This is Mr. Jurneys first semester teaching at Normandale. He hands out lecture outlines and goes through the notes during each lecture. The quizzes and exams are very reasonable. It is A LOT of work, and A LOT of material!!! But it is very interesting. I think he is a great Anatomy teacher!!!
He is somewhat nice. He isnt understading. His lectures are interesting but boring. His exams are impossible. Exams have nothing to do with book its all about the lecture notes. Be perpared to study!!

Jurney is one of the most understanding teachers we have. He's willing to help students who are not even in his class. Great sense of humor, easy to approach and genuinely one of the nicest professors we have. Come to class, follow the lecture, get an A it's as simple as that. I would highly recommend him as a teacher of Human Biology or Anatomy.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. He is one of those guys that are so smart that they have no idea how to explain things to you. He just assumes that you can know what you are doing. He is condescending makes you feel you are so stupid to ask him any questions. I cant believe Normandale such an *** of an instructor!
Jurney is an awesome teacher, he knows A LOT about anatomy and will answer any question. This is a hard classs and you have to study alot, For those of them who rated Jurney badly, do not listen to them, you can tell by what they have written and how it is written they probably aren't cut out for a class like this anyway
As long as you go to class it's pretty easy. His notes follow with the book. I've found him to be very helpful, and he's very knowledgeable about the subject!
At first Jurney would test from his notes. Now who knows what he is going to test you on! I went from getting ALL A's and B's in his anatomy to getting C's on the last couple tests, but still studying the same amount of time and just as hard as always. It has turned into a guessing game at what he tests you on. Not happy with his teaching style
Be ready to work hard and study a lot. This is not an easy class, but Jurney is very good at explaining things. He hands out note outlines and if you go to class, write down the notes he gives you and are prepared to study, you will do fine. Jurney wants his students to suceed. You just have to be willing to put the work in.
Be ready to study a lot. This is a very difficult class. Jurney is very good at Anatomy, but probably does not understand that WE are NOT medical students. I am not sure he understands that students have jobs and families. if you have concerns talk to him about it. He is a nice guy and IS cute. He hands out notes, follow them and KNOW them.
Bill is the best teacher I have ever had and I have two degrees under my belt. If you want to succeed in Bill's class OR college GO TO LAB, READ THE BOOK AND HIS LECTURE NOTES. You will not be handed an "A" in this class YOU HAVE TO EARN IT- I did. Don't blame the teachers because you don't want to study or want to put time into Human Anatomy.
Bill is a very good teacher, but he is hard! Attendance is critical and you most take notes. Study the notes for tests. The text book is good for understanding the notes. Notes are the test. If your struggling ask for help and don't miss a class...you will be lost!
Bill is a great teacher. You will spend alot of your time to the oh mighty Anatomy book and a great deal of your time in lab. As far as his personality goes...He has a great sense of humor and to me this makes him atractive.
Nice enough, just barely grades fair, really gotta fight for something good. TAKE REUTTER OR CARLSON, YOU'LL GET A BETTER GRADE 100% GUARANTEED
He knows his stuff, but has an ego.He would laugh when students asked questions. His tests are very hard but are worded from the textbook. If you get the book chapters down you'll be fine. His study packets were useless and confused me. He has absolutely no tolerance or leaniency what so ever.
lets be honest, this class is soooooo hard - this was my second time taking it and i actually passed with jurney! going to class is almost mandatory because of the material - this class is a lot of work but jurney is a good teacher to take it from
Would be fun to go out for drinks with him, i.e. fun, intelligent guy. Doesn't believe in helping students with study guides or tools to assist students succeed.
Wow! This class is tough!! He has a very dry sense of humor and is a little hard to read. TAKE NOTES!!!! TAKE NOTES!!!! BE IN CLASS!! GO TO THE LAB!!!!
i love this class. he's kind of an idiot in the class room, like he goes on tangents about stuff that doesn't applyto the material--but he is great in lab and he help alot with memorization and things like that to help you remember things.
Lets be honest, this is a really difficult class, and you need to study alot! But Bill does little to help his students succeed. He offers no opportunities for review, provides no list of testable topics to help you study. And he actually believes that his tests are easy, and cannot figure out why his students are failing. Go figure.
