One of the best political science profs, his calss is fun and interesting. The tests are also easy.
Expect lots of reading and discussions, but he's pretty laid back about research papers. Rarely follows an attendance policy. Interesting, friendly, kind man.
Dr. Carroll is not only the hottest professor on campus but the most sincere and intelligent. If he didn't hold such interesting lectures, I would just sit in the back of class and fantasize about how I could get some extra credit. You must experience.
My favorite teacher EVER. It's obvious he knows what he's talking about and tries really hard to make everything interesting and fun for everyone. Plus, he has some amusing stories and a good sense of humor. Take him if you possibly can.
He really enjoys teaching and that makes his classes extremely educational, take him for as many classes as possible
Makes Poli-sci interesting, especially when he busts into a fake british accent. He made me laugh and his lectures were clear and easily understood. I think he is a great teacher.
Best class I've ever taken. He made it interesting and fun.
This class was great. He goes on rabbit trails to some degree, but at least they are interesting rabbit trails. He is full of very useful information and he is up to date on his European governments. Plus he is great to talk to on the smoke breaks.
Great prof! I had him in a summer session and it was still very interesting and informative.

He is a very interesting guy. His notes are unorganized but he does make a study guide for the tests and those seem to be very helpful. He has awesome stories and is very genuine. He makes the class interesting yet the tests are fairly difficult to understand.
This prof is awesome! his notes start on the right side of the board but that's ok. He gives very good anecdotes and his test are alright. He makes politics interesting
I hate political science, but I enjoyed this class. He has very intersting lectures and a lot of fun stories. He actually makes poli sci interesting and he's super helpful when you ask for it.
GO TO CLASS!!!
I really liked his class it wasn't too hard just go to class and pay attention then study for the tests. He gives alot of good information and he isn't afraid to say that america sucks in alot of areas. He is also a really nice guy if you ever talk to him out of class.
I was in awe each and every week he taught. He is an amazing instructor and I felt lucky to be in the room with a guy this smart.
Carroll's cool. He has great stories about Europe. Gotta love the box and arrow thingys (if you've had a class w/ him you know what i'm talkin' about)
Awesome professor and IMHO among the best at SHSU. Unfortunately, most of the students were dead and quiet esp. for a political science class where debate is expected. I was probably one of the most talkative in class (in the right way, asking questions, making commments, etc.) Left the class with an 88 but helped me out with an A! Great professor!
He is a great prof. The class seems to fly by because it is so interesting. The tests are fairly easy as long as you pay attention. Take him if you get the chance.
Great teacher, very interesting and has some insanely interesting classes. Has a pretty good British accent and can keep everyone interested in a class that really isnt ment to great. He gets off topic a bit but overall his stories are pretty interesting. Oh and hes OCD which will give the class a few laughs.
He is really nice. Always making jokes/ hardly a boring class Wish I had more classes I needed to take that he taught. One of my favorite teachers(but get to class early for a good seat)
NOTES! This guy loves to write on his board. They are scattered and clustered. If YOU don't have organization skills, then you won't last long. He's informative, but there are just some things that can't be understood in his class. I thought it was boring and difficult all tests, no outside work...all in all it was hard.
He is a really great teacher. His notes on the board can be a little disorganized, but his tests draw directly from the lecture notes. I would highly recommend him.
I really enjoyed his class, I thought he was very interesting. He had his boring days were I was ready to go. You do not need the book, I repeat you do not need it dont waste money. Just listen to him in class, copy notes from board, they are a bit scattered but if you listen while you write you will understand. Dont try to write it the way he does
His notes are next to impossible to follow, you will drive yourself mad if you try to. Cool guy but it's generally a dull class. Don't be fooled by the first couple of weeks, you will not enjoy this class but it's possible if you somewhat apply yourself. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK.
i loved him!!! he is a little scatter brained when writting on the board but i loved his class. he was funny, and YOU DO need the book!! the reviews are clear and follow the book. i wanted to take him this summer but all his classes are filled! id deff take him again
great professor! didn't take attendance, but his tests mostly came from lectures. He would do a review the class before the test and always gave bonus questions. 4 tests, no other work. notes were a little messy, but he has great stories and if you listen and attend class, you should do fine.
