THIS PROFESSOR IS THE WORST. By far, the worst college professor I have ever had. His class is so ridiculous and he expects so much from you for a 1000 level course. He lets you know 'how in charge' he really is and his tests are awful. Buckle down and study or you will not pass. I got an A but I earned it. Take Frazier, much better than him.
Dr Brooks is really interesting and intelligent. His lectures, and his tangents during lecture always contain interesting information. Yeah, he is strict but it's honestly not that bad. Make sure you write down what he says, because you already have the info on the powerpoints. He's also kind of attractive so there's that.
I had a run-in with this professor that left a bad impression. He is very unforgiving for mitigating circumstances. You will however learn in his class. He is good at what he does, but he needs to understand that if a student runs out of class to puke in the lobby during a test, it is a d*ck move to then fail them for the test! He is what he is!
I took Dr. Brooks for Biodiversity-just a lot of memorization and don't be lazy and Bio Principles-need to read and understand the processes and I did better in Bio Principles. I loved him as a professor! He is super strict so I wouldn't take him for an 8am unless you're a morning person. Attendance and timeliness matter. He is a nice guy too.
Classroom policies are horrendous and more More Strict than a high school course. Attendance is mandatory which is absurd since he spends 1/3 of the lecture taking about irrelevant stuff. The material he teaches in the hour and twenty minute class can be covered in about 30 minutes just reviewing the PowerPoint
Course is not all that difficult, lots of memorization, though. Funny, informative, and attentive. Need help, go to his open office hrs. Attendance is mandatory, I-Clicker quizzes on information not yet covered so read ahead to earn points! Cell phone- get kicked out, if not, up to 50 pts deducted. NO ELECTRONICS. No hats, no glasses if not on,&c.
He is a wonderful teacher if you are a wonderful student. This isn't an easy class and you won't pass if you don't work for it. He treats his students with respect and if you follow all the meticulous, ridiculous albeit, rules you will do more than fine! Don't expect to be a lazy, whiny student and make an A in his class, won't happen.
He is a good professor when it comes to his materials, but he has way too many rules and regulations. His tests are pretty easy if you just get down what he says in class, that means attendance is MANDATORY! He helps you understand the topic though! Just have to take his notes and go through powerpoints.
Took Brooks for Bio principles and biodiversity. Didn't get an A, but that's on my part, kinda slacked a little bit. But he definitely gives you plenty of opportunities to pass. His first exam in both classes are not worth much so if you failed them, chances are you can still pass the class with an A. Can't have any electronics in class though.
Worst professor ive taken at FAU. So bad, i just changed my major so i never have to deal with him again. Currently working my butt off to bring back my GPA. I passed the LAb with flying colors, why couldn't the class be the same.
He runs the class WAY stricter than any class I have ever taken in my life. If you have to use the bathroom, you're not allowed back in. He has people guarding the doors and walking around which is uncomfortable. He often goes on irrelevant tangents. The class is entirely based off of memorization so be prepared to study. Do the extra credit!
Dr. Brooks is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is very fair with test material considering u dont need to read the book at all just pay attention and study the slides.
Too many rules. But gives good feedback. Makes too many not funny jokes. Get ready to read everyday! Never forget your i clicker at home!
Brooks is an ok professor. VERY strict and you better be careful to not get on his bad side but he can be very funny as well. Cracks some jokes and has TAs monitoring the class as if it was a prison. Make sure you go to class for quizzes and to study hard for the exams.
His lectures are pretty fun, he will interact with students and even sounds a little like Robert Downey Jr. BEWARE - his exams are VERY challenging. When he says you need 30-60hrs of study, HE MEANS IT. There is plenty of material, lots of supplementary reading, and he expects a lot from you.
Study and pay attention as much as you can. He will asks questions via I-Clicker so you have to study before hand. Sometimes he will randomly pick on people to answer questions.
He makes the material way harder to learn than it really is. The hardest professor that I have EVER taken. However, if you read and study A LOT, A LOT, A LOT on your own, you should be fine. He has strict rules and classroom monitors as well.
This class was honestly a joke. Ridiculously easy course. I am genuinely astonished by the number of reviewers saying that they struggled in this class. Thats how you know you may not be cut out for a bio major. Great professor, very knowledgeable and funny jokes. Would take again.
Dr. Brooks explains the information well. Getting an A is absolutely possible, but you have to put in the time. Do not take multiple other time-consuming science courses with his class because it does require you to study and review thoroughly. Every point in class counts (iClicker and exams) because he does not curve.
He is a great professor and clearly demonstrates the beauty of biology. Professor Brooks made this class one of the best bio classes I've ever taken.
Dr. Brooks is an amazing professor and I honestly learned so much from Biodiversity and Biological Principles. He can make rude jokes sometimes, but I recommended taking him-especially if you are interested in any health profession.
took him for Biodiversity&Bio Principles. LOVE LOVE LOVE brooks. LAZY, YOUNG-MINDED, IRRESPONSIBLE students BEWARE. He does not make this easy on you. this is college expect to be treated as an adult in his course. But Appreciate this man more then any other professor at FAU. Really preps you not only for his class but for all courses to come.
Witness Greatness. He cares about his students. Lots of material to understand that is why he so strict with his rules. Go to class and study beforehand for his quizzes. Pretty straightforward class. Learned so much but that was because brooks makes you want to learn the material. He is always there to explain any material that is difficult.
Brooks is the professor to be avoided, he won't help students succeed. He guards the classroom like it's jail.
Has a lot of crazy rules, but it's not hard to follow them people! Didn't bother me any! This class is hard, mainly because I took it in the summer which should be avoided if possible. I found him to be very funny and was always excited to go to his lectures. Study study study. Really wants students to succeed and is very passionate about biology.
He is very strict however, the course is not so bad just need to study and review material given from the professor
Dr. Brooks is the man. He keeps his classes engaged and brings a fresh approach to teaching. You must go to every class and take notes if you want to succeed. AND YOU KNOWS THIS.... MAANNNN
DO NOT take brooks. trust me!!! save yourself the headache and take frazier instead! His exams are so freaking hard and your'e gonna regret if you take him. Compare frazier's ratings and his, that should tell you enough.
Professor Brooks is hilarious and really cares about Biology. You WILL learn a lot. His rules may seem "ridiculous", but honestly they are there to help you focus more during lecture. Reading ahead and attendance is a must! An A is possible if you have his lecture notes book and put forth the effort!
Dr. Brooks is an amazing professor, energetic in class, makes you think, and teaches the material well. His exams are difficult, his quizzes are hard but the thing that many people here are forgetting is that, these are designed to make you learn the material. Take good notes, show up to class, STUDY, and you may be pleased with your grade.
He is super cocky and will make fun of students. He takes his job way to seriously when it comes to handing out tests or do iclicker quizzes. If you don't show up to class dont expect to pass. His tests are extremely hard and will talk to the very last minute for lecture
Ever wonder why his lecture halls are so big? It's because his ego can't fit in anything smaller. He could be a good teacher if he didn't care so much about scaring and making fun of students. He makes you buy his lecture notes, how pompous, nice to see his lecture slides robbing us all of our money.
Maybe if he didn't run his classroom like a prison I would be able to like him....
Brooks is a great professor. At first he may seem really scary but you'll get used to him. He makes his classes interesting and I enjoyed coming to class. He's strict but that's understandable. If you try hard and study you can get an A but if you're lazy, do not expect to pass this class. But there is nothing on the test that he didn't cover.
You get out, exactly what you put in. DO NOT MISS A SINGLE CLASS. Although sometimes he makes the material harder to learn than it actually is, it's only to help us as students. An astounding professor. DO not be lazy at all.
I didn't like this class at all , very strict professor , if u had your phone out you would be kicked out of class . no watches or mechanical pencils allowed or erasers , it was just way too much for university level class , like come on this is not high school . however he knows his stuff and does an awesome job at explaining material ,POPQUIZEEEH
I took Dr. Brooks over summer and will be taking him again this spring. THE best bio prof at FAU and one one of one of my favorites ever. Don't be so offended by his classroom rules and pay attention in class. He gives potential potential test questions in class. Must take Dr. Brooks if you are serious about your education.
The class isn't as difficult as everyone wrote. Just make sure you read ahead and study.
Honestly, if you go to every class and take decent notes you will be okay. He offers a exceptional amount of extra credit through the life line class and through diagnostic quizzes. Yes, his personality does take some getting used to, but overall it will make the subject matter bearable. Also, don't be that kid that raises their hand every 5 mins!
Professor Brooks does not ask his students to know anything more than what he talks about in lectures. If you show up to lectures and take notes you will more than likely receive an A in the course. However, if you do not show up you more than likely will not pass as professor Brooks does give many in class quizzes.
Took this class summer 2016, so this was a very fast paced class. Use the study guide book that he made and the quick study charts like a bible. READ AHEAD because all of the quizzes in classes will be unexpected and are directly from the book and charts. This is a lot of information and a bunch of memorization so study hard!
