not bad for a 400-level
LAZY!!!!!!
One of the best professors i ever had at the department of economics. Very clever and very helpful.
He misleaded everybody in the final exam, fall 2004. He is not a fair person.
The most boring lecture I ever attend. Maybe he is a great researcher, but terrible teacher. He hates teaching, do not help, and totally UNFAIR.
he sucks
I agree
Good prof. Organized teaching style, test and paper expectations were reasonable. Don't bother buying the textbook - it may be mildly interesting but didn't use it once for his course - go by his notes instead. Course was dry at certain points but overall was interesting.
Was a decent prof. He gave us very helpful review questions for the quizzes. He didn't tell us exactly what he wanted on the term paper until the last week of classes which wasn't good. The final was extremely difficult and he didn't provide much help or give clues as to what we should have studied for it. He wasn't bad, but he wasn't great either.
He marked the final incredibly hard which is a bit unfair considering how easy the quizzes were marked. The methods for grading were unfair but he is incredibly unhelpful in terms of going over marked exams and papers with a student. He also will give no reason for refusing to sit down and go over marking with the student.
I thought he was awesome! This course was a joke! He posts review questions which turn out to be the EXACT test. Its amazing! I know some ppl said he wouldnt help, but he went over my paper with me after just one email! So I enjoed this class, and Id definetly take one of his again! P.s. No Pre-Reqs for this, so if you need your 500, take this one!
keep it up
I took both his econ527 and 499, I can not say that they were super easy, but as long as you go to classes and take notes, you will be fine, and you dont need to read text book at all.
Walls is generally a good guy and a good prof. He seems to remember what it was like as a student and therefore doesn't have ridiculous expectations. I wouldn't call his class super slack but if you are willing to put in the work you should be able to do well. I would take another class with him in the future.
This was my favorite class over the course of the semester. His midterm was easy, but final not so much. My biggest issue with Walls was that he wasn't all that helpful when discussing the term paper and gave a random mark (no explanation or comments given). Didn't do as well in class as I hoped. Be warned the grading scale is way too high.
Took the movie business course, I'm one of the laziest people around, and never want to study. It's possible to get a A in this class. Just read all the journals, show up to class and write some notes, his sample midterm and final are almost the same as the final and midterm. Only thing that might get frustrating is the paper. otherwise not bad.
A good Professor. Makes an interesting subject look easy. I saw some comments that the class was a joke, not so!, he just made you understand!. Grades fair but its not a walkover. I think he is an asset to the University.
This guy is rediculous! I was excited to learn about OPEC and oil markets and all we did was look at paper after paper of dry econometric analysis of data. Walls gets off on this stuff! Class should not be about analyzing regression coefficients for an entire semester! BTW 79.3% = C+?! WTF! His grading scale is messed and he doesn't curve at all!
Beware. Grading scale is over-the-top, and this to date, has been my lowest grade in economics. The textbook is useless - don't bother buying it. Attend classes, take AMAZING notes, do all the readings, and hope that's enough to get you an A... unlikely though. I would NOT recommend this course.
Took 427,494,527. People who complain are just lazy. Of course the grading scale will be steep, HE GIVES YOU ALL THE TESTS AHEAD OF TIME! Just read and pay attention. If you're not sitting at a min of 95 in his class then, I'm sorry, but you're a straight up idiot. Don't get mad at him because you're lazy. BTW, thanks for the grad school reference.
Dr. Walls, is a great professor and I agree with the Comment Before This one. If you go to class you save time on having to read all the articles required. He wants all his students to succeed. His TA's try to give you full marks. To succeed go to class, take notes, and do the reviews. The scale might look steep but it's not impossible to do well!
Content is difficult. Must memorize the reviews and regurgitate the answers on exams. He is not helpful if you don't know a review question so become friends with the smart kids or fail
Lots of material but he gives you review material for the first 3 midterms. He is self admittedly lazy. Crush the midterms with his reviews because the final and paper are HARD. If you are willing to put in the time you can get a good mark.
A very interesting, fun movie economics course. Quizes weren't hard, just make sure you do the readings (The Squire book and assigned readings) and go to lectures. The paper was not easy but wasn't extremely difficult. The course is rewarding and you will get a better understanding of the movie industry
Course was a watered-down version of 395. Classes are not mandatory and course work is the equivalent of getting an A for effort. If you attempt assignments, you get a gold star regardless if you actually answered the question right. Spend a fair amount of time on the project that's worth 50%, but don't stress to come up with a complex model.
