There is a lot of reading and his lectures seemed a bit irrelevant to environmental issues...tests aren't too bad as long as you read the 3 HUGE books in this class...i wouldn't recommend the guy although he has good intentions and is a intelligent man
Very good teacher, passionate about the environment. The class changes the way you see government and society.

Freudenberg is VERY smart and VERY organized too - he puts all his notes on the internet, which is nice if you skip a class or two. His tests aren't SUPER hard, but you've gotta keep up. Really interesting class - definitely changed my outlook on the envt
Professor Freudenberg is very organized and engaging. His lecture notes are all available online, so if ever you miss something there is always a point of reference. Despite this, you will never really want to miss class, cause ES is just so damn cool!
such a great professor.... he is always willing to help you.
Overall good class, But if you're a republican or even like money a little bit, you'll want to kill yourself during his lectures.
I was really interested in learning about the environment. The first quarter was interesting but the second quarter the teacher gets a little off topics and turns into a boring economics class and conspiracies of big organizations. Not very exciting
Such a good prof. the only people who didnt like it were super staunch conservatives.... and who likes a staunch conservative? honest. tests are easy if you read. always available to help, very approachable.
You definitely have to go to class and read the books to do well. His lectures are a bit one-sided. He is well organized though.
The tests were easy if you did the reading. All of his notes are online (very helpful). Class was interesting.
He's a very nice man, but it's the TAs you have to watch out for. Some TAs will go over your paper with you while others don't. the tests are okay, he drops the lowest score at the end, so your grade comes out pretty good. lots of boring, redundant reading about water and dying off.
freudenberg shows obvious knowledge about the topic he is teaching, but fails to present it in an interesting way. his lectures are dull and are hard to stay awake for. also, he expects you to have previous knowledge on subjects he talks about before he introduces them.
BORING. I love ES - I'm an ES major. But this man puts me to sleep. Tests are a lotta material - a lotta reading/studying - you need to work to get an A - but hey I didn't read a thing and got a B-.
This professor is extremely helpful on an individual level if you take the time to visit his office hours. Getting some one on one time proved to be beneficial because some of his theories are really complex. Plus he learns your name which is always nice.
Great teacher but lectures are hard to follow in class. Office hours really help. Didnt read any of the books just learned what they told us we need to know and went over the lectures, got an A.
Overall I enjoyed the class. It is not difficult to get a decent grade without much effort. The books are dry and repetitive. The first half of the course is much more interesting than the second.
the books were interesting although dry like hell. freudenburg is a good lecturer but speaks in a monotone. the concepts are interesting and the tas are nice but not too helpful with class concepts but good with the books
Such a good professor. I came into the class knowing nothing about ES, and still managed to get an A. There is a lot of reading and it helps, but is not totally necessary. Try to get a good TA cuz most things are reviewd in section. Lectures are key since he covers a lot of material!
You have to show up and pay attention and do the assignments, but he is really really interesting. He talks about things that are current and local. The books are easy and the class is straightforward.
i changed out of a chicano studies class cuz i fell asleep the first lecture n the prof called me out.. so i scrambled for another class n feel i found the one i was meant to take. he totally prepares for the lectures, which are ALL online, TAs are great enviro ppl, totally down for the cause! talk to him n the class will be much more interesting and relevant. hes always in his office doing reasearch and talking to newspapers and trying loves energy n passion! which i got so that helps

All his presentations are online so listen and pay attention, and don't worry about taking notes. A little bit "anti-human" but most enviromentalists are. Do the reading pay attention and all will be fine. BTW very well puit together lectures worth sitting through.
Good but a lot of reading
Fredenburg is a really good professor and very passionate about his subject. I went into the class with no real feelings on environmental studies but his lectures really made me appreciate the area of study. i thought the class was interesting and not too difficult. i enjoyed this class and would recommend it.
This class is pretty interesting and really easy. All the notes are online so you don't really need to go to class. Plus, he's way hot!!!!!!
He's a great teacher, and his class is very easy to follow. Theres only one essay and its 8-10 pages long, but u have so much time to do it. He also drops yur lowest test grade.
Professor Freudenburg is one of the best instructors I have ever had the privilege of studying under. The passion he has for his subject shows through his lectures and is contagious as it spreads interest to all who take the time to listen.
Excellent professor! For perspective, people clapped after most his lectures, and usually for good reason. There's a lot of reading, but it isn't that bad.
I loved this professor. He was so passionate about this class. Typically students clapped after each of his lectures. He is a genious.
This guy is so genuinely in love with what he is teaching. Lectures are interesting and relevant, the readings are long but easy, the essay is doable, and the ta's are helpful. I've got no complaints.
Freudenberg is an amazing professor. His environmental studies 1 class is taught very well and he provides so much information and examples to really come off clearly to the class.
