Goes over concepts in class, but the tests are in depth and hard to understand. He is extremely rude as well. Lectures are boring and he rambles. He is very hard to understand. I basically taught myself.
This class is awful. Know all the terms of biology and get ready to have lots of your time taken up!
Lectures are fast-paced and it is hard to get all the notes down even if you print out the handouts. If you ask him to slow down or repeat something he will just move forward and leave you behind. Reading the book does nothing as almost all of the test questions come from the notes and the multiple choice questions are very specific and tricky.
His tests are very difficult. I studied over all of the notes for over 10 hours a time and got C's and low B's. Luckily he scales to make up for his difficult questions. Don't skip class because it's difficult to catch up on notes. He also rambles a lot and all but forces you to attend videos for little credit. Terrible class. Avoid if possible
This professor's tests are so incredibly hard. I studied for one test for 8+ hours and got a C. His material is WAY beyond what any BIOS 101 professors are teaching on campus. Do not take his class; take any other professor for BIOS 101. If all else fails, wait for next semester to take this class from another professor.
Worst professor I've had on campus. Never responds to emails. I'll never take another class of his
Tests are super hard! Material is way to tough for an entry level Biology course. I will never take a class with him again!
I found this class to be wonderful, easy and information presented is easy to comprehend and has real world applications. Do not believe the other commenters, I barely studied and got an A+ and can only assume they average grade of a D they list is due to their own personal inabilities and lazy study habits. Biology is for future professionals
Glider is dry and boring. There is an enormous amount of information on the tests. I do not recommend him.
Great man if you go to talk to him one on one. However, his class is extremely hard. There is about 17 notes packets to memorize per test. You have to study 10+ hours to feel confident for test. Since he is a professional he does not think much into explaining concepts. I would take from the other professors where an A is guaranteed.
Dr. Glider is awesome I don't know why so many comments are negative. He's super nice and very helpful, but you need to ask for it. GO TO THE SI SESSIONS. The TA, John, was rude but when Glider was there it was great. Either way SI is very helpful. Study the assignments from the unit for the test and you'll do great. Common sense/high school level
I would not recommend Glider. He is boring and it is really hard to stay concentrated during his lectures. Most of the time I feel like he doesn't know what he is talking about. He gets mad when you ask the TAs questions about assignments too.
Glider is not a bad professor or lecturer by any means. However, he is an introvert in the most literal sense so don't think he hates you when you go talk to him. This is a class where you are going to have to work very hard and be ready to learn. The tests cover everything you learn though most are about concepts rather than details. GO TO CLASS.
Glider doesn't seem very helpful at first, but you have to ask for it and at the right time. Otherwise, don't bother. Lectures are fairly boring and run on the long side. DO THE BONUS WORK! It will come in handy later. Tests are difficult, but good notes and online materials will help a lot.
Incredicble teacher, as long as you stay on your work, theres nothing to complain about. He is straight forward and gets straight to the point. Just make sure you stay on track and the course shouldnt be terribly hard. Overall great guy with cool personality.
He isn't a good professor. I used to love biology and now I finished the semester not liking bio At all it. I wish I would have picked a different class. Very boring classes
Initially, I was not a fan of Dr. Glider, but I found out he wasn't so bad. If you do the study questions and study how he tells you to, you should be fine. Don't bother reading the textbook to review for exams, focus on the study questions and highlight study question answers in the notes. Overall, doable class if you put in the work.
His class was fairly boring. It was all lecture. He would give you lecture handouts with things that needed to be filled in from the power points. Not to difficult as long as you got all of the notes and did the study questions.
Lectures are long and boring. He gives you lecture outlines so you're not constantly writing, though. I didn't like that he randomly threw study questions at us (a quiz thats 30-50 questions long) and gave us a two day window to complete them. He never updates grades, so I have no idea what grade I have going into the final. Tests are difficult.
You get what you put into this class. The study questions & concept maps are EXTREMELY helpful for exams. I found a lot of help in going to the optional Supplemental Instructions that were 2 days a week. They really helped to condense things. It's easy to follow along with his outlines in class, but if you miss class, it really puts you behind.
He's not very organized, often emails you the night before telling you to print the lecture outline for class the next morning. Extremely hard tests, way too difficult especially for an entry level class. Puts grades in late.
very rude, easy to fail
Super funny old guy. NOT tech savvy. Therefore you spend half the class figuring out the computer and laughing. Very descriptive in lecture. Offers help to students. Super nice. (Can get grumpy when you approach him at bad times, like when hes figurin out the technology)
This guy created his own website for literally no understandable reason. He would make you go watch his videos other than lecture time. His website does not work very well and one of my assignment was not recorded so I got a 0 for that one. He has some serious English proficiency issues (bad grammar, spelling, over use of abbreviations)
Used to love Biology and now I hate it. He really is an awful teacher. Even after meeting with him and asking him what I was doing wrong, I still suck. Asks for all this detail in study questions that he doesnt give in notes. Literally did so bad because I wasnt detailed enough because his notes are crap.
