good teacher, prepares you well for tests
not bad, prolly the best one at depaul for calc.
A great professor for taking Discrete Math. I liked his style of teaching, and had a great way of conveying all the mathematical concepts.
Straight forward. Doesn't take attendance, only showed up once a week to take the quizzes, since all quizes/tests are taken straight from the homework. His lectures are extremely boring...the book was more exciting to read than listening to him.
Took Chin for all 3 courses under BMS. Great teacher! You don't need the book...he gives fantastic notes. If you pay attention and study the examples, you'll do well.
This professor may know what he's talking about--but hasn't a clue how to convey that clarity to his students. After the drop date there were 5 students left.
thats a lie, no one really dropped. however, it is true, he is a lousy in getting the main point across.
not very hard if you go to class lets you know exactly what is going to be on the tests and quizes
This teacher was one of the worst that I have had at DePaul, even the teachers that I cant understand were better. He doesnt give good examples and does not tell what is going to be on the tests or quizes because "that is cheating"
do not take this teacher unless you are really good at math and can teach yourself. he assumes you know a lot already about stats - and chances are you don't and thats why youre taking the class. i got a D.
He is a really nice guy, but not always the best teacher. He does assume you know a lot of stuff. His class was interesting though.
His class was pretty easy, although his teaching methods aren't of the most interesting I've had. He really is a good guy though and willing to help you out if you need it.
He tries to explain things as best he can, but that's not always enough. Still, he constantly tries to help if you don't understand. Nice guy all around.
clear helpful but maybe a litlle to rushed

Took BMS 126 and got an A but took BMS 142 and got a C. He shouldnt teach that class at all. He was not helpful and very boring. I thought he was a jackass too cause he wouldnt regrade my test when I had some correct marked wrong.
He's a bit boring, nice, but easy. His expectations are very clear. The only thing I hated were those extra problems besides the regular homework; they were pretty challenging.

This guy really sucks! He is sooooooooooo boring. He assumes that you already know alot of stuff, and on top of it he's not very clear at all. He has the tendency to drift off into other topics while he's in the middle of another topic. His tests are NOTHING like the homework. BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!
He is horrible! He talks in lecture like we would already know everything. He is very unclear. I dropped his class.
Chin is a terrible teacher. He gets bothered when u ask 4 help, and seems to have an attitude. He is very unclear and seems to go on and on when no one knows what the hell he is talking about. He sucks!!
I say we petition to get this guy FIRED! He does not care if you don't understand. I think hes in it for the $ (ha, ha). Seriously, PLEASE dont take this class. Unless you are a Math major, you WILL have to take it over. Very unclear, has very unrealistc expectations come test time. Tests are NOTHING like the homework.
Ignore all the bad posts about this class, they are from losers who are failing the class. It is a hard class but you might learn some useful stuff if you take the time to learn your****.
stuck up and inconsiderate
I dont know what all these bad comments are about! Chin is a great guy- he explains EVERYTHING to the last detail, and if you have a question...ASK! He will make sure you understand it. VERY clear about exams, gives you practice exams which are almost IDENTICAL. He let me take my exam early so I could go on vacation for Spring Break. TAKE HIM!!!!!!
It was a very easy class. It is based on a quiz every week and a final paper. I missed 3 of the classes and I am pretty sure I didnt do well on the tests. I still passed with a 'B' He is a very interesting professor.
Never take him for a night class he is very difficult to keep up with and you have quizzes every night I study alot and still got a C.
he tends to go off topic and talks about cats a lot, but other than that he is a pretty good teacher.the midterm and final are curved. the only thing is, you need to go to class for the quizzes because those are a big part of your grade.
Sure his practice problems are identical to the exams. But who on earth is able to memorize every single last detail? I thought he went a little too fast during lectures and is usually too busy fixing his hair to notice people are not following him. I got an A, but it wasn't easy. Don't take him unless you have no other choice, esp. not at night.
