Great teacher and very funny. All we do is take notes in class. He makes history very fun. Its easy to get a good grade as long as you take notes. Also, he does not give homework and the papers are easy to write.
Western Civ Spring 2010. Lots of lecture. Maps, 2 essay papers with refs, pop quizzes and 2 exams. Participation helps a lot. The more you engage in class the more forgiving he is on final grade. Don't plagiarize. He will look for signs of plagiarizing. Use writing CTR if you have trouble not plagiarizing. Good prof for electives; Highly Recommend!
He can be funny in class, however, he likes to pick on the same students in class instead of picking on different people. He is very picky when it comes to essays and grades it as if it was an English class instead of history. Overall, he is ok but I would not recommend him
I just finish this class he makes the class interesting, he makes history funny and as long as you attend class participate and take notes you will pass this class with no problem. I would tell everyone to take this class
He blows at teaching. All he does is talk and asks you questions expecting you to know the answers before he's even gone over the material as if you're a mind reader. He's "funny" if you like cheesy jokes. The workload isn't bad. Usually no homework just an occasional essay here and there.
This professor is funny he makes you want to learn about history I just took his class and as long as you participate take notes and attend class you will be just fine. I would highly recommend this professor
GREAT teacher. History is my worst subject, but I still managed to get an A. He's funny, keeps you engaged in the lecture, and has easy to follow power-points. Highly recommended.
I love him. He is so funny. He was a little tough on grading the papers but his lectures are so interesting. i would so recommend him. I took an eight week course and got an A.
Mr. Howes was the best professor I've had yet in college. Here's what you need to know. 1.Don't buy the book, every thing on exams comes from lectures. 2. He gives you a study guide for the exam, all of the exams are written answers. No multiple choice. Essay format. 3. He's hilarious. He's a really awesome teacher.
I took him for Western Civ also. I wish I'd taken him for US part I. Lots of Lecture and Notes. Essay exams. Some Pop quizzes. Some Essay papers and research paper if 12 week class. Great lectures. Asks questions assuming you can form two thoughts in your head and explore the connections. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Funniest guy ever cusses when he messes up so far my favorite teacher highly recommend take notes and go to class you will do amazing
Super funny! Super easy!
Professor Howes is the best professor at NOVA-woodbridge, he teaches in a way you fully understand. I had his class for almost 3hrs; two days out of the week and time flies by.. The best Professor!!
He's a funny, cool guy but his teaching style is not for me. Just lecture and notetaking, no hands on learning. Notes don't flow or transition well.Class time is easy but I struggle with tests,(essay only,w/ hard grading) He says he is preparing us for 4yr college but does not teach in that quality in my opinion.
He make History class so easy and fun to learn. It was never boring nor tiring to be in his class because he has such a good sense or humor.
He is a really nice teacher. Passed all his exams. Didn't really need a textbooks. Whatever is on his exams is what you take notes on during class. Makes class so fun. He is not an easy professor. His exams are in essay forms. there is no multiple choice questions. But as long as you know the material you will do great on the tests.
Howes is very funny and he tells alot of stories. Classes consist of just taking notes he makes the notes interesting. Exams are kind of hard because they are all written no multiple choice just study and you'll be fine. You have to EARN your A.
BEST HISTORY TEACHER EVER! Even though the class is two hours and forty minutes long, it goes by really quickly and you retain A LOT of info. w/o using the textbook. Attendance is a must since it is only eight weeks long. He is so down-to-earth and helpful.
Professor Howes is the best!! The class was VERY interesting, time passed very quickly. Exams are all essay style from the notes. No textbook (saves money). I highly recommend him. Plus, he's very funny!
Prof. Howes is amazing! He made class really fun AND interesting! No book needed, but all tests are written exams. :/
The BEST profeser I have ever had. Exams are written but he goes over everthing so clear that there easy. I will be taking my next history class with him.
Prof. Howes is a good teacher, but his tests are very hard. He checks too much spelling error like we're in an english class. Overall his pretty funny.
Prof. Howes is a funny guy, but his exams are very hard which count for basically your whole grade. If you like hard exams take his class
Professor Howes is awesome. Great discussions, and keeps the class interesting. Funny guy, but just make sure you still study for his tests. They can be a little difficult. Fun class, fun professor, just be ready to do some work (as you do with most classes).
Very funny guy, yes the class is essentially just a PowerPoint he keeps things interesting. I don't find his test were hard I missed a class and got an 85. Great guy would love to take any other classes he has to offer
I would definitely recommend Professor Howes! His class very entertaining. I actually looked forward to going to his class. The text book was never used. It's all note taking from what he says in class. Going to class was important. His tests were easy because he gave us a study guide with everything on the test. Plus he was super funny!
Totally awesome! And super funny!!
He was my favorite teacher! he was so funny and passionate about what he teaches and always kept the class interesting. Because he kept the class interesting its was easy to focus and do well on papers and tests. He is always willing to help and you are guranteed a good laugh everytime you attend his class! Try him out youll love him!!!
Fairly easy class .. BOOK NOT NEEDED AT ALL but notes are mandatory if you want to pass his WRITTEN EXAMS prepare yourself for a short essay long essay and definitions but down to earth teacher
Awesome. best professor I have had yet!
