Awesome guy!

I took it online it was so easy all you had to do was go to the marsee auditorium shows and write on it. He is very nice.
I took it online It was very easy you don't have to read or anything just go to a few performances and then take two test
I took him a few years back, I have a new appreciation for music
GREAT TEACHER
Online course is easy!
very easy and stirs up your interest in music. definately take him.
Beware the online class Tests are impossibly hard; he expects you to know information that a lot of music majors wouldnt even know His book is poorly written and has no index or glossary so its impossible to find anything
he might be a great teacher, but online course is awful. tests are hard. if you can take the regular class, you should take it. online course is NOT easy as you may think.
great music interest, very passionate about his job, excellent study abroad program.
fun class for 7:40 in the morning.
Easy A
A great musican, and conductor. Infinatly helpfull and a good guy. He even rock climbs. His mus 11 class is excelent as well. Good book.
Test are hard but if you do the extra credit and the other assignments you will be in good shape! Makes music interesting i must say!
this prof. really cares about his students, especially if he gets to know them more personally. his class is really easy, straight-forward, and he has a great sense of humor. it's admirable to see his love and knowledge for music and culture.
It's easy on the theory part, but it's hard on the listening part because no one teaches you how to listen to the music. 4 concert reviews, 1 midterm & 1 final. It's easy to pass, but it's hard to get an A due to the listening part.
a lovely teacher I've ever seen in ECC, nice, funny, helpful. tests are very very easy and open book too. I got an "A". just highlight what he said in class, then u will get the answer from the book directly.
Great class!Fun & not that boring. tests Open Book!
MR. DOYLE IS A VERY NICE TEACHER. I LOVE MUSIC AND HIS CLASS IS AN EXCELLENT MUSIC CLASS
Great teacher! VERY easy online class. The listening part is a bit tricky, but not impossible. He is a great person also!
I really enjoyed his class, he is a great and entertaining teacher. I thought his class was going to be easier then it was, but i worked hard and got an A. There are fun assignments, a midterm, and final that has listening and essay portions. I recommend this teacher you will not be dissapointed.
Dr. Doyle is funny and a nice guy. He's got a fabulous singing voice! He really cares about the students and I love working with him.
One of coolest teacher ver had. His tests and the concert reviews are really easy. Nice prof., you should take him.
Really cool professor. i thought he was just OK! but really he is nice, willing to help and just has so much passion for what he's teaching and his students. class was easy -- he's very informal, laid back and cool. Fun assignments in class. You'll definitely enjoy the class.
I love how this teacher is so passionate about what he's teaching. It's contagious. And he's so passionate about traveling and really steping out of the learning in a classroom. So awesome.
very good teacher, very passionate about music. gets a little irritated if ur not tho. 4 concert reviews, 1 mid, 1 final. all very easy. its all open book so theres not ****in if u dont pass.
Incredible man. Very knowledeable. write his own text book. it's not expensice and it's well written. very exciting class. good clips on powerpoint and on video clips. plays lots of music in class. his lectures are very cool and he always tells you EXACTLY what to study for tests. Gets irritated if you're late but he's cool!
I could not love a teacher more. This man is amazingly awesome. He is so into what he does, and the midterm and final are open book. I forgot to get the cd for one final, and I still got 92% on the test. He allows you to attend a wide variety of performances for the concert requirements. Dr. Doyle, I love you!!! You rock!!!
pretty hot teacher and very easy going
One of the best teachers you will ever have. He is SO interesting and you won't be bored. He could make you interested in spam. Very easy, but most importantly he is fun and you learn something and walk out of the classroom more interested in music. Dr. Doyle is awesome, and I don't know anybody who disagrees with that statement.
Dr. Doyle is one of the best professors at ECC. He's very passionate about music, and is very helpful. He loves traveling, which gives amazing insight into music, Watch out tho! He pushes his Europe trip on his students 24/7!
Easy online class! Go to 3 concerts (paid by school) review them, open book non timed final, elementary dear watson!
BEST teacher ever
It's a very fun class, and Doyle's awesome. You'll love it.
remember the cruise we took in 2000, that was the bomb...
Seriously best teacher ever.....u can not possibly fail this class....he always has something to make the class interesting
pro: passionate about musicology. well knowledged and informed. master music geek w/ great presentations using audio & video in lecture. detests liars, cheaters, and plagerism. con: 7:40am class. loathes tardiness. assignments due as posted or he won't accept. one of the best music classes i've ever taken, period... if you can wake up & stay awake.
When I graduated form ECC they asked who my favorite teacher was... Definately Mr. Doyle. Honest, straight forward, fun teacher who taught you without boring you out of your mind. Near impossible to fail if you try... Easy to pass if you actually do the assignments.
Fun teacher with fairly easy tests. He really gets you interested in the subject! What a rad dude.
He is a great guy. He has to be the best Music 11 professor in this school. Don't bother trying to take anyone else, just take Dr. Doyle.
