I had this class online and it was not too bad, but it would take a while for the teacher to enter your grades for viewing and to get back to you thru email. the test arent too bad but somewhat challenging. homework is relivant to the tests. look over all your stuff!
Great class, very interesting, professor is very interested in the subject and is very knowledgable. I highly recommend this class everyone who either likes astronomy or merely needs a science credit.
Koch is not a good teacher. I highly advise that you do not take his course. He is lazy and does not care to answer any of your qustions.
I found that Prof Koch was a very understanding, and helpful professor. He went beyond what was needed to ensure that I understood what I had missed in a couple of lectures. I found him to be a very interesting, and knowledgeable instructor; willing to help students to achieve their best in his class.
I took professor Koch's class and found him to be very helpful and respectful of what you had to say in class. For someone who already knows the answers to easy questions he made it ok to ask anyway. He made me want to participate in class and lab. I would recommend him for this class and others as well. We are lucky to have him at JCCC.
mr koch.. he is not very helpful... only thing that is good about his class is everything but labs are online and you get plenty of time to work on the stuff... he is a loon.. listen to his double letters if you get a chance.. not that that should be important but... he doesnt focus well either
Class was very awesome. It was the only class that I actully had any desire to regularlly attend! Mr. Koch kept the class up to date, even with changes that needed to happen.
Mr. Koch is one of my favorite professors at JCCC. He is very smart, yet doesn't make you feel stupid if you don't understand Astronomy. He gives students every chance to succeed in your class. He talks about stuff that is relevant and doesn't add a bunch of jargon that we aren't going to see on a quiz or test. I recommend him to all of my friends!
MR. Koch is a great professor!! He knows lots of stuff and teaches very hard on the class. His lecture is very clear and understandable. All quizzes and homework are taking on online at home.
Took course online and had a few technical issues, sent him e-mails and he was very helpful and apologetic. Actually pretty organized and makes class easy enough to pass yet hard enough to keep it interesting. I didn't know anything about Astronomy and I did fine in here, so it's not THAT difficult.
I took his online class and I did not think he was good at all. Nice in the beginning, but in the end not very helpful. I recieved short abrupt answers to my questions, so I quit asking questions. Seems like he is mean, although I never met him. All of my contact with him was email or discussion boards. I do not recomend him.
Mr. Koch taught difficult information in an interesting way. He was organized, followed the textbook, and was understanding. He made astronomy less intimidating.
Mr. Koch is the least helpful instructor I've ever had. Don't bother sending emails, you'll only get degrading, belittling, uninterested responses from him. The online class is demanding and plan on reading the text from front to back. I was extremely interested in learning this subject, so I didn't mind the readings. He never gave input online.
Professor Koch was the least helpful instructor that I have encountered. He was combative in his teaching style, his posted comments were very rude, he did not respond to emails, lots of misspelled words on his tests, the web instructions on posting class discussions were not written clearly. Think twice before signing up for his class.
This is guy is a mess. He thinks he's very interesting and entertaining but he's not. The labs are passable because you do it as a group otherwise only those that love astronomy would have a chance. I did well but it in reality learned the least of any class I took at Joco. I'm glad the class is over and can not recommend this prof at all!
Mr. Koch was a good professor. I did take his class online, however he was still really helpful when I needed assistance and was sure not to waste my time. Even though I'm not a huge fan of science, I was able to enjoy this class.
Professor Koch is a great professor to take Astronomy with. He presents the material in its entirety, not dumbed down at all, but he does so with the utmost clarity. He explains concepts and information in ways that not only get them across perfectly, but also make the subject very interesting and engaging. If you're willing to work a reasonable am
I thought Mr. Koch was a great professor. He is friendly and actually cares that we do well. He wants us to learn. He has always responded to my emails and messages in a timely manner--which is great because I have sent him a lot! His homework is straightforward and everything is very clear and organized. I would definitely recommend this teacher!
