He is a very smart man with a lot of interesting opinions. He is genuinley concerned with his students' futures in higher education. He is always willing to speak to students during office hours to help them with problems, even if they are not about class

Very smart guy but couldn't keep up with him. He rambles off information and you don't know what the hell he is talking about. You have to write a paper and he takes it very serious. He seems to love teaching and care about his students.

He loves history and drama! He loves to imitate the Godfather! I learned a lot, because I wanted to. As long as you visit his office hours, you will pass. Tests are easy: he gives you the definition and you write the term. Two 10 page research papers.

Horlor is by far a very intelligent professor. why he's at swc is beyond me. he requires two ten page papers and has tests. he has answers to nearly everything dealing with history and historical ideas and concepts, which primarily encompass many things.

A complete joke! Used class as a stand up. I had him for two different classes, and he used the exact lectures (and jokes). When an administrator came in, he suddenly started engaging students and asking questions. A fraud. Always in the bathroom.

The man is wonderful. He is clear, concise, and to the point. He is a personable, humorous man. All of his classes are conducted in the same matter: outlined notes, 4 or 5 easy quizzes, and 2 10 page papers for your midterm and final. GREAT professor! I took him for Hist 141 too!

Absolutely, one of the best professors I have ever taken on this subject. He is unbiased, and honest. If you are truly serious about learning about your mexican roots than I honestly reccomend him. If you are **** and feel that a white man shouln't teach H142, then you're unworthy of his teachings

I took his Hist100 and Hist106 classes. He can be a little intimidating but he is willing to help you all you need to do is ask. You take ALOT of notes in his class BUT his quizzes are EASY (if you take notes) and you have to write two 5-10 page papers. He really is knowlegdeable in the subject and his class is worth taking.

I didn't read one single word out of the 100 books that i was required to buy. 2-10 pg papers that are easy cuz you just paraphrase the books and cite them. When he lectures it's hard to follow and the quizzes are off of his lectures. Try to collaborate w someone on the notes if u can. If you get the notes wrong you get the quiz wrong which sux.

An awful bitter man. He shouts instead of speaking in a regular moderate tone of voice. His lectures have nothing to do with what the text book says. He asks for about 5 books which you never use. I disagree that you do not need all of the books, well, only if you have no interest in actually reading them :-) If you read the books as assigned the quizzes are a breeze. Entertaining lecture from a man who has probably seen almost everything. He does expect you to read the syllabus and then do the reading on your own.

This teacher was very good, but very hard. If you just want a class you can breeze through and pass, this is NOT for you. Two 10-page papers and five quizzes. He offers extra credit, too, which is the only way I got an A. Very passionate and very knowledgable. Take him if you actually want to learn something about history.

What an interesting class! Prof. Horlor really knows his stuff and actually makes history fun and interesting. Quizzes on each section based on notes (pay attention in class!) and 2 papers for midterm & final. Just follow the instructions and you will do well. I recommend him highly!

Professor Horlor is an educator who will prepare you for university studies. Even if you are not a history major take his world history classes just to broaden your intellectual horizons. Very challenging but also interesting and rewarding. He knows his stuff and ecnourages different opinions. Tons of reading and writing are req. Don't fall behind or you're toast. Talk with him outside of class and he's cool. Great preparation for a University level course. Those that grade him low need to get real, this is college not high school

I made it through the class and I'm proud to be one of the few who have made it. You do way too much much work for an entry level history class though. I'm never going to need to take another history class, and I had to type like 40 pages worth of work and and read 3 books. He adds more as the semester goes though.

Don't take this class unless its your major, or if you have no other choice. An A in the classes will take over 100hours in research and typing and visits to writing center.His tests are difficult unless you have a very trivial mind. (ie: names; dates; page #s) If your good at managing you time you stand a good chance, it didnt work for evry1 tho

Mr. Horlor is not an easy class. I'm taking 20 units and his class makes me sacrafice a lot, but if you're looking to become sharp take this class. If you're a lazy piece of trash, you should not consider this class. Lots of reading and lots of critical thinking.

I took him two times. You do learn alot in his class. He's a great teacher, and he'll help you out. This class is not that hard you just have to pace yourself. This man prepares you to do university level work. Remember to read and annotate what you're reading. If you need help visit his office hour. He wants you to succeed.

A lot of work but well worth it. Prof. Horlor will do whatever he has to, to help you pass with a decent grade. If you are eager to succeed, he is eager to help you. If you are just taking this class to get it out of the way but are not interested in learning or doing the work, he will ruthlessly weed you out. I loved him!! He was very REAL!