I didn't like this class. I like music, but I found the text (which Doyle wrote) unorganized and vague. I also thought he didn't have much interest in his students-maybe because it was an online class. He responded quickly to emails and seems enthusiastic about music, but I don't feel like I learned anything. Easy class to pass though.
passionate about musicology. well knowledged and informed. I like him so much!!! Highly recommend~~~~
Doyle is super cool! We went to Australia. He is seriously a really cool guy, really nice and gives you the chance to succeed in his class. He is funny too. I recommend him.
He is a great professor. Very funny and made the class more interesting. If you can fit his class into your schedule, do it! You will really like his class.
I absolutely reccomend this class! He is such an awesome teacher! This was the only class I ever looked forward to! Makes everything interesting, and always cracks jokes! Even the way he takes attendence is fun! He has an online class...DON'T TAKE IT! Take his class live!
dr. doyle has sexy hands.
Great online class. Very clear and organized course. Actually very fun too! If you don't get an A in this course the future doesn't look bright for you.
Took him over winter for the Australia/New Zealand and I had the BEST TIME! He was an awesome teacher that made the material fun, interesting, and easy to learn. He is a cool guy to just talk to even outside the class!
Dr. Doyle is the best professor in ECC. You must take him. I assure you that you will learn so much about music and its history. He is so funny that by the end of his lecture, your stomache will start aching. On top of that, he gives you an easy 'A'. He's the best.
HE'S FRICKEN FUN, MAN! I LOVE THIS GUY! PASSED WITH A B BUT THAT'S ONLY CAUSE I DIDNT TURN IN 1 CONCERT REVIEW. IT WAS MY FAULT. BUT HONESTLY, WILL DOYLE IS VERY EASY. GUARANTEE TO LEARN SOMETHING POSITIVE AND FUN!
Excellent teacher! Not a lot of pressure, but you will learn.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!! Class was so fun. he brought in instruments from all over and let us play with them!! Clear and Concise... really good teacher!
Best teacher I've ever had at ECC. His favorite magician is David Blane.
GREAT TEACHER! A couple ppl rated poor, said his book is vauge...the book goes over everything on the tests!!! some said they didnt learn...then they already knew about the subject!!! This class is way fun, you learn but its not hard! Doyle is funny and easy to talk to! TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Great teacher- made me fall in love with classical music, learned a lot- to pass just need to work the study guide- memorize terms, etc. Best class i took at elco
Awesome teacher!! I'm sooo glad I took him. He's very interesting and excited about music. DON'T MAKE THE MISTAKE OF NOT TAKING HIS CLASS!!!
MR. DOYLE IS AWESOME! I dont think words can describe how bad a decision it would be to NOT take this class. You will learn alot, appreciate music and just have fun. He really is a cool guy. And plus its really easy. TAKE IT =) You wont regret it! promise!
Easy class. I got an A although I didn't even purchase the book. It's a fun class. EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE THIS PROFESSOR in any class.
he's an amazing teacher! everyone should take him. he has tons of funny jokes and makes classical music interesting
this guy isnt as good as everyone makes him out to be. you have to have a good ear for music to do well on tests. he isnt clear on a lot of things. class is based on watching videos all the time. 1st test is based on all listening and identifying what is in the music(tempo, meter, texture, harmony etc) isnt as easy as ppl think.
" Thinks he is God's gift to music" I recieved an "A" but his lectures are Dull.Have to attend his pointless and boring concerts and buy his books that you dont need. Test are not difficult but you have to study.
I think the people below never really studied for anything. His tests are not EASY, but you have to ask him QUESTIONS! He's very helpful and really wants you to do well. He really knows what he's talking about, and I really learned a lot from his class. I would recommend this class to anyone.
I liked this class. The tests are hard but if you do the concert reviews (you have to go to 3) and do the extra credit you can get an A easily.
AWESOME Professor! It is easy if you listen and ask questions! the more you put into the class the more you will get out of it! take this class! you will learn a lot! and he makes it FUN!
Typical Boring professor. Tells a couple lame jokes once in a while. His concerts and lectures are boring. And he is not that good at conducting.
I passed but typical boring teacher. Makes lame jokes quite often. Some are rather offensive to female students. Concerts are boring and he makes for a poor musical conductor.
Took the winter session internet class. Pretty straight foward. 3 concerts, short reveiws, final is ok, music part is tricky. Not a bad choice, take it.
Easy A. Teacher is rather conceeded and concerts are mandatory unfortunately. Beware he is a USC reject.
im so surprised at the last few comments! his class is not only interesting, but as long as you show up and do 3 easy concert reviews, you should be able to get an easy A. i never studied and got an A just by paying attention in class. hes truly passionate about the class so he makes in interesting for the student. oh and hes hot :)
Online tests were directly from the text book, music listening parts a little difficult. Got B's on both of my exams, but still got an A in the class. Turn in all the work and attend concerts (plus extra credit) and get an easy A. Follow the syllabus to get an easy A
Loved his class! Funny and loves what he does. You have to study to pass his test and listen to the music in advance and you will be fine!
I have known Dr. D. for years, and he is deff. not conceited! I don't know why people seem to think that. knows so much about music and is way better than many i have had. Stop being so grade-oriented, get to know him, and you'll do great. awesome guy!
