You know, the trouble is this guy's teaching method may have had some potential. SOME!! Potential. Had he reinforced his lectures which are often interrupted by psychotic self-dialog with READINGS and if recitation wasn't just fooling around with maple
Likes to lecture a lot and can get a little confusing. Big class, If you do the reading you're set.
easy if u keep up with the class
i was an eco major. this guy made me hate eco. a textbook would help. and i think he is deffinately insane. he talks to himself on a regular basis.
Didnt Understand much in class. He taught too fast for the class. Must go to the T.A. if you want to pass the class

terrible thats all i must say

omg stay away...just dropped this class..guy is a psycho...
Very unclear and couldn't stand every minute of it. PNC'd the class and that was the best decision of my life. Don't take him!
this guy sucks! worst class ever! no textbook and throughout lecture all he does is draw graphs... recitation is messing around with maple for 40 minutes..u learn nothing!
This guy is a first class prick. Do not take him!!!
He may seem harsh, but is really allright. I think he gives very good explanations, so if you keep up with him, its relatively easy!

Just dont get him
He sucks, I was able to get a B only by killing myself for it. You can keep up with him when he talks, but he leaves gaping holes in his lecture, but there is NO READING MATERIAL. and his practice sheets have NO ANSWERS!
he's a horrible teacher. lectures are unclear, no textbook, worthless recitations, and sometimes he starts talking about random stuff in the middle of the lecture. tests aren't that hard if u study a little bit, but i still wouldn't recommend taking his class.
jerks!
Easiest A I have ever received. Supply and demand can't get any easier than this. Can't believe anyone can fail this class. Go to class, do your work, take notes, pay attention as you would with any other college course and you will be sure to get an A.
I think he is a good professor, and thinks about your pocket by not requiring you a text book, which would be likely to cost $100-150. If you take notes, do the hand outs and test review questions you ll definetly get a B at least! Go For It!
I dont even know where to start. Jokes are NOT funny! Very hard to understand, not available for office hours. and he would prefer other students teach u the material! his exams are impossible. if it wasnt for TA Jaqueline i would not have passed. All other TAs are worthless! Avoid at all cost!!!!
The guy's a drab, boring, corny old geezer, but his class is damn easy. If you goto lecture and stay awake, you're gonna get at least a B (unless you're stupid). He doesn't cover as much useless info as some of the other professors who teach 108, although his course is more math intensive.
Avoid this man at all costs. We didn't have a course packet to study from (that past students had) & his notes are useless. He refuses to wear a microphone in Javits 100. Also when he asks us a question, 200 people would answer at the same time & he also refuses to clarify it! His jokes are bad too.
He is not worth being a professor. He refused to have a celerbration party for the graduates in MAY. 2005 without providing any reasonable explanation. All students hate him and no one likes his lecture
WORST PROF EVER!
I don't know who are these students calling people stupid....but you should take a step back and look at yourself. Anyway, this is about Dawes, he is a horrible Professor. I am a A student, I went to class everyday and I went to office hours and this has got to be the worst class ever in the world. Simply put-DON'T DO IT TO YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!
would be bearable without the monotone voice
No Comments
Great guy. funny jokes if you are intelligent enough to understand them. doesnt make you buy an expensive text. work isnt hard, and keeps out the unnecessary crap. do the work and you wont have a problem.
His lectures were the longest hour and twenty minute periods of my life. So monotone, so boring, and his occasional humor is not worth staying awake for. The material is a little difficult, but go to recitations, use common sense, and ask questions, you'll be alright. Just refrain from the constant urge to walk up on stage in the middle of lecture and punch him in the face.
I don't know what everyone is talking about. He is not a bad teacher. If you study like you are suppose to, there is no reason why you can't get an A in this class. I got a A in his class and I'm TAing for 108. And i will say that I dont consider myself smar or anything.
