Great teacher! He made what could be a very boring subject, very interesting. He's helpful, clear, and paces the work well. The assignments help a lot to prepare for the exams, and he gives some extra credit work. Definitely choose his class.
awesome teacher...everyone else i talked to did horrible in their philosophy classes but im doing so well because he really helps his students understand the material...i would definitly take him again if i ever had to
Loved him! Such a nice guy, really wants his students to do well. Definately take him if you need to take philosophy
Devlin is a great guy! i learned alot about phil. in his class, very helpful and nice and wants the students to learn. doesn't make you feel dumb about hard topics. and hes a qt.
hes a really good teacher, easy, and explains everything very well. tests are really easy and if you listen in class you dont even have to study for the tests. attendance is important though.
awesome professor! he really explains the material well and wants students to understand everything. extremely helpful if needed, and really nice guy! take him!
really easy for a writing intensive course 4 papers due with one being a rewrite of the first paper. 3-4 pages. all semester he talks about arguments and making your paper better and as long as you take some of the advice and use it you'll be fine. there's no quizzes or anything just papers so if you're good at writing take him let alone hes easy.
One of the best professors here. EXTREMELY helpful and very clear in lectures. Gives assignments which help alot. Made what I thought was gonna be a boring class into a class I enjoyed going to. Def go to all the classes. His lectures help 100%. Would take him again. Highly recommended!!
Great professor.. definitely take him if you get the chance. Explains everything very clearly. I was dreading taking this class and it ended up being great. Exams are easy if you attend class and do the assignments.
Take him. Philosophy is difficult, but Prof Devlin makes it so easy to understand. He gives worksheets that really clarify what we were learning. If you take him, you will not regret it.
the man
He's a relatively new professor and is trying to get tenure, so he's very nice in class. He knows his stuff, and is extremely helpful. I would recommend him to anyone, even if philosophy isn't your thing. Great guy!
Good guy. Sign up for any of his classes without worry.
Dr. Devlin is probably one of the most helpful professors that you can find on campus. Not only does he make sure that you know know the content, but if you don't, he'll take the time out to help you to. It is obvious that he loves his job and gets you excited to go to class, even if Philosophy isn't your forte.
***He is offering PHIL 151 starting Spring 2009. Philosophy is fun. Take this class.*** Dr Devlin cares a lot about his students. He mainly teaches courses geared towards non majors, so he is used to students who find philosophy a bit baffling. I recommend any of his classes to anyone.
This guy is awesome. I think its impossible to fail his class. All you have to do is try and he makes trying easy. I'd reccomend him to anyone
He's awesome. I think he is one of the best professors the dept has to offer. He is always willing to help students, and doesn't make anyone feel inferior or stupid. Absolutly brilliant. I wish there were more profs like him.
Professor Devlin makes a difficult subject easy. He is really nice, and super helpful. I wish I could take more of his classes. Definitely don't pass this guy up!!
He is incredibly helpful and really nice. He is a great speaker and loves listening to your ideas. He keeps things really relatable and made me switch my major to Philosophy. Even outside of class he is helpful, he certainly goes the extra mile for anyone who asks.
Awesome teacher. This class is a requirement-- Found. of Logical Reasoning-- and he knew no one was interested in it. He makes the class understandable. Very helpful & very fair. I recommend him 100%
I had NO interest in this subject at all. He is a GREAT professor - made a boring subject interesting. As long as you go to class, take notes and do the handouts - you should get an A. No need of the book. He is so helpful and responsive. One of the best professors I've had at BSC.
Mr. Devlin rocks. Wonderful teacher, extremely smart, and wants nothing more than for every individual taking his class to do as well has the possibly can (and will go out of his way if need be to ensure that). Flippin Take Him!
AWESOME professor- has no problem slowing down or backing up if you are lost. Makes amazing study guides that really help with his exams. Grades weekly(ish) homework, has 2-3 exams, no mid-term and a final. Really willing to work with you, funny and a all around great guy. Had him 1x/wk at night and looked forward to every class!
DR. Devlin is the MAN!!! Seriously he is such a nice guy.I struggled at the beginning of the semester he was extremely helpful getting me back on track. Practice makes perfect do the study guides and take good notes go to class and you'll do well i guarantee it One of the best professors I've ever had at BSC!!! Great communicator & great teacher!!!
This is a very difficult course, but he takes the time to work with the students and answer all questions. He is also very accessible outside of class to help any student who is having difficulty. Since this class is a requirement, you absolutely want to make sure you take it with him.
