EXTREMELY boring man, do not take his section of clinical if you can help it. Other teachers will teach this class as well and they are much better!
Tremendous clinical experience. If students ask questions in regards to his practice, class will be extremely insightful. However, he does become redundant every so often. Textbook not necessary but attendance will boost test scores.
most relevant and interesting course material (to clinical psych) i've had in a psych class. truly wants his students to do well and therefore very accessible and gives fair tests. well informed on current research.
most relevant and interesting course material (to clinical psych) i've had in a psych class. truly wants his students to do well and therefore very accessible and gives fair tests. well informed on current research.
Not a hard class, but boring as hell. He consistently bored the class to sleep. He talks more about Buddha and dragon boats than psychology. Instead of learning the DSM, we learned things that we already know. A waste of time, take another professor for this class.
Very interesting guy! Because his private practice is his primary profession, he gives very relevant information in class which is different from what you'll get in most classes. He does tend to drag out the same slide every now and then (and the fact that the class is at night doesn't help) but still, don't hesitate to take this class!
I thought he was great. He is interesting and really wants the class involved in what he is teaching. He cares about the subject and wants you to too. I would highly recommend him.
Very nice and knowledgeable man. Really helped me with grad school searches and the like. I would recommend him wholeheartedly.
He dragon boat races, rides his bike, hates smokers, runs, hates cell phones, thinks he's the greatest of all psychologists alive... If you can get past his awful personality and stupid anecdotes, the class is useful and you will learn something. Although I have learned to no longer want to go into psych!!!
I really liked him at first, but when I found out that he goes out of his way to help promising students and wasn't too helpful with my grad school search, I felt unimportant. His class is super boring and I get the idea he is full of himself, though. I would suggest a different teacher because I think the subject has potential to be interesting.
At 2 1/2 hours, class is very tedious with Dr. Hawthorne. I'm sure he's a nice guy at heart, but his lectures are often disorganized and his comments long-winded and extremely opinionated. He's definitely not every student's cup of tea, despite his great reputation in the Advising Office. On a plus side, his exam study guides are very helpful.
Hawthorne's class has taught me the most useful of any Psych class so far at Pitt. He is very knowledgeable about the field as a whole, and I feel informed on current issues in psychology. Dr. H emphasizes participation, so be sure to speak up in class and use the discussion board. Overall, I would highly recommend the course and the professor.
Avoid this class
40+ years of field experience which translates well to the classroom. The big problem is that lecture is 2.5 hours long and he feels the need to fill every second. He deviates from the topic a lot, which can get annoying. Also, he focuses too much on meditation and not enough on the other forms of therapy, which isn't what I signed up for.
While Prof. Hawthorne does like to lecture, the material and activities were usually interesting enough to keep my attention throughout the night class. Participating in the discussion really helps. He is extremely accessible outside class and generous with make-ups and grading. He also brings extensive personal career experience, always a bonus.
Not bad for an upper level psych class. You have a quiz each week based on class and readings, he's a pretty easy grader. Once in a while you have to write a case study. Only graded on quizzes/case studies and participation. Really into meditation so he takes the first 5-10 minutes to meditate. Likes when you participate.
Was excited to take this class, but quickly became a pain after the first few weeks. Talks on end- wants you to participate but hardly gives any chance to do it. Weekly quizzes with "objective" questions that are poorly written and sometimes outright confusing. Essays/case studies are fine. Nice enough guy, just doesn't work well as a professor.
I loved him as a professor due to his clinical experience and field knowledge. He's a very interesting person interest-wise and brings that to lectures. There are no in-class quizzes or exams, just weekly online "mini-exams". Some questions weren't talked about in lecture but you can find online.
The best. As someone who really despises modern categorical psychology, I really vibed well with his sense of holistic therapies and resilience-based approaches. His perspective is second to none and refreshing in a culture of psychopharmacology and cold, impersonal fad therapies. Really gets down to what matters in helping people.
He should stick to the clinic in all honestly. I fall asleep in his night class because he just reads off of the slides and does not go into any greater detail than that. His exams are even worse because of typos and really poorly written subjective scenarios. He even mixed up the concept of sexuality and gender during the diversity unit!
