very stupid guy, even dont know very basic organic stuff. I dont know how he become the professor
its basic organic chemistry, his lectures are too advanced for a basic level class. MUST read the text book and practive on your own, he does give practice exams so study those! Try to avoid this professor if possible.
A lot of people complain about the professor, but how is it some people get A's? There is a lot of material to cover and so you MUST do a lot of work on your own if you want to understand. His tests were based exactly on practice problems given in class and on practice tests. He is passionate about what he does and sometimes too detailed.
don't waste your time if you can avoid this guy! very boring and way too advanced for an intro class. exams are all fill in and unfair.

Not helpful at all. He breezes through mechanisms with no clarity. Sure he knows the material but being a prof means you should be able to teach it too. The class avr. for the 1st exam was a 33...that should speak for itself.
Hersh is not bad. Orgo is difficult, but not impossible. Really understand your acids/bases, Resonance, and also WHY/HOW reactions occur. Study from text and outside resources. TONS of reactions, but exams are definitely doable. Get the ACS guide early, and understand it well. Also, read before class. Study hard, aim high, and good luck to all.
This is definitely a hard class and you need to put in a lot of effort. He explains the material fairly well and he gives you practice exam before every midterm which really helps.
study hard.
you will learn a lot from his class if you study hard and you will earn a good method to study organic
he is by far the worst professor I have ever gotten, during lecture he literally mumbles to himself even after everyone said that we can barely hear nor understand what he says. he doesn't have notes or slides to teach from, he basically just drew the structures day 1 of class and expected us to "understand" it. THE WORST, AVOID HIM!
Horrible, speaks very softly even with his microphone headset. If you ask him a question, he makes you feel stupid. Gives review sheets that don't match the exam.
Do not take him! Although he says above 80 is an A. But only 1 ppl get an A in a class of 100. Class average were 55/100, 50/100, 35/100. He also doesn't prepare us for the ACS. He checked the ACS exam before our final, and replace the ones he didn't cover with his own questions. His questions are very hard and time-consuming.
His class requires a lot of work and dedication. Must put a lot of time into the class. He is very clear in explaining all concepts. Very humble and helpful. Work hard.
Really learnt ALOT! Difficult class but he is fair. His lectures were very similar to his tests. If you know everything in lecture COLD you will do fine in his class. He really cared for his students to succeed and always looked forward to help students during office hours. I have no regrets taking Dr. Hersh and would gladly take him again.
he doesnt motivate his students nor care about them. worst decision i made was to take him this semester.
he expects way to much for first semester orgo students. thinks hes a know-it-all and it really upset me by the way he always said that the students were not smart enough for his material. his lecture notes are barely guidelines for the test he gives. i dont understand why queens college has such poor professors. they dont even motivate us.
He doesn't care about students at all
Do me a favor. Dont take him. He's no good. Exams are hard, lectures are no good, and the he blames students. Well yeah about you learn how to teach?
It's one of those classes where you have to pretty much work your ass off to pass and do well but that is Organic Chemistry in a nut shell. It's not easy but start with the right mindset (not looking for an easy professor) and sitting down, reading the book, using online resources and practice. He does curve for those who are border-line failing.
Make sure you read the textbook before class otherwise nothing will make sense. Very doable without a tutor. His tests are hard and you dont have a lot of time to do it so you will only do well if you know the material cold. Nice guy!
Organic Chemistry is not a joke. Hersh does make it harder then it is. You really need to spend alot of time studying for his exams. However, he does care for his students and curve border line students.
The guy is very boring. He doesn't care about the students. Harsh grader, takes off point for nothing compared to other professors. Book he uses is useless, use another book. No curves. Take at your own risk.
Professor Hersh is a great a great teacher. People need to understand that this class is not easy and no matter what professor they take, it will still be very difficult. Go to lectures, take good notes and read the book if you have to. Also, make sure to do lots of practice.
The fairest Orgo professor/grader in Queens College. If youre planning to take orgo in QC, dont take it with anyone else other than Hersh. Or I promise you, that you will regret it! Enjoyed my experience in his course, and I took it twice. My opinion about him totally changed the second time around!
