He's very clear in his lectures just pay attention to detail. I recommend video if you don't ask to many questions kind of a person. His test questions are a little tricky but their exaclty the same from what he goes over in class.
this class is very easy and straightfoward!! I took the distance ed class and the material is very easy eventhough it's math..advise to get copies of the old exam and study frm it...exams are practically the same..
I took the DVD class and it wasn't too hard. The word problems are easy, but the questions over the material are confusing. I studied the night before and made a B on all the tests, so it's easy to pass. Its best to find a copy of old tests b/c they dont change much. There are only 3 tests.
COOL GUY, STRAIGHT FORWARD GET THE OLD TEST AND STUDY THAT YOU'LL DO GOOD. TAPES ARE VERY HELPFUL AND DOES MANY EXAMPLES
I am not a strong math student but this class was easy. You dont need the book unless you want an A. Take him on DVD, he dumbs down the material. Funny and Charismatic Attitude. If you take him on DVD you have to be diciplined to take notes and keep up with the DVD's.
He is British and his accent is cool. He is very easy to understand. He makes me laugh over the DVDs so imagine how it would be in real time lectures.
Easy material .. fun professor. He explains everything very clearly and I love listening to his accent.
Probably has the most boring lectures in the history of college professors, but his tests are super easy (straight outta the books) and the material is dumbed down so much that a chimp could understand it. The only reason that I got a B+ is because I screwed up on one of the tests. He gets extra points for his British accent and pragmatic 'tude.
i took him on dvd and i scored an A-..hes fun i din even look at the dvd's just..scraped through the night before the exam. Met up with one other guy of my class n did the exam together. Wasy A...TAKE HIM! THE BEST!
Took his online course and did fairly well. He's an interesting man and makes all these statistics stuff easy to understand. His tests are [or used to be] online and multiple choice. Just learn the formulas and you'll be fine. BEWARE of his definition questions!! I got a B!!
He was very clear and precise in explaining the lectures. I took his class online and did fairly well even though I left watching the lectures till last minute. Just make sure that you read the assigned pages really well so that you understand the questions that they are based on. He does the... C. A and B only D. B and C only E.All of the above
I enjoyed this distance education class. I was worried that I'd get lost in the material but if you study for his class you'll understand it. Witty and interesting lectures. Easy to approach with questions.
this class was extremely hard i thought i would cty his test are very hard. Also it is distance ed.
Its Distance Ed and online which is bad. Hardly answers emails. Test are SO hard. The computing is easy but his worded questions alone will fail you! Curves high though cause everyone gets bad grades. I read the book and watch the lectures and took notes and still I'm barely making it. 3 tests. No final. Why is this class mandatory? :(
teacher is fing hard his tests are IMPOSSIBLE.. i guess its do able! i couldnt handle it..
Watch the lectures closely, it's mainly what the tests are made up of! The textbook has too much info and is progressively confusing and difficult. The numbers/formulas aren't what's hard on the tests, it's the word definitions that will get you. You need to study a good bit for this course.
I took this class over the summer... the videos are boring but helpful. As long as you watch them you will pass. He is a finny guy.
This class is a JOKE! It's online only, he never answers emails, you never see or hear from him when you need help. The class is disorganized, the tests are over things his videos do not even cover. If it was not a class that was mandatory, I dont think anyone would take this class. This professor is HORRIBLE!
I had to take Dr. Douglas' class twice, and passed the second time. Read the book BEFORE you watch the lectures, and make sure you WATCH the lectures. Networking with other 2300 students and getting a study group together was definitely a plus, you can always find somebody in the COMM lab taking the class who can help out.
This class is not as hard as everyone makes it seem. I am not strong in math and I made a 'B' in the class, with not much effort. I suggest focusing on his lectures instead of reading the text because his exams come straight from his lectures.
tests come straight from the lectures so you have to watch them. book alomst useless, just for references. he doesnt use any of the formulas in the book, only simplified ones he tells you in the lecture. pretty easy, got an A and i dont like math.
well he says that attendence is mandatory but it really isnt his class is intersting but since he is monotone it gets boring. all you have is a project and a final everyone gets an A on the project but the final almost no one passes.
