Very good sense of humor. I liked your stories that you told as if they were new even though they're so OLD! It made them more hilarious. Did your overhead projector really burst into flames when you were giving yoru PhD dissertation? LOL

Very funny and entertaining... doesn't teach calc for the whole period. Tells students exactly what they need to know, but you need to keep up in class.

Funny guy and good teacher. Will definitly try to trick you on the exams, and test not only calculus but your knowledge of alegbra as well. Sometimes he goes to quick in lectures and skips important processes. Still good for a laugh :)

nice guy. keeps math fun with the jokes. he had a great TA who made all the difference in the world. she was the best person to have to help with homework/explaining concepts.not a bad class if you kept up with assignments. cared about students.

As long as you keep up with the homeworks and stuff, you'll be fine. He's awesome, so nice and soo funny. And for an 8:10 class, those tangents of his were very helpful in lightenin up the class. Highly recommended!

Total jerk!!! I had him once as a substitute. He was not funny at all. Well, ok maybe if you're of the ****, homophobic, ignorant mind-set. He was completely inappropriate and unprofessional. It only took 5 minutes for me to LOATHE him.

He is the worst teacher I have had and I am not even through with him yet. All he does is tell the same not funny jokes and stories over and over, many of which are innapropriate and offensive. You will get nothing out of the course with him!

One of the worst teachers I could have had. If I sign up for a class that's 80 minutes long, I don't expect the material to be covered well in less than 30 minutes. Too many jokes and stories that aren't funny and not enough calc to help me learn.

He is only helpful during office hours. If your the kind of student that needs a good lecture, do not take his class. Lectures are more like storytime; you aren't taught math! Besides that, he is friendly and down-to-earth. lots of homework

Very funny guy. Do your hw, and you'll be fine. Class was pretty easy, but exams got progressively harder. Got out of class early a lot which was nice. But he's a really nice guy who made a math class fun to go to.

He may make distasteful jokes, but it isnt his problem they bother you so much. Are you here to learn math or to stand up for your rights as whatever? If the stereotypes he enforces arent true then show him they arent. Excellent teacher.

Ok. So I've been a math person my whole life. I don't NEED calc for my major. For some reason, I WANTED to take that class. He was such a bad teacher that I (who received 'A's through HS) failed miserably.

a great overall teacher. one of the few classes i actually enjoy, and even better, i actually learn something in. his life stories are also very inspiring, for those who can appreciate them.

this class is boring & the way he teaches doesn't help. he rushes through the material talking to the board the entire time and doesn't explain. his personal anecdotes are funny but he repeats himself. overall a nice guy, but shouldn't be teaching math.

he's a really nice guy and has a lot of stories so class isn't that boring. but when actually teaching, he goes over the material very fast. but then again, numerical analysis is really easy so he could do that. tells you exactly what questions on exam beforehand, and grades fairly.

He teaches really fast and it's hard to follow unless you've done some previewing.He spends a lot of time telling stories that i wish were used on teaching. But he tells you everything that will be on exams. So go to class!

he teaches quickly but he's very clear and is always willing to help. make sure you go to class cuz he basically gives you every exam in class. also his workshops are a way to easily raise your grade. the only reason i got a B+ instead of an A was cuz i didnt go to the one review for the second exam

Funny guy! I regret not doing the hw until the last second otherwise I would've gotten an A in this class. Entertaining, yes. Do you learn, yes. Is he some genius, no (admits it too), but this is what I want from class. An actual real person, a guy who goes over topics, straight fwd. Recommended!

i had him for calc I and II, his final grades are very harsh. he explains his math pretty good and he's clear but that's about 20-30 mins each lecture, then he just stands there sayin lame jokes and talkin about his family. he said he was in the marine corps but that guy doesn't look like he ran one mile in his life. overall he's really boring.

I liked his lectures. the occasional entertainment is necessary during the 80-min class. Who the hell can survive a straight 80-min lecture? Nevertheless, I have to mention that his tests are kinda long but straight forward. There is no stupid quiz in his class and I liked that very much. do the h/w, u will be fine.

Great teacher. He keeps your attention with jokes that are usually funny. He is very clear in his teaching and very helpful if you don't understand the topic. If you're not good at calc, don't expect this guy to pull off any miracles. It's your own job to make sure you understand the material.

During lecture he covers the required material and with the extra time, he tells the same story. Warning - you may hear the same story numerous times. On a serious note, he is a great teacher, but those tests are hard.