If you want to learn about clinical psychology and treatment for specific disorders, this is not the class for you. Only spent three classes on actual treatments, the rest was him talking about mindfulness and meditation. Exams are poorly written, riddled with typos, and confusing. Doesn't give rubrics or instructions for projects.
If you're majoring in psych & considering a job in counseling I highly recommend this class. Prof draws from his experience as a therapist during lectures, is an easy grader, and a really nice guy. He doesn't focus a lot on specific treatments for disorders, but this class helped me figure out if a career in psychotherapy was for me.
Class is pretty easy and Dr. Hawthorne is flexible and understanding. There is a lot of lecture and it can get boring sometimes but I would say that I learned a lot from this class about therapy.
His online class was a lot of watching very long lectures, but the content was interesting and there are weekly discussion posts. Didn't enjoy that he did a group project with an online class, but it wasn't too bad. He's very responsive to email and genuinely wants to help you out. Exams are open note and straight from lectures and the book.
If you're taking 1210 to learn about clinical psych, avoid this class - Dr. Hawthorne spends a lot of time discussing self-care, meditation & mindfulness practices. If you're into that, then go ahead and take it. Tests are straightforward but full of spelling mistakes, but besides that Prof is very considerate & available, even if he's boring.
Hawthorne's online class is incredibly confusing and makes it difficult to be successful in the course. His exams have so many spelling and grammatical errors that it makes it difficult to understand what the questions are asking, and his rubrics for major assignments are also incredibly vague. This class seems like an afterthought to him.
Online class. Weekly discussions, journals, and 4 exams (open note). Reviews b/f exams, grades fairly, makes expectations clear. Boring recorded lectures, a lot of misspellings in exam questions, did not grade bulk of assignments until last few weeks of semester. Overall, solid teacher. Easy-ish A. Just put effort into assignments, you'll do well.
Dr. Hawthorne is clearly very knowledgeable, but his class lectures are very dry and it was hard to pay attention for two and a half hours. Exams are very fair and if you plead your case for an answer, he usually will give it to you. Nice guy though.
Dr. Hawthorne is so knowledgeable and a great person to talk to about clinical psych. Classes were long and lectures could be boring at times. Tests were online though and he was always accessible. He is a great guy with an amazing heart and you do learn interesting things. Just don't be tired going into class.
He is a really nice guy but one of the most boring people I've met. Lectures are long and dry. Exams are application based and there is a ton of reading to do outside of class. He is disorganized and bad with tech but is knowledgeable about the subject. Take it only if you love psych and find it interesting.
Hawthorne is knowledgable in the subject and has interesting stories to share and seems like a nice guy but speaks so quietly. I sat in the 3rd row of lecture and still couldn't hear him. He is not tech savvy and hard to reach outside class. TAs don't do anything. Tons of reading each week. Not hard to do well if you do all the homework
Driest, most boring lecturer ever. Tons of homework outside of class on Cengage, the whole class had issues with getting it to work and he couldn't do anything. Both he and the TA were hard to reach. Class material is geared toward people going to the clinical side of psych.
The class is easy if you took AP Psych but the lectures are beyond boring and extremely difficult to pay attention to. He seems like a nice guy but you cant reach him outside of class bc he barely understands technology. It was fine when I didn't have to go but now he has implemented in-class TopHat because so many students stopped attending.
Didn't enjoy this class. Professor came in late sometimes (actually, most of the time). He would stay on at least 2-3 slides each lecture, and would barely explain. Meanwhile there were supposed to be about 10-15 slides. Attendance wasn't mandatory, he tried Tophat once and that's it. It should've been interesting but he made it so boring.
Dr. Hawthorne is very knowledgeable and passionate but his lecture get boring at times. It is a lot of information and he does talk for the entire class. The majority of the class is on the online textbook where you'll have weekly assignments and quizzes. The tests he gives are completely application based but they were online/take home/open notes.
Dr. Hawthorne is a great prof to take for psychopathology. The 3 exams were multiple choice, online, and open note (drops the lowest exam). There were weekly "MindTap" assignments but they were easy and didn't take very much time to complete. Only downside to Hawthorne is that his lectures can be pretty boring so it's hard to stay engaged.
Loved Hawthorne and this class was super easy! His lectures are very boring and the majority of your learning is going to be through the textbook, which was actually kinda interesting to do. There are only 3 exams and the lowest score is dropped, all being online and open note
The class and homework program (MindTap) were full of technical issues that often ate up a lot of class time. He gave extensions when the homework didn't work. He was a bit quiet and I couldn't catch 100% of what he said while I took notes.
