grade drop.
Explains things well. If you average 90% + on the 3 in class tests you will get and A and not have to take the final. Try hard for this it makes your life a lot easier
Professor Branson is a very good professor. He is very helpful and is willing to help students as long as they ask questions and are willing to put forth the effort to learn the material. Take him, he is a great professor.
Great teacher. Good at explaining. Takes the time to answer questions and go over things you might have questions about.
HE SUCKS. You have to take 2 quizzes per week, but it's over homework... He grades too hardly and hardly ever shows up on time. Get out of his class.
Worse Prof Ever..Run!! He is hard grader, and he favors some students over others. i liked math before i met him..
Nice guy that really wants to see his students do well. Teaches kind of fast at times n it can get kind of tough to keep up. Overall, good professor n i would recommend taking him.
Lectures in class, daily quiz/survey for attendance points, homework not collected. Easy and helpful, loved this class.
I retook this class after withdrawing. I really liked this class the work load wasn't as intense as before liked the student helpers if math isn't your think try this class with him easy going but doesn't respond to emails
Prof. Branson is very helpful but went through problems so slowly. The class was so easy but you have to stay until the end to take a mandatory 'quiz' for attendance. Textbook is used in class. Test questions are directly from quizzes and book problems. Overall a nice guy, but takes too much time on each problem.
I had taken 193 with a different teacher and failed because she didn't explain anything. So I took it again the next semester with Branson. He was so much better and much more helpful! I actually learned something and the whole class wasn't based off of just 3 or 4 exams! much more helpful to get a good grade!
Does a ton of stuff online, with videos and stuff. Has a "flipped classroom" with lecture online and homework in class. Curves it a ton at the end (at least for me) I learned more math than with any other teacher before hand
Great teacher and very helpful just watch the videos and do the online homework and you'll be fine. He posts the previous years test online as well.
Quizzes every class period, he constantly made mistakes on worksheets and his flipped classroom videos are really long and not edited, one was unwatchable due to sound, takes forever to get tests back, completely forgot to post extra credit quizzes, however class is passable if you watch the videos and him and his TAs are very helpful
It was a flipped classroom with a quiz every other day and constant worksheets. I watched his youtube videos while doing the worksheets and it really helped in understanding the material. If you're good at Math, easy A. If not, the TA's are helpful and so is the tutor.
I really like him. The videos on YouTube were very useful, especially for international students.
Branson lectures for half an hour, gives you a worksheet (that isn't graded) for the next half hour, then a quiz for the last 15 minutes on the previous class material. He is an ok professor, you know what to expect, but nothing special.
This professor really takes time out of his day to help students. My dog died tragically the day of one of the exams, I talked to him and he let me retake it a month later. Make sure you go into his office hours and get help if you need it, he is more than willing to help. This class is very hard, no matter what professor you take it with. STUDY.
Can be a tough class. said at the beginning to do assignments in the book to help you with the daily quizzes, I didn't and I did just fine. DO NOT buy the hardcover book! just get the access code and it will come with etext. only 3 tests all semester and mymathlab, (which can take the score of one test) daily quizzes, never takes attendance.
The course can get difficult at times, you just need to make sure you go to class and listen to the lectures. You have a quiz at the end of every class, and three exams throughout the semester. If your tests average to an A, you don't have to take the final. Don't get the textbook, I never used it. He's overall a very nice man, and willing to help.
He's great. this class is easy. Never got below 910 on the 15ish quizzes. Never got below a 95% on tests. If you average an A on the 3 tests, you don't have to take the final. This class teaches pretty basic stuff you learn in high school. If you can do probability and slopes of lines, you can get an A pretty easily. DON'T BUY $200 TEXTBOOK!!
Goes through one example and then gives you the rest of the time to work on a work sheet with concepts that were not mentioned. Partner quiz every class.
He's the best professor ever. Maybe I got two 8's from all the quizzes, and all 9/10. Never got below 97% on the tests. There is no final if you get 90% on the 3 tests. He is really helpful, he will be always there to help you.
He is a very good professor to take for Math 196, if you have gone past algebra at the high school level. If not, I might recommend someone else, depending on how confident you are in math.
This teacher is the worst to take for math course, he doesn't explain well and he expects you to know most of the stuff, I recommend not to take him, he will make you life miserable. Too many quizzes like every class. If you don't to have a terrible semester take another professor. Takes so long to answer for you email 2.
Branson mumbles a lot and is hard to understand in his lecture-hall sized classes. His grading criteria is clear and he is organized, but his teaching style is terrible and getting enough help from him is like pulling teeth. He tries to make his word problems sound like accounting problems but couldn't do it accurately, making things more confusing
Expect a quiz at the end of class every single time you meet. You absolutely do not need the textbook, however you need the access code. If you study off of mathlab you will do good in the class. Also, the worksheets he hands our are super helpful too. It takes a lot of studying to pass this class.
Math is my worst subject and he didn't really help. He's very disorganized and talks over your head. He's nice and understanding.
He is definitely there for his students and wants them to succeed. However, with a class full of 90 students, it's hard for them to answer questions in class sometimes. Being there everyday is a must as you turn in something for points every class period. It is a challenging class but as long as you study and do worksheets, you should be fine.
He was terrible
I really liked Mr. Branson. In a huge class of 100+ students, he would walk around during the last part of class in which he gave you time to work on assignments and ask every student how they were doing and if they needed help with anything. The class is difficult, very test heavy. If math is not your strong suit you want to attend every class.
