Not bad
His tests are off the hook, class is interesting, he's an evolutionist
Tests are all about multiple choice trickery; never in his office
Just like the other talking boxes for the poor bio dept.
Audit this like 10 times before you take it, then maybe you won't blow it
If you fail Bio0160 maybe you should consider changing your major.
great teacher, tough exams tho, we'll definitely find out who studies
Some people didnt like him...i thought he was great. One of my favorite sci profs. Kinda dry, but extremely thorough and clear, you knew the tests were hard, but what do you expect??? Its collegiate science here people, not grade school
great teacher, tough exams but he curves a lot
Great teacher, exams go after a lot of detail though. You really have to read and understand the book to do well....lectures help a lot
one of the best, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Old, but a good guy and knows his stuff. Tests go into detail though. Make sure you read and come to lecture. He also types notes and posts them in Langley which are helpful.
he's one of the smartest teachers i know. you can tell how much he loves his job by how much he talks. i feel bad for falling asleep in every class. but i do like him.
He is very intelligent and an overall great teacher. You can learn so much by listening to him. If you are a serious Biology student, he will be invaluable. He is very hardcore (teaches during recitation) but you will feel great succeeding in his class
Knows his stuff but lectures can be confusing as he does not stay on one subject for a long period of time but flip/flops between things. Tests are difficult and look for knowledge of details. Never seems to give definitive answers to questions either.
Poor lectures, uses overheads to construct his lectures but provides no visual aid for students. Jumps from topic to topic and has a very annoying voice.
Ask questions, study his notes, and listen to what he says in class. He is one of the most qualified professors at the university and his experience is unbelievable. Great teacher.

Very inteligent; knows his stuff. Annoying monotone voice and lecture. Tests are crazy tough. If you are hard core bio, go for it... otherwise... uh oh.
Notes have everything on the test... not in notes, not on test! He does use figures from the book on the overhead, the person who said there were no visual aids was wrong.
A litle pompus, but he's fair and his tests are straight from the notes so there are no surprises.
Pretty easy. Lectures can get pretty boring when he just reads from his slides, but atleast he only tests on the notes.
very knowledgable- can tell you almost anything about biology! ask him questions. if you're tired in class you might fall asleep cuz its all just notes, but if you listen to him talk you will definitely understand it. tests aren't bad once you adjust to his style.
He knows a lot about Biology. He' very helpful when you have a question. But his lectures are boring and there's lots of note taking. His exams are on the notes, but they're still hard.
Prof Coffman is a really good teacher. His tests can be tricky and lectures are nothing but note taking, but there are probably few Bio teachers at Pitt that know more than this guy. Take Coffman's class if you want to leave the class understanding Biology.
Lecture is tough to get through without being distracted, it gets pretty boring. But if you take notes and have copies of old tests, his exams are easier than any other bio prof's exams.
He is one of the better bio professors I have had. To do well in his class study hard and make sure you really know the material.
Phenomenal course, but not offerred often. The textbook was great and Coffman gave excellent examples and really organized and outlined notes. The exams were extremely fair and quizes helped boost up everyone's grade

Very smart guy, very interesting. Helpful, funny, good teacher. Tests are difficult but fair. You can pull of an A if your studying is thorough.
one of the best professors i've had, regardless of subject. speaks the language of biology so fluently and flawlessly that you can't help but come away with a great understanding of the topics at hand. study his notes and the assigned readings and you'll do beautifully!
I feel that he was completely unhelpful when I asked him quesitons because he simply repeated whatever he had just said rather than trying to rephrase his answer. Plus, a lot of the time, there were things on the test that I never heard in class, read in his notes, or read in the book.
most enjoyable science course I had because of how easy it is to listen to him talk. he's a perfect bio orator.
Going to classes is a waste of time. Doesn't like questions. Very boring. His tests are very tricky. You can read the book come to class take all the notes in the world and still get a bunch of wrongs on the test! Don't worrry. Ihad worse teachers! :D, but this one isn't particullary pro learning. Mostly interested in covering notes than teaching.
Not a good teacher... simply reiterates what his notes say and uses recitation as another lecture to cram in the material. Tests are near impossible with extremely detailed questions; might as well not be multiple choice with the kinds of choices he gives. Condesencded students in class when they asked questions. Uses neg. curve if avg > 75%.

this professor makes you memorize very large quantities of information, in detail. if you are good at memorizing 6 or more chapters at a time then you will do well if not you will do poorly. his exams are hard cause he doesnt repeat questions from one to the next and tries to trick you with the wording of his questions.
Prof. Coffman is ridiculous. His exams are multiple choice however the questions are a full paragraph and each answer is a mini-paragraph in itself. Not a practical test in my mind. There were some questions on the exam that were never covered. Even though it was hard i feel i could have learned more form another prof.