People say that he's the worse teacher, but he's actually one of the best teachers that I've ever had. A lot of students don't like him because he pushes them a lot and makes them work hard, but I assure you that when you finish his class, you will walk out of the door feeling accomplished.

Insane! Says he is out to fail whoever can't cut it at a real college. If he fails you he says the system failed you before you got to him. Says he is preparing you, but all he does is force you to write alot of reports which he isn't very helpful on. If you pass his class, it is becouse of your hard work, not him. This guy is a nut ball in class and isn't very organized but he knows his stuff, and you will learn a lot if you stick with it. Lots of reading and writing, I had more work in his class than 3 others I took combined. Don't expect an easy A or B, you will have to work to get a decent grade, but its worth it because he does prepare you to do well.

I took him for summer and there was a lot, a lot of material. The class is not too hard and you do learn a lot. However, you need to read many books, write many essays, and take many quizes. Horlor will NOT give you an easy A, the only thing was that I dont think he grades the essays properly, and there was many complaints on this by all students.

If you want to learn an unbelievable amount, and at the same time gain a useful and extremely helpful ally to help you along your college journey, Horlor is the BEST! His class is hard, and especially if taken during the summer, will consume you. But it's worth it!

if you are truly interested in this subject i would reccomened him. his class is very time consuming and takes a lot of work,you have to take really good notes and read every single text required; in the end you will become a better student. this was one of the most challenging classes i have taken

His inability to structure his lectures is ridiculous. He needs to learn a a few new words (Dichotomy, is apparently the only one he knows) He swears that he is the best professor on campus and bashes on every other Professor. His lectures were not all that amazing as some have stated, He sits through it the whole time and only jumps back in forth.

This guy thinks too much of him self. His only goal is to fail as many students as he can to prove that he is the best Professor out there. Half way through the class, and I was still waiting for him to give a meaningful or engaging lecture. Nothing surprising, take Ms. Gonzalez instead! My advice, Don't take him!

Before you take one of his classes you should be aware that this is a UC-level class, not a community college course. If you're looking for an easy A, stay far away from his classroom. This class requires a lot of writing and reading, and he grades tough. He makes you realize that you're not in high school anymore.

hes not a bad person or an extremely horrible teacher. hes simply unneeded. if you understand your there to try your hardest he will destroy your goal. he teaches a class as if you dont know how to write a paper. after focusing 2 wks on how to write a paper we finally talked about history for only 2 classes before being assigned the 10 page paper.

Well Mr. Horlor is a cool guy is just that his class is hard, expect a uc level type of course when you take him. Also expect a 10 page paper, and a lot of reading.

This class was just too hard mr. horlor is tremendously demanding and there is a lot but I mean a lot of work involved. I got a c in his class and honestly i deserved a B or even an A. There are other ways to get prepared for state and uc classes avoid this one.

This class was not at all what I expected at the begining. As time went by, I discovered I made the correct decision by taking Mr. Horlor's class. He is one of the best professors I have had. This class involves a lot of reading (I read approx 5 books), non-multiple answer tests, and 10 pages papers. I can assure you I learned more than history.

he is horrible! i dropped his class immediately. he swears he is an english teacher...talks way too much about how to properly write an essay- he thought he was so cool with his impersonations, but as a matter of fact, he just seemed even more lame.

He is a horrible instructor. Knowledgeable: yes; Brilliant: no. You know, he wouldn't be such a bad professor if only he had the patience and the skills to teach. He is also extremely arrogant and too caught up in his own thoughts and opinions--which aren't brilliant or amazing, by the way--to meet the needs of his students. Don't take him.

He's really helpful, allows students to come by and talk just about anything. Although, he has low tolerance with students who don't want to learn. He gives out a lot of writing assignment, most of the tests & quizzes are hard whether its open book or not. He goes off topic, but it connects to history. For a summer course, it was really hard. 5 weeks with 4 papers and reading 5 different books. Plus 3 fill-in quizzes and 3 reading quizzes. It's impossible! If you want an easy grade, don't take him. I doubt I'll pass him, but we shall see.

i took his summer class, it was not easy but he did pass me. now that i look back i really slide thru wit out readin most material he assigns (lots of books) and i barely pass quizzes.he gave me extra points jus to get dat c grade. so it is possible to pass but i rather not have taken him cuz it stressed me out

I got my A, but I worked for it. Do the extra credit; study for the quizzes; and you'll be fine. And go to his office hours. You will learn some real history in his class. Most of my classmates struggled, though. Be prepared to write.