All tests are over lectures. I started out going to every class but I found that it was a waste of time because I could never make any sense out of what he was saying. His notes are just all over the board, mostly key words. Tests are hard. If you are able to sit there and listen really well and take notes, you should be fine. But other wise...
he is a pretty awesome teacher. has a lot of funny stories too! the material is what was hard about the class for me, but if you study your notes& print out his reviews, you should do better on the tests than i did ( I made C's and B's) He also is not bad to look at for an older gentleman...like if you left brad pitt out in the sun forever
HE IS AWESOME! I thought his class would be really hard at first, because political science is boring, but he made it seem really easy. I passed all of the tests, and he didn't take role. He tended to get off topic a lot, and we almost never were in class the whole time. The exams were easy. Don't buy the book
Dr. Carroll is AWESOME!! I've taken him for 3 out 4 POL classes. Test are straight from lecture discussions and notes so I definitely suggest going to every class. He ALWAYS lets you out early on Fridays (15 minute lectures) and usually cancels class the day before holidays/breaks. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
He was an extremely good professor. Test questions came directly from the lecture, I never once used the book and still made high B's and A's. He always let class out early and he did not take any attendence. I would take him again if i hd anymore poly sci classes left!
Great Professor! Goes pretty quick, but very approachable. Lets class out early and tests are pretty easy. Just study notes. Highly recommend!
To be honest, he's not the most organized person in the world as his notes tend to be all over the place but he's a teacher who has a lot of knowledge about stuff. Once he finds his center, his lectures are very interesting. Get the book cause you will be reading a lot. His test format is awesome!!!
Probably one of the most BORING classes i have ever taken! He appears to be dyslexic because he writes all over the board, first in the middle, then on the right, then on the left. The tests are what he writes on the board though, plus he gives a short study guide that tells you what will be on the test. Not sure i would recommend him though :/..
funny guy. energetic. get in, get in, get out kind of class. touches on topics that wont be on test.
Although he writes all over the board + his notes are very hard to follow, he's an amazing professor. He's funny, helpful, and very knowledgeable! In order to do good: read the book, record his lectures, and write your OWN notes (not the ones on the board). Would take him again.
Really nice guy and brilliant, but class is really dull. He just stands in front of the class and scribbles bunch of words on the board. No power points or anything. Hard to pay attention to class. Tests are all essay/short essay, very difficult. I would avoid this professor bc the class is VERY disorganized. Have to read book, which is LONG...
VERY good professor.. knows his stuff.. interesting/funny stories.. 15min class is not unusual.. just show up, take notes, look over book, and you'll do well.. would take it again!!
Take this class if you want an easy A. Cancelled all the time. TTH class was usually only 20-30 minutes. Never over an hour. Gave test reviews and extra credit.
If you aren't into Political Science, then this is the perfect class. His notes are hard to follow, so you are better off reading the book. He cancels class a lot (most of the time with very short notice), and let's class out early. The review sessions are kind of pointless. However, it was an okay class and I got a B.
He does not use powerpoints, so you really do have to pay attention as he talks. In my class we go out early alot. He had some great stories and made the subject fun. You didnt have to take the final if you liked your grade and the tests weren't too bad.
Dr. Carroll is a great professor! He doesn't use Powerpoints, so you have to listen to his lectures & take notes accordingly. I found his class easy & enjoyable. He bases the tests off of his lectures. I didn't touch the books & got an A in his class. He makes class interesting with occasional jokes & lets class out early most of the time.
He does not use Powerpoints so if you need things like that to help study this is not the class for you. There are 3 tests plus the final and 1 out of class assignment which is super easy. I would definitely take him if you could. and you always get out of class early as well
his notes are awful he just draws all over the board in charts or diagrams talking about the subject so its not really helpful your best chance is to take your own notes and read the book. his exams i found difficult despite them being over his lectures he doesn't really specify what he wants you to know. He's an average professor
Dr. Carroll is incredibly knowledgeable about Foreign and Domestic Policies. His class is interesting! However, he is OCD about using only one white board while there are 4 others to choose from. He erases and then decides to cancel class constantly because it doesn't erase completely. Take your notes from what he says, not what he writes. Easy A!
