Very nice guy. Holds a lot of review sessions before the test and is willing to work around people's schedules. GO TO THESE REVIEWS. They will help you learn the material that will be tested because he kind of hints at important concepts.

Nicest guy on the face of the planet. Holds many review sessions and he actually WANTS you to make an A! He's ALWAYS willing to help at any time you're available. Exams are very very fair, so if you get anything less than a high B, you're not trying.

Okay, this is a hard class, but the teacher makes the class very easy. Make sure you read the notes he gives out and make sure you go to all the reviews! Also, read the review questions because those will be the test questions! Test#2 is the hardest, but the final is very easy even though it is cumulative. Book helps a bit, but not worth the $$.

Gurley is the best! On the first day of class he told us his class was going to be boring and tough to slog through but we would all get A's. He pretty much stuck by his word, Genetics is kind of an overwhelming class at times but he always tries to keep it lighthearted. He's perky and generally a good guy who cares for his students

Definitely don't need the book. If you memorize the slides (which is actually a lot of info) and watch his weekly reviews online, an A is pretty easy to get. Dr. Gurley is hilarious which helps because the class itself is boring and kind of a pain (pretty much grad level genetics). Gurley is awesome though so I definitely reccomend this class.

Dr. Gurley is the only professor that can make this course interesting. But he does a good job of it. He makes it extremely easy to get a good grade and posts all the lectures online so you don't need to come to class. Don't buy the book, just use the slides and listen to what he says will be important. He wants you to do well!

Dr. Gurley is the best professor I've had my entire time here at UF (and I'm a senior). He genuinely cares about students and their performance and is a great lecturer (who should moonlight as a comedian). He puts his lectures online along with helpful reviews. Keep up with the material and an A is within your reach. I definitely recommend him!

Amazing professor, I could listen to him for hours! He makes the class so much fun. There is humor in everything he says, yet everything that comes out of his mouth is very relevant. He jokes in such a way that helps you remember the material that is being taught. I absolutely LOVE this guy!!!!!

Exams are on ProctorU, he will extend if it conflicts with other students exams. Lectures are online so attendance is not mandatory. Don't expect to go over the lectures last minute before exam & expect to get a good grade, spread out the lecture vid. Is crystal clear on material & likes to mention his cat from time to time. Great professor!!

This class is very difficult. The professor is amazing and he really cares about his students and does a great job at explaining the material. That being said, I still failed the class and need to take it again. The material is very confusing, much harder than the genetics you learn in biochem.

Professor is very good, but this class is hard. I got a C, but I blame myself for taking it in an overloaded semester. You cannot study the slides on the last weekend before the test and do well in this class. You can get a C by doing that, though. As difficult as biochem.

HARDEST UNDERGRAD GENETICS AT UF. You read that correctly people. (+) attributions: - cares about every single student; - does not make sarcastic remarks if a student does not understand something right away; - offers to mentor his students if they are struggling; - entertaining and enlightening to listen to/watch (-) attributions: NONE!!!!

Funniest and most enthusiastic professor I have ever had at UF. The class is detailed but Professor Gurley pretty much covers it all. Just takes a bit of time to get it all, but his recorded lectures are so helpful. Always available to assist and was the best way to end my career here.

He genuinely wants students to do well. The only problem is that there's way too much information which is why the averages are usually low. The material is not rocket science it's just a lot to take in. Lectures can get frustrating to handle because they're long and he speaks very slowly. Any science class requires effort so there's nothing "easy"

The class is difficult, but an A is definitely achievable. Watch the lectures carefully. He tells you every time something will be on the exam, so make sure you note those points. The material isn't that interesting, but Gurley is great and made it more fun. Take Genetics with him. Start studying the ppts a few days before exams and you'll be fine.

Dr. Gurley is one of my favorite professors. The tests make up a large portion of your grade but he's very clear about what will be on the exam and what won't be. The lectures can be a little dense but he's pretty funny and he's good at making things really clear. I'd definitely recommend taking molecular genetics with him; I truly enjoyed it.

Very understanding and awesome professor. Really cares about his students. Don't be afraid to ask him for further understanding. His lectures are entertaining and really cover what you need to know for exam.

Such a kind professor - entirely understanding, one of the only professors I've had who is able to recognize own mistakes and correct accordingly. 4 exams, you can retake the lowest one. Though I didn't get an A, it's absolutely within reach - the material is just really dense so make sure to give ample time for studying.

Dr. Gurley is able to break down a difficult concept like molecular biology into easily digestible bits. His Exams aren't that difficult as long as you study the material in advance and even then you have the option to make up your lowest exam. Overall he's one of my favorite professors at UF.

Exams are difficult, you need to work hard in order to achieve a good grade in this class. Several mini projects, Gurley really cares about his students and puts in effort in helping them. He's very accessible and kind.