DAWES is the man!!! he simplifies the material, so it doesn't become overwhelming. the stuff doesn't go fast or anything. as long as u go to lectures and do the "packet" u r in very good shape. btw, take advantage of his office hrs.
sucks sucks sucks, the TA's do not even know anything
SUCKS!!!
lectures are horrendous
i don't think his exams r that hard, as long as u do the packets then u should be fine. the TA sucks. they don't even fully understand the materials. Lecture is boring. i often felt asleep but i still think u'll be fine if u study the review questions before the test
Dawes is boring but a nice guy. The material itself is boring but he could do more to keep it interesting. He grades fairly, just make sure to do well on the recitation activities cause the tests are hard
extremely boring, monotone voice puts me to sleep, worst lectures ever, i used to be very interested in eco...this man made me despise it
horrible lectures. he thinks he is funny when he makes those annoying cracked voices and moans, but its not. material itself seems understandable but you cannot learn anything in his lectures. recitations are alright depending on TA. highly recommend looking at BUS110 instead of ECO108.
Horrible lectures. I had a horrible TA (fat dude). just try to avoid this guy.
Hardest intro class ever taken, Monotonic voice so its hard 2 stay awake. Jokes are not funny at all even though he tries so hard. SUCKS!!!! Highly not recommended
worst prof. ever, tests are relatively easy in the beginning and then get harder. his lectures are terrible and makes everything so confusing. wait to take this class with dwyer.
Most people got low grades in the class. Personally I thought it was very easy. Lectures are rarely useful (but lecture activites require you to go at times), doing the workbook will help to do well on tests for sure. Overall class is pretty easy, Dawes can be entertaining at times, very sarcastic kinda guy.
i'd keep away
put some effort and do the packet and test reviews and you'll do fine.
If your taking his class, good luck
My first class as an ECO major, had me second guessing that decision. Class isn't too difficult, as long as you GO TO LECTURE and PAY ATTENTION. Do the packet, as the test is based closely on it. He seems monotone and boring, but if you listen to him its really not that bad. This class is EXCELLENT preparation for ECO 305 if u take it with him.
goes too fast, not very clear, doesnt explain where he gets numbers from. concepts arent explained. dont recc.
couldnt hear what he was saying in lectures, all i heard was the word "apple"... he didnt want to use a mic for some reason. the packet sucked, and his jokes were kind of mean, he made us pay for the response pad thing, but used it only TWICE though out the whole sem, DONT TAKE HIS CLASS
Prob the worst prof. his jokes are terrible. It seems like the TA's don't even know when the exams are gonna occur. Went to get extra help, but tutor said he never seened the packet before. DO NOT take this professor!!
He has a terribly mundane voice. His tests aren't easy, but all of his handouts are online and you can teach yourself the whole class through them. Attendence isn't mandatory most of the time. TAs are always around to help you. You'll get a good grade if you fully understand his handouts and know a bit of calc (slopes, increasing/decreasing)
I'm horrible at any type of math, but I was surprised that I ended up with a B+ in this class. I skipped a few lectures, which didn't make a difference, because if you can do everything in the "Packet" you're guarenteed a good grade. You're mandated to buy a CPS, but you hardly use it. Overall, ECO 108 was a wonderful expirience.
This guy is funny. Do the homework, go to the class, get help from the TA's. It's easy if you did all that.
took the class a bit scared, i heard that 'every one' does poorly in this class. do your hw, do the reviews, go to office hours for help, and STUDY, you'll do fine.
My favorite professor so far. He's hilarious. It's a good idea to go to class, but all in all the material is pretty straight foward. I heard really bad things about him but I thought he was great.
His class is boring like hell. but hes an easy grader. if you do well in recitation then you will be fine. the curve for the class is high cause a lot of people don't do well. easy class
GOOD PROF. I LIKEd HIM ALOT. MANY NOT DOING WELL BUT I THOUGHT HIS TESTS WERE EASY. HE TRIES TO MAKE THE CLASS INTERESTING TOO.
ben stein's clone, impossible to pay attention in class, but his office hours are helpful
Besides boringness (his lectures work better than valium), he refuses to leave room to doubt as far as grades go, even if it means that you'll have to get a 4.0 every semester afterwards to make up for his obnoxious infallibility.
horrible. boring and thinks hes funny. no textbook. his TAs are horrible too. not very clear in his lectures. puts you to sleep. theres a work book but its useless if u dont understand the material and have no text to refer to. avoid if possible
Horrible, Stay AWAY!
everything has been already said. although he's a horrible horrible teaher on props is that there's not much to study so its easy to pull an A BUT the info can be hard to understand, given his unclear lectures. the info is easy but his teaching is not...so i strongly suggest take another professor any way possible.
