Was rude during test reviews, and assigns an egregious amount of work. The weekend before the test we had 3 worksheets, a reading check, and a progress check on work that was not on the test. Does not make his own lecture videos, and during in person classes you just work on another worksheets
This man changed our all multiple choice test to having majority open-ended two hours before the exam. We have like 6 worksheets a week, and he makes you start a new unit right before the test. Have fun finding time to study for your exams! I got As on the first two tests with West but now that we have him I don't even know if I passed the third!!
This class was hard but Dr. Ellenberger made it harder. He switched our tests to fill in the blank halfway through the semester which went against our syllabus. He just stands around in class doing nothing and gives us 7, five page worksheets each week along with lecture videos (which aren't even his) and hundreds of online practice problems.
Dr. Ellenberger might as well be replaced by the PLA's. When in person they are more helpful and aware of what's going on. He went against syllabus and changed up the exams. The answer keys for our work don't even have the correct answers highlighted. He doesn't even do his own lecture videos. Like seriously UGA?! This man belongs in a highschool.
Dr. Ellenberger assigns an undoable amount of homework. The class was difficult before he took over, but now it is borderline impossible. I feel burned out and no longer motivated to try anymore. He also drops surprise changes to test format hours before the test happens. I emailed him about my feelings and he completely ignored me. Does not care.
Increased no. of worksheets. Doesn't do anything during the one mandatory recitation. Changed test format against syllabus. Doesn't read emails thoroughly, even if its about errors in the hw system (if he does, expect one-word responses). There's no need for him here, he doesn't contribute anything.
additional support that he doesn't do his own video lectures. one time in recitation he said that we can start working on worksheet name even though it was already about 3 days past the due date. I'm convinced he doesn't even know what's going on anymore. Wouldn't be surprised if he gets dismissed after this semester's course evaluations.
Also, we have a weekly progress check and reading check. While reading checks are whatever, progress checks tend to be very difficult and disconnected from the textbook section and very different from test questions. But, progress checks are worth more so have fun with that.
i wished professor ana west (the professor in charge of the first half of the semester) would come back
Ellenberger doesn't even make his own lecture videos... he uses old videos given to him on behalf of his wife. He also did not follow the syllabus in regards to our most recent exam. I wish uga didn't require us to swap professors in the middle of the semester! The first half was a lot harder but was much more organized and comprehendible.
He doesn't seem to know what is going on constantly. Constantly switching up the schedule does not bother to make an announcement. Had to obsessively check gradescope, elc, pearson to avoid accidentally missing things. Pretentious in office hours, hides in bathroom during actual recitation. Vaque replies, always need to send 2-3 emails to clarify
Ellenberger is extremely disorganized and never really knows what is going on in the class when it comes to assignments. Due dates are always messed up, and he gives way too many assignments at once. He is not great at communicating and is either hard to reach or doesn't fully answer your question. I wish we didn't switch profs halfway through.
He does not communicate. Will respond to emails with one word & doesnt answer questions. Hasnt taught a single thing since he hides during class time to allow the PLAs to attempt to answer our questions. His lectures are old ones his wife made. Expects you to know due dates that are not on the schedule & will not answer questions thoroughly.
Yeah no this man is so unorganized and inconsistent... he makes assignments due too early and has shifted this course for the worse. HE doesn't even make his own lecture videos... so useless...
avoid bill at all costs. poor guy doesn't know how to run a routine, answer emails, or provide correct answer keys for his assignments. the course is an absolute shambles.
So unorganized. Assignments due way too ahead of time to study for anything. Inconsistent method of teaching. I'm sure he's a great guy, but it feels as though no one knows what's happening in the class ever because of how inconsistent it is. He has not taught me a single thing during this course.
He literally has not taught me a single thing during this course. I'm sure he's a great guy. Professor? not so much.
Unorganized course and he doesn't even teach (lecture videos are not his)... he is inconsistent and gives little to no feedback... that should be enough to show you not to take his course... although he is probably a decent human... but not fit to be a chemistry professor.
