he is fun, but too much info
Think Kramer but with a knowledge of history. Excellent prof!
Super Prof! Very entertaining, what every prof. should teach like.
Hilarious guy, he makes history fun and exciting.
Way better than Kenyan-Forrester.
Kramer mixed with Einstein : )

BEST prof ever - AMAZING lecturer
Best Prof ever, period
Make sure to turn off your cell phone or face the consequences. Great for Lectures... Watch out in 3000 & 4000 level courses, a very hard marker.
Really interesting lectures, but strict.
INCREDIBLE lecturer... fun, funny, entertaining, AND informative!!! Best prof ever!
He was AMAZING! His stories were great, and he inspired the class. He was disorganized @ time, but nothing too serious. I would love to take another class with him. He was brilliant, and made me want to learn. Excellent professor!
Funny, entertaining, and to the point.
Great prof!
Difficult marker, but willing to help if you need it. Scatter-brained lectures that would leave you confused in the end, but somehow manages to get in many points. Calls randomly on people in tutr and can be condescending if you don't know material,BEWARE
Very interesting lectures. Really funny. Didn't have him in Tutorial so i dont know how strict he is
My best prof in 4 years as undergrad. Very interesting, knowlegeable and involving. I hated missing lectures - because they were interesting (that's the biggest compliment that I can pay him). Would love to have him again. An asset to the school.
Great course that is only meant for people who are really interested in the subject. If you aren't interested then the assignments and readings will kill you. I loved his lectures.
hard work, but the lectures are worth it
This guy is jokes. The way he says words i.e. rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrussia. Doesn't know middle east very well, but he is jokes. He got tearry eyed at the end of the term and recieved a standing ovation from a class of 500.
Very good class. his lectures are very interesting and not boring (except for the decolonizatons). some t.a. are hard markers and will make you work. it is very worth it to take this class. Don't ****this guy off, it won't be pretty.
A great course. This is a must for any student wanting to study history. A great professor. Very funny, intelligent, and clear speaker. Just don't bring your cell phone to class! You don't want to ****this guy off, trust me.
absolutely INCREDIBLE professor. William Irvine is an asset to York. this is a VERY interesting class, but work is graded a bit difficult. Nevertheless, it's all worth it in order to hear Irvine's lectures. Brilliant and really funny too. TAKE THE CLASS!!
Amazing lecturer lecturing on a very interesting topic. Makes a great combination. If you have the opportunity run, don't walk, to the lecture schedule and TAKE HIS COURSE! His lectures are enough to get by on, though the readings are interesting too.
Irvine was a great lecturer, every passionate. The course work however was too hard for first yr. and it was marked way tooooo hard. I usually get A's B's but i had to settle for a C+ after giving it my all.
Lectures are neat. But it all depends on the TA. He doesn't give out the exam questions so if you want my advice, go to the student centre and pick up some past exams and look for themes. Guarantee they'll be on.
Irvine made that class unbelievable! His stories were a riot, and he always had a outline for students in the lecture. He made the material interesting and fresh. IF HE IS TEACHING, TAKE THIS CLASS! IT IS WORTH THE $. If Kanya-Forrester is teaching, RUN!!
Difficult course, but great to break you in to the future history experience. Interesting material and great lecturer...however, I found that he only had limited knowledge on the iddle east conflict. The TA's kinda sucked. Rrrrrrrrussian. lol
A prof who will actually listen to his student's wants, and changes his cirriculum based on what they want, which is what makes his course great. Knowledgeable about many things, not just one or two.
Hilarious. Knows what he's talking about, though as everyone before me has said, tends to go over it a bit fast. But in his defense, he posts up the outline of his lecture, so as long as you listen and study, you're fine :) Great prof :)
This guy is great. So funny and clear so what if he cares about cell phones he is great.
This is one of the coolest professors at York. He makes class so much fun and having him makes class a little more exciting! He's funny at watch.
Even when his mic quits, he can address an audience of 510 and keep our attention. Good Prof.
best first year course period, good material, great humor, enjoy.
outstanding professor...his lectures are organized, interesting, humourous and he actually makes it entertaining to sit in class. the course material is really interesting- the class is challenging and a lot of work- but it's worth it!
Sweet Jesus, can this guy talk! It's a lot, but it's all interesting, all relevant, and always enjoyable. TAKE THIS COURSE (but be prepared to read read read). My friend thinks his eyebrows are sexy, so I labelled him hot.
Made all the lectures interesting and fun. He makes clear the things he feels are important and is a funny man. There are many assighnments and a lot to read so be prepared. Really amazing prof.

This course challenges you to think like a historian, which is helpful for students' future in history at York. Excellent lecturer and sexy eyebrows. Hands down the most fun i've had in lecture during my first year. Challening papers (well, 2 of the 5) but well worth the stress.
He sounds like Mr. Scorpio from "The Simpsons" so what's not to like?
cool guy. talks alot. funny. tall BUT gives too much to read. it's cool though cuz thats what university's for.. aha..