A very funny Teacher. Makes jokes at least every minute. He somehow tricks you into learning something very important by relating it to a joke. This professor is a great teacher and you should realize the packets and handouts he makes during his personal time. You will learn alot from this class and also he will prepare you for a year college.

do not take him. he is pretty funny, and drinks a 2L of pepsi every damn day. you really dont even need to show up to class to pass. his essays (all 5 of em at least 3 pages +) are not talked about at all in class. its completly pointless. just study for the vocab quizzes and do the EC or good luck

Horrible teacher!!!! He rambles on in his lectures about stuff that isn't even related to what we are supposed to be learning. He gives way too much work and is extremly picky about how you do it.

The most challenging class I have ever taken. That being said, Professor Horlor taught me more than any other class. The study habits and critical thinking skills he helped to instill in me have proven invaluable at the university level.

i don't recomend a lot of work! had to read 2 books and write 2 6-8 page papers in the last 2 weeks. assigns papers on things he doesn't cover in class bulk of the class was historiography and the Greeks, didn't cover all the subjects in the course descrip. he took 30 pnts off my final paper because i criticized the book he chose in my critique.

Awful teaching skills. I showed up every day on time, did almost all assignments, even went to his office hours for help, & still failed. His lectures are completely irrelevant to any/all homework assignments & exams. He is ideal for students who prefer to waste their time in class & end up having to teach themselves everything just to pass.

So far the most influential teacher at SWC. There is a lot of work that will require you to read &write a whole lot but he will help you with anything you need. His lectures go out of subject and he gives a lot of papers but if you study with the guides he gives you, you'll be fine. Class is challenging but will set you on the correct mindset.

LOVE THIS GUY!!! He is very blunt about things he mentions about both history and the government, and makes everyone realize that history is ery enriching.Hard essays,but if you talk to him during his office hours, he'll help you.He's such a caring guy as well because he really wants everyone to pass just talk or see him if anything!totally recomm.

The best professor that I ever had. Took his History 104 class in the Fall of 1990 in my first year of college, and it really set a positive tone for the rest of my career. Wonderful, bright, and very helpful instructor. The students that are leaving negative comments are just lazy students that do not want to work hard to earn their grade.

Really helpful if you go to office hours. Very easy tests if you study. The papers he assigns have nothing to do with what we talk in class. I honestly think 10 pages is too for what he wanted us to do. There just isn't much to write about and you end up paraphrasing everything which pisses him off.

Very smart man with a lot of opinions. Knowledgeable about history and will never run out of things to say. Some things taught in class won't really help with completing course work; just be sure to read books assigned and be prepared to write good papers. You will not pass the class if you don't study for tests, papers, and quizzes.

Very knowledgeable, but not an easy class. 15 out of 45+ finished course. A lot of reading and very detailed papers required, but gives lots of extra reading material to help. You will Learn a lot if your into history and reading.

He is very interesting, even if you end up not getting a decent grade you will have interesting things swarming through you head. Id recommend taking his class during election time, he will tell you all you need to know about the candidates. overall his class is HARD! but fun. he likes singing songs pertaining to the time hes teaching, it awsome!

Best teacher ever. At first he can be a little intimidating but in reality he is as sweet as sugar. Very intelligent man whose only purpose is to help you develop. I highly recommend this class. Very hard class however it is easy to pass if you attend class, do the work, do the extra credit, and ask for help. :)

He provides better education than most of what you can find in university. He is a true scholar and can elaborate on any subject of interest. The work is challenging but he manages to make himself available to help every student improve and get a better understanding of the subject matter.

Being honest when i say this, Professor Horlor is one of the best teachers i ever had. This class is not an easy A, the work is challenging and hard. But, with that being said, the things you learn in this class are definitely applicable to your college/academic career. Lots of writing and in order for you to past the test you must study!

Prof. Horlor is probably the best teacher I've ever had. He is incredibly bright, and is always willing to help when needed. He offers office hours and a lot of extra credit essays. His class made me practice a lot of writing which I hadn't done in a while, and I'm sure this was really helpful for my academic future. He's also very funny, take him!

Started the class but dropped after a few weeks to avoid getting a W. While I was in the class, he never got around to talking about history, claiming he was "teaching us how to think." Mostly he ranted about various topics and berated students, claiming we don't know how to act. He doesn't know either. I didn't need to put up with the abuse.

