Great sense of humor
Great class on Chinese culture...
Dr. Jankowiak is very unorganized and does not give clear direction of what is expected in class. He actually didn't even give us a syllabus, which caused confusion all semester over what work was needed, due dates, etc.
Dr. Janjowiak is one of the best professors at this university. He is so interesting and will defintely keep your attention and make you think. There is a lot of reading in this class but it is all very good. I don't think he is unclear at all.
He makes learning about Chinese culture fun..while sometimes laughing at ourselves. Great class and loved the movies. The dialogue between Professor Jankowiak and students was refreshing (see different perspectives). Highly recommended !!
His Magic, Religion and Witchcraft class was awesome. Really a terrific guy.
Good class and instructor. easy if you follow along and do the reading. More religion than I was hoping for and not as much on magic, but I understand why people wait in line to get into this class.
I learned a lot of interesting material in this class! If he changed the course information every semester, I would re-take the class just to learn more.
I liked the class but I felt it was a lot of work for a 101 class. If you listen to the lectures and read you do well. I enjoyed the information but there was too much reading.
The best teacher I have ever had, I loved his classes and even took an extra 2 of them that didn't fulfill any requirements towards my major. An amazing professor!
This was a webCT course. His lectures were so far off topic that it was difficult to understand what was required on the exams. Crazy..thats my opinion...he is nuts.
I have taken 2 WebCT courses with this teach & he's great. Easy & interesting! Basically know the lectures well & you'll do fine. I've gotten A's in both classes w/out much work!
He's such an awesome teacher!! Just make sure you do the readings, and you're sure to get an A!
Most awesome teacher in the world! Lectures are interesting, grading is fair, and tests are written well.
I agre, he is an amazing teacher, very interesting and very concerned about you actually learning the stuff. there are 6 books to read, which is not easy and it definetly takes time. One paper of 16-20 pages for mid-term and a final over the last three books. All the material is interesting but it does take a lot of time and effort.
Great teacher, lectures are interesting. Paritcipation is key but really easy because topics are fun.
Class was ok..I think it would be better in class (I took it online). I do recommend his class.
This online class was a joke! Very little sign of the professor in discussions. When students asked a question directed towards him, there was no response. Students had to figure it out on their own. Told class wrong books to buy. The tests were filled with spelling errors. He took a vacation during the semester. Not very professional. Lame course!
This was a most impressive overview of psychological theory and practice I have ever encountered. The lectures are clear and interesting and the professor is every ready to answer questions send to his private email. There is alot of reading but it is interesting.
I have mixed feelings on this professor. His class had great material the class discussions were upbeat and mostly interesting. I am not sure about his view on women and anthropology in general. Three books to read that were very good, and then one long paper and a semi easy final. Overall an okay, but memorable class.
Great teacher and very interesting class
Maybe he's better in person, or teaching other anthro courses, but the one I took this semester online was TERRIBLE. No interaction with students, his email replies took at least 2 days to respond, he had no helpful notes, a lot of reading, and his lectures were extremely disorganized! His exams are hard too! Don't take him!
I have mixed feelings also. In person, he's an AMAZING professor with knowledge that will stun you. In the online class, he was hard to find, tests were FULL of typos which further confused the already ambiguous question, Lectures were more left-field rants than anything else. This class was a waste of my time. I should have taken it in person.
Great teacher!!
I took the online course. First thing to know: LOTS of reading. 6 case study books. (Tip: make sure you look up and define every term he puts on his syllabus before you take the tests.) Not easy, but an amazing curve. This isn't a generic anthro course. I had dropped another ANT 101 class out of boredom, but I found this one unique and interesting.
He is a great professor. I took his online class and was very impressed. Always had a e-mail response within 24 hours with is very important for an online class. He does give a curve for the exams. As long as you read the books and watch videos you should be fine.
In a summer term he lightens the reading requirements significantly, and the bulk of the questions are taken directly from the lectures. Easy as pie, truthfully, but there were still some schmoes complaining. Very interesting topic, and I always enjoy Dr. J's videos!! He's become one of my favorite professors at UNLV.