Like many others, I have not learned a single thing from this professor. Completely unprofessional. Do not take. When I asked to speak to him about how I was struggling in the class, his only advice was to go for a jog or walk before the tests.
dr Ellenberger is definitely a nice guy, but not a good professor. The homework is due before you even have time to learn the material. You have to learn new things that are not even on the test which gets confusing. In class is mandatory to attend even though you sit in silence the entire time and learn nothing. he does not teach.
the most unprofessional disorganized chaotic class i have ever taken. the syllabus is thrown out the window and the assignments are never released on time and we get swamped with assignments we arent supposed to have each week. doesnt respond to emails/only w 1 word. worst communication with class ive ever seen. no one knows whats going on ever...
He doesnt teach you anything. Overloads students with worksheets that he doesnt go over during in person. Answer keys dont actually have the answers so theres not much to study off of. The amount of family emergencies he has right before exams during office hours is shocking. If you work full time as well do yourself a favor and dont sign up
Bill Ellenberger did the bare minimum to provide for his students. Assignments were barely graded by him and he rarely responded to emails. When he did, they were short answers that barely scratched the surface of what they needed to get into. Overall, he was unorganized, didn't know the material he was supposed to be teaching, and just didn't care
Difficult and frustrating professor for a difficult and frustrating class. Worksheets are long, difficult, given frequently, and do not reflect material on tests nearly as much as one would expect. The lectures are not his own, and do not match graded material. Incredibly poor organisation. Ignore him and teach yourself and you should be okay.
This class-tested my patience to the maximum. The answer keys for all the worksheets we were assigned were always wrong and we were never given points that we were promised back. It was disappointing to see how much work was put into the class by the students and not receiving the same effort back. We would always get minimal email responses also.
Bill Ellenberger did the bare minimum and was rude along the way. Assignments were graded by his WIFE and he didnt responded to emails or was rude while doing so. Overall, he was unorganized, didn't know the material he was supposed to be teaching, and just didn't care. His wife (department chair) did everything and it still wasnt enough.
Tests are insanely hard. Avoid UGA chem department by all means.
Dr. Ellenberger was great, and I used recitation sessions and office hours to ask him questions. He was always very nice and helpful, and if you take the opportunity to ask him questions he is very good at explaining concepts. He struggles with technology a little, but it didn't bother me too much. Class isn't impossible, just takes a lot of work.
Dr. Ellenberger seemed really unorganized and not committed to our class. The lecture videos were very short, our in-person recitation sessions were useless (we just did worksheets on our own) and I never really saw him go over any questions and explain them correctly. I completely self-taught myself. Tests were difficult.
Ellenberger was a kind prof, but it was bad that we had to switch profs in the middle of the semester. His lectures weren't his and it seemed that we didn't have a consistent schedule. Every week there was some kind of assignment or grading problem. I think overall it is an issue with the chem department and the class will always be difficult.
He is a kind person. However, worksheets were due everyday or every other day. He did not really teach the class at all, we relied on reading the textbook and watching the videos for content and we did all the worksheets/recitations on our own. Due dates were unclear and always changing. We have no time to study for tests or the final.
Dr. Ellenberger did not teach us anything. He assigned an outrageous amount of assignments that left me feeling constantly overwhelmed; you can never get a break. I wasn't able to get tutoring or dedicate extra time to learning the material because I could barely finish the assignments I had. All day every day spent on chem, yet I ended with a B.
Dr. Ellenberger unfortunately had a lot of personal issues this semester, causing him to miss office hours. I want to be kind and say that because of that and the class being asynchronous, things didn't go too well. However, he was not helpful in office hours or class. He did not use his own lecture videos. He miskeyed multiple exams.
Worst professor ever. He did not teach us anything. All the lectures were his wife's and they were outdated and not reflective of the test questions. Too many worksheets and no clear due dates. He never taught anything in lecture and would not listen to anything students. He missed online lectures occasionally without notice. HORRIBLE!!!!
the progress checks are way too hard and ask questions that have nothing to do with the chapter or reading check. He skips through the slides so quickly you literally have no time to write anything down and then doesn't post the slideshows. If you want to pass the tests you better know how to study on your own.
don't
His lectures are horrible. I genuinely learned more from not going to his lectures. The content itself isn't too bad. It's basically high school chemistry. Ellenberger himself assigns way too much homework and isn't really willing to help. He is also not at all accessible through email. Study on your own and do participation and you'll do better.
terrible ... that's all i can say
I switched my major from a chem related major to something completely different because of this class. Never touching chemistry again in my life.