Very good professor. I took his class online. He is very specifc as to what will be on the exams. Only have to worry about 3 exams and all the material comes from the lectures. Hardly use the book, only referenced one page. Highly recommend taking class online.
Must watch the lecture videos!! Most of the test are from videos, read the book before you watch it helps clarify alot!! Find a study group to study and take the test with! You'll do great that way~ Only 3 tests, glad I'm through with it.
Professor Douglas is awesome! This class is not as difficult as people make it out to be. The material covered in the lectures is boring at times but he is pretty humorous so it makes up for it. Just watch the lectures, take good notes, and review said notes prior to the test and you should do well. It's a challenge but that's college for you.
Worst Prof. I have ever had in my whole college career. He hates his students and refuses to help anyone. He tell you that the book in must then doesnt even test on any book material. I took him online durring the summer and had to drop. I begged him to help me so I wouldnt have to drop but it did no good. He told me he wouldnt help me.
Took this class over the summer. It was not that bad. I ended up with a B- though. First two tests were the hardest. The last test was a breeze. You must watch all lectures of you will not do very well in the class. You barely use the book. Minor math problems but tricky test questions. I am glad this class is over with!
Took this class online over the summer. You must watch every lecture to do well. Use the book as a reference. Math problems throughout the course. Tricky test questions. Hard to make an A but if you try, you will get a C or higher. 3 tests and no curve. Good luck and make sure you study before exams! Tests are multiple choice.
tests are very tricky. first two tests are awful and hard. math problems throughout the course. you dont really need the book but you must watch every lecture in its entirety to do well in the class. good luck because this class takes up a lot of time.
One of the hardest classes I've ever taken. I'm sure it didn't help that I took it online over summer though. However everytime I emailed him with a question he was not available to help. He would respond with things like, "It should be obvious." I don't even get why he is getting paid by UH. To do what? Sit back and ignore his students? Good luck!
Difficult class. Tricky test questions and if you take his online class, you must watch every lecture! Spend a good 6 hours a day studying for this class and maybe you can get a B. Best of luck!
This class sucks take psyc 3301 and petition for it!
No way you will ever guess what his exam questions will be. I transcribed his lectures and he still asks off the wall questions. He must dream up difficult ways to ask a question. Then he gives options like: a and c; b and d; all of the above. None of the above. I'll never take him again. I'm an A student but only got a B in this class.
watch every single lecture and skim over the book. if you study and watch every single lecture, you should earn no less than a c+. not an easy A by any means but a b- or b is possible. spend a lot of time with this class or you will not do well. good luck !!!!
Online class with videos recorded from at least 4 years ago. You never have to go on campus and only interact with him by email if you have a question. There are 3 tests that are 60 minutes and range from 30 to 23 questions. You take them on Blackboard. I am not a math person so I had to work my butt off for my A-.
Not as hard as everyone makes it out to be. He is very clear on what is required and as long as you watch all the lectures and look over your work you should do ok. I took the mini summer class. The 3 test are the only grades but you take them at home.
ok professor. Must watch every lecture if you want a C or above. Must study for exams. Books is pretty useless! Good luck with this class!
Honestly, this has been the hardest class I've taken. His exams are extremely difficult! Avoid taking him if possible.
Easy A, just form a study group, watch the lectures, and take the tests together in a group. I don't see how people fail this class, it's impossible!!!! Lectures might be outdated but they're still interesting enough to keep your attention, just watch the lectures, read the chapters, you'll do fine.
honestly if you watch the lectures and take good notes, understand the assignments and solutions before going into the test, you will do well. You have to watch the lectures and understand the steps that he goes through. If you do this, you cant help but get an A in the class.