Good lecturer. Covers a lot of material in a straightforward way. Exams are consistent with the homework. Fortunately, he uses as little math as possible. You will work hard, but you will be rewarded.
Great Professor. Class is organized strangely. But, he is a great teacher. Poor comments are probably made by religious folk whom he may have offended unintentionally. You will write on the science/religion debate. Perhaps he could drop that portion as many students just can't handle it.
Helpful, interesting, personable, fair.
he grades pretty easily and has a very tentative class schedule, so you know what's expected.
Decent teacher, Have to read the book, quizes are pretty easy, tests are a little harder. "Schedule" is kind of hard to follow. LOTS of reading!
He was a great teacher, the class wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, but its still challenging. Just make sure to go to labs!!!
most of his class is online which sucks. if you have to take astronomy don't take it with him if you don't have good access to a computer.....class is really boring also he just reads the powerpoint to you
Worst teacher I've ever had and worst class ever taken. DON'T TAKE HIM OR THIS CLASS!!! I REPEAT DON'T TAKE HIM or THIS CLASS!!!
This is the worst teacher i've ever had. He just sits in front of the class and reads a powerpoint screen for 2 hrs straight. He doesn't explain anything and the class is basically all online. I'm a hard worker with a 3.8 GPA but it's impossible to learn anything with this guy.
Smart, funny and patient. I love teachers that are passionate about the subject they are teaching! This class is fantastic, and the professor is certainly not a "loon". He is helpful and entertaining. He obviously has a deep understanding of the subject he is teaching.
I don't really understand all of the negative comments. He provides ALL of the possible questions for each in class exam. All you have to do is scan that, and scan the text book for the homework/test and you'll do fine! Not quite an easy A, you do have to do some work (imagine that!), but over all it's easy. You have to DO the homework/ GO TO labs!
This class was very hard. A lot of reading on the online version. Professor Koch was accessible when I had question but the class just sucked.
Online class. Not too hard. Homework a little time consuming but not bad. All multiple choice. Tests mostly multiple choice, primarily from the homework. B/c of the online format you can use the book and hw on the test.
I really enjoyed this class. This so far has been the toughest class I have taken at JCCC. The grade is not free, you have to earn it but you will learn a lot. Mr. Koch always assisted with help in any way he could.
He is a really good professor, he is really funny and makes Physics sound easy.
Uhhh...this class blew. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE PHYSICS DO NOT TAKE ASTRONOMY!! This professor makes 150 points of your grade dependant upon outside observations which is fine because he was supposed to schedule 4 himself. He didn't and NONE were during his class period so we were forced to skip other classes! RUDE! none of us had the time! 50 outta 150
I would recommend Dr. Koch to anyone for the Astronomy class at least. Try to take it in person. He is an interesting guy. The negative comments apparently came from folks who didn't try or didn't show up. Both things that are required for this class. If you like Astronomy and/or physics, you will like Dr. Koch. Thanks
I took astronomy online. It was very time consuming but very interesting. I learned a lot more about the universe than I ever imagined was out there. I wish I would have taken it in the classroom, but Prof. Koch was willing to meet with me when I needed help with some physics concepts. Prof is prompt with responses.
Guidelines for this class should have required physics prior to enrollment. Since I failed to have the math skills necessary, I struggled from day one. His tests don't match up to the homework, you never know if you have the correct answers and then bomb the test since you have no clue what is correct. Poor response from Prof for online students
He doesn't make class easy, but he's clear about what it is you're learning. He's got a dry sense of humor, but it's hilarious! I enjoyed coming to class every day, he always made them interesting. Labs were kinda boring, but how exciting do you expect an astronomy lab to be? Also, he was fun to have around on viewing nights.
easy class. Good Teacher. Interesting. Funny. The people complaining about knowing math for the quizzes better go back to high school. all the homework and tests are done through angel which the homework was cake and most the test questions are from the homework so print out and keep it handy for the test. not hard to make it to 4 out of 6 viewings
Easy, worthwhile class. Show up, take notes, do the labs, take the quizzes and tests online, and there's no way you can fail, unless you are deliberately dense and difficult. Koch is witty, sarcastic, and fun to listen to. His powerpoints during class can be a bit tedious sometimes, but are available online as well.
super easy class! as long as you do the lab, you get an A. and all of the homework/quizzes/tests are online!