Three exams and the ACS. If you don't show up to class, you won't do well. The questions on the exams are very similar to recitation problems so go to class! Very straightforward and open to questions after class. Highly recommended.
Dr. Hersh provides interesting lectures that go very quickly. There is a lot of information in the lectures that will help you on the exams. He is also available to answer questions. Overall it was a good experience.
Hersh was tough. it was definitely an extremely difficult course that required hours and hours of studying. He definitely DOES curve so just make sure you are doing better than average and you will be okay. attending lectures is also beneficial
Ive never considered any of the Premed courses hard. However, taking this class was the worst thing Ive ever done in life. Ive always done well in the other reqs, even Orgo 1 but it would be a miracle from heaven if I even PASS this class. Do whatever you want with this information.
The class was tough, but put in the work and it's doable. Hersh is a tough but fair grader, as well as a good teacher--that is, if you put in the work.
1. Lecture notes 2. Assigned textbook problems 3. Clutch prep Use anything else (ex. hours reading the textbook) and you will fail
Great chemist, terrible teacher. Going to class is necessary bc he will mention things that will appear or not on the exam. Recitation and 10000x practice problems each chapter helps a bit. Hrs of reading & HW practice may not. He made an announcement basically saying HW may or may not help, do at your own risk ........ left me speechless.
If you don't have a strong foundation in orgo, you will suffer. He also hates repeating things, so read the syllabus because there is a ton of information on there.
I really struggled to adjust in this class but Im happy I passed. If youre taking organic chemistry at QC, take it with him for sure; he doesnt curve tests but he curves the final grade. Go to class and do textbook problems. You have to devote a lot of time to this class if you want a good grade.
Prof. Hersh wasnt bad. He did give sample tests & hw, but his way of teaching was a bit hard to understand. Orgo is hard so u have to be devoting a lot of ur time on it even if ur taking other classes. Dont depend only on class notes, def utilize other sources like the textbook, YT, hw, etc. Take him if youre willing to put in a lotttt if work!
Worst Professor ever!!! Avoid him at all costs. Does not care about his students. Want to fail you! Doesn't care if you understand the notes. The class averages are always around 30-55. If you can take someone else I suggest you to go with anyone but him. His voice is so monotoned, it will make you hateeeeee sitting in his class.
Who said Orgo is supposed to be easy? Orgo is REALLY hard but Dr Hersh tries to make is as doable as possible. Read the textbook and listen to lecture. Recitation is GOLDEN!!!!!!! Do all the Online HW ON TIME!!
Hes a very tough prof, so ready to work. I dont agree with his teaching styles because even with constant study I was still really worried about failing. The good thing is he has some mercy with final grades, try your best honestly and use YT and other guides as much as you can. His exams do not have high avgs they are between 40-57.
He knows the material and is able to explain it well. Test are a difficult, but that can be said for any organic chemistry class. MAKE SURE YOU PAY ATTENTION DURING RECITATION(every detail) AND GO OVER THE RECOMMENDED TEXT BOOK QUESTIONS as a lot of that material will appear on his tests. He is abrasive in his emails when help is asked for.
Organic is hard, and Hersh tries. His exams are hard so use YT and recitation as much as you can. Emails as explained can come off as harsh but that is usually not his intent. He does look for effort and your final grade will reflect it, so build a professor-student relationship.
Difficult exams and it did not make it better to have it online. He is a nice professor and person overall. Orgo is TOUGH, it was nice to have someone willing to help. However, sometimes he would come off as harsh, doesnt intend to! Prepare to WORK and study! Orgo will be your new part time job! Its a lot of work! Work hard, study hard!
Amazing professor with amazing lectures! If you pay attention in his class, do all the assigned problems in the book, and complement it with some textbook readings, you will get an A! The best chem professor at QC
Orgo is a tough class in general but his exams are beyond hard. Exams count for almost your entire grade. He is willing to answer questions but sometimes comes off harsh. I would recommend taking this class with a different professor
The exams are very hard which he's aware of. He even mentions how low the test average is. Going to class isn't much help you need to study outside of class and find other ways to learn the material. The exams are not at all similar to class examples which makes it hard to anticipate what the exam will be like. AVOID
Orgo is hard and Orgo online is worse! Drawing molecules on Zoom are impossible and Hersh ain't Picasso. Maybe the class is easier in-person, but we were lost the whole time. Class averages were 40's-50's, so we barely passed. Hersh's soft voice and do it yourself attitude didn't help. My advice: take Orgo elsewhere & transfer the credits to QC.
