VERY HARD class, a lot of work, but he has in depth knowledge, subject matter is interesting for the most part...but very very hard
very nice guy. kind of hard. will help out. lectures are all over the place. get a good study group and if you are not sure about something ask him
He makes history which I find boring interesting. His tests cover a lot of material, but if you go to the class and participate in the discussions and read most of his assignments its not too bad. He is VERY nice and EXTREMELY helpful
Tough class. Discussion can cover a wide range of topics. Testing is straight off of study guide, but difficult if you've missed classes. Very fair paper grader, very consciencious in making editing corrections
A very intelligent professor who helps his student fully understand the subject matter... He made the class interesting despite the boring subject matter... By showing films and not just lecture everyday can make the class enjoyable
A great teacher will challenge you with hard work, but make it seem easy by teaching so well. Thant's what Cumiford does. And Slick Willy always dresses sharp; he's an awesome guy.
extremely difficult class, extremely boring professor. reads straight off his notes & has no personality when "teaching." the term monotonous sums it up perfectly.
TELLS FUNNY STORIES IN CLASS
Nice man - cool hats. Lectures are extremely hard to follow (no pattern or chronology) but tests are graded leniently and class discussions are interesting. Consider outside texts to more clearly explain concepts, and focus on study guides.
Interesting teacher, very clear, somewehat nitpicky when it comes to grading. Take his class but prepare to be thorough.
Very interesting lectures. Very funny and extremely helpful. Love his history tangents. Grades easy on tests and is great with inclusive discusions.
He is my favorite teacher. A very nice man who holds very interesting discussions. Take at least one class from him.
You have to be motivated to study, but he is still a very good teacher. Watch out for his geography quiz. He always lets you know what his tests will be on though. Very helpful.
He gives the worst notes ever, they are all over the place and don't help with the test at all. His descriptions of the assignments are pretty loose. He is a real nice guy though. He seems to want you to pass the class.
He's an interesting fellow. He's very nice and has a genuine interest in what he teaches. His test aren't hard if you have kept up with all the readings. He's a little unclear about what he wants for the papers, but he doesn't grade them very hard.
I have taken many classes from this professor and have found him to be both informative, and fun. He has been incredibly helpful and upfront about his expectations. The classes were always well organized and lectures were filled with humerous anicdotes.
His classes are always very enjoyable and I learn some really neat stuff. Be prepared to put some effort into his class though, but it's well worth the effort. He's hot if you like bald men who dress really snazzy.
cumiford is one of those exceptional teachers who is so in love with his subject that you can't help but be too. get ready for dry, witty humour and a deluge of information - this guy knows his stuff and presents it in a genuinly entertaining way.
Most of the stuff here is right on. Cumiford is a great professor and a slick dresser to boot. He's well-read, knows his stuff, and has this dry humor...He's genuine, not too-tough a grader, but teaches you a lot of good stuff. Thus:Interesting class.
He is the most AWESOME history teacher that I have EVER had. I have always had a love of history, but he is just such a wonderful teacher and makes me love it even more. He is funny and witty. Cool dude.
Cumiford is really funny and he really tries to help out freshman. Prepare for reading and essay tests. Requires a lot of detail on his tests. Great class discussions make it worthwhile to take.
One of my favorite profs and classes! He is great. Tests are hard but he does grade fairly and he is a great teacher to go and ask outside help for. He isn't even my advisor but he has helped me with school and outside school related issues. Take him if you can. You get more out of it then you think
I've had the dude for several history classes...and I seriously come out of every class knowing a TON about not only the subject of the class, but about a TON of other things as well. This man is so cool and dedicated that it will blow your mind. He is a must take at Chapman!!
I hate history! If you need to fill your GE take this class, History and Film. All you do in class is watch movies. Buying the books are a waste of money, and don't spend too much time reading all the packets he hands out becuase you can still get a good grade with out wasting your time.
Cummiford is Irish- he asks on the first day. He moves rather fast but he is also pretty easy going. His grading is very light. I would recomend his class.
His classes are strictly lecture. This class requires interest in the subject matter. He doesn't use any kind of visual aids other than movies.
His lectures are very informative, but his lectures can drag on sometimes, and he sometimes rambles. you really need to be interested in the subject in order to take this class. nice guy, but needs to seem a little more interested in what he's teaching
very nice teacher, test are based on essays and short answers. You need to take good notes because that is all his tests are based on. Overall it can be difficult to keep up with the note taking but a good teacher and very passionate about what he teaches
Awesome professor. He seriously cares about each and every one of his students and it shows in and out of the class. I highly recommend you take one of Cumiford's classes. He is a great teacher. He grades pretty easy most of the time, but contrary to common belief he does give out C's.
Cumiford is my advisor and he is the best teacher at Chapman!