Great teacher - he is passionate about the subject and does a really good job of presenting the material. It's not a class you can slack off in, but don't blame Bill if you don't do well - he is there to answer questions and provide help. Ultimately, you have to put a lot of time into this class, but an A is totally attainable.
this class is really hard, he doesn't cover material well, and covers material fast....Do Not Take
He's the best biology teacher at NCC. Much clearer than Henrickson by far!!!
He does a good job of explaining things in a one on one session, but class room lecture can be confusing. There is alot to learn, so read ahead an write down questions that are confusing. Office hours weren't very flexible, but if you make arrangements, IN ADVANCE, he will try to work with you. Good Teacher!
If you stay down on the work and the lab time, you pretty much got this class down. The first quiz left me overwhelmed with a class average of 63%. But it got a lot easier after that, you just got to get in a different mode of studying. There is oral and written parts to quizzes/exams. Jurney is a relatively easygoing, just hard material.
He is an awesome teacher! We had tons of fun in the class. Something funny always happens.
I would not recommend Bill, he goes through lecture super fast and makes you feel like an idiot if you ask a question. He offers no study guide and he test on 4 chapters at a time(ton of information) his tests are impossible. He seems to smart for his own good and struggles to get his point across and mixes up his words which makes it even more confu
Wow! This was the most challenging class I've taken in college so far. Bill is a little strange with a quirky personality but he is definitely a good teacher and knows his material well! I spent a lot of time outside of class studying but I pulled off an A+. I recommend him if you really want to learn about the subject and not just get an easy
nice personality, was flexible on lab quizzes if you make an effort, many labs to do, the quizzes really help for the exams, the class was at a relaxed environment, he personally comes around to everyone and help out with our labs, he answers everyones question during lecture, knew more on human body now then ever, would recommend this instructor
He lectures directly from the book! His tests are clear and consise and he is actually funny too! I HIGHLY reccomend him. If you read the book and study you will do fine. It seems like a heavy workload at first but it gets better. all i can say is STUDY and you'll be fine!
Honestly..he is an amazing professor! He makes human biology interesting. He gives you packets for every chapter, so you memorize those for the tests and you'll be fine. Tests are difficult but you will definitely learn ALOT! Favorite college class so far..great professor, laid back, funny, and interesting! HIGHLY recommended!
good teacher. Do your work and pay attention. Tests can be tricky, but aren't they always?
May be great in other classes but for 1142- horrible! This is coming from an A student with 80+ coll. crdts. Rudest, least helpful, most condescending person I've ever had. Thought his sarcasm was amusing until I realized he wasn't trying to be funny. I would not call him a teacher... he just fills a space in a very ugly, patronizing way!
Better anatomy teacher than physiology teacher. Lectures are fun, but test are more difficult than Reutter's. I recomend taking 1142 with someone else other than him. Our class average on test is only about 72% and there is still one more test and the final.
Phys is a very challenging class- of the 80 that started, maybe 30-35? left at the final. Lectures follow the book, but he lectures as if all of it is review. Style can be arrogant, but better 1 on 1. Got an A but worked really hard for it.
This guy gives unreasonable tests and doesn't seem to have a genuine interest for the students. i don't know why he went into education. He's the worst teacher that speaks english that i've ever had.
I took it during the summer, and it was insanely hard. I didn't crack the book a single time, and I spent about 1-2 hours studying before the tests. I managed an A by exactly 1 point. He is very helpful in lab, and during office hours. Just make sure you go over the notes, and it shouldn't be too difficult.
Exams are hard, the lectures are ok, better to read the book, he does not give ANY new info, everything from textbook, basically he read it , sometimes makes fun, but he does not know his subject deep enough.
Extremely helpful if approached. Intense class, but he really knows his stuff (even the tutor says he is the best Anatomy teacher here). You definitely have to attend class - exams match lecture notes almost to the T. It's not an easy A, but you feel like you earned it if you can get it! Expect to work hard. But great Professor!
He's the worst teacher to be teaching Human Physiology. He grades individually inspite of the fact that the class average was 60-a "D". You'd be lucky to maintain a "C" or achieve a "B". He has high expectations from students, unfortunately he doesn't teach as thoroughly for us to meet them. Nature-wise he is a nice person.
Total jerk. One of the most condescending teachers I have ever had. His tests are impossible. He thinks he's being funny but he comes across as a jerk. Our test averages usually hover around 65-70%, considerably lower than Reutter and Carlson's classes. He doesn't offer reviews, answers questions with questions, highly NOT recommended. Avoid.
