Great prof. Nice accent too.
During lectures either turns back to students and just reads off of the slides or puts one word on the slides and tries to elaborate on the word but just ends up completely repeating himself for an hour and a half. Most boring lectures i've ever been to. Assignments are ok, super easy to make up but midterms and exam are made for students to fail
Very average prof as far as teaching goes - I found if I missed a class or two I'd be okay, but a lot of lecture material is orally spoken and not on slides. He's a pretty decent guy and I found the assignments to be fair. And yeah, his accent is pretty cool.
Really liked this proff. Has a scottish accent but is super easy to understand. He is entertaining and keeps the lectures interesting. The papers have clear guidelines and examples to go off. The midterm and final were a breeze if you studied and went to class. He uses a textbook but its online. Highly recommend.
LOVE LOVE LOVE! Nothing to hate especially whats better than an hour and a half of a sweet accent in enjoyable material?
Good prof! Really enjoyed his class. Gave interesting and engaging lectures & was able to simplify a large amount of material. I would highly recommend taking his class- I learned a lot.
my biggest regret was when I started going to class less because of the stress of my other classes. it really ended up hurting my final mark in the end but I do not regret taking the class. you just need to manage your time wisely and you will be great!
I absolutely loved Billy's class. He adds a lot of stories and it is clear that he is passionate about the subject. Although the lectures seem straight forward, the midterm and final really threw me off... be prepared for difficult tests!
Gave pretty interesting lectures and handled sensitive topics well. Although I'm sure you could pass without attending the lectures, I found that by attending the lectures I could skip the readings and still end up with an A. He gives a break in the middle of each lecture which helped keep my focus. Midterm was fair, but the exam was a bit harder.
William is amazing. Readings are tough but as soon as you go to lectures and skim through the textbook, you will do very well! I'll never fall asleep in his class cuz that's inspirational at all time! Assignment is fair and the workload isn't that bad. Midterm is hard but exam is fairly easy.
Best prof ever so far at carleton. I would take him again just for fun if i could! definitely recommend him! also papers are easy just make sure and do the work. not mandatory for class but i went because i enjoyed them!
Dr. Flynn is an amazing teacher, his classes are interactive and fun!
Textbook and lecture material is pretty much the same but he does a very good job at explaining things in lecture. Offers lots of help is you require it. Overall he is very good
Great prof! He doesn't leave much to his slides however if you do the readings (theres not many) you'll be fine. I rarely attended the lectures post-midterm (mainly because it was at 8:30am) and studied for the final the day of yet still managed to get a solid mark. Would definitely take a class with him again!
Amazing prof, throws funny jokes in to make things more interesting. Slides are the bare minimum - just point form so going to lectures where he discusses everything in depth helps a lot. Always gives a sample essay and clear guidelines, only thing to be aware of is his exam short answer are NOT short, they are a page long each.
By far my favourite professor so far, hilarious, very nice and outgoing. Unlike other Carleton professors he is approachable and will help you when needed. I would recommend taking his classes.
really good
okay theres nothing better than looking at an Australian wolverine who cares about his students is excellent in lecturing and makes it clear what he expects of his students. love love love billy
Good at explaining. Understands the material. The sample essays he gives are very helpful. Attending lectures and reading the assigned textbook readings convey similar information, so it is not crucial to do both. If you do your assignments and study for the test, you're almost guaranteed to do well.
Took this class last semester. Although, his midterm/final worth a lot of marks, his questions are easy to answer and gives out hint about what is going to be on the midterm/final. He gives out sample essay paper. Cares about student's success.
Billy was great I loved having him. Joked all the time in class. Slides are a bit confusing there are no headings and very vague bullet points so to understand them you have to go to class. Readings aren't that mandatory I would just skim before the midterm or final and look at the definitions they give in the textbook for certain concepts.
An awesome prof with material that is easy to grasp. He makes the material fun and the textbook is easy to read and online. His midterm and exam are fair and his assignments give you the opportunity to apply your understanding of the content by incorporating things which interest you.