1) TYPE YOUR NOTES!!!!!! Study questions will be a piece of cake! 2) Doing amazing on his tests (and i mean 100%+) will not guarantee an A, its literally due to his study questions (which he is very specific about the answers when grading). 3) Go over the study questions and notes for the tests (thats what i did and never got below a 97 on a test)
Glider gives students all the materials needed to pass. He also provides lecture outlines that you fill in during the lecture that basically dictate the entire course. If you don't do these, then I think it'd be difficult to do really well, but overall he is very knowledgeable. The only thing is he doesn't respond to emails.
He offers four tests and the test averages are often 70% after he curves them. Students tend to do poorly on exams. He also offers study questions which are the other part of your grade, however, he randomly posts them and has them due in just a few days after, not prepared at all and very intimidating.
Terrible, cannot write properly on board. Just rambles on until time to leave. Very unorganized. Made appointment with prof and he did not show up. Pushes questions only he can answer to TA's. I have learned more from other students rather than the teacher. Teacher belongs in a lab rather than teaching. Does not relate with students.
Hes a nice guy, but his class is undoubtedly the most boring science class Ive ever taken. Lectures were very uninteresting (and this is coming from a science major). Hes not very tech-savvy, and wastes a lot of time getting PowerPoints to work. Unless you truly study and pay attention in lectures, exams will be difficult for you.
I would not recommend this class to anyone. The tests are terrible and not go with the notes taken in class. Continually gives online homework and is very unorganized.
Do not take this class. Prof Glider is very unorganized and is not clear with the material he is teaching. His tests do not match the lecture notes and they are very difficult.
He has some quirks (loves to talk about west ne) but explains the material in a way that makes sense. the homework is graded in a confusing way with double decimals that dont make sense (ex: 9.58/11). but the every test is curved and he gives extra credit every now and then. if you show up and pay attention to lectures you will be fine
Dr. Glider is the worst. He does not respond to emails, does not show up to planned class events/meetings, or explain the material in a way that makes sense. The tests are really difficult and the assignments take hours to complete. He was didnt know how to use the technology and he was rarely prepared for class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Easy to follow PowerPoints that outline what you need to know. He's an intelligent guy and you can tell he has a lot of passion for what he does.
If you are taking Biology at UNL I would advise not taking it with Glider. His tests are extremely difficult because they are so specific. Besides doing study questions there isn't really a good way to study for the tests and be prepared.
I would highly highly recommend not taking a biology class with Dr. Glider. His exams are very difficult and very hard to study for. The only other points you can receive besides the exams are study questions. The study questions are very strenuous and take hours at a time to do. If you have to take a biology class like I did, DO NOT TAKE GLIDER.
horrible class. the tests are hard and impossible to study for and the study guide says basically "study everything", class is just listening to a lecture. Only other chance to up your grade is study questions which are equally horrible and hard and take hours to do. Passing with a C is great which is just terrible because this is a 101 class.
One of the easiest classes I have taken all of college. He makes his tests straight from his handout packets and curves the tests about 4% and gives extra credit! I highly recommend this class if you're willing to do the work you will get an A. Also Dr. Glider is very helpful and willing to help you outside of class!
This is by far the worst professor Ive had at UNL. If youre not good at science do not take this class with Glider. The study questions take hours to do and are so specific even if you think you know what the answer is youll probably get some credit taken off some how. Tests are impossible to get a good grade on even if you study a ton.
He is a nice professor, and cares a lot about biology. However, I would not take this course again with him, seeing as I might have to retake the course. There is a lot of work in the class, and the tests are very difficult. I study two weeks prior to the test, everyday, and still end up failing them. The material on the test is confusing.
really hard class. don't do it first semester freshman year it is NOT a good warm up class. There is a lot of information no one needs to know (sorry I dont care about bugs in Nebraska) he is passionate about what he teaches but is not very clear on what he is teaching he expects you to know a lot before coming. will learn tough subjects very fast
Lecture is very boring and tests and study questions are extremely difficult. Try not to take it with glider if you absolutely need to take bio. Only good thing is extra credit is offered and if ur borderline of getting a higher letter grade by a point hell bump ur grade up if you had good attendance. Very challenging class for 100 level
This class is basically an advanced high school biology class, so if you took diff/honors biology you'll definitely do fine. Glider's lectures were insanely boring, there isn't a ton of homework but that makes it so the only graded material is study questions (out of class quizzes) and tests.