Tests are so hard that you'll want to throw it in the fire. Brooks will disrespect you if you need help. He is smart, but very rude. TAKE FRAZIER INSTEAD, BECAUSE SHE IS SO NICE AND HELPFUL. IF YOU ASK FRAZIER, YOU WILL FEEL SAFE AND HELPED. I failed the class because of his stupid behavior. I absolutely hate him.
I took this class in 1989. It was, and still is, one of the best classes I ever took. I got my M.S. with Dr. Brooks as my major Prof and I am a research biologist and professor- thanks to his mentorship! If you are whining, pick another career. If you are serious about biology, stay put, study hard, and thank your lucky stars!!!
Awful! Disrespectful, constant yelling and extremely long exams. Don't be late, constant pop quizzes. Read ahead.
Brooks treats his class like it is prison. He even made fun of me for having Autism. FAU needs to fire the faculty who disrespect their students (Like William Brooks, David Bjorklund, Geri Mayer, etc). FAU, you need to control the professors' behaviors, so the students can learn and pass the classes, so they can get on with life.
Won't be willing to help you and is very mean to his students. Frazier is willing to help in a calm manner.
If you want to be a doctor or scientist you are going to have to dedicate a lot of time to studying. Science is not like liberal arts! Dr. Brooks is a great science teacher. I love this prof b/c, in hindsight, everything he said was TRUE. Only the most dedicated will succeed in this major. if anyone thinks he's hard reconsider your major.
His lectures make no sense, but you have to go. Keep up with reading material. Too vague at times
Dislike this professor very much. You can't talk, no electronic devices allowed (if your phone goes off, you get 50pts deducted), he makes fun of students, he gets mad when you ask questions, and you can't even leave the room to use the bathroom. His exams are tough but you can get a good grade if you study hard. One tip is to study ahead.
Although he is strict when it comes to phones, quiz taking and the rest, his lectures are very interesting. He is an incredibly funny teacher, and as long as you study what he tells you to study, you should do great on the exams.
I think this class is a good testament to what being a bio major is all about. its not easy, and he is not a pushover like most teachers. Brooks was the greatest prof ive had at FAU and I am about to graduate. He is engaging and very passionate about what he is teaching. If u want a career in medicine you need to learn to thrive from these classes
Everything on the tests are in his lecture notebook. He'll tell you to star things that are on the test. Read/look ahead for clicker quizzes. Third and fourth exams are the hardest. Goes off on a lot of tangents and makes some students uncomfortable. Rubs some students the wrong way. Great at explaining concepts. Study hard to get an A.
Brooks was constantly rude when people answered questions wrong in the 8am class I attended. He blames his unpleasant (and sometimes borderline abusive) demeanor on him not being a "morning person". It made me uncomfortable in class when he was rude to others, i'd suggest another prof for this course.
He likes to hype you up and make you think everything will be extremely difficult. Go to tutoring and study and you should be fine. DON'T MISS CLASS. You actually learn everything you need to know in lectures. Just pay attention and try to understand and ask questions. Lifeline helps a lot and so does lab because it is good review.
Brooks is an intellectual professor that utilizes teaching techniques that are college level in addition to comedic acts to entertain his students during his long lectures. He "pokes fun" at students similarly to a high school teacher; students who are sensitive might dislike it. I would take Frazier for a more serious and more extra credit course.
Very brash, little patience. Uses analogies and introduces them without context. Requires purchase of quick study guides that he's written, plus an overpriced course notes book (PPTs online contain same info). Don't need to read textbook to pass, but recommended to understand material. Nice guy behind tough exterior, come to class, don't be late.
He is a tough grader and his tests are a little difficult so make sure you attend class everyday. I passed both of his classes and never bought the text book, all you need is the study guides and power point notes. Study ahead for the popup quizzes he gives like 6 of them and uses those questions on the exams so try to write them down if u remember
ATTEND CLASS. Tests are tough. You must understand the concepts in order to pass. I-clicker required. Never used textbook. Quick Study Guides are NEEDED. Makes you read ahead by yourself and then quizzes you on it for a grade. Offers extra credit, but it's very little. Wouldn't rec. taking with another science class. Worked very hard for my grade.
Not the nicest but really good professor! Highly recommend. Great lecturer and it is clear he has been teaching a long time. Exams not hard but DETAILED . However, the exams come straight from lecture so what he teaches, unlike a lot of professors, is necessary for the exam
I didn't enjoy Brooks' attitude, or the way he treated students. I found him condescending and disrespectful. Don't miss a class, don't even be late, you'll be sorry. The powerpoints and the study guides are essential. You'll need to study the whole powerpoint before classes, since the pop quizzes cover future material. Avoid, if possible.
People seem to over exaggerate when talking about Brooks. Yes he is very crude and obnoxious, but his class shouldn't be taken any different from any other class you're taking. If you go to class and study before and after lectures, getting an A should be a breeze. He is more than qualified in the material and he makes lectures interesting.
This is a challenging class. If you don't put effort in and study you wont pass. Memorize every word that is in the workbook
Brooks is a great professor in terms of teaching, however, his personality is very hard to get used to. He's very demeaning & sometimes rude. Don't be late (not even a minute), don't skip class, & pay attention. I got an A without buying any of the books, only thing I bought were the quickstudy guides. Look up quizlets, it helps a lot.
Studyguide books he makes you buy, don't match the questions on the exams. He's constantly yells at students and makes it easy to fail.
His "quickstudyguide" pages he makes you buy (because he wrote them) you can find online. So I suggest not buying them. Warning, this man treats college students as if they were still in high school. He spends half the class time making fun of them.
DO NOT buy his "biodiversity lecture workbook" It is a word for word copy of his powerpoint slides that he posts on canvas. He wrote the "workbook" and is trying to make money and take advantage of students
Good teacher and everything but there are a lot of pop quizzes so you have to read the texts before lecture and his tests can be very hard at times.
People tend to over do it a bit when it comes to his attitude. You have to go to class to pass and you absolutely CAN NOT be late. if you are late you will not be allowed in. If you don't follow his rules he will point it out. He is a very good professor and gives a lot of detail I loved his class. you have to have a sense of humor to take him
Do not buy the workbook. This class is an easy A. Students who don't pass are the ones who study the night before. If you can't get an A in this course, you are not ready for upper level science courses. also DO NOT BE LATE. NOT EVEN A SECOND (LITERALLY).
I took Brooks for BSC1010 as well, same textbook that I never opened. Read the ppts! take notes on what he lectures! Go to classes and study for iclicker quizzes, they are pop quizzes & not scheduled. Exams often have a few freebies but they are very long, study well!
Dr. Brooks is an amazing teacher. I had him for Biodiversity and I learn so much and his lectures were never boring. He actually teaches, yet you have to put on your part to do well in class.
Personally loved this class, he's low key funny so it's not that boring. He tells you exactly whats on the test if you go to class. Don't buy or read the textbook buy his little brown book instead. Study his powerpoints and that book and the stuff he says in class and it's not that hard. If you don't pay attention in class might call you.
The GOAT
Brooks has been my favorite professor at FAU so far. I am a Biology major so this class is important to me but he made the class enjoyable even though the tests were rough. Just need to study well and you'll do fine.
This is one of the best professors I have had at this school. His lectures are very straight forward and if you take good notes and study there is no reason you shouldn't pass. It is also an added bonus that he is extremely funny and really engages the class. His exams are fair and a lot of times he will hint at questions he will ask during lecture
One of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are so entertaining that even when mind-numbingly topics like botany present themselves, he manages to grasp your attention. I recommend him to anyone that wants to have an incredibly clear understanding of biology, while laughing the entire time.
This legend was the highlight of my first semester. He's loud, funny, and likes to pick on his students out of mutual fun. He literally says what's going to be on the tests. This class was extremely easy, just occasionally review; I crammed the exams and still got A's on all of them. Dr. Frazier is just too boring, just avoid her.
A little rude but if you show up to class you'll be fine ohhhh just don't be late.
Seems intimidating at first, but just jokes around a lot. He tries his best to make boring topics interesting so you don't fall asleep. Read ahead before class because he likes giving pop quizzes, and a lot of the time the same questions come back on exams.
He's super intimidating at first and then you see he really tries to make the entire lecture time engaging. Don't be late, don't talk during his lecture, and TURN OFF ELECTRONICS (for real). Tests are fair, lots of pop quizzes so make sure you read topics ahead of time or you'll regret it, and he offers many extra credit opportunities.
If you don't want to study and I mean really study for the tests do not take him, you will NOT pass. He's funny and makes lectures atleast interesting but he is very strict and class is mandatory. (you'll want to go anyways, not a class you learn on your own) You will need iclicker for random quizes, that you'll need to prestudy for. Solid choice.
Professor Brooks is a character. I had him for both Bio-principals and Biodiversity. Attend every lecture, read the lecture notebook before class and you'll do fine. His exams aren't too difficult, and in my opinion were pretty direct. His lectures are enjoyable but beware he's very strict: no phones, no laptops, no technology whatsoever.
Very funny during lectures, keeps you engaged for the most part and makes everything easy to understand. Took him for both Bio Principles and Bio DIversity, and glad I did. GO TO THE LECTURES! Everything he says during lecture is fair game for the exams, which are a bit difficult, but if you pay attention and do what he asks you'll have no problem.