Great teacher! Explains everything clearly. Not nerdy and no accent, unlike half the math department. Daily quizzes are easy as long as you have a clue as to what is going on.
The best BMS Professor one can possibly have at DePaul! He is always ready to help, plus he grades easy. I am not very good at Math, but I understood everything he explained. If you listen in class, take notes, and do the homework, you will definitely get a B or higher. I highly recommend this professor. He is just the best!
I suck at math but did great! He grades pretty easily. Plus he doesn't try to trick you and the quizzes aren't bad if you pay attention. Highly recommended.
You need to teach yourself in this class. He teaches well, but not in its simplest form. He doesn't give shortcuts or anything that will make the material mone digestible. Don't take him in a night class!!! I may take him in BMS 142, he is okay, but not in a 3 hour night class!
Worst professor ever.... only talks to the board...never understood anything he taught. He makes you feel stupid.
As good as can be for a hard class
great focal point class, five weeks on blackjack and five weeks on poker... first half of the class you talk about math and odds, second half you play in tournaments for extra credit... grade is based on homework, one quiz, and a book report... pretty easy A
class was fun and profitable
easy class
WORST PROFESSOR EVER...didn't teach anything. I worked so hard and didn't pass. Don't waste time with him take someone else. It's not worth your time and money.
Honestly, he didn't teach anything. He's doesn't do math where it's understandable, like to do random mathamatics his own way. I definately think you should switch teachers asap and only take him as a last resort. It's a hard class if you've never had cal before.
He is one of the best professors I've had so far at DePaul. Explains everything, willing to answer questions, easy grader. He tries to make the material interesting.I highly recommend him.
Chin is extremely unclear. He only talks to the board. He skips steps when explaining problems. Chin is all over the place. He talks to his students as if they were mathmaticians.
A horrible teacher, with an arrogant, elitist, "I'm much smarter than you" attitude. Seemed to take great pleasure in showing how much smarter he was than the students, whom he was supposed to be teaching. Assumed that you already knew everything. Few examples he worked were very unclear and unhelpful. Discouraged me from taking math for years.
Ok. so hes not so bad. But yea he is hard to understand, and he makes things a little more complicated. I would suggest buying the solutions manual so that when you dont understand his way of doing things, you can look up how to actually do it for yourself. But, nice guy, kinda to himself a little.
Good class made more fun by teacher. Don't divide by zero or you will DIE BY ELECTROCUTION
Esay class, for me. Each week has a quize, mid-term and final are based on the homework which do not have to turn in.
He does not explain things well, and when you ask him a question he seems to think your an idiot. Also he will show you the wrong way to do a problem on purpose which really just confuses you more than anything else.
Good teacher explains everything well. If you get too far behind and ask a question that is obvious he will not answer. Quiz every week, midterm, and final. Both have simple problems and are fairly easy if u do the hw
Straightforward class if you do the work. Teacher is clear about what you need to know and goes over it repeatedly. Slacker will fail however. Easy to get an A if you hit the reveiw sheets hard. No Mercy if you don't.
It was so hard to learn from him. I didn't get the material at all. His stand-offish personality makes it intimidating to ask for help.
Had him for night class. Quiz every week based on homework, mid term, and final. Material is not the most interesting but if you just PAY ATTENTION and do the homework the class is an easy A. Curves class which is nice, easy grade if you pay attention and due homework.
great class on using math to gamble. I plan on going to Vegas a use card counting techniques and to beat the texas holdem games.
Took this class thinking it would be a fun class about gambling and gaming. It really wasn't till the latter half of the class. I am sort of bitter since I turned in all my homework asked him if there was anything I missed he said no and then when grades came out he said I was missing three assignments. Went from a A to a B. Alright teacher.