Class was hard. Loads of students had extra resources to help during exams and some passed wellllll behind average. They will say Orgo I is a weeding class if you ask them though for study help, and thats why Orgo II grades are distributed. Be careful.
Hersh is a good professor but exams are really hard. You have to work hard and even if you fail in the first try for this class use his lectures and advice for the class again.
I think that while Prof Hersh is very educated in Orgo, he wasn't the best a teaching it. His lectures were always very messy. I ended up teaching myself using the textbook bc I found his lectures to be confusing. I wish he gave us more practice problems.
Organic chemistry is not easy, and it's not for everybody. Hersh is the most caring professor ever, I met one on one with him multiple occasion go over my exams, ask him questions. if you pass his class with a B, you are extremely good. He loves his students and wants them to good, but you gotta put the work and some extra and more
Academic dishonesty on the part of a lot of students, Hersh may or may have not been aware. Good professor and knowledgeable, not good at explaining. Organic is organic work hard dont cheat.
If you take this class be prepared to teach yourself. The exam average is low. I wouldnt recommend taking Hershs class. Unfortunately QC gives no other option
Too much cheating this semester, people worked their ways to get a passing grade. Not everyone did that but a decent amount did. Sad to see those who worked hard killing it and then people who cheated getting away with it. Used eid as an advantage to get test questions, had people help with exams, much more...
Guy is an awesome professor, but the premed majors of this class really did a number. The amount of dishonesty academically, and people being paid to do exams was insane. Hersh is tough, and maybe it won't work out at times. But the premeds and people trying to only maintain a good gpa cheated others. Very sad, should be investigated..
Hes a great guy, super nice. BUT HIS CLASS, is DIFFICULT to say the least. You have to WORK, its orgo so its expected, but he wants you to really, really think about these concepts; really only for our benefit. Overall, hes a nice person. If you study, put in work, and try to ask him questions, you will be fine. online makes it harder
Professor Hersh is very difficult. I did well in the class but it was not easy at all. Definitely understand that organic chemistry is a hard class and online classes made it even harder. That being said make sure you take your time. Rushing through exams isn't helpful since you cant go back to questions. He's hard but u can get an A or A-
Word of advice, if youre an honors kid, going on the pre-med/graduate tract, or looking to learn dont cheat. Seriously dont pay people to do your exams and collaborate via WhatsApp. You ruin the whole learning process, just try your best. Despicable how some students were desperate for a good grade, best of luck when school starts normally again
I ended up doing well but I dedicated many hours a week studying. I reread the textbook multiple times and went over the practice problems in class. He teaches the topics well but his tests are VERY hard and makes you know the material VERY well. There are 4 m.c. exams with lots of choices for each question so make sure you know what it well.
Hersh tries but it was a brutal class. Study by yourself and do not even think of asking classmates for much help as many of them have their own cliques for exam collaborations. Your best best is using all the practice questions and office hours. Its brutal online and it will tell a price on those who did well unjustly.
My respect was lost when he didnt address the cheaters, people paid for the final to be done for them. The whole class averages got messed up because of the cheating mostly done by the pre medical students. Brutal class and he is a challenge, try your best but online dont expect any fair grading. He was one of the best but he became like the rest
I've never felt like a professor *wants* the students to fail or takes pride in the low pass rate before- until this class. He's a nice enough guy but those exams are brutal and his lectures are like counting sheep. It felt disorganized. Do yourself a favor and get an e-permit.
The latest test was without a doubt the most difficult exam I have ever taken. It was an inordinate amount of questions within a short amount of time. I had to drop abd he said that all the students who got less than a 30 (which is a lot) pretty much have no chance at passing so gonna have to try again
This class was a bomb even when studying nonstop. The exams were so tough that class averages were barely a 30 for each exam but to make the class average higher, he would exclude the exam grades below a 30. Orgo is tough as it is but making exams harder than what it is already to weed students isn't right esp when we all trying hard.