Cumiford is exceedingly inteligent and animated. He is also very funny, which is always a bonus. Dont bother buying the books (his tests are derrived almost entirely from lectures). He is very willing to meet and help students. He doesn't really take attendance, but he will be able to tell who is actually trying and who is sliding by.
Great professor; great, caring, fun person
I was very impressed, especially given the subject. Cumiford made every lecture interesting; he just has a great sense of history and puts everything in its historical context. He's also very funny, which is a big plus. The class is challenging, but not hard. 3 essay exams (including the final), one 5 page book review, and a 3 page film review.
I've taken Cumiford several times in my years at Chapman and he's by far my favorite professor ever! You will have to work hard in his classes, but you get SO much out of the class at the end. He's a GREAT guy who cares so much about students and has an awesome sense of humor. Just show up and take decent notes and you should be just fine.
If you are looking for an intense, hard, lower division general ed world cultures class, this is the class to be in. Everything is spoken from the top of his head and he speaks very fast and doesnt repeat information, so be prepared to write as fast as you can. Anything but an easy A.
William Cumiford is one of Chapman's most intelligent and interesting professors.
This is my fourth class, and i have to say that he is an excellent professor. he is very articulate, and really knows his subjects. Latin American History is kinda hard, but his other classes were very manageable. highly recommended.
He's a great teacher and not that hard. He gives you tests where you can choose what essay to do and what short answer questions you want to answer, and he gives you review sheets before each test with all the terms you will need to know. I learned a lot in his class.
Great professor, he is so interesting and funny! Tests are like any other history course: bring a large blue book, write one long essay and 10-15 identifications. Study guide is given early so you can keep track of what to really pay attention to in class. The videos were also interesting. He strives to engage his students into the material.
Dr. cumiford will challenge you to be your best. cares about his students. Great lectures, assignments, study guides and exams. Knows you! You will learn! He will prepare you for your educational future. One of most influential individuals in my life!!! ;-)
One of the best teachers I've ever had. The tests are long, hard and involved, but it's a small price to pay to study at the foot of a master. His lectures are like listening to an ancient Shaman, telling stories around the fire. The hour will go before you know it. If you have any choice at all, TAKE HIS CLASS!!
Cumiford is absolutely amazing. If you have a chance to take his class, carpe diem! He's extremely intelligent and goes off on the most random but somehow relevant historical tangents that you learn so much from. If he asks your opinion, give it, he takes it open mindedly. Great professor and person! two thumbs up!!
Professor Cumiford is a cool guy. Just go to class and take notes on what he says. Reading the book didn't help me.
Cumiford is an awesome professor! Seriously if you have a chance, take one of his classes!! His tests may kick your butt, but you actually learn something! And I mean isn't that what you came to college for??
Professor Cumiford is a great professor. His lectures are interesting and he tells jokes and funny stories as well. All tests are essay so you have to know the material pretty well.
Fantastic teacher! One of the best professors I have had at Chapman! His classes are engaging and thought provocing! There is a lot of requred reading but the reading is always interesting. Defintley take a class with him!!!You will learn so much!
The most amazing and fashionable teacher I've ever met. My hero.
If you have any interest in history, you need to take at least one class with Cumiford before you graduate. He has the memory of an elephant and the eyes of a hawk - he knows all of his students by name, and he never forgets a face. The tests are challenging, but if you take the time to study, you'll be fine. When in doubt, choose Cumiford. ALWAYS!
Professor Cumiford is amazing. He is definitely one of the best professors at Chapman. His lectures are engaging, he tells funny stories/jokes, and he somehow manages to make ancient history relevant to the modern day. He is also the fastest grader on campus, and will have your test/paper returned to you graded (with comments) by the next class.
Cumiford is a great professor. I reccomend him. He wears nice suits that match. Enough said.
Maybe the best professor I've ever had at Chapman...you will work hard for your grade, but you will be amazed at how much you've learned by the end of the semester. Definitely take even if you're not a history major!
Very nice guy. Really seems to care about his students. I personally found his lectures a bit old fashioned and dull but still worth taking if you have an interest in the subject. Pretty tough exams in that there are a crazy amount of terms to learn but a nice guy and he is definitely passionate about what he does.
Professor Cumiford is as good as it gets among university professors. Completely hilarious and engaging. Expect to be called on in class, but not ridiculed if you're wrong. Lots of reading assigned, but most of it you can skip if you pay attention and take notes. None of his assignments or exams were bad either. LOVE this guy.
Great teacher- always willing to help. Very knowledgeable, not to mention fashionable. I really enjoyed his class and definitely recommend taking him!
Great Professor! He is one of the best on campus along with Estes. Super fast grader and beyond helpful at office hours!
I've taken many classes with Cumiford and he is by far my favorite professor at Chapman. Every lecture is like story time from the wise man. Keeps things interesting and is pretty funny. Textbooks not necessary but he definitely learns peoples names by the third week so he knows whether or not you're there.