I took him during Covid (Spring 2021) and I've never in my life made such terrible test grades. I would literally make 50s on the tests. Chem is already difficult so you need a teacher whose organized and able to teach well. For your mental health, don't take him.
literally just don't
Literally hes not that bad. I think people are just dramatic. At least for 1211 its just what you learned in high school plus some extra concepts. Yeah if you struggle with chem youre gonna struggle. But read the textbook. Do the assignments. Youll be fine. Hes really fair. Has office hours and isnt strict on attendance.
Lectures are a copy and paste from the textbook, yet he skips over some concepts from the book, so when u do the homework or the test, youll feel like you havent been taught the material. So read the book and get a tutor. Or better yet just dont have him. If youre registering and hes all thats left, just dont take it.
Dr. Ellenberger was minimally communicative and read pretty much everything straight off the board in lecture at too fast of a pace. I approached him more than once regarding a grading mistake on an online assignment and was dismissed because "it wasn't worth enough to be worth it." Just an overall unhelpful experience. Don't do this to yourself.
If you have the chance, do NOT take this course. This professor does not prepare you for anything, and you are left to learn on your own. I had a 3.8 GPA before this class and I graduated with a c+ and if that is not a testament to how miserable this class is than I don't know what is.
it's a flipped classroom setup which really makes things harder. Progress checks and reading checks are harder because he doesn't go over the material before u take it. his lectures dont help at all, he just reads off slides so basically is useless. the textbook is online its ok. i had to get tutoring outside and science guys helps.
Dr. Ellenberger gets a bad rap but he's not that bad. He's fine at teaching and answering questions. He's fine at being available. I think a lot of the flak he gets is the chem department's fault. The tests are notoriously difficult and the homework is on webassign which is a the worst. I recommend grinding out the test review sheets they send.
Paying attention to lectures was genuinely unhelpful. Best to self-study out of the textbook, but the textbook is terrible as well. Memorization is taught instead of understanding which makes it very easy to dislike chemistry. Be prepared for test questions on content not covered in class.
He was not the best at teaching the subject, at times he often got confused himself. Not very engaging during lectures and homework is difficult. Self-taught class as it is flipped which made learning material difficult. Tests given by dept. are extremely difficult.
I ave nothing good or bad to say about him as a professor. It definitely helps to show up and pay attention to the lectures and read the textbook. The hardest thing about the class are the tests, but he doesn't write them, the department does. If you can get someone else, try to. But chem sucks at UGA regardless of who you have tbh.
I once asked him for help with a problem he assigned, & he didn't know how to do it. Few people went to lectures, you are better off self studying. Many grade points, bad lecturer, weekly hw, 5 exams + final, offered extra credit at end. Other classes consistently scored higher on exams. Use KahnAcademy + book. Sweet man, but avoid at all costs!
This man is so bad at explaining topics and confuses the hell out of you. Don't take his class if you're not good at chemistry. I did pretty good because I skipped all of his classes halfway through the semester. If you think you can do it, no you can't. Avoid him at all costs. The only reason I took his class was because it was the only class left
Ellenberger can be very nice over email, and you can tell he wants to help. HOWEVER you can expect to teach the whole class to yourself. He has no clue to help the class learn the content, and he moves very fast. If you do ask a question, he makes you feel like its your fault for not knowing.
Don't. Just don't. Avoid this man. Seriously. I went to all of his lectures, read the textbook, watched all the lecture videos on elc, etc., but still struggled. Was an A student, but this man destroyed that. The course is manageable, but just take it with a different professor. Please.
Okay... so as a transfer student who made A's in chemistry at my old institution but did not get credit (private to public school issue), this class was hilariously terrible. He is a sweet, old man, but wow could he not teach to save his life. Had I had another prof, my grade would have been at least a whole letter grade higher. DO NOT DO IT!!!!!!!
Nice man, but he is very condescending when you ask stupid questions about any topic. Be ready to cry when you realize the 4 exams + final exam(cumulative) are 82% of your grade. There is a lot of homework, if youre not already proficient in chemistry dont take this class. Do yourself a favor and find any other way to get this credit.