Glider gave a lot of information during lecture, anytime I emailed him he took forever to respond. Tests were very difficult and I didn't like the way he made the study questions, as they took about 2 hours to complete.
bad exams, useless website, a hard course for a 100L beginners class. I don't recommend taking his class.
This class was the hardest class I have ever taken and Glider was terrible at explaining the information. I changed my major after this class because it was so bad. So many people failed the class, so good luck trying to get a passing grade.
Avoid BIOS101 with Professor Glider at all costs. UNL has one of the worst Biology professors I've ever seen. No structure and does not care to improve a student's interest in the subject. Generating interest is necessary in order to do well in any subject. Glider is easily one of the laziest professors at UNL. Disgrace to education.
I definitely do not suggest taking a class taught by this professor. He is very unorganized and assignment due dates were not consistent through the semester. He was not respectful of the students' time and tried to teach more material after class was dismissed.
Took this course at CPBS and I loved it.
By far the absolute worse professor I have ever had. He is so unorganized and does not care about his students at all. He clearly just comes to campus each day to get a paycheck. All you do in his lecture is sit and take notes. He is not at all friendly to his students or even his TAs. His tests are long and very hard. Do NOT get him for any class.
He isn't that bad at teaching but lectures can get boring at times. Tests are pretty hard. Go to the SIs!!! They help with the study questions which helps you understand the material more! As long as you go to the lectures and really study and review material, you will get a good grade.
Glider is a misunderstood dude. He's pretty funny if you listen close. I get why most people dislike him though, he's dry, and grades super hard. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. ALL OF IT. I promise you this will help you so much. GO TO THE SI SESSIONS. It'll help you a lot. Overall, you have very little points in the grade book, so extra credit helps a lot.
If you get to know Dr. Glider, he is nice and wants you to succeed if you work hard. Tough grading, difficult tests, and many homework assignments. Go to the SI and do the extra credit because these are very good opportunities to help your grade. If you tend to struggle or aren't driven in school, I would advise not taking this class with Glider.
Glider is really misunderstood. He's actually a sweet old guy who can be super funny with his dry humor. With that being said, his tests are pretty hard so you'll need to study a lot ahead of time. Go to Supplemental Instruction (SI)!! It will help you immensely with the study questions and overall understanding the material. You gotta put in work!
tests are incredibly difficult and the study questions he assigns are very hard as well. stay away from this fella if you can
very tough grader, doesn't really update grades often so it's hard to know where you're at. please do not take this professor unless you want a challenge
Prof. Glider is a good person and wants his students to do well but he makes this difficult. His lectures are unorganized and difficult to understand and the homework and exams are very difficult even with immense studying. If you miss class you're screwed because he doesn't post the notes anywhere or use canvas; takes forever to grade things.
Glider gets a bad rap but I actually enjoyed the class. His exams are tough but he gives you exactly the materials you need to prepare. If you study how he advises and pay close attention to the homework you will be prepared for exams. All the information you need to know is given in lecture and he does not post the notes so it is important to go.
William Glider is one of the most understanding professors. I was worried to take his class due to the other ratings he had. However, I had another final that interfered with his and he let me make the final up. The tests are super hard and you will have to study and put in extra work. The lectures and study sessions are helpful so attend them!
Glider doesn't answer emails, his class is very hard to do well in because everything must be in his words. He adds a lot of extra comments not on slides that are on exams, he also goes very fast. He takes a long time to grade. Overall wasn't a fan of this class.
He didnt give the lectures to you if you missed a class. I do not recommend this class to anyone. I emailed him and it took him many hours to respond to the email. The supplemental instruction sessions were in a time period that I was busy. I asked him to see if he could do a different time. He never did. He was an extremely tough grader.
Maybe this would be different if it was inperson but his class has been my worst experience at UNL by far. I got covid and missed a test+a quiz, and when I emailed him he only responded to say I would make it up on the final and did not respond to any follow up emails or any unrelated issues I had. Add to that his website for grade is from the 90s
His bio zone website sucks and he doesn't use canvas. His grading is very hard and what is on the exam he doesn't teach. The study questions are also extremely difficult and hard to do.
Lots of homework, you even cannnot find it one canvas.
