He's really interesting, funny, really loves the subject. I liked his teaching style a lot. Take his course!
Dr. French is a great teacher. I really enjoyed the class and would like to take more classes from him
Pretty easy class, just read the stuff and you will get an A. Lectures are not bad, even for someone as right wing as I.
I LOVE DR. FRENCH!!! He is so great. Class is interesting and lectures are clear and funny. And he's super super nice. Really great. For sure take him
very knowledgable, helpful, entertaining, and super nice. will definitely take another one of his courses.
dr. french is such a badass. seriously, he is a rebel theologian who always has an interesting light to shine on current events, etc. if you are a progressive liberal, you will love him. if not, he may convert you.
He was one of the hardest teachers I ever had. Really MAKES you think and work for your grade. I lOved hiM!
By far, one of the best professors I have ever had. He is extremely liberal...never a bad thing. He goes the extra mile each and every class. Take him!!!
He goes on tangents during his lectures and can be hard to follow. He is a funny guy. But I spent $100 on books for his class. Midterm was a little hard but easy papers to write.

French is one of the best teachers I've had at LUC so far. I wanted to go to lectures because he made them funny, interesting and relative, the reading was pretty interesting, and the tests, papers and quizzes are fair. Take any classes you can from French
If you do the reading, the class is the easiest class ever. Dr. French is so laid back and just goes with the flow. I took as an elective and it was one of the easiest classes I have ever had.
who said he was hot? EWW! OK, anyway, he's VERY liberal, and he REALLY doesn't care what you think, only that you can regurgitate what HE thinks. Don't waste your money on the books, the lecture covers ALL that you will need to know from readings.
I never skipped his class, even when I was waiting for the phone call that would determine my future. Absolutely amazing professor, fabulous class, and just an all around good time. Take him Take him TAKE HIM!
Very good teacher, very left wing but still good. Only real complaint is there is a mountain of books needed for class, just read it and you will get an A
I've had Dr. French for several courses - he is engaged and very passionate about his field. Can be unorganized (late to class, not sure where to go in a lecture, changes when things are due), but has a lot to offer for Social Theology.
His lectures are interesting and funny! midterm and test (study guide) are easy as can be if you can memorize. Great class, i learned alot. no attendence and take good notes.
An absolutely fabulous professor! One of my all time favorites. Truly passionate and knowledgeable. Take his class! Engaging lectures that keep you so interested!
Dr.French is a very nice and help teacher, who gives clear lectures. the midterm is not hard but he is a hard grader and expect a lot of information. But he takes long time to grade quizzes, exams, papers...
He is such a sweet professor. He is passionate about the earth. He showed me another view of the world by the way of theology and philosophy. He relatively easy except you need to read about 5 books, but they are thin and fast reads. I highly recommend!
French can be a funny man at times, but his tests are a ****. I love religion and morals, but this class turned me off to all of that. I ended up with a B- in the class with a good amount of effort.
Great teacher, very knowledgable and passionate. TONs of reading...tough grader
Class was interesting for the whole semester. Somewhat disorganized. I'm a conservative who liked this liberal class a lot. Grading is not bad, tests are not bad. Did not do the readings, but used study guide for tests. French is a good guy, funny, and he cares. Not trying to make your life hard.
be sure to keep up with the reading. he has quizzes almost every week on a chapter he assigns, they're short, but can affect your grade. french is very passionate about his teaching and adds his own funny annedotes to lectures.
Best professor ever! You never get bored because he is so excited about everything. Tests are not hard just study the questions he gives you, they are exact! He just picks a few out of them and plus one major essay question which is not hard if you did the study guide. I recommend him to all.
good professor. kind of crazy, and likes to go off on tangents--but he is rather enjoyable. tests not too bad at all. lectures boring at times, but it was an interetsting class and i learned a lot! do your readings!
awesome awesome awesome
ummm ... he assumes that each student knows everything about religion, down to the details. when questions about clarification are asked, he gaufs and made me feel stupid for not understanding what he hadn't explained. take him for theology, not for peace studies.
I get the impression that he spends about 4 seconds preparing his lectures before class, and they all have to do with the same topic of Israel-Palestine or Us-Them relationships. I dread going to this class: it's SO boring. Although I've heard he's good for THEO 192, he is definetly not that great for upper level classes.

A wonderful professor, and a brilliant man. Show up to class not because you will fall behind but because they are fun and will make you think. May seem repetitive in his arguments, but that is part of his brilliance because most of the stuff he talks about, although varied in topic, all relate to the same basic structures of society.