Just like everyone says, just show up and do the labs, take notes, don't miss the quizzes - which are in the first half of class. I really enjoyed his funny and witty personality and you can tell he loves the subject. Just be sure you know some basic math skills before you jump in. There's a lot of math!
Koch is a good instructor who gives every opportunity for students to do well. The class can be challenging but isn't overwhelming. Koch is very helpful and curves grades generously. If you can understand basic algebra, you'll have no problem with the math requirements of the class.
Need to make sure you attend class. A thought they could get by only attending labs and they bombed the exams.
Material isn't too bad, but you need to read the text (or other resources, which he encourages). Attendance to viewings can be a pain, but they are fun and we spend 1 less hour in lab each week because of them. He's a fun prof, loves his students, obviously loves astronomy. He can be tough, but always fair.
Don't sign up thinking you will just be memorizing star and constellation names. This is a real science course with some challenging (though fascinating) topics, some math, and expectations on par with any respectable college-level science course.
Great class! Be sure to go to the viewings as it really brings reality to some of the concepts.
Expectations are ridiculous. He believes everyone will cheat and goes above and beyond to make sure we don’t. Even reading the textbook and study guides, the test difficulty is unbelievable. Do yourself a favor, if you work full time and go to school full time, DO NOT take this class online; it’s just not reasonable. This is not graduate school.
Class can be tough in places, and I did have to work a lot, but I guess this IS a college-level class. I took him last fall and it was a good course, so I don't know what the problem is about having to do work. I ended up with an "A", and because if was tough, I feel pretty damn good about it.
I took this class last fall and got an "A". It was work, but hey, I guess this IS a college-level class. Because I had to bust my butt, I feel good about earning my grade.
I took this class several years ago. Most of the diagnostic coursework was online at the time. It was one of the most fun classes I have ever had! I am a 6 day creationist and his staunch evolutionism stance never upset me at all nor changed my thoughts on the subject. The way he taught science made me change my major physics. THANK YOU!!
I'm not good at math or science, but I always pass those classes with an A or a B... this class was practically impossible. The textbook is entirely online, poorly written and practically impossible to comprehend. The professor himself had very little to do with the class, but the way the material was laid out made it very difficult.
The class was very interesting and great but he was not helpful at all! You ask questions and he will only say look at the book. which is hard to find and only online.
Had the class over summer. Text is a bit challenging as it is online, but I simply printed it (old fashioned, I suppose). It's a NUTS pace, but I found Professor Koch always willing to help and answer questions. This is good as I was returning to college after 20 years and was horrified to take a science class over summer!
This class is challenging but not difficult. I say this because everything you need to pass the exams given to you. The catch? He does not ask for mundane facts but for you to apply the knowledge you gained. Koch is interesting teacher and he explains concepts in a lot of different ways to help you understand. Drops 2 lowest lab and quiz scores.
Dr. Koch warned that the class takes a lot of work, and he was right!!! What he uses as text needs a little work regarding clarity in some spots. He was helpful and always responded to discussion posts and emails within hours! It turned out pretty interesting.
Took this professor for Astronomy. The class itself was challenging, but his deadpan sense of humor made it enjoyable. He's only tough on the kids who sleep through class and then demand extra explanations. He was very accommodating when I missed a week of school (let me take a quiz early). The curve he applied to the tests saved my 4.0 for sure.
It was a good class and he was a good professor! I thought it was well organized with pretty clear assignments and expectations. There was some open discussion about the discussion forum requirements and I couldn't believe how hand-holding some students expect at the college level! Entitlement generation, I suppose...