I liked professor Chin. your grade is made up of one week quizzes, midterm and final & he curves. I got A's on both with out the curve. Just listen and do the optional homework and you'll be set. He goes over the problems you dont understand in the beginning of class too! go to class & do homework and you'll get an A
I liked Prof Chin. He takes the time to explain and review any problems you ask. He passes out handouts with the problems worked out and review sheets for final and midterm. Quiz every class based on HW. Midterm and final-lets you use a formula sheet for final. Go to class, do hw and you'll do well.
Oh William, he's so lost in his own genius. unfortunatly for he, his expansive brainpower just doesn't translate into effective teaching. Although he had mastered the material, he did not really aid my mastery of anything other than naps. But he is actually quite humourous, and not because he wants to be.
Possibly the greatest math professor I have ever experienced. If you know basic algebra, you can do great in his class. He is extremely knowledgable, and his notes and lecture are all-encompassing. I didn't know any calculus prior to the class and with his help I got an A on every test. He also keeps the class fun with his sense of humor. Genius
Seems like a good teacher, until the final grade.Doesn't curve as promised, however, the quizzes and the midterm are fairly simple. The final is the one that you have to be careful for
Easy class, just need to know material from previous classes. Lots of students asking questions about material from algebra, not surprised they didn't do well. Know the material and do the optional homework - quiz and test problems are just like the in-class questions. Easy A.
very unclear and not helpful. if i ask a question he makes me feel like an idiot for not knowing. Definitely one of my least favorite teachers i've ever had
Honestly I've never had a worse teacher than his guy. He moves through the material way to fast and never explains. He expects you to understand what he is saying and never answers questions correctly or just makes you feel stupid for asking. I learned better by doing the homework then going to class. If you have him, I wish you the best of luck...
This has been a great class. All you need to do is sit in the front of the class, take the notes, and ask questions if you don't understand. The quizzes were easy and the midterm was strait forward. I have yet to take the final. Also Mr. Chin is hilarious. He is a classic geek and weirdly funny.
So unclear-speaks too fast and has too many thoughts going on in his head. He goes back and forth in what he says. Assignments for this class were hard because he does not clearly explain how to do the problems. He is not that hard of a grader. Lets you get out early
He is a super relaxed and funny guy. Its not difficult to get a good grade if you know how to learn from examples. He is easy going and doesn't care at all about attendance, I would recommend him if you're good at math and not stupid. Easy A
The actual class time is easy and fun because all you do is play card games, however the outside work can be a little difficult. Don't come in expecting it to be a joke, and you'll be fine.
Do everything you can to not take Stats with him! Boring and very very confusing. Not the best out there
He knows his material, makes a lot of smarty humor jokes that most classes are too brain dead to notice. He goes through everything well. Quizzes were all online as well as midterm/final. If ever have questions he always knows the answer. Not to mention he has written many papers on calculus.
Favorite professor thus far. If you are decent with logic problems and probability you will have no problem earning an A. If you are not very math oriented however he will not waste time catching you up. That being said he's one of the wittiest professors here and should be spending his time back in Vegas counting cards. Total Genius.
Awful teacher. Do not take him.
Worst math teacher I have had in my life. Very confusing and hard to follow him. Gives unclear answers-at best- when you do ask a question. The book and tutoring center saved me. Quizzes every week, mostly in MyLabsPlus but some in class. Final worth 36% and midterm 27% sucked. Jumped through hoops to barely earn a B. You could find better!
Chin is completely all over the place in his lecture. He just relies on mymathlab and that I ended up teaching the material myself. I wouldn't say he doesn't teach, but he doesn't know how to teach clearly. All of the quizzes, midterm, and final are online. But, you can find better.
I actually enjoyed this class and I hate math. The class I took was online once a week with homework, tests and quizzes online. The online system is great and it helps students solve things they didn't get. I didn't learn a lot in lectures but that's okay because I did okay. Good class for kids who don't like math
If you make an effort to understand the material you will understand it. The homework tells you how to work through each problem. I took calc in high school and didn't understand any of it, but Chin really made it easy and painless. He does a lot of goofy things too, so it isn't as boring as other glasses.