AMAZING teacher i had absolute no interest in taking this class. Some parts of the class can be really hard but he works really hard with you to get you back on track. He's a really nice guy and doesnt go to fast so you have time to understand the material. I would absolutley take him again for any class!
Although Foundations of Log. Reasoning is a difficult subject across the board, Dr. Devlin is extremely effective with his lectures and gives you what you will need to excel. He is extremely helpful and does not throw any curve balls. I highly recommend!
Mr. Devlin is an amazing person and an overall nice guy. If you have taken Math Logic then this class will be a breeze. Some things are confusing but its not bad as long as you pay attention in class and study- I have not looked at the online book at all. All tests and some homework assignments are online in class.
If you want to pass this hard required class then take it with Prof. Devlin. He makes this class enjoyable and makes sure everyone understands what they are doing. Outstanding!
Definitely take! Makes a hard and unclear subject very understandable and easy to comprehend. He gives out tons of practice problems and makes sure his students are on track. 3 Tests, a few homework assignments, nothing out of control. Definitely take!
Professor Devlin in the BEST hands down. He is extremly helpful, and understanding. There are no surpizes, all the material on the quizes & tests is dicussed in class, so take GOOD NOTES ! Just show up to class & do your HW assignments and you'll get an A no problem :)
Take this class!! Bill is a dedicated instructor who actually wants you to learn something and he will take the time needed to ensure that he is available to you at all times of the day and night. I was horrified before taking his class and I would recommend it to anyone! Greatest Professor EVER!! You will learn FLR or your not attending his class
Dr. Devlin is an AMAZING professor! One of the best at Bridgewater! The material is not that interesting, but Dr. Devlin somehow makes you want to learn and is eager to help in anyway. I highly recommend him!
Great teacher. I took Foundations in Logic and he makes confusing, difficult material understandable & almost fun. He obviously enjoys the teaching and the material and he's very supportive if you need any kind of extra help. If you attend class, take good notes & do the study guides, you will do well, even though this is a tough class.
I was terrified going into FLR. Heard it was really hard and I will end up close to a C. By far my easiest class and its because of Prof. Devlin. Amazing professor who will help you out a lot. Study guides are amazing and his exams were easy. Class can be hard but Prof. Devlin knows how to make it clear. Take him and you will not regret. I promise.
Through a year at Bridgewater State University he has been the most helpful professor. FLR is well feared by everyone going in, but Devlin makes this class much easier to understand. The basic format of the class is taking notes, then practicing in groups. He is always available to help. Devlin is a great guy be sure to take him!
Phil 111 is one of the most hardest/feared courses but BSU students. If you take Devlin, you do not have to worry one bit. Got an A for this class because of his help. Amazing professor and and amazing personality. Does his best to help you out as long as you try. Makes it easy as possible. One of the bests. Take him and you will not regret it
This was an Honors Colloquium, and thus was only 1 credit, but required an inordinate amount of work for just 1 credit. Prof was insightful and helped out a lot over the course of the semester, and I did leave more interested in the topic than I was when we started, but the workload was not consistent with the credit yielded.
Bill is the best Professor he takes the time to teach his class not waste your time or his on useless papers on the subject! I learned so much and Bill was the reason! He wants to educate not alienate with papers that mean and teach absolutely nothing. Take him to Learn the Subject, you will not regret it
I was terrified to take this class, but he's the biggest sweetheart and the nicest guy. His notes are clear, his explanations are concise, and he doesn't give meaningless busywork. Do the HW and practice assignments and you'll pass easily.
I too was terrified to take this class, Bill is an awesome professor! I am in total agreement with what the person before me wrote. His notes are clear, his explanations are concise, and he doesn't give meaningless busywork. Do the HW and the handouts, ask questions, you will do fine. He lectures about an hour each class and then practice work.
He is an amazing teacher. He dumbs the material down enough so it's impossible to fail. Logical Reasoning is a tough course but if you do his classwork and homework everything becomes easy. If you're looking for a great teacher for FLR he is your guy.
Definitely one of the best professors I've had in college. A majority of people say that Foundations of Logical Reasoning is a very tough class, but not with this guy. Do what he tells you to and you should get an A.
Prof. Devlin could not be happier than when students ask thoughful questions. He will make you love philosophy. Be careful, it can be addicting. He is also very helpful when commenting on papers. Above all though, he genuinely wants you to succeed. What more can I say? Take Dr. Devlin!
"Practice Practice Practice!" There is no reason that you should fail this class with Devlin. He makes everything so clear and is always available for extra help if you need it. Just do your homework and show up to class! I loved this class. Yes, I said it. LOVED this class.