He is a really great guy! Passionate about what he does and just amazing :)I'm in his orchestra and we're going on a trip this summer... I love him and he is really chill
Strictly a class where you read and learn on your own. I don't believe I have ever talked to Professor Doyle during the online class, but if you read the books and attending the 3 concerts, you can't help but get an A in this class.
Mr. Doyle is a great teacher. He knows his music and knows how to teach a class. You have to work in his class. He makes everything so easy because he has a creative style of teaching students. He cares about his students and is a very confident man. Mr. Doyle is the man. I wish I had him every semester. I will miss Doyle.
Fair amount of work. 3 tests, plus the midterm, and the final. It is necessary to read the book! Out of the three concerts I attended, I must say the Ars Nova Sinfonia, conducted by Professor Doyle, was my FAVORITE!
Took Doyles online Music Appreciation class, I have got to say it was pretty dang easy. No HW or listening to music, there are a few tests along the way & you will have to attend 3 music concerts, but its an easy class!
his online class is fairly easy. no homework, just 3 concert reviews. definitely read the book before taking the tests, you won't do well if you don't read. a passable course for sure.
Online class is superr ez..seriously i jst did da 3concert assignment as any work...tests are fair read da bk dats all u need, if u need to feel up schedule 2 make full time this is definitely a class 4 u..plus Teacher is very approachable n knows his music u can tell by readin da bk he wrote it himself.
Excellent teacher! Was the most interesting class because of his style. If you're doing poorly in the class or need help, he's very good at helping you in any way he can. I never felt bad about asking questions or for help. Just make sure you don't miss class and if you're going to be late/gone, CALL AHEAD to him or have another student tell him.
Dr.Doyle is an amazing professor, besides that he explains really good, he is pretty fun and funny. His comments and Videos are always of great help to the class.
Music 12 is the Honors class and I was a little scared at first because I had no interest in music and it being Honors I knew it would be a little harder than the norm, but oh was I wrong. This class was amazing! So much fun, I looked forward to going every time. Dr. Doyle is so smart, funny and friendly.TAKE this class! New appreciation for music!
i took his online class, & it was the easiest one i took. There's an assignment due every week, which is fairly easy: a para. answering the question based on the reading. You have to attend 3 concerts, and it's due near the end of the semester. I actually enjoyed the concerts! One of them which he was in. He seems like a cool guy, TAKE HIS CLASS!!
Great teacher! He really is passionate about music and shows his passion when teaching. I felt more interested then I thought I would be. He really helps and gives extra credit and extra activities to boost your grade.
3 tests, 1 term project, 3 concert reviews, and extra concert review for EC. Doyle is awesome and loves what he teaches, great class. Only thing you have to do is study A LOT for his tests. Many questions that are not touched on in the lecture. Honors class and avg test score was D/C. But due to term proj and concert reviews it helps grade.
He's a great teacher and he makes the subject interesting. He made me like music but there's mandatory concerts, and they were loooong.
Easy online class that you actually learn something. Do the weekly assignments, go to the concerts to fill in your response sheets and cruise to an easy grade. Tests online are open book and you have 24 hours to complete but finding some of the answers took longer than I thought... Recommend Dr Doyle
Easy online class! There are short and EASY weekly discussions. Only three tests. One exam, midterm, final. A little hard but the answers are in his book. Take this class easy a!
I took his online class. Very easy. 100 pt final, 100 pt midterm, 50 pt test, (all three directly from book), 3 Concert reviews cumulatively 100pt, 10pt music discussion every week (150 pts total) and 10 pt extra credit quiz. Everything is very easy. Take him, you'll learn and boost your GPA.
There is nothing negative to say about Dr. Doyle! he is very passionate about teaching. and it shows! hes very motivating and he wants you to succeed in his class and life in general! Loved his class! loved it so much im taking him again next semester
He is awesome! plays loony tunes and world music instruments are cool.
Cool professor; music aficionado. BUT, you must attend 3 $concerts$ and write corespondent reviews. We also exchanged our favorite music with 4 classmates, then wrote a paper about it. Lastly, we had 3 tests, and boy were they hard. Had to listen to music and answer tough questions about it. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this class.
If you could endure the almost-3-hour-long-boring-concerts, I guarantee you`ll get an A.easily ,and buying his textbook is recommended. you don`t need to study the book seriously.because it`s openbook test.you can search the google while taking test.If you unnecessarily studied the text, you couldn`t remember anything on the test day.
Thank u mr.Doyle..Ive come to love music because of you!!
He is a very nice, very helpful, very joyful and very good professor! He is the best!!
This class was hard! We had 3 exams and a term project. There's a lot of reading involved to fully understand the material, as well as listening. Many of the cultures' songs sounded similar, so it was hard to differentiate. The listening portion on each test hurt me. The 2nd test was so hard that the highest grade was a 78%. Take music 11.
My favorite teacher ever...he really cares about his student and very helpful.if u study and listen to the music which he assigned u will get easy A ..he is a great teache take his class.
Show up to every class and never be late! Actually study and you'll do just fine in his class.
Best teacher at elco. effin love this guy. nothing but helpful and oh so clearly passionate. He's a good man. take him!!