I dont understand why make exams so much harder when the class and material is already hard. His Exams are so brutal. Average for each exam was very low so he exclude people who got below 30 to make it avg go little higher. Its not that we are not trying obviously trying our best this is very hard course but I regret taking this course with him.
If the average of the exams are in the 30s, then it is most likely not the students fault and is probably the professors. just saying
It just felt like he wanted you to fail. Even if you felt you understood the material/homework, the exams were insane. Way more than just 4 or 5 options to choose from per question, many choices to catch you out, the class average was in the 30s every time. No curve. No extra credit. He's a nice enough guy, but avoid this class. Take an epermit.
You have to know what you are going to get out of his classes, because told by professor to come prepared in the classroom with the pre reading assignments completed and one should practice the problems after the lectures. So just follow his footsteps to get better in the organic chemistry.
I had taken Dr.Hersh for Organic chemistry 1 and 2. COME TO CLASS PREPARED. DO PRECLASS HW, DO POST CLASS HW!!!!!!!!!!!!. Make mistakes on hw not on exams. He is fair but exams are hard. DO NOT think you can study last minute for exams. Also exams are CUMULATIVE as you need to know past reactions even if he says they are not. GOOD LUCK
Hersh is either a hit or miss, but I suggest taking Chen over him if you need more time for material absorption and a class where there is more chances to do well. His two midterms and finals were a poor idea, should have stayed as three mids + a final. The real students who should be punished are the students who had him online in 2020-2021.
I think Prof Hersh doesn't know his audience. He is only really teaching undergrads with one year of Chem under their belt, not PhDs. He covers up to two topics in one week and really does not take kindly to questions. He assigns unnecessary homework; he has no awareness that the students he teaches have other priorities too.
Hersh is an expert in orgo, unlike his students, who he expects to know orgo from the womb. His tests r extremely hard & don't reflect how hard u studied. Grades r horrendous. He doesn't count grades under 30. Even if u know majority of the info & concepts, passing isnt guaranteed. HIGHLY recommend epermitting bc other ORGO profs r just as bad@qc.
Lots of varying opinions but if u study hard and retake the course 3 times, i can assure you will get an A...anyways two exams 30% each with cheat sheet so do your best on those or hersh will convince you to change career plans since you cant figure out the relationship of a fischer and sawhorse projection.
Don't recommend at all. RUN AWAY!!!! Hersh makes the class a lot harder than it has to be, basically makes u hit the ground running. Orgo is definitely hard and requires work but due to Hersh it's practically impossible. Kids have taken this 3-4 times at QC and failed consistently. Definitely epermit this class, don't stress yourself or hurt ur GPA
The ratings really say it all. He is so rude when you ask a question and will make you feel like a failure for even asking. His exams are either a hit or miss; the second exam was a complete curveball. If you aren't mentally prepared to get destroyed by his exams, do yourself a favor and epermit the class elsewhere.
Nobody takes Organic Chemistry because they want to, they take it because they need to. Yes, the class lives up to its scary reputation. Do not take other difficult/time consuming courses while you take this. This is your life. This course is your entire being for one year. There is nothing else. It's not even a little bit enjoyable.
Not a bad professor, but the class is tough and if you are taking other science classes you need to find a way to study. Had him for chem 251 last semester for Fall 2022 and I have to recommend taking with another professor or going to another school for this class. It is hard all around but the class is hard here.
Smart man, a very dedicated chemist also, but as a Orgo professor like most out there I would pass. Take at your own risk, many relied off fancy tutoring services with his old exams (he should consider changing exam formats/question types) because this was how many got through. I would suggest taking elsewhere because of these things.
Recommend to take this at another school. Orgo is orgo, but this class with hersh is haywire. The final has nomenclature, knowing the bp/mp of certain solvents, and mostly synthesis. The class is not a reflection of orgo's true beauty, sad but most who pass (like me) still have no orgo knowledge but can take biochem.
This class is unlike any class I've taken before. Come to class prepared because there are no slides-you learn the material as the course goes on during lecture. Hence, you have to read the textbook beforehand to understand the material. Is it possible to get an A? Yes, it's possible without tutoring, but get ready to make sacrifices for it.