Great Prof. makes you want to go to class. Really funny and pretty easy.
Hilarious, Down to Earth, and Very Understanding! I would definitely recommend Mr. Howes!
He is very entertaining. I will be taking him again. He may not agree with the text book but that means we only need to read and copy his notes. He keeps your attention and is very funny. He gives the questions to the tests early for studying.
He was amazing and really funny! You learn so much, and have fun doing it. His tests are easy peasy as long as you pay attention.
this was probably the easiest class i took that semester.i understood everything perfectly! if you do your work you WILL be garenteed and A come to class! and i took an 8 weeks 2 times a week for 3 hrs and he ALWAYS let us out early.VERY GOOD PROFESSOR i recomment him for everyone. NO TEXTBOOK NEEDED!
This guy is easily one of the most entertaining professors I've ever had. He's hilarious. Dont bother to get the text book, show up(its hard to catch his missed info) and right down EVERYTHING he says. Tests are a bit challenging but study guides are provided. If you dont like to apply yourself, dont take this class though. He's not an easy A.
Good class. One of the few classes that I actually looked forward to going. Pretty funny guy and grading is easy. Just take notes though.
An awesome professor. Makes learning fun. I enjoyed going to class. Make sure to take notes and go to class.
All you do in class is take notes from the power points, which are also online. He is very funny and makes the class entertaining. This class is an easy A.
You gotta take this guy, he is absolutely hilarious!
AWESOME PROFESSOR! I would recommend him to everyone! He is absolutely hilarious. This class is the first class where I stayed attentive throughout the whole lecture.
Great Professor, Fun, and Funny. I would recommend him to all.
HE'S BEAST! He's a very visual thinker and tells stories to make you visualize what he sees when he teaches; you'll remember the lesson better if you pay attention to what he says rather than the power points. We did 3 paper's for his class and tests are essay format. Very fun and easy way to teach history. Don't get the book.
Awesome professor. Tests are hard but he provides a thorough study sheet. If you come to class and take notes, you have all the resources you need to get good test grades. There was one major paper, but it was enjoyable and interesting to complete because he lets students choose their topics.
He is honestly THE BEST history professor you can take at NOVA. I recommend him to all, and leaving his class on the last day was the saddest day ever. He is absolutely hilarious and very interactive. Love him! PLEASE do yourself a favor and take his class, you won't regret it.
funny class very easy going
this class was so much fun!! He was really funny and actually kept the class interesting. I really really hate history but when I took his class I actually enjoyed it. If you need a history, definitely take it with him
great teacher very entertained class he really knows the subject you deff need to take him, lister war he says and write ir down if there some late HW talk to him, he can work it out for yauu good luck..
He gives great lectures. Make sure you take notes. The tests were essay format, but they weren't hard. You just need to take the time to study it and do the homework. He is very entertaining. Take his class.
This wasn't easy material but he went over everything in a fun memorable way. He has a great attitude and will be sure to help you understand test material!I am taking him for my next 8 weeks as well!
I was a little nervous about taking Professor Howes because his exams are written. But for the most part they weren't that bad he gives a study guide. Participation is huge in his class he doesn't like when the same people answer the questions so be prepared to be called on randomly. Pretty nice overall.
Professor Howes is overall a nice guy. Participation is huge in his class he doesn't like the same people answering the questions so be prepared to be called on randomly. Take Notes! Write everything down. His exams come from the notes and his mouth. The exams are written but he gives a study guide. The exams were pretty easy for the most part.
He's a cool teacher, very down to earth and funny! I recommend his class for sure! FUN to take!
I love this professor! He is the best ever!!
Howes is the best! His lectures are interesting and funny. He tells a lot of good stories. His tests are essay but he give a complete review sheet before the exam. Highly recommend professor Howes!
IF YOU WANT TO PASS A CLASS AND ENJOY THE LECTURE PICK HIM
he is funnnyyyyy but his test are difficult if you cant write essays. great teacher though. made history fun
Mr. Howes, cares for his students education. He is very specific and reasonable with his assignments. His sense of humor makes his teaching skills more easier to understand, I would most definitely recommend this class to 1st year students who want to take a history class.
He makes history about things you would not have researched with a gun to your head interesting and engaging. He simply makes the class work.
Great teacher, extremely funny and makes lectures interesting. Adds a good deal of stories relevant to what you are learning so it's easier to remember the material. Tests are not hard and hands out a lot of extra credit
Professor Howes made me laugh and still managed to teach me incredibly well.
He is a great lecturer, but does not give you any slides for reference or to make certain that you did not forget anything while taking notes. You better take notes or you will not pass. So in short you are on your own with regards to notes.
Great Professor, wish I could take more like him.
Professor Howes is the funniest and most interesting professor I have had the pleasure of having so far. Everything he teaches and lectures on really just sticks with you. His stories (history-related and personal) are all fascinating. If you attend class and complete assignments, you are sure to pass!
Wonderful!!!!! Best teacher I have in a long while. He is funny, makes things easy to understand. He is not an easy A. Stay for his study sessions before a test.