Man this guy is awesome, just imagine if he was on speed what he'd be like. I think all his source of his energy is from his multi-flavoured Gatorade.
excellent and very funny. take this course you will learn a lot and its very interesting
He makes boring history entertaining to listen to. as long as u dont leave ur cell phone on in class.
good lectures, but when I had a problem in the course he was hard to contact. Never supplied office hours or even an email address.
Irvine was a really great prof. He was so energetic and kept the class on their toes! The class is work intensive, but most of the readings are interesting.
Prof was okay but course sucked! It is not what the description said. All you learn is what historians thought of the historical events, not the events themselves. Too much work for a first year course. Long, boring readings, and too many assignments. I thought I liked history, but this class ruined it for me. I would not recommend it!
This course was ok, would've been better if i didnt have such an a**hole for a TA. anyways, Irvine is a cool guy, talks reallly loudly. the course load was way too much for a 1st yr course-- 5 essays and a sh*tload to read.
rrrrRRRrrridiculous course load if your not majoring in history like me. Other then that he is a great teacher, one of a kind really.
Haha, Irvine is the greatest. It's a shame that teh lectures on the Middle-East weren't at all that good, Irvine is so funny. RRRRRRRRRRussian RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRevolution. haha. Great eyebrows. Tough class for a first year but worth it.
The class was nothing like the course description said it was, but Irvine made the lecture/class enjoyable. To bad he couldn't of lectured on the Middle East, he would have done a better job on it then KF. Class had a lot of WORK and heavy readings every week but if you kept ontop of them you'll be okay. Just remember to keep your cell phones OFF!!
Very engaging and funny professor. I went to the lectures just to hear him roll his "r's".
he was hard
Awesome prof. He was present for a lot of the history that he teaches, so he has a personal connexion with the material. He really gets into the class, on the last day he cried. If you need to pick up an extra credit take one of his classes.
TOOO much READINGS and TOOO many ESSAYS! Irvine talks too fast and it makes it really hard to take notes but he knows his stuff so tape his lectures because by the time you write down one point....he's already on his fifth.
Excellent course! Irvine is a great prof and the course was overall very interesting. There is a lot of readings and essays but if you stay on top of it and attend tutorial you'll be fine. Definately worth taking especially if your interested in 20th century history
tough course, lots of readings but he was an anazing prof. he was so engaged in the material he made it interesting. rrrrrrock on irvine!
Love Irvine! hes really enthousiastic about his lectures, but ill agee with everyone that is a lot of reading! very hard to keep up with! in fact im behind right now
AND THE AWARD FOR THE BEST EYEBROWS OF ANY PROF AT YORK U GOES TO........
IRVINE HAD EXCELLENT LECTURES WHICH WERE VERY INFORMATIVE AND OFTEN HELPED BY GIVING CLEAR NOTES WHICH WERE EASY TO KEEP UP WITH WITH A LAPTOP. THE ONLY THING IRVINE NEEDS TO LEARN IS PROPER STRESSING OF THE LETTER "R". I THINK DOGS HOLD IT FOR A SHORTER PERIOD OF TIME.
He's GRRRRREAT, other then the Tony the Tiger complex hes awesome. He is very clear, well organized, his stimulating lectures are among the best i've see anywhere. Lots of reading, and hes a bit of a fast talker... all in all GRRREAT Prof!
makes history fun
This class is brutal! There are so many readings, and they're all important so its hard to keep up which makes it hard to understand what is going on!His lectures are very confusing. He just stands up there, reads and then walks out. Gotta give him props for the eyebrows tho! haha
He's a pretty good prof. overall. But at times he talks a little fast, and doesnt really stop and explain thigs very often. But i guess that's b/c we are supposed to know them already. Although he does let the class go 15 minutes early :) hehe.
this class is not as interesting but Irvine is really cool. He makes his main points real clear in his lectures. The T.A's aren't bad either.
First off, this course should be a 9 credit course instead of a 6, there are so many readings which you definitely have to read a couple times over, to fully understand, the course however is fairly good, covering the major wars of the 20th century, Irvine is an amazing lecturer, who definitely knows his stuff, he has a great sense of humour which
great, makes you interested
What a great prof! so entertaining! and the sexiest eyebrows ever! rrr! It's like he injects crack into his system prior to lecturing! I love this guy
Irvine is great. The lectures are interesting although there are A LOT of readings. Overall it isn't hard to get a good mark.
Whatever you do, do not take this course. There are numerous readings and the workload is extremely heavy. If you like reading 50 pgs. per lecture be my guest. The prof. is ok. even though people make it seem like he is interesting, he is not.
most entertaining prof ever
I really enjoyed the class and the material covered. There were lots of readings, but you didn't necessarily have to do them to get a good grade. His lectures were very clear; use a laptop 'cuz he is indeed a fast talker and you wanna catch every word he says :)
DON'T LISTEN TO ANYONE THAT SAYS NOT TO TAKE THIS CLASS! Like Irvine told us on the first day of History 1010, "If you can make it through this class, you can pretty much make it through anything York University throws at you"! BEST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD!
