he's ok.
Fantastic professor, great speaker and very intelligent, makes himself accessible to the students. Definitely reccomend taking a class he teaches, I learned a LOT.
He is a very clear lecturer who drives home his points, he DOES have pop quizzes (but they aren't ever really a surprise). If you attend his class you will learn a lot and he will grade you easier, because he learns your name and writing style. He is a great theorist and good practictioner of political science. He's liberal, but a dixiecrat.
He is an awesome professor. He is very entertaining and his lectures are worth going to class for. He knows his stuff and always has an interesting story or comment to make.
He's a nice guy, visit him in office hours ---it pays off !! He was great when he discussed the Cold War but he knows little to none about Islam, Islamism, and terrorism. Plus he's the biggest defender of globalization and liberal democratic politics... hello...ever heard of the third world??
I guess he's ok. Tests are easy but long. Maybe it's just because this was my last poli sci class ever, but I thought the lectures were really dull. Just the same rehashing of all the usual stuff. Plus there were a few obnoxious kids in the class, the kind that would make you wait to leave bc they wanted to get in another mindless comment. Lame.
This guy is enthusiastic but a very boring lecturer. His exams were both essay, and he gives you a midterm, a paper, and a final - but never told us the grade breakdown! Also, he didn't hand back our midterms until almost 2 months after we took them - and when he did, it was well past the time to drop the class. Avoid this one if possible.
The guy is a joke! He is egotistical, unorganized and generally has a holier-than-thou attitude. He doesnt read your papers all the way through. I should have dropped the class when I had the chance. If you have an active interest in politics, dont take FieldS class!
One of the worst prof. ever! Is not clear about his grading standards and he is really boring when he lectures. He is very excited about this topic though, but is not good at teaching it!
he's really cocky, but also knows alot and can hold it down. very opinionated
Not a boring lecturer at all. Rather very vivid and humorous lecturer, allows plenty time for class discussion. Very passionate about political science. Not biased could express political views freely, presents both sides of an issue plus he knows what he's talking about. However, if expecting to be handed a good grade just because of your looks, w
very opinionated, but still tries to show both sides of any issue. not boring, tends to be animated while teaching. makes lecture more of a class discussion. fair grader--you get out of it what you put in so do the readings if you want a good grade.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! TAKE HIM! He is so animated and enthusiastic, not to mention sarcastic which is great because it keeps lectures interesting. He is VERY helpful and really cares about students. He really knows his stuff and makes things easy to understand. The lectures are more like discussions which are great. Pop quizes = EASY!
Dr. Field was amazing. Definitely opinated but at the same time kept it bi-partisan and simply had fun with the class. Do your readings and you'll ace the quizes and the final paper can be a pain in butt but as long as put work into it he'll grade you fairly. Overall I loved him and I loved the class!
He is definitely one of my favorite polisci teachers. Great at teaching and fun to listen to. His exams are graded by TA's, and exams are graded hard. Make sure you do well on your research paper because it can hurt your grade a lot by getting a C on it. 2 Exams, one research paper, and fun pop quizzes. I recommend him. Not an easy A class.
BEST PROFESSOR @ RU! Dr. Field is absolutely fantastic. I'm not yet done with the course but he is very clear, very helpful, and very entertaining. From reading jokes to getting different individuals involved Dr. Field is great at what he does, and has a passion for it. He is intriguing in that older interesting proffesor kind of way.
I am convinced the lectures are based merely on reading the new york times- he's no expert on foreign policy. He teaches a 300-level class as if it's 101. I find his sarcasm irritating rather than entertaining. He shoves American Exceptionalism down our throats as if we're in elementary school. Don't take this guy if you want to learn something.
Field was without a doubt the worst professor of political science I have had at Rutgers. He is extraordinarily biased, speaks as though we are elementary school children, and seems unable to maintain a single line of arguement or thought for more than a couple of minutes. Avoid his classes
I really enjoyed taking this class. His lectures always made you think and were useful. Even though it did take a while to warm up to his style/sense of humor, it was definitely worth it. 2 exams, one paper, and you doing the readings help.
His grading is a bit tough on the exams but the paper was easy. Exams are a bit lengthy but not difficult. Looks for specific things in the answers. Entertaining class and pretty funny guy.