Absolutely awful I loved math before this class and now can't stand it, doesn't help with anything, there were numerous occasions where his TAs gave me wrong answers. He was consistently showing up late to class and forgetting things. I would not recommend this professor at all.
Very helpful, put in the work and he'll help you.
One of my favorite professors to date. I had a personal situation in the middle of the semester and it set me back in the class . I met with Professor Branson and he was so understanding and willing to work with me to ensure my grade didnt suffer too much. Hes very caring and wants his students to succeed.
Great professor. Works hard to get the basic idea of the material distilled down into something digestible. Tests are not to hard if you come to the lectures and work on the homework. The book sucks though.
Branson was a great prof. The class was pretty much get what you want out of the class. If math is your strong suit, easy A. Average an A on the three tests, you get an A in the course and are excused from final. Also in class quiz/assignments daily. I didnt do a single piece of homework, averaged an A on the tests, and showed up. Easy as 3.14159
If you are the student that does good on tests but hates homework, this class is perfect for you. Homework is graded but if you get an A average on all your tests, you receive an A in the class regardless of homework. Professor has strict rules, but he knows what he is talking about and is willing to help you.
Professor Branson was really good. He gives homework, but doesn't require you to hand it in. 4 tests make up 80% of the grade with the other 20% being quizzes. Branson makes it hard to fail in his classes, he teaches the material well, gives a really good review worksheet the class before exams, and gives partial credit. Best math prof I've had.
This is the best lecturer that I have ever met in calculation field. I took his online class which make me understand all financial problems, probability and the rest. I would recommend to take his class if you want to understand fully in mathematical field. Take his class, take his class, take his class if you are lucky and get the chance.
Grades fall heavily on 4 test including final and quizzes/homework given in class which are not hard. Its hard to fail his class but easy to fall behind if you try to wing it. Come to class and do suggested problems. He also is very clear when explaining concepts and whys/hows. Im glad to have him because he made things easy for the class.
This is the best professor I've ever had. Everything that is in his lectures are in the tests, so studying is really easy. There's a quiz/assignment every week but they're really easy, and you can usually work with other people in the class. Although the textbook was used, he puts scans of it online so you don't need to buy it.
Extremely strict and will point you out to the entire class even if your just asking a question to a peer. Also an online program teaches you about 90% of the information instead
If you need to take MATH 271 for your program this is the guy to take it with, not Fiala. The lecture packets he provides for each section as you progress through the class are extremely helpful in laying out the material you need to know. He sets very clear expectations about grading, exams, homework etc. I got an A with a weak algebra background.
His lectures felt rushed and unprepared. It doesn't feel like he is giving a lecture, he just thinks out loud as he is solving a problem. Every week, you will have one assignment, quiz, and a group assignment which will be completed in class. The content of this course isn't too hard, just make sure to write notes because it can be easy to forget.
can be confusing but once you get it, you get it. if you get computer logic, this class will be easy for you. Lectures felt a bit rushed and scattered. during week you get 1 in class assignment with a group, lecture notes to fill out, and a hw assignment. not too hard, just different than any math youve seen before
Discrete Math is HARD, but this instructor really makes it tolerable. Weekly assignments and in-class assignments make up most of your grades for the course. The exams were open-book and were highly based on the pre-test assignments. Branson is also easily accessible outside of class for help and wants to help.
The whole class is so disorganized. He makes you watch lectures and turn in notes every week but the notes make no sense. Then you spend the whole class period working on worksheets that he dosen't show you how to do or correct the worksheets. And on the exams you can't even use a calculator. He made the class harder than it needed to be.
I've had an interesting experience with Prof. Branson. For Discrete, he was one of my least favorite teachers. In diff. eq. however, he was one of my favorites. Reverse classroom (lectures at home, homework at school) made it so much easier to understand the content when you have 3 people and the prof. telling you how to correctly do a problem.
Hes a good professor. Keeps things simple. Quiz once a week. Exams are doable. Easy A
Branson was by far the best Calculus professor I've ever had. He was totally invested in what he taught and everything was from his perspective not some generic slide show. Several months later I can confirm I have a far better understanding of differential equations than several of my peers. I credit Branson with laying a solid foundation.
Professor Branson is the best professor I have had at SCSU. He is such a clear communicator and makes complicated phenomena approachable and easy to understand if you put in the effort to learn. He uses time really efficiently, which means you will learn the material, get sufficient practice, but not feel overwhelmed by the work load.
Prof Branson is a good prof. He operates in a reverse classroom so you do the notes and do hw in class. The only problem is if you do pay attention to the notes it can be hard to tell what's going on. The tests he gives you a practice test that will have 5 or so exact questions on the test. practice the prac test and you will at least pass.
Idk why you need to pay to take this class he just talks out loud and writes down what he is thinking, he doesnt actually teach anything. I asked him if he has additional lectures anywhere cause he has them all online but he just said no go to the tutor center. Probably the biggest lame of a professor I have ever had try taking it with anyone else.
He does a flipped classroom so his lecture notes, videos, and homework are done outside of class and you spend class time doing worksheets that don't help with the homework or exams. Not a fan of this teaching style and I think that's why I struggled. He wasn't very helpful with questions in class either, just told us to go to tutoring center.
Very hard to follow along with lectures, doesn't tell you how the final is graded anywhere, and refuses to answer any of my emails. He doesn't seem like a terrible person and genuinely seems very good at math, but that alone doesn't make you a good teacher/professor. Does uses an opensource book, which was good, same with the homework program.