The Best teacher! Take him and you will understand the material.
I have nothing but great things to say about Prof Devlin. Brilliant professor, everything he says sounds like it's out of a textbook. One exam and one final paper. He's more than willing to clarify if you need help. Makes class very interesting and presents the subject material in a way that it easy to comprehend. I would highly recommend him!
One of the best teachers out there. So kind and helpful and really enjoys group discussion. Super approachable. I recommend him
Best professor I have had thus far. He is excellent at explaining the material and answering any questions you have. He is extremely helpful and a very kind man. I highly recommend him!
great teacher, would love to have him again
Breaks down the material into an easily digestible format. Attendance is important and will give you the material you need to understand thoroughly. If you have to take Foundations of Logic, do yourself a favor and take this guy.
Dr. Devlin is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He is extremely caring, compassionate, and understanding. He makes his class very easy to understand. Definitely take his classes!
Class was a breeze and that is due to Dr. Devlin's teaching ability. Would love to take another class with him.
Prof Devlin is extremely knowledgeable, articulate, patient and kind. He is very helpful and compassionate. I would take all of my classes with him.
He's a great professor! I was not looking forward to this mandatory course, but I actually enjoyed it. He follows the syllabus, gives plenty of examples, and hands out study guides before each test. He loves what he does and that's evident in his work. He's really sweet, kind of funny, and has clear expectations. I would take him again!
I took PHIL 111 online with Devlin & it was a breeze. I'd definitely recommend taking the class during the summer. You finish in 5 weeks and it's not too strenuous. He gives good examples of everything that's covered and responds quickly to posts and questions in the discussion forum. Most people hate PHIL 111 but it wasn't bad with him, at all.
PHIL111 is a class that is required and everyone usually dreads due to its difficulty. With Devlin, he is a very good speaker and is very clear when helping you understand something you don't. Show up to class, listen and take notes, do the practice packets, ask questions, and you'll get an easy A in the class.
Professor Devlin is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is kind, respectful, and if you need help with anything he is always there for you. His class is challenging but then again, it is Existentialism but Professor Devlin makes it fun and relatable. I would recommend him for any Philosophy class.
Bill is a gifted professor and he makes philosophy so much easier. He gives great examples to give a better understanding of the topic. If you have to take this class for credit, I would highly recommend Professor Devlin.
If you need a PHIL111 class, do yourself a favor and take him. He is like no other. I was always told that this mandatory class was a hard one to pass. Not with Devlin. He knows his stuff, teaches clearly and is a very kind man. If anyone fails with him it is because they didn't try. Only 3 exams and 1 Final. Easy homework. I highly recommend!
Very handsome
He's very nice and makes hard material easy to understand. If you don't get what's happening in class he is able to explain in many different ways until you understand. He was nice and approachable. I would take him again because he made a class that I was so nervous to take not bad at all!
Such an intelligent man who really knows how to go above and beyond to make his students understand. He really made a difficult subject matter easy to understand and I actually loved this class by the end. Very kind person who respects his students. Not too heavy on homework or tests! Would take a class with him again.
Prof. Devlin is the best possible professor to have for PHIL111. He is a gifted lecturer and makes difficult concepts easy to understand. He's friendly, patient, and approachable. All tests are take-home so you can use your notes, and you can redo HW assignments until you are satisfied with you grade.
Professor Devlin is a great teacher! He's tries his best to help students understand the material but I found if I skipped class I felt like the next time I came in I was so behind. DO THE PRACTICE TESTS AND ASK QUESTIONS! The class can be confusing but he really tries to help his student succeed. Definitely recommend taking this class with him!
Amazing professor, very nice and quick to help. He wants us to learn and hear our feedback. Love him.
took him for Foundations of Logical Reasoning. This is required by the university. Hands down best teacher for this course. I had no idea what this class was going to be about at first. really liked how he approached each lesson. Gives you multiple chances to ask questions and is really friendly about everything. Solid choice if you need this class
The first week into the online ethics course, there was a syllabus quiz worth 10% of our grade. Grading criteria was strict, but clear. We are graded on how we perform on DB compared to our peers. Discussions are engaging & Bill participates with thought-provoking feedback. Lectures are narrated slideshows that are professional & engaging.
he is the best for this subject. the material is so hard but he breaks it down so you can understand and actually remember for the exams. he is a very good professor one of the best!
Great Professor, this class was my 2nd class with him. Only grades you on 3 exams & attendance/participation so definitely show up to class. This may sound intimidating but he's very helpful and sometimes offers extra credit. He lectures & writes on the board, no powerpoints. Interesting and thought provoking material.