Prof Koch is very willing to help with whatever question or concern you might have. Replies within minutes even on the weekends. Really wants you to learn and not just give answers on the forum. The text is online but really hard to follow, I had to look up things on the internet for it to make sense to me. I think he is very fair.
Amazing professor, he knows and is passionate about astronomy. You dont have to be a super genius, you just have to be dedicated.
Puts things from the book on powerpoint, then basically just reads what the book says. Seems excruciating to spend my time sitting there in class. Totally pointless... Except for all of his pop-quizzes, random in-class assignments, and labs.
Fun class! Hard tests, but curves. Best part was night at the Powell Observatory. Wish they offered part 2! Real science class, but you learn a lot.
He is a great Professor. If you do not like him, it is because you didn't study. He lays it all out there and tells you what you need to know. Compassionate and smart. One of the best professors I have ever encountered.
Terrific professor! He went way out his way to help me out when I was hospitalized. He cares about his students and is very helpful.
The Professor ignited an interest I didn't know I had. Very informative and funny!
i was amazed at how much astronomy involved! missed an A because I missed an exam date. i guess he has to be pretty firm on due dates. he answers question faster than most professors, often within a hour or so. wish the online class had the opportunity to use telescopes.
Just about finished with winter class. WOW! Lots of work, and LOTS of material to cover in 4 weeks! It doesn't seem like anything is omitted. I'm doing fine, but I sometimes wish I took it during summer because I would have more time to absorb it. Good teacher.
I took the 4 week Winter session and truly enjoyed this class. I can tell Koch is an excellent instructor. You have to enroll in his classes early because they fill up. The only negative about taking this class not having a lab. I think his ASTR 122 class would be great because that does have a lab.
great professor and great class. Let's you retake all the tests and make up one test if you forget to do it. All homework and tests are online open book except the final. Lab days cannot be made up. He drops your 2 lowest lab scores and your lowest quiz score. Curves all tests. It would take more effort to fail than it did to get an A+.
if you take his class online you are setting yourself up to fail. He is a great teacher but the class itself was just to hard to take it online i would recommend taking astronomy on campus. The labs are not in order and some are due before others so you have to make sure your looking online everyday.
i was stunned by how much the class covered! what i thought the class would cover was finished by chapter 2. There is some math but not alot. If your rusty at math, he helps you. Once we got going, I really enjoyed the course! Would take agian from Koch.
I had astronomy decades ago, but Koch taught a lot more than in my previous class (Only planetary astronomy). He seems to put a lot of time and effort to make classes interesting. I liked how he made topics relevant to our lives and our very existence!
Fun class. Unlike some of my professors, this online class was organized nicely. Prof Kock also response quickly to emails and discussions. It would have been helpful to have a bit more guidance on the new system, however.
He's a fun professor, but has a strict assignment and exam policy. I guess he has to. I don't usually like working in groups, but I had a good group and enjoyed the labs. He's very enthusiastic and goes above and beyond to provide interesting topics in some depth (black holes).
My councilor said it was an easy elective. WRONG! I soon found out it was a real science course, but likely more interesting than most. I worked pretty hard, but it was worth it. It helped that stuff was organized and I could tell what was due and when. Turned out pretty cool!
I thought I was done for. There as a mistake and I was dropped from all my courses and then had to be reinstated. Mr. Kooch was very helpful in getting me caught up. He was so nice about it. Thank you!
Dr. Koch puts out LOTS of material but exams aren't too hard if you prepare for them. Be ready to be blown away by some of the stuff!
great class! great professor!
Great prof. Great sense of humor and seems to really care for student. I didn't care for group planet presentation (not into group work), but made it work.
Good instructor. I'd definitely take him again.
5 Long tests that quizlet has almost no answers to! Lots of homework, busy work (every other week or weekly) and not to mention observing hours that you have to collect on your OWN time. Very monotone and dull lectures that span for hours. Worst part of all I'm no longer interested in astronomy because of this class. Way too much for a gen-ed.