Good review of statistics. If not for this class, I would have failed Econ 495! This guy should be teaching all of the Econometrics classes.
Lots of readings in the coursepack and it's hard. I can see why some other students have complained so much. Definitely come to class because the prof explains the readings so even the stupid people can get them. The term paper was a lot of work.
Definitely buy the coursepack from Bound & Copied. This was the best econ class I took this year. This one of the few econ profs that could do well in the real world.
Good course. The term paper helped me get a great job. Thanks Prof Walls!
A whole group of us Applied Energy Econ students took this course together. It's what you make of it. About 1/2 of us thought it was great. The other half of the class was totally clueless!
If you always go to his classes and pay attention to his lectures, and do all the practice questions that he posts on bb. You will do fine. He is very clear, and his lectures are really well organized.
Hands down best professor ever. To do well in his class, attendance is mandatory.
The readings are really hard but the guy explains them in plain language so if you are lazy and don't go to class you are kinda screwed. Not hard to pass but hard to get an A. Term paper made a lot of students drop.
Took summer class to finish degree. Like other posters say, attendance is mandatory to do well. Lots of readings.
Very organized. Lots of examples in class. Posts review questions on BB. Wish I had this guy for 201.
As everyone says thre is lots of reading but go to class and everything explained clearly. Sometimes a lot of math and statistics in the readings. Mostly gives you the test questions in advance. They are hard.
This was like a review of econ 495 econometrics, except I could understand it this time. Take 495 at the same time as 493, and you will actually get a good grade in 495!
Can be sort of boring at times but overall pretty good for an econ teacher. Seems more practical than other econ classes.
Pretty good. After 201 I thought econ really sucked but now its almost fun.
Pretty good professor. A lot of readings that are really hard. Not like textbook readings in other classes. The readings are eexplained well in class, but don't miss class or it's really really hard.
Good professor, understands his stuff. About middle of the road for difficulty, I did well. Found him to be a jerk in person--he's quite sarcastic and doesn't take students' concerns seriously.
very interesting course. You actually learn and retain the stuff you learn in his class unlike other classes where you forget everything as soon as you finish with your exams. He is very very clear makes difficult stuff easy to understand for his students. All of his classes are recommended. However, ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY.
Pretty good professor. Lots of readings but the guy explains them to you without using lots of maths. Very useful class if you plan to work in energy sector downtown.
he's a good professor. his class is just based on papers that he goes over in class. just attend class and you won't need to read the papers. quiz questions are directly off the quiz review sheets.
Good professor that is interested in what he teaches. Often begins class by discussing articles from Wall St Journal or The Economist that relate to class material. Assigns lots of readings. Go to class if you don't want to read them all!
Professor is pretty good. But the class is at 8 AM and you have to write a term paper.
Good class and not hard to get good grade if you put in the effort. It trains you to work in the energy business.
Took this class a few years to finish the econ degree with energy concentration. The prof trains you to work like a independent energy data analyst. Work hard on the project cause mine helped me to land my first job.
Movie economics. Nice to have a prof that could survive in the real world.
Good lectures. Easy quizzes. Killer hard final exam.
Not bad.
Best class I took during my undergrad the textbook used in class was also used to teach MBA students. He gives out lots of good example for students to understand concept more easily. He wants his students to succeed. very helpful his class is NOT an easy A. but the stuff you learn from his class stays with u. prob best Professor at econ dept
Pretty good but you must attend class and its always early in the morning.
Not bad for boring econ class.
You better go to class if you wanna pass. Boring class and was just a really bad prof experience for me. He tried to make himself out as the easiest prof and marker, but do not be fooled - he expects A LOT. He blamed hard marking on the TA's but I don't buy it, I think they follow his instructions to a T. Q worth 40% on final came out of nowhere.
He misled his students regarding the content on the final. I emailed him about it and he ignored me. Dropped from an A to a B+ just from the final exam. The material is in dire need of updating and he seems like a very lazy professor, often late to class by a few minutes and his office is in the same building! The text is also far too technical.