Brooks is not a good professor. He lectures very heavy and if you don't pay attention you won't pass. Tends to make fun of students and can be funny at times but other times he takes his jokes too far to the point where he is very disrespectful. He will not change the way he teaches the course so don't bother taking him for biodiversity
I had Dr. Brooks for BSC 1010 and 1011. He is very knowledgeable in what he teaches. On the exams, his word choices are very tricky. So when you're studying for the exams, make sure you are very certain in what you're studying otherwise the wording could potentially trick you. He gives unannounced quizzes so study before each lecture.
Go to class, random quizzes for attendances. class is grades by points. No phones. Follow his rules and you will be fine. DONT buy the textbook. His notes are online. test are the notes. He uses clickers. He sends emails thing that you need to read (print them out/fill them out/take to class, they might be for extra credit)
His lectures will either bore you out of your mind or have you laughing every 5 minutes. He's quite entertaining and really funny during lectures, however very strict. He has a very strict policy about cell phones or any electronics for that matter, and I suggest not even thinking twice about using it during lectures.
In my opinion, this class was not difficult at all as long as you actually studied and prepared well for his iClicker quizzes. His test questions are very direct and fair. You don't need to buy his textbook, just his lecture book so that you can write notes in it. Yes he does have strict rules, but he's very funny and makes lectures entertaining.
Brooks is an amazing professor who truly cares about the stuff he is lecturing on and finds different ways to help you remember tough concepts. People are going to say that he was horrible and they failed because he is a horrible professor but the truth is Brooks makes you work for your grade. You have to put the time and effort in to pass.
This class is all about memorization that is literally it. Study before the lecture at least like 3-5 pages and a few slides on the power point, look up words you don't understand and write them down in your workbook and you should be fine. Take Lecture and Discussion seriously and you shouldn't have any issues.
You can get a possible 60 pts from Discussion(Lifeline) that goes towards your overall lecture grade with 12 points extra credit possible in Lifeline. Lifeline is so important and can keep you from getting a letter grade higher. Go to Lifeline, do the work, talk to your professor and TA. This class is really easy if you do the work and study.
Brooks in class rude and unapproachable but if you go to his office hours he is really sweet just does not have time to waste on stupid questions that can be answered with the syllabus. I took him for both Diversity and Principles, and I would take him again for another class. He is very straightforward on what will be on the exams.
He words test questions to intentionally trick you. He's can be really rude in lecture and he is obnoxious and annoying. Do not buy the textbook, but you MUST go to class. He's definitely not approachable. You should take Brooks for biodiversity and Fraiser for Principles.
OMG Brooks is a nightmare. He made me buy the books that aren't that useful. I studied from the book and powerpoints, and failed every exam except the final, and dropped the course. I went to his office hours, not easy to get along with. Do not register for his class!
I had Dr. Brooks for Bio 1 and 2. I really enjoyed his classes. His lectures are great (since they're mandatory it helps), there are a lot of rules for test/quizzes but for non-cheaters no biggie. He has high expectations so make sure to read before each class since he does give quizzes on material not yet covered in class.
I took Brooks for both Biodiversity and Bio Principles. So far he is my favorite professor. He is very funny during lecture and he makes you want to study. I think he cares about his students a lot. Thats why there are so many rules in his class. But if you show up, study before the lecture, study his notes, you will be good.
Dr. Brooks is an amazing teacher. I took both Biodiversity and Bio Principles with him and I learned so much. His lectures are amazing and he engages the class so you are not bored. Attendance is mandatory! His tests are on his lectures and additional information from his quick study guides and the book. Great Professor!
Brooks is great, I had him for both Principals and Diversity. Although I greatly preferred Principals he made both classes very enjoyable. His exam and quiz procedures are a little ridiculous but I get why he does it. I'm now in my second degree at FAU and trust me when I say that Brooks is one of the best Professors I've had at FAU.
He's in my top 5 of favorite professors at FAU (believe me, there's not many to choose from). HE MEANS BUSINESS!! This is not an easy A class. You will put your blood, sweat, and tears into your work. His lectures are enjoyable, he gives you exactly what will be on the quiz/exam. DO NOT miss class, your grade heavily depends on your attendance.
Dr. Brooks made me super angry. Didn't help me understand the material when I asked. He doesn't provide helpful guidance, so I had to teach myself and go to tutoring everyday in the semester. I almost failed, but luckily passed with a C. Brooks is smart but very condescending and rude, avoid if possible.
You have to attend every class. Every class has a quiz. You must read ahead to the next lecture for the quiz. Questions can be confusing but he goes over them at the end. Must read ahead. If you dont study drop the class. Not an easy A.
This class is not an easy A class. If you don't study every day, this class will be extremely hard for you. Even though attendance isn't a grade, you can expect a quiz, or quizzes, every session. I took his class in the summer and if you don't read ahead of his lectures, you won't do well on his quizzes. But his lectures are very interesting.
In the beginning I would've said this class was dreadful, but he's hard on you for a reason. He actually wants you to stop being on your butt n learn what you pay for. Only take this class if you plan on being focused. No phones allowed, pop up quizzes, but a lot of laughs. Just study literally+I suggest getting to know him personally, sweet guy.
I thought he was a pain in the ass b/c I didn't want to study. but if you are there to study and pay attention and do your work you should pass with an A. He's hilarious but very strict and he has his reasons, no phones at all or u will be kicked out but it helps because you pay attention to the lecture. READ READ READ AHEAD, Extra credit is given
He is a great guy, really funny too. The course doesn't really have any homework and for that reason the exams matter a ton! Do well on the exams and you'll do well in the class. Just study study study and it should be an easy A. He has little summaries of specific things formatted into little laminated sheets that he made himself. READ THOSE!
One of the funniest professors I've had. I took him for bio principles and biodiversity. He is kind of hard but everything on the exams is straight out of his lectures. Really good at teaching
Hands down the best professor I have had! Hilarious! Awesome lectures!! He makes you work for your grade and studying is a must. If you don't pass it is simply because you don't study. He is awesome! I wish I could take more classes with him!! Don't take him if you are sensitive.
Brooks is a good professor but he doesn't make it easy to get an A without studying. His lecture book will be your best friend that semester. Pay attention to what he says in class because he gives you test questions throughout the lecture. It takes work but its definitely doable. Overall it was a good class, 98% of the class was memorization.
You must be DILIGENT studying/memorizing HEAVILY nearly every night. Tests include anything in the lecture book, including tiny captions in diagrams. Must MEMORIZE EVERYTHING. I went to his class with a respiratory infection+fever in fear of missing a pop quiz, then skipped my other classes. Literally a NIGHTMARE. Quizes include brand new material
If you're reading this, you have no idea how furious I am right now. Brooks is so disrespectful, he will not help clear up any confusions students may have, and he grades harshly. I may drop his course and retake this class with Frazier. I had a fight with him today, because of how he treats his students. Don't ever let Brooks be your professor!!!!
So in class, he talks off topic too much and its hard to focus.
He is tough. I can see why people dont like him. If you want someone harsh and makes sure youre on task, take him. You can keep up if youre a student who likes to learn outside of class such as studying and reading ahead. Passed with a B but I knew a ton of people who dropped out.
Easily the most work I've ever had for a 1000 level course. Study hard and memorize everything. Use Quizlet specific to Brooks and his course ("FAU BSC 1010 Brooks"). While he's entertaining and the lectures aren't horribly difficult to listen to, pay attention to details. Write down what he tells you to because they're usually test questions.
Hardest class I've taken so far, ruined GPA. There can be a pop quiz at any time in his class. You have to read and memorize ahead. He screams into the mic and gets off topic all the time. There are just so many things to say but it's too much. Mindset became "I just need to pass". I had a meltdown over this class. Also, NEVER TAKE IN SUMMER!
He is one of the best teachers at FAU. Truly passionate about his work and takes time to cover materials thoroughly. Read before class if you want to pass the daily quizzes. Show up on time or you WILL be locked out.
In my last semester of my last year in college, I can safely say that this is by far the worst teacher ive ever had the displeasure of meeting in 16 years of schooling. DO NOT take his classes if you value your time or effort. Arbitrary answers to ridiculous test questions not covered in class, pop quizzes worth 50% of your grade. AVOID HIM.
Brooks is an incredibly entertaining lecturer, whose value is impaired by his proclivities towards making his students paranoid. Only purchase his lecture book and quick study guides. The textbook is more or less useless in 1010 and 1011. You will have to teach yourself everything before the first class of each unit to ensure a good grade.
Very absurd professor in the way that he conducts his lectures. He goes over the topics but not very in depth, and if you just rely on them hope that divine intervention helps you during tests. Recommended that you self study or get tutoring.
I recommend paying extreme attention to what he emphasizes in his lectures. Do not take exams or pop quizzes lightly! Lifeline is extremely helpful. He makes lectures really interesting and funny so DO NOT SKIP CLASS! If you miss a class you will fall extremely behind. He is strict! you need an iclicker. He is preparing us to be science majors!