Incredible lectures. Took history to a whole new level, and only wants you to soak up what you can. Lectures are key, if you miss them your in trouble because the tests are all essay. The better you are at notes, and if you do a rough draft of his study guides you'll nail this and learn something in the process. Take this professor
He gives amazing lectures, they are extremely hilarious. Although you must takes notes, so if you miss class then you're screwed because the exams are all based on that.
The only professor that prepared me for University.
I loved Western Civilization with Prof. Howes. He's nutty, but in a good way. He obviously loves his subject and keeps lectures interesting!
I have taken HIS 101 as an honors class. Even though the professor is hilarious during the lectures, he assigns hard but brief essays and gives out trick quizzes. What frightens me the most is that his exams are ALWAYS essay exams. I strongly recommend that you show up for every class, take plenty of notes, study often, and you will do fine.
TAKE PROF HOWES!! Best professor I have had to date. He makes class fun and interesting. GO TO CLASS! He cares a lot about attendance and participation. All of the material you will need to pass is from his lectures and review days. Exams are all essay but he gives you a study guide with everything you will need to know. Wish I could take again!
hate it
Professor Howes is an incredibly funny person and makes history fun to learn. There is no homework except for one essay and (if the class agrees) a take home test or two. Take thorough notes based on his lectures and the tests will be easy. The tests are multiple choice and then an essay and extra credit at the end. Long interesting lectures
Best teacher I ever had. EVER. He is hilarious and entertaining. For exam review he will give you very simplified versions of his already simplified lectures to study. Never liked history, this class is an exception. Didn't touch the textbook. Didn't ever need it. He only lectures and his lectures contain everything needed.
Professor Howes is funny but his class is really tough. If you don't like history I would't take him. His class is all lecture so you must go to class , and his exams were really tough. If you like history the you should take him but if you don't like history take a different professor.
Professor Howes is no wonder a great professor, but he is very biased. I took his Honors class, with only 12 people in class. He picks up his favorites, and literally ignores the rest. He is funny and everything, but personally I don't like him. He shows bias while grading papers as well.
Professor Howes is a wonderful professor. He is one of the few professors that actually taught me anything. I highly recommend him. I will be taking him again.
LOVE. Quite literally my favorite teacher I've ever had. No book, all lecture, take copious notes. I found it helpful to record his lecture audio and play it back later for better retention. He makes the material interesting, so it wasn't torture listening to them again. Tests are MC, one paper. Super interesting, hilarious and willing to help.
He never gives home work. You write one paper in his class and it's paced out during the entire semester. You turn it in the day of the final exam. He's extremely funny, easy to understand and his lectures are not boring. He's amazing would def take again.
A great professor and a great guy. Never a dull moment. If you want to take a history class and do well his class is the one.
love this guy and miss him! he was always lecturing and the exams are pretty normal. big writing paper is a big deal! never used the textbook, just pay attention and do the essay!
Non-Asian perspective with Professor Howes was awesome! His test were LONG and TIRING. It was open notes (textbook) and all the questions came from the textbook. Rent or buy the textbook because it is heavily used, you can't pass the exams or even try them without the textbook. He is extremely helpful and understanding! Replies quickly to emails.
Wonderful, funny, interesting class. Took 3 major tests that where 100+ questions and a 8-9 paragraph essay. (not as hard as it sounds.) Don't buy the book, didn't even open mine. Extra credit everyway you look. Final paper which I skipped and with all my extra credit I still passed with a B, though I did well on the tests. 10/10 would take again.
HANDS DOWN THE BEST TEACHER EVER. So funny and interesting. Participation counts but not that of a big deal. If you don't talk a lot during class, he may call on you once to ask you a question, but trust me no pressure. Gives you text review, and if you learn it, you pass. Easy class, no homework. Definitely recommend.
This mans is lit. His classes are lecture heavy, yet very interesting. We barely have any work to do apart from the essay and 2 tests. I love and look forward to his class everyday.
Well since this is required, Howes is a great lecturer. Homework in HIS101 is minimal. You will need to go to the class to get the lecture information though since he doesn't post it anywhere. He does, however, go over important information just before the test date to make sure everyone has an understanding of the information. Great guy. Funny.
Professor Howes is one of the best professors I have taken. His lectures are actually fun and his review days before tests makes them easy. No homework other than one paper throughout the entire semester and just the quizzes and tests. I would definatley take him again and you're lucky if you get him.
One, don't buy the book. You can skip maybe two or three of his classes and still pass. Yes, he will lecture the entire class, but he makes it enjoyable. There is never a dull moment with Howes. There are 3 exams, I personally passed them all with a 90 or higher, plus class review on exam. He's great, I would take him again if I could.
Professor Howes is an awesome teacher! I was in his 8am class but his lectures kept me awake. He ties a lot of personal stories into the lessons which helps you remember things. His exams are tough since they are all written but there are tons of opportunities for extra credit. Highly recommend taking his class. Just make sure that you participate.
Professor Howes is absolutely terrific. He makes everything he teaches so much more enjoyable. He ties a lot of personal stories to the topic you're learning so just know he will talk about his personal life many times in his lectures. However, every time he does talk about his personal life, it always ties back into what you're currently learning.