Billy was amazing. He really cares for his students to pass and gives a free online version of the textbook and required readings. Study the lectures more than the text. Be prepared to relate the key topics to real life on midterms and exam, theyre not difficult at all. 100% my fav prof, taking his 2nd year course because I enjoyed his lectures
Clear voice, clear explanations, good lecture, you will NOT miss a thing. The textbook is free on CULearn. Makes it really easy to pass, the lectures cover the material so well that I hardly had to study. Really lightens the load when your other classes are very difficult. More than just a good professor, he is a good guy as well.
Professor Flynn is funny, kind and great at lecturing. His power-points are effective and he builds off of them in comprehensive and concise ways. Always makes his lectures interesting and often ends them early. Makes hilarious jokes and has a great accent.
Definitely my favorite prof, he's really easy to listen to in class and is really funny and easy going. If you have a legitimate excuse he will grant extensions. Exams are fine, he won't include anything that wasn't covered in depth, assignments are good. Definitely a prof that wants you to succeed
Professor Flynn is super funny, really nice, and easy to understand. However, his lecture slides are somewhat hard to follow. The assigned readings are great because he only makes you read things that relate to the lecture. He is really good at explaining and providing examples that better your understanding of the topic. Love this guy!
Flynn is the reason that I switched my concentration from psychology to sociology. He is an incredible prof with easy to understand content and is capable of making his lectures both informative and fun. Easily my favourite prof.
One of my favourite teachers, for sure. His lectures are engaging and interesting and he is always available outside of class if you need help. He is such an interesting man to talk to and his accent is amazing- plus he's super cute. Go to his lectures and understand the material- it's actually super interesting! Excited to have him next semester.
His lectures are fairly dry and his slides are not very detailed. I would suggest going to class because he does go off the slides a lot. Overall his class is super easy and he shows you what you got right and wrong on the midterm. Will take his class again
Great prof! Assignments were easy! Midterm was difficult but exam was easy! Nothing bad to say hes fair and understanding.
Very good guy. His lectures are boring but he tries to make it fun with jokes which is nice. His slides are very vague. Overall, midterm was harder than the exam. Do the readings and study and you will be fine.
The lectures were quite boring but this prof explained the material in a very easy way to understand. The "short answers" on the exam and midterm are more like long answers, they are a page each. The papers are pretty straight forward but he is impossible to access through e-mail.
I LOVE HIM! He's super funny, makes his lectures enjoyable and interesting, is very clear and concise about his expectations and the assignments (which are easy!). He has an Irish accent which is v cute and he always wears the same shirt but overall he was my favourite prof of the whole semester. Many people change majors because of him!
Billy if youre reading this never stop doing what u do or who u are, seriously ur the reason i switched majors. im new to carleton and ur the best professor who is so funny caring and helpful and make theory so much better to understand. thanks for everything man ur a gem
Flynns lectures were engaging and well organized. His class structure was totally reasonable with 2 assignments and each exam worth 25%. He obviously cares about his students and their success rate. Hes accessible outside of class and is very warm and welcoming when it comes to questions or feedback. Hes a great prof.
He has such a think Irish accent and basically every class has a different way of saying the same thing- "society influences society." If you can write a few papers about that and pay attention in class enough to answer multiple choice questions then it is a very easy class. He also tries to make sure he makes a corny joke in every lecture.
Good teacher that is passionate about what he teaches. He repeats himself a lot but it can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on who you are. Exams are alright if you take the time to study and understand the material. Textbook is free online. He likes to make "bad" jokes during breaks.
Dr. Flynn is my favorite profs and his New Zealand accent is amazing. Two papers, a midterm, and a final. His exams are non-cumulative, multiple-choice, and there's one short answer question for each topic so you can easily predict what they will be. My 1002 was an 8:30 am so I only went to the tutorial, I didn't use the textbook, and got an A!