I actually liked Professor Brooks. I had him for Bio Principles and Biodiversity. He is a bit intense when it comes to his pop quizzes and tests, but he just wants to make sure students earn their grades. If you stay on top of the reading and put in the work, you shouldn't have any problems passing.
Do not take Brooks. He does not explain things very well and he gets off topic a lot. You do not need the textbook but you do need his lecture note book.
Brooks is actually a really good professor. He is tough and strict but it keeps you on top of your grade. You get kicked out if you are on your phone or watch so be careful. If you pay attention and go to class you will be okay but there are a lot of pop quizzes. Don't sit in the back if you don't want to get called on.
Honestly Im not sure why he has poor ratings. Brooks is an amazing professor that makes lecture alive and fun. No phones/ laptops but it is for a reason for you to actually learn. Had him for both Biological Principles and Biodiversity. You should definitely go to lecture because he has pop quizzes. Study for this class !! Hard work pays off !!
Took Brooks for both Bio principles and Biodiversity and I gotta say he was one of the best teachers I've had at FAU. His class isn't an "easy A'' but if you go to class and study it's definitely possible (I got A's in both). Pop quizzes often and he expects you to pre-study the material. Get used to it. Upper-division courses are much harder.
This is my second time taking Dr. Brooks' class. I have taken 8 am both times and as awful as it sounds, Dr. Brooks manages to wake everyone up with his amazing lectures. He is really funny and a little bit crazy. He is pretty strict on the rules for tests and quizzes but if you can manage to follow them and read ahead, the class is smooth sailing.
Ive taken Brooks for both Bio prin. and currently Bio diver. & to say the least, both of these classes ruined my GPA. Hes a funny guy and makes lectures entertaining, but his test questions are ridiculous. He also only briefly goes over the workbook/slides, the rest you have to look up on your own. He makes it harder than it should be.
Dr. Brooks has interesting lectures and a good sense of humor. His classroom policies are very strict, but that is nothing different from the Life Sciences department in general. He is definitely not an easy A and a lot of studying is required. Even missing class once can have a huge downward spiral effect.
Doesn't teach much. Expects you to know the material before coming to class and goes off topic during his lectures and doesn't talk much about the material. In class he summarize from his lecture notes but there are many iclicker quizzes so you also can't skip. I also had his 8AM class and he yelled a lot for no reason. Too early. Too loud.
Dr. Brooks is a very disrespectful professor towards the students. In the middle of every lecture, he insulted individual students in front of everyone else. This is not the way any educator should behave in a professional career or even at home. I do not recommend any student to take him for this class and Biodiversity.
This is the professor your high school teacher warned you about lol. A cool guy but definitely loud for an 8 AM class. He makes you work for your grade, so study to the max, or just 30 mins a day. At first, I hated the fact that there were TAs in the class watching your every move, but his intentions were to have your attention and it worked
Brooks is a solid professor and really knows what he is talking about. Also, his lectures are not boring at all. Keep in mind, he is very strict and every quiz is a pop quiz. However, you will learn a lot and he offers a lot of extra credit! Good luck!
This is the second time I have taken Brooks and he has amazed me. He has such a positive attitude and has shown that he cares about teaching. I had him for 8 am last semester and decided to take him for 4 pm ... it was the best choice I made! He made lectures more interesting and everything was straight to the point.
If you dislike Brooks, you didnt study & are blaming your poor scores on the professor. Yes the rules are annoying but grow up, youre here at college to learn & use these skills for a future graduate program. He would say test questions in class with the answers so record lectures. Buy all the materials he requires but you don't need the text book.
I would recommend taking anyone, but brooks if you care about your own mental health. Bio is not a hard class, but Brooks makes it seem impossible. No extra credit whatsoever!! Quizzes are so difficult to be prepared for. Also the jokes and comments he makes are scary. He does not motivate you and will make you feel like a failure. Take Keating :)
BEWARE! If youre considering taking this class during COVID-19, I wouldnt recommend. He uses lockdown browser, barely gives extra credit, and doesnt budge to help students at all. Its like he sets us up to fail. I would recommend taking it full term and not half a term, like summer. It was very frustrating with no guidance whatsoever. CAREFUL!!
Due to cornavirus everything was online but he really sucked as a professor. One his lectures are long and boring especially because he has a monotone voice. Secondly he uses lockdown browser for tests but hes VERY anal about your hands during the test. You have to have them up at all times. Also he gives pop quizzes.
Literally one of the worst professors Ive ever taken and Im a junior in college. He gives long boring lecture and for quizzes expects you to study 40-50+ hours. He is unfair, wont answer your questions and just expects you to do well.
He is proud to fail you. Fills his exams and quizzes with trick questions, goes on long irrelevant tangents during lectures and criticizes students for asking questions. Do not take any of his classes unless it is your last option or just wait to take the class with a professor that cares the following semester. Don't waste your money on his class!
This man is giving us pop quizzes ONLINE, during a PANDEMIC. If that doesn't say enough I don't know what does. Only allots 10 minutes to take quizzes, can't go back on answers, and 20 minutes for exams. Monitored screen, and he deducts pts if you look in any direction other than the screen or don't keep both hands in screen at all times. real bad
Do NOT take this class online. This is a warning. I am warning you all. Don't do it. This is not a hard class but Mr. Brooks makes it seem like rocket science and he is not considerate at all. Don't do it to yourselves.
Taking this class online is a mistake. Please just avoid this class online. If there are any problems with the software, just assume you got an F for the assignment because he does not care about technical difficulties. He doesn't even check emails if you send him any. As a lecturer he is pretty okay, but we are not allowed to ask questions.
First day he starts off by saying how hard his class is and how most people fail, and he brags how it gets harder. In my experience any professor that starts of with that is a crap professor. The material isn't hard when you teach yourself but from him it's terrible. If you don't understand he says its on you. Almost everyone fails his exams also.
Hey everyone. Senior here about to graduate, two years later to rate this guy I took as a freshman to say I only got 2 Bs in my whole time at FAU and they were both in his class. The subject is really not that hard, but he makes it ridiculously difficult for no reason. I've never had another prof act the way he does. Absolutely ridiculous
The most inconsiderate professor you will ever have!!!! His testing regulations are way too strict and unreasonable. He doesnt listen to anyone and gets mad when you ask him questions!! Never taking him again.
Probably the worst Teacher Ive ever had. Simply doesnt care about any of his students, and does not care if anyone passes his class. He is very disrespectful and very sarcastic and obnoxious. He started off the year saying proudly how most people dont pass his class. Ive made a very crucial mistake taking his class. He is a TERRIBLE.
Having brooks online is a nightmare. Random pop quizzes can happen any lecture at anytime. He will not review any test or quizzes so you will never know what you got wrong. No going back and he always asks trick questions. He wont let anyone ask question during lecture. Be ready to rewatch his lectures a lot if you want to pass.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. he doesnt care about you at all gives pop quizzes during a pandemic that are lockdown, no going back, and you have to keep hands in screen without looking away at any moment. MakeS material way harder than it should be and is flat out rude when student have questions. Trick questions and must be 5-7 page ahead of lecture.
Don't do online. He's made effort to adjust his lecture style for online. He believes that the use of pop quizzes is fair for *virtual* lecture. Expect to randomly clear your space and kick out roomates for the quizzes. This is due to the use of Lockdown. There's no leniency for covid. Your grade will suffer if life gets tough right now, no help.
This guy is RIDICULOUS. Every single day you are studying just to fail. His questions are worded so hard that even if youre confident on the material, it is extremely hard to pass the pop quizzes and exams. He wont answer your questions,he doesnt care if you fail, and hes extremely difficult for no reason. I had to WD for the first time.
Don't waste your time, he expects you to put all your attention to his class only. Lectures aren't mandatory but he does surprise quizzes to make sure you're there. The quizzes are worded terribly and usually no one passes them. Tests are on lockdown and use of webcam. Chat is closed during lecture so you can't even ask questions if lost.
Rude. Does not answer emails. No chat box during lectures for any possible questions. Takes forever to grade any quizzes/exams. Did not give us our exam grade so we could decide if we should just drop out or if we failed. Pop quizzes.
You have to work very hard for your grade but don't let other people discourage you from taking him. You can rewatch his recorded lectures and take note of everything he says. He does pop quizzes so make sure to review before class. If you have to take his class, just be prepared to work hard.
You cant ask any questions or youll be yelled at in front of the whole class. He gives so many deductions on exams but never tells you why. The lockdown browser rules are ridiculous. You have to keep your hands on your face the whole time. Im a straight A student and this class is literally impossible to pass. DO NOT ENROLL IN HIS CLASS!
This professor knows his stuff and is very intelligent in this subject, ALTHOUGH he expects his students to be the same. His tests have no correlation to what is taught and the questions are insanely specific , he gives random quizzes and doesnt tell you before so get ready for anxiety , this class is the definition of stress .