He is a funny guy and he won't make you fall asleep. I took the 8 week class you have to study to pass. Gives you good review papers and easy as he explains everything thats in the test. you can talk to him if you care about your grade he will care too. Great professor I would take him again but be aware that you have to study if you want to pass
He's such an amazing professor, I would recommend him for everyone. His lectures are amazing, he has awesome stories to tell, and he's SO funny! He's caring, there aren't a lot of assignments. The class is easy and the professor is very considerate and understanding.
He's is a great professor! You test are all essay form, but he gives a great review. Tons of extra credit opportunities! one paper on any subject related to history, max 4 pages. You will learn a a lot even if you don't like history.
Great Teacher. Take notes, study for exams. He gives a study guide and extra credit on exams. One persuasive paper 3 pages. He's very funny, helpful and leaves no HW.
Howes the one of the best teachers I've ever had. Like ever. He has some amazing stories and he teaches in such a manner that it really sticks. He's funny and helpful. And he's very personal, even though I took an 8-week class, i felt like I knew him a lot better than all of my 16-week professors. Plus the class is also an easy A.
Professor Howes made my least favorite subject really easy and interesting! His lectures aren't at all boring, he throws in some random stories to relate back to the subject. This class was really easy as long as you took notes. The notes highly helped for exams, so missing notes would throw you off a bit.
Professor Howes has the uncanny way of keeping his students engaged in the class. He is by the the funniest professor that I've had. If you miss two of his classes it will be extremely difficult to pass the class. If you attend the class and participate you should have no issue passing. His exams are quite difficult but if you study you'll be good.
Professor Howes is a great professor. He really cares about his students and does not take himself too seriously. He does ask a lot of questions that there is no way you could know the answer to, but he won't hold it against you. His tests are completely written, and have no multiple choice which is probably the only thing I didn't like.
He's an amazing professor, I've taken him for two history courses. The exams may seem hard because its all writing and no multiple choice but he gives you the answers for half the exam and the study guide is the exam. The only homework you have is an essay that's due at the end of the semester and it has to be three pages max and no more. Great guy
Don't skip class, and PARTICIPATE he takes notes and u get points for participation. I took his 8 week and got a 100% in the class. He tells you what will be on the test (there are long and short essays and descriptions). He explains history in a non boring way, funny dude. Don't use ur cell in class. Definately take him, you!! He's great!!
no homework, 2 quizzes tells you what to study for, gives you the exam before hand spend hour studying you get A gives a lot of extra credit took him three times now every class i took for 96%+ and i barely studied more than hour on his exams super easy if want easy A honestly take him you can not study and get B easy
He is a great professor. He makes you interact in class and answer questions about he is teaching and reading from the book. If you do your assignments and show for class and pay attention it should be an easy A. You have one paper due and it is divided into three different parts. Overall I LOVED his class best professor!!!
His lectures are awesome. He makes the whole lesson interesting. He makes his students participate in the class and he's got a great sense of humor. He is clear with his gradings and expectations. Gives extra credit if you turn your work on time, and there aren't a lot of homework. no quizzes. Tests are easy as long as you study and pay attention.
Amazing teacher! Literally was dreading this class and im so glad I took it with Mr. Howes. Hes very funny, lenient, and knows what hes talking about. He makes lectures interesting. Really amazing teacher, would take his class again if i could.
This is the second class I take with Howes and he is, once again, one of the best professors I've taken at NOVA. The class was very easy to follow and he wasn't very heavy on assignments to do at home, and the assignments that we did get were really easy. In both classes, I got a final score over 100% and that's because he offers easy extra credit.
Hes such an amazing teacher I HIGHLY recommend him. He is so funny and his test are so easy considering he gives you the test as your study guide. His test are essays not multiple choice but an easy A if you actually study.
He's an amazing teacher, and if I were to need to take a history class again I'd do anything to take him again. He is not heavy on homework, he gives breaks from lecture with some funny stories from his personal life to give a personal connection.
Professor Howes is awesome teacher! I don't like history and I was so afraid to take this class but I had to because it's required for my degree. This professor made it so interesting and fun and "easy". There are two tests but he gives you a test a week BEFORE the exam! Awesome right ;- ) and it's all about writing essays but it's easy.
When he lectures, you have to write down basically everything he says. It can be overwhelming. Does give a lot of extra credit opportunities. I wouldnt recommend to take this class unless your really interested in this history.
Such a chill class, make sure to take lots of notes. I ended up with over 100% in the class, and I'm a science major. It was very fun, and I love the teacher, he's so funny. I'd recommend him and I would love to take another class of his in the future if I have to(I hate history).
He makes history fun! Makes jokes and keeps the class engaged you will end up participating without knowing. Only con is that he gives essays to write for exams which sucks!
He talks way too much, i get its a lecture but he tells way too many unnecessary stories that end up confusing you. All of his exams where essays which is annoying because his notes/lectures are not very helpful. also he made us write a research paper that would've been easy but we could only use nova database which wasn't helpful.
Mr. Howes is one of the best History Professors I've had. He does talk a lot, but the lectures are fantastic to listen to. Exams are only essays, and they are all based of the classroom lectures, so make sure you take notes. When he gives his practice test (which is the same as the actual test), write a practice essay on the topic. Also easy hw
Howes was the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are a lot, but he will repeat something if you ask. He makes the material very easy to remember, and I found myself going home and telling my parents about what we learned about and his anecdotes. Definitely take him if you need a history credit!!!