This man does not know how to teach. He shows up late all the time and he is technologically inept. He is not a good teacher. Clicker questions are the bane of my existence.
I never took chemistry before. I read the book, engaged with the material as much as possible, and got a 101%. The lectures are made to be supplemental material. He answers all questions patiently. I also thought he was funny. If you want to do good, its possible, but just like in any STEM course, its all on you.
Honestly UGA Chem is a pain. Ellenberger is not the best professor ever but if you need a chem class, take it. I feel like if I had gotten a different professor that I wouldnt have done any better. The class is meant to be hard and suck but, he is willing to answer your questions and try and help you. Hes a very nice guy personally though.
If you are looking for support and assistance through a professor, this is not the professor to take. He rambles on and on about stuff that is unrelated to the topic and reads really quickly off PowerPoint slides. It felt like both he and I had the same amount of knowledge going into this class. Learned about as much as I would looking at a wall.
A nice guy, but will ramble about unnecessary things and miss the important ones. In-class lectures are a waste of time and he makes them more confusing. You'd learn better if you did everything by yourself. I've always gotten A's in STEM classes, but I never expected a class to be this awful. If I had another teacher, I would've done much better.
I think you would be better off just trying to read through the textbook yourself than taking his class. He does try to answer questions students have and is knowledgeable but I was more confused by his lectures. He seems nice but his explanations feel condescending. Overall, the chem dept. at UGA is not good so good luck with any professor you get
He didnt really care about if his students knew the material he just moved on.
You are better off not even going to class because you will just end up teaching yourself anyways.
Honestly, CHEM1211 is going to be hard no matter who you take. Ellenberger is very monotone and boring, but you will survive. Like the other CHEM courses, be prepared to teach yourself.
I heard there are some new chem professors at UGA who are better but as of now, you pretty much get the same from every professor. The newer textbook is easy to read and understand. Ellenberger does a pretty decent job at explaining concepts and seems to know what he is talking about. This course requires a lot of work and time.
I think Dr Ellenberger gets a bad rep because of the chem department. Hes actually a pretty sweet professor and willing to help. Like most stem classes, chemistry is a lot of self teaching. But with the worksheets and outside work, this class is doable.
Often lectures but finds ways to make the content more confusing than it needs to be. Science Guys was helpful. Lots of progress checks and reading checks for grades. The textbook is online. Tests are hard but you can pass and do relatively well. PLAs are helpful during recitation and tutoring/exam review zooms. There are grades for class questions
He will put you to sleep and comes off as condescending
Very tough class. The UGA Chem department is tough anyways but Ellenberger did not care if students learned. Lots of homework due weekly. Tests are the majority of your grade. Be sure to do well on the small things to help out your test average. The final is what saved my grade for this class.
Dr. Ellenberger was awful. You have to teach yourself everything and his lectures aren't helpful. The final is all conceptual and nothing like the tests, which were all math. Don't waste money on ScienceGuyz, just take the L. Tests averages were in the 30s tho so they offered lots of extra credit at the end, which is the only reason I got a C.
All the CHEM1211 classes are difficult- there are certainly better teachers than Ellenberger. However, it's entirely possible to do well! Going to class, thoroughly reading the textbook and completing the extra practice worksheets were crucial in my personal success. You MUST put in the work; (I think) I got out of the class the work I put into it.
Took him for Orgo 2 which he normally doesn't teach. He is very nice and curves test which is UNHEARD of in the chem department. Office hours weren't much help, you'd ask him a question and he would kind of just ramble about something unrelated. Writing your own notes from test book is a must if you want to learn. Test are 90% of grade like a orgos
Ellenberger really enjoyed teaching, though he did go off script a few times. He did just use the powerpoint slides exactly and just read off of them, but he truly wanted students to succeed. He was available after class, had scheduled office hours and just enjoyed talking about chemistry. He gave everyone 30 bonus points too.
Dr. Ellenberger is a great guy. Sadly this is rate my professor and not rate my buddy. He often breaks into tangents and this makes it difficult to get information. He also had a bad microphone at the beginning of the semester which makes it impossible to hear him. I already have an ochem credit but these tests are brutal.