Gives only four tests that make up your grade. However, he drops the lowest test grade. I suggest taking a laptop for note taking. Pay attention to what he says as well as what he writes. Have to stay up to date on current topics.
Carroll is great! You have to go to class for sure. Don't bother buying the book. Make sure you go over all your notes for a test, he will add random questions on the test that weren't on the study guide but, over all I really enjoyed his class.
If you show up to class you're fine. He's a very interesting professor and he really knows what he's talking about. Really enjoyed his class! Didn't use the book, don't bother getting it.
I had him TR and he usually cut the lectures down to an hour for us instead of the full 1.5. SHOW UP! If you skip, you'll miss a lot and it will help a lot to take notes. He writes everything on the board and sometimes it will get a little messy up there with diagrams. I recommend getting the book and studying for tests (they can be kind of tough).
GREAT professor! The only problem there is, is that you need to write down EVERYTHING he says. That seems tough, but it's not. The tests are tough if you fail to do that. He curves BIG time. I recommend him!
His lectures can be kind of confusing, if you miss any part of it you'll pretty much be lost the rest of the class. Doesn't take attendance, but skipping definitely hurts your grade. The only grades are 3 tests weighted evenly (there's four tests, but he drops your lowest).
Let's get this straight first- history is not my thing. That being said, this class was better than expected. His structure is pretty clear. You come to class- listen to a lecture- take a test. There are four. He doesn't use power point and only writes on the board. He does do a simple study guide. If you do it and ask questions, you'll be fine.
He gives study guides that are VERY easy to find through the lectures and textbook and almost exact to the test, however since he does this people do well the first exam then never show up again till the next exams (myself included). BIG MISTAKE. SHOW UP TO ALL THE LECTURES (he ends early anyways) and take notes, easy A. I regret never showing up.
Would not take again
Completely lecture based. I'd recommend using a laptop as note-taking method because it will be faster to type what he's saying. There are 4 tests and he drops your lowest grade. Try not to miss class and make sure you have a buddy who knows how to take notes. Tests can be a bit tough if you underestimate them. Textbook helps a lot if you need help
The only grades you get from this class is four tests, and he'll drop the lowest test score at the end of the semester as long as it's above a 0 (meaning you actually have to show up to all of the exams). Use your computer to take notes because he talks really fast and sit towards the front if you have bad eyesight because he rights on the board.
Dr. Carroll was such a good teacher. I had him for American Government (which I can't stand) and had a super easy time. To be honest as long as you listen and take notes, you don't even need to read to get an A.
Course is based on exams only. Lecture based on the structure of the text that he assigns. Text is a supplement to the lecture for more information and to clarify if the lecture wasnt fully understood. Study guids given and on the exam you are given a topic bank of about 15 and have the option to write 5IDs+1 essay or 8IDs. IDs are definitional.
He gives nothing but tests, but if you pay attention in class you will have no problems at all. They are all fairly easy. Im not good at government at all but i made a high B overall. Would recommend to anyone.
Very passionate about political science making things very clear. He has 4 tests and drops 1 of them. Make sure to go to class and study the review and youll get a easy A. Take notes on a computer because he tends to talk fast, but he make things clear and writes on the board. Hands down favorite teacher for the 2016 spring semester
Only gives 4 tests. Has a review for each test that tells you everything to study. I got a perfect 100 in the class and never bought the book.
He is a very good teacher. As long as you attend class and take good notes so that you understand later or can go in the book to find more info for study guide purposes. If you do the study guides you should have no problem getting a good grade in the class.
He is very passionate about the subject making, what I expected to be a boring class, extremely enjoyable. Lectures are rather short with discussion greatly encouraged.
He was an awesome professor and made every attempt he could to help you pass the course. If you didn't study, pay attention or take notes than you're not going to pass. He teaches on a need to know basis and only tells you the info you need. He does say you have the option to buy the book, but I did not need it. I would defiantly recommend him.