He's so funny and nice. He actually cares about his students and will help you outside the class. I always laugh in his class and the tests are so easy! Literally straight off the review. He is good at explaining things but has kinda bad notes. You can always audio record or take all the notes you can in class. TAKE HIM!
Fantastic professor. Really knows his stuff and provides clear and attainable objectives for every lecture which will prepare you adequately for his exams. I strongly recommend taking his classes- he's one of the good ones
Excellent professor! Can't wait to take him again!! Hilarious, vulgar, but respectful! Give random online tests as extra credit and little homework. There's 2 exams, including the final, and a huge essay to turn in in three separate parts. You must participate, ask and answer questions, along with turn things in on time. Won't regret taking him!
He is HILARIOUS. I had him at 8am and I was never dreading class because of how excited I was to hear his lectures. We only had 1 exam and the final was open book, like how can you complain. Do the basic duties as a student, show up, take notes, then you're good. Easy A, if you want to have a awesome professor, TAKE HIM. Also a lot extra credit!!!
He is one of the best history professors! I'm sad I only took him online and not in person. His recorded lectures were hilarious and made ancient asian history come alive. There are a couple papers but not many and simple to do. Honestly he really should do podcasts, he's great! There were no exams or quizzes, just papers. All are online.
One of the best classes I've taken. I took his 8-week class. Just show up and make sure to take lots of notes. Only 2 tests and one quiz, both are online and open book (reason why you should take a lot of notes) . One essay less than 2 pages, super easy. Definitely recommend. He's a great professor!
10/10 would take again. He's easy-going and teaches in a very logical, easy-to-follow way. Show up, make an honest effort, and you'll do well. Others complain that he talks about his family a lot. Yes, he does. But watch carefully. He is very, *very* good at using "tangents" to provide mnemonics or reengage a class that is spacing out. No phones.
Prof Howes us a solid for choice for those who want to come to class and listen/take heavy notes. The notes will help you on the test. He literally gives you an outline for the exam and you just have to prepare. 2 exams and 1 essay. No real homework except the essay! His lectures are fun cause he tells them as if hes telling a story!
I ended up dropping his class! He only talked about his family. Did I learn anything about history? NO! Maybe a yes to his family history... He's a great professor but just not for me. Also, I didn't find his slides useful for the tests and quizzes.
Professor Howes is a phenomenal teacher. He is a fantastic storyteller and loves history. Lectures are long but interesting. Be warned, to succeed, you must take extensive notes. Tests and quizzes are heavily lecture, not textbook, based. He's a generous essay grader. Do not be on your phone-he will take points off your grade.
He was my favorite professor spring semester! His lectures were long but they were always interesting, he's very passionate about history. He did talk about his family but I didn't mind it. Beware, take very detailed notes during lectures, I recommend going over the slides and writing everything down before class and take lecture notes. Got an A!
An 8-week Summer course with Prof Howes left me underwhelmed. His lectures don't flow and I often have to read ahead to understand the content. And he's always using analogies are often irrelevant to the subject. Without reading the textbook, I'd be completely lost in his class. Sometimes the information he teaches isn't even in the book.....
He is an amazing professor. I took him for history 101 and 102. I took his 8 week class. There are two exams which were taken at home. They were essay questions which are the exact same as the notes he gave. He gives online quizzes but those are super easy. His lectures tend to be funny, but there is a lot of note taking.
I've been Professor Howes classes for over 4 semester now and he is absolutely fantastic. Lectures are long but interesting and he's very good at keeping students engaged with stories and jokes. He's a generous grader and understanding of students. The most important thing is to take detailed notes because exams are lecture based.
Entertaining teacher with engaging lectures, would tell anecdotes to keep students awake during class. On the first class he said we would need a PHYSICAL copy of the textbook, he put emphasis on physical, but we never ended up using the book in class. Kinda made me waste 30 bucks. Overall though, a good teacher that I wouldn't mind having again.
Professor Howes is a gem. Though he jokingly bullied me the entire semester he was very easy going and lenient. You show up and take extremely good notes you will pass. Just make sure to take exceptional notes or you wont do so well on exams.
He is a generous teacher, He is a good storytell and his lectures are very useful, make sure to take notes with details and you will pass his class. I highly recommad him!!!
Great professor you should not fail his class there are tons of extra credit opportunities.
He is the best professor, you need to do essays for exams but believe me he is the best when it comes to teaching history. I learned a lot with him, also he is really really funny and makes lectures way better.
I would STRONGLY recommend taking any of Mr. Howes' classes. I read parts of the textbook initially, but it's not needed for the entire class. If you show up, participate, and take notes, you should do fine. There are plenty of opportunities for extra credit. Prepare for a lot of writing on exams. The lectures are memorable and hilarious!
Best professor I could have taken. Honestly, I wish more professors acted like him. Great class! Just show up, and youll pass, the class is enjoyable.
The best professor I've had for college so far. Gives clear and helpful lectures and gives you clearly the material for exams. Easy to get an A if you do your part and study. Also extremely nice, understanding and caring especially through pandemic.