Don't take his class.
wow. where to start? dawes =dawes. rambles. monotone. REALLY WEIRD. lectures dont make sense at ALL unless ur a nerd. 3 midterms(1 is opt) n final. lots of curves in class b/c class avg is usually around 60s. just go to TA hrs a few days b4 exams n do the packet!! hes not as bad as he seems. u'll hate him wen u have him then aftr u pass, u wont lol
Do not take him. He is old and annoying as well as boring and hard. Eco108 is an intro class, but he makes it as if it's the last eco you will be taking. He didn't use a book, we used a packet WITH NO OF FINDING OUT IF WE HAD THE CORRECT ANSWERS. Bad grader too, if you don't ask them to regrade ur test u will get a low grade. very stressful profess
He's a good professor. It's not hard to do well if you do your work. Most of the people I knew complained about the grades, but the truth is, they don't even study. If you put in some time doing the packet and go to office hours, you will do well.
The class really isn't that bad. There is no doubt that Dawes is boring and that his sense of humor lacks humor. For this class you need to go to office hours or you won't get a grade above C. Although sarcastic at all times, Dawes is helpful during office hours. Packet work is a must in order to understand concepts.
Save yourslef and not take him.
The TA is much more helpful. They teach much more clearer than the teacher.
dont do it to yourself unless its your major....dont do it...my gpa's been suffering ever since. now its almost 3.4 but he put me below 3.0 when i was a freshman and i battled ever since to get it back.
Don't let all the bad ratings scare you. I was nervous about taking his class but I'm glad I did. He usually has classes of 500+ students, so 5 bad ratings a semester isn't really bad. He isn't an AMAZING teacher, that's why there are no good ratings. He's probably one of the better Eco profs, but don't take Eco if you are mathmatically challenged.
He is a good professor it is the eco that's boring. Class is difficult but I was glad I took it with him and 30 other students as opposed to 500 people in Javits.
His classes are usually small so you are better off taking eco with him than in a big lecture hall. Knows his stuff, sarcastic, funny at times, is very helpful during office hours and curves like crazy. I got a 68 on the final and still got A- overall
Great Professor.Economics is really boring, he's really funny. Doesn't teach out of the textbook which is better because you don't have to memorize all the useless technical terms. Teaching economics in Spring 2010 and I'm dying to be his TA.
hmmmmmm what can i say about this class...ok here's the thing...he teaches like this is a 300 level class but it really is a 100 level...just do the packets and you'll be good....[btw very boring lectures]
Now that he's teaching a smaller class, he is much more helpful. Economics is impossible to make enjoyable, and he doesn't help. BUT, his office hours are helpful, and beneficial for a good grade. He doesn't use blackboard and does random activities and clocks questions in class so attendance is recommended. Beware the MAPLE program. Fair professor
Best option for intro eco. Small class and easy if you just do the packets. If you do the packets, guaranteed A.
Do the packet and everything is fairly easy. Office hours are helpful.
Good professor, he knows how to teach and he is helpful during the office hours. His tests might be challenging, but if you attend class and keep up with it, its an easy A
No PPT post on blackboard, need to copy down everything. A lot of HW and Handout.
One of the better teachers in the Economics department. Material can be dry if you have no interest in economics. The class is def challenging for 100 level but if you do the activities in the book and take recitation seriously you will be good. Tests are fair not that helpful in office hours. Overall he is a good lecturer, take notes.
if youre going to take this course. take it with him. go to his office hours/sit on the sixth floor and he'll pass by he helps out so much. do EVERY activity. and attend every lecture if you dont youll miss out on alot. hes sarcastic but he means well.
I'm shocked that Stony brook let him teach....
i love him
Teaches in a dull, often confusing, manner. Makes you purchase and use his own book that is the same incomprehensible language that he uses in class. Tells you to attend class for clickers, yet never uses clickers. Classroom (Union) was overcrowded and uncomfortable. Overcomplicated very simple concepts by using his own terms.
do not take him, try and look for other professors because this class was simply ridiculous. you are not required to go to class, but if you don't you'll miss the clicker questions. and do the activities in the book. the class does not have a real textbook, just his own workbook which is as hard to understand as he is.