He is has a passion for the subject and makes it interesting. Tests aren't too bad. There's just one 8 paged research paper. You could get away with not doing all the reading
I don't think I've ever respected anyone as much as I respect this man. Knowledgeable is a gross understatement when it comes to describing Freudenburg's level of expertise in this field. It gave me great satisfaction to shake his hand after the final and (finally) tell him just how amazing I think he is. Take this class.
a good guy and a pretty interesting class. he has a tendency to overcomplicate things, making up his own names for concepts that everyone already knows, but other than that i learned a lot. the research paper wasnt bad at all, and i got away with not doing most of the reading. just dont mention his dad. he cried...
Freudenburg is a good teacher his lectures are very stright forward and incorperates and effecient use of powerpoint which he leaves fully availible online. He made the class interesting and brought a unique view to environmental problems. The course is easy and you may not even have to take the final. Ultimatly hes a interesting to listen to.
Very well researched and presented lectures.
Very good teacher. Resonable work load. People usally would clap after the lectures. Take this guy.
He is an amazing, amazing man. I loved this class and this professor. He is extremely helpful and nice. He is completely approachable. You can tell that he sincerely cares about teaching and about the subject. TAKE HIS CLASSES!!
good teacher. fell asleep most of the time. but from what i remember the times i was awake it was understandable.
EXCELLENT TEACHER! He is very passionate and interested in what he teaches. Recommend printing slides offline because its hard to keep up and write everything down. This class was so interesting and fun! Paper seemed intimidating but didn't turn out to be bad if you work with the TA's. I wish I could take this class again!
Amazing class- I had a reallly helpful TA, really interesting topics, lectures that people clap after, great visuals, many opportunities to raise your grade (2 midterms and an optional final, 1 paper). Got me really interested in the major- take this class, and get to know Freudenberg, he's pretty much awesome.
Freudenburg is a brilliant guy and a wonderful lecturer. His ES 1 lectures were always quite inspiring. ES 1 was a great class, although the Catton book is horribly boring and outdated, also the tests were embarrisingly easy for anyone with any environmental knowledge.
Great personality and class. He inspired me to major in Environmental Study. Definitly take it!
awesome lecturer and very passionate about what he teaches. All his lectures are posted online. You could usually print them out before class. Midterms are pretty easy as long as you study for them and the research paper is not that bad at all. overall EXCELLENT class.
The most entertaining and brightest teacher/prof I have ever had. The work load is very easy, and pretty interesting. Take his class!
You can drop one test, including the final, so that was generous. The rest was boring and biased. I don't reccommend the class unless if it is required for something. Over half of the class was asleep every lecture by the end...
I really enjoyed this class. tests are 50% lecture, 50% reading, so its important to read and retain. subject matter is relevant to todays issues. attendance is important for section. paper is pretty hard to get through, but if you know your stuff, its not too bad.
a mind opening, informative class although not exactly what you may expect... i recommend it
I wouldn't recommend taking this class unless you are interested in the subject - the environment. He was very biased and the lectures were really boring, half the class was always asleep. All of the notes were available on line and you could drop your lowest test grade, which was nice.
IMO, the class wasn't very interesting; professor is great tho. the class mostly took a theoretical view on environmental problems which got boring. Essay wasn't too hard. Discussions are mandatory (he takes the number of sections you miss, cubes that number, then takes that percent off your grade). I'm happy I took this class, tho; really valuable
amazing teacher! he is funny and is really good at keeping a "boring" lecture entertaining
Great teacher, interesting. Good slides.
Books terribly long; he's a funny guy, just has an incredible boring class, and this mic. is tinted so it's hard to hear. His notes goes superfast---not long enough to fully comprehend what to expect. Tests are tricky.
great teacher. extremely influential and passionate about his subject. if you are interested in the environment and current issues surrounding it, you must take this class. lectures are insightful and books are very interesting; you just need to be interested in this field. highly recommend!
He's a good teacher. His tests are a bit hard but he gives a 2nd chance by letting you drop one. The class is fast but interesting and it does take studing for
amazing...the only way to describe him!
The lectures are really intense, so be prepared to take notes. Lots of studying is required, and the books are pretty long ans tedious. Whether or not you're in to environmental studies, you will learn a lot. dont walk out in the middle of lecture, he hates it!
He was a really good teacher. I thought the class was really interesting but a lot of information is covered and it is a bit difficult to keep up with both him and the readings. definitely go to section. He puts his lectures online which is helpful and he throws out your lowest out of 3 test grades which was cool.
Easy class as long as you internalize environmentalist logic. His lecture material is cake, there is no real reason to go to class as long as you check the slides online. But you need to read the books in order to do well on the tests (50 question multiple choice)
Lectures can be really great sometimes and really boring other times. Don't leave class early because he will glare at you and make comments about you. His multiple choice tests are tricky but out of 2 midterms and 1 final you drop the lowest one so you don't have to take the final if you don't want to. Paper is research based but pretty easy.
Read the first book (Ocershoot)but the second book (Cadillac Desert) has a study guide and TAs normally go over the study guide. I didn't even open the second book and I got an A on the midterm that had questions about the book on it.