Billy is great! The class was pretty interesting and he really engaged with everyone! He has an Irish accent but its super easy to understand him. He also tells one dad joke every lecture so those are always highlights! There was 2 essays, a midterm, and a final which were not very difficult. Tutorial is worth 20% so go!
Easy credit ! Material is easy but class is boring. His powerpoints aren't my favourite because they have no outline, but the needed concepts/terms are there. Im a textbook person but it wasn't necessary. Textbook is online. tutorial (graded on attendance/participation). 2 assignments. 1 midterm. 1 final.
Professor Flynn was an amazing and caring prof. He made my first year at carleton amazing. His course is easy if you attend class and do your readings. He is a prof that cares about not only his students doing great in his class, but also about his students well-being. Easily one of the best professors at carleton.
One of my favourite profs at Carleton to date! His lectures were never boring and always kept my attention (His accent was a bonus). He had a very fair course load, with only two written assignments and two exams. He was always so clear what was expected so nothing was a surprise. Easy A if you put the effort in. 10/10 would recommend!
Very awesome prof, with great TA's. There is some reading to do but they aren't really heavy. He makes sure to integrate at least one joke per class, usually after taking a break from lecture. His lectures are interesting but you don't have to attend to pass. I'll definitely look out for him in the future. :)
Extremely clear and very easy to follow
I liked Professor Flynn. He is a hilarious prof and he always made his lectures very interesting. It was a 2-hour lecture but he always gave us a 10-minute break. He would also tell us a joke each lecture which was enjoyable. Plus his Irish accent makes it worth it. Take his class!
A very interesting professor. Keeps students engaged and has interesting projects. Tests are extremely fair in terms of both content and grading. Participation matters in tutorials. He cares about his students learning and would I would recommend.
Professor Flynn is such an amazing prof! All-in-all, it's a pretty easy course. His lectures were never boring and he was always so engaged with the class! The essay and assignment were very straight forward and the midterm and final were pretty easy. I definitely recommend taking one of Flynn's classes!!
This prof is so funny, and I love his accent. The class material was tough to understand, and the assignments were not well explained in my opinion, so I had a lot go trouble getting good grades on essays and whatnot.
NO EXAM, 10 discussion posts (easy af) 80% of your mark, 1 essay (10%), and 1 reflection essay on the previous essay (10%). Flynn is a beauty and I would defs recommend him anyday. I probably spent an hour total on his class and I was done for the day and onto the next.
If you have to choose a prof for any sociology class, choose Flynn. His lectures are super easy to follow and he gives great examples. The final for his class was a two page paper on what we found interesting. Really caring and amazing guy, nice accent, really accessible and kind, and overall a really easy and respectable prof. Highly recommend.
I loved this class!! He was by far my favourite professor! He kept lectures engaging and interesting. The workload is perfect and easy if you put effort into it. If I could take more classes with this prof I would in a heart beat!!
hands down the best prof at cu! with online learning being a challenge to both students & profs, billy was very considerate. he managed to deliver the course content with professional & enthusiasm. he was super caring for students well being & was always available outside of class. take his class whenever u can, u wont regret it!!
Genuinely nice man with clear lectures and straight-forward course outlines broken down into organized weekly modules - which I loved! If assignments that are worth a big chunk of your grade scare you, then his class is perfect as your grade is mainly made up of 10% written assignments. Great first year choice.
Professor Flynn was one of my favourite professors in Carleton because his lectures were interesting, he was approachable when someone needed assistance and really got to know the students in his class. Our TA classes were also very easy to understand and clear instructions were given for each assignment and exam.
Nothing spectacular in terms of his lectures but is always very clear and thoughtful regarding the content on the slides. He assigns very little work and is a solid SOCI professor.
Prof Flynn is my favourite Prof at Carleton; a true gem. Such a genuine guy and really cares about his students. He is very clear with what is on exams and his exams are right off his slides. All around a great prof and would recommend taking any class he teaches.