Prof Cumiford is a very knowledgeable and helpful instructor. Class was heavily dependent on attendance as we watched a film almost each class meeting (once a week) and also listened to lectures. He chooses some classic movies that make you consider the material and the relationship of history and film. Take for the History and Media minor degree!!
all lectures, but he makes it interesting. he is very knowledgable and loves history. one essay, three tests. tests require a lot of studying but overall a very manageable class.
I took his Tech and Media class during Winter Interterm. There were a lot of assigned readings, but other than that, the class was pretty manageable. His lectures were fun and interactive. The midterm and final were both blue book and there were two papers. One was 3-4 pages and the other was 6 pages.
Cumiford is the truth. Best professor I've had at Chapman.
This class reminded be a lot of a history course, but Dr. Cumiford made it much more enjoyable. He makes a lot of jokes and asks students their opinion. He is sweet, understanding, and will help you with any paper or assignment. The reading isn't excessive and the assignments are totally doable, but it does require work. Overall, he was awesome!
One of the best professors I've had at Chapman. He goes quickly and expects a lot from his students, but his class was really interesting. There are a lot of readings, and he expects you to be able to recall names and information from them for exams off the top of your head. We watched a movie every day, good movies too. He's awesome. Take him.
Professor Cumiford is an excellent professor. his tests are rather difficult and the entire class weighs on three tests and one paper. His class is based entirely off lecture, but the book is helpful. He knows positively everything and makes the lectures interesting with stories and funny facts. It's challenging, but I would highly recommend it
Professor Cumiford teaches the way he dresses - with style. He is by far one of my favorite professors here and he had a way of making History interesting. Pay serious attention to his lectures and you'll learn a lot.
Cumiford may be the best professor I have ever had! He is helpful, gives very interesting lectures, tells jokes, and is all around a very likeable intelligent man. As long as you show up to the lectures, you'll be perfectly fine. Though, put some more effort into the book report than I did, I ended up with an 80%.
Prof Cumiford is super funny, really witty, and knows his stuff. He does nothing but lecture but that's his style. Two midterms, a final, and a book review- wasn't really clear on his expectations for the book review thought. Gives solid feedback on tests but if you need help you have to seek him out! Tough class, rarely read but lots of review.
He's one of my favorite teachers at Chapman! Super cool person in and out of class, but boy will you work for your grade! You ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO buy the text books for the class!!! They're cheap so that helps, but the way classes are structured it's discussion based off class discussion of the reading and he'll call you out for not reading.
Cumiford lectures about the kings and military campaigns of Europe.. aka the kind of history our parents fell asleep to when they were in school. if you're a history major and want to conduct research, avoid Cumiford. If you need a GE and are fine with cramming before the two midterms and a final, it's your kind of class.
Teaches everything that is on the test. If you did not get a good grade its probably because you are lazy. He is very interesting if you listen and avoid Facebook. His lectures are crucial to his class. If you take VERY good notes, you would be fine without the book. He is clear, concise and knowledgable. Im a biochem major & doing great.
I love Cumiford, he's a great professor. I'm not a history major but I took this class for a GE and it was one of my favorite classes at Chapman so far. His tests can be kind of hard but you know exactly what to expect for them. Also he lectures without a PowerPoint or anything so taking notes and using the textbook are essential to doing well.
Not a history major. His lectures are very hard to understand. He is very passionate about what he teaches but does not seem to understand that not everyone has the same background knowledge. In class essay midterms/final. must include great detail or will not pass. he never gives above an A-... funny guy! lots of style, but very intimidating.
He is a funny guy but his lectures are a bit disprganiEd and can be difficult to follow at times. Take advantage of his office hours to discuss the papers. You will never have a test simply essays :)
We can all agree that he is funny/interesting but the expectations for the tests are utterly ridiculous. The "review sheet" that is supposed to help for tests is useless. Don't take this class for a GE based on the amount of reading, note taking, studying, etc. that is required. Lectures are extremely hard to follow - NO PPT!
Great professor and really funny. A few papers here and there, nothing too difficult.
I took his 'Greek and Roman Influence' class and was blown away with the kind of depth with which he introduces the topic to you. His lectures are conversational (He never dismisses anyone's opinion). He loves his material and is Incredibly well versed with each of his topics.
One of the best professors I have ever had. He doesn't give any busy work and always gives thorough feedback and is willing to answer any questions you may have. He loves students who are passionate about the content and have a genuine curiosity.
This class is a good 100-level to take for a GE, if you're ready to pay attention. His lectures don't really cover the same material as the books, so you don't need to read. Just be attentive in class, b/c the only way to know the test material is to listen & and take in-depth notes. He's a hard grader, so that's the only way to get a good grade.