Dr. Doyle is a great and knowledgeable teacher who loves music, but this class is not an easy A. If you're not a music major, don't take it. You WILL spend most of your studying time listening to the music, but that doesn't mean you should ignore the book reading and going over class notes. You don't want to miss a lecture either. Study hard!
This class will hold your interest for the semester, and I guarantee that you'll walk away knowing something new. The tests aren't too bad, but the notes he gives are a little disorganized. It's hard to know exactly what to study sometimes, but it's not difficult to pass if you spend some time studying before the tests.
I will always remember Music 12 as one of my favorite classes during my time at Elco. Dr. Doyle is so passionate about what he teaches. For an honors class, it really isn't difficult at all; the tests are multiple choice, and the concert reviews are easy points. If you love music, you will love going to this class everyday!
Had him for his first Music of the Beatles class, he's so amazing and funny! Love him and the class! It's a class on the Beatles, what's not to like? Really interesting and fun!
Prof. Doyles online music 11 class is super easy, weekly discussions take 10 minutes tops, the tests, however, are brutal. It took me about 2-3 hours for the midterm and final because you have to spend time searching for each answer in the textbook. There are 3 concerts you must attend, but they were enjoyable. Easy A IF you don't miss deadlines.
A class worth taking. Loved it. He's great aswell.
Professor Doyle is awesome, I took his online music class and I seriously developed an interest in classical music. Easy A if you do the work, he is always updating the site and answers questions quickly. You get to attend 3 musical concerts all at El Co and earn credit for writing reports on them, it was awesome!
took his class because I needed it to transfer. loved it so much I signed up for him again. AMAZING super kind and wants his students to do well. just don't be an idiot and act mature. he hates it if you take his class as a joke, if your there listen and participate and he'll do his best to make sure you get an A
I took his Music Honors class, and I thought that it was very hard and difficult and I ended up dropping the class with a W. I always studied for his class but I always got an F. On the first test there were no A's at all and only 2 B's. I learned a lot but the tests has a lot of curve balls, so beware.
Took him for Music of The Beatles. Very cool professor. Great sense of humor too. Often refers to himself as the 5th Beatle. You basically listen to a Beatles album every week and write about your favorite song for homework. Two fun papers. Cancels final if the entire class does a good job on the second paper. Take him already!
Got a C because I was focused more on my Math 150 class but getting an A is easy. Each test you have to remember about 30-50 songs. for the 2nd part its a 25 multiple choice test all worth 100 total. Must do 4 concert reviews ($10-$15). Weekly journal & that's it. Fun/interesting class. I would take him again. Helpful BUT little extra credit offered
Best and most interesting class taken so far because I love all types of music and learned about many culture customs and types of music that ordinarily would not have listened to. Fantastic teach with high energy. Looked forward to this class.
Best class taken so far because very interested in music. I learned many cultures of music and customs that ordinarily would not have known. Great teacher, very high energy. Broadened my interest in music and would take another of his music classes.
Online. Extremely Easy! If you fail, well you will need to check yourself.
This class is so interesting and makes the 3 hour lecture worth attending. Quizzes are hard if you don't study. Only once a week
I'm taking his "Music of The Beatles" class. IT IS BY FAR THE BEST CLASS I'VE EVER TAKEN. I'm always so excited to go to that class, and I usually hate going to class. He gives a quiz every other week, not that hard. Homework is easy and almost no class work, just take notes watching interesting stuff about The Beatles! I LOVE THIS CLASS. Like bruh
Dr. Doyle is an entertainer, teacher, and Beatles maniac. If you take this class you will enjoy it, 2 tests, and 2-3 short essays about songs and albums. their simple. Don't fall asleep, his class is in the afternoon and THREE hour long, BUT he makes it very enjoyable. It is very much like a history class, a history class of The Beatles! Recommend!
Test questions are often unclear. The music examples are too subjective. For example, in one piece violins and oboes are both taking the lead, but there is no answer for both. His text book is also jumbled and unclear, and is very eurocentric even though it is titled "musical voyages."
Dr. Doyle is an AMAZING professor. His classes are very interesting. You honestly learn so much from this class. As long as you pay attention, you will be fine. He gave us a cheat sheet for the music we have to memorize for the listening part of the test. Getting an A should be a breeze if you do your work ( I'm in HTP)
Your grade is 4 tests (usually half listening portion using a cheat sheet and MC of general lecture notes), 3 ECC music concert reviews (easy template provided), and a term project that is actually just writing a short paragraph about your favorite song each week. Easy and interesting class if you listen to lectures and take good notes
3 question assignment once a week to listen to a clip and answer questions. only 2 tests, mid-term and final. Have to attend 3 concerts and do a small review. extremely easy. easy A.
He's an amazing professor! He's really nice as long as you show that you care about the class and put effort into it. Not hard to get an A!
Took this online class and it was not bad. Weekly online group discussions, the book is basically the weekly homework and was not bad at all. Go to 3 concerts and fill out a summary about it (not a paper) and you'll get an A! Good understanding professor who encourages his students to learn.
Simply put, DR Doyle is the best! Take him!