Professor Irvine is a very down to earth guy who will entertain you with jokes and refer to his personal life for comic relief during his lectures. My only complaint is that he moves a bit too fast during the lectures and doesnt give you adequate time to come up with a question before he says "on to the next section"

Professor Irvine is suchhhhh a sweet man.. He loves telling stories and its a fun class to sit through.. gives multiple choice/true flase tests but is a flexible grader.. take him!!!!!

Bill Irvine is a piece of work. For one, he writes all over the board and skips steps along the way so hes very tough to follow. I would say he's a great human being, but needs improvement as a professor even after 40 some odd years. I didn't go to office hours with him, but I heard he was actually good there...so maybe there's hope.

He's really hard but he will teach you Calculus. In office hours, he's pretty helpful. However, if you aren't good at math, he doesn't have a magic bullet. Do the homework and take notes and you will do fine on his exams.

he is the cutest old man i've ever had as a teacher! he's nice and cares about his students .. i highly recommend him as a professor because he is always eager to teach. he engages his students with jokes and by approaching problems from different angles. for example, he helped explain shell volume methods by referring to the egyptain pyramids

i don't know what you people are talking about. irvine made calc 2 more of a pain in the ass than it had to be. personally, i'm not waisting my parents' hard earned money to listen to his stories while he barely teaches. if u have him, do the recitation work!!! it will save ur ass.

Professor Irvine is a very nice old man! definitely keep him if you have him!! I had him for Calc II and he is extremely helpful in class and office hour!! Do the hw and you will be fine for the exams!!

His funny stories and jokes made waking up for a 9:15 Douglass class acceptable. He goes over the material well and tells you the types of questions that will be on his test. Even if you just go to lecture, read the book and do some sample problems and you should be fine. He's a good teacher and makes the course enjoyable with his stories

I don't know, I wasn't overly impressed with his teaching. He was OK, but he made some things a little more difficult then need be. He's not bad, but don't expect an easy A. Ohh and be prepared to listen to the story about how he met Chuck Yeager at least 4 or 5 times.

If there is one Math professor you want to walk through the doors on the first day of class at RU, it's Bill Irvine. Everyone else either can't speak english, can't teach, or a nice little combo at both. Not that Calc3 is easy by any means, but Irvine is one of the best compared to any other foreigner. Hella better than Shtelen.

If you have him, you better pray that your TA is god (not a typo, your TA needs to be DIVINE to save you. Too bad my TA was mortal). Prof Irvine is a very very nice guy- but I signed up for calc, not Irvine's life story 101. Go for Dr. Z if you want to learn. I passed the course with Dr. Z's notes, and I'm not even in his class.

You should definitely use Dr. Z's handouts, as another user suggested. He's ok, talks a bit much but honestly the material is generally easier then that of Calc 2 so I didn't see much of an intrusion in that (though I can see how it could become one in other more rigorous courses). Try getting the section where Sarah is the TA, she is very helpful.

While Prof. Irvine is a good guy, he cannot teach. He spends half the class telling his life stories or jokes. It was such a waste of time that I stopped going to class after the first exam. The class material is not too difficult, as others have recommended, just use Dr. Z's handouts and you'll be fine.

Irvine is a good guy and very lenient. Calc 3 isn't easy but if you study you should pass. He gave 20 free points on the 1st exam, 20 extra credit on the 2nd exam, but none on the final, however, if your final grade is a 50 you will pass since his grading scale is very lenient. If you go to class go for his stories. you'll learn lots about life.

Best calc teacher I ever had. He is easy to understand, his tests are easy, he goes over them with you. he does talk about his life a lot and storied but some of them are intersting, and they are all more interesting than calc

all he does in class is tell jokes & talk about his life. however his exams are SOOO easy. he READS you the exam the class before .. so you know EXACTLY whats gonig to be on it (minus the #s) AND he lets you have a CHEAT SHEET during the exam. so all you have 2 do is write down step by step how to do each problem and fill in the #s during the exam

if u can take this class with a diff prof please do so. he is very unfair and there is no reasoning with him. he lost all our hw assignments & has no grades for them now. if youre signing up to take math youre in the wrong class because all he talks abt is history and politics. nice guy but this class is a waste of time.

He was so nice, I had already taken Calc in high school, however he build a good foundation for calc 2 and the only reason I got a B+ is because I didnt study for the final. He speaks so clearly and is very down to earth, has some corny jokes too. If you need to take Calc, i HIGHLY recommend him.