A challenging professor but very knowledgeble and nice..Exams are tough and will take every minute and we'll make you work for you're grade
This professor is bad. Don't take 102 with him. He covers too much stuff yet does not explain it clearly and gives the impression that he does not understand the material. He skips over the difficult stuff to talk about news and current events, which anybody can do. He is also not articulate. Not a hard class and my TA was very helpful
Ever wanted to do horrible in a class? Then hop on down to Dr. Field's Exam Roulette! Get ready to memorize over 120 (no exaggeration) terms for each and every exam! Think you can ignore terms which are completely unrelated to IR? Nope! You'll have to know even the most inane and miniscule terms possible. Extremely UNFAIR grader. Avoid 102 w/ Field
horrible professor dont take , not an easy class- big mistake
A nice guy and pretty good teacher, the class is very straightforward and if you try you should get no lower than a B. He gives way too many terms though for the exams though
not as difficult as everyone makes him seem. if you make flashcards of the terms theyre easy to learn and he basically tells you exactly whats going to be on the exam...just know it all
He not only knows a lot about policy but also knows how to make lecture fun and interesting. Textbook is helpful but just skim thru b/c stuff on the reviewsht is usu from specific readings. I'm not done with the class yet but it's not as hard as other ppl say. You will learn a lot from him and pull out a decent grade if you do ur part.
The class starts out good, but towards the end I felt he ran out of things to talk about-He would ramble about nothing. There was a ridiculous amount of prep for the exams, bc he didn't really teach anything on the review sheet. Very hard to get an A, but fairly easy B. Overall, too much work for a class I was left feeling disappointed with
I've taken AFP with him and am taking Brit Govt now. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! He is funny, informative, and interesting. Everything a prof should be. Attend all lectures and do most of the reading and you should do well. Be aware that you should take his classes because they're interesting, not because they're easy.
very dry professor. you must go to class, but be prepared to fall asleep. Not very clear in lectures. Exams are based on lectures and readings but he gives so much material you don't know what to study- comparative public policy
i hate polisci but took the class with a friend. The professor is a good guy, the material isn't clear but does his best to help.
Not a bad professor but gives difficult exams. Pretty funny and is easy to talk to but the lectures can get a little boring. The textbook is garbage and makes you fall asleep. Take this class if your actually interested in British Govt, because its not for anyone looking to get an easy A.
Field is a okay professor. His exams are tricky, but possible to get a good grade. He is a litte arrogant and will take it out on the students. Two exams and a paper is what is required. If you do not come to class he will take note of it.
Warm guy. Not-so-subtle sense of humor and a brilliant way of sensationalizing dry public policy info.
This is my second time taking Prof Field and he is one of my favorite professors. Lectures are a little dry and exams are a little tough (he gives a review sheet before the exam) but overall a good professor. Very approachable if you have a problem. However his classes are not easy and you will have to work for a good grade.
My 2nd class with Field. Love the guy. Unbelievably knowledgeable in not only his field, but seemingly all fields. Lectures are just a tad boring, but he's a funny guy who will answer any question you have. Midterm, final, one short paper, and one long paper. Gives a detailed review sheet before each exam and is extremely helpful.
Awesome professor, who is very knowledgeable in religion and politics. His class is not necessarily structured around a lecture, but class discussions. He's very open to new ideas, and you will learn a lot in his class! Show up to class, do the work, and you will be fine!
One of the best professors I've had. He is extremely knowledgeable. He doesn't talk to you, he talks with you. Also, extremely helpeful and takes time out for students.
One of the best in the Political Science Dept. The class was very hard but thats because its a 400 level class. Easy to talk to, approachable if you have a problem, but going to class is a must. Its a a large discussion class rather than a lecture. 7 small assignments, 2 small papers, 1 research paper and a final. All difficult but worth it.
tough class, tough grader lots of writing and material can get boring at times plus theres six books ur supposed to buy. reading and attendance are necessary. i made the mistake of taking this class along with other heavy writing classes and i was overwhelmed. if u take this make sure ur other classes are easier
One of the best professors ever. This class is by far the easiest one he teaches, but it is still a little difficult. The exams are hard and you really need to read and go to class to pass. The two papers are pretty easy and if you have any problems you can easily go talk to him, Prof Field is without a doubt one of the best in the poli sci dept.
Great, easy to approach professor. Test are a little diffcult but papers were easy. Highly recommend. Any negative reviews are just bums who didn't put any effort in.
Field is a good teacher, but definitely over-rated. He has a group of students who take him EVERY semester. Nevertheless he is very knowledgeable. This class was challenging, exams were tough. Don't skip classes and take GREAT notes if you want an A.