I LOVE DR. DOYLE! This class was THE BEST class I have ever taken. This class & his lectures broadened my horizon in the world, music, & art. He makes it so much fun & is always energized! You will have no regrets if you take him. As long as you pay attention, look over study guide, & listen to music, getting an A will be a piece of cake
I'm fortunate to have taken a class just focused on the Beatles, I loved it! Met once a week, lecture was lengthy but overall great material I'll keep with me for life.
Took music of the Beatles and it was pretty easy. I did all the assignments and did fairly well on them. He doesn't like it when people ditch and that is the reason I received a B in his class.
MUSIC OF THE BEATLES! Take his class! I now love the Beatles more than I ever have thanks to Dr. Doyle! Show up to class, LISTEN to his lectures, LISTEN to the music, and you will do just fine! Oh, make sure to color your journal, easy points!
Dr. Doyle is amazing! He's course is life changing. He exposes you to a new world honestly. Music is so powerful in ways you never knew! Yes you listen to a bunch of classical music but go in with an open mind! He is funny, inspiring, and brings the music to life. Keep up w/ the reading you'll pass. 4 exams & 3 concert reviews
Easiest online class I've ever take. Every week you must answer 3 questions after you watch a music video and respond to 3 students. 10 points for each assignment even if you get the answers wrong. A total of 3 or 4 tests. Must attend 3 musical performance and write an easy 10 question paper on them. Easy grader. Awesome class.
Doyle is a fantastic professor and loves what he does. MUSC111 was a lot of fun and I would take it again. He wrote and uses his own textbook which is helpful and lectures are clear with a lot of cool videos to watch. Be aware his tests are very tough and require you to really understand a chapter, other than that it should be an easy A.
The online class was easy.
Dr. Doyle is good at what he does but he makes the tests really hard. His tests are from his lecture slides, his textbook, and his travelogue. Really hard class it was fun. Don't think you can get away with not studying. Also don't be late he hates it!
Everything is given to you on the first day so you know exactly what you need to do. Easy A, great professor!
Doyle is awesome. Study and really immerse yourself in the music and don't slack and you'll be fine. Don't take the quizzes for granted.
Dr. Doyle is great at what he does! I don't like the fact that the newest version of his book isn't accessible like the last version but it's ultimately his choice, better for getting students to buy the book. If you have a bit of musical background you won't necessarily need the book. His grading is VERY FAIR. His syllabus is also very clear.
He wants to make music seem like Calculus. It isn't and NEVER will be. He made desperate comments in class to make himself appear intelligent, and it was sad. If you didn't give into his stupid jokes, he was rude to you (like he was rude to me). I don't respect him, neither do I respect music. It's something I listen to in order to relax. PERIOD !!
i LOVE Dr. Doyle. I went to his office hours just to chat many times. however, if you're taking Music 112H thinking it will be an easy A of an honors class for HTP, you thought wrong. I studied very hard for this class, took elaborate notes, AND showed up to office hours and still managed to only receive a B :( his tests are insanely difficult.
If you're planning on taking his class as an elective do NOT waste your time doing so. He makes it seem like hes better than everyone, sarcastic and not funny. He cares so much about music he makes test impossible to pass. I recommend dance or art. Learned the hard way. I love music but this isnt a great way to learn about it.
He's very enthusiastic and nice! But, he does require you to buy his textbook he published. The tests are strange in the way that you'd think you would be tested primarily on the music but instead you're mainly tested on the country's culture and history facts. So, beware of that.
Dr Doyle was one of my favorite professors this semester. He's so passionate about music and always had great stories to share with us. When I first walked into class I was nervous that I wasn't going to do well, but that all changed when he started lecturing. There are a total of 3 tests, a final, 3 worksheets, and 3 concert reviews.
Definitely do not need the book! This was an amazing class although it has been the only class that I could not get an A in. Very fun teacher who is always prepared.
I love his class, he loves what he do, I highly recommend this class!!
AMAZING guy. He's very lenient -- although how you would miss an assignment for his class is strange, they're easy -- with assignments, and he is clear about what he wants on them. Enthusiastic guy, he cracks jokes and is approachable if you need help in the class at all. (Oh, and did I say IT'S A CLASS ABOUT THE BEATLES?! Take it already!)
Went in with pretty low expectations, and was still disappointed. Hardly learned anything because of all of his frantic and poorly-played attempts to be funny or "edgy". He puts a whole lot of emphasis on the discussion questions, and doesn't include them in his tests. I worked very hard for a very average grade. Don't bother studying too much.
Dr. Doyle's music appreciation class is a solid choice for covering a general education requirement. I took the honors section (which focuses more on world music) and it wasn't much more difficult than a regular class. You will also discover new music; there is something for everyone. Beware of his exams- study well and listen to the music.
Amazing Professor. He explains everything clearly. He is sarcastic and a character. Doyle brings the lecture to life. Attendance is mandatory. If you missed three day of class without notice, he will drop you from the course. There are three concert reviews to attend and four exams to take. NO MIDTERM & FINAL. Ask questions to clarify.
Dr. Doyle is passionate about music/travel & it shows. His lectures are never boring. He is discussion heavy and really wants you to understand the music. We heard a lot of great music in this class. This is not an "easy A" course at all! Tests are challenging and require understanding the discussions as well as the music, but you will have fun.