This class was easier than expected. The majority of the work was online on Cengage MindTap, which is good because the lectures can get boring. There were 3 online, open-note exams, and the lowest grade was dropped. A decent part of the final grade was based on MindTap completion. There were a lot of technical difficulties with MindTap though.
Very easy class, but the lectures are quite boring. You don't need to go to lectures just skim the textbook before each exam. They're all open note.
Just received email saying that he is going to implement tophat. Why just say it before the add/drop period? It's definitely not the first time he taught this class. I can't help but think he is being negative about his class.
People say his lectures are boring but I think they're relaxing! You likely won't learn much from them, but it's super (criminally) easy to get an A if you read the textbook and do the homework, which takes maximum two hours a week. Relies a lot on technology stuff, but doesn't really know what he's doing with it. Tests are easy.
This class is very easy, because attendance is not needed. There were Tophat assignments during class, but I just did them at home lol. The tests are pretty easy i guess and I would recommend this because there isn't much work.
Dr. Hawthorne was an incredible professor.People say his lectures are boring but in reality they are not. He gives personal connections to the topics and makes learning them very easy. Exams can be a little tricky but they are open book. We used Mindtap which was riddled with technical issues but he was very understanding.
Professor Hawthorne is genuinely a sweet guy, I can tell he likes what he teaches. He isn't as accessible as a lot of my emails did not get answered when I had trouble with the homework. His lectures are quite boring, but that could also be because it was a morning class. However, Exams and weekly MindTap assignments were easy.
The worst. Should be an easy class. It's interesting materials and easy assignments, but he gives no basis for grading and will take points off with no feedback or reason. He has so many typos that you just don't know what he's asking. And he doesn't know how to use canvas honestly. This may be my worst grade this semester and it shouldn't be.
The lectures were incredibly boring. The tests were open note however a majority of the words in the questions and answers were spelled wrong which made it difficult to understand. The other assignments did not have a clear grading standard. He was also very bad with technology and his and the TA's emails were not readily available.
When I did go to class, the lectures were a bit boring. I skipped for most of the semester and just read the textbook and skimmed the PowerPoints and I was fine. Graded on weekly homework and 5 online exams.
This class was fine. Dr. Hawthorne is nice. I'd recommend anyone who needs another psych course to take this class with him. I totally get why people say his lectures were boring. If you're interested in the content though, it's not bad at all. Not too much work at all. The exams were not too difficult and open note, just read the textbook.
Lectures are somewhat boring but the contents are interesting. Dr. Hawthorne is pretty nice though. All homework and exams are online, easy A.
Class is an easy A but super disorganized. Lectures are boring and not helpful. Cengage is tedious but a guaranteed 100%. Exams are online and open notes. Often assignments would be missing video links and I would have to email him/TA to fix it which was annoying. You will get a good grade but I didn't enjoy the lectures or take away much from them
Dr. Hawthorne really cares about the content. Every time I reached out he responded and was able to meet with me. If you read the textbook, you'll get an A. Weekly homework is easily completed and helpful for the exams (which are open note + online).
Dr. Hawthorne is a boring lecturer, however he is a sweet professor. He is very understanding, and his exams/coursework is not bad at all. His exams are online which was a plus. I did not go to lecture all semester, until he required attendance due to people not showing up.
Entire class was online so you do not need to go. Easy A
Professor Hawthorne is very kind and cares about his students. The material on slides during lecture is a little overwhelming but completing the MindTap is helpful. There are weekly online quizzes but are very easy and are great grade boosters. Very interesting and informative class.
Lectures are a bit boring and there is a LOT of material on the slides but Dr. Hawthorne is great. Exams are online and MindTap/Cengage makes the class more engaging. It was an easy A - I definitely recommend taking him!
Dr. H is a really caring professor. He wants all his students to do well and is very willing to help! He had the same due date for the same assignments every week which makes it easy. Exams are online and open book. The lecture can be a little boring, but his humor makes it better. He uses MindTap with the textbook which is a great grade booster.