This is the best professor ever!! Extra credit opportunities, light work load, lots of clear notes and fun, chill professor! I would definitely retake this class, taking this class is fun and an easy A, you will learn a lot! Only the luckiest students get to be his student.
Super easy class. If you take notes, YOU WILL PASS. Don't even read the textbook, its never used. In fact, he said the test answers cannot be based on the book, but his notes. His lectures are funny, but annoying as heck. He talks about his family way more than he should. We would cover a lot more material if he didn't ask weird questions as well.
Professor Howes is a good professor. He is understanding of the students needs and makes the class enjoyable. Took his 8-week course and it was super easy. He doesn't give lots of assignments/hw. There are 2 exams for the semester. Easy-going professor that is fun & one that you can get along with.
I took him for a night class in 2015 at Germanna. I really enjoyed his class. My only complainant is he gave extra credit in return for a positive review on here. However, he shouldn't need to bribe his students because of how enjoyable his class is. I've long graduated now but if the class was offered again at GCC I would take him for fun.
Responds quick to emails. Tests based specifically on lecture notes. Never used textbook. Extra credit opportunities on tests. Loves participation, wrong answers welcomed. Very funny. Lots of stories. Professor is a hidden gem, passionate about History. Makes time for questions after class. Cares about his students. All around cool Professor.
Prof Howes has got to be the best instructor I've ever had. His lectures are always entertaining and engaging. Makes you gain passion for history. Tests are based on lectures so you just need to be attentive. I ended up getting over 100% in most of my assignments from extra credit. If you care about your grades, so will he.
Took online. So funny, tells lots of stores to help remember material. Sometimes felt like off topic but it came together. Lots of extra credit. Writing exams, grades nicely. Not many assignments but ones given are not too bad.
Prof. Williams was great during the online pandemic! He was very understanding of the drastic change that we're all experiencing and has some great lectures! Definitely the only class I truly paid attention to, just make sure you write down his lecture notes!
Professor Howes is an average professor. He doesnt really give good informational lectures. Talks about off topic things too much and long lectures. I personally would not recommend or take this class again.
His class has extremely amount of work, and if you unable to keep up with them you will fail, and if you are taking a seven-week course you will fail if you miss one class. The professor seems be less instructive when explaining the assignments. I've tried many times try to email him to clarify the instructions, yet he gives huge amount of confusio
Fun lectures; his seemingly random stories all relate to the content he is teaching. It just helps you remember the events easier. Because his exams are based off of lecture, be sure to participate and take notesand you will pass. You will regret it when it comes to exam if you dont. Overall, enjoyable class; would take again!
Professor Howes is amazing at what he does! His way of teaching does make you develop your critical thinking skills. His lectures are great and will tell a couple of side stories. The exams are based on the information from his lectures. There's one term paper. Please attend all classes since participation is a big deal for this class. Good luck!
Professor Howes is very understanding and kind to students who are having a hard time during the pandemic. Attendance is mandatory and it's important to write down everything he says. Most assignments are long essays, so if you like to write take this class. But the good thing is that he isn't a tough grader. Loves to make jokes during lectures too
He honestly is such a great professor! He's hilarious and knows how to make lectures fun. Most classes will just be lectures of him talking but they're not boring if you actually listen and take notes. He does go pretty fast but as long as you tell him to slow down he doesn't mind. I highly recommend him! Plus he doesn't make the textbook mandatory
The best professor ever. His tests are so easy just make sure to take notes because they are lecture-based. Open note tests and quizzes. Easy A as long as you TAKE NOTES! His lectures are easy to keep up with because they are very interesting. I learned so much in this class.
Professor Howes is funny. He is a good Professor although his exams are very long and are only lecture-based. But any student who has notes on the lecture will get an A for this class. Overall I recommend him. Pretty chill person.
Professor Howes would often tell many stories during class some of which were goofy and others that put me to sleep. I appreciate how he handled the online class situation, however I was not very fond of the exams being in the form of papers totaling 7-8 pages in length.
I love the energy that Professor Howes gives off when he teaches. I cannot stand history but he made this class so interesting. He tells history as if he was telling a saucy story. Every class was interesting and I never got bored. He is a fair grader and I learned so much from him. Take him! You won't regret it.
I usually don't like history, but this prof made it a lot more interesting. It is very lecture heavy and only relays the info orally. Teaches by asking a lot of questions, and will call on students directly. Overall, pretty good but does make some questionable jokes.
Professor William Howes has an interesting way of lecturing, there are 3 exams in the class that are worth a hundred point (these are written exams) they're not hard as long as you study the review sheet he provides. There is also a final paper, but you're able to start on this at the beginning of the semester. Overall, he is super cool.
I took his 7-week class and it was honestly a breeze. I had a great time listening to his lectures, and the work he gave us was pretty easy if you take notes and listen to his lectures. Sometimes he would provide us audio lectures on PPTXs and then we would take a quiz. There's a paper due at the end of the course, nothing crazy.