Although I did pass the class with an A, I totally struggled. His class has weekly assignments, and other than that, there were only 2 exams we had to take. The first one took me 3 hours, and I got a B (80%) on it. A tip for those taking the course online is to focus on all of the details, and even highlight then as you are reading your book.
The best Professor I ever Had! Take his class
Great teacher. Really great lectures. He is a hilarious teacher who loves what he does. This is reflected on his passion for teaching. Wish his class had more assignments so that 2/3rd of grade wasnt based on 4 quizzes. Overall, a great teacher and person.
You learn a lot about the different cultures from places Dr. Doyle has visited. Almost all of his lectures are based off of his travels. He has a great personality and his lectures are inspirational. However, his tests are RIDICULOUS. They are incredibly hard and random. You have to take copious notes from his lectures and then study his guides.
Highly recommend to take this class in-person (because he is a great professor), but online is just as good. He clearly states what to do/ what is needed to earn full credit. You do have to read the book, grasp the concepts, listen to the music, and be able to analyze it. But the forums, music, and reading are entertaining and engaging.
Very nice teacher, very easy class to follow. 3 concert reviews, one midterm, one final, weekly forum assignments. No EC. Just do all the work and you could easily end up with an A.
His lectures were amazing! He always shows videos and music pieces in class so we could really understand the information he presents. You need to do 3 concert reviews, 3 in-class worksheets, and there's 4 tests in total! Be sure to study the book for your tests! If you're lucky, he might give you extra credit! I recommend that you take him!!
Awesome professor! I enjoyed learning about the Beatles!
Literally the toughest grader. He said it in class that he rarely if ever gives students A's on the paper which is about 30% percent of our grade. He gives out a "study guide" for the exams, but it should be everything you don't have to study. Only 2 questions from the guide were on the exam. His lectures are amazing, but not worth it.
His lectures are amazing, but it is impossible to get an A in his class. He took all extra credit away and nothing from his study guide was on the test. He likes to act helpful and nice, but when it comes to exam day you realize he doesn't help at all. He also is not clear about what he wants on papers. His word choice on the prompt is misleading.
Maybe his regular classes are ok, but do not take his 112H class. For the exams you have to memorize about 80 songs and their origin most of which are just noises with no lyrics. Literally one or two out of the ten songs he played had lyrics. Also there was only question from the pre lecture discussions on the test.
Took him during the summer online for music 111. Had to do 7 discussions, one concert review and two tests (final and midterm). Doesn't seem like a lot, but the grades mostly come from the midterm and final. Tests get difficult because it is so detailed based on the book like he expects you to read every little detail in the textbook.
way too hard. takes himself too seriously. He puts random trivia questions on the test he does not even teach. You have to memorize about 100 songs and know how to spell them correctly for the test. Some of the song titles have exotic names that are impossible to spell. No extra credit. Worked so hard to get a B and i am an A student
Dr. Doyle is a great teacher! It's definitely not an easy class though- you have to listen to several songs & will be tested on them as well as general knowledge from lectures (test questions are pretty tough- read the Travelogue/book & take notes!!) If you come to class prepared, you'll have a better experience! :)
I took this class for an easy A since all of my others classes were either honors or really difficult, however, I made a poor choice. This is a great class if you love the Beatles, and the professor is nice, but it's extremely difficult. Your entire grade is pretty much based on 5 quizes. I studied about 8 hours per quiz and my average was a B-.
The only reason Im upset with this class is because it ended. He is one of the best professors Ive had, very inspiring. Youre graded on 5 quizzes 25 questions each. Theres also an easy weekly journal entry, and a paper. If you pay attention and go over the ppt notes before each exam, turn in paper and journal, youll pass with an A+. LOVED IT!
Professor Doyle is really caring and has tons of knowledge, I would definitely recommend this to any Beatles or Music fan. Pay attention during the lectures, take notes, study hard and you'll be good.
Interesting lectures but tests are hard. The study guide does not help.
112H Most enjoyable class I've taken & some of the best and most fascinating lectures. He is tough grader; tests make up majority of the grade. Almost no homework but need to use that time to study. Don't wait last minute to study. And you really don't want to skip out on lectures. Amazing professor who I have a lot of respect for.
Loved him for Music Appreciation. I actually looked forward to going to class because his lectures were so interesting. Dont be late and dont forget your textbook. Great professor.
He's so cool! Just write down every single detail mentioned in class, review it, and you'll be solid. Brings in world instruments to see in class. Have to do 3 concert reviewseasy. Tries to trick you on the multi choice part of tests. Just listen to the music ASAP, take super detailed notes, not too hard class.
If you are wondering whether or not to take music with The Beatles, please do. Beatles fan or not, the class is very easy and super interesting.
Took Music 111 online for Fall 2019, I must say that it was not complicated during the semester. Forum with 3 questions every week which posted monday at 9am and due by friday at 9am. No essays, just forums: LOVE IT! Only thing is that you MUST purchase his textbook in order to do well on exams (2 tests and final). Tests are not easy, but doable!!