He is one of the best teachers I've had. As previously stated, you do need to work for an A-crazy concept apparently? He is extremely willing to help and his lectures are very clear and follows his hand out-which is generous (surprisingly someone asked for a study guide!). 2nd time I took him & would take him again in a second. He's excellent!
The classmates of mine that say avoid or a jerk consider the source. Was it one of the students that put no effort into it? Heard a few times before tests "I decided to take a nap instead of studying" or "I studied for an hour" - really, this is college, not grade school people! & answering w/a ? - he wants you to think! Crazy concept I guess.
Good instructor. Tests follow his lecture notes exactly. Like other Bio classes you get what you put into this class: study hard and you'll get an A; slack off and you won't do so well. He's very willing to help out in lab and answer questions--he does employ a Socratic approach which does actually help you understand/learn the material better.
I would not recommend taking Anatomy with Jurney.
He was the worst teacher I've ever had. He always answers questions with another question.
I took his Physiology class last semester, it was very hard, I am happy that it is over. I liked his sexy smile
Well, he did try very hard to keep the class intimidated. I worked as hard as I could. The only good grade I ever got was on my Drugs and the Mind Paper. And that's because my department is English. Also, he DOES answer a question with a question. Seriously, who does that????
AMAZING teacher! Took his Anatomy class and worked my butt off to get an A. Have a degree in Microbiology and was pre-med in college; now persuing nursing. Never worked this hard in my pre-med classes! He is smart, quick, witty, and extremely helpful if you take the initiative. But then again, he isn't there to hold your hand/spoon-feed you.
Took his anatomy class and chose to take physiology with him just because I knew I would get a superior education. Other profs. at NCC are easier but you are not as well-equipt when you leave class. Bill rocks! Attend lecture religiously and study your NOTES!
Bill is a great teacher and really knows his stuff! He's very clear and helpful in lab. He's got a sense of humor which makes the class a bit more fun. Really enjoyed his class and def. recommend him!!
He is very funny and will make sure that you think. He wont just give you an answer but he will lead you right up to it. He is approachable. His class was difficult but that was more due to the material than any lacking on his part. As long as you show up, take him seriously and don't talk while he is trying to lecture you will be on track to pass.
Yes, yes and yes!!! take him! yes his exams are hard, but you will learned so much. I took before him Reutter had to drop it, because of his unclarity. I am very happy that that finally I got a smart and good professor. Bill is very nice person too.
I am about a B average student, and absolutely love this professor, Im in his anatomy class right now. One of the best next to chuck nickles in psych. I have to try hard in this class but his sense of humor keeps me awake and focused! He has clear directions and doesnt clutter d2l with bs... hes straight forward and great at what he does.
I recommend to the student who wants to learn Biology Human Anatomy and Psychology with Mr.Jurney,he will guide you and teach you the right way to study. All you do is spend your time each day to repeat the lecture and lab. I bet you can get A or B grade. He is very nice person, too. He trough a joke at the lecture; His class show is hilarious.
Excellent professor, really wants you to learn. Clear, precise, funny, and helpful.
I loved Jurney! Very hard but teaches well! If you ask a question he will explain thoroughly! I had to drop for personal reasons other than the class but was very disappointed to learn he wasn't teaching it in spring sem. Highly recommend, but do not expect an easy grade or hand holding! His is very funny and class is always enjoyable:)
very hard class, hard exams, hard material. great prof, expains everything very well. make sure to go over things many times
Be prepared to put it the time to get the grade. He's very tough, but not impossible. Don't miss a lecture and using a recorder in his class is very helpful
He hands out lecture notes, and that's exactly what you are tested on. It's hard, but the grading is very fair. I had him for Anatomy and Phys. Phys was MUCH harder. You really need to know the material to answer the short answer/essay questions.
Jurney is the best science teacher one could hope for. Yes he is very demanding of your knowledge, however, you will always remember what he teaches. Interactive, engaging, thorough. Regular review is necessary, as is COMPLETE comprehension to answer essay questions. Will push you further than anyone. Most bang for your buck.
I took his Phys class this spring and I loved him. It was extremely challenging and I basically worked my rear off, which I think is why he sometimes gets a bad rap...but truly he is a great teacher who really knows his stuff and makes you think. A lot of people get frustrated when he answers a question with a question, but it makes you learn!
One of my favorite professors! He makes you think and you have to know the material very well. Has tricky questions but not impossible. He's a great person and very nice if you get to know him. He's also very funny and kinda cute.