This class is so easy! I only skimmed the books and answered a few study guide questions 2 days before the midterm and final and got an A. He's an easy grader when it comes to papers and theres really only 2 of them. Quizzes are a breeze and his lectures are interesting (even tho they sometimes have nothin to do w/ the readings) Very little work.
Dr. French is a professor who cares for his students though he won't always know your name. He does re-emphasize important points but it's because they are important. He will always stay after to explain things and give insights. A real joy to have for a professor.
Meh, French is a cool guy but the subject is really impossible to make interesting as much as he tries. He has funny tangent and cgood stories, but truth be told I didn't understand what the class was about on the last day of school so take that for what it's worth.
Oh French...he is an amazing person & prof. I loved this class even though he was kinda boring but French found away to make religion easy to understand. It was nice because the class was not shoving Christianity down your throat. I miss going to class and listening to him talk. Easy grader can talk and get a better grade on midterm. TAKE HIM!!
Few Quizzes, Two Tests, and a six page paper. Really easy if you only do the readings. Don't even have to go to class.
Few Quizzes, Two Tests, and a six page paper. Read, don't go to class. All the stuff he asks of you is from the readings.
Loved this class and prof! Need to do a little reading or skimming, go to class, lectures are very interesting. Did not think Theology could be so relevant. Sweetest prof I have met at Loyola so far! Take this class!
Sure, he's a nice, intelligent man. But I found the class to be completely boring and repetitive. In fact, I fell asleep for almost half the classes. He also goes off topic a lot; otherwise he just spends an entire month talking about one stupid topic...and he was 10 minutes late to class almost every day.
French sometimes gets off topic and goes on tangents but teaches very interesting things. A great theo course if you don't want to focus on religion. Reading is interestingâ??first time I learned and understood the Bosnian War. Grades are fair, he's very lax and allowed me to turn in my paper late with no penalty despite what the syllabus said.
interesting class. read!!!!!! hard grader on written work
Don't do it. Boring and very unorganized. If you're ok with getting a B or C, fine.
Prof. Bill French was one of my main Theology Profs in the mid-late 80's. Took 3 courses with him. I considered him a mentor and always enjoyed his classes. He is a true academic with good practical knowledge.
I have had 4 courses with French including a Tutorial. He is the most engaging Prof at Loyola and always has me laughing. The number of people who do not miss class affirms this. Wish he taught more upper level classes.
Class was boring and grading for assignments seemed random. Often got off topic. Ended up talking about Christianity for the entire semester. Don't take if you want easy core. And if you have a prior knowledge of ecological problems you'll be bored for 3/4 of the class.
This class requires you to read a lot of books and articles; however, you learn a lot from it. 4 quizzes, 1 is dropped. Mid-term, final, and a paper. He goes over much of the the readings, so it is helpful to attend class. The essay portion on the exams is not easy and requires intensive understanding of the readings. It is possible to get an A.
He has no requirements for attendance. You can often afford to miss class and still be completely fine on the quizes midterm and final if you follow his study guides. He's funny and very down to earth. Sometimes he goes off on tangents, but I thought that was his only downside.
He shoves his opinions and views down your throat. He doesn't teach and instead just whines about politics and religion. If he had a filter, his class would at least be mediocre, but trust me, there's no filter for this man.
He is a really nice guy. He often goes off on tangents and lectures by writing one word on the board and circling it many times. If you read all the material and pay attention during class it's an easy A. Though his grading methods can be confusing sometimes.
He's a weird grader. A lot of people in my class who studied a lot and read all of the material got really bad grades and people who didn't do anything got good ones. He's pretty helpful but his lectures are kind of rambley and he has high expectations for essays.
William French is one in a million. His lectures are extremely interesting and are about relevant topics. Although he may seem opinionated, he throughly defends his standing points on issues and accepts student criticism well. Attending class is not necessary, but you just might want to. Great personality; highly recommend.
Only teacher I have rated. TAKE HIM! Professor French is honestly so nice, his class is really chill, he goes over all of the readings in class and highlights the main points you should have picked up on. He is a very quirky guy but he grows on you! He took us on a fieldtrip to the zoo just because. He is hilarious without even trying! Easy A.
Really chill class. The only reading you have to do are the ones that concern his T/F quizzes (which can be challenging even if you read and take notes). Lectures were sometimes dry, but I liked French. I laughed in most classes. He allowed us to write a letter for our final paper, which was cool. I'm sad our "field trip" was cancelled.
Very knowledgeable in the subject matter he is teaching. He keeps the class engaged in the lectures. I took this class on line and would defiantly take another online class with him again. Fair grader and willing to work with you.