One of the coolest and most caring professors I've ever had. He is really understanding and is more than willing to cooperate with his students. He understands that things happen so he will accommodate accordingly but he is also someone you can talk to. He has made my experience at El Camino College really amazing. We need more teachers like him.
Dr. D is the best prof ever! He is extremely kind and hilarious! Bummed out bc our time with him was cut short due to COVID-19 but his transition into online learning was seamless which was greatly appreciated! Super knowledgeable about the Beatles. Please take this class if you love the Beatles and would like to learn more! Dr. D is truly a gem!
Dr. Doyle is honestly my favorite teacher i have ever took in college! I had him for 4 classes and I enjoy the lectures so much!! I also love his beatles class as well and he made me a huge Beatle fan! If your thinking about taking him, I promise you you will enjoy it! Make sure to tell him that B sent ya lol!
From my experience in distance learning this professor is awesome. There's about 2-3 hours of lecture every week that you have to take notes for but its honestly pretty easy. Tests are a breeze if you take good notes. 4 tests for the entire semester and a big project at the end. I wish every teacher was like this.
He is strict about deadlines and wont let you submit a discussion or other assignment late. He posts all his course material on Dropbox, which was confusing at first, but now makes assignments easier. The lecture is formatted as a video of slides playing which includes musical examples. There is a separate lecture overview of him talking.
I took this class online during the pandemic. There is only one assignments per week, and you can finish in 10 minutes if you try. However, the tests are so unnecessarily hard. You have to really read and practically memorize the textbook he wrote (which is really expensive and only available in ElCo) or you won't pass the test.
What a fun class!!! I needed a music course and found this and got to learn so much history about music I already loved. Dr. Doyle's passion for the Beatles is obvious and reading his feedback on the discussion posts showed he cared about what our thoughts were. I very much enjoyed learning from him and highly recommend this course.
The class is overall interesting regardless of what your majoring in whether interested in music or not this class definitely has you engaged in it. The class isnt difficult as long as you do the readings and the work.
Hands down the best class I have ever taken. He is such a passionate person and really wants his students to feel the same. Best part of class was listening to the Beatles and see him jamming on the side to the music. Even if you aren't a Beatles fan, you will be by the end of the semester. Learned so much and lectures were never boring.
Professor Doyle is a good professor but you have to buy a specific textbook that he wrote himself and his test questions are picked from the most random details in his lectures so you have to read everything thoroughly. He makes his tests formatted so that once you click on an answer, you cant go back but overall if you like music then go for it.
Avoid. You have been warned. He forces you to buy his textbook and pulls the most insane details from it for his tests. This class destroyed my love of music. Online class is super disorganized and you constantly have to click around in Dropbox to find a clip. Big ego too, not approachable bordering on rude. Overall needlessly stressful. Stay away
Honestly, I love his class, but the only thing I strongly dislike is how his tests are formatted where its timed AND you cant go back to the question.
I took a Music class with Dr. Doyle way back in the nineties! I enjoyed every minute of it. This Professor has a love for music as do I. The only thing I regret is that I didn't get the chance to travel to Austria, birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. I had the pleasure of being introduced to classical music back in, well, when I was young.
i took this class based on the ratings but you get 4 exams and the rest are forums. It's a chill class with no lectures but his tests are so hard.
His tests are super picky in detail. Most of the questions are based on heavy reading and memorizing each audio track he provides is really tedious since the tests provide a small portion of it. Overall, really hard to work for that A if you mess up on one exam. Graded by a few assignments which almost makes it impossible to boost your grade.
This class was okay, he makes you buy an expensive $50 book he wrote. I didn't buy it and I did okay. His tests are shorts but worth a lot and they impact your grade more than anything. The forum assignments are super easy but won' raise you much. He doesn't give extra credit so he is not that understanding.
I loved this course so much, I thought it was equally interesting and easy, we don't have that much homework at all and the points are so easily made up. He clearly has put a lot of effort into this course and it was fun learning about the Beatles and having access to all his resources.
I took this class over the course of 6 weeks over the summer. This is very informational with all the readings and lectures. It required a lot of self/independent learning. Your grade mainly depends on the tests. In my case 50 points mid-term and final. Some discussion posts in between that don't really help with retaining the material or grade.
I've been a musician for over 25 years. I was looking forward to this class, but it was nothing like I expected to be. For the most part the professor does not lecture during the summer. It lacked lectures and or videos that could have enhanced student learning. What a complete disappointment. I would encourage you to find another class. Good luck.
Music 117 is a generally unique class. The professor is VERY well acquainted with information about The Beatles. He is a fan and we get to discuss what we like about some of their songs! There is a lot of reading and you have to listen to full albums. I got a B because the quizzes were tough, they were very much about the readings.
My FAVORITE professor by far. He was so passionate about music and I've never learned more from a course. I took two different courses just so I could take this professor again.
Took Dr. D for Summer. Freedom to turn in multiple assignments by end of the semester. Easy weekly discussion questions on Beatles music. Lots of reading online and 2-hour weekly videos to watch. No books to purchase. Passionate about his research and lectures.