Boring lectures, half the class fell asleep..He knows the material but doesn't effectively teach it. Ridiculously wordy exam questions. He definitely writes them to trick you. Although hard, not impossible, I got a B-, but I already knew half the material from high school...
yes everyone falls asleep in this class... funny story-- one day i fell asleep in the middle of class as he was talking about plants and when i woke up 10 minutes later he was talking about aliens from mars...
Tests are virtually impossible. You may thin you know the information because he does teach it well, but his tests are very confusing.
He's a knows his stuff, and the tests are hard, yes, but if I could go from a D/F in bio I to an A in bio 2 that should tell you something...
He's a good teacher but his exams are difficult. You have to know every single detail from his notes. You don't really have to read the book. He also can be very boring when lecturing. He tries to make jokes once in awhile but there not that funny. He's a nice guy though and will try to help you if you have a question.
The notes arent very clear.
This guy is a total snoor, but it is a foundations of bio course. I found newman more entertaining. Least favorite thing about the class is that he tries to trip you up on wording on his exams. Im a good student, and I usually got A-/B's on his exams. Id recommend staying up to date on readings and getting a hold of old exams to get an A. Not bad.
He could be a good teacher. He knows what he is talking about but unless you get on his good side he doesn't like to help you during office hours. His class is really boring and he makes really dry jokes that he find extremely amusing. He's not a totally bad guy. He does enjoy what he teaches. He's obsessed with one of the summer research programs.
good prof. has a really funny old man voice that i find pretty endearing (say dinosaaar like in jurassic park, etc.), keeps me awake in lecture. tests are hard but if you go to lecture, read the book and not freak out at test time you should be fine. know details! if he points something out, write it down!
His tests are absolutely impossible. He wants everyone to fail.
Very funny old man. Is very approachable and can answer all questions. Also good at explaining confusing concepts. Notes give good summary of concepts with some descriptions but exams are difficult and focus on little details. Paying attention and reading chapters is highyl recommended
Teaching? What teaching? Just lecture from the book, or should I say, a really bad outline that revolves around the book. Extremely boring. I wouldn't mind the toughness of his tests if he actually taught the students so they understood the concepts being presented. Ugh.
Do not listen to anyone who says Coffman is impossible, too hard, unclear, etc. He is tough, but fair. I got a C in bio 1 with someone else, and then an A in bio 2 with coffman. you just have to study hard... like any other class in college.
So it wasn't the easiest class in the world, but all you had to do was memorize the lecture notes and you were golden. Coffman cracked me up all semester. He would be such a cool dude to have as a grandpa. Plus I should have had a B in that class, and somehow I pulled out an A-.
Very difficult exams, almost impossible. Makes you memorize tons of details. Not only memorize, but tricks you with the details on exams. Curves your grade down if average is above a 75%. Doesn't drop a low exam grade. Very hard to get decent grades in his class. If you are worried about your GPA, do not take this professor.
I personaly liked this guy until I got my test back and talked to him about it. He is a word game jerk. If you like being kicked around and smarted off to take his class. You will not be disappointed.
Could not stand this professor- one of the worst I've ever had. Exam questions are extremely long and he tries to trick you a lot with his wording. Doesn't really test how well you know the material, just whether or not you can figure out what he worded to be wrong. Also, one of the only profs I've ever had that used recitation as another lecture!
Great Prof, chuckles like a cute old man! For an A, Simply memorize his notes that he gives you and you will get 90+ on his midterms and final. By memorize, this means EVERY detail though!
Cute old man, though the class is pretty boring at times. Tests are pretty difficult but not impossible. You must know your notes in and out. Study the practice exams heavily and attend the peer leading sessions and you should be fine.
Lectures were boring.. Tests aren't impossible but they are very difficult - requires memory of his wordy notes rather than understanding concepts. Worries more about covering the material than if students understand it. I was very disappointed when there was no evaluation for him because I think he could definitely improve. Knows his stuff though.
Must memorize all his notes and learn his wording. Do that and you will get at least a B in his class, book is pretty much useless, not very approachable.
Tests are straight from the notes, but he tends to try to trick you with his wording. Pretty interesting class and he seems to know everything about biology. Definitely consider taking; an A is very managable if you study a lot a few days before an exam.
Lot's of people say his lectures are boring and that his exams are terribly hard. I really enjoyed his lectures but I do agree that his exams are hard, only because the questions force you to think about the info. He looks things up online for current status and is obviously devoted to biology. I enjoyed his class.
I loved Dr. Coffman's class.. if you are a good memorizer, you'll do fine in his class. He tests straight out of his notes so there is no need to read too into the book. Just memorize his notes because his exams are word for word out of them. He is a good lecturer and keeps class interesting. Highly recommended!