Prof Flynn is a good guy but lacks ability to respond to important emails on time regarding assignments. Assignments take months to be graded. There is no outline for the assignments so there is no clear expectation for the assignment.
I also had him for SOCI1001 and he's a super chill guy!! The only thing I'd say is it seems like he gets some rude TAs that are so much more serious than him (not that he's not serious, they just do a lot) about deadlines and things like that but aside from that I have 0 complaints
Billy was an awesome prof. My class and discussion group were fully online but he still took the time to connect with the class. He led the last discussion group and asked for feedback on the course. No exam, grade based on 5 papers each worth 15-20%, and the remainder was based on attendance to discussion groups. Provided the free online textbook
Dr Flynn and this course has been my favourite at Carleton. He really cares for his students, and is super understanding. Assignments are extremely easy with no quizzes/midterm/final exam. The content is simple to understand and he uses a lot of real life examples which helps with understanding. If you get the chance to take this course, take it!!!
Decent lectures that are posted on time. Pretty interesting so the lectures aren't too bad. No midterms, exams, tests, or quizzes. There are writing assignments but they're not difficult. Would take it again.
I don't know who grade the assignment(its ta or professor). Maybe the people who graded the assignment didn't read the instruction before. And I don't know how he record the attendance. No names, just zoom link. It's like recording attendance depends on TA's mood. Very slow grade announcements and TA never answer emails.
He is honestly my favourite professor I have had so far. His class is super easy if you just do the work. The readings were not that necessary in my opinion and I rarely did them, though they are interesting to read. in general, he is a really kind guy and is a lovely person to talk to. The lectures were easy to watch and this class is fairly easy.
He was an amazing prof! We didn't have a midterm, exam, or any tests. Just 5(?) papers that were graded pretty easily. He was good at explaining the material as well.
Prof Flynn is one of the most caring professors I have had. He really wants to help students learn and not place too much of a burden on them. He's very accessible, helpful and his lectures are clear.
I loved Flynn. His powerpoints never had too much info on them, only small points that he would expand on which made for really easy note taking. The assignments were all small, never any huge time consuming papers. Do all of them A. He was really chill about extensions too, and when I was sick with strep throat he gave me an extra couple days <3
prof. flynn is a gem of a prof, and i would highly recommend taking him! his lectures were always hilarious. he's not a hard grader necessarily but his TAs sure were
This class was the best/easiest class I've taken at Carleton. The content is interesting so It's not hard to be attentive. Though, participation marks a lot. So be prepared to speak, or reply to discussion questions. GREAT PROF!
Dr. Flynn is a really nice professor. He would teach his lectures like typical lectures. Textbook was an open source one that could be found online. Short and simple readings. Marking rubrics were very clear and would leave detailed instructions and directions for the assignments. Always tried to lift spirits in the classroom.
Lectures were extremely dry, but I think he did the best he could given the material. No final exam, but participation was worth 25% so make sure your TA at least knows your name. Grading instructions were always super clear and if you do the work, it is easy to get a good grade
Ive had a few classes with Billy and he is great! Very approachable, easy to talk to, interesting lectures and clear assignment guide lines. All reading material was provided for us, and they do matter in discussion groups but none were too long. TA's were always great, and I throughouly enjoy and succeed in his classes!
entertaining lectures. no final exam. assignments help you learn and are not difficult.
The prof is amazing and very inspirational ! His class is always entertaining and very lively. I had a great experience.
Billy is an amazing prof. He's so much fun. And the assignments are fairly easy. If you go to your tutorials, you are all good. I went to about half the lectures, and it still didn't matter because there is no final exam.
Professor Flynn is a very chill, caring, and funny. Classes often ended early and he even gave us a week off during midterms season. Readings were very, very light and the textbook was free. No midterms or final exam. Assignments were pretty easy and straight forward. Overall, Great Professor. I Would highly recommend, even as an elective!!