I took his 111 course, it's really bad, his homework is not pretty much, but his exam questions are very difficult, he will let you buy a book he wrote as the textbook, and the question of the exam is very tricky. To be honest, if you don't read the scope of the exam carefully two or three times, you can't get a good score in the exam.
My favorite Professor ever! Dr. D.'s lectures were not only interesting but full of great info! The assignments are easy and he was very understanding when I had to turn in a couple of assignments late. He will work with you and help you as much as he can. When it comes to The Beatles he truly knows his stuff! Guaranteed to enjoy this class!
This class was not super difficult.Theres one assignment per week and its a simple one if you follow the directions. The class is consistent and straight forward. Just 2 tests multiple choice. Professor seems very passionate about this class and I think he just wants you to gain the sense of feeling and appreciation he has from this type of music.
Relatively straightforward class. Textbook required, no lectures at all. One homework assignment a week which can be done in no more than 10 minutes but the tests can be a hassle, especially the final. Everything is easy BUT the tests. Recommend those going into this class to really know the material for exams.
The professor and the class were amazing! Loved this class. A lot of work to be done. Not an easy class but very easy to pass. Many handouts for listening exam but it was so fun to know different types of world music. I still listen to those until now. The class was very fun. The tests are easy and doable. You will pass very easily but study hard.
A really interesting and easy class. This class is very lecture heavy and you do need to watch them to pass the tests but you can tell that he is passionate about what he's teaching which makes it easy to process. The tests can be a little difficult but as long as you watch the lectures and do the assignments you'll be fine and pass with an A.
I'm so glad I took this course because it was on a niche topic. But if you don't know the material before you take the midterm and final, you're basically screwed. You can tell how much he loves the Beatles, which is cool, but he only accepts work on time. Tests are timed, and you can't return to the previous questions.
AWESOME CLASS!!! Super fun and interactive even though it was online. Very few assignments, and I think only 2 tests. He offered one extra credit opportunity which would leave room for over 100%. I recommend this teacher, it was an honor to be taught by him! I wish he taught more classes, If you can take this class in person, do that.
Dr. Doyle was great! You don't have to pay for any textbook; he makes the content interesting. I took this class for my iGETC and I don't regret it. The lectures are long but helpful when it comes to the test. The book is also entertaining to read. I liked this class. If you're looking for a fun class take this one!
Just one assignment per week, one midterm and one final which is really hard and picky, the average for the test was literally 66. if u want to transfer so need to get an A, NEVERR take this class. He is literally did nothing, just upload the same lecture again, getting money through our textbook.... It just dropped my GPA.
Excellent professor very professional
Wonderful guy, loved the class.
Exam questions are all based on the book he wrote and cannot be googled. Exams have a 1 hour time limit and like 60 questions so you don't have enough time search for the answers in the book. Responds to emails quickly. The discussion posts may seem easy enough for you to pass the class with an A but the exams make up a lot of your grade.
Dr. D really knows his stuff on The Beatles. While the class has a decent workload, his engaging lectures and useful resources like unstuck AI make it a worthwhile and enjoyable experience. No textbook required - just come ready to discuss the music!
I took the course 2 years ago but felt compelled to come back and give a review. The class was awesome!! He successfully converted me into a hardcore Beatles fan. I took it over the summer and while the lectures were long and I had lotsss of pages of notes, it was an enjoyable way to spend my time. It's obvious that he's passionate :) Easy quizzes.
Bros just trying to sell his book and the test and the questions are so subjective to his own opinions
Dr. Doyle doesn't assign any hw other than reading the material and preparing for discussions in class (which isn't graded). Tests make up most of ur grade and are open notes.
I learned so much about music in this class. I took this class with Dr. Doyle a few years ago and would take it again.
Usually an A student &I struggled for a low B. Required textbook that he wrote&the tests are insanely specific to things mentioned in 1 sentence of the whole book/packets. Very difficult. Lectures made up of listening to his travels. Barely had HW, hard to buffer grade from bad tests scores. Unfortunately dont recommend. He was also kinda mean.
This professor does NOT test you on your understanding of music. Uses his own textbook + asks you about things written in appendix, though we're not required to read the appendix. Many points are based on whether or not you remember who said which quote in exams. So WRITE DOWN ALL QUOTES given in his book (which is full of baseless assertions)
Useless homework: answer objective questions + reply to 3 forum posts. Very little you can write in response to ppl writing the same answer as you. Exams aren't abt music but abt whether you read his "textbook" which is just a compilation of quotes + personal opinions. Example: "Music washes away from the soul the __ of everyday life". Answer: dust
Professor has students answering questions about what tempo the piece is in + asks us to respond to the forum posts of three other students as if we all didn't just say the same thing. We are required to buy HIS textbook (which oversimplifies many concepts). Tips: Listen to all dropbox music files. Literally memorize the music (which is a lot)
Easy enough class, the tests just required you to read what was on the slides in the dropbox and listen to the music.
GREAT storyteller (for why music practices are done, why certain instruments are used, & what music does in a film). I like & better understand songs from his class. HOWEVER, don't cram: U repeatedly listen to music for 2 online assignments. For exams, u binge ~40 songs (5 of which are actually on there) & flip thru the whole textbook + packets.