An A is definitely achievable with hard work in this class. He does give out extra credit and is very clear on what he tests for on all of his exams. Make sure to watch his lectures (you don't have to go to class since he records his lectures) since he gives out possible test questions during lectures. He's very responsive to emails.

Awesome teacher. I took PCB4522 with Orgo 2 and Physics 1 in an 18 credit schedule. While it did work out, I had to sacrifice a social life due to the rigor of the course. It's a manageable class but it is tough. Try to do as well as you can for the first 3 exams so the 4th can be easier. You get a retake and extra credit. 1st exam is all homework.

Dr. Gurley is the best professor I've had, but this is not an easy A class. You have to work for it. There is a lot of information to take in, but he tells you exactly what to expect from the exams. Although I didn't get an A, it is possible as long as you study not last min. And he allows you to retake your lowest exam and gives extra credit.

Getting an A in this class is extremely achievable if you put in enough effort for this course since Gurley gives A LOT of extra credit. To succeed in the course make sure to listen to his recorded lectures and do the practice quizzes since he often gives exam questions in his lectures and quizzes.

Dr. Gurley genuinely cares about his students and even extended our summer C course so students have more time to complete it. The material however, is very in depth and requires A LOT of time to go over and memorize. Exams are straight from lectures. Make sure you set aside a good chunk of the week studying for this class.

Dr. Gurley is one of my favorite professors ever! He truly tells the story of microbiology, he doesn't just read bullets from slides. His tests and grading are very fair. It is easy to get an A if you do the work. Read the book before class, focus on the lectures then use the audio files to take notes. I learned so much and enjoyed this class

I took Professor Gurley's class as my last class of college. I wish I had met this man a few years before. He may have sparked my appreciation for learning little more. He is a good person and a good teacher. There is no question that this class is hard. It is INCREDIBLY difficult. He will help you get there. He will tell you the story of genetics.

Gurley is an amazing person, he makes lectures enjoyable with his humor. However, he sometimes gets lost in his lectures and is unclear but gives really good study guides for the exams. He also lets you retake your lowest exam. My advice is to START EARLY, DO NOT leave the lectures or material for a couple days in advance you wont remember anything

1 of the hardest classes, after Orgo, but he's an amazing person, there to help if you reach out. Attend in person + reviews, came in not knowing anything, just following along and filling in notes (don't take too many notes or you'll be overwhelmed) and pay attention to what he's saying and you'll understand enough to review, leave 1 wk study time

He is an amazing professor very nice and understanding! I took biochem beforehand which made the class easier to follow along so, I would HIGHLY recommend taking biochem before. The exams are very doable and not bad at all! He gave 5% worth of extra credit and you're allowed to retake your lowest exam. Not very time consuming- studied in a week.

Dr. Gurley is funny and he is willing to help. Tests are hard but fair. He tells you what you need to know and does not try to trick you. His class layout, however, is a little confusing and could be more organized. Overall good professor

There's tons of material so be prepared to put in some time. That said, his recorded lectures are clear and easy to follow. His exams are fair and based solely on lecture, so you don't need the textbook. He's also very sympathetic about deadlines and will absolutely work to accommodate any students issues. I took the class my 1st year and did fine!

cannot say enough good things about this man. hands down the most caring professor at UF. memorize the answers to the homework quizzes for exam 1 - 90% of exam 1 is the HW quiz questions verbatim. TAKE THIS CLASS

I had Dr. Gurley during the COVID-19 pandemic and he was extremely considerate of his students and their well-being. He extended deadlines and included extra create assignments to help students out. Besides that the course is lecture heavy and the test are straightforward and from the lecture. He has a good sense of humor!

Dr. Gurley is truly the best. Molecular Genetics was a blast watching his lectures online. I wish I could take every class with him, he truly cares about his students and the material. He offers extra credit and his assignments are straight forward and not difficult if you review the material and instructions. He was easily reachable by email too.

Dr. Gurley is the best professor I've ever had! PCB4522 is a VERY HARD class, but he helps you understand and absorb the material. This class is NOT an easy A, you will have to work for it. BUT, Dr. Gurley gives you EVERYTHING that you need to get that A! LOTS of extra credit work! (USE THEM!!!) I look forward to taking another class with him!

Gurley is super passionate about molecular genetics, which actually kinda helped motivate me to do good in the class. He equips you with all you need for the exams, but with all online classes, whether you will get an A for the class or not depends on your willingness to stay on top of things, even through the daunting 1.5 hour long lectures.

Dr. Gurley is the most amazing teacher I've ever had. If I could, I'd take his class over & over in a loop. You'll learn no matter how hard this thing is bc he makes you learn, he helps you visualize, he draws the image in your head, the man is a genius & the best asset UF has. This class has a lot of content and may seem overwhelming at first but Dr. Gurley is very clear about what you will be tested on. He explicitly tells you what will be and what won't be on the exams. It does take a bit of time to study the material but he gives a lot of extra credit and he is very approachable. Loved this class.