Insightful and thought provoking. Everyone should be required to take this class.
took this class online. fairly easy. grade based on two tests. Just watch lectures and read books and you will do fine.
I don't know what all the hype is over about this class. The video lectures were filmed four years ago and he gives inconsistent message about grades (i.e. syllabus says paper is worth 20 points, an email he sent says it's worth 14). It just didn't seem like there was any effort on his part. Spelling/grammar errors on tests also drove me crazy!
The videos used are at least 8 years old. Really outdated and incomprehensible. Even when I could not understand what he was saying, the captions were worse!! Grrrr!! He is not very clear in his lectures at all - and the following lecture he does try to clarify --- to no avail!!!! There is no textbook, only his outdated lectures. Tae ANTH from
Do not take this class - very difficult to understand the professor. He mispronounces words and is unclear. Videos, like others stated, are WAY outdated. This is a disorganized class - no discussions, no interaction. He's a nice person, just not a good teacher.
This class was very easy going, his lectures(online)were very informative and entertaining. His test are pretty much based on the lecture videos. I would say an easy A... or B :)
This is a demanding online class. Must read six books, two written by him, to pass the exams. Interesting topics, but the video lectures can be diffcult to sit through. Class might be better in person instead of online.
I highly recommend Dr. Jankowiak's classes. The course's reading during the summer is very light and Dr. Jankowiak's lectures are informative and thoughtful. He responded to class emails quickly and courteously.
Took this class online; this class is hard! The professor is very knowlegeable but can be very unclear. The video lectures are old and are not of good sound/video qualilty. 6 books to read for the class some are very interesting some are very boring. Read the books and watch the video lectures and take good notes you will be fine. I got a B...
I took his online class, it was interesting for the most part, but SOOOO much reading. There were 6 books, and a few were very boring. Only 2 exams, which were hard, but he grades on a very generous scale. There were also several video lectures, which I found hard to sit through. Overall, not too bad. But be warned about the workload.
I've had Jankowiak for ANTH 403 & 422 and I like him a lot. Most of the people leaving bad ratings ARE BAD STUDENTS! His classes are probably amongst the hardest at UNLV, so if you are not prepared to read and critically think 24/7, you may not want to take his class. He grades based on a midterm paper and final. If you fall behind you fail!
Pretty easy class. 2 exams 1 paper. He grades on a curve so that turns out pretty good. requires 6 books I didnt read any of them or the lectures and still managed to get a B in the class.
Took this class online.Yes, there are 6 books, but they were interesting accounts of people in societies other than ours (U.S.)Yes, this is a hard class for a 101, but if college courses were easy, everyone would have a college degree, that's what separates you from others. If being a CEO of a fortune company was easy then everyone would be one!
Took online summer class; only 3 books instead of usual 6 in regular sem.Watched videos 3 times ea.(total of 6 vids)& took COPIUS notes, mid term & final & aced them both with A's!?'s to the professor, he is quick to respond.Ofcourse there's ALWAYS plenty of dumb students who constantly ask annoying questions before reading syllabus completely!
Wonderful professor. Online class is great. Only grades are the midterm, final and a short paper. but the paper is added to your midterm so its essentially extra credit. Tests are kind of hard but he gives clear study guides for the books. Take notes during the lectures tho!! half of the exam questions come from his lectures! Great class.
Took online. The books are okay to read- not too boring even though there are about 4-5 books. His video lectures are the worst! He talks pretty fast and doesn't have any sort of outline to go with them so you are watching them blind. Not to mention 80% of the tests were on the lecture videos! I would not recommend this class!
took online course and the video/sound quality for the video lectures is terrible. with basically no knowledge of the lectures I still managed a high b on midterm just from reading the books. lectures pointless. i took soc 101 at the same time and they are very similar disciplines, maybe this helped me.u will learn a lot from the assigned reading
Not bad at all. You have to do the work for you to pass. Good response time from professor. The videos are of poor quality audio is rough also. Books are very interesting I enjoyed the class. I wish the professor proof read his emails though there were many mistakes. But this is a per peeve of mine.