I never was a fan of history but somehow someway this professor actually made me pay attention and be interested in learning more! Definitely enjoyed taking this class and wish we had more professors like this
I have taken Professor Howes twice and I am extremely satisfied. I had him for HIS111 & HIS112. His way of teaching is very unique. He tells lots of stories, you may think he's going off track but he always manages to relate it to what you're learning. Go to class and take good notes and you're chilling. Best Professor ever!!!!
Best professor ever. Professor Howes would make history fun while lecturing us about the topic. As long as you do his work, which is not a lot and study for his exam then you will do amazing.
A really great professor. I find it difficult to pay attention during online classes, yet he was able to hold my attention and keep me interested. He's a professor with a great sense of humor and personality who knows how to keep class engaging and interesting. Highly recommend.
This professor makes me love history, super interesting and engaging. He gives study guides for exams and has review days. There's no pop quizzes or assignments everything is on the syllabus. It's an easy and fun class.
He was truly my favorite professor this fall semester, his lectures were incredibly interesting and indulging and i am someone who doesn't like history generally! His exams were purely based on the lectures he gave where we were expected to take notes while he talked about the topics and went through the powerpoints. He told stories, he da best!
Overall, he is a fantastic professor. His class consisted of 2 exams and 1 paper. Attendance in class will be extremely important as all the lectures are important and the better notes you have the better you will perform in the exam. He has a great sense of humor, so his class is pretty enjoyable. Lots of extra credits possible.
Bill the Hammer Howes knows so much history off the top of his head its crazy. He offers a lot of extra credit and enjoys making students participate. he liked to talk about his kids because he's proud of them so be sure to ask about Robbie.
he is a rambler so be good at taking notes fast. doesn't use powerpoint much so it was hard to keep up at times. class was on zoom but he doesn't record lectures and post them so make sure to not skip class. exams are all essay based. one research paper due at the end of class.
Great Professor. Take him and you will not regret.
Hes a good teacher but honeslty talks about random stuff and he does not provide detailed instructions and does not record his lectures so you need to be in class, and your camera needs to be on. another thing is he will rnadomly pick on you to answer questions
I had Prof. Howes for Fall 2023, He is an amazing teacher. Be prepared to take a lot of notes, this class is all about notes, he talks fast so you better jot down information fast. He's also hilarious, his lectures consists of notes, stories, jokes, examples, etc. His teaching style was very effective and entertaining. DONT SKIP and STUDY !!!
GO TO LECTURE. Super easy class even for a student like me but while participation is EC, he doesnt use textbooks which means you need lecture notes for the exams. He doesn't allow outside info for your work, just lecture material so you need the PPTs to make your notes. Final research paper is easy too. BTW Grammarly isnt allowed! (counts as AI)
The 5-star rating and hundreds of amazing reviews don't do this professor justice! Take him for yourself to see just how remarkable he truly is! Exams are all lecture-based, but they're all written exams. He's a generous grader and doesn't give much work. I highly recommend him and found his class to be very enjoyable. Best professor I've ever had!
Best professor I have ever had, I have never been a school person but I genuinely enjoyed going to his class.
Prof Howes makes history incredibly interesting by connecting it to funny stories, making jokes, and asking open ended questions, so his lectures are super entertaining. As long as you take good detailed notes and study, you'll do just fine in his class.
He is one of the best history professors I've had. I always looked forward to attending his class, he's hilarious and always make his lectures fun. Pro tip: Always ask about Emma and Robbie!
He is a nice teacher and helpful. He is not picky on assignments or test which you can get a good grade on. There is 2 exams and one paper for this class. The exams are a lot of writing like writing 10+ paragraphs. The quizzes and assignments are easy and you must pay attention to his lectures and take really good notes. He hands out extra credit.
You'll pass with flying colors if you participate in class (graded), listen to his lectures, TAKE GOOD NOTES. His exams are writing intensive, there's two, based off his lectures only, no textbook. He doesn't record meetings, I suggest using voice memos. A few recorded lectures for homework and extra credit opportunity. He's very cool and funny.
Professor Howes is quite easily one of the best professors at NoVa. He's extremely funny and a little random at times. His lectures are always entertaining, but be ready to take a ton of notes. There's only 2 exams and 1 paper, but both exams are hand written. He does give extra credit on both exams though which is always helpful
I'm not bored in class but however he does not allow phones while teaching he will call you out for it. Also, If you don't record his lectures you will fail if you don't listen to anyones advice at least listen to mines after the first exam a lot of people dropped his class he requires all resources for exams to come for his lectures word for word
The most hilarious professor I have ever had which makes staying awake in class super easy he seems like a tough guy at first but don't get intimidated he is amazing and offers extra credit. My biggest piece of advice though is DO NOT skip class as he only tests on what comes out of his mouth TAKE NOTES other than that this class is super easy.
Mr. Howes is easily the most unique professor I've had. He is really funny and is very out of pocket some of the time. If you are ready to be called out in class and/or have a good time, he is your professor. Make sure to take good notes, since the 2 tests are all writing. He has some online PP material that can be up to 2 hours.
You MUST attend every class because his quizzes and exams are only based on his lecture. Dont bother using any sources online because he will know. You HAVE to take notes on literally everything he says. He always offers extra credit which gives you an extra boost in your grade. I never liked history but he was worth the course. Highly recommended!