Totally recommend this course! He is very helpful and knowledgeable, but you need to do the work. As long you study for the quizzes, prepare for your papers, and do extra credit essays, you should be able to get an A.

This was the worst class EVER. i cannot begin to describe how bad the experience was. I was a straight A student in English 115 and as soon as i got to his class he told me i was ignorant and basically told the whole class that we were not "real" students and that if we didnt understand it was all our falt.If you want your life to be hell take him

Even that his class is so hard you can easily get a good grade if you do your work, a lot of essays and readings. Be sure to be on time the first day or he will drop you from the class.

Although he is always willing to meet with a student during his office hours it is because it is much needed because he does not lecture, he rants about topics that are totally irrelevant. Might as well take an online class. He is also very belittling and has VERY little discretion about grades.

Extremely disorganized which makes it difficult to keep track of what's going on. Required 3 books and we didn't even use any of them except for extra credit. Quizzes are too difficult. Gives too many packets. Fails to understand that we're not all history majors and that most of us are just taking this class because it's a requirement.

Even though this is only History 100 class, the class is incredibly difficult. This class should only be taken by people who can buckle down and do the work and time manage. Procastinator Stay Away! You will not make it in this class. I should know, I am one and I deeply regret taking this class. 10 pg research paper and 5 pg historiography essay.

This class is not easy. He made us do a 7 and 10 page essays. The 7 page essay is not very hard, but the 10 page essay is hard. He is not a bad person, but his class take all your time by doing reading and the essays. however, if you go to his office his is helpful, but not that much in class.

he gives out 6 quizs total and 2 huge papers. first one is a 5 page paper and second one is a 10 page paper. he goes on and on about history that it seems none of it is on the test or has to do with the 5 page and 10 page research paper that has to be due. not helpful at all and you have to have like 3 to 6 books to do all the work that is given.

this teacher is very demanding of his students. the entire class is spent preparing for papers and not on the tests. you have to study for the tests at home, he never even covered any of the material. l failed papers that l'm sure other professors would have given me an A for. and l only passed the class because the dean stepped in. DON'T TAKE IT

Later is harder because the papers required From more info but at the office hours is when the help comes he helps you to know what has to be improved, now I'm gonna miss his class

Tough professor! Really makes you work, several quizzes and few research papers. Good lectures but can get distracted at times. Other than that be prepared to get many speeches on other stuff not pertaining the class. Other than that you will learn some good history lessons.

BEST professor I've ever had! He's historian & scholar, 30 yrs experience, methodical. Reading & writing skills a must, 2 succeed: U need 2 go C him @ office hours, show interest, avoid cockiness, he's quick to knock U down from cloud 9. Horlor is a professor that you will either love or hate. His lectures are very entertaining and full of content. Reading the text in his class is a must. Also review all the terms that he assigns in the booklet before each tests. Make sure to go to the Writing Center to get revisions on your historiography research paper. Don't miss class either.

affordable books! & gives detailed instructions so theres no room to leave mistakes or it's your own fault. Wants you to give your best work & lets you improve grade. However, if you have a question,he makes you ask it during his office hours which is a huge inconvenience & doesn't promote class discussions. Mainly lecture. LOTS of deep reading!

Seems like a good professor but for 30 + years in the field, he loves to get side track. He tells you to buy the books, which are hardly ever used in class since you mainly work with packets about an inch thick, and then class discussion is almost non-existent. You want to discuss something, see him in office hours where he actually teaches you.

DONT TAKE! Office hrs a must to pass! But get ready to wait in line w/ others seeking help. no class discussion& lectures w/ long tangents. have a Q? Tells u to go to his office hrs. & if late or back from bathroom, he makes u wait in the corner for his permission to sit down. Otherwise, very clear in criteria for assignments. Make sure u read!!

He gives really great feedback, although he might seem scary at first, he's really nice when u get know him. But don't get me wrong, he WILL make you work for ur grade! Horlor is an interesting professor, he is in a way passionate about history and gives you a taste of a normal university class. It can get boring sometimes, so you really have to pay attention since his grading is based on quizzes, tests, and essay papers. His office hours are your only hope to pass, do all the extra credit! At the end, you learn.

Horrible professor. Gave us a lecture about how a telescope is a time machine one time. Showed us a video about the domestication of the wolf in class when we should have been learning about early european civilizations. Is extremely anal when it comes to grading papers and listing sources. The class size dropped from 32 to 7 by week 4. Never again