Really nice guy, class was pretty interesting, and exams were fair.
Love love love professor field! such a nice caring guy. he truly cares about his students. class was easy, two exams one paper. i barely studied and got a B+. easy A with a little effort. take him he's hilarious!!!
This is one of the best professor's I've ever had! Listening to his lectures is REALLY interesting, and he's incredibly helpful. He cares about his students and has an endearing sense of humor. He has a bit of a following, so he's not for everyone. I'm really looking forward to taking his class again next semester!
Professor Field is honest, caring, helpful, knowledgeable, passionate and incredibly smart. I respected him from the minute I walked into his classroom and still do! I looked forward to coming to his class each week and I feel so lucky to have met him. He is among one of the most quality professors at Rutgers.
I wasn't interested in this 3 hr course on the British Government and Commonwealth, but Prof. Field made it fun, and I actually liked going to class. He's funny, organized, helpful and it seems like he really cares about his students. Definitely take him. Plus he gives an awesome study guide!!
This man is an awesome lecturer. Comes to class experienced and prepared. His exams are relatively difficult, but he gives students options on how difficult it will be based on how much information about it he will give. Ultimately, the final paper is the most difficult. He looks through it thoroughly. Make sure you take it very seriously.
Yo this guy is the man!!! I love Prof Field. Suck up to him and he will love you. I just kind of chill at his office hours for funsies. <3 him best professor and easy as hell. Plus he's really funny and is a great lecturer. Take him im serious.
Dedicated and educated professor. Engages with the classroom and has everyone participate in the lecture with discussion based activities. Really funny and very fun to have. Highly recommend taking him.
He is a great guy. his class was made up of a few short papers and one 10 pager plus a final. He gave you ten or so essays before the final from which he picked about 3. Put it this way i've taken 200 level classes than are harder than this class and it was really interesting.
Really awesome professor. Work isn't hard, readings weren't mandatory, and attendance wasn't taken every class. As long as you sit in the front and go to class and engage with him you'll probably get an A. Taking his class next semester too, really nice guy.
The class was fine, and he seems nice enough. One strange thing is it seems like he has a following of students who keep taking him every semester and everyone in the class knows each other beforehand. It was a little weird; that's my only complaint.
I loved his lectures regarding the influences of religion in politics and politics on religion. He can come off as condescending and a bit arrogant but he is brilliant. This class will require students to work but you do end up learning a lot. You get the grade based on the work you put in though.
The math course for people who can't do math. Field is a solid lecturer, making sure that everyone understands the material. It's a tough class but he gives you plenty of opportunities to improve your grade. He's funny and loves participation. Just talk to the guy and you'll learn a lot. He's brilliant and witty. Hated the class & TAs but liked him
Great professor, really enjoyed the class. Its not an easy A by far, but if you go to lecture and pay attention to the powerpoints (which he puts online) youll get an A. Midterm exam and research paper final for Poli-sci methods.
Professor Field is the best. He cares deeply about his students and wants to see them succeed. Always willing to help, always willing to give you advice. Take him!
Enjoyed him, great man and one of the best teachers ever. Always took time out of his schedule to communicate and help. Not only that, knew like everyone's name in a lecture hall the size of a movie theater. Plus, his lectures are interesting
Great professor. Absolutely loved his course. Was an honors seminar, so a lot of reading and writing. Really understanding and caring professor who only wants you to learn and succeed in his class. Make sure to participate a lot!
Students like him because he's an easy grader. His "holier than thou" attitude is unbearable, his humor is very dry. Funny how he thinks he understands what he is teaching when he ran for local office twice and didn't win either time lol. Take the class if you want an easy A but if you want to learn something, don't bother.
Quite possibly the worst professor I've taken at Rutgers. Took him last year for Research Methods and thought that it was just the class that I didn't like. He ended up teaching this class last minute and has never posted a syllabus or graded assignments from two months ago. Makes jokes at the expense of any student with a different opinion.
He is mean to the students taking his class, vague while presenting his lectures (at times reading off the slides directly or editing his slides on the spot), and inconsistent in his teaching. While emphasizing the importance of responsibility, it took him over two months to grade our papers and exams. Each week was a new excuse. Avoid
Took him for Lessons from Europe. It was an interesting class and held in a large lecture hall in the AB building, but seats would fill up quickly so try coming in a few minutes early! I enjoyed the class but it's so easy to find yourself scrolling on Facebook a few minutes into class. Notes weren't as thorough so thats where the readings come in
Professor is extremly knowledgeable. However, it is difficult to ignore his arrogance/attitude. Calls on you to share your opinion, then proceeds to cut you off and not finish your thought while telling you your opinion is wrong. Learned alot in the course but couldn't stand the professor.