Bill is a great professor. His lectures are well prepared and are presented with excellent clarity. Some of the material is this course is challenging, and not for non-majors or minors. However, Bill will work with you for sure. He is very respectable and approachable for help and seems to care about appearing as that for students.
He is a great professor, makes everything seem so easy. You can take the homework online as many times as you like until you get the grade you like. All his tests are from his notes. Only one test online, others are in class on your laptop. He's easy on the eyes too.
Took this class for fun, while it was a lot of work it was very much worth it. Professor Devlin is very easy going and gives to you what you give to him. If you put effort into the class and do the readings you will pass with an A! Plus, his lectures are never boring, he is always hands on and moving he doesnt read off slides which is awesome!
A complete gentleman. If you pay attention you will learn an enormous amount from him. Philosophy can be a nightmare if taught by the wrong professor - this guy is THE RIGHT professor.
Prof Devlin is good. He cares about the material. He a clear schedule for the course and follows it. He's great and he cares about the material and students. Phil 111 is hard, he makes it EASIER and you actually LEARN. Trust me, TAKE HIM!!
Great Professor - Easy Class. 1-2 Weekly discussions. Make sure you respond to your classmates post, 3 exams - multi choice. provides power points to go along with the exams/discussions and he gives you the study guide. The answers are all in the power points so if you fill out the study guide you will be good. Stay organized and you will pass.
Philosophy 111 is hard for nonmajors but Professor Devlin makes it clear and easy. Only a few homework assignments and tests but if you don't do well on one it won't kill your grade. Would definitely recommend taking him!
Devlin does a fantastic job of making the material easy to learn and retain. Quizzes and HW are both done at home, therefore you can use your notes, which should mean an easy A or B (practice quizzes are provided). There is a cumulative final that is done in class on a laptop that you cannot use your notes for, but that's the only downside.
Professor Devlin is one of the best instructors I have had at BSU and his course was my favorite so far at the university. While you do need to show up to understand the material, he made it enjoyable and was able to successfully engage students in the discussion. He was also understanding of my military service while deployed overseas.
If you get annoyed with required discussion boards then do not take the online ethics class. There are way to many discussion boards and everyone has to pretend to care at all. Otherwise this class is about average, feels like busy work.
Logical reasoning is very mathematical so you do have to make sure that you study an hour before each test and review the study guide but the odds that if you put a little bit of timing it's a fairly easy a and he's very willing to help
This is subject that Bill that is clearly well versed in, but you will never feel he is going too fast or on tangents that aren't relevant. He will give you every tool you need to succeed there in class, you just need to show up and be present and this will be and easy A.
Devlin is an awesome professor. he makes sure you understand everything during a lecture. HW is online and you can retake it until you get a 100. All tests are online besides the final which is cumulative. Dont need a book
multiple attempts on homework assignments, tests 60-70 questions 2 hours to complete, all exams, assignments and final all online.
If you have the chance to take Mr. Devlin for any reason, do itttt! He is such a kind and thoughtful individual, and takes the time to help you understand the material IF you reach out to him. He's very straightforward and a solid professor overall. I've taken 2 courses with him now, PHIL153W (online) and PHIL231. Really made me love philosophy
10/10. Took him for an online summer class. The lectures were prerecorded and we had to write a repose to each lecture and he even gives you questions to reposed to. Easy class.
Took this as an online class. Lecture videos were LONG but necessary. If you dont watch the lectures and take notes you wont pass. Its tough material but he does good explaining it. Once you watch the lectures you have to do a weekly DB post which is easy. Its just the lectures are very long.. but necessary. Probably a lot easier in person.
The goal of the syllabus quiz is to understand what is required in the class, but questions ask about a topic that is missing words from the original, difficult for no reason. Learned nothing from the Syllabus that was 10% of my grade, except that we had homework weekly, exams on certain days, and that under no circumstances were their exceptions.
Weekly discussion board. 3 tests multiple choice. Gatta read lectures.
Devlin was born to teach philosophy and he was the best professor I had at BSU. He developed my foundation as both a student and thinker. I strongly recommend taking one of his 19th century philosophy classes if available. He is as humble and kind as he is intelligent and will guide you every step of the way. Thanks for the experience, Devlin.
Attend every class + take notes, he posts lectures online to take notes on, many tests & the homework feels like small quizzes. He is very understanding if you need to miss a class; review days are attendance optional; I would go if you can. Review days, you can ask anything. BE PREPARED TO TAKE NOTES. Great class, I wish the final was different.