Easy professor.
William Flynn (Billy) as he likes to be called, is such a wonderful prof. Im currently in the third week of second term for my FYSM. He really cares about his teachings and has so much knowledge to share about different interpretations of the world. He is always there to help when you need as well. Highly recommend for soci or FYSM.
I love him because he doesn't assign too much. He doesn't have a final exam, usually just a final essay due a few weeks before the end of the semester. The class was super easy to pass even though i didn't attend lectures. I will say that attendance for tutorials and graded heavily, so definitely go to those.
Professor Flynn is very nice. I had a class with him back in 2021 and it was an online introductory sociology course (SOCI 1002) and he made the course super interesting. As an introductory course it was relatively easy but had to write weekly responses and reflections. Overall, my experience with Professor Flynn was great!
Only went to 2 lectures but he is evidently a very kind prof. The class was just 2 small papers and then a slightly bigger final paper. No exam. The papers did not involve course material whatsoever. Tutorials are graded heavily so go to them all, plus he actually prepares his TAs to help us with assignments.
He is great! Only had 3 assignments and no final. However, you MUST go to all discussion groups, I missed one and got a terrible participation/attendance grade (out of 25%). Overall, assignments were all simple and super easy. Your grade fully depends on your TA, so hopefully you get a good one.
Very sweet and caring. Very easy class. Layed back and understanding. NO exams only essays.
The nicest most caring man I have ever encountered did everything to make the content very engaging and interesting and does not believe in exams or tests which is nice
One of the best profs I had during first year. If you are taking sociology try to take Prof. Flynn!
He is definitely a pirate. His name is William Flynn, but he goes by Billy. If that isn't the most pirate thing I've ever heard, then I don't know what is. He also has a maritime accent, and talked about sailing a few times. Literally a pirate.
Funny guy, taught well, helpful.
Funny guy, chill, easy going, barley any work
My favourite professor during my first semester at Carleton !! If you do the readings (which yes is a lot) but it helps re- enforce your understanding during his lectures and concepts he discusses. His cheesy bad jokes help the pain of the 830 class wakeups. Pay attention to the lectures though the most cause all the exam questions come from there.
Going to lectures are mandatory as he doesn't post his full lecture slides, you must show up to make notes properly for the course content. Textbook was free, online provided by Billy! Make sure to follow the grading criteria exactly in the 2 essays. Course now has a final exam with 50 MC questions in an hour 30min exam. Just follow lecture slides!
A very personal issue I have with him is that he uses filler words too much which makes it a little hard to focus. He doesn't post his slides, so you have to attend class, but everything else is very easy (just two written assignments and a 50-question multiple-choice final exam, which you are given more than enough time to complete)
Love Billy! Show up to lectures and tutorials and you'll do well. You can tell he has so much care and love for the students and the material he teaches, he is beyond inspiring. Highly highly recommend.
He was a nice prof, but I did find myself falling asleep in class, but to be fair it was an 8AM class. Exam was pretty straight forward, but he didn't provide an outline on what to study so I studied a lot more than I should've. I don't think there was any textbook content on the exam, so focus more on class notes.
William is a caring and well-spoken professor. The best way to strive for success in his classes is to attend all the lectures and take good notes, because a majority of the content shared in his classes will apply to the exams. Very light course work with only 2 assignments and one final exam.
Loved having William as my teacher during the 2025 Fall semester, so I was really sad to see that the teacher for SOCI1002B was abruptly changed and that he was no longer the teacher for the Winter Semester. Class doesn't rely on textbook, but lectures/discussion groups. Fun, and caring guy. Assignments based on analyzing video clips. 10/10 teacher
funny prof who has reasonable assignments and easy marker
Very sweet Professor and easy grader if you clearly follow the instructions on the assignments. We had to create a zine, a podcast or any other form of media project (if you propose it to him) based on a piece of sociology research of each student's choice. 25% participation mark, so make sure to come to class and at least try to engage.
