He's a good teacher. His exams may be challenging at times.
You should take his class!
If you love math, avoid him. Extremely elementary presentation.
he's awful..AVOID HIM
Nice, takes attendance daily, very nitpicky grader, I got a C and KNOW calc!
i got an A only because i knew the stuff tsr.. don't take if math is a challange for you.. his exams are pretty strange
He is a good math teacher. His tests are extremily easy, however he is a very nitpicky, annoying gradder and will take off points for anal reasons. Take him, but be extra careful when taking his tests to do it the way he wants you to. He also gave E.C.
AVOID THIS GUY. HE GAVE AN EVALUATION THE FIRST DAY TO SEE WHAT WE KNEW AND HE GRADES IT, RETURNS IT WITH A CODE. THE CODE IS PASS/FAIL. HE BASICALLY TELLS YOU THAT WILL EITHER PASS OR FAIL RIGHT OFF THE BAT.
wonderful teacher! isn't afraid to get questions from students, he encourages questions! anything you don't understand he'll help you with itmayb not in class, but go see him in his office and he'll help you with anything!
hard class...not an easy A. explains material well although its right out of the book. takes daily attendance, very strict policy on absences. very nitpicky grader on exams...youll lose a lot of points on minor things.
Has a bad attitude. Afraid to go over problems not specifically assigned on homework. While other students could benefit from explanations, he insists you go to his office.
HARD. Only take him if you've gotten As in your previous Calculus classes. He is ANAL about grading and will take off points for the most rediculous reasons. You have been warned!
great teacher, you will not regret taking him his lectures are very clear and laid out nicely...his tests are very easy but be careful not to make dumb mistakes...he is also a nice but shy guy...
The worst teacher I have ever had. He does not know how to teach OR grads the exams... do not even think about taking his class.

konya rocks! becareful not to make dumb mistakes on exams!
DUN TAKE HIM!! My friend got an A for his math 8 but got C for his math 11.. And i experience it myself.... u have been warned
great teacher, easy tests, but hard grader
he's easy to get a "c" on tests if you study, makes it hard to get a "b" or "a". probably the worst math teacher ive had.
I would not recommend him, maybe those of you whose strongest subject is math may not have such difficulty, but to the rest of you-find someone else. Very dry personality, and does not explain the problems like a math teacher should.
Konya is "behind the times." He doesn't have a webpage, sample exams for his students, or pretty much else. His teaching is okay, but that does not make up for his other deficiencies.
If you want to ruin your transicip, take him. Lazy teacher, hard grader. Boring class. Worst teacher. I just don't understand why he can still teach in SMC. He doesn't carry about his job, let alone his students and their grades.
This teacher sucks!! I don't know how I ended up taking his class. First of all, if you are the kind of person who is late one minute to class, then don't take him! What kind of college teacher would take row call the entire semester and mark you off if you are late? The worse teacher.
Great teacher, but very hard grader. Konya knows his stuff...but when it comes to grading and test he's tough... class averages on past 3 tests have been 60, 63, 71. This is a class you will have to work your butt of in. Absence policy sucks also.
take math 11 with zakeri....u can not get an A in this class cuz he is a very very very very...bad grader!
If you want to know the math very well, take Konya, but if you need an A, you better do perfect on the tests. Questions on tests are not hard, but he is a strict grader. I will say that he tells you exactly what he expects and you CAN get an A if you listen.
His exams look really simple and easy; however, he always catches your minor mistakes to turn your grade from an A to an C. It's true ... he's the hardest grader ever!
He is a great professor who makes you understand a REAL math. Although his grading is picky, i think he is fair and i am planning to take math8.
His tests seem that not difficult. His teaching is OK. But he is hard on grading. So, you must follow his steps totally. Sometimes, I followed his steps, he still didn't give me the points. If you take his tests, I will say "Good luck!" to you.
his class is a math grammmar class. oops did i spell that wrong. Wouldn't recommend him as he teaches right from the book. God even i can read the book at home. Just to let you know, his tests have 5 questions, 50 min. so if you mess up one of the first three you go from an A to a C. Don't take him.
If the other teachers teaching the same course all suck, then take this guy. Attendance is key. Write down every step he does n perhaps u'll do well on his exams. Tests are short n easy but u have to thoroughly explain how u got the answer in words etc or u wont get much credit. not recommended.
wondering why he can teach at smc, he should go back to high school....the suckiest professor....