When I tell you, YOU WILL TEACH YOURSELF EVERYTHING, you will. Not a single thing learned from lecture. Worst experience in my academic life and so ready for him to retire
He is nice but probably the worst teacher I've had up to this point at UGA. I retained absolutely nothing from his lectures. It got to the point where I would just sit in the back and watch Science Guys videos since that was far more useful than anything he did/said. The only positive I will say is our exams were easier than the scale up class.
Dr. Ellenberger is a really nice prof, but his lectures weren't helpful in learning material as he just read straight from the slides (which he posts before covering a chapter). After the first exam I ended up not going to class and just looking at the slides myself and taking notes from the textbook. He was accessible outside of class though.
While he is not great at teaching material in a way that makes sense, Ellenberger offers multiple extra credit opportunities and is willing to help students. He's not ideal as a professor, but it could be worse. I would definitely recommend getting science guyz if you can. Science guyz and the extra credit are the reason I made an A.
I got an A in this class completely thanks to science guyz. I went to class half of the time and have never listened to a single one of his lectures. He obviously does not know how to teach. Tests are manageable if you study Science Guyz often.
Is Ellenberger the best professor? Definitely not, but he made his tests much easier compared to previous years and gave generous curves. It was not hard to get an A in this class. As long as you read the textbook, everything is pretty straightforward. Everyone who says you need science guys for this course is just too lazy to read the textbook.
Incredibly boring lectures that go into too much detail for random topics, but not enough for the more difficult ones. Currently almost a full chapter ahead of what's supposed to be on the test, 2 weeks out from the test date. Takes several weeks to grade anything, so how you're doing in the class is largely a guess. Tests are easier than Gokal's
Genuinely the worst teacher I've had at UGA. He is so lazy. It is obvious Llewellyn writes the exams because they are so different than when he wrote them last semester. There are things that Llewellyn is picky about that he is not and if you ask him about it he will say "go with what Llewellyn is saying." Get ScienceGuys or you will fail with him.
Going to his lectures is a waste of time since all he will do is directly read from the textbook or go on random tangents. He will tell you that attendance is mandatory since there are "class questions," but he will only do them a handful of times. He will also tell you the recitation is mandatory, but he did not once take attendance for it.
Attendance was only mandatory when he did clickers which was 25% of the time. Lectures were a waste of time because it was hard to hear him & he just sped through the PPTs with some annotations. Don't get me wrong, he is a kind guy but just not the best teacher. 20 pts bonus at the end for surveys. ochem is hard
Ochem isn't much about who your professor is, but rather about how you study and practice for it. You need to be determined to spend your time understanding and learning the content in order to do well. I've seen other students who claim to have better teachers, but still end up doing worse on the exams compared to us in Dr. Ellenberger's class.
This is a hard and time-consuming class. I spent my weekends on lab reports and studied line reactions during the week. You will absolutely have to put in the time and effort to do well. That being said, Dr. E was helpful and did give some partial credit back on exams. I'm glad I took it over the summer, so I could focus solely on this class.
Ellenberger is a fine professor. Your grade in the class is fully determined by how much effort and time you put in. Highly recommend doing science guys and rewriting notes right after class, this helped me so much with long term memory rather than trying to cram right before the test.
He really is a hard professor. If you are going to take him, do not take him in the summer. He practically reads off the powerpoint slides and does not explain the material. We had our fourth exam and then the ACS final two days later. My grade dropped from an A to a B after the final because he did not curve it, despite him not teaching us at all.
All UGA chem professors suck but at least he tries to make his exams fair and easier than the other professors. He typically gives back points for regrades and tries to help as best he can. He does not purposely make the exams too difficult with trick questions. Typically questions from his recitations are on the test so it is good review.
Ik lots of people said Prof. Ellenberger is bad . But guys, as long as you read the text book, his tests should be easy. His lectures are boring but he is good at summarizing the materials. His tests are easy imo comparing Prof.Morrison. Prof Ellenberger also takes everything very slowly and make sure his students get the idea. TAKE HIM!
His lectures felt impossible to learn from. He talked straight off the slides in a monotone manner making it very hard to take anything away from class. His tests were difficult, but doable, however, everything I did, I had to do on my own. If you can take a different teacher, do so.