Be prepared to study everyday, regardless of your work schedule. Atleast 40-60 hours/week. He will popquiz you on material before class beofre he has even taught it. Will never take again. I love animals/plants and am science savvy but this class ruined me. He also doesn't allow quiestions during class because he has "700" students. Good luck.
had no compassion for students during covid. literally does not care about his students at all. doesnt even let us ask questions during the lectures and will give ONLY pop quizzes with weird wording. everything is webcam and lockdown browser which leads to more technical difficulties. even if you study hours for his exams the way he words is horrid
Doesnt allow you to ask questions, will deduct points from your exams and never tell you why, and after each exam, he spends about 30min telling us we all didnt try hard enough. I have always been an A student but he makes it impossible to pass.
You have to put in the time and effort in order to do well in his class. I wouldn't say he's a hard professor because he's pretty straightforward with you. His exams and pop quizzes are based off his lectures, so I recommend attending them. Overall if you study, you'll do fine.
The rudest professor you'll ever have. He couldn't care less about his students and it's like he loves to watch his students get tortured and fail. You have no chance to ask any questions or you'll get yelled at. No consideration of students' conditions during covid time. Overall, very disrespectful and inconsiderate!
If you like a class where it is up to you to be responsible for your grade, then take this class. It was up to me to watch his lecture multiple times, to take in depth notes, and study. Now, I feel like some people over exaggerate the difficulty in this class. I would study a week before exams and do fine, it is just a matter of how well you study.
I was a little skeptical in taking his class because of the reviews. Since this semester we had to online , this man was so anal about absolutely EVERYTHING . It was very disturbing at first, but once you understood what he wanted from you the class was too bad. Definitely need to study almost everyday for his class.
Great professor but expect a lot of pop quizzes(be ready for one every day). Doesn't use the textbook instead using his lecture notes booklet and quick study guides that he made just for the course. If you read ahead and take notes like he says to it is really helpful. If you listen to the lectures, he highlights a lot of what ends up on a test.
Everyone over exaggerates the difficulty of this class. Everything on his exams and quizzes come word for word from what he states in his lectures and lecture notebook. You cant be lazy and need to study hard for this, but its easy if you truly pay attention to everything he says. He is overall pretty funny and the class isnt too bad if you try.
Honestly I would never take this professor ever again. He used his own specific grading which no one in the group chat could understand. We were completely not allowed to ask questions in the zoom. Ive taken a hard Bio class before. This is different, the way he words things is difficult and hard to transfer though the notes and textbooks.
One of the worst class experiences Ive ever had. If you have technical difficulties you automatically fail that assignment or quiz. Everything is timed like were doing the SAT. I dont understand why this guy is so strict about every little thing. Oh and good luck trying to contact this guy Ive tried emailing him and calling like 20 times. SMH.
Worst professor ever! Don't listen to ANYONE who says otherwise. Extremely rude & doesn't care about students. Unrealistically high expectations & course work. Expects students to already know info before class & have his level of knowledge. Lectures are a mess and you can't ask questions. Only answers emails during office hrs & has no compassion
DON'T believe that this class will be easy in any way. Verbatim from his lectures, Brooks says to dedicate 40 hours to this class and treat it like a full-time job. The Cisco meetings he mutes everybody and no one is allowed to ask any questions during the lecture. Also there is very little homework so you're graded entirely on exams.
Professor brooks is very condescending especially in the lectures. He lectures a lot and rambles, mostly repeating the same stuff. There is not a lot of work so the quizzes and exams are worth a lot, and are based on the lectures. Forgo deep learning and just focus on what he says. Overall I didn't learn much and didn't like him and his teaching.
Literally the worst professor I've ever had. he told us how hard the class was and how many people fail the FIRST DAY OF CLASS to make us all scared and not confident about passing anymore. Tests are extremely hard unless you study every single day for hours. Not accessible at all and he won't let you ask questions during class.
I chose Brooks bc of his good reviews and I regret it 100%. His teaching is very bad, does not communicate the information effectively, is VERY disrespectful with students, and does not answer questions. He put info that he did not teach on quizzes and expects you to know ahead and if you don't understand he will blame you for not being good
Just don't do that to yourself. Your mental health is more important. This class is a terrible psychological pressure coming from a professor that does not respect you, care about you, or value who you are. Brooks says that his class is difficult but the material, in fact, is not (memorization), therefore he doesn't communicate info effectively.
Brooks class isnt the toughest, its just tricky. There is barely any homework, so your grade depends on the quizzes and exams. The tricky part is they are based on the lectures, but all he does is repeat himself and act very condescending. Dont take this class unless you have to. The class should be fine but the professor is bad.
I took this class during my first semester of college and ultimately regretted it. I took this when classes were fully in person, and the pop quizzes were horrible. I cried after two weeks of the class and feared I was gonna fail. This class made my freshman gpa horrible, and I will forever regret taking him. I suggest taking a diff professor.
One of the worst professors I have had. Does not let students ask questions. You will NOT pass if you do not watch the lectures or study your notes.
Ive never been so frustrated taking a class. I am an all As and a few Bs student. This professor has no compassion for his students. All he cares about is the paycheck he is receiving. Ive never been so disappointed and disgusted by the way this professor conducts his class.
Good luck if you get stuck with brooks bc this course material is not easy at all and he just makes it harder. His zoom lectures were boring as heck and he spends half the time talking about the syllabus. Very test-heavy grading and the test q's more often than not aren't what the lecture focuses on. Don't need txtbook, yes to Brooks lecture guide
Im a biological science major and I really enjoyed taking Brooks for biodiversity and biological principles. He makes you work for your grade, and if your a not a bio major this will be very time consuming and hard. As a bio major, brooks teaches you what it takes to study and genuinely learn the material you need to. Go to class! Its important!!
You want to WORK to get the grade you want. I've taken Brooks for both Biodiversity & Biological Principles, and he's straightforward with how you should study as well as what you should know for the exam. I HIGHLY recommend studying ahead and attending his lectures!
Brooks is not terrible, but you must make sure you are doing the work and putting in lots of hours to study. The questions on the assignments are nothing of a surprise, but you must know the content well. He is very strict, sometimes uses humor. Uses lockdown on every assignment and you must have reasonable cause in order to make up.
I'm in medical school now and I can honestly say that if you don't pass bio with brooks then it will be hard to get into med school or do well in med school. If you don't like Dr. Brooks it's because of your studying methods! Not everything will be given directly to you; you need to learn a lot info on your own. This is what we do in med school
Professor Brooks is by far one of the best professors I have had. I took his biodiversity class as well and he is straight forward with the amount of time you have to put in. 5-7 pages ahead is standard and if you put the effort in, it isn't bad. Listen to him and take notes and you should be fine. It is a hard course but he made it much easier.
During his lectures he doesn't allow us to use the mic to ask a question like he literally turned off the feature so that we wouldn't be able to speak during his lectures. we have to do the honorlock protocol and that takes time away from our test time. We brought it to his attention and he said "I will not give more time." Horrible professor
Beyond the worst professor I have ever met in my college career!!! He insulted and made fun of me and other students every lecture!! If you are reading this Professor Brooks, disrespecting other people will get you nowhere in life! You should reconsider your behavior and act respectfully because you are teaching college students, not high school!!!
He shouldn't be a prof. I have never in my life seen a professor act with such a disregard for the success of the students. You have 7 minutes to complete the lockdown security checks and answer 10 questions for the quiz, its unrealistic to say the least. His class quiz averages were a 50%... He doesn't allow questions. Its sad AVOID AT ALL COST!!
He's the only professor at FAU to have 200 students that their exam class average is an F and have a semester SPOT review where over 90% of the class rated his teaching as Poor (1/5). You can't ask questions there's only a select few amount of quizzes and exams. Everything is timed and short. All he talks about is himself and the syllabus. BEWARE
If you have anxiety this professor will be the reason you have to schedule and extra session with your therapist during the semester. His class is extremely difficult but this class would be with any professor. DO NOT TAKE IN A SIX WEEK SUMMER SESSION, MAKE FLASH CARDS, GET A TUTOR, CRY. In lecture he will tell you questions that will be on exams.
He is the hardest professor I have ever taken. At the beginning of the semester he says he wishes he had more time to teach this course, but spends about 30-60min scolding students for their low grades and rereading the syllabus each lecture. This class is unnecessarily hard, and he makes it even harder. Get ready to work very hard for your grade.
Absolutely worst teacher I have ever had. Students that made kahoots, quizlets&study sessions still failed. Many know the material, the questions on exam/quizzes are always worded strange and since everything is online, hard to complete all the questions without rushing due to timing. Most averages were around 60s or less everytime&Blames students
I took Brooks for a couple of days, but I could not put with him. In the first day of class, he talked about how many of his students failed. Then he expected everyone to teach themselves before his lecture dates. I would not recommend him at all, and I am glad I dropped his course.
One of the worst professors I have every had, with a CONSISTENT class average of a D on ALL quizzes and exams, if a class is consistently getting below a C average the professor is the problem, not the students. Also will not reveal any of your answers, therefore you never know what you actually got wrong. Q's are subjective rather than objective.
Unhelpful and does not allow for grade growth. The grade is based on tests and quizzes only and he spends the first 30 minutes of class telling everyone they are going to fail. Unhelpful and unsupportive.