The subject matter gets a bit dense at times, but overall I felt like the videos and lectures, and especially the textbook (we used the one written by the Astronomy department itself) were very interesting and helpful. Assignments are reasonable and as long as you show you've put forth effort, you'll do well.
Good course! Good instructor! I had to laugh at one review. Complained about not being able to cheat on exams?? LOL He doesn't take attendance, but if you don't show up, I don't think you will do well. More math than I expected on labs, but everything is laid out so that it is very doable.
Took it in the summer! LOTS of material in a short span. Fortunately, being retired, I had the time to dedicate to the class. He goes beyond the normal stuff and shows where a lot of the deep mysteries are. I was pleasantly surprised. If you can read and follow the study guide, do the reading, and attend lectures and labs, one will do fine.
It was a hard course to take in the summer, but I learned alot. I had health issues and Dr. Koch worked with me. I would recommend this professor and this course.
The class was structured very clearly. It was a full semester of information jammed into a month (I took in the winter) but I learned tons. It really helped that I don't have a job so I was able to spend all my time on it. The tests were open book/notes/internet but they tested your understanding more than memorization. Great class, he seemed nice.
I took this class over winter session. It seemed NUTS to cover so much material in a such a short time, but it was surprisingly doable and not as hard as I expected. I didn't see a tag for organization. Kochs class was very organized, which helped alot!
Professor Koch was an awesome professor. I took this course online as an accelerated course and honestly it felt as if it was the perfect pace. You could work ahead if you wanted to the criteria was interesting. You ndo need to set aside a good chunk of time to read and watch videos, mostly watch videos. Koch gave back awesome feedback too!
Best teacher Ive had at JCCC.
I panicked when the covid-19 virus forced the class to go completely online. I didn't think I could do an online class. More than my other professors, Professor Koch patiently worked with me and got me going. Classes aren't over yet, but thanks to him, I am much more confident with doing online courses. Thank you!
I took him for an online lab class because of covid. He said it was his first time with online labs, and there were some errors here and there, but if you read instructions, they go fine. He gave fast feedback about errors and lab questions. It usually helped. Quizzes are pretty easy. Observing assignments can be a pain sometimes.
I was suprised how doable online labs were. The teacher was always helpful to answer questions I had. I didn't like the observing that much, though it did make things more real. I wish I had a telescope.
Amazing class. Amazing Professor. Didn't like the powerpoint narration, but everything else was high quality and organized! I wish there was a next level there at JCCC.
Do it! It's awesome!
Never would have passed if the instructor wasnt so helpful. Cool subject, but glad to get it behind me. Thanks prof!
I took this class during covid but I hear in person this class is fun. This does not feel like a fundamentals class. We were calculating the nuclear fusion of the sun and trying to understand the quantum and string theory. He doesn't lecture either, he just gave us Youtube videos to watch,I got an A so it' possible, but this was by far a hard class
Professor Koch tends to be very strict on grading. He says this is due to his desire for "fairness," but I think his definition of fairness is "sameness" as opposed to "being just." He also didn't seem to give students the benefit of the doubt. For these reasons, I wouldn't recommend Professor Koch. That being said, he responded to email quickly.
I thought the class structure and the instructor were quite good. I've had other online science classes and it seemed pretty typical as far as difficulty. I'm an older student, so I had to laugh at some of the criticism some students made. I agree about the videos. Welcome to college kiddos!
My counselors said this would be an easy science class, so I wasn't expecting it to be very interesting. It wasn't THAT easy, but it was way cooler than I thought. It took more time than I expected, so make sure you make time for all the work. There's a no late work policy. I missed some assignments, which hurt, but I'm glad I took it.
This was my favorite class so far. It wasn't perfect. I think labs would have been better had we been on campus to do them, but covid prevented that. I wish discussions had remained open after the due date for continued discussions. Professor Koch seems passionate about astronomy and cares for students.