Lazy and never replies to any emails I send him. He has a bit of an ego. I honestly didn't learn anything of value that I might use in the future. The class was boring and common sense, but Walls made it look like it was a complicated thing. I wouldn't recommend this class or this prof.
Really nice guy. Tells you what to expect on the quizzes yet the class still performed bad. His final is hard but is willing to curve the class mark.
Tough tests and final exam but a good class. Always helpful in office hours and very responsive to student questions.
No textbook and have to read too many papers beyond student ability to comprehend. Going to class a must. "Quizzes" too hard even have the questions in advance. Hard but learned something and grade was ok.
Readings package 2 inch thick on both sides so hard to read but lecture make readings assignment seem not so hard.
Interesting enough and helpful prof but way too hard for the grade you get. For the amount of work you could take 2 or 3 Religious Studies or Greek &Roman studies classes and get As instead of taking this econ class and getting a B+.
Helpful and always talks about Wall St Jrnl and The Economist when referring to current news and introducing why we should even care about the course informations. This guy is is in the student gym like several days each week. Not sure how old he is.
Took this a few years back when doin g the applied energy program. Very useful and helped me land a great job.
REadings are hard but thats why we go to class. Quizzes are easy. I heard the final is really hard but don't know yet.
Econ of movies class is interesting. Lot of hard readings but all covered in class and tests not really that hard if you go to class and listen. One of the better options for econ majors.
Class was good. Other studnts are pikers. Tests not hard if you actually make an effort. Duh its not rocket science.
Managerial economics class. Interesting and not hard. My older brother took almost exactly the same class in his MBA here at U of C.
Good prof and class. Too many readings but if you go to class you don't really have to read them cause he discusses them during the class.
Pretty good for 8am class. Quizzez seem easy but heard the final is killer. Don't know yet.
Pretty good.
Very rude to students. Course has not changed all information given is very dated.
Don't take this class. Slide deck he has gets less comprehensive as the material progresses to the point where later lectures have no slides and are him talking so studying can be challenging later. Grading scale is trash with A- at 90-91 and B range in 80-90. C in 70s. Get 75 on the final you top out at B assuming you ace the 3 quizzes and paper.
This class hits you like a truck at the end. One final question is 40/100 marks where you had to do a Peter Tracey style graph analysis. Except we've never done any practical examples in class so if you didn't get it, boom -40% of that 35% test. He closed D2L and internet class site before final marks were up so 55% of marks were left in limbo. :/
Too many online readings and 3 term tests. The guy gives you most of the questions in advance and goes over them before the test but its still kinda hard. Term paper and final are hard. My boss says it was a good class for him so I took it too.
First quiz was too easy but still have term paper to do. Course pack is li,ke a brick but don't really have to read it if you wake up and go to 8am class. Class is alwyas full.
Him give good class in managerial economical. Nice prof and speaking chinese too :) so mus careful talk if him can hearing.
Class was pretty good. It's an option for the Logistics & Supply Chain Management option . Anything sort of hard is covered in class many times. Lots of classmates only show up on test days and think they can pass. Arts students are so lame.
Would be impossible to understand the readings without going to class. Class ususally full even early morning.
Good class and prof. Dressed for BSD on last day of class too .
Good 400 option. Two exams and a paper. Like all economics courses, 2nd half workload increases and content is a bit harder.
I liked the term paper. The review for the quizzes were great. The final was completely unexpected and ten times harder than the quizzes. Class attendance to understand the papers is critical. I cant imagine if I hadnt had Econ 495. Econ 395 cant possibly be enough prep.
Walls is lazy, he assigns far too many readings with complicated econometric models that are many levels of difficulty above the 395 prereq & does not explain them or go over them in any detail. Gives you easy quizzes so he can hammer you on the final. Lectures are terrible, no substance or value. Would've been far more interesting if David cared.
He is a really good and a really caring prof. I highly recommend him. He gave us the quizzes in advance and told us exactly what we needed to know for the final and what would be on it. I feel like the course package wasn't necessary, just go to class and read what he posts online and you'll do good.
He's alright. He acts like the class is easier than it is. Quizzes are easy but essay and final not so much. He likes to say stuff like "You should know this from math 265" when math 265 isn't a prereq for the class? So it can be frustrating at times.