I had to hired a tutor to teach me BioPrinciples. Brooks doesn't know how to teach and spend too much time on the syllabus.. He will talk about how so many students has failed his class.. Don't take this in the summer, too much information in a short period of time.
His teaching style wasn't great.. It felt like a self taught class, which was not great if you have never taken biology
Absolutely horrible professor. Please wait until another professor is available. Avoid wasting your time, money, and mental health by not taking Brooks. No curving of grades. No sympathy.
horrible! He so rude, he refused to let people use technology for note taking even when students have learning disabilities like my friend. dont take his class and tbh drop out of FAU all the teachers suck like him :)
You will just be accused of cheating, and failing. Don't ever sign up. I was accused of cheating, and failed. Have to retake this course with another professor.
I took Dr. Brooks in the Spring Semester online, and what I can say is that if you put in the effort and study continuously throughout the semester, you can certainly obtain an A. Study the Quick Study guides, watch the supplementary videos, take notes, and read all of the announcements. Also take the extra credit review quiz for each unit.
Dr. Brooks is one of the best professors I have ever taken. However, his class can be hard for some. He provides a lecture book to study off of. Most of what matters for his class will be done outside of class, he just gives lectures during class time. He gives lots of opportunities for EC, and he is caring. Please take him, no regrets.
Brooks is incredible. His lectures are energetic. He responds to your emails with the upmost of care. He gives you easy quizzes to offset his wonderfully-worded exams. He spends half the lecture telling you that you'll pass the class. His words of encouragement will leave you sobbing tears of happiness. Nah, I'm just kidding. Don't take Brooks.
you need to study/memorize a lot but he does a good job, using humor, to engrain it into our minds. Attendance is key to take away some important points that might be on the test. Plenty of extra credit, as long as you study.
Read before taking Brooks: He does not allow any use of electronics during lectures, but it forces you to pay attention or be bored out of your mind for 80 minutes. You HAVE to put in time in order to pass and you HAVE to attend lectures. If you want to pass, it WILL require time and effort. He takes some getting used to, but hes not bad overall.
He is so rude. He goes on so many tangents in class about arbitrary information that a lot of the time is also completely inappropriate. Treats students like literal children and it's definitely a power trip for him. I have been locked out of the lecture hall when showing up as the clock turned to 8 when someone 5 steps in front got into the class.
If you go to the lectures, do not worry about this class. Over 100 out of 300 students regularly don't show up to lecture, and I guarantee those are the ones giving the bad ratings. Professor Brooks gives numerous opportunities for EC if you go to class AND tips for exams. He may be harsh, but he's the type of Professor that you want and remember!
He's a really mean professor, never shows the respect to students that he feels entitled to as a professor. The class is hard, point blank. There is a hard average of around 60% on every test he gives, which says a lot about him as a professor. He forces you to take notes by hand in class, if taken at all. Would not recommend you take his class.
Never thought taking a 1000 level class would be harder than my 4000 level classes. Be prepared to walk out of class with the worst headache, professor is annoying. Acts like the tests are easy to pass when in reality you need a photographic memory to pass any of the tests.
Yeah, no. Biology as a subject is cool, just not with this professor, unfortunately. And the other options at FAU aren't any better, so I was forced to take his class. Never again will I take him as a professor. His exams are super hard and he is not lenient at all. He expects you to have the same knowledge as him, even though he has a degree.
The class is tough, but it is preparing you for harder science courses. Brooks is very funny and makes lectures interesting. He will be hard on you, but he is genuine and wants you to pass. Lots of extra credit points are available and he gives away some answers but you need to remember what he says.
This dude is not confused, or doesn't have the spirit, because he EMBODIES the spirit. You're guaranteed a good grade as long as you grind. As long as you go to the lectures and take good notes and NOT sleep in class you'll do good. With lectures you get both a show and a lesson, idk how this dude didn't become a comedian or actor. He's a mer...
Dr. Brooks was honestly the best professor I have had at FAU. He is tough and so is Biodiversity but his lectures were interesting and entertaining. He clearly knows his stuff and is setting you up to obtain a high level of understanding if you attend class. There is plenty of extra credit that will balance out your gradePlannng on taking him again
I attended this class this class with a friend after taking this his class last year. He is by far the rudest, inappropriate, obnoxious professor I ever had the misfortune of taken. He berates students in front of classes of 200+ students, practically bullying them for laughs. It seems he was a failed def jam comic that decided to get into teachin
They were one of the worst professors I have had in my 3 years of college. They spend most of the class making fun of students. They expect you to teach yourself the material and barely goes over it during lectures but make it mandatory to be there. Waste of time, waste of money, and a waste of a spot for a good professor
Dr. Brooks was one of the best professors I ever had. The class is very difficult however he does an amazing job in simplifying the processes. Attending class is VITAL to pass also studying the lecture notes booklet in advance. Dr. Brooks is also very funny and makes the lectures entertaining. Class consists of 4 exams, 4 quizzes and pop quizzes.
Nice teacher while intimidating at first sight, go to office hrs after the exam and he'll thoroughly explain your mistakes, attend EVERY lecture and take detailed notes from them (will be on the exams), funny, strict about no electronics in class, textbook is useless (didn't even use it), look at lecture booklet
One of the best professors I ever had. This class is MUCH more difficult than Biodiversity, yet Dr. Brooks does a great job still. Attend class, study topics early, especially genetics, and read lecture booklet. Same format: 4 exams, 4 quizzes, and pop iclicker quizzes. Few handwritten homeworks required towards end of semester. Amazing professor!
Worst professor I've ever had. He constantly explains the material by shouting and is one of those professors that likes to brag about how nobody is gonna get an A in his class. The class is formatted weird and there is too much work for no reason such as tests every week.
To say this class was hard would be an understatement. Dr. Brooks is an extremely tough guy. If you are sensitive, do not bother raising your hand in class. I took this course in a summer term, 6 weeks, almost impossible to fit that much material is a short time. Despite this class being extremely hard, I can say that I learned SO much.
His class was very difficult. Biggest recommendation is to have a study group and study as much as possible to pass his class. It's hard to bring your grade back up but he sometimes offer extra credit quizzes/assignments. Take advantage of asking questions on the discussion boards and don't fall behind.
Take another professor if you can! If he's only offered for the semester you need wait if you can. This class uses a point system. Red flag. Don't miss class & go to SI. I took him in the summer& I failed. He doesn't curve grades for anyone. He gives out a lot of pop quizzes. Don't miss a test either. He will give an essay one. He does not care.
I took him for bio principles and if you didn't go to the lectures there was no way you were going to pass. You need to make sure to watch the pre recorded lectures and study a lot in order to pass this class. He has an interesting teaching style, but it works. Majority of the kids failed the class/exams who didn't go to lectures.
One of FAUs best! Really enjoyed this class. Scored 95 and above every exam just by reading his booklet, going to SI and practicing life cycles on purpose games. Quick with grades, 68 page booklet for entire semester, and very interesting lectures. He will definitely wake you up at 8am with the banging, haha prepare for that. Amazing human being!
Would not take again. Does not care if the students pass or fail. Expects you to remember every small detail for any test. The things that we study for the test are not on the test at all. Rude to the students and tries to cover it up with jokes.
Worst professor I have ever taken at FAU. I was very sick during the semester and missed a couple of classes, was told "don't bother studying, you're not gonna pass". He is a very degrading teacher and looks down on students in the way he speaks to them. If he is the only professor available for this course, wait to take it. Avoid at all costs.
You need to attend class to understand the subject. ALL of his classes are lectures and you NEED to pay attention to understand the subject. The exams is 85% details that are found on his booklet or that he mentions in class. Good luck if you choose him!!!!
Brooks is amazing.Yes, this course needs an excessive amount of studying, but, it really gets you prepared of what's to come for future courses. You CAN'T breeze through this class. He's very funny, but very strict for the reason of wanting people to learn. I recommend this professor for those who WANT TO LEARN. Most likely best prof for undergrad.
he gets a bad rap but... it is not impossible to pass if you attend lectures and study frequently. he clearly explains what you need to do in order to succeed. no hw but 4 exams, 4 quizzes, and pop quizzes. plus lifeline material. he is quite funny in lectures as well. very important to attend lectures though!! everything is also very organized.
I took Dr.Brooks for biodiversity and he kept his class interesting even if it was an 8 am. If you come to class and just simply do the work and study then this class can be easy to pass. I thought he was funny and made biology interesting.
4 tests Buy notebook by dr brooks all you need to know is inside of it $90. Go to class he will teach everything in the book. Email important LL & SI will have important worksheets. SI worksheets follow the notebook from brooks lecture. Great for getting an A. Memorize everything make matching games for tests. He makes you match names on the test
Dr. Brooks is the best professor I have ever had. He makes it very clear at the beginning of the semester about what is needed in order to succeed in his class. He is also extremely funny and keeps the content fun, so paying attention was not hard! As long as you study hard and pay attention in class, you should be good to go!
I took him Fall 2022 & I actually liked Brooks. He actually cares about what he teaches & his lectures wont make you fall asleep in class. He gives hints for things that are on the test and if you go to SI, you are guaranteed to pass. I think the only downside to this class is that no electronics are allowed but it kind of helped me actually focus.
