Professor James teaches at USC and previously taught at UCLA so he expects more from the students. Anyway hes funny and if your on his good side its cool. assigned 2 essays and for the final he makes you RE-DO the 2 essays. STAY ON HIS GOOD SIDE!!!

wow, hes a very difficult professor, but knows his stuff. his lectures are interesting, because he picks on his pupils. if you do not do your work, he will embarass you in front of the entire class. you WILL learn something in the class.

W/O a doubt the best professor on campus. A MUST FOR ALL ENGLISH MAJORS. If you cannot think outside the box or handle critical analisys stay out of his classroom. He is very smart. His lectures and constructs are the best I have seen/heard so far.

Dr. James is an outstanding teacher. He is well read and brings an understanding of the material that you probably wouldn't thought of. He pours out the soul of his heart through his lectures and is mesmerizing. Class work is easy, Take his Class!!! You won't be disappointed.

He's a great teacher, very smart and takes no B.S. This is a very hard class and Brit Lit is not my cup of tea, but he was such a great teacher, he made it worth my time. Don't take him if you think it will be easy - he wont like it and neither will you.

Best teacher I have ever had. Yes, he is egotistical but he has a reason to be because he is a highly intelligent person. If you want to get your money's worth, I highly reccomend him. If you are lazy and just want an easy class then don't. He is honest, funny, and does not take B.S.

Is hard to approch and he is often commenting on "being here for the money" and "other schools are better" but he really does mean well. No hwrk, tough on essays, but fair, if your a slacker, avoid!

agree with most of the comments, very annoying at times. he talks alot of history and other topics. he is easy to take just hard in grading. so if you are lazy and dont want to read i would not recommend him.

What can be said about Professor James without stamping the label of "world-class teacher" to his list of credits. Professor James puts a not-so-conventional spin on the class and lends credibility to the teaching profession overall. I highly recommend taking his class. We have very few chances in our lives to come across quality people like James.

Professor James may come across like an egotistical guy but you really do learn ALOT from him whether we like to admit it or not.YOu just have to work VERY HARD. I got an A and I really worked like crazy but he`s a fair guy.This is not the class for slackers though but when your in his class be prepared to learn and work hard.

He really gets into what the book is trying to tell you, but goes off on alot of tangents. he comes off harsh in class, but if you need to go to him 1 on 1 for help he really is pretty cool. Don't be afraid to ask for help!

ive only had him for a few weeks hes very intimidating on the first day but hes actually very nice and he really focuses on race so if your black you'll feel right at home if your another race youll feel awkward at times

Dr. James is a well-edcuated man who knows his craft. He's intimidating only to prepare you for what's really happening in well-known universities. Yes, he does go off on tangents, but brings it home. I had him for 4 English courses and this man rocks. He gives you life lessons as well as educated ones. For those of you who gave him a low rating, wait until you reach the University and you will see who really cares about how you feel. Been there, done that. Hats off to Dr. James. Need more like him.

Dr. James is a great professor, he is dedicated and only wants the best students in his class, he teaches at an University level, so the student gets the same level of teaching as students in UCLA ond USC. There are four in class essays (1hr to write the essay), term paper, and a final, alot of reading, but its worth it and it is very easy to keep

Professor James is the Bomb! He enjoys his job and he makes English class really interesting. You just have to do the few assignments to pass with a cool grade.

ok ima be real! i passed with a C, i learned ALOT!! , but this class was not easy! he grades hard, you have to pay attention all times, and he'll get u on blast if u hand in a bad paper, strict on tardies, might give u a 5 page essay if u r caught not knowing words 4rm da assignments. my advice, take him during the spring 2 do jus 2 papers!

Dr James is a one of a kind professors. Students that post negative comments are just bitter because they had to work for a grade. I received a B in the class when my first paper was a D. Get to know him he will help u 2 no end. u will truely be a better writer after taking this class. Dont take his comments to the heart. Very funny! luv him

He's a great teacher. Very hard grader so make sure you listen to his instructions. You will never ever get bored in his class but make sure you listen and pay attention to everything he says. He's very funny and try not to take things personally, he's the teacher and he knows his stuff. He only makes you write 2 essays, so he's worth taking.

I never got bored in his class. You will learn a lot from him and he actually sits down with you and explain what you can do better in your essays. If you want to really learn, take his class he's awesome!

This guy is the SHIAT! He is hard but you will LEARN and forces you to think outside the box and open up your horizons. We only did two papers but you better make those good. He is fairly flamboyant and narcissistic, but highly entertaining. HE IS VERY HELPFUL! Don't be afraid. He is one of the most intriguing people I have ever met.