Overall, a good class and great professor. The video lectures were sometimes hard to follow. 5 books to read for semester. Graded on Midterm, Final and a writing assignment. Read the books, take lots of notes from lectures and you should do just fine on the tests. He gives you a reading guide for the tests too, which is very helpful.
Took online.Mid term & final easy if you watch the videos & read the 5 required books & take notes. Also provides notes for the books.1 easy paper due which is added to your mid term test score. He is really easy going and prompt with emails.
Enjoyable teacher. Tests are straight forward. He makes the content of the course interesting. Makes fun/tells a few jokes about current events around campus. I took him online so I could rewatch the lectures and get more out of them.
Took this as a summer class and this was my second class with Professor Jankowiak. As always, his lectures are interesting and so long as you take good notes and read the material you will do well on his tests. Professor Jankowiak is a great teacher and I would highly recommend him to anyone interested in taking his classes!
I took this class online. Had to read 6 short novels. There were no assignments. 1 video lecture per week and just 2 tests (midterm and final) Sounds scary, but it wasn't bad. He gave us study guides. As long as you read the stories and watch the video lectures, you are basically guaranteed a B :)
Probably the worst course I have taken in my entire undergrad career. His video lectures are so old and extremely hard to follow and are actually useless because the way he tests in no way relates to the way he lectured so your always confused. Way to much to read and absolutely no structure, not even a proper syllabus. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!
Some of the questions on his tests are not found anywhere in his lectures nor in the books he assigns us to read. This guy is disorganized in thought and in his teaching ability.
This guy has 6 books to read and a video lecture for the online course. There are questions on the test that arent in the books or lectures. He was going to curve the midterm and then after the test didnt. He also changes the due dates all the time. There is a lot of extra credit available. I would take someone else. This class is so disorganized.
This class was confusing for me, the syllabus was incorrect and questions we were told to focus on from the book readings were not on the exam at all. I found the videos difficult to open and old, and reaching the teacher over e-mail is hit or miss. Pay attention to the obscure in the videos and watch them multiple times and take notes! Do the EC!
I HATED this class, sad as I was excited to try anthropology. The lectures are old, the audio quality is terrible. The tests do not accurately reflect the material given and there isn't the REQUIRED discussion. I work full time and a full time student. Why should I shove my schedule around for extra credit when the professor refuses to do his job?
I Love this class - we explored core topics and discussions on erotic differences between men and women was memorable. The grading is very fair.
The books are interesting. I learned a lot. Study the terms and reading questions and you will get an A. It is rather straight forward. He curves the exams too. Also do the extra credit - it helps.
Class terribly interesting. The required paper is not difficult and the final exam is short and easy. I learned a lot.
This class is very interesting although the lectures are a bit dated. The professor is extremely nice and very fair to his students. He encourages us and if a date has to be changed, he does it in our favor and to accommodate our schedules.
This is an easy class if you have the time for it. We had 5 books to read, as well as the lectures so it is time consuming but I found the books to be easy reads and he had lecture notes prepared for us already at the beginning of the semester. You cannot slack in this class, you WILL fall behind and get a low grade, even with the curve he gives.
Although there is a lot of reading for this course, it is all highly interesting. If you do the reading and watch the video lecture you will probably do okay in the class. The video lectures are also interesting, and entertaining even though they are old.
5 books to read, 2 exams & 2 optional papers, which he adds to the exams. He grades on a curve (probably b/c his questions didn't parallel w/ course material). He seemed to hand out extra points like it was candy, which was rather sweet! Didn't read all books, didn't watch all video lectures, did the extra credits, and received an 'A'.
Dr. J gives great lectures for a very interesting subject. I scored 100% on the paper - HOWEVER, his sample questions for the 2 exams are only MILDLY helpful. His exams are DIABOLICAL if you haven't read the book THOUROUGHLY. If you're only taking a couple of classes & have nothing but time to read, I highly recommend this class - if not, skip it.