If you want to fail, lower your GPA, get yelled at, get embarrassed or want a stressful semester then take this class!! If you ask him questions he will get offended or sound irritated which will make you feel as if your doing something wrong, he's rude & extremely hard. He brings his personal problems to class. DON'T TAKE HIM!
I took two classes with him last semester: COMM 4338 and 4334. Made A's in both, didn't read the textbooks, just skimmed them through when writing essays. But you MUST take notes, follow instructions for exams exactly as stated in syllabus! He expects your undivided attention during lectures. Overall, he's a cool prof, would take his classes again.
This class sucks. He only offers it online now, and is the only teacher. It's a difficult class, but if you form a group you will be fine. However, he is a useless teacher. Never helps or cares about how you are doing. I worked my butt off and got a C.
SO HARD!! The book is impossible to follow and he doesn't explain how to do the problems. If you have to take him get a tutor!
I did not know what to expect for this class. I had this professor for stats (online) and did miserably, so what a relief it was totake this class! Lectures were fun, easy grades, research project (no paper to write) and an easy take home exam. Watched old TV shows and discussed them. TAKE NOTES! Great GPA booster!
You don't even need the book. Everything he tests on is on his lectures. I took it online and although it may be difficult for some.... Just watch the lectures and take notes. He spells out everything word for word BUT he only has THREE tests.. that's it. Good luck =)
Don't read the book. Listen to the lectures. His tests are a bit tricky, but if you pay close attention you'll be fine.
This class is not easy, but if you apply yourself you will do fine. You really need to partner up with classmates to discuss his lectures. I really didnt use the book. There is only 3 test, no EC. He does help you when you ask for questions via email, just dont ask stupid ones. Good luck in this class.
Okay so here goes. The book is not needed because it is very hard to understand. If you feel like you must get the book you can get it online at coursesmart. I am an A students and this was the first exam I failed in college (have 6 years under my belt). I made a 56 on Exam 1 after reading all the material and watching lectures. The lectures
The lectures are a must. A lot of people said they got a copy of the previous exams and they made an A in the course. I've heard that a lot of Comm. majors have the copies so ask around and save yourself a lot of time. The professor does not respond to emails. I would suggest commenting on youtube videos to make a study group. Or ask him to
Or ask him to open the discussion board. He does curve. I made a 56 and that was a D+. I had a D+, A+, and A+ which averaged out to a B+ so he does add a slight curve at the end. A lot of the material he covers you cannot read what he writes on the board because the lectures were recorded years ago. His exams are multiple choice and
His exams are multiple choice and 33 questions, 24 questions, 25 questions. He says each exam is worth 7 points and the total for the class is 21 points. This is not true and it is not accurate to try and calculate your grade that way. I've heard with the previous exams they will help you pass then you need common sense. Good luck!
Textbook is useless; the handouts you need can be found through other sources (Google). Youtube lectures aren't clear; you literally can't see what he writes. He takes an hr to explain things someone can easily explain in 5 mins. Takes all the notes possible though. Study groups A MUST. I was able to pass with B+ (as a typical A student).
The tests are tricky, i finally made a B- on the third test. His lectures go on for ever and he ends up finally solving the problems on the last 15 of class. This was my first C+ class. It was one of the worst. The teacher himself is nice but the class is tough.
I dropped him the first semester, took with a study group the second go around. Our tests had a technical failure, after being pushed back at the last minute. Not horrible, but research how to pass the class before you jump head first into it. 3 tests with a tiny curve at the end.
Really easy class. Took it this semester as an online class, and really didnt know what to expect. 3 tests all online that you can take at home. Got an A on the first one and B on the 2nd one. Try and get a study group. Don't really need the book. Easy class if you follow the lectures and take notes.
1st test was easy but it went downhill from there. I wish I had just dropped the class instead of thinking it would get easier.