He has a passion for what he teaches. The readings and his lectures pair well together. I am leaving his classes as an improved student, and overall Professor Cumiford is a cool teacher!
Clearly knowledgable and passionate about the material, but has high expectations of students regardless of major and background. Can be demeaning during discussions and will interrupt you frequently. Acts like he's going to be a harsh grader, but isn't really.
This was my second class with Cumiford, but once you know his class structure it's always the same. Your grade is based off 3 tests: Test 1, Midterm, and Final, as well as a paper. In this class, we had 3 papers, all short. He grades more off overall performance rather than percentages- come to class, participate, and your grade will show it.
He is really passionate about the subject matter, but all he does for the full class is sit in the front of the room and lecture. No powerpoints. No slides. No writing on the board. Just talks and you have to take notes. It can be kind of difficult to take notes from what he is speaking about since there doesn't seem to be a clear outline.
Cumiford is one of my favorite professors. You have 5 essays that are due throughout the semester, and they are short, easy papers (longest is 5 pages). He gives you good feedback on your papers but have someone go through your paper for errors before you turn it in. No tests or quizzes (essay final). I highly recommend him as a professor.
No powerpoints or lectures. He talks to the class about readings and asks questions. He calls on just about everyone, but he doesn't necessarily care if you know the answer, he just wants to know you're paying attention. Easy grader on essays and he gives study guides for his tests which are pretty straight forward. Class was boring but easy
Fast grader, very accommodating, and a true gem. He gives you a study guide outline for each unit and his lectures are based off that and the readings. No power point, just him talking-but he is very knowledgeable and notices when you are trying. Loves it when people participate.
Took two of his history classes in the same semester and felt pretty challenged. His classes are content HEAVY but if you put in the effort, you'll reap the rewards. Very charismatic, knowledgable and helpful professor!! He will literally help you in any way he can which is what I really loved about his classes. He's overall a great guy
Lectures for all but 3-4 classes where you watch a movie. Study guides have about 200 possible terms, you get tested on 6. Pretty difficult, nice guy but didnt like the way class was ran.
Knowledgeable and passionate professor who teaches the material pretty well. He's a cool guy, but be aware that his teaching style is very old-school: no slides, almost no Canvas, he lectures from his notes every class, etc. The 3 exams are all free-response using a green book but he provides good study guides for each. Overall, he was great.
It is clear that Prof Cumiford is knowledgeable but it can be unclear which parts of his lectures are random tangents or note-worthy. I didn't learn much from this course but the essays were interesting and the final presentations were informational.
One of, if not the best HIST professors at Chapman. Definition of a class act and a true scholar.
Dr. Cumiford is a very old-school teacher, only lecturing and assigning a decent amount of reading. His expectations are very high, and he is very very strict in grading - even in grammatical issues on your essays. He is fairly nice and helpful outside of class, but do be cautious of his high expectations for the depth of your knowledge.
His discussion style made class time more interactive, which made participation/attendance VERY important yet easy. We had one group project and a few papers, which were fairly open-ended and fun to do research for. You do have to ask him for your grade as he doesn't put grades into Canvas. He is very willing to help current and past students.
There are only a few essays and Prof. Cumiford grades them harshly. He has a good sense of humor and a laid-back attitude as long as you keep coming to class and do the work. My class's final (Spring 2024) was online and open book / note. If you miss the class that week, you really do have to watch the movie outside of class. It'll come up again.
you just watch movies & there are 3 papers (1 3pg, 2 6pg). 2 of the papers make you watch 3 movies total outside of class (which is dumb). he grades harshly, editing grammar/writing style more than the actual paper (on which he barely gives a prompt). There's a final paper that ends up being 6-7pgs. Not a hard class but I wasn't super fond of him
If you're a visual learner, this class is not for you. Dr. Cumiford's classes are purely lecture based except for one film. You are graded on very few things and he is a pretty harsh grader. While he is nice enough, he does not try to make class more interesting and it can be difficult to stay engaged without any visual aid.
He is old school. He does not use Canvas much. His lectures are complex, although he provides notes. Most of the grade is comprised of tests, which are comprised of a few free response questions and an essay question.
HON 280, just a general discussion for all his classes, will say he cold calls on people.
Professor Cumiford's lectures are engaging and interactive. While attendance is crucial, the assignments are manageable. Unstuck study proved helpful for study prep along with the free textbook.
He is a bit old school and requires proper language when writing (which is good for bettering your writing skills). The movies were pretty interesting and gave a more dramatic view of the historical events. The final is an essay and there are a few class discussions about the movies (participate!!). Definitely take him if you want improvement.
Class discussions were based on assigned readings found in canvas, so pay attention to what other people are saying and what the reading was about. Very fun professor who wasn't afraid to let a conversation change topics.