I was surprised by the total amount of time required for the course along with how in depth the topics were covered. His study guides really helped prepare for the tests and his labs provided a lot of guidance on the really difficult calculations. Overall, Bill is a gem of a professor.
I took astronomy over winter break. I had some issues and needed to finish class early. Professor Koch worked with me and helped me finish. He definitely cares about his students. Expect to be busy if you take it in a 4 week term. It felt rushed and I wish I had more time to spend on some topics.
Took the lab version of the class. Lab groups were useless because guys in my group never communicated. The labs weren't too bad for a first run. The professor gave very quick responses to emails and discussions. I like that we didn't have to set aside certain times to do stupid zoom lectures.
Koch is structured & organized. I did not expect the Lab course to be so math-heavy. Not a difficult course as long as you have a basic understanding of algebra. This was a great class to meet that requirement. No extra credit options. Tests start out easy and get gradually more difficult. Great study guides provided to prepare for tests.
This is a very hard class and I would not take again or tell anyone to take. The Professor gives these awful google slide videos with the very hard to listen to google translate voice. He is very hard on grading and be prepared to pretty much teach yourself.
He is probably the most condescending teacher I have ever had at JCCC and I have taken multiple years worth of classes. Class in general isn't that difficult but he is a very tough grader. He wants it his way and won't really listen to what you have to say in emails. I do not believe the stuff we are expected to learn in his class is intro level.
One of the worst professors you can take at JCCC. The class is supposed to be an intro course but it is anything but. He criticizes everything and if it isn't up to his standards, be ready to lose points regardless of how thorough you have been. He is condescending and is a tough grader. Online course, find most answers on quizlet.
Before I posted, I read the last comments. I am assuming we weren't in the same section? The class seems to be on par with what I expected for a freshman science class, though taking online wouldn't have been my first choice. Dang covid! I agree that the slides could use a human voice. Hard or not, I learned a lot!
I wasn't sure about the online labs, but they went pretty well, without any problems. I had fun using the telescope, though there were only 3 assignments using it. Like me, most who posted here found the teacher helpful and pleasant and I ask alot of questions.
I just needed a C to tranfer the credits which was pretty easy. He answers questions fast and is willing to work with you if something goes wrong. My computer crashed during an exam and he helped me out. The textook isn't all that great, but he once mentioned that they are thinking about changing it soon. Good instructor and good class!
This was my first class at JCC, so I can't compare him to other instructors but he seemed fine to me. Its hard to say much since I never actually met him. His grading seemed fair. You learn a lot. In an email he mentioned that he was overhauling the class with a new free textbook and new videos. Didn't like the old videos.
The subject is intresting and the class isn't all that hard. Don't let your advisor tell you its easy though, like mine did. The instructor responds to questions quickly. He seemed to care about students succeeding.
One of the best professors at JCC!
The textbook seemed a bit like high school level but the videos were a bit more advanced. It's probably a nice intro to the subject for most. Dr. Koch also provides his own additional material and videos that kinda get into the meat of many topics. Overall pretty easy.
Good class!
This took alot more work than I thought it would. Labs and assignments are pretty straight forward though. I didn't do as well on the exams as I would have liked, but the scores on other work carried me through. It was interesting, but maybe not good for some during summer.
I've taken a few science classes at JCCC and it seemed pretty on par with what I expected, even though its online. It was certainly the most organized class I've had. Dr. Koch said the setup had been redone and there were a few issues. He more than made up for those to help students. I may take his lab class next.
Very difficult to work with, and very disappointed by that. Almost makes me want to change my major. Very much a 'professor' (a holder of a degree) and not a 'teacher'.
The class wasn't an easy A for sure. I learned a lot. I won't be changing my major to astronomy, but I was inspired to join ASKC to learn more and have some fun and put my knowledge to work.