Tenured, so doesn't care if you pass or fail. As many said tutoring from Nomi will guarantee a pass once you do what is needed. But many do not have that type of money so you must sacrifice. Take it with another professor or at another place!
Hersh is out of touch with the students and times. Should have a TA in class helping, or flatly be in charge of orgo classes only as his class becomes a "cheat my way through this". I would recommend just making your schedule capable enough for you to have time to study and breathe. If you can research e-permits.
The entire chemistry department is a sick place with professors who can't keep up, whether you're looking for help from this professor or the people who should be "helping", just skip it. This class is challenging, yeah, but it offers no real exposure for careers as most invest in a tutor who had this man. The dept ignores this though.
Like everyone said just skip if you can. His syllabus states that he is running experiments with office hours modality and when he teaches you see it too. He skipped a few ch for spring 23 that just makes the qc chem classes look below quality. Never does a thing to make his class fairer as some have more to use than others. The worst.
Having a phd does not always means a person can teach. Hope he considers the unfair ways people have gotten by in his course and changes this soon.
Absolutely unfair. Aware of the cheating ongoing and DOES NOTHING, unfair to students who have to work hard.
So far so good! :) His lectures are very clear and he's always very helpful during office hour to clarify certain topics in the text. I don't think it's a class you can get by in by just listening to lectures. You should really put time into reading the text and doing a lot of practice problems and applications. This subject is not easy at all!!
He needs to be more in tune with the student body, the truth is class operations changed ever since covid-19. He can either be a bless or a miss, pay for the woman with answer banks and you are guaranteed a pass or you work hard. Very terrible, lack of effort to make all fair has shown...
Super hard. Honestly go for any other professor. You can't hear him b/c its a big lecture hall and he mumbles. People pass by paid tutoring who have past exams. You need to sacrifice all your time to ochem if you want to pass his class without tutoring, read and do all the textbook problems. Goodluck, so glad this semesters almost over
Tutoring is the key to success in this class. Treat studying for this class like a full-time job. Barely any partial credit, exam questions are difficult, students rely on old exams to pass. Averages get worse and worse after each exam. If you take this class, good luck lol.
Is there a reason he hasn't changed exams up year by year yet? Letting students get away with murder who go to Nomi or Orgo-man because they have past exams. The class is not "up to standard" if he lets these students get an easy pass while others struggle, and certain cliques take that tutoring service, and interpret as you wish. Take elsewhere!
He's very good. The truth is you don't need any tutor to do well in the class. Take his lectures, recitations, and textbook seriously and you'll be more than passing. Half the class doesn't even come to lecture and then complain that he's no good. Going to grad school requires some fundamental study techniques and discipline. Underrated professor.
Tutoring is not going to guarantee you a pass. Coming from someone who took Nomi, It was still required for me to put minimum 20+ hours a week into studying, while attending all lectures and recitation. To succeed in this class, use reactions that are posted on blackboard and DO HIS SAMPLE EXAM QUESTIONS!!(As some of them are similar on exams).
In order to succeed in this class, listen up, 1) make sure to do the homework before class and come prepared. 2) Ask him questions during his lecture 3) Pay attention to blackboard reactions that are posted because those are majority of the exam. HINT: Look out for No reactions on his exams(At least 1 on every exam).
Took this teacher 3 times; got C in parts 1 & 2, then A in a retake I agree with negative comments. Key to passing: read textbook in depth, do every single end of question, understanding homework without Chegg indicates your understanding. No slides. lucky & got old exams from a friend, and used Blackboard formula sheet as a cheat sheet for exams!
The influx of good reviews is strange, almost like a cover-up. Whatever it is, he's a nice enough man, but he should change exams up strongly for the sake of fairness. This class at other senior colleges that are reputable have these in place, so if do want to pass either sacrifice tons of time or use Nomi. Sorry, the negative reviews are true.
William Hersh is a great and honorable professor. This class is not very hard to do well in as long as you put in the right effort and stop worrying about others (and the fact that they have a tutor). There are so many resources available to you (text, office hour, lecture), you don't need to waste thousands of $$$ for a tutor to get a good grade.