I was really nervous about taking the online research methods class. First, because I'm terrible at math. Second, because I heard it was hard. But I absolutely loved it. I found his lectures more engaging than any face-to-face class I've taken. As long as you watch all the lectures online and study the supplements that he puts on blackboard? Golden
I'll admit I am terrible at math but even with a tudor this class was too hard for me. I am typically an A student with the occasional B and this class messed up my GPA. His lectures are long/boring/difficult to follow. His testing is ridiculous and the book is useless. Do not take this class unless you are a serious masochist.
This is a HARD class! NO curve. 3 tests only. Tests are tricky & forget e-mailing him; he's useless! Non-compassionate! A family member of mine is battling cancer at it's worst. I gave it my all in his class & he just simply won't care. 3 pts from a C & would not give me a chance to earn it. If possible, wait till Spring & take Lee! He is the best
This class was very interesting and the prof was kind to me. He is old school because he only lectured without PowerPoint. He grades harshly on attendance and does not like when students are late/leave early. Our final was take home with the majority of questions taken from the lecture, not the textbook. He grades easily if you show up and do work.
This is my second time taking Dr Douglas. Everyone says how difficult he is but he's really not. All he asks is that you answer the questions directly. Regurgitate information. It's really simple. Don't be scared of what people say about him, listen to what he wants from you...and then just do it. Only had two assignments. Just take notes. Done.
Comm in the Fam.> Douglas is a pleasant enough fellow, but he drones on making the class seem endless and note-taking frustrating. We had 1 in-class presentation and 1 take home final. My advice is to record each lecture, then while working the final at home, playback each lecture at 2x speed and repeat what he says verbatim or suffer. Save rec.
This class was very easy for me. I know it wasn't for other people. My only gripe about this class was the lectures because the students in the recordings wouldn't speak up causing the lectures to drone on. But the Prof Doulas was easy to understand. I wish I was able to take his class in person.
This class was easy for me. The lectures are pretty straightforward online. This class is not rocket science. He has three tests. I believe he did curve a little at the end of the year. My biggest word of advice is to form study groups at the beginning of the semester. Old tests can be found for his class which helps you understand how hell test.
This class has been the most awful class of my undergrad. There is only 3 exams, no other assignments. The lectures are all outdated and look as if their from 1980. The examples are unclear. You will fail unless you join a "study" group , especially on test day. ;)The only pro of the course is that exams can be taken on any computer.
He is not a very helpful professor. He just posts lectures and gives you practice assignments to do on your own. Definitely form a study group and definitely find copies of old tests. These will help. Find different versions of them. He has the same questions. Don't buy the book
Literally hated this class. He's the only professor to take, but he is no help. He won't meet with you because he only teaches online classes and honestly the only way to pass is to "study" in groups. GOOD LUCK!!
Very hard class! he won't meet with you because he only teaches online and he is the ONLY professor available for this class! so if you need to take it, then be ready and make sure you form a STUDY GROUP! find test from previous semesters they will help! Good luck.
I don't recommend him. The work out problems on his exams are the same as the ones in his lectures so know how to do those, but he tries to trick you with word problems. And look for some people with old tests because they're floating around. Also if you try to email him with questions he'll just tell you to watch the lectures. Very unhelpful.
I read the reviews on here and awaited the worst, but was pleasantly surprised! It was incredibly boring at first, but if you speed up his lectures by 2, it gets your attention! I didn't join a study group, and I made a C and then two As. He is good at providing real-world examples. Do the assignments & take note of stuff he emphasizes
As long as you pay attention in class you'll do fine, great class!
This class is ridiculous and should not be online. His lectures are very math based and statistics related, but his tests are mainly word problems and they are tricky. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. Watch the lectures, take notes, look for old tests, and DEFINITELY get a study group. Don't take this class lightly.