Chin's class is easy if you understand basic math. He is the best math teacher at DePaul and actually teaches his students. All of his weekly quizzes, midterm, and final are open note and online. He also teaches where you only meet once a week and the other part is taught online. If you have a problem with a quiz grade, email him and he'll fix it.
Great professor. Midterm is sooooooo easy, just memorize the review he gives you. Trust me, take him.
Professor Chin is not a bad professor. Class is easy even with no Pre-calc or Calculus experience. Most of my struggles in his class are due to not paying attention and falling asleep. The only things that matter are the midterm and final, which account for over 65% of your grade. You need to do the homework and you have a guaranteed A.
Prof. Chin is a great professor. He teaches you what you need to know in order to succeed in the class. Additionally, he gives ample opportunity for you to achieve 100% on the homework grade which is a major portion of your grade. Simply put the effort in (study a lot) and you will pass with an A.
He's nothing amazing but was nice and was an okay teacher. I liked that he went off of powerpoint because it made it easier to fallow along and stay organized.
The only grades were online homework, a midterm, and a final. He gave us practice problems that were identical to the actual exam for the midterm. The final was online and he didn't make us go into class to take it. Ridiculously easy class. My only complaint was that I had to work harder in MAT 136 because I didn't learn a ton through him.
Professor Chin is very smart and intelligent. He has an odd sense of humor, but it is funny nevertheless. As long as you show up and do what you need to do outside of class, it really is not bad.
HW and quizzes are really easy. Midterm and Final are online, but taken in class.
Not the best teacher but he does try to teach his students. Very odd sense of humor. His lectures are always unclear and is always all over the place. Materials on mymathlab and his own powerpoint does not match at all. I end up teaching myself. He tends to get taken advantage of specific students; favoritism I guess. I don't recommend him!!!!!!!!!
Professor's lectures usually do not make that much sense. Also, this class is a hybrid which I was unaware of so look into this before you enroll. MyMathLabs is the online software you use and it sucks and costs a fortune.
I had Professor Chin for both MAT135 and MAT136 and honestly his class was an easy A (and this is coming from someone who isnt normally an A student when it comes to math). Just know that its hybrid so you only have class once a week and the majority of the material is online. I learned some from this professor but learned most from mylabsplus.
If this class wasn't majorly online I'm not sure I would give such a kind review, but I feel I did well in this class. I had previous calculus experience, and learned/reviewed most from his posted videos and MyLabsPlus. He seems nervous when he teaches in person, even though I can tell he's very knowledgeable. highly recommend the hybrid class.
William Chin (or Billy as he is commonly referred to as) is a great professor, but he is kind of goofy. I remeber one day in MAT 135, the clocks were slighly off, and by slighly, I mean that they were an hour and ten minutes ahead. So twently minutes into class, everyone got up and left, thinking that class was up. Chin did nothing, except whimper.
Mr. Chin is honestly one of the most inspiring professors I had at DePaul. He gets paid to barely do anything because all of his assignments and exams are online. If you want an easier path to mathematical success, TAKE CHIN! I was a marketing major but Chin convinced me to switch to a calculus major with a minor in culinary arts. Highly recommend!
Professor Chin is really chill and I mean really chill. The class is hybrid, however there is no penalty for late homework and both the final and midterm are online taken in class, but it's like you're taking it at home. He curved the midterm as well. I recommend him if you are looking for an easy A, however you will probably not learn much.
All assignments including the homework, quizzes, midterm and final are all taken online. There were times where the class did not meet for up to two weeks. The SI meetings were much more valuable than the lectures. Chin seemed very unmotivated and lazy about the class. Buy a new textbook for the acces code to the website you will be using for hw.
Chin is a very good person, but not a good professor. Lectures were mediocre, I mostly used MLM for practice, the midterm was difficult and the final was ridiculously hard, study guides help somewhat, but expect surprises. Just do really well on HW and quizzes. Stay away if you're not good a math!