I loved this professor. He was great, funny and the textbook was really helpful. with just a little work, his class is an easy A.
i saw the low ratings on here and thought well i did really good in AP econ in highschool i should be fine, NO. hes sooooooooooo bad, super boring, unclear, you will fall asleep in his class. He teaches economics with his own view on things, very hard to learn that view, dont take him, you will regret it
Excellent professor! If you're going to take ECO 108 take it with him in the Spring. Going to class isn't necessary except for the clicker questions but you don't really have to pay attention. Whoever says that the required workbook for this class is confusing is a complete moron. Just do the workbook pages before each exam and you're good to go.
He's an awesome prof. His lectures can be boring, but he's nice and helpful during office hours. Tests are easy as long as you do the workbook. I feel bad for him when the test grades in our class are low but it's because people are lazy!!My friends and I do everything in the workbook and go to office hours and make 90+ on his tests.
I really liked him as a professor. He can be very boring but if you go to class and pay at least a little bit of attention to the lecture you will be fine. Lots of people complain about him, but this was an amazingly easy class for me. If you mess up on one midterm there is a makeup too. =]
well all we did is do questions and more questions in class. unless you are willing to go to office hours, or else you will never know if you did the questions right or wrong. which can be a bit annoying... He is a good professor though but his 108 class is more about calculating instead of intro to eco. exams are not that difficult.
Humor is very dry. Economics may seem very difficult at first. Everyone did horrible the first test because no one understood his teaching method. But the key to doing well in his class is doing his workbook and definitely not doing it the night before. Workbook has no answer key so go to the T.A.'s because they can be helpful.
This man is awesome, and he honestly tries to make the material as clear as possible. Very approachable when he comes to recitation. I never went to office hours but still did really well in his class. Got an A by doing all workbook. Take him, especially because he is head of the Undergrad ECO program.
Great professor that explains everything in plain, simple, English. Tips: DO THE WORKBOOK, EVERY PAGE, ask for more points on exams (you'll get them), always go to recitation, try to get on his good side, Dawes is an awesome guy. The class is four exams with a makeup exam to help students improve their grade.
Definitely not an easier Eco class compared to the other professors. For his class it requires some work to study for the 4 midterm and one optional. Take other professors' class than his would probably be a better idea
If you do the workbook pages and ask any extra questions in either recitation or office hours, then you will be fine. Dawes follows the workbook very closely. The course was fair and there are no surprises.
such a difficult class. You have to go to class and recitation and as soon as you are lost in the class it is near impossible to get it back.
Great professor! As long as you actually go to class, read/ do the workbook pages, and PRACTICE OLD WORKSHEETS you'll do great!
Very poor professor. Extremely unclear in his lectures, awful sense of humor and has no interest in clarifying the material in further detail than in lecture. Recitations are useless and you MUST attend due to graded assignments, although NO course material is covered or reviewed in recitation with an instructor. AVOID at all costs.
Dawes is an SB institution and one of my favorite professors of all time. He goes out of his way to keep it simple and I enjoyed his hokey sense of humor
Just study out the text book and you'll be fine .. not the greatest person to listen to..
He is clear with what he wants. Tests are straightforward. He can be boring/dry and has a weird sense of humor. Just stay on top of the workbook and recitations and show up for class. Teaches economics through a mathematics lens, is NOT big on concepts.
This is a horrid professor. Please take any other eco professor but him. He even says other professors are easier and better than he is. His "workbook" and lesson plans are unclear and leave little room for improvement if you do bad. Look at his low 2. something rating!! Avoid this class and take another eco professor.
This man knows the material well and he seems inspired when teaching the subject. He is extremely well versed on the subject matter and if you are a business or economics major, this is a professor you have to take. Stony Brook would not be the same without him.
AVOID. Dawes is unnecessarily hard, and once you get lost theres no coming back. He wrote his own textbook which is very confusing. please take someone else and spare yourself the misery.
Dawes can be a little boring to say the least during lecture, but the recitations are extremely easy. As long as you do the text book problems, and do the practice tests before each exam, you should be ok. The class itself isn't too difficult, at least it wasn't for me, but the majority of people seemed to think it was pretty tough. Take the class.
This class really comes down to one thing... Did you complete the workbook or not? If you did congratulations you will get an A. Oh, you didn't? Good luck on the test. Personally didn't go to class much but did every page in the workbook and got an A.
This class is not a very easy class. If you not listen to what he said in the class, it will become difficult. Hovever, you can spend more free time to figure it out by yourself. The knowledge of this class is not very difficult, most of them are just simple calculus.