His lectures are long and boring. I am biased against professors that are not clear about what you should study and remember. His tests are what you would not expect, it's almost like he wants you to fail. If you are in COMM check with your advisor, you can take PSYC 3301 to fulfill this degree requirement instead of 2300!!! Don't take this!
This was a tough class, but by no means is he a bad professor. The videos used online were created in 2008. The University mandated that this class be taught this way. Do not blame the professor. He is more than willing to help if you ask him questions. I would not recommend this class, but not because of Prof. Douglas. Study groups help a lot!!!!!
Dr. Douglas is an awesome teacher! He is very clear in his lectures and demands respect in the classroom. I learned a lot in this class. It hanged the way I view Sex, Love, and Romance in movies, but also in life. There is a group project and a final exam. Trust me, you want to take this class. It is stress free, entertaining, and worth your time.
I took this class online this past semester and it was definitely one of my harder classes. Make sure to watch his lectures and to take notes. The textbook was no help. The assignment examples he gave had nothing to do with the test and were basically useless. Even though the tests are tricky, if you watch the lectures & study, you should be fine!
Dr. Douglas is really great in classes outside of research methods. Comm. 4334 was one of my favorite courses that I've taken in my time at UH. You watch a selection of great films, and have a group project, and essay. Take this class!
3 Tests that's it. Online instructional videos are there to help you. Study groups are needed in order to understand the material more.
Great class. Watch movies in class and have discussions. One group assignment for 40% of grade and take-home final for 60% of grade. Easy A and easy to enjoy. Not a blow-off class, but easier to manage with heavy course loads. I would definitely take him again. Takes attendance, but he kind of slacks off towards the middle and end of semester.
I do not recommend this class. If required to take here's how to make an A or B. Get the book, its cheap and you need it for the test. Watch the lectures and take meticulous notes. There are duplicate numbered lectures on Youtube, but different lectures. Make sure you are watching the correct ones! Paste directly from BB! Professor not engaging.
No assignments, only 3 tests. Each test is worth 13 of your grade. Lectures are long, boring, and confusing. If this class wasn't optional, I would not have taken it. This more like a statistics class and has barely anything to do with communication. Run now if you can....
He's literally the most chill professor you will ever have. One group project and one take home test. We watched like 4 movies in class. Super easy. Take this class. You definitely won't regret it. Also, attendance isn't mandatory
Dr. Douglas is an interesting man. He can definitely get off track during some of his lectures, but he honestly cares about the subject matter at hand and is a great lecturer. Most of his classes (as was the case in mine) require a group project and an essay-based exam. Most material is covered in class, so you need to attend regularly.
If you don't get in "study" groups on test days, you will not pass. Groups are essential. This is such a waste of a class. Why UH requires it for Comm students beats me, it makes zero sense. I'm a print journalism major, I will NEVER use this in my career. It is essentially a math class.
I has such high hopes for this class. I read the book, did the assignments, and studied like crazy just to barely scrape by with a C (I've never gotten anything but A's.) I never knew what I was doing wrong, and he wouldn't meet with me in person to help me. I think it'd be a tough class anyway, but I wish he'd been there for me more.
Horrible class & prof. It is 100% math & mandatory for all Comm majors. If you email him a question he just says to watch the lectures. Final grade is only made up of 3 exams. Ask around for copies of old tests, get a study study group on day 1, & get ready for the worst class of your life. Good luck.
JOIN A STUDY GROUP BEFORE THE FIRST TEST! STAY IN THIS GROUP FOR ALL TESTS! This is the only way to pass this class! It's more like a statistics class.
He's an awesome prof. This was the easiest class I had & really fun. Just watching movies all semester, 1 group project & a take home exam. He's a funny guy & very chill. I HATE he's retiring. I would take him for every class if I could.
If you want it to be perfectly clear what you need to learn in order to succeed in STP420 take his class. He goes over almost every slide from the STP420 slide deck in detail. The tests will usually have a problem or parts that require conceptual understanding rather than calculator knowledge. Experienced professor.