When i signed up I expected there to be scheduled lectures on zoom. I found out that I took what the college classifies as an "online" class, which has no scheduled meetings. If you want to have a class with zoom lectures, you need to sign up for an "online hybrid" section. It went fine and the class was well organized. I missed the interaction.
Good professor, really fun class.
I liked that the textbook was free and I could purchase a $10 APple books version for my iPad. We also get a free telescope to use in observing labs. We also got to keep them! I would have also liked to have looked through the bigger telescopes at school.
Prof Koch is great. He ensures that his students learn the material and definitely keeps it interesting. He utilizes awesome lectures from another school and definitely sets the class up so you will learn and are prepared for exams. You have to work for it, but he is very involved/available even with online style. Pass with effort and completion.
Professor Koch is willing to admit when he messes up, and he genuinely cares about the subject, so he is a good teacher in that regard, but do not take his courses unless you are prepared to do a truly obscene amount of work. If you work night shifts or have any sort of other responsibilities, this class is not for you.
Took it over the 4-week winter session and WOW! The professor said we covered everything that was in a regular semester and it felt like it! Fortunately, stuff was laid out nicely and all I had to do was follow the schedule and do what was on it. I liked the class, but wish I could have spent more time with it. I've already forgotten a lot.
I was suprised at how doable the labs were in this class. They might be easier in person, but definitely doable. I WAS surprised at how many topics we covered, some were very cool...or hot! I laughed when I read someones complaint about it being too much work. For a lab class, this was nothing! Wait til you get to somewhere like KU! ; )
THeres lots of assignments, but hey its a lab class! They aren't too hard. Koch definitely tends to enforce the "no late work" policy, but he will listen and work with you if you approach him with a valid issue. I was dealing with illness and had some issues.
I took this class because I needed some credits but I ended up learning a lot through Professor Koch. It's clear that he loves astronomy by the way he teaches as he has detailed videos and lectures for every module and provides excellent informational feedback. He also understands the topic is difficult and is lenient on assignments when needed.
This was online Although platforms for student and teacher interaction are integrated into the class, they aren't used much by students. Instructor communication was mostly using announcements and assignment feedback. If you don't get a telescope, you will lose points on some assignments, but I did okay and still got a good grade not buying one.
Wow! There was a lot more to astrology that I expected! Seems like a lot for one class, but the instructor was good and his course was set up nicely. Don't dare fall behind if you take it during the summer! Looking back, I did learn a lot. It definitely made the JWST mission and images mean more to me!
There is a lot of work, as I figured since this is also for lab credit. I only needed a C to transfer the credit, so it wasn't all that hard. Just get the work done.
This class was just what I needed to transfer Gned credit and only needed a C. It was pretty easy and the professor has stuff set up so its pretty easy to follow what to do. I may take the lab class someday.
Pretty easy
Professor said this was the first 120 class offered face to face. I think it might be harder as an online class, but I enjoyed the face to face interaction. I learned a lot. I want to get my Nobel Prize now!
Easy class to pass online. I needed to complete a few science credits and this was an easy way to get a credit. There are alot of articles and videos he links but you don't have to watch them all to be able to pass. Only 1-3 assignments were assigned each week which was a nice light work load.
Seemed like alot of work, but I guess it is a science class and lab. Pretty easy to pass with a c and gte transfer credit.
I took a class with Professor Smith last semester and thought he was an excellent teacher. He explained things well and was always approachable if I needed help. I would definitely recommend him as a professor.
I had a really positive experience in Professor Koch's class. I found Koch to be knowledgeable and engaging, he helped me get through the labs. While I wouldn't say the class was easy, I do think that Koch was a great instructor who made the subject matter more interesting than it might have been otherwise.
Professor Koch was a nice professor. His exams were difficult but he does provide a study guide for all of them. The textbook is free! You can do the majority of the homework assignments over and over until you get 100%. I recommend this class for a science/math credit! Much easier than other options.