He is is definitely a university professor... And teaching a course mostly freshman are taking I guess it can hit some people a little hard. If you take the class(and him) with the proper attitude, you will realize he is just an old man with an off color sense of humor. He is also very helpful if you show an effort and includes some great handouts
This is the most unique professor I have met.
Dawes isn't for everyone. Lots of material for 108, and not huge on concepts. Definitely get the workbook. If you pay some attention, do the practice tests, and workbook as needed, this is a pretty easy A. (You can probably even get an A without going.) Dawes is a great guy, and he's very helpful if you approach him. I personally love his humor.
If you pay attention in class, do the practice exams and still manage to fail this class, college is obviously not for you.
Easy A. I didn't attend most classes but his textbook and recitation was all I did. He is pretty awesome as a professor
He's a great professor. He explains concepts as simply as possible, and if you keep up with him in the study guide then you will do fine. He requires that you know how to do mostly math related economics questions, opposed to memorizing terms. He provides the students with the previous year's tests, so you'll know exactly what to expect.
He's lectures are a little boring, I slept in almost all of them. However, the class is easy to pass. Just do all the exercises in the textbook and you'll be fine.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. If you can take another professor.
This class really isn't difficult at all if you are actually trying to learn something. A lot of tests, but if you mess one up there is opportunity to replace it with another exam(BEWARE it IS cumulative).
i never know what's going on in class. He assumes we already know half the material, and thinks we're dumb if we don't understand something that he finds simple.
i have absolutely no idea what is going on in class, he makes us by his own textbook that he personally makes and it doesn't explain anything just gives problems with no answer key. He doesn't post notes just answer keys to recitation or test questions but only shows the answer and never shows how he achieved said answer.
I hate this man.
Very easy class and the book makes it very clear to you. I don't know why people find it difficult. If you find this class difficult you need to retake middle school math all over again.
Great professor. Easy A if you tried. His textbook is a MUST HAVE for the course. It was your key to learning in his class. All his lectures revolve around the textbook so read it. Grading is so easy. It was so easy to get an A if you went to all the lectures. The only people I know who didn't do well were the ones who missed a lot of class.
WARNING: DO NOT ENROLL - Dawes is definitely the worst professor I have ever imagined. Unless you already know economics, you will not learn ANYTHING. Example: Used clickers to answer A or B question - half the class answered A, the other half answered B (no one knew and guessed) all he said was "Start studying" and never even said the answer.
I love this man! I've never taken an economics course before, so I wasn't confident in doing well for this class. Now I am almost done with the semester and I have gotten 90+ on almost every test. His teaching style was clear, concise, and made you think more analytically. Loved his humor, and was helpful when you asked for it. Take him for ECO108.
If you pay attention in class and do the practice tests in the workbook, you will do well. I had trouble at first because I have never taken economics before, but once I started really paying attention in class and doing the problems in the workbook, my grades boosted. He's not as bad as everyone says he is.
Dawes is arguably Stony Brook's most heralded professor. Throughout my first semester here, this man truly changed my life for the better. He is not only an amazing teacher, but a fantastic mentor as well. He came to my rescue on multiple instances, and his lectures are second to none. Do not even hesitate to take this class.
This guy has got to go.
Cant ask questions in 300prsn lecture. Emailed many times, no answer. Office hours? Spends most of it getting coffee. Txtbooks have no answers, only way of knowing is waiting until the day of the test when past tests answer keys are posted on blackboard (If they even are, sometimes hes "too busy") where you only have like 5 hours until your test.
If math is not your strong suit, you will have trouble in this class. Never missed a lecture but tests were still very hard, despite doing workbook and practice tests. Had to get tutors and multiple study groups to pass. Hardly a curve so don't count on that helping your grade. TAKE THE OPTIONAL EXAM. Think he's retiring next semester anyway.
Take with someone else. not worth it wait a semester if anything take eco 317 instead or 360
*Take a deep breath* All you will learn in this class is about fish, coconuts, and the Kumquat Corporation.
He really thinks you know everything, so he just goes through his lectures like nothing. DEFINITELY TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR!!
Drop it while you can. Expects you to already know information and makes you buy his textbook/workbook which gives zero explanations so it's just as confusing as his lectures.
He's a nice guy, but you really need to study by yourself.