He's the best. He's a little all over the place, but he's really sweet and is willing to help. I wish I would've payed more attention and maybe I could've done better this semester.
He is a great professor. All his exams come from his lectures, so pay attention. It might help to read the book as well, but he does a great job in lecture and going over everything that i never touched my book. He is funny and you can tell he loves his job.
Prof Carroll's lecture was fun! He is a nice person, and is interested in your learning. He wants you to be involved with politics. In my head, he resembled the perfect prof to teach me about politics. I would take him again if I had to take another politics class.
He is a great professor, he is always willing to help. He gives reviews for the exam's, which basically are the tests. So if you study, you'll be fine. He drops the lowest of your four exam grades-including the final. Definitely recommend taking him! You will not regret it! Would love to have taken him again!
Pretty awesome guy. He gives good lectures, which makes up a majority of the test. Textbook comes in handy because it has more details than his lectures. He only grades four tests, drops the lowest one. Sometime he ends class early.
Although I did not receive a good grade, Professor Carroll is a great professor. There is no homework, only test. If you are good in History you will have no problem but that was not the case for me. If you read the textbook you will do better on test but it is not mandatory. He will cancel class with no hesitation. Just show up for lecture.
I did not like his class. He isnt a bad professor its just his lecturing is extremely dry and boring and he repeats himself alot. He writes notes on the board but they are helpless. It is better to write what he says. If you miss class you miss what he says so you will need the book to supplement. His study guides are terrible so go to class.
Professor Carroll is awesome! He really loves to teach American Government and really cares about his students. He wants everyone to pass. His class is super easy and gives you a study guide to do before each exam
Amazing Professor! Very caring for his students and wants everyone to learn and pass! Texas Government is a breeze with his lectures! Take notes and do his study guides.
He truly wants you to pass and to have an understanding of government. His tests are multiple choice and true/false. Some of the questions are worded strange but if you ask him he will explain. The textbook isn't really required but it is helpful.
Lectures were almost pointless to attend. If you show up for the review day and exams you will pass. Use a recording device for lectures if you do go because he talks fast and doesn't always repeat important info.
Decent teacher but, you only taking 4 test throughout the semester which is horrible if you are bad at testing. There isn't any extra credit involved just 4 test, THAT IS IT!
His notes are pointless that he writes on the board. You might as well try to write down what comes out his mouth. His study guides before the exams are somewhat helpful but not really. Don't miss class, you'll miss a lot.
Students complain that you have to write what he says instead of what's just on the board, but I hope they know you're supposed to do that. Hence the point of a LECTURE CLASS, to take good notes not be lazy and copy the board. He is an amazing professor, very educated, caring, and willing to answer questions. He's a great guy, would take again
Anyone who is saying, "what he writes on the board doesnt make sense" is obviously lazy and cant keep up with a rather simple topic. Hes a very charming and good professor. The students who call him boring are just kids who show up to class late, wear headphones during class, and writes what's on the board instead of actually paying attention.
Dr. Carrol is great. His lectures are awesome and the information is clear and easy to understand.
Professor Carroll lectures from the first minute until the last. He is very monotone and quiet at times so it was hard to hear him, but he does write the important topics on the board. He doesn't take attendance, but the exam is based on his lectures. He does give a steady review and actually goes over the review in class.
He's literally the best teacher ever! He really cares about his students, and I love him!! He is the cutest thing ever... If you write what is on the board, you will totally pass. 11/10 recommend the class!!!
Dr. Carroll is AMAZING!! If you show up, you pass. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you want a good grade, show up. He lectures the whole 50 minutes but they are easy to follow and he always allows discussion after he goes over a few things! He's amazing and everyone that gave him less than 5/5 stars is crazy!
Great professor! Very informed with great lectures!