Mane he might seem like a low tone professor. But just pay attention in class, review the Scienceguys cheat sheet and go through the powerpoints. Again go through the powerpoints and learn the reagents. Tests are really really fair bruh you can't do that bad. Don't listen to other review this guy is funny in class too.
He is a GREAT TEACHER! Tests are fair and representative of what is covered in class. Read and understand the textbook and you will do great. He really wants the students to succeed and that is evident in every interaction I have had with him.
HE IS SO SWEET. OChem here is impossible. Either self study or get Science Guyz. That is how you will survive OCHEM here at UGA. I like him bc he has recitations. Attendance isnt mandatory and he will tell you if he uses squarecap.
this class made me finally enjoy chemistry. exams only cover what's in class, not random stuff from the book. lectures are slow but in-depth/easy to follow. he uses his actual lab experience to contextualize material. doesn't expect you to memorize mechanisms. exams are hard, but def doable. def the pick for ochem 2. nice guy too!
He's fairly monotone, but the exams are straight from the slides. Take notes and pay attention, and it's not bad. He likes to provide experimental data in lectures. It's clear he genuinely cares about students and wants us to succeed. Go to office hours and ask questions, and he is so excited to help. Content is difficult, but he does his best.
Very sweet man, but totally inept with technology. Very hard to communicate with. Lectures will put you to sleep and don't really teach anything. Buy scienceguyz and you'll be fine because he does give extra credit and gives 100s on homework and participation as long as you do them.
Dr. Ellenberger doesn't deserve any rating below a 3. His lectures are sometimes a little boring, but he did a tremendous job explaining things. The only times he did squarecap was on the day before exams so you don't have to show up otherwise. I know people who just did science guyz and got an A without coming to class. Good luck!
Probably the most useless lecture I have endured in college. Just get scienceguyz because he is monotone and extremely quiet, which really doesn't help with a class like this
Lectures are kinda boring but def help out with HW. Recommend going to office hours if you cant afford Sci Guys. The exams were somewhat similar to Reciatation but with few changes. Does iClicker questions; so if you dont go, better hv a friend who can share answer. 4 exams (drops lowest), 1 final, Recitation attendence = 50/50 records attendence.
Ellenberger was my favorite professor of my 4 chem profs at UGA. His tests are easy and he truly cares about his students learning. I would 1000000% take him again. Lectures aren't that good so I wouldn't go and would use science guys.
No idea why his ratings were so poor. This class made me enjoy chemistry again. He explains topics simply and goes through lectures that I found to be helpful. He is monotoned and quiet in class, so sit towards the front. He is helpful in rec. Scienceguyz was also helpful too for this class!
Honestly he's not that bad. Sure lectures drag but he throws in some interesting chemistry facts here and there. Recitations graded for completion. I did lots of practice problems so that will be your saving grace in this class, plus scienceguyz helps. He's a fair grader, and tests are not bad compared to how they could be. Overall nice guy.
Dr. Ellenberger is a very sweet and humble man who just really loves chemistry. Nonetheless, success is about READING THE TEXTBOOK and DOING PRACTICE PROBLEMS. Trust me, Scienceguyz is a waste of money. I never bought it and did fine because there was more than enough textbook practice. Class content is based around the textbook, so READ IT.
I would definitely recommend him. His tests were reflective of the material shown in class and he was generous with partial credit. He only did squarecap questions the class before the exam and would tell everyone when he was going to do them. He grades all recitations for completion. If you get science guyz and study it is a very doable class.
Honestly Ellenberger wasn't bad. His tests are easier than most because its what we covered in class usually. He tells you the class before if there will be square cap. He ended up grading square cap and recitations for completion. I literally only used Science guyz to learn and cross referenced with his slides to make sure I knew all the info.
Dr. E covered the material adequately in his lectures and I reviewed the textbook before exams and that worked. His exams were certainly fair and he gave generous partial credit. The recitation worksheets were standard and he was flexible with submitting them late. Not the most engaging lectures, but if you put in the work the grade is easy.
Unfortunately, Dr. Ellenberger is not fit to be a professor of chemistry. He is consistently unprepared for class, does not communicate or respond to communication, does not adhere to the policies stated in his own syllabus, is unable to use and maintain the programs he assigns to students, and consistently teaches incorrect or outdated material.