Was in a crunch for a class I needed to graduate and this was the only one that sounded mildly interesting that fit. He let me in even though it was full, and it was a great course! The books are interesting. Do the extra credit!! He adds it to your exam points and the exams are tough because the focus is everywhere.
I have taken 2 of Dr Jankowiak's classes and found them to be incredibly interesting based on the material. He is a bit difficult to follow at times, but you will do well in his class if you actually read the books and follow his lecture notes.
This was the least organized online class that I have ever taken. There is NO clear direction provided, you have to figure it out on your own. The due dates were mismatched between the syllabus, WebCampus, and his emails which made it very confusing. When I finally found his video lectures it seemed like he would have been great in person. :(
Unorganized, late, typos, and that's just the syllabus! His midterm, 86 True or False questions, was only difficult because of the ENORMOUS amount of spelling/grammatical errors. I would not recommend taking him for an online class. OH and be prepared to buy six, Yes SIX, books that are darn near impossible to find after week one.
Don't be put off by him too much. Give him some time, if he's not your cup of tea. It helps to be aware of the topics in the class, however you don't have to be on top of everything. Reading the books does help with the essay and finals. He does give a lot of lectures, but discussions are between them also.
The class was interesting but I was never really sure what was going on. The subject matter was all over the place. Wouldn't take it again, but it was definatelt interesting.
His passion for Anthropology makes me want to pursue something that finds me as much joy. Cola was really a piece of cake.
I wanted to like this class but I'm not sure what I just took. It's supposed to be an introl level class into Cultural Anthropology and yet I feel like I just listened to someone ramble on with no clear objective. The tests aren't hard but it would certainly help if someone could spell check the questions prior to the exam date. Oh.. and 6 books.
I do don't try to understand help you. Was that sentence tough to read? That's what this ENTIRE class is from start to finish! I understand, everyone makes spelling/grammar errors. But when people are paying for your services/teaching, you should use Spellcheck! Lecture heavy, unclear learning objectives, tons of books, and frustrating exams.
In my experience, Mr Jankowiak is a very knowledgeable professor and shows real concern for his students. He's not the most traditional and his teaching requires a lot of reading and jumping topic to topic, but he is always equipped with stories of his travels around the world and what he's learned from them, making him a professor like no other.
Super passionate about what he's teaching. His lectures are kind of unorganized and his topics jump from one to another. Constantly having class discussions and he uses a lot of personal experience in discussions. If you just listen to his stories, you'll pass the final. Theres only one paper and the final exam which are both super easy.
There are only two assignments, your midterm and final. His lectures were all over the place, so it made it difficult to follow him, which also made the exams difficult. There's an extra credit paper that you can do and he'll add those points to the final. You do learn a lot though.
Class is all lecture and books, however the reading material is written by the professor himself and is horrifically uninteresting to try and read. Tests are heavy and based on information that you don't even really get in the books and or lectures. This class is not a interesting 101 nor is it easy.
This online class was based on 2 tests, each around 80 majority true/false questions. EVERY SINGLE QUESTION on these tests was riddled with grammar and spelling errors!! Some questions were missing the noun that the question was based around, absolutely unprofessional. Deciphering the pigeon English tests made this class hard.
This class was awful and I would not have passed had it not been for my class forming a study guide. The professor is so unorganized. The class had a hard time understanding his study guides and tests. You are required to read 6 books. You are graded on your midterm and final. The discussions are optional. The way he words things are tricky.
I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Jankowiak's class. I had to take this class as apart of my major, but is a foreign culture credit. 2 tests, midterm, final & a paper. Since it is online, you can go at your own pace - but he allows enough time for all lectures & books he requires for the class. I enjoyed the books provided, would take a class of his again.
The books that are assigned are pertinent to the course. It does help if you read and listen to lectures to make the information more relevant and more intriguing in terms of the course. His lectures are recorded and they are actually interesting. The class is a bit challenging but he responds to emails rather quickly should you have any questions.