My favorite class that I had at Rutgers University so far (coming from a junior). This is because Professor Field is the best teacher I have had. He genuinely cares about his students and gets to know everyone eventually. Would recommend everyone to take his classes and I want to take as many as I can in the future.
Professor Field is an amazing professor. I had him for an internship course & he made it so interesting by having a guest speaker each week. I truly felt like I learned something about what I wanted to do in the future because of the speakers that came in. He is very passionate about political science & is so caring! Attendance is mandatory though!
I loveeeee Professor Field. He is such an amazing person I always love hearing about his thoughts and opinions on things. He is also very funny and makes class really interesting. Professor Field is a very understanding person and will try to work with you as much as he can. Definitely recommend taking his classes.
If you pay attention in class and put a little effort into your papers you should do fine in his seminars. The one I took was on political theory which was a bit boring but overall not a bad class.
Field is a good person who cares about his students, but can be disorganized as a teacher. Takes months to grade hw & exams, & is frustratingly vague about test review. Assigns lots of reading, but u can get away w not doing it. Definitely knows the material & engages well w students. He wants everyone to do well & will help u if u put in the work.
790:101 - hes ok. i like him as a person but not really as a teacher. Organized but at the same time a little all over the place. i wish he was clearer on the material; it's frustrating sometimes. Very engaging; class was enjoyable.
I took him for two courses and always enjoyed his classes. He genuinely cares about students and was super helpful when I reached out to him with questions. I recommend his internship course - he really helps you find something that fits your interests and cares about you figuring out what you want to do post grad.
His comments can be a bit rude, or maybe it's just me.
He isn't aware that not everyone is a poli sci major here and expects everyone to understand his material immediately. Not lovin his teaching style, and his attitude.
there are better professors out there in my opinion, and there are better classes to take to fill SAS core requirements
just no
chat he is skibidi toilet
ppl did bad on his first exam and said he thought it was easy and laughed so um..yeah...
He talks like Socrates, just keep asking questions. Honestly, if I know the answers by myself why do I need to go to class? And he does not give study guide for exams.
Surprised when students fail the midterm exam yet doesn't take steps to better prepare students for the final. He doesn't use Canvas to grade so you never actually know your grade, and fails to respond to emails when asking for them. Basically you're blindly taking the class.
Very very unorganized canvas and the TAs taught us everything. Lecture was just random rants about material not related to our overall research paper. Has the potential to be a good professor if he would organize his thoughts. He also comes across very rude and condescending towards his students.
He isn't a terrible professor, he's simply okay. He does tend to ramble and can come off demeaning towards students. But he was helpful and would tell us what would be on the exam. As long as you take notes and actually study, you'll do well.
Super unorganized class basically only taught by the TA's. Paper barely mentioned until the end of the semester where all of us were confused. Frustrating to write and TA's were severely overwhelmed at the end. Pop quiz grades counted for attendance.
A lot of his lectures don't really apply to the term paper and most of your "learning" will be from the TA's but he is very willing to help you and is an overall nice man.
Rambles during lectures, most learning will be during recitation with your TA's (pray you get good ones). Most of the graded assignments are from recitation, one large 10 pg. research paper is the main component. Gives decent feedback and direction and while viewed a slightly kooky he is nice and approachable. Grades attendance randomly.
pretty interesting guy - honestly youll get an A if you try the bare minimum. hes a bit all over the place so you def have to attend class. he says attendance isnt mandatory but will give quizzes on random days. half of your grades dont even get entered. overall hes all over the place but nothing wrong with him as a teacher cause youll get an A
This guy is the reason no one majors in Pol Sci. If you want to spend entire lectures just reading nothing while learning about nothing, take his class. Asking him a question is a political science in of itself. Want a better grade? Good luck, cause he'll be too busy chatting it up with 19 year old girls rather than help you. Would not recommend.
5 billion readings and he still won't explain why I only ended the class with a B. Awful grader.
interesting guy. he would've been okay if he wasn't so condescending and kinda performative.
The content of the course was interesting. However, Prof. Field is truly one of the most condescending professors I have ever had. I highly do not recommend taking this class for the sole purpose if he is the prof.