Dr.Brooks is a great professor. Took his 8am Bio Principles lecture. Gives A TON of extra credit, as long as you show up to class. He honestly just wants his students to pass. Gives us quiz answers and questions that will be on the test. To pass his tests, watch the recorded lecture videos. Textbook is not required, but lecture note book is needed.
Despite the negative feedback, as long as you go to lectures and do exactly what he says you need to in order to do well, you will. 4 exams and 4 quizzes with many opportunities for extra credit. Yes the material can be tough but if you attend lectures and study well you will succeed! I've taken him 2 semesters and have done well each time.
This was my 2nd rodeo with Brooks & I still feel the same. Amazing professor. This class takes an immense amount of studying if you'd like an A, so be prepared. But, he gets a bad rep for the solid fact that he points out that students aren't putting in the work and still want to go to med school. lol. Lectures are pretty interesting and mandatory.
I took Brooks for Biological Principles during the Summer term and I think he was a great teacher honestly. A lot of people talk trash because they don't keep up. That's the key: just do EXACTLY what he tells you, and you will be fine (he doesn't even ask anything that crazy people!).
people say professor brooks is a hard teacher he really isn't, if you show up, pay attention, and do the work its easy A. the class itself takes A LOT of studying because the quizzes and tests are very memory heavy... his class rules are a little difficult, but it's all because you have to pay attention. he's not as bad as everyone makes it seem
Professor Brooks is perhaps one of the best science professors at FAU. With a clear grading policy and plentiful extra credit opportunities in addition to a Canvas discussion board with supplemental assistance, he truly cares about his students and is hilarious. Beware of makeup exams, though, as these are essay-formatted.
The material is challenging for a low-level class. The course will be a breeze if you do what he says, like reading ahead and attending lectures. If not his class will be a gatekeeper, and you will fail. Brooks keeps his lectures interesting even at 8 am. Show face and collect your A.
Professor Brooks gets a bad rep for no reason. He made biodiversity interesting and he is so funny. A booklet is required for the class with all the needed material. He often goes off on tangents so I recommend only writing down what he says is important. He gives hints for the exam and extra credit as well. If you show up and study, you will pass!
Dr. Brooks is an amazing lecturer and hilarious professor. I highly recommend his class. The key to an A is to attend every lecture and note exam questions he gives out, study booklet pages for each unit ahead of time, take notes of LL, and revise content with Quizlets or go to tutoring at SLC. SI is useless, don't waste your time going.
Most people don't like Brooks and it's easy to see why. Heavy lectures, hard af tests, and he himself isn't very sympathetic. Tests are hard and specific and as someone who never studies, I just got by in this class. Toughest class I have taken yet but it is passable as long as you get at least a 50 on the exams and do all of the hw and EC.
I really struggled at the beginning of Brooks's class because it was my first semester, and I was not a good student when it came to studying. However, it was not as hard and stressful once I learned how to study. Brooks is a great professor for people who want to learn and give it their all.
I really enjoyed him. He made class interesting and easy to follow. He has a strong personality that is not for everyone but he does give lots of extra credit opportunities due to the material being so hard. I work full time and have a 5 year old daughter and passed with an 84. Not an easy A but if you try to do well you most likely will pass.
This was my 3rd time taking Dr. Brooks and still proves to be one of the best professors at FAU. Use study tactics from Biodiversity and Bio Principles. Read booklet and papers thoroughly to earn A. 3 written exams with optional cumulative final. 5 random iclicker quizzes and extra credit iclicker quizzes. Fascinating topics and incredible class!
Although Dr. Brooks was a fairly good teacher, and lots of information was learned, he is extremely disrespectful and will scream at students even during testing times.
You either love him or you hate him. To pass the course studying every day is required. There is no homework besides simple lifeline light assignments. The majority of your course grade is exams the last exam being worth the majority of your grade. He gives extra credit pop quizzes and gives out answers sometimes. He is rude but tries to be funny.
Professor Brooks has a polarizing personality and that is the main turnoff with this course. The class itself involves lots of studying as its relatively niche material and a lot of it at a time. With Brooks you will definitely learn a lot within the class. Overall, just pay attention to the lectures and study as much as you can for the tests.
At first, I was scared to take his class because of the ratings, but the reality is, that as long as you attend his lectures and take the notes he provides, you will be fine. Additionally, he offers opportunities for extra credit. Overall I liked the class.
Dr.Brooks was by far the worst professor I've taken. He would tell you basically, if you do not dedicate every single minute of your semester into this class or do not study "enough", might as well not study at all because you will fail. Says his class is insurmountably difficult, which created an atmosphere of unnecessary intimidation and stress
He's gonn give random quizzes so just go to class and be ready to basically teach yourself or else you will not know whats going on in lecture. Assignments are easy enough but he might assign some during lecture so look out for that and make sure you prep for exam days because they can be up to 100 questions and are not easy.
He curves the grades so it is "easier" to pass, but the material is very hard. Watch the videos he recorded explaining the power points and take notes, also do the SI worksheets to study and keep up with the classes. There is EC on his LL section and he does give a few pop quizzes which are EC. But beware and study for the exams.
Do yourself a favor and don't take biology with brooks. His tests are more difficult than the other professor for biology. He gives 130 question tests, which I normally speed through tests for other classes however I was crunched on time for his tests. His lectures are interesting though. Overall, do yourself a favor and take BSC w/ the other prof.
Took Brooks for Summer B. It was a 6 week course, it was fast paste so be prepared. He warns students about the expectations first day. To pass DO WHAT HE SAYS. Watch pre lecture videos and take notes. He couldnt cover everything in the videos during class due to short term. SI was very helpful. Tests were multiple choice expect part of final.
Professor Brooks has a unique teaching style that takes some getting used to. The class is challenging, but if you attend lectures, use the provided notes, and study hard, you can definitely do well. unstuckstudy AI was a game-changer for test prep.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. He will not hesitate to fail you. He's failed 70% of his class before. Not to mention it's a very hard and test heavy class especially for new comers.
Dr. Brooks is a phenomenal professor! He is hilarious during lectures, while also very insightful. The material can get a bit confusing, + he emphasizes that but doesn't overcomplicate it too much. His lecture book was super helpful and prepared me for exams.Little homework so your grade relies on tests/quizzes, so make sure 2 attend lectures!!
don't pick this man pls
He is great and I recommend him. You have to study for this course and you have to put in the work. He gives extra credit (a lot!). You can get extra credit by just going to class and taking the quizzes. Prerecorded lectures (WATCH THEM) and the workbook with ALL the info. Grading works for you if you study. Lock in and you'll pass with an A.
Sososo helpful and insightful! It can be difficult, but he always answers any questions you have. His little book was also super helpful on exams. Not many assignments so tests and quizzes make up most of your grade, so attending lectures is key (if you don't u will prob fail). He does get a little off-topic sometimes but it can be entertaining lol.
Not a hard class if you show up and study. Tests are short answer no multiple choice, asks questions about stuff not in the notes but mentioned in lecture and on supplemental readings. Fun interesting anecdotes. No hw just tests and pop quizzes, gives lots of ec on quizzes though. Need a bio elective? Take this class w him. Strict no phone policy!!
Bad. Don't do it.
I took him for both bio-principles and biodiversity and loved his classes. BE READY TO STUDY. He's funny, very organized with all lectures, homework is SOO easy. No curve on exams and no electronics allowed to be used class. Only buy his lecture notebook don't buy the textbook. His SI Trinity is amazing, REALLLLLY REALLY helpful she's how I passed.
This professor is extremely challenging. Not an easy instructor, and his grading scale is unreasonable!! I've never encountered a professor with such a poorly structured class layout like FR. Tests and quizzes account for nearly the entire grade, so if you perform poorly on any test, it can be very difficult to recover. Run before it is too late..
I LOVE BROOKS! This is a difficult course but that would be with any professor. He will tell you some of the test questions randomly so go to class! He is so funny and lectures so well! He uses his own book that he wrote so he knows it like the back of his hand. He might be a tough guy but he really tries to help you. Pop quizzes for extra credit!
I don't think I passed a single exam. There's a certain way you need to be studying for quizzes and exams, as it almost feels like there's little to no connection between what he lectures and what he tests on. It almost feels like he's trying to trick you with the test questions. He scares you and yells very loudly, but he's nice sometimes. 1/10.
Brooks is such a good professor. There is a lot of info, but going to lectures and paying attention saved my grade (as well as the GENEROUS extra credit he gives). I passed every test except 1, which was mostly my fault lol. He can get a little off topic but its funny. It seems like he is out to get you but he is really helping.
Never ever take him. He wants you to know EVERYTHING for the exams, his textbook is useless, you gotta study on your own to pass, even if you do so on the exam you will be lost, I promise you, because he mixes up information so badly that you wouldn't be able to recall what you have studied. Your success in class depends on your luck and randomness
If you study hard for the tests you'll do well. I like how he does his grades because I failed two tests and still ended up with an A. I say go to class because he does extra credit quizzes. I only found the Unit 3 and 4 lectures interesting because it was easier material. If you study the notes booklet, videos, and go to SI you'll do fine.