Jankowiak is amazing. His class made me think about so many things I never thought about. You can clearly tell he is passionate about what he studies. He knows so much that often he can go on tangents but I looked forward to his class every single day. He respects his students and truly cares about your opinion. Participate!! Tell him your opinion!
The lectures are hard to follow because he does not use a textbook. The books that where assigned where extremely dry. He does provide 3 study guides that are irrelevant to the material being taught, and does not believe in providing feedback on discussion topics. If you can take this class at a cc, please do. You might actually enjoy the topic.
This class was very unorganized and unclear in the beginning, but he replies to emails very fast if you have any questions. Grade is based on midterm and final which are mainly true/false questions. You MUST to read the books (answer the study questions) and watch the lecture (maybe take notes). Big curve and extra credit!! Honestly, easy class.
A semester class was graded by 2 tests- midterm and final. You are honestly on your own. He was not helpful and I learned nothing. Only good thing was you were given 2 hours for online tests and every answer came from his horrible lectures and textbooks.
Professor Jankowiak provides a very interesting class. This was an online ANTH306 class, and it was quite easy if you just do the readings and watch the lectures. Work at your own pace, and take good notes!
Jankowiak's lecture videos are extremely old and rambling. A midterm and final were T/F questions only, were strangely worded, and questions were not always covered in lecture. He makes you read his own book for the course and it's not good.
My main complaint is that the lecture videos seemed a little old and outdated. The assigned readings were very interesting to me and I think I would have liked this course a lot more had it been in a traditional classroom setting. The only grades were 2 tests that were not that hard if you studied for them.
Bizarre semester. Until the mid-term, the class ran like clockwork. It was fun, interesting and educational. Instead of the promised mid-term, we got just another weekly quiz. From that point on, the class fell into chaos. You never knew what to expect each week. I would take Dr. Jankowiak again but not online. He was friendly and responsive.
Do not question him, period. Be a good student, stay quiet, do your homework, and again, do not question him (be warned)
Professor responded to emails quickly and seemed friendly. Class coursework was a total mess. The quizzes were different every week, some weeks skipped a quiz randomly, some quizzes were more points than others, some were cumulative and some were vocab based. Coursework is based off chapter reading, assigned reading, and lecture powerpoints.
Such an unorganized class. Quizzes were pretty much a surprise each week because you had no clue what they would be on. Said the quizzes would be on one thing but ended up being on something totally opposite. Professor is a little rude when you question him.
Seriously would not even think twice about taking this professor (online), dont even chance it. I have no clue where he got some of the questions for the quizzes/final.
Here's a professor that gets paid to do NOTHING. Takes all his questions from the internet, gives you a weekly quiz from the "textbook content" and doesn't let you use notes. If you're seen working together or switching tabs, even accidentally, you're at risk of getting expelled from the school. I couldn't tell you 1 thing I learned from this guy
Has no interest in actually teaching. Would rather talk into a mirror. Friendly, good person, but a horrible teacher. So many typos and errors in communications that you can't understand what he's saying. Will ramble for hours. No idea what I learned in his class (I got an A, but learned nothing substantiative or memorable).
I took this class for the fall semester of 2021 as I needed this credit. My experience with this class is a lot of reading, watching video lectures and there is almost no interaction from the teacher. It is a class at which you go on your own pace, the only two grades are the midterm and final so if you fail one you fail the class. Tests are hard!
The weekly work is a little heavy but tests are the easy if you just due even some of the assignned work. Don't cheat, it seems to be a huge pet peeve for this professor, half way through our semester he changed our quizzes to where you can't go back and look at questions after you've answered so that's annoying but other than that he was great.
If you pay attention, and speak up you'll be fine. He provides almost the exact test as a "study sheet" and all you need to do before the test is have a few classmates share a google doc and fill it in. The no homework besides reading is great for when you have a busier schedule. Most of all he genuinely cares about what he talks about.
I took this class online over the summer so it was accelerated and the professor didn't bother setting up his online modules or adapting the syllabus for a 5 week course. He didn't provide clear instructions for assignments, readings, or what to do for one of the only two assignments due.