I like how the professor gets right back to you when you have questions. I didn't see the class being all that hard, but there's quite a bit of work, especially the labs. I wasn't sure how online labs would work out, but it wasn't bad. If I hadn't taken the class during summer, it probably would have been even easier.
This is a really good online astronomy class and was laid out very cleary on what needed to be done by the due date. However, there was a lot of them, but it's manageable and there are unlimited attempts on the concept questions!
Some of the labs are challenging in the beginning but seem to get easier. Unlimited attempts on concept questions. Professor can come across condescending at times.
I accidentally signed up for the accelerated version of this class, and it was the bane of my existence. It definitely negatively impacted my grades in my other classes. There is simply too much information, and homework for it to be an 8 week course. Most of the comments seem positive so I assume the accelerated aspect is what made it difficult.
Like what a previous person the labs seem a bit harder at the beginning. It may be that there are more of them early on. Overall he gave me helpful feedback on many assignments.I like the fact that he sometimes curves the exams.
Hes got a funny sence of humor, which helps with 2h lectures. He throws in some short group work to answer questions which also breaks things up a bit. Great class!
Professor Koch was amazing and kind. I fell behind on an exam and he messaged me to check on me! Labs can be difficult but you get two tries to fix your mistakes and his quizzes are so easy as long as you do the practice ones. would recommend him
There is a lot of busy work, but it is a lab, and very interesting!! You'll cover A LOT of material. Labs are fun and straightforward, and lectures are long (death by PowerPoint), but Koch is funny and keeps it interesting. Be prepared to do observing hours at night at various locations, and use his slides during class to take notes on.
I would rate Professor Koch 5 out of 5. His class is well-organized, exams are fair, and grading is consistent. He responds quickly to emails and provides helpful feedback. Overall, I highly recommend him.
Professor Koch is really knowledgeable and explains things in a way that makes astronomy easier to understand and interesting.
Professor Koch is a huge science nerd. This is a fun course and he is a fun guy. There is a lot of reading and class is lecture heavy - so be prepared for that. You will learn a lot. Don't be afraid to ask questions because he can be unclear sometimes. Attendance is 100% for a grade. If you don't show up you will fail.
Professor Koch's AST122 is well-organized with fair exams. The labs are a bit challenging but manageable. Unstuck AI proved helpful for study prep. Overall, a good class worth taking.
There IS a textbook, but honestly I went the whole course without it. The lectures are super in depth and engaging, and I don't recommend skipping. There's one group project, a few observing sessions, and the grading is divided pretty evenly between HW, tests, labs, and so on. Prof. Koch is great, definitely passionate about his field. 10/10.
Not what I expected for a fundamentals course. Death by lectures which are just a ton of youtube videos. All homework was due on one day of the week which was nice. Concept quizzes you were able to take over again until you got a perfect score. Test are timed, for example you have a 50 question exam and 1 hour to do it but they are open book exams
Very funny and passionate about his work, lectures can feel long at some points but the content is interesting, if you're an astronomy person. Will need to work with group-mates for labs, but labs are very easy, he gives you everything you need. Labs take maybe half an hour.
Fun lectures with lots of depth. Seems pretty mellow except when it comes to due dates. He's pretty strict. Pay attention to when stuff is due.
Great professor, enjoyed the class. It is a lab, so there was a lot of assignments- roughly 5-8 assignments due per week. 81 total grades for this semester.. Was not too hard- some assignments were more complicated than others!
Professor Koch replies to questions quickly and keeps the workload pretty manageable. His open-book exams make it easier to focus on actually learning the material instead of just memorizing.
If I knew how much physics there was, I may have been to afraid to take the class. But Dr. Koch made it doable and Im glad I took it. I know how to use my calculator now! LOL
The professor does a lot of powerpoints but they are pretty decent so not too bad. Thank god he makes them available because he sometimes goes rather quickly. He gives groups questions to answer during lecture. That and his dry wit break things up a bit. He's one of the coolest professors I've had at JCCC.