I would 100% recommend him. I love how caring and attentive he is.
Professor Devlin is very respectful of students' time. He does the day's lecture quickly and efficiently, and class always ends early. There's a lot of days where class is optional, and you only go for help. The final was wicked easy, and he gave a practice one a week before. I really believe he is the best professor for this course.
I love Professor Devlin! He is a genuine guy and shows he cares about his students. I forgot to bring my laptop to class one day for an online exam and allowed me to use his, which was extremely kind. I know some friends who have struggled with understanding this class, but Prof Devlin really helped make this an easy class for me!
Professor Devlin is a super nice and understanding guy. I was hesitant to take a philosophy course because previous ones I have taken have been horrible but between the interesting course material and professor Devlin, the course was very pleasant and I am now interested in philosophy. The workload is very manageable.
Hey Devlin, is it moral to assign more lecture work over winter break than one would normally get over a Spring/Fall course? NO! THE ANSWER IS NO DEVILN!
What an amazing Professor Devlin is! I recommend taking this class, easy A or at least an B. We read three books throughout the semester, and I didn't read a thing. You do a total of four papers; pretty self-explanatory, explained well and in good direction. He gives amazing lectures. He takes attendance as well, JUST SHOW UP TO CLASS AND YOU PASS
I cannot speak for Prof Devlin as a person. However, his online course feels as though you're being set up for failure. 2-3 hours of lectures a week. 1 quiz with 4 questions. The questions are so niche that if you did not take 10+ pages of notes on every word he said you will fail. Do not take his online courses, they are designed for you to fail.
William Devlin is great professor. He is very knowledgeable about the subject and explains things in clear detail. Everyone has personal experiences with learning and I thought I would struggle with this class but the way he taught it made it very easy for me to understand everything he was teaching. It was a shocker to me when I wouldn't get 100s
You would never guess this was a level 100 course, it was harder than most of my 400 courses. I can't speak on his in-person classes but taking him online was very difficult. Be ready to take extensive notes on his lectures or you will not pass his exams (3 exams total that make up 85% of your grade). He seems very nice and knowledgeable though.
Professor Devlin is passionate and informed on the topic he teaches, so his lectures are very easy to focus on. He also writes most of what he says on the board, so you do not have to stress about getting all the important information down. There are three required books, which is unfortunate, but the workload is not bad and the quizzes are simple
I took this class to cover a humanities credit. You have to watch 2, hour long lectures and then answer the 2 DQs on blackboard. It really was not bad and only would take about an hour a week since I would put the lectures in 2x. One thing I dont like is that the 3 exams are 85% of the final grade and the DQ are only 15%. wish DQs were worth more.
Devlin is a caring professor who makes philosophy engaging. Lectures are clear, and the class is manageable with the help of resources like Unstuck ai. Definitely recommend for an insightful learning experience.
I have had this professor for Ethics and Philosophy. They are asynchronous classes & very lecture heavy. if you dont watch the lectures/ take notes, you will fail the exams. Other than that its fairly simple. Discussion posts after every lecture. 3 exams total. Put in some time and effort and youll get a good grade. Tip: watch lectures in 2X speed
Great class with a great professor. If the readings confuse you, don't worry, his lectures simplify everything and make it much more digestible. He makes you buy his own textbook, which is only available via bookstore, but other than that his class is very easy and extremely helpful/informational. Definitely recommend.
Professor devlin is awesome. The reading for the class might be confusing and hard to understand but when he goes over his lectures every class. He makes it really simple for you to understand so you understand his material . If ur gonna take philosophy make sure to have him he's the best by far. Each week you'll have a quiz so do the readings!!!!
Good teacher who understood he's teaching a lower level class. As long as you took notes you were pretty much golden. Pretty much all the quizzes were open note besides the final. Breezed through this course.
Lots of homework and test heavy
Best philosophy professor you'll have. He's super sweet and understanding. I had one quiz a week and a writing assignment in-class. Everything is covered in lectures beforehand. Only 2 papers and 2 rewrites, you complete the majority in-class and can ask him for feedback. Very responsive to emails. I highly recommend taking this class.
Near impossible to fail. Devlin provides amazing and in depth lectures and clearly wants to be here. He does not have slides but when he talks he makes excellent use of the white board for notes that fully prepare you. Easy and relevant weekly quizzes and 2 bluebook exams. Wish I could take him for a 300/400 what a guy!
Absolutely amazing professor. I've had him in 3 different classes. Only note is that in PHIL 135 the exams are 100% about the information on the lecture and so a lot of the information is regarding examples in the lecture rather than overarching philosophical information