Dr. Gurley is one of the kindest professors I have ever had. He requires an external camera for the proctoring of his tests. I once forgot to pack my USB camera when leaving to take care of my mother after a surgery; Dr. Gurley mailed me a camera to use temporarily. This shows that he is a professor that really cares about his students.

Dr. Gurley is an excellent professor. He's very passionate about the content and he provides a lot of supplemental videos for each topic to help you better understand the lectures. He is very lenient on due dates because he cares about all of his students' success. If you stay on top of the lectures and extra credit, you'll get an A.

Loved him as a professor! He is very knowledgeable, kind, & definitely does want you to do well. His lectures seem daunting but they're genuinely interesting & were only necessary for me to review some of the slides I didn't understand. I did all the EC & invested a couple days before exams to really memorize everything and I ended with a 97.

Dr. Gurley is a once in a lifetime professor and through his class I obtained a true appreciation for science. To do well in his class, do not get behind on material and know his ppt slides. The material is hard to digest, but I am giving him only a 3 difficulty because of the tons of extra credit he offers and the retake final opportunity.

Dr. Gurley is an amazing professor: despite the material being pretty complicated and nit picky, he does an amazing job teaching his students. He actively wants you to succeed. He constantly hints at exam questions in his lectures and hw and despite being exam heavy grading, he let's you retake that exam and offers extra credit. Amazing class

Mol. bio gene. Extremely difficult and dense material, the most difficult info i've ever experienced, but he explains things very clearly. Assignments and exam are easy so that's all that matters. great and caring guy.

I LOVE HIM! LIKE SERIOUSLY WOW!!! i mean thats my opinion. there is so much content and so much work but i seriously think he is great at what he does. he cares for his students and makes sure they get the help they want. and on a good note, he is funny.

Amazing professor, is actually interested in teaching the topic. But this class if not easy, it's a little disorganized and I had some troubles following along with lectures/powerpoints. I found myself missing topics in quizzes/exams even after watching lectures many times. Not too difficult of a class but not my first pick either.

Dr. Gurley is great! He is super intelligent and is truly a pioneer in certain fields of genetics. His lectures can be a little slow sometimes, but he is very transparent about exams, quizzes, etc. His class is definitely not easy, but it is very doable. It's a matter of putting in the hours and preparing for exams ahead of time.

I love Professor Gurley, his lectures are great and he makes sure you know the concepts you'll need on the exams. The exams themselves are very fair and as long as you pay close attention to what he covers in details in lectures you can succeed! Unlike many other lecturers he is engaging and funny and really cares about the science he is teaching.

This has been the most difficult class I have taken at UF. When you watch lectures, Gurley makes the material make sense, but there is so much minute detail and so many slides it is impossible to memorize all the material on what is tested. He gives lots of extra credit and other assignments lighten the test grades. Good luck if you take PCB 4522!

Dr. Gurley is very funny and makes lectures engaging, however it sometimes gets in the way of learning the actual material. I did enjoy his class but the canvas page was messy and hard to follow. He explained the material well and if you followed the lectures closely, you will do well on the exams.

Dr. Gurley really cares about his students. He invests so much time in annotating homework response vs. just leaving them as correct/incorrect without explaining why. He provided study guides, flashcard decks, and supplementary materials and even dedicated 2-3 hours per night for 3 nights leading up to exams to do reviews. One of my best ever.

Probably the best professor I will ever have at UF. He cares so much about his students, and even though his class is tough, he gives you all the tools you need to succeed. Always understands students' situations, gives extensions if you need, and will meet with you whenever to answer all your questions about the course content. I'll miss him!

Dr. Gurley is truly one of the most caring professors out there; he will absolutely support you and give you any help you need throughout the course. It was an honor to get to learn from him. It is, however, a very hard course, so take the recommended pre-reqs, don't get behind on the material, and take Gurley's advice seriously.

Great Professor, Cares about the students. Exams are similar to HW and if you stay on top of HW and lectures you'll do well. Course covers a lot of material so if you wait last minute to study than you probably won't do as well as if you started reviewing earlier. Highly recommend this Professor!

He is a wonderful lecturer, you can tell he cares about students having a positive learning experience by ensuring that students understand course material or providing extensions during extenuating circumstances. The material can be dense so it's best to stay current throughout the course. Overall, by following his advice, you'll do great!

He's a good professor but he keeps adding material without lengthening the course. Don't expect punnet squares, you will be memorizing dozens of similar 3 letter proteins. A lot of work but it is very possible to get an A, just study. *First exam is significantly easier than the rest, the extra credit will boost your grade by 5% and its easy.

Dr. Gurley was a very inspiring and precious. I enjoyed his lectures, BUT BE PREPARED. This is a lecture and test-heavy class, one that could have been split into two different courses. This is a very difficult class and requires a lot of work going into it. Do not take it with a heavy course load.