This teacher is ok... the TA I had was terrible... she didn't really know much and didn't have much to say. I didn't think the tests were THAT easy... but they are pretty doable without alot of work.
Lecture notes are extremely random. In order to (somewhat) understand them you MUST attend lecture even tho they're online. Terms are hardly ever defined. Readings hav very little to do w/the lectures. I fell asleep like every class so I stopped going. I only read the first 25% of the books too. I scraped a B+ only because of doing well in section.
If you're into environ. studies, you should like him. He has ideas that you probably haven't heard before, and his lectures are interesting. You do have to do a fair amount of studying for a good grade, however.
This guy is great, he loves the material he teaches, and he is funny too! Attendance is not mandatory for the lecture, but you cannot miss the discussion or else you lose a significant amount of your grade. But he makes me love the material even more than I already did. 10/10
He is the best! His lectures aren't mandatory, but extremely interesting so i went to all of them anyways. Section IS mandatory. Also, he drops your lowest test score out of 2 midterms and 1 final, which is really nice. he's a really nice guy and an amazing professor.
Freudenburg is probably one of the best lecturers at UCSB so I would recommend going even though the slides are online. He drops the worst score out of the first two midterms and the final which is a big bonus because some people don't have to take the final! I read Overshoot but did not read Cadillac Desert and still did fine.
Freudenberg is a great professor, always willing to help and such a nice guy. ppt lectures hard to copy, so just listen in class and go over his powerpoints later online. tests pretty easy, always multiple choice. buy first textbook (catton) but don't bother getting the 2nd one (cadillac desert). TAs all very informed and helpful as well.
Freudenurg is a great lecturer, and his slides are well organized. Don't bother trying to take notes becuase he moves too fast to copy everything down and all the info is online. This class is great intro to environmental issues and the problem-solving techniques necessary to solve them
Really great professor. Very interesting subject material and puts lecture notes online so don't bother trying to copy them in class. Two midterms and one final all worth 100 points but he drops the lowest so it's not even necessary to take the final if you do well on the midterms. I definitely recommend the class!
He gives very good lectures. He's also a very good lecturer, which keeps the lecture interesting. He buys scantrons for you for exams.
Wonderful class, wonderful professor. Freudenburg is extremely intelligent and passionate about what he teaches. I took the honors section, so I got to know him better and he truly is a great guy. The subject matter is very interesting also.
i took Enviromental studies my fall quarter of freshmen year, it was a pretty easy b+ but you had to go to lecture in order to understand his theories which were both original and entertaining for the most part.Besides a few sleep-inducing lectures the class overall was good and worth taking as a GE
interesting lectures, easy-ish class. paper wasn't too bad, tests were pretty easy. drops lowest test grade. provides a new perspective on environmentalism. i'm glad Cadillac Desert is on the reading list. he told us he had cancer at the start of the quarter, hope he pulls through!
Amazing professor! He knows his stuff and most lectures are interesting. Attendance is mandatory to understand the material even though he posts up his lectures. I didn't really read the books and still got a C+/B-. The essay and exams were alright. Overall, I'd recommend this class to anyone!
extremely interesting. don't know if he will teach next quarter, but if he does it is well worth your while to take a class from him.
This teacher is phenomenal. Best yet is that he's going through a lot of personal ordeals and he still manages to be my favorite class and favorite teacher ever. I got an A- with no effort at all (I didn't show up to class a lot, I didn't read either book, and I didn't do the EC), but I still loved going to his lectures. TAKE FREUDENBERG!!!
He's a boss.
great teacher. people clap at the end of his lectures
AMAZING! People applaud at the end of every lecture. A great speaker and great powerpoints. You need to go to class to understand the lectures. Half the material on tests come directly from lectures. Great class, not too hard, but extremely interesting. He is very funny, charismatic, and engaging.
Freudenberg is Stoic, If you are a freshman looking for a an interesting class that will helpfully welcome you to college, take this class, you will learn a lot and learn from one of the most respected environmental scientist to ever study es
Professor Freudenburg was an incredible human being. At his memorial a colleague mentioned that he always wanted chili peppers on this website. His brilliant mind and true compassion will be greatly missed.
Rest In Peace
I am so blessed and honored to have had him as my professor. He always tied everything into real life situations. His words will always linger in my life. Freudenberg, you will be greatly missed.
Dr. Freudenburg was a special soul. He received applause after each class. He broke out in song on occasions. He could bring you to laughter and tears in the same lecture. UCSB and the world will miss this kind-hearted, generous and wise man. Rest in peace professor.
I was lucky enough to have taken my first environmental studies lectures with Professor Freudenburg during my freshman year. Because of him, I was able to see past the textbook and into the real world of which he spoke with great passion. Freudenburg will surely be missed as one of the greatest professors, and people, ever to have taught at UCSB.
Prof. Freudenburg was the best teacher I have ever had in my life. His lectures were always followed by applause from students. His passion for trying to open the minds of young people shown through in how he attempted to expose you to the "bigger picture" of environmental issues. I was fortunate enough to be in his final class. He will be missed.