Brooks is not terrible. He is unforgiving though. He only grades off 4 exams and 4 quizzes which are in his course outline. Quizzes are easy. Exams are tough. SI will lead to you passing the course. You MUST study an exorbitant amount to even get a B. Lifeline is unhelpful and do not expect extra credit. PLEASE attend his lectures to maybe get EC.
DO NOT PICK BROOKS. All lecture he will yap with front row students and waste like 30 min total of lecture time just from talking. He has his own booklet with notes which is nice but not all of the information on there can be useful for exams. There will be 4 regular quizzes, 4 exams, and pop quizzes for extra points and random attendance.
He was a strict professor, but you will pass the class as long as you are great at memorization. Trinity was a great SI TA, you will pass if you attend the SI!
Horrible teacher, makes you buy a $100 book that he made and then barely uses it. He was mostly test for grades. He would yell at you for sitting in the back of the class and would say that if you are not in the first 4 rows you are going to fail. Like sir there are over 200 people in this class not everyone can be in the front.
Horrible. Does not motivate his students. Tell them they're gonna fail almost every lecture. Cracks more jokes than actually teaching. And makes you spend more than $100 but proceeds to say all you need is that tiny booklet
i like his lecture booklet+he is super funny.Although I am not a fan of his teaching style too much, he introduces topics rly confusingly instead of building it up, requiring a lot of studying.I feel like he also wants us to understand it the first go.I get it can b hard, but he doesn't seem like he wants to help us and seems like he hates questions
WARNING: NEVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Believe the bad reviews. His tests? Completely disconnected from lectures. Ask a question? Expect sarcasm. Need help? You'll get judgment, not guidance. I'm a straight-A student who works hard, but in this class, effort means nothing. I had to withdraw to protect my academic dignity. Save yourself—stay away!
Dr. Brooks is a great teacher if you're willing to put time into his courses. BSC1010 & 1011 are rigorous, you won't be successful if you don't go to lecture. He is blunt, but he wants students to succeed. These courses make you develop good study habits. Brooks is funny, having a boring teacher for this content will bore you to death.
GO TO SI!!! Trinity is AMAZING, she helped me get A's in both BSC 1010 and 1011. You need to get his lecture book, it helps a lot. Dr. Brooks prepares you for being a science major. He is harsh but you need to know this information if you want to go to med school or a postgraduate. If you aren't interested in the material, it will be hard.
The lecture isn't "mandatory", but he tells you potential exam questions in class (meaning: GO TO CLASS!!) If you don't like Brooks, you just aren't doing your work. He gives you every resource needed to be successful + way more. Take advantage of every SI worksheet. Great professor, class was very engaging!
This class is hard. But Brooks is an very good prof who tells you EXACTLY what you need. He'll give practice questions, tidbits before exams, and a booklet that outlines all on the exam. He's a bit strange about answering questions, but still - if you follow him - you'll find this class interesting, fun, and rewarding. If you don't, good luck.
in my opinion this class is possible to do extremely well if you do exactly as he says. i got A's on all bsc1010& 1011 exams and ended 1011 with a 95% & have over 100% in 1010 currently. his exams are very application based and you have to really understand the material to do well. he is a really good teacher and trinitys exam reviews are helpful.
If you attend every class and put in effort, this class is not very difficult. If you are someone that skips consistently or doesn't have time to put in lots of effort, this class is definitely not for you. His exams are very difficult and require lots and lots of studying.
He is a tough professor, but if you show up to class and put in the time to study, and do what he says, you will succeed. He does give extra credit, but he does it in a pop quiz format, so make sure you go to every single class because you never know when he is giving a diagnostic quiz. He does try to make class enjoyable as well.
Prof brooks changed my study habits a lot. i will be honest i struggled and got a C on test 1 and 2, D on test 3 and then I locked in for test 4 and got a A, ending w an A. He gives canvas exam extra credit every test. quizzes are iclicker with extra credit. attendance optional, but helpful and gives extra credit qs. gives ec qs randomly in class.
Lock in freshies. He is a hard professor, but he is this way because he is trying to prepare you for whats next. I recently graduated and took another class of his. He is an awesome lecturer and he is passionate about bio and marine life. You will learn a lot. Pay attention, go to class and study and you will be just fine. Slackers beware
This class is HARD, and you need to study those powerpoints for your life. If you have to take him DON'T buy his textbook, it's a scam as it's his book he wrote and makes money off of. I spent $285 to never open it once. He lied and said it's mandatory. The annotated notes you can get, didn't help me but maybe you. Go to the lectures! Make quizlets
He's super nice, funny, and makes class interesting. Anyone who complains didn't study or put in the work. His grading is clear, do the homework, study his book, and pay attention in class. He's very organized, gives pop quizzes for extra credit, and overall was amazing for this course.
Professor Brooks is so funny and makes long lectures way more bearable. The class requires a LOT of studying so if you have good work ethic do it.. If you put in the work you will be fine. Show up to class! He does extra credit pop quizzes/iclicker questions, and will give you questions that will be on the test so its worth going!
Dr.Brooks is a very traditional professor, he wants his students to actually know the material rather than just get a passing score. There is ALOT of content in this course so if you're not willing to put the time to actually study, then don't bother. He does get off track during his lectures alot but other than that i thought he was a great.
I LOVE BROOKS!! He was so funny, so caring, genuinely made an effort to help students understand the material any way possible. This class was A LOT of information; you have to put in minimum 40 hrs a week of studying or you will likely not do well. He also gives plenty of extra credit opportunities but does not accept any late work.
I had to take him twice because I love his enthusiasm. You have to go to SI to get an A in this class, but if you memorize everything on the PowerPoints you will do fine, everyone hates on him because he likes to challenge his students but he gives plenty extra credit
He's a very funny professor. He does care about his students. HOWEVER, I study an average of 12-18 hours a week for his class and I still don't get past an 80% on his exams. He purposely words the questions very difficult to try to make you get them wrong which I don't like. He does keep everyone engaged and he's great at teaching though.
Decent amount of extra credit given. STAY on top of Lifeline, very much a grade booster. Brooks himself is honestly a great professor, very entertaining, lectures are typically always fun to watch, especially his random videos he wants to show us in class. ATTEND SI. Exams are content heavy, you will have to teach yourself for the most part.
GO TO THE SI TUTORING AND YOU WILL PASS!! Class attendance isn't mandatory, and i learned SO MUCH MORE just by going to the SI sessions. Attend the 3:00 SI classes (gen sci building, room 202 iirc). Also, everything in the lecture notes is on the test! Print it out, highlight bits, write notes in it! Memorize it! Prof. is eccentric but not cruel.
If i'm honest the class is hard but not bad. it's just hard because you have to study and try. His exams are very heavily graded. The LL assignments and EC is what is helping me because I didn't do well on his exams. SI helpful too. GO TO CLASS he gives sometimes ec and says a lot of info. This class you can't teach yourself so you need to go. GL:(
Hes funny, i definitely enjoyed his lectures because he makes it alot of fun. but he did mention he is a marine biology major/teacher, so most of what we learned was marine bio which i wasnt a big fan of. TOUGH tests, i studied daily and would still fail.
IF THIS IS THE ONLY REVIEW YOU READ! 1. Take Frazier instead of him 2. if you end up here, go to si. 3. Studied everyday for 3 weeks and still failed. He will single you out in class and is rude. Schedules a 30 point quiz 2 days before thanksgiving so you cant go home. Save yourself. If u arent strong in bio, DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brooks is a horrible choice. He slaps himself in the face when you ask what page we are on. He jumps like a child when anyone is confused. I am being literal. I don't feel he is safe around students, and no matter how many times he is reported to the dean, his tenure saves him every time. single. time.
In my experience, this professor creates an unsafe, unsupportive environment. He encourages behavior like bullying/harassment and relies on an error-filled packet instead of a textbook, yet tests on book material. He has been reported repeatedly, and his tenure has saved him every single time. He will harass anyone who asks a question.
TAKE FRAZIER INSTEAD. He singles out vulnerable/disabled students. If there aren't any, you're the target. He is disgustingly rude. Doesn't allow you to read the textbook and requires you to study off his false and misspelled Word document (of which he is very proud). I'm sure he was talented 30yrs ago, today he craves the failure of his students.
Brags about how hard his quizzes are and even said he himself wouldn't get a 100 on his quizzes. There's extra credit if you attend class but overall chose anyone else for biodiversity because he isn't very good at teaching and his exams are very hard. A lot studying is needed to keep your gpa up in this class.
I didnt pay attention to any of the lectures, watched netflix the entire time. If you study his notes and powerpoint you'll be fine. Failed the first 2 exams and still ended with a B+. Attendance isnt mandatory, but I attended every lecture so that i could get the extra credit from the pop quizzes he would give. pop quizzes dont affect your grade.
overall a great professor but you need to really lock in. attendance isnt mandatory but i would def go since he gives extra credit quizzes and sometimes gives test questions and answers. grades are made up of lifeline assignments, 4 quizzes, and 4 exams. beware the exams ARE HARD, but honestly if you study hard and pay attention you should do well.