Very hard to understand, tests format (questions) is hard to follow, but if you study hard, you can get a B or A.
very intelligent and devoted to his work but is a horrible teacher. very confusing notes and it is impossible to listen to him lecture when you have to copy pages of notes every class. tests are very hard and wordy. purposely attempts to trick students
Don't listen to anyone here. He is more straight forward than most professors I've had. To do well on tests study the notes in and out, use the book to go over things you don't understand and you're gold. Tests are tricky but if you studied well, you should be good. He really knows his stuff. Only complaint are recitations being used to lecture.
Absolutely terrible. His exams may be 100% based off of his notes but even if you memorize his note the questions are still rediculous. It is baffling why he will make his exams so much more of a self-confidence test than an actual knowledge test. DO NOT TAKE COFFMAN IF YOU WANT AN A .... take Bledsoe he's a lot better
Exam questions are taken straight from notes, which are crystal clear. Don't buy the textbook-- you'll never use it. However, his exams are lengthy, wordy and very tricky!!! Recitation is used as another lecture. Dr. Coffman is extremely intelligent, however, his lecture can be very dry and uninteresting.
MEMORIZE YOUR NOTES! Its the only thing that will work for the tests. The tests are very trickyyy and reading the book is a waste of time!
STAY AWAY IF POSSIBLE!!! his tests are nearly impossible. tests are based off of in class notes and the majority of questions are in the format: which of the following is correct a, b, c, a&b, b&c.. and his answers arent clear... very boring prof
Worst teacher I've ever had. Tests are ridiculous and he won't let you challenge questions, even if they're BS. He also tells you to not ask questions during the test. He is conceited and disrespectful to the student.
I am glad I took Dr. Coffman. I respect him the most of any professor I have taken. His course is very tough but you will learn much. His tests are very tough but straight from the notes. No need to read the book, unless you need more explanation. He may be the best of the Biosc 0160 teachers as the course is hard by nature. Has Funny Laugh
Dr. Coffman's way of teaching is very old fashioned. You have to go to lecture to take the pages and pages of notes he drones through. He uses recitation as another lecture, so you really don't have many opportunities to ask questions. His test questions are long and sometimes there isn't enough time to finish the tests. Not very approachable.
I loved Dr. Coffman. He was really old school, but he is really passionate about Biology and knows so much about the subject. He definitely answers question even though he uses recitation as another lecture. Its inspiring to have a professor who truly loves teaching their subject.
Ugh, terrible class. Subject matter was more interesting than Bio150, but Coffman makes it all seem amazingly boring. His notes are verbose and confusing, and his tests are even worse. He's also probably 107 years old. In all seriousness, don't take him if not absolutely necessary. I learned a lot, but my knowledge was not reflected in my grade, B-
DO NOT! I studied for HOURS and HOURS and HOOUURRRSS and got a D. His tests are impossible with choice (d) being "a & c" & choice (e) being "a, b, and c" on half the questions on the test.. just do yourself a favor and avoid him
He goes way too fast, doesnt use recitation for "reciting" the material, and talks about other things while the notes are on the overhead. Tests are confusing. Not one of my favorite professors.
I was hesitant to take his class after reading some of these comments, however after taking him I have to disagree. If you attend class, take notes, and study a few days before, you will be fine. I enjoyed his lectures and thought that his exams were fair. He used some tricky wording, but if you studied his notes then you knew what to look for.
Two words, AW-FUL. His lectures are very dry and boring. His tests are very tricky, hard, and worded extremely poorly and always thinks he's right. You can't ask questions about poorly worded questions during test. He is very unapproachable. Just a terrible teacher. Thanks to him, I'm probably not getting into med school. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
I just had to post again so people aren't misled by everyone that got < than an A. The tests are STRAIGHT out of the notes. Yes for his tests you actually have to think. Its not just memorize and throw it up on the test. Read the book, understand it, study the notes and you're gold. All the people complaining here obviously did not do that.
Depends on who you are. His tests are derived straight from the notes, but they are insanely tricky. If you're the right kind of test taker, going to class, and really learning the notes will suffice. If you're not (like me) then be prepared to suffer. I don't even know how to get a good grade in his class.
Dr. Coffman is really passionate and really knowledgeable about biology. He tests straight from the notes so you never really have to read the book. He also tells some funny stories in lecture to keep interest. Overall, explicity clear and made lectures easy to follow.
Don't take this teacher unless you want to commit suicide. He is hands down the worst teacher i ever took at Pitt. Unless you can remember everyword that every came out of his mouth ever you have no chance of passing DO NOT TAKE HIM EVER!!!!!