Dr. James has a very strong sense of the world around him, reflecting upon his experience in life and his experience in literature. He's passionate about Lit., & wants each student to succeed. The important thing is to show up to class even after missing a few or many and to communicate. He loves attention and participation. I recommend him.

When I started the class, I was terrible at writing essays. In the midpoint of the semester, it just clicked. Everything just seemed more easier than it previously was. It will take hard work and dedication to become a better writer, but it will be worth it. So if you want to learn how to write college essays, take his class.

He seems like a hard professor at first but he's really helpful. Only two papers due throughout your semester. He is highly intelligent and really stimulates your mind. He has been one of the best teachers I've had so far!

You will remember this teacher for the rest of your life. He has horrible attendance so he doesn't expect your's to be any better. He only has you write two essays, and gives you the opportunity to re-write them to improve your grade. His lectures are brilliant. He is very funny and extremely interesting. Fantastic teacher. Is not easy. Grades 10x harder than any teacher at elco. But the amount of learning from the hard grading is so worth it. Seems strict and hard, but later in the course you acclimate to him. Only 2 papers but they have to be GREAT. Must take him if you REALLY love english and want to learn for it. Not a Joke class.

Dr. James is great! He makes sure you understand exactly what he's trying to relate. There are plenty of opportunities for questions and debate. He does go on tangents but it's worth it because he exposes you to new and exciting things. He's not an easy professor so you'd better work hard but all your other classes will seem like cake after him.

Professor James is opinionated and speaks his mind. However, his method of teaching is clear and organized. If you are willing to suck it up, this class will be all worth the while. Be polite, show respect, and go to class.

Extremely opinionated however his teaching style is effective and his grading style reflects the quality of work you put forth. This is a university transferable course and no "sliders" will pass. If you can work hard and take the punches, Dr. James will be a valuable asset to your education. Remember, you no good students, you heard it here first.

THIS MAN IS CRAZY!!!!!! he knows what he's talking about, but expects you to be up on his level. he jokes a lot and is really sincere if you've got issues but this is not a slide by class. you actually have to work...and you get 3 absenses to yourself for the semester

This man may seem crazy, but he definitely knows what he's talking about. He may appear strict, but he's offers help in and out of the classroom. As long as you do all the work, show up everyday, and pay attention in class, this teacher is great. Learn to appreciate his humor, which is directed at students, and which is almost always him joking.

When I took this class I thought this man was a complete a*hole, but he turned out to be one of my favorite professors! Yes, he is strict, but you learn. He had me do my research paper over and over again. Overall, I came out with one of the highest grades in the class and I haven't forgotten a thing he's taught me.

I really enjoyed this DOCTOR. I found his course informative and really helpful. He is very strict especially on attendance! If you really want to work hard to improve your writing skills, take this course. If you're looking for an easy A, this is not the course for you. I loved his attitude- it has an acquired taste! Took him for 1A,1C and English Lit. Was scared to death in the first class but realized quickly that he was the best, most interesting professor I would ever have. Agree with others,if you don't want to work and learn, don't take this class. If you want to learn how to really write a paper, take him. He is awesome!

This course should only be taken if one intends to actually learn. Not an easy grade at all, but it is well worth the effort. Could take an easier professor for 1C, but seeking this teacher again!

I'm not going to lie, this class is not for people that want an easy A or for people that get their feelings hurt easily. Dr. James is blunt and will put you on the spot, but he is FAIR and willing to help you if you make it apparent that you are driven. You will learn something new every day, sometimes related to English and sometimes irrelevant.

I remember my first day, I was gonna run out of there but something told me to stay and if he taught all subjects id take him time and time again... not for the light harted, anal or slackers but if you can take and dish out jokes as well as write a 7-8 page essay i hiiiighly recommend his class. sup mr. You WILL learn a lot from him. He is not easy but I worked VERY hard and got the grade I wanted. There are only 2 essays and barely any hw. He lectures most of the time and expects you to listen. Don't slack off! He will catch you and talk smack about you for the entire class period. He is a very intelligent man and I'm very glad i stayed.

Dr. James is NOT the professor for those who are lazy. Yes, you have to work hard for a passing grade, but you WILL learn a lot inside and outside the English subject and you WILL see improvements in your writing. Everyone has a different sense of humor, but I found Dr. James hilarious and could not stop laughing! Take him! Highly recommended :]

I was a bit freaked out when I first entered his class in winter session. I realized he is an unusual teacher in a good way. He is not fond of slackers, poor writers, or complainers. The class started with 30 but ended with 12 students. He cares a lot with helping out those who truly take the class seriously. His tough love method was very helpful.

