Helpful criticism,great teaching style.Extremely fair grading,and even funny.I'm even keeping my textbook because it is so helpful.The class was not hard to me.I have had experience in composing essays,but I don't consider that to be a factor.This class is a core requirement I'm even taking ENG1302 from him.Essays only have to bee 500-800 words btw

Great online teacher. Keeps it simple, doesn't overwhelm you with a bunch of tedious work. Lecture notes were really helpful and he grades extremely fair. Haven't received my grade yet, but I'm very satisfied with the course.

The assignments are pretty easy and if you have any questions he is really helpful. He grades perfectly fair which is awesome! Also, some paper instructions are really detailed but don't be intimidated, all the work is pretty easy to do. I would definitely recommend this class to a friend.

Assignments were not overwhelming and his interest is on your comprehension, not your grade. He encourages you to do your best without criticism. He is an enjoyable professor and grades assignments very fairly. Would definitely recommend to others.

This was an online class so interaction was minimal. Keep in mind that all papers are required to go into the tutoring center. This means deadlines are earlier than they appear.

Really helpful professor. He is fair, balanced and helpful. Easy to work with. The course is very writing intensive and all assignments need to be tutored. However, he is always available to help and is very pleasant and fair to work with. Its a hard course with a great professor

I thought that I would have some difficulty communicating with him, but he is very understanding and responds immediately to your emails. His work load is nowhere near stressful. Remember to submit your papers in for tutoring. We're in the middle of the semester and I can attest that he is a great professor.

I took this class online and found that Mr. Harkey was very good at providing you crystal clear instructions and feedback. He is on top of grades and most of the time, you receive your grade in less than a day. If you have a question or concern, he is quick to respond and provide assistance.

Professor Harkey is somewhat demanding but not unreasonable and gives clear instructions about what he wants in assignments so I know what I need to do to get a good grade. I would probably take another class from him.

I've taken Harkey for 1301, 1302, and now 3430 in spring 2013. I wouldn't have gone back if he wasn't an amazing professor. He has an interest in making it an easy course, is helpful, and grades very fairly. Harkey has been my favorite professor, simply because he is that nice. You'll get an A if you just do the assignments, no stress involved.

Took his class online during the summer. Very face paced which is expected with summer classes. Do your work, and get tutoring if needed. 6 writing assignments plus final exam. I hate writing, but he made writing easy. Recommend taking him.

After the original professor of my class dropped a few weeks til finals, he took over. He eased all the confusion and unsteadiness throughout the class. after all, our professor just dumped us. so I want to say thanks to him I felt more at ease and accomplished :)

He was a wonderful professor. I would recommend anyone to have him as a teacher. I hated english before his class but he changed my whole view  on it. His material is very easy to understand and his intructions to all the assignments he gave were very clear. He gave great feedback and answerd any question in a timely manner.

Class and professor were ok. Basic material like how to write a memo, email, etc. Had to write a research paper. Requires you to submit all assignments to online tutoring center for review. It is helpful but it requires having your assignments ready 2 - 3 days before you submit to him. Overall, class is fine, would recommend.

Professor is rude when replying to your messages. Though he normally responds on time, when the final comes around he is nowhere to be found. Nobody even knew whether their final was submitted properly to blackboard because he gave no feedback until he posted the final overall course grades. I got an A on my research paper ended up with a B4class.

He is a good teacher who gives good lectures that aren't boring at all. He helps you a lot when you don't know something and is easy. As long as you do your work, you will pass with flying colors!

I took this class because I had seen all the good reviews but this class was very difficult and I felt very overwhelmed because everything i would turn in never seemed to be good enough. I passed with a C, but I would have not take his class again if I had the option.

Be prepared to write lots of papers! Despite all the papers, I actually enjoyed this class because the assignments challenge you to think critically. The professor is fair teacher. I like that he would instantly grade assignments along with feedback. I think he's very organized. His lecture notes are very helpful.

Loved having Harkey, do what he asks and you will pass. Reading is a must, I took maybe a hour a day at the very most to complete all his work (homework-papers). Super easy to talk to and so easy to pay attention to, why would you want to take your eyes of?

Class is structured and instructions are crystal clear. You have to submit your papers to the reading center and this is extremely helpful. Participate and try and the rest is history. Replies to emails and work extremely fast and gives very helpful feedback.

For the most part, Harkey is fair, intelligent and consistent. Do what you know is expected and you will be fine. He is one of the best instructors I have experienced at UHV.

Professor Harkey was AMAZING! Though this is a required course for my BA degree, I found it to be an extremely helpful course, in that it helped me brush up on my professional writing skills. Prof. Harkey always responded fast, offered feedback, and just seems like a really nice guy. I hope to find him teaching other UD courses.

Harkey is a great professor. If you show up and do the homework and use the tutoring center you will pass with flying colors. A must take if you are needing English 1301 plus he is very funny and makes class entertaining.

Great semester! Flex II so it was complete in only 8 weeks. Instructor was available with great communication & feedback - clearly eager to see students succeed. Helpful reminders of due dates - clear & concise expectations from beginning to end. Despite being online, it never seemed we were on our own (unlike some others) Best class out of 6!

Once I saw that Harkey was available for an elective class, I signed up for it immediately! This course was self paced and I was able to finish a month earlier than expected. Tests were a little tricky. He is very quick to respond and seems to love what he teaches!

He is a great professor, however, there are only four papers due throughout the semester (two critical response and two others) on the six inexpensive novels needed for the course. The papers are five page long assignments but double spaced makes it 2.5 tops. He is very fair in grading. Awesome guy. Just make sure you read and write papers well.