Where to begin! Chin should literally be a god. This guy is magical. When it comes to mathematical problems, there is nothing he cant solve! One day, I saw him at a car wash. I said Hello Professor Chin! He didnt recognize me. That was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life. He then agreed to help me out with the class at Starbucks.
Professor Chin honestly changed my life. He has taught me the ways of Calculus, where he used real world examples every day such as the Jackson street example. He has the mind of a ninja, where you never know his next move but he we will always surprise you in a good way. He likes to be called Professor Chinsta. Take him! Easy A! Online exam! Chin!
Very straight forward class. Mylabs assignments every week with a 5 question quiz too. One midterm/final that aren't proctured. Personally wasn't a fan of his lectures and never listened to them. If you're good at teaching yourself from a text book this is good class to take.
I hate this class. It is so beyond awful, and I honestly haven't learned a single thing in the past 5 weeks. He is so monotone it is literally impossible to listen to his lectures. He also just makes zero sense at all. I really discourage everyone to not take this class. Awful.
Bro don't take his gambling class, it seems like a fun class but it's not. If you read this, you're welcome.
Professor Chin should not be teaching this class or an online class for that matter. This class was extremely difficult due to the fact he did not clearly state what was expected of us. He was not clear what was needed to be done on our homework or when it was due. He barely answered any emails on time. Avoid this professor and class at all costs.
This class was the most difficult class I have taken so far at DePaul. The material itself is not the problem but more of the professor's teaching style. His lectures only explain the conceptual side of stats, not how to solve problems. I had use Youtube videos instead to teach me. Basically a self-taught class, would not recommend.
From reading the textbook, to watching his lectures, and then doing the HW, the class is pretty straight forward. If you're good at self teaching and math you'll do fine. I didn't talk to him outside of class and still got a good grade. Pay attention to the calculator functions and you'll be OK.
You have around 2 assignments due a week (about 2-3 hrs worth of hw). the answers are on chegg but with you different numbers. the midterm is 15-20 questions and the final is 20 questions. he responds to emails pretty fast.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! HE ADDED PROBLEMS ON THE FINAL THAT WERE NEVER COVERED HE DOES NOT RESPOND HE IS VERY DISMISSIVE AND IS PETTY WITH GRADES
I'm a returning student after 20 years to DePaul wrapping up an Accounting degree. I thought Professor Chin's video lectures coupled with the supporting videos were a bit heavy, but more than enough to get a good grade. I simply followed the instructions, banged out the homework (and not last minute) and got an A. I highly recommend Prof Chin!
Professors like Chin are the reason people hate math or lose their passion for it. His videos are no help as he drones on in what is virtually another language. The textbook is the only thing keeping me hopeful of a decent grade. I did not take him by choice, he was the only option. Stay away if you hope to understand what you're learning/love math
The class is pretty straightforward, the textbook is frustrating at times and vague when it comes to doing the assignments. Material is easy and doable as long as you take notes. Midterm and final were easy and short. Excel assignments were confusing but not impossible. Overall, easy class.
I took Professor Chin for LSP 112 Poker. It was a very easy class where he would give a lecture for the first half of class and you are able to play Poker or BlackJack the second half of class. It was very easy to get an A. However, I did not learn too much from the class it was very boring for the first half and he got lost in his words.
Took him for MAT 137 online and he's a chill guy the class consists of 2 excel assignments, pearson homework, midterm, and final he's very easy to get ahold of via email or zoom if you have questions I would recommend others to take him for MAT 137
Mostly self-taught class. The textbook and my own study efforts, including using unstuckstudy, were key to doing well. Lectures were hit or miss, but the material is manageable if you're willing to put in the work.
The professor used WebWork for homework and exams, and had strict deadlines, so it's best that you do the homework early. Lecture videos were sometimes confusing, but he can help with clarification if you send him an email. Very respectful towards his students. Try not to procrastinate on the assignments and study, and you'll be fine :^)