I love Prof. James. He was very difficult and may appear extremely arrogant and strict but he is a very kind and understanding man. I learned a lot in his class and I believe his class has greatly improved my writing skills. Got an A in his class but it def didn't come easy.Definitely recommend him for those that are willing to work.

I took his section in the spring of 1986 for Literature. Now, 25 years later, I realize that I use skills he taught me daily. The most important of these skills is the self-editing of drafts. My 10 point essays on my CPA exam (1994) were more a testament to his rigorous instruction than to my expertise in the subject matter.

Everything he does is for good reason. He is extremely intimidating, but this is to weed out the slackers. No charity, it is up to you to get the grade. He is very well educated and can sometimes come off as a snob, but other times is hilarious. Pass his class and you will have learned something for life. It was challenging but I passed with an A.

Take this class! Come with thick skin, an open mind and the willingness to work hard. You will not regret it! This class will prepare you for a University transfer.

Great professor, he basically blows your mind in each class. Not for sensitive students, this professor exercises tough love- I got kicked out of class for not following the MLA format one day. That being said, his class is straightforward, and as long as you pay attention, you will do fine.

Take this English professor for english 1A and 1C if you can. One of the nicest, honest, funniest people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Will hold you accountable and he seriously wants his students to succeed. He acts like a hardass to weed out the losers but trust me you won't regret taking his class.

Very Difficult grader, I tried my very best and he grades as if you have no feelings. Harsh feedback. & Like others have stated, he is very self-righteous, conceited. He thinks less of CC students, always comparing his UC students to CC STUDENTS in a negative way. I received a B, only b/c he graded on a curve. I took his class 2011.

Looking back 2 years since I took the class, well worth it. You work for your A, and damn hard, but, you will emerge better in LIFE, English counts especially in the real world people! Believe me!

Tough professor. He will butcher up your papers. His lectures are amazing and it makes sense. He does give attitudes sometimes. Even so, taking another professor is advised. As semester goes on, only some survive this class.

The best Professor I have ever had. Bring a vest he does not play. Wear your thickest skin and be open to criticism. He breaks you but he will built you. There is no nonsense in his class. Take him and you will get a glimpse of what the standards are. If you like challenges and you are open to growth then I suggest you take him,Otherwise stay home.

Most influential instructor I ever had. It's been over 30 years since I was in his class, and he is the only one I still remember. He brings out the best in you! Really he changed my life. His was my first class a a freshman and the first A I ever received in any class. After that every other class was an A. He will accept nothing but the best

I LOVE Dr. James. What an amazing man. I took all classes he taught; even Early American Literature!! He is an experience all on his own. I can't believe he is still teaching. I graduated 1991 and I remember him and his classe like it was yesterday. I would go back all over again. He said I wrote more on an exam than any student he ever had

Dr. James is amazing and I'm taking another class of his next semester. He automatically accepts students that have taken the class even if they're on the waitlist. Tough and can seem rude, but once you learn his sense of humor it becomes kind of endearing. He's high class and sophisticated. You actually learn in his class if you pay attention.

He is a very smart guy and will make you open your eyes if you look dumb. I like his discipline and his lectures are just AMAZING. I wish I would have recorded them. Be ready to have a class where you will earn every percentage of your grade with tough study and work. It is difficult to find a teacher like him. I wish I could take him again.

Prof James is a native teacher teaching in UCLA. I think his class is wonderful. If you work hard, you can pass his class. He is going to help you as much as he can. Studying his class, you are not only getting knowledge but also getting the lesson of life.

PSA: BEST teacher... Changes your academic mindset and how you analyze matters. If you want higher learning then i greatly suggest taking this professor. If you meet with him in office hours and develop a relationship then the class is much better btw. He cares for his students.

Some say he's mean, but that isn't the case. Yes, he can be hard. He will seem scary, but he does it because he sees potential in you. Very open-minded about all types of people. I took his class last semester and no doubt his love for literature will rub off on you - if you let him. Yes, some people may find him rude, but he does it out of love and concern for his students. I took his class 3 semesters: 1A, 1C, and his English Romantic Literature Class. I was a math major at the time and his method of teaching really made me ponder changing my major. Yes, he is hard but he helped me improve my writing and taught me a new way of interpreting works. I think he will always be one of my favourite teachers.