He gets behind on his lecture schedule and his tests are very confusing and make no sense what so ever! There have been many students that have dropped this class, the average test scores are always under 60%. My GPA is usually very high, but this class could ruin anyones GPA
Jurney is an awesome professor. He's really friendly and funny. The class is hard, the material is hard, but you'd expect that with Bio. He makes it really easy to learn with his lectures, they're very clear and contain a ton of information. This class takes a lot of work, but taking it from Jurney is definitely worth it.
Jurney was very fair with grading, and very clear on test material. No, the material is not super easy, but college classes aren't supposed to be. Lecture isn't mandatory, but that's where the exam material comes from!
was totally in love with him, he is the sweetest thing have ever met........
ths professor sucks his test material goes to far into detail and he expects all or nothing answers he is an unfair grader and expects you to be an expert on the subject your are paying to learn about
He is a nice guy and tries to keep lecture relaxed. I typically do pretty well in school and I really struggled with this class. I spent days studying for an exam, only to get a D. The material he talks about is so vague & not explained as in-depth as the tests! I would not recommend him unless you have LOTS of time on your hands to study.
Great class tho I struggled I enjoyed his hard lectures and labs.
His assignments had nothing to do with the exams. I took his online class only to find out that he rarely checked his emails or responded to questions or concerns. His class was the worst experience I have had in my college career so far. I would never take any of his classes again.
This is a tough course! However, Mr. Jurney is very fair and spells out very clearly what it will take to receive a passing grade (C or higher) in the class. It was interesting, though writing intensive. The writing assignments were interesting. It's a great class to fill a non-lab science requirement. I highly recommend this class.
Loved this class and Prof. Jurney. Was it easy? No. Did I learn? Absolutely. Like another student mentioned, it was writing intensive, but I really enjoyed that part. All expectations are spelled out in the beginning, so there is no question what is expected of you. I would love to take another class with him.
This was an accelerated, online course that ran for 5 weeks and covered about 12 chapters. It was very fast-paced and there were a lot of terms to remember. The test questions were very difficult and required you to know the fine details of the readings. I had to work very hard to earn a B.
I do not recommend him. If you receive one bad grade (B or C) on the exam, there is no recovery.
"Doc" Jurney is a superb lecturer. He adjusts his pace for those of us who love to take good notes, and sprinkles in humor to break things up. I am always sad when lecture is over. It's like listening to a good saga. He is extremely fair, info not covered by lectures are not on exams. In lab, he goes the extra mile to explain things very clearly.
Dr. Jurney is a wonderful professor, and is very helpful when you need help, especially in lab. His explanations are thorough, and tests your understanding by quizzing you after his explanations. He is a tough grader, but I'd rather take the challenge than to be bored and uninterested. If he taught physiology in the fall, he'd be my first choice.
Jurney is a GREAT teacher. Yeah if you don't go to class you won't do well on the Lecture exams. Because if you go to class the exams are still fairly challenging. I would recommend reading some of the text because he doesn't cover EVERYTHING you will see on the exams. Overall, I would take a class with him again.
I found myself practically running to lecture because I was (for once) EXCITED about the material being taught in lecture. I feel Jurney had a huge part in that. His lectures were engaging and practical, he would break things up from powerpoint to drawings on the board. I ended with a C, but I feel I learned a lot and enjoyed it.
I rented the textbook for the semester but found that it wasn't necessary. Go to class. Everything he goes over in class will be on the exams. Recording the lecture would be a helpful tool to go back and listen to what he talks about again. Histology - microscope stuff - super important to memorize, so pay attention... GO TO CLASS!!
This class is very difficult; he does not go into depth in lecture as he does in his exams. I study hours on end for his exams just to receive a D. He is a great teacher during lab; he is very patient and helpful. He wants his students to succeed but he does not make anything easy.
I took this class in high school last year with an amazing teacher. I get to college and we are going over material and i'm like "What is going on?" He is a very tough grader, and his tests suck. Our class average for every test was a low C. I feel like if he would explain things better; not just go off his slides, i would have done alot better.
BIO2041 was by far the hardest class i have ever taken. I had to drop out because of how poorly i was doing. He does not make the class easy at all. I would study for hours on end just to receive a D or F. This class requires all your energy and TIME in order to pass. He seemed like a nice guy- the class was just impossible. !!!!!GO TO CLASS!!!!!