Definitely a good choice for an ethics core professor. Lectures were a little disorganized, but not impossible to follow. Assigns articles and reading from books which are interesting and related to his lecture material. Gives true/false quizzes on the readings. One midterm and final exam. Had to write one final paper. Overall a good class.
Professor French is honestly amazing. He is a really intelligent guy and is so passionate about what he is teaching. I wasn't expecting to like Theology, but I ended up really enjoying the class. Make sure to take notes during his lectures: he really drives home the main points of the readings. Also make sure to do the readings for his quizzes.
French is the best!! He has really funny, engaged lectures but he doesn't use PPTs so be ready to listen! There are a lot of readings, but he details the most important parts of each reading in class so I got away with not reading everything by taking close notes and showing up. 2 tests, 1 paper, quizzes. (FYI he's liberal and non-religious)
French is a great professor. He is really funny and engaging. The only thing you need to do in this course to get an A or B is the readings. DO ALL THE READINGS. 4 QUIZZES, MIDTERM, FINAL AND PAPER. The bad thing about this course is that midterm paper and final are 30% each so dont screw up. The course is interesting and relevant and he is nice.!
He's really funny, caring, and adorable but you have to read all the material because the quiz and test questions can be tricky.
Honestly one of the greatest professors I've ever had! He's extremely caring and passionate about the material. He makes the class enjoyable and this makes you appreciate the material being covered. I absolutely loved this class! There is a decent amount of reading involved but it was interesting in my opinion and definitely expanded my knowledge.
French is an amazing professor. he's super engaging and funny, and he really makes you excited to go to class. his quizzes are a little tough, but the tests are easy and he grades papers leniently. definitely take him!
Lectures aren't really organized in a specific manner and WF often goes on (funny) political tangents. Lots of readings but necessary to grasp in order to do well on the few grades there are. Restates a lot of what he finds "important" from various readings which will likely show up as essay questions on exams. Boring content, cool guy, not bad
WF is all around a good prof but his lecture style can be difficult to follow as he goes off on tangents and writes irrelevant words or pics on the board. Lots of reading but you have to read in order to do well on T/F quizzes. Quizzes were a bit difficult & very specific. Final paper and final exam were not too bad but it was a lot of material.
One of the best professor Ive had at Loyola so far! French is incredibly caring and genuinely wants his students to do well. I took his J-term online class and it was a lot of work but he does a really good job of breaking it up and clearly explaining the material. He is hilarious and always makes the class brighter.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU WANNA CRY EVERYDAY!!! Grades way too hard for a core class and only like 5 things are in the grade book.
I loved French as a prof. He was energetic and funny. I found the class super interesting, but if you have little interest in the subject then the lectures will not be for you.
Goes off tangent A LOT. You can read the books, but still not get a good grade on the quizzes. Very picky on the paper that's 30% so you want to make sure you do well on it.
I strongly suggest this professor as you learn more about life and not just the course material. I respect him very much and wish I could take him for my tier two theo courses.
He is an angel. Such a smart loving guy who knows so much and makes theology interesting. I would take him again in a heartbeat.
French is a really nice professor, but is the worst at answering his emails. I haven't been able to get into contact with him at all during the semester, except in class. He also sends lengthy emails sometimes, but they are genuine! Make sure to ask questions and engage!!
I enjoyed most of the readings and the topics, but some of the readings were of his own work which can be a red flag. He goes on tangents often which took away from the class. His class participation was part showing up and part engagement/talking. Class had very few assignments so no room for a poor grade. He has a good sense of humor though.
Peace Studies covers a lot of ground and all of it is interesting. He's a very left-leaning professor but is willing to have debates and be proven wrong on the things he says. You take 10 reading quizzes and get to drop the worst one. If you listen to the lectures, you don't really need to do the readings for exams/discussion.
French is nice and good about taking extensions and stuff w that, but this was one of the most boring classes Ive ever taken. The material itself is interesting, but he goes off on tangents and kinda just rambles the whole time. Lots of readings, but if you go to the lectures you dont really need to do them
Although Mr. French was a good person, the class was very unorganized. The syllabus was often wrong and confusing to keep up with; most of the readings were also very time-consuming, and sometimes the readings and lectures didn't match up whatsoever. Grading is based on reading quizzes, tests, and essays.
One of the most boring teachers Ive had in a while. You dont really have to do most of the reading to get a decent grade. His grading on the papers doesnt make a lot of sense.
Go to class, stay engaged, contribute to discussions and he'll love you. French is extremely knowledgeable and a great lecturer, hard not to like unless you completely disregard the class. 100% would take him again.