Terrible professor. You will learn everything on your own
Always 10-15 minutes late for class and unprepared. Never knew what was going on. Not accessible via email. He seemed to be an okay professor the semester before this one when he wrote his own exams. Now 2212 exams are department written. take another professor. I have never been this worried about a grade before, even for all other chems.
I bought the textbook, read and took notes on the material that matched up with Dr. Ellenberger's powerpoints which was useful. If you do the back of the textbook problems you should be fine. The textbook summarizes the reactions at the end of each chapter!!! Beware of some the CLAs, the ones I had were not good and had no clue what was going on.
Anyone but Ellenberger. Lectures are not engaging and Ellenberger is clearly not prepared for them. I started going to the other professors' lectures, and the difference was honestly baffling. Expect to teach yourself everything, and for the ACS to be a slaughterhouse. Get out while you can, and if not, then I pray for you.
genuinely the worst class ive ever taken. class avg on the first test was a 58 and they gave no curve at all. recitations were all taken for credit but attendance to sessions wasn't required. only did like 4 days of in class questions right before tests. did joint tests with hubbard so the first 2 were heavily open ended and the last were all mc.
Never provided us with resources for the lab final. Tanked everyone's grade 2-3 letters with the lab final's averages under 50%. Tested us on minor details never mentioned in lab. Long 6+ page lab report due every week. Never knew any deadlines or dates until the last minute. Extremely disorganized. My 4 credit hour classes gave less work.
He's not as bad as people make him out to be. He's just older and therefore has difficulty with technology and remembering to do stuff. He's not out to get you. The main problem is delayed grading (so you don't know your grade till the very end) and boring lectures. Honestly, just read the free online textbook. Don't be scared.
Dr. Ellenberger is very understanding and kind. I didn't attend his lectures because I wouldn't really learn from them, but I went to office hours and I found that to be more helpful. IDK if my class was the exception but he did not scan us in for recitation (so we got to miss it)
Ellenberger is a fair grader who makes his tests reflective of the material covered in class. The textbook is helpful, but I found Unstuck ai and Scienceguyz to be invaluable study tools as well. Attend class and do the practice problems - this class is manageable if you put in the work.
Does not follow his own syllabus. Provided no resources for final exam prep. Never knew the dates to deadlines until last minute. Lectures do not cover the content on the exam. Exams had content we never learned about. Disappointed he taught the honors section.
Taken Summer 2025. He was chronically late, ran overtime, and there was only a 50/50 chance he'd understand your questions and answer them helpfully.
If you have him as a professor go ahead and buy Science Guyz if you want to learn anything. Shows up to class late. Barely covers the surface of topics. Gives zero preparation for tests in class. I asked to come to office hours once to work through problems with him and he told me to just look at the ones in the textbook. Awful. He is nice though.
Do not take his class. He is never on time and does not even know how to use the slides/ projector. Sweet man but horrible teacher. If you have him I wish you the best of luck.
Dr. Ellenberger is so quiet and he mumbles. He is late to class every day and spends 10 minutes figuring out his technology. He is a sweet person, but he only covers surface level material. You have to teach yourself EVERYTHING. Get science guyz if you have him. Good luck, genuinely. Might as well not go to class at all and just teach yourself.
Chronically late and does not seem to care at all about our class. We have a test tomorrow and we still have not finished covering material that is on it. It has gotten so bad that I just sit in the back of the classroom and do the Science Guyz videos during class. It is the only way to do well with him since all 1211 classes take the same exam.
At the beginning of the semester he would show up late by 10 minutes if you were lucky. I went to his class today for the first time in a month and he didn't show up at all. His class is nothing but a GPA deflator so find a better professor not like there are many in the UGA Chem department. Take the class at a different college.
He was almost always late the first few weeks and then would take a long time to actually start teaching by setting up the projector. It seemed like he had things going on outside of class, so I tried to give him grace for being late and stuff. He didn't elaborate too much unless asked, did TopHat inconsistently, and left mid-semester. Sweet though
Often came to class 5-10 minutes late and then spent an extra 5 minutes trying to set up. He often struggled trying to figure out how to write on the slides which took more time away from the actual lecture. Our class ended up being a whole chapter behind for a test that was in one week. He also struggled to use TopHat so we only used it twice.