I got an a in his class. He says the first day in class we will not need to know something we didn't go over in class. I recorded his lectures, went home, and listened to them to study. Took extra notes from these and always got an A on the exam. If confused go to his office hours he will explain more.
Jurney is my 2nd Anatomy professor and I liked him a whole lot better. He's clear on what he expects from you. He prints out the slides for you to take notes on. Attendance isn't mandatory but is important bc if you miss a handout, it won't be online. Prior knowledge is the key to doing well in this class, so I recommend taking Human Biology 1st.
Bill is a great instructor. He incorporates some humor in his lectures to help engage students. He is very helpful in lab. Spends extra time explaining all aspects of a question students ask in lab. Expect to go to every class, he will not hand out or post lecture to on D2L for those whom skip a class.
A lot of people withdrew from the class. It's very difficult if you are a full time student and working part time. Make sure you have plenty of free time for lab and studying. It's a lot of information.
Of all the Anatomy teachers at Normandale Dr. Jurney is by far the best. I really enjoyed his lectures, and he tried to make them as funny and interesting as he could. I barely used the text book because everything you need to know he goes over in lectures. There is only one homework assignment all year, but expect to do crazy amounts of studying.
I took this course in the summer (5 week course) & attend a different school. I was prepared for the challenge but this was far more challenging than expected. Previous students understood his way of teaching better than the students who were visiting. Tests were every Monday and they were difficult. Great professor and really care- but hard.
Lectures were interesting! Normally I read the book and lectures are extremely boring and I lose focus. Jurney worked in extra tid bits that were relevant, interesting and/or funny. If you have trouble with memory you need to study everything 10 fold... nature of the material.
I've only had him for Human Anatomy lab, but he is amazing. He was always there to answer my questions and he never made me feel bad for asking so much. He is so very helpful in lab, and he made me understand some things that look like a different language at first sight. I recommend taking him, or even just getting to know him in lab.
This isn't an easy class for many and to have your entire grade reflect on how you test is the worst. No homework, but if you fail one lab you basically fail them all. If you fail one exam, you basically fail them all. If you do poorly on anything say goodbye to your grade. If you don't have the time for this class, DO NOT TAKE IT.
Human Anatomy is a TOUGH course. Be prepared to spend HOURS AND HOURS in the lab. Other instructors give out study guides, but these are just busy work. Jurney won't baby you, but his class is straight forward, and he's always willing to help, especially if you spend a lot of time in lab. Lecture exams are STRAIGHT from lecture. No surprises.
To start i had never done biology before and the funniest thing was that i decided to take this course in the summer and the class was really tough. It requires a lot of studying and memorizing even the labs sections. But i struggled and ended up with a B+ but i knew i could do much better. Mr Jurney is the best biology teacher highly recommended.
His class consists of 4 exams + final. Labs are only 10 points (10labs). He goes really fast in lectures so be sure to come to class prepared already understanding everything. Not a lot of points given out but does give extra credit on exams.
If you go to lecture and take notes, you should be fine. There is a lot of outside classwork that is required, too, so be prepared for that. The only grades in this class are for tests, which are difficult but he clearly lines out what you should study. Nice guy, I would recommend him for this class.
Jurney was awesome when it came to lectures and knowledge, but his tests were harder than other teachers and he is judgemental if you dont pick up the material fast enough. Hes very intelligent and can answer almost every question. Take Reuter.
Dr. J is very knowledgeable about anatomy and is very passionate about the material he presents. At first he seemed really tough and a bit short-tempered but as the semester wore on he was much more approachable. Class attendance isn't mandatory but he doesn't use the book so if you don't go you will fail. Great professor for a difficult subject.
What you learn in this class (and the grade you receive) is completely up to you. It's a lot of work and graded completely on tests, but if you put in the time you can succeed in the class. Jurney isn't the warmest fellow but does care about his students and is keenly aware of who is putting effort into the course. He will help you if you do.
pandemic AND summer student here. Bill sort of lacks communication skills and consideration. his exams were hard. just take someone else tbh. I had Physiology fully online & in summer, the work load was HEAVY (as expected I guess). Hes really organized on d2l though. but hes not that helpful. I got an A cause Im an A student. period. but hes... eh
i took physiology class in the summer. everything was so clear and he was great at telling you at the beginning of the course what to expect he also gave us extra credit for exams which was awesome. i would take this class again if i could.