Professor Hawthorn is a very caring teacher who wants to help you pass this class. His exams are online. And it is the same work load every week, which lessens the stress of knowing whats coming up. Beware of tons of typos.
such an easy class. the main grades of the course are mindtap assignments that give you unlimited attempts for every question to get right. there are a few exams, but they are online and pretty straightforward. I only went to lecture the first few weeks because they get pretty boring, but looking through the slides gives you what you need
By far one of the easiest classes ever. Lots of work but easy to grind out quickly (basically 100% if you finish it). Slideshows posted on Canvas so you don't need to go to class (he couldn't figure TopHat out - might change in future). Tests are open-note and online. Lectures can be a bit boring but he's super nice and content is interesting.
Dr. Hawthorne is a nice guy, but his lectures are very boring and optional. So much unnecessary and tedious homework such as journaling and AI discussions, which for the former he doesn't even give full points for sometimes. His exams are online, but most questions are from the supplemental readings and videos, making them annoying to study for.
Lots of discussions, quizzes and exams, however very easy and simple to get out of the way. He always responds to emails and wants everyone to succeed in his class. Lectures were very intresting, including real life senerios, however attendance wasn't mandatory. Go to his review sessions and you'll be good!
veryyyy boring didn't learn much stopped showing up to lecture because they were pointless just read textbook, but it is a very easy class
Good teacher, but such a boring class. Your grade was made up of weekly exit tickets, 5 tests (all take home online), 5 journals, pack backs, and mindtap assignments. Attendance wasn't mandatory but that was only because TopHat was giving him trouble. Overall it's pretty hard to fail the class because he gives so many grade boosters.
Dr. Hawthorne has a lot of knowledge about his field and it can be very interesting to listen to his lectures. This being said, he has issues with the online aspect of his class and most of his assignments are online, and a lot of his lecturing doesn't coincide with what you need to know for the assignments.
He was a nice guy so I felt bad for him but an incredibly boring lecturer. That being said, the class was very fair with five open note online exams and weekly online assignments, so once you get into a routine the class is pretty easy. He couldn't figure out TopHat so attendance wasn't mandatory but maybe he'll figure it out next time idk.
Dr. Hawthorne is very sweet and it is easy to see his passion for what he is teaching. However, his lectures were boring. Attendance used to be mandatory, but he didn't understand top hat so people stopped showing up. All materials are online, all exams are take-home (even the final), and the assignments are simple and only helped my grade.
very kind prof and all the work can be taken home. Easy A if you do all the works carefully.
Dr. Hawthorne was my favorite professor last semester! He is so sweet and cares about his students. Although lectures may get boring, he tries to make them as entertaining as possible. Attendance was mandatory, but it was hard to navigate Tophat, so he stopped taking attendance. Exams are from the textbook, and homework is a grade booster.
Grade consists of weekly exit tickets, 5 exams, 5 journals, mindtap assignments, and packback question and 2 responses. His lectures are very boring and attendance isn't mandatory, so 12 people show up. It is a very easy A as long as you do well on the exams and do the assignments (assignments are easy A and clear-cut, just do them)
Dr.Hawthorne is the best for psychopathology. You might find his lecture is not that interesting but he will try his best to give you the best grade. No attendance with online assignments.
I loved Professor Hawthorne. The topic and lectures can be kind of boring sometimes, but he is so sweet and tries to make the most of it. The workload was also all online with Thursday-Sunday to take exams at anytime. If you've taken AP Psych, this is basically a review. Not too interesting of a class, but he was really nice and experienced in it.
Sweet professor and his class will NOT hurt your GPA unless you intentionally don't do any of the assignments. At the beginning of the course he would start the class with some meditation and that was fun. Lectures can be a bit long and drag on, but I prefer that than a difficult lecturer. Exams are online and there are online assignments too.
He is so nice all the work is easy and online
William is so nice and all of his class worth taken. all work is online
William do a good job
The class is all online, textbook required and he does packback. 5 exams which are decently easy. His lectures are really boring but the material itself is interesting. He is very bad with technology, usually takes him a half hour to actually start lecture.
SO. BORING. Any class with him is an absolute snoozefest. That being said its so easy to get an A.