The professor is fantastic, in my opinion. However, a friend sitting beside me did not like him, so he was not for everyone. I suppose you must be into history to like this class; his lectures are fun. The exams are essays you must write, like 6-8 pages worth of things (2) exams, which are closed notes that you must memorize.
This class is incredibly easy if you just take notes and listen to the lectures. Learn to multi-task taking notes while participating. It's worth it because he has unique & interesting insights into History. I learned the most from him than any other HIS class before. I found him to be engaging, responsive, and fun. Just take notes!!!
Professor Howes was a great teacher. He made his lectures fun and interesting. He is a very fair grader, and will give you many extra credit opportunities throughout the course. This was my first class taken at NOVA, and he was a great professor. I feel like I learned a lot in this class.
Professor Howes was by far the best teacher I have had at NOVA. He keeps you entertained in lectures which helped me so much with memorizing the material. His assignments are very organized and you are given all of the info needed for the exams. The study guide is a direct layout of the exam, which makes it 100x easier. Favorite class ever!
I really enjoyed this class, Mr.Howes is super funny and good at story telling. He is big on cameras and participation. He will call u out for an answer. All his notes are given verbally during lecture. You have to attend and be present to get your notes. He will post blank slides so they're no help. I recommend recording lectures for your notes.
Prof Howes brings history to life with his unique teaching style - funny stories, engaging discussions, and a no-phones policy that keeps the class focused. Detailed note-taking and using unstuckstudy for study prep are key to doing well on his essay exams.
I realized 90% through the semester that I had already completed this credit in high school but wasn't even mad. Prof. Howes is hilarious, informative, and kind. He gives great lectures every class with engaging content and if you speak to him after class he is very kind. While he may joke a little hard sometimes, its endearing.
Great guy, extended deadlines, accepted late work, kindest man ever. Really wish I wasn't as shy to laugh at his great jokes. Amazing guy, easy A due to all the extra credit work. The exam were pretty surprising at first with an hour and 25 minutes for about 16 paragraphs, but as long as you strategize about it, you should be able to pass.
If are going to use AI. Use it wisely. It is a tool for us. I don't know why I have to say this but don't just copy and paste. Word it yourself. That is how I learn. Using AI to reading and write using my own words. I remember and understand the material after completing any writing assignment. Easy class.
I have always struggled with history and never gotten any grade above a C but Professor Howes makes it fun and engaging. Highly suggest coming to class cause he doesn't post the PowerPoints discussed in class, but if you have someone to give you notes missing a couple classes won't kill you. (I was sick for 2 classes and still got an A on the exam)
he's very funny and it's easy to stay engaged in class bc he makes it fun and tells stories. i really enjoyed his class and would definitely take another one of his classes. go to class and take good notes!!!! and also he has a lot of options for extra credit. definitely take his class
Howes is the best! He is extremely funny and engaging, and he made the whole class genuinely enjoy learning about history. Main advice: TAKE GOOD NOTES. Record the audio from in-class lectures and go back and transcribe them for the exams, and you will be golden, as he lets you use notes to pre-write exams. I would def do another class with him!
Tons of opportunities for extra credit on every single quiz and exam. The lectures are entertaining, but tough to take notes on. Feedback on essays and tests is helpful but not super clear, and there is no specific criteria that equates to a specific grade. He is willing to adjust grades though if you reach out to him between classes..
The BEST professor I've ever taken. He gives lots of opportunities for extra credit and his class is fairly easy. The exams are written but he gives all the possible prompts you can have. He is very funny and if you pay attention you'll pass with flying colors!
It's my third week in his class. I'm loving it. As long as you participate and don't use phone between the lectures, you'll be good. He's funny. I'll update on the grade when I finish this class
I took his thirteen-week course. He was very easy on grading, and all the assignments were super easy. He also responds to emails very fast. The class ended a week ago and I would def take it again with him if I had to
He's a good professor and will bring real life scenarios into his teaching so it makes it easy although he will sometimes call on people randomly it isn't too bad. His classes are presentations so be prepared to take hella notes cuz it'll help you on the essays or exams. Pretty easy class tbh
Best class ever and best professor. His lectures are amazing. Even though he makes you participate, you will love this class. Lots of extra credit. This was one of my favorite classes, because the professor is really funny, understandable. Take good notes for the exams. Overall, this professor is the best. TAKE THIS CLASS
Mr. Howes is the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are amazing, funny, and you'll never get bored. Take good notes for the exams. Exams are essays only, but as long as you write the important things, you'll be okay. Take his class, and you're not gonna regret it. Best class ever.
One of my favorite professors of all time. Lectures are very enlightening, and I felt like it was story time. Although the exams are written and require long paragraph essays as answers, it was the first class I have ever tru;y learned. I still recall many historical stories from his course, even though I took the class a few years ago.
He was a very chill and nice teacher and lots of extra credit its pretty much impossible to fail unless you decide to not do the work which is very easy. He is a amazing teacher and i recommend everybody to take him.
An amazing professor!! He makes the class interesting by doing a lot of things. He makes it funny as well, he's very understanding as well. It is pretty much impossible to fail his class, as long as you do your assignments and write down important stuff from lectures you are good. If you fail the first test he gives extra credit and a lot! TAKE HIM