He is great! His assignments are super easy but require a lot of reading. He is clear about his expectations and gives good feed back on critical response papers and exams. As long as you do your work following his guidelines you will receive an A. He also posts extra insightful info for all assignments. Highly recommend him!!

LOVE HIM! He is great and his assignments were interesting. I took his class online because I live in Houston but if I could redo it, I would drive just to take his class in person. The reading material can mainly be accessed free online which was awesome and the assignments were more critical thinking than anything. Loved the class!

This class is very interesting. I thought I was going to suffer really hard with the essays but it was not bad. Look up the readings on Shmoop or Wiki if it is hard to understand the olden language. This will help a lot. He grades easily and you must put in lots of effort. Easygoing guy.

Professor Harkey is so good at what he does. His online class is so organized and easy to follow. He gives every assignment 2-3 weeks, which is very fair for an online student. Five major assignments, one research paper, short answers and a final. This class will not consist on essays, but will concentrate on writing in the real world. Get him!!!!!

The online class is clearly laid out at the beginning of the course. You can work ahead on assignments. No book was required for class, he provided all the material. He was inspiring, graded quickly and very responsive. The class is easy if you invest time in following directions. The research paper will need solid effort and time. HE'S GREAT!!!!

I have nothing but great reviews for this professor. He really made me like an english class again. Took him online it was all laid out perfectly and he responds very quickly to any questions or issues you may have. If you are looking to take him trust me you won't be disappointed.

Grammar & Rhetoric was a nice class and I learned a lot. Assignments were easy and discussions are a large portion. Book PDF provided so no purchase needed. Do the work and pass easily! No midterm, Final was an easy essay. 3 week modules so plenty of time to complete if you have a full class load.

Professor is tough but fair- will be understanding if you consistently try! Online classes are all lined out pretty similarly: weekly reading assignment where you respond to the lecture notes/readings, a second assignment where you reflect on what you learned, and a weekly discussion post with two quality responses. Very easy to develop a routine.

The class was a lot of work but overall my favorite of the semester. He gives great feedback and is very clear in what he wants from you and in each assignment.

Took the short summer course, two weeks per module was more than plenty of time to complete the assignments. Follow the syllabus and finish assignments and you will make an A. Not sure why a few people are complaining... they must have expected not to do any work.

A lot of work in both ENGL3312/HUMA1301, but it's reasonable and simple. Just do the work correctly and you get full credit. He responds quickly, gives more than enough time to work, and gives good feedback. I made an A+ in both classes. I highly recommend any of his classes.

Great professor gives great feedback and marks his paper on time. The work load is very reasonable. Take this professor you will not regret it. Wish I could take his classes again because he actually wants you to pass and not fail you.

Harkey is a good professor, he has a love for cinema and he's quite knowledgeable. However, he is paper heavy, meaning there are a total of 8 essays in the semester, 20 analysis questions and a summary all due within one week. A LOT of writing papers and watching films to compensate for not having a final. THIS IS NOT A BLOW OFF CLASS AT ALL.

Syllabus is clear and organized. Every Unit is pretty much laid out the same; Summary Writing (500 words), DB (300 words w/ 3 replies), Peer Review (Composition Draft w/ 3 peer reviews). There is a research paper that is 8 pages long (not counting Title pg, Abstract, and References). Final is similar to a correspondence assignment in previous Unit.

I just took his summer 3430 class. There's lots of work in the short amount of time we had for this class. Be prepared to read a lot, answer discussion questions and write papers, including a research paper. He's easy to follow for an online class. As long as you do all your work you will get an A. I would take his class again if I had to.

He assigned between 5-7 assignments per unit and gives a three week time span to finish them. He is super nice and makes the learning as painless and interesting as possible. Honestly a great teacher and would gladly take his class again!

TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He is amazing. The work is plenty but easy. You will learn. if you dont do the work you wont get an A. Do all the work, you get an A. :)

This Professor makes English extremely easy imo, I really recommend him because of his very generous grading style as well as teaching. He's very real and all you have to do is read the instructions and submit your assignments. Please do not take advantage of his generosity when turning in assignments late.

If your'e comfortable writing, then this class is easy. 6 units with 4 writing assignments each (textbook summary, open discussion, peer-review, major) + Final essay (like a textbook summary). If you follow his instructions, then the class is an easy A; but, there is a lot of writing since all 25 assignments are basically essays.

He's an awesome, awesome professor - took 2 classes with him this semester and they were the lowest stress ever. Simple, clear instructions, assignments always made sense, lots of free choice for topics and stuff. Also very sweet and seemed genuinely invested in my participation and my work in the class.

Took for a summer course. Read a book a week. The books were not my favorite however that is a personal opinion. There were 2 DBs each along with responding to 3 other students. Other than that, it was an Easy A if you follow the criteria.

This professor makes the class manageable with clear instructions. Doing the work, like reading, discussions, and papers, is key to doing well. unstuck study was super helpful for staying on top of it all.

Professor Harkey was a really easy going professor, every week we had new papers to write. But his instructions and rubrics were very clear so it was easy to know exactly what it is you need to do. If you did it wrong he'd let you know ASAP in a nice and straightforward manner. No complaints whatsoever. Just a lot of readings and essays to be done.

Definitely take this professor. Expectations are clear and he does help by giving feedback or answering questions. Each module has a major assignment, peer-review for that assignment, a lecture reflection essay, and a discussion. Overall pretty easy just make sure you don't miss deadlines, he doesn't accept late work. His grading is pretty lenient.

All papers are expected to be turned in on time. There is no excuse to turn in papers late as he won't accept them and he gives you ample time to complete all assignments.