Professor Carroll isn't a bad teacher, but he is a bad note taker. u have to write what he says not what he writes on the board. At least I did because I am NOT good @ history of any kind. He is really sweet though. You don't have to have the book to pass, but it would definitely help. I got the book but I don't use it. He gets the test back fast
William Carroll is honestly the sweetest and most adorable professor ever. He constantly asks if there are any questions after a topic, and makes sure we understand. He does lecture from start to finish, but its not bad, and I don't like history. oh, and you don't need to buy book, lecture is straight from book so no need to buy.
Show up, take notes, and you're golden. Every class is just him giving a lecture, no group work or big projects or pop quizzes. He only grades tests and he makes those very straightforward, and on the class before the test he will go over literally any questions you have. He also sends out a test review. Easy to pass, and he is so sweet.
He is always making a joke about some political thing. Very knowledgeable and intelligent! He knows what he's doing. The text books aren't required because he chooses them and teaches right out of them. Gives you reviews that are exactly the test. Gives short answer (short IDs) but are NOT hard.
Class is not mandatory but I would advise you to go because he does not lecture off of powerpoint. If you miss a class you will have to get your notes from someone else or hope that the information is in the book. The book is not mandatory but it is helpful for studying. He always gives study guides but you have to fill them out with your notes.
He is a great professor and he wants his students to succeed. He does not teach off powerpoint so if you take his class be prepared to take good notes and actually pay attention. If you listen, take notes, and use the study guide you will pass.
Great professor overall. Very knowledgeable about politics and keeps everything in relevant. Makes class enjoyable with his funny anecdotes that relate back to his lectures. Highly respected and highly recommended.
Dr. Carroll is one of the best professors I have had during my time at Sam Houston. I had him for three separate courses and all of them were very interesting and fun to be in. His tests are written, but he gives you PLENTY of options for what you want to write about! Take good notes and participate in the discussions, and you will do just fine!
Dr. Carroll's a great professor, definitely knows what he's talking about. His reviews are just like his lessons, but you have to write down what he lectures rather than what he writes on the board. I Would definitely take him again.
Professor Carroll is a great professor. He takes really hard material such as government and makes it as simple as he can for us to learn. Doesnt use powerpoints so you have to really pay attention to what he is saying and writing on the board. You would only need the textbook if you would want a little extra help in the class.
Dr. Carroll is an amazing professor! He knows what he is talking about and he is very passionate about American and European politics. His tests are not hard. He offers extra credit. Show up to class and take good notes then you will pass.
pretty simple easy class. YOU NEED TO STUDY. Test are like the review tbh but you need to know more of the subjects on the review.
I've had Dr. Carroll for two semesters and I love the way he teaches. There's no assignments just exams. He also gives out extra credit and drops the lowest test grade at the end of the semester. He makes learning fun and interesting. I would strongly advise someone to take one of his classes.
Mr. William is awesome. He loves what he teaches. You can ask him anything about American government and he knows it. He stays up to date with everything and knows his stuff. He's kinda difficult to take notes from but you'll get the hang of it. Gives out reviews that help so much! He's kinda funny too. Great professor! Would take him again.
There weren't any lectures b/c it was an online course, however, the exams were tricky for me. Even looking through the textbook and online i couldn't find the correct answers- a lot of people made A's but I don't really know how. he's very responsive when it comes to technical problems and is really nice and flexible if something comes up :)
He only gives 4 test for grades. He also makes sure everyone has time to understand the lecture and likes to have great discussions.
this class is pretty easy as long as you show up. he will send reviews and drop the lowest test grade. i would sit close to the front as he is soft spoken. his notes are a little hard to follow but if you listen to what he says you'll understand. overall good professor and class, would recommend you take him!
Professor Carroll is so sweet & adorable. The class consists of 4 exams. In class you need to write down what he's saying because you won't get everything you need from what he writes on the board. I used the textbook to study for every exam. He will answer any questions so don't be afraid to ask him, he will clarify anything you don't understand.
He's a great professor but I didn't do as well as I wanted in his class because his class was lecture-heavy. But he was a great professor and has very sweet and if you need help you can go talk to him.
I think he may be retiring but although he's a nice old man his lectures were just so hard for me to follow.
Amazing professor, if you like lectures and test well.