Lot of reading but all discussed in the class. Really don't need to read the readings at all if you just listen in the class. Tests and term paper are easy.. Final was killer. Still got a good grade.
Covered entire book cover to cover. Lots of problems assigned from the book but the quizzes are chosen from the assigned problems so its easy to get a good grade.
Prof use slides on the lecture, but if you cannot understand, you should use textbook after class, the final paper based on the textbook chapters, But not easy to get a good grade.
Lots of readings on course webpage but don't need to buy a book. This class makes me feel like I learned nothing in Econ 201.
The whole class was going over different papers so you either buy the course package and read it or you show up to class and he goes over them. Term paper just had grade on it meaning he didn't even read it but most ended up with a B which is dumb considering work. Quizzes were easier but the final was long and tested all material which was harder.
Summarizes the typical econ prof at UofC. Cares more about his research than providing an engaging class or being connected with students. The class goes over extremely tough topics, however he does a good job of telling you what to focus on, and if you are good at summarizing countless economics papers then youll do fine. Final is tougher.
Final will ruin your mark.
His powerpoints are awful, and if you don't go to class, you really won't pass. His lectures are so dry it is really hard to want to learn. The course material is very interesting, but the way he talks is so dry that he makes course material not interesting at all. For final papers, he won't even read your papers but gives everyone the same mark
He is super chill, and his class is a breeze if you go to every lecture and write down what he says. This class did not have a final so it was easier, but usually his final is usually hard and will drop your grade. The paper he wont even read and gives the same grade to everyone. overall, a solid choice to take a class with!
A cool guy. His classes don't have much math involved which is a bonus! Show up to class and you will ace the quiz and exams. The only downside is the paper which is time consuming and he only skims them. However, I disagree with past comments and I think that his lectures are actually engaging and super fun! :)
This is one of the very few econ profs in the department that you can tell really cares about his students. He is super knowledgeable on the topic and very helpful during office hours. If you go to class he highlights the takeaways of the papers you will do good on the quizzes. Everyone I know got a B on the term paper. But the final was hard.
He is such a caring and genuine prof. He truly cares and listens to his students and is always willing to help! Ive taken about 3 classes with him and would take every single one if i could. His lectures are actually internet i never get bored of them. Highly recommend!
Honestly this guy has to be the best professor I've had. He explains things clearly and goes into it assuming you know nothing. Course material is super interesting and he explains the fallacies of models which I found brilliant.
I cant stand how he responds to emails
Always interesting material, his constant dad jokes keep you interested and coming back for more. One of my top three profs, always clear and makes the material fun.
Awesome professor, have a wide range of knowledge, lectures are interesting. If you review his practice quiz question, you will get a success in his quiz. His final exam is hard, really testing your understanding about this course. ECON371 is not a really good GPA booster, but the material is close to daily life, and gainful.
Prof. Walls has some very insightful and interesting, yet easy courses. For petroleum economics, he was very passionate about crude oil markets and the impact of technologies. He had some tests that were not too challenging and a final paper that was interesting to write. Overall a good professor and a safe bet if you want a GPA improvement in ECON
idk why he gave almost everyone in the class B- or C+ in this semester? Seems he or the TA havn't grade the final paper project. Just give a random grade to everyone.
Econ 328 was a very interesting course and the content was explained well. The quizzes were all very fair, you can do well as long as you do the work. The final paper was nice because we got to choose our own topic. Prof. Walls is very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about what he does which made lectures more interesting.
Best prof and class I have taken in my degree. If you are going to work in a field related to energy, I highly recommend you take this class. Quizzes are straight forward, no hidden materials. Final Paper is a heater, but if you speak with him about your outline you should do very well.
Honestly, I'm kinda lost in the quizzes this sem. Thankfully, if you know how to write a good paper this class is for you because it over rides your bad grades. Had him previously and he was good as well. You can tell he tries to be super considerate of the students bc he has uni kids, doesn't mean you can push him around with excuses tho.
he's really nice cuz he tries to relate to the students as much as possible and he is super considerate and tries to make the class entertaining.
The professor makes the class enjoyable with his relatable teaching style. Quizzes can be tricky, but the final paper gives you a chance to shine. Unstuckstudy was a big help for test prep.