I took this class at CPBS. It was a mess; so many things went wrong within this class. I would not recommend anyone take it. It is stressful because it is a three week class, and it is filled with difficult concepts. Glider talks way too much and doesn't know what is going in in the class. TA's do everything for him and know more about the class.
I took LIFE121 at CPBS with Dr. Glider this summer. He is super passionate about western Nebraska, and overall was a nice guy. However, he made the TAs do almost everything for him, and got annoyed with them whenever something didn't go to plan. The assignments were fun, and it wasn't a very hard class. Just wish he was more organized.
Glider is an okay teacher. Study questions are your main focus and what the test are based off of. The book is dumb, do not get, we never use and it will not help on the test. He does not use canvas which is meh but biozone still gets you through the semester. TA is more help! He is a nice guy though, be nice this is what he takes interest in.
Not a good professor at all, very lecture heavy and just expects you to know everything right off the bat. Doesn't assign enough things to do to get your grade up, so if you fail a test, you are pretty much done for.
If youve read the other comments Im sure you guys have a good idea of what this man is like. Instead of ranting about why I rated him the way I did, I am gonna give you guys some tips on how to survive. 1) go to si 2) study by sections 3) watch YouTube videos on each section 4) email TA instead of prof 5) do not buy the textbook u wont use it.
Disrespectful to the TAs when they try to help him with technology, each hw assignment is very long and graded harshly. Expects you to know a lot of the material already; says everything you need for tests/hw is on the lecture outlines he provides, and not in offhanded comments he makes. that is not true. you only know your grade after each test.
Although he is a nice guy and friendly, I would not take this class again. He doesn't grade on canvas, but uses a third-party site for all grades and homework. The homework takes a very long time and if you accidentally close the tab or leave it for too long, you have to start over. His tests are tough and he doesn't provide great review materials
Glider is a fine human and is very smart-- however, he's an AWFUL professor. Exams are wildly difficult, if you HAVE to take this course with this professor, GO TO SI, and make sure to do well on study questions!!! For exams, in your notes, he will star things, study those things in particular and form a good relationship w him. Do all EC!!
GUYS IF YOU WANT TO DO GOOD JUST STUDY THE STUDY QUESTIONS. IT IS THE SAME FORMAT AS THE EXAMS. final was hard.. textbook not worth getting. anyways to do good just memorize the study questions, they are very specific and similar (VERY SIMILAR) examples will be on the exams. Study for at least a whole week
The lectures are so boring and are not helpful at all but attendance is mandatory. The tests are very hard to study. The study questions are the same format so I would just focus on those. He says he cares for the students but doesn't really ever reach out. Try to avoid taking a class with him at all costs.
DON'T WAIT UNTIL EXAMS TO STUDY! Attendance is mandatory, he does not post completed notes so you must take them in class. Exams are very difficult if you don't study/apply yourself. Nice guy, stuck in old teaching methods and is not looking to expand his teaching methods. Lab for this class is easy.
Attendance is not mandatory but he will use it to scale your grade up at the end of the semester if your grade is within 1% of the next letter grade. His exams are very tough, you have to fully understand the material and diagrams to do well. It is annoying that he does not use canvas to grade things, your grade is only updated after every exam.
Discriminated against my gender (female) and my chronic medical condition. Talked behind my back to other students about me and said condition. Just a terrible human who has no empathic values. Disappointed that the university is associated with someone like this.
This class made me change my major completely. The lectures make you want to go to sleep. The study questions are long and do not make sense, these are the only thing you get graded on besides exams. Do not take this class unless you have to.
One week was all I needed to realize that I needed to drop this course and register for the other BIOS101 instructor. Does not respond to emails. Does not know how to work the tech equipment. Uses a super weird website instead of Canvas for all assignments. Super late testing times for no reason. Disparaged his TA on day 1. Avoid at all costs.
This professor does not read any emails, and you can only see him in person if you write in a notebook at the front of the classroom. You only have tests and study questions- which are extremely difficult. Attending class is required because he does not post the lecture slides.
I would NOT recommend him. You only have hard exams + study questions as your grade which makes it difficult to keep your grade up. The lectures make you fall asleep, and hard to stay attentive in his class.
TO PASS THIS CLASS. STUDY THE STUDY QUESTION AND MEMORIZE THOSE. THE STUDY QUESTIONS ARE HARD BUT ONCE GRADED ANSWERS ARE POSTED. USE THOSE. THE FINAL IS HARD GOOD LUCK.
This class is difficult, if you take notes, do the study questions, and extra credit you should do ok in the class. The first test is hard but if you study hard you should be set for the rest of the class. Attendance is important, I missed 3 classes which which was enough to round my grade. study from study questions, the final is easy