WF is a good person, not necessarily a good teacher. He's very understanding on extensions and late work if you come to him early enough. Only one paper worth 30%, and quizzes every week on the reading. Very disorganized lecturer, doesn't use powerpoint or visual aids except random drawings which make it hard to take notes.
Prof. French is such an amazing guy! He is super caring and very funny! The one thing I disliked about this course was his disorganized lectures, they were extremely hard to follow. He doesn't use any slides, so it's just writing on the board, and it's hard to know what will be important for the exams. Weekly quizzes, 2 exams, and a paper!
You have to buy an absurd amount of books, no computers allowed in class, rarely sticks to his lecture topics. He often went on tangents about random things and scribbled on the board a lot. There were 10 quizzes on the readings and the rest were exams and a paper about a topic you choose from the readings.
French was an okay prof. His lectures were confusing and non-linear-- sometimes he would just start talking and I wouldn't be sure if he was lecturing or ranting. He is really passionate about the subject, though, which is always a good thing. His tests were not too bad, just make sure to keep up with the readings. He is very kind about deadlines !
I had to drop his class because I could not figure out what he was teaching during class because he went off topic so much.
William French is a nice guy but his teaching style is not for everyone, he goes off on a random tangent in class completely off topic to what we're learning and it is very easy to get lost, it is almost impossible to take notes because of that. A lot of readings, almost weekly quizzes, 1 midterm and then the final.
If you DO NOT LIKE READING DO NOT TAKE. Personally, it was difficult of me in the course. The professor is well with coming for office hours and feedback. However, the quizzes are all true and false, which I felt was unfair for an ethics course as the question can be viewed in numerous ways. All in all, no homework graded just the quizzes+majortest
French is lecture-heavy and sometimes his lectures don't make the most sense because he is passionate about what he teaches and gets off track. Assigns lots of books but if you read them you should be fine. he is sweet and interesting. knows a lot about the world and it is inspiring to listen to him. hard grader but won't fail you just show up
My opinion of French changed a lot throughout the semester. I originally didn't like him, but he has grown on me a lot and I appreciate his class a lot. He isn't afraid to ask tough questions and discuss difficult ethical topics. I would take him again, he is funny and very very smart. He is what you would expect out of a good college professor.
He's a good guy but his rants can be difficult to take notes for. All quizzes and exams contain majority multiple choice that can mess up your grade
He is such a nice guy but his lectures are a bore to go through and he gets distracted easily. you are graded by tests and quizzes that can easily mess up your grade. Midterm also sucks because you have to write a paper and he is very critical of those. Hard to get a good grade in this class since you are graded by so little.
Dr. French is a really entertaining lecturer who is passionate about class topics. There are few grades in the class, but I would consider him a fair grader. He is somewhat unorganized which can take some getting used to, but you can tell he really cares about student success. A relatively easy honors capstone if you go to class and are engaged.
i didn't like his teaching style but it grew on me. french is very passionate about what he teaches and stopping by after class ends to discuss what he talked about in class (even if its just your opinion) he will instantly remember and like you. he is a tough grader on papers so study and read the books/
I love this guy. Genuinely such a sweet professor and you can tell he loves what he does. There's not much structure to classes, so if that bothers you I'd look elsewhere. Weekly quizzes and papers but no midterms or final. He just wants discussion and engagement. Classes are usually smaller, too, so he'll get to know you and look out for you.
Lectures are next-to impossible to follow or understand. There was no student discussion--and I mean none. Clearly a passionate professor, but brings personal politics into the classroom too often. The amount of homework and weekly quizzes was overboard. An interesting class topic given it was Moral Responsibility, but poorly executed structure.
I do NOT recommend this class or prof. Extremely disorganized, jumps around way too many topics w/o connection. He assigned weekly papers & quizzes "to prove that we did the readings" (this is an honors capstone) and didn't grade them for WEEKS. I found him to be VERY frustrating in his presentation of the course & how he talked to students.
Really enjoyed Dr. French's class! He's very entertaining and passionate about what he teaches. This course has shaped my perspective of the world and has made me reconsider preconceived notions. There are weekly quizzes and short (400-500 word) essays which are time-consuming but not ridiculously hard. He has a great sense of humor and is lenient
Smart guy, but so disorganized and slow to grade (months have passed). None of his PowerPoint stuff has been updated past 2015, which isn't good when we're talking about things like climate change and the environment. Weekly papers, weird quizzes, rarely does participation yet there's a big participation grade? Not a good time.