An old professor who is trying his best. The topic itself is interesting, but he talks in such a boring way. He also struggled in every class with the technology. I liked the packback assignments, and class was pretty easy. Tests are open-note
I never came to this class primarily because it just wasn't worth it. This class is an easy A as long as you use the lecture slides and TA notes for your open note at home exams. I found the content incredibly interesting, I just would prefer more engaging lectures. Attendance is not mandatory and he also ran into technical issues consistently.
He is a nice professor, and I found the content super interesting. I only ended class in the first few weeks because he tended to ramble about the same thing for an hour, and attendance isn't mandatory, and he posts all the slides on Canvas. All the exams and homework are online, and you have a full week to complete them. Super easy A.
Really interesting class, also really easy A if you just do all the homework on time. Attendance wasn't mandatory so I rarely went to lecture and still did good on all the exams. Lectures I did go to were very interesting and he is a great teacher.
Mr. Hawthorne is a very kind, experienced and outgoing professor who is very funny. He did a really good job of relating his work experience as a clinical psychologist with the class content. Also, Mr. Hawthorne emphasized that the students should be able to really understand the class material and relate it to the real world.
Such a sweet old man with somewhat engaging lectures. Class was very easy and tests are all open note.
Probably my favorite class of all time, and I don't think this will ever change.
the sweetest man ever. lectures were a bit boring, but the content was interesting, and the class was relatively easy as long as you put in the effort.
His lecture can get a bit boring, but I really enjoyed having Hawthorne for class. He's very sweet and understanding, and I found the content of the lectures to be very interesting. All exams were online/open note, including the final. Weekly homework assignments were also relatively easy to complete to keep your grade up. Definitely recommend.
Dr. Hawthorne is so nice. I always enjoyed going to lectures-- he was engaging and he often did a 5 minute class meditation with us which I thought was so nice. The tests can definitely be tricky, but if you read your textbook and pay attention, you can definitely succeed. Him and the TAs always gave great feedback on assignments as well.
lectures are extremely boring, and usually don't contain much relevant information anyways. he's a very kind guy, but you won't really learn much from his class. all tests and homework are online, and attendance isn't mandatory (posts all slides on canvas). easy to get an A but just soooo boring
Dr. Hawthorne is such a caring, nice guy. Interesting class, but I'll be honest, I showed up maybe 5 times all semester. Tests are open note and take-home. Real easy class, and Dr. Hawthorne is truly a real nice fella.
Hawthorne is SO boring. I had him for psychology of personality and psychopathology. He always gets distracted and goes off on a tangent during class. That being said, as long as you complete the work on time, its an easy A (grade is made up of exams, journals, and homework that is all virtual). Showing up to class is honestly useless.
Professor Hawthorne is very understanding of student stress. He starts class with meditation, exams are all take-home, there is a weekly homework module with multiple attempts, and there is a 300 word reflection for each unit. However, his lectures are dry and there is no attendance. Easy A, but not the best for actually knowing the information.
Prof Hawthorne is a sweetheart and cares for his students immensely. We would start every class with a 5-minute meditation and then get into the lecture material for the day. Weekly Mindtap homework assignments were assigned and after every exam there's a journal entry. Exams are take-home and open-note. Easy class, overall recommend.
Very kind hearted and personable. The coursework was completely online, you do not have to attend lecture though you should. Exams are online. The prof uses his experience in the field to enhance the students learnings. I look forward to taking more of his courses.
I adore Dr. Hawthorne. It is true, his lectures can be dry, but he is such a sweet person to talk to outside of class. The class itself is very easy; all homework is based on the reading, and exams are all online. He implemented a new project, which is also pretty easy and honestly pretty interesting. As long as you meet the deadlines it's a breeze
He was super nice and valued feedback and interaction in class. There are 4 300-word journal entries, 4 exams (including the final) and 1 4-part project about personality. Outside of class there are chapters assigned out of the textbook to read. Overall very manageable class. Sometimes we would start with a 5 minute meditation which was nice
he's sweet and seems like a good psychologist but is a horrible prof he is very monotone during lectures and attendance is not mandatory. it was overall an easy class (4 online exams, 4 journal, 1 project split into 4 parts) but he doesn't grade until the VERY end so you don't truly even know your grade the project was also just so messy
I actually really enjoyed his lectures. It's obvious he is passionate about what he's teaching and he cares about students. Started class with meditation and was big on prioritizing mental health. Class was super easy and exams are online. I would def take him again and recommend him!!