Memorize the notes he gives you and understand them. Although the tests are extremely tricky and difficult, they are right from the (rather extensive) notes. And read the tests CAREFULLY!! They are often worded badly and, for that reason, are tough. Professor is a smart guy though.
He was boring as ever.. Exams were difficult.. Not the worst class ever, but certainly not anywhere near enjoyable.
This is the worst professor I have ever had at Pitt. He is very unapproachable. This is the first class I have ever had where reading the book was more interesting than the lecture. Also, he loves to ask random questions about the life and times of charles darwin. It has nothing science. Avoid if possible and you will save your GPA.
I completely agree with the person that said s/he earned an A- in the class but lost his/her sanity in the process. Coffman is very old-fashioned. But he is very knowledgeable and is helpful in office hours. However your hair will become white while trying to earn an A in the class but you'll learn a lot in the process.
Hard professor. Tests are completely from his notes so memorize them. Record the lectures if you have to and study study study. He's also very old-fashioned as far as his lecture. I felt like he talked at us instead of taught us. Oh and the recitation is an additional lecture. He takes a few questions and picks up where he left off in class.
Professor Coffman is a difficult professor. His tests are very tricky and his voice becomes annoying after a while. The final curve was the only reason I passed the class. He knows biology very well. It is possible to get an A in his class, you just have to study and never do anything else.
All his tests are from the notes, however, his tests are very difficult. Most of them are the "which of the following is true or false" questions. Also, he likes to use letters D or E as answers A and C or B and C options. His recitations are just another lecture and he was always available when I needed help. Prepare to work very hard and study.
This man is in love with Biology, if you have even a reasonable level of interest in Bio, you can find something to enjoy. His class isn't incredibly easy, but its doable, the majority of the exams are the notes, so coming to class is important, and he lectures in recitation as well. Ultimately, be ready to work, but you are guaranteed to learn.
Very hard multiple choice exams. His lectures do not really follow the textbook, so you can't miss lectures. He is a pretty boring speaker and does not use any technology or the internet. He uses an overhead projector.
His tests are impossibly specific with the "A, B, C, A and B, or all the above" format, you could probably do well if you had a photographic memory. If you actually study 6 hrs a week maybe you could get an A. There was about a 5% curve by the end, but some semesters theres none. Doesn't use technology or the book and he's kinda full of himself.
Tests are STRAIGHT from notes. Study the notes repetitively and you're guaranteed a solid grade. Coffman is an incredibly intelligent man and invokes some thought. If your good at memorizing pages upon pages of notes, take coffman
I would not take this man unless you have photographic memory and an attention span much longer than the normal human. He talks constantly and decides to go online and find newer info than available in the book. HE also isn't very clear on which you have to know. I used the book to study for the first test and was screwed because of that.
All BIO2 classes are challenging, but Coffman is very straightforward with what he wants, memorize his notes verbatim(and yes everything and verbatim) and you will be able to see through his many tricks he tries pulling. Helpful in office hours, class usually has about 5% curve and gives a few pts back due to bad test questions. Not bad at all.
Unconventional in that success is based on rote memorization of his notes verbatim(and yes only notes and yes verbatim) while lots of people will complain about his class, its easy compared to classes you take later on where what ur expected to know is unpredictable and ur challenged to think/apply vague concepts. Needs work but is straight forward
I've since graduated Pitt but I took this professor 2-3 years ago for Bio II. I just wanted to say that if you're pre-med, pre-pharm, whatever...you won't succeed by taking to heart what everyone else is saying. Just worry about yourself, trust yourself, work hard, and you will do great. This guy's tests were as straight forward as you could get.
Don't bother reading the book. It will waste your time. I found his questions overly particular and confusing. Though I found him an fairly interesting lecturer because he loved what he taught, I would not recommend him.
He knows the material so well he seems unable to explain it and instead just rambles on about the subject. His tests are confusing word games rather than measures of knowledge or understanding.
Tests are essentially a measure of how well you can memorize the notes he gives. He does not use the book at all so you need to attend lecture to get the notes or else you fall behind very quickly. He uses recitation to lecture more, so you have to plan on going to those, as well. The tests are very doable if you can memorize what he says.
His is teaching style is very old school.Lecture consists of copying his notes off a transparency while he rambles on.Tests are difficult and he loves to use all the above/none of the above as answers.Overall not a bad teacher,he is very passionate about biology and seemed fair in grading, gave class 4 points at end for weirdly phrased questions
Class is all about rote memorization of his notes. That's all it is. Only look at his notes and memorize them word for word. It takes time but don't waste time on anything else for him. I wish I knew this right off the bat instead of only by week 10. Don't read the book just his notes. You'll wish your future classes were this straightforward.