This professor is horrible and DOES NOT teach! He tells life stories about his army days and his children for at least 50 minutes a lecture! He does example problems from the book. If you want to learn Calc don't take this class, else there's no point going to class.

The constant life stories are pretty annoying if you don't know anything about math but if you are able to teach yourself via the book and deal with the stories everyday, you'd probably do OK. He flat out said that his exams are just used to test competency so you'd probably do OK self-teaching and sucking up to unfunny stories.

Extremely funny guy, spends a lot of his time telling stories, and most of the rest of the time doing example problems, in addition to letting us out of class 20 minutes early. Exams are pretty tough, because he doesnt really follow the book well. Pay attention in lecture, it's comparatively short, and take notes. grading is fairly lenient.

Hilarious! He is one of the reasons why old people are so awesome. He is a hypermasculine army veteran who always brags about how he doesn't have a math degree but is highly qualified with his meteorology degree. He was one of my favorite teachers ever, especially for math which is such a dry subject. He makes the course fun with enough learning.

Bill Irvine was the greatest professor I had in my first semester here at Rutgers. His tests are quite hard, but a little extra motivation to study never hurt anyone. His stories about his days in the Air Force are interesting and funny, and his examples he does in class are both broad and simple. Highly recommended.

Very knowledgeable professor. He definitely gives a no-nonsense approach to calc II. He does go off tangent, and sometimes for quite a while, but he does cover all the material in the curriculum and is EXTREMELY helpful when you visit him during office hours.

Very helpful course. Makes learning very fun. Classes area always let out early. Stories told are very entertaining. Time management is amazing as he gets his stories in and all the material of the course as well. Definetely a course you would want to take before leaving Rutgers. Bill Irvine is the man!

i really enjoyed this class. he goes over the same exact problems in the book. he spends a lot of time telling funny stories, but still manages to complete all the material in each lecture. kept me awake at 9:15 in the morning! never visited his office hours because he told us exactly what to study for the midterms, which were not bad at all.

This class was amazing. Lectures were a pleasure to attend. Mixes the perfect blend of stories and the material. I was very well prepared for the exams and he taught us exactly what we needed to know. When came the final not made by him, I'm confident Irvine's section (Honors) did exceedingly better then the other sections. A class you must take.

Irvine's a quality teacher. He teaches the material efficiently and effectively, and he makes classes interesting by taking breaks to tell stories and jokes. He also applies mat hto real-world situations, a rarity among teachers I've had. Finally, his exams are very straightforward - no curveballs. He's a good guy, and I'd take him again anyday.

Bill Irvine is an absolute boss!! If you want an easy professor then take this guy. His exams are extremely straightforward and his lectures always end early. As long as you do most of the homework there is no reason why you cannot be successful in this man's class. He also tells incredibly funny jokes to keep you entertained.

He doesn't teach in the class, tells personal stories and wastes the time. If you want to learn something take another professor. He also doesn't know most of the concepts and programming involved since he is not a mathematician.

William did not use email, Powerpoints, or Sakai effectively as a professor making it very difficult to stay on top of assignments that were due at different points throughout the week. Most of the class read the book during his lectures instead of listening because he would often go on tangents and had unorganized hand writing. Nice man though.

Bill is honestly a great guy and teacher, he's getting old so some things are no up to par with him essentially. He's highly knowledgeable in his field, even in calc 1 alone. He adds some humor every class so the lectures are great and he tells stories a lot too. His exams are a little easy and that 's bad for the final but he prepares you for it.

This is is by far the worst professor I've had for math. He has horrible teaching skills, all he does is recopy the pages from the book, the only reason I was able to understand was by reading the book myself and looking for external help. He doesn't care for his students, one bit. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE. He assumes everyone has a calculus background.

So long as you do the recommended work for understanding, do the required WebAssign homeworks, submit the required recitation work, and study for the exams, there's no question you'll do fine. Professor Irvine is an alright lecturer who FREQUENTLY tells stories and lets class out early (up to 45 minutes early or so). No attendance taken ever.

Makes a lot of old/math related jokes. Is an alright professor, but I did feel bad for those without a background in calculus. Calc is not a subject that is easy to teach in a lecture hall. Tests are standard calc dept. tests so study the previous years tests. Also keep up with the homework from the textbook. Attendance not mandatory.

William Irvine is funny but his lectures are just not helpful. For half of the semester he wouldn't even do problems in class he'd just put them on the projector and point at them. The majority of my classmates skipped class because they were basically learning the material from the book anyway. If you're sharp, class can help, otherwise skip it.