People have posted about this tutor issue because it's unfair, the department has been aware, but minimal work has been done to address the issue. Posting just because people stated the obvious only makes this professor's reviews look even more manipulated. Do yourself a favor and take with a professor who can help your learning. The truth stands.
Both organic chem 1 and 2 are difficult. His class and tests are designed to trick you, it seems like he aims for low grades with his students, and blames students for lack of studying/reading for their bad grades. Tests are short response but hardly gives partial credit, seems like he wants to take off points to just take them off. Terrible.
Orgo is lowkey a joke I don't understand the hype
It turns out that I'm in the minority, but Dr. Hersh is amazing. He's great at explaining concepts, he's always very helpful, and his tests are fair. The subject is relatively easy (except for the garden-variety carbonyl compounds which were loaded with reactions). Go to lectures and pay good attention. You. Don't. Need. A. "Tutor". To. Do. Well.
That's great for the "minority" they did well, doesn't speak for the majority though! Very out of touch with teaching, great chemist, poor professor. The tutoring helped many, old exams were at fingertips. Nothing was done to address the issues of "unfairness" either. Take if you have the time, lecture alone isn't key as the reviewer worships.
Sorry to the fellow readers who see the weird beefing. Hersh is decent, but as a professor that differs. The more past material you have the better, any former student will tell you he gives samples from the year prior, but some have more for reasons. Not fair, would be best to truly revamp exams. Advice? Use Orgo as a second language and practice.
Sample questions are not enough, even Hersh says this on his syllabus that you have to truly integrate with the material. Relying off that only is bad news. Personally, recitation was the best, but I heavily relied on other texts and had to budget my schedule of classes to do well. Would recommend taking it with someone else for a different style.
Awesome, takes his job seriously, gives plenty of practice/material, and has a heart for teaching. Wish we had a separate time of the week alloted to recitations (not to take away time from lectures), but that's about it.
Underrated af
Great character but I guess we have to rate him as a professor. Not the greatest there could be other tools in place like everyone mentioned to better help students. I would probably redo the experience with a different professor since I think my organic chemistry mechanics are on the lower side. Tough class and we can work on fairer methods.
Hersh is a good chemist, but not a good professor. People get scrutinized for saying their opinions about it, you see the majority of reviews and you make your call. Talk to your average students who come to class, practice, and use that and see if you feel like taking this class with this professor is manageable.
He is one of the toughest graders out there, Organic Chem Tutor and the textbook are your best friend for this class because his explanations lack depth and he comes off as condescending bashing students for their lack of understanding when he himself is at fault for his less than exemplary teaching style. Just make sure to really LOCK IN!
I gave this man the benefit of the doubt and while everyone including other staff members advised me to avoid taking this course with this professor I didn't listen I believed it was a bunch of students who don't try to understand. This professor may be a great chemist but when it comes to teaching and working with students he disappointed me !!!
If you are not even slightly good at chemistry, I highly advise taking orgo with another prof. He does provide practice questions and exams however you must understand the notes which are very different from the textbook he tells us to read. The HW is not bad at all, you just need to put in the time. Overall, would not take this prof again
The truth is He is a terrible professor. His teaching style doesn't work. When students asked for help and review sheets... "not my job". His explanations are rushed, doesn't genuinely care if students are struggling and overall the worst professor I've had in my life. If his class average is a 20 it speaks VOLUME.
Overcoming the teacher was the hardest part of the class. Extremely stingy grading. Passive aggressive. Extremely hard to understand during lecture. Like really hard to understand. Be ready to pay for a Tudor consistently.
Please retire. There's professors who can help the younger generation, and this man isn't one of them.
Crazy but expected nothing was done to fix the unfairness going on- is it believable same outliers are randomly scoring high 90s every time when the averages reach low as 40? Only way to get thru the weedout and get that A is to spend some on tutoring so if that's the goal be ready for it
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ
If there's one thing he's skilled at besides organic chemistry, it's knowing how to ruin your GPA (: To my fellow premeds: save the one epermit you get for chem courses for this specific class. You'll be thanking yourself later.
Ppl taking this same orgo class at Cornell have much easier exams btw. This man has degrees from Yale and Columbia and chooses to torment students at a CUNY. Bro's just doing it for the love of the game honestly, I do not respect it tho