Lectures are clear, but delivered at lightning speed. Be prepared. Can be quite funny at times.
Interesting lectures but talks super fast. A laptop would be a great investment for this class.
Your the best Professor I've ever had!
a very interesting prof, with a lot to say and not enough time to say it...so watch out when he goes into fast-forward mode. passionate about his work and quite funny most of the time. a great guy, but fast writing skills are a must!
A good prof. His lectures are very straightforward. They seem heavy on the information at first, but if you do the readings before the lectures you'll find yourself writing far less than if you didn't read. Seems to talk fast at first, but once you can sort necessary info from funny stories, it's not as bad.
While this professor may be currently on a type of stimulant (speed most likely), he is truly an amazing professor. His ability to capture a student's interest is unrivaled, and his passion for the discipline is truly unparalleled. Keep up the great work!
Forget what everyone has been said previously about this professor. For one, he speaks way to fast, second, he always makes noises while he speaks. Personally, I lost concentration becuase i would wonder why this prof. would make absurd noises for. However, this course is extremely informative and will allow you to have a better perspective since t
amazing!!!!!!funny as heelllllll best there is..one thing thats sucks.. he talks soo fast so u cant keep up..does not take time to breathe..but..best professor
Great Prof
I enjoyed his first year class (HIST1010) so much that I just had to take his third year one, and it was honestly well worth it! He is one of the best lecturer's around and funny as hell.
I THINK HES ONE ONE THE BEST PROFSS AT YORK..his lectures are really clear and althouh sometimes some of the history topics might be really boringg..he makes them interesting and theres only one exam and its straightforward...no stupidness on it and its pretty simplee!!
I adore Irvine. Great lectures. He can even manage to make economics, the history lover's snore topic, fun! (Well, at least not terribly and dry and snore worthy.) I took his thrid year class too. All I have left to say is: Rrrrrrrusian Rrrrrrevolution.
TOUGH CLASS, IRVINE KNOWS HIS STUFF
Such a dynamic teacher. You can really tell he's interested in what he's teaching. Very knowledgeable, and uses good examples to clarify. Talks at a relatively normal speed, not slowed down like many other professors. Very upfront about how this class will be challenging. Keeps class interesting with his enthusiasm. Keeps the class engaged.
One of the few professors who can keep the attention of the class throughout, partly due to the need to write down so much of what he says. Interacts well with the class, through humour and catering certain lectures to student interest, if time permits. Extremely knowledgeable, and lectures are well-organized. Talks fast, and expects you to keep up
Prof. Irvine is the best ever, I thoroughly enjoy every lecture, even the most boring topic is fun in his class. His dynamism also has considerable effect on you in lecture. Truly loves the material and is eager to talk with you before and after lecture, or even just around campus. In closing... TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONES!
Haha, hotness level - zero. Prof. Irvine was definatly one of my influences to continue my major in history. I agree with alot of what was already written... he keeps the attention focused during lecture, keeps a fast pace, speaks with alot of tone and inflection, and tries to make jokes here and there. I loved the way he pronounced 'R-r-russians'.
A great class and a unique lecturer. Irvine's class really changes the way you approach studies in history. It's a tough class, but worth the learning experience. Recommended if you are serious about history
Funny. Has a thorough knowledge and lectures with an inbiast opinion, especially on hot topics. I believe he's a pretty ideal professor.
Irvine was easily my favourite professor this year. The workload is not easy, but it's manageable if you put in the time. He's so funny, and seems very approachable. Doesn't seem to be arrogant like other professors I've seen. Exam was very fair and much easier than expected. Not a hard class if you're willing to put in the work, which most aren't.
Very interesting, "Can you hear me in the back? OK! And thank you again for turning off your cell phones! Today we will be talking about..." He goes pretty quickly but is easy to follow. Course is TOUGH for first year and it's to bad he isn't teaching it anymore.
The best prof I have had at York. His lecture are fast-paced so it is best to have a laptop for taking notes. He presents the material in an exciting, often humorous, way. Be prepared to work hard. There are lots of readings and essays. Still, if you keep you with everything, an A+ is possible.
He tends to rush his lectures, and it can be pretty hard keeping up. His style is rather theatrical, but he reads off his paper in front of him which sort of detracts from it. I LOVED him the one time he covered for our TA. Laid back and with no notes, he joked around, answered questions, and imparted lots of info. His lectures should be like that.
Awesome Prof! Speaks quickly in lecture but if you pay attention, the lectures are very informative. a lot of essays, but they are intended to improve your writing for your future university career.I would love to take another class taught by him.
He's a fantastic history prof who doesn't approaches his lecture with a bit of a sense of humour.
Very interesting lectures, never boring. But sometimes speaks too fast, and hard to keep up with notes.
One of the most arrogant professors I have ever had. Some of the most confusing lectures I have ever had was with him. Apathetic towards his students. He is now retired.
Prof was great! He was interesting and funny. The lectures went quickly. He spoke quickly so keeping us was important, but the class itself was fairly straightforward. Wish he wasn't retired now.
Great professor