Don't waste your time with this class. Class started with 40, and went down to 4 by the 3rd test where everyone but the 4 *Steriotypically* insanely math capable asians had a C or below. A guy who had already taken the class and got a 3 on his AP calc test was getting a D. Unless u like W's,stayaway
when i read other comments, it made me scared to take his class but i actually really like his class. he isnt the easiest teacher but now i actually understand calc. he is very clear. i think you will learn a lot from him and if u really go to class and actually listen, you can definitely get an A
This guy is sooo boring... i can't sit and listen to his monotone voice all in one sitting. He repeats the same things over and over and over... I would not recomend him at all unless you just want a class that will put you to sleep!
i wrote a comment before saying how he was a good teacher..and he is..but he's so hard...he marks points off for everything! trust me..his test are tricky
People... Avoid him.. really.. The class started with 40 people and only 17 survived. He is a professor with no humanity. I dont know why he is eaching at the college. People who dropped his class is not stupid, he is making everyone leave his class. I think he enjoys when students suffer.
well, at least he is hot.
excellent professor! teaches clearly and encourages questions/curiousity, accessible, very friendly, strict grader, challenging, very thorough, methodical amd organized
Im sorry did I forget to put an equal sign of my test ohhh you mean I got a C instead of an A now thank buddy.
He may no his stuff, but don't no how for explain... AVOID!
He is the hardest grader I have even seen. I love math, I love solving problems. He knows the subject very well and he is a nice guy. He downgrades you for everything big time. I hardly got C in his class, although in all other math classes I had A's. More than half of the class drop at the beggining of the semmester. I would not reccomend him.
I never liked math...and it doesn't help when the most monotone speaking person in the world is lecturing. I felt myself getting stupider rather than smarter...and he's really strict about attendance..you can only miss like 4 classes and each tardy is 1/2 an absense. He has a dry personality! ! ! Boring professor + Boring subject =WASTE OF MY LIFE!
Most boring teacher ever. No sense of humor. I actually like math and almost fell asleep every class. The tests are only six questions and they are ridiculous. He is a very strict grader. If you don't put a money sign, he marks off so many points. The good thing is that he is helpful and willing to answer any questions, even if they are dumb.
I would not recommend taking this class or any class for that matter with this professor if you need to get an "A". The tests are each worth 25% of your grade and are only 8 questions. On two tests I got every question correct but only got 90 out of 100 because of writing "equals" signs when I should have written "is"????? Impossible to get an A.
I think getting an "A" in the class is out of the question for non-math majors. As a matter of fact, a "B" is pretty distant too. Fortunately, a test is dropped and some leniency is granted on the final, so you can do OK. Prof. Konya is a pretty good teacher for math, just the course is difficult for those fulfilling IGETC. Its math... good luck.
Worst math teacher I've ever had. I got D's and C's on the tests because he would mark off the dumbest things. If you missed one multiple choice questinon, you got at least a 90%. This guy was an idiot by the way. he thought he was hott and definitely was not. He actually failed me! I had a 67% average and did not miss a class. Don't take him!!!!!!
GET OUT OF HIS CLASS NOW!Hes 1 of the worst math teachers Ive ever had. He's extremely boring & constantly repeats himself when explaining the assignments. He also drops you after a certain # of absences. I strongly suggest dropping this class asap!
wow.i dropped him on the first day, boring not very approachable.i may not be a math genius but i do know that math doesn't have to be like this.i signed up for fagerland and walked in to find this stereotypical math teacher.the lecture was pretty repetative.i felt like i was being punished with boredom.i'll skip math this semester thanks to him.
It's no accident everyone says the same thing, GET OUT NOW! This guy takes off points if you erase your mistakes and he can still see them. I had to drop my first class ever. Save your money and get out.
THE WORST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD. He takes joy in explaining things in THE MOST complicated way. Takes points off for work even if your answer is correct. I had to drop the class. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER.
This guy sucks! Why do you assign 4 sections of work and only explain 2? Oh, that makes sooooo much sense!
Smart guy, really knows his stuff. If you're not self-motivated, you won't do very well. First time I ever got worse than a 'B' in math. Repeat: Don't take him if you aren't self-motivated.
He is a terrible teacher. Math is his career, his life so instead of teaching the BASIC BOTTOM LINE math, he teaches lofty, conceptual theoretical math. the most nazi grading EVER. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
4 Tests, drops lowest. About 10 Q's each, Given Q's and you show your work. Takes off pts for not using equal signs or not circling your answer. Q's are straight out of the book from the examples of the chapters. Average.
This guy shouldn't even be teaching. If you are even thinking about taking this class, don't even bother signing up. He gave me an F and I showed up to every class, took notes, did all homework, studied my ass off, understood most of the material. I've never gotten an F in my life...The tests are 10 questions. impossible. Grading is ridiculous.
I loved Calculus before taking this class...-.-! I got As in previous clssses...this class is not easy at all....If you want to get an A, don't take it.
i don't know why u guys hate him soo much.. but i think he is the BEST math professor in SMC, he explain things STEP BY STEP, and his english is soooo good (it's his main language - definitely better than foreign professor). He speaks very clearly, not so fast and you're going to learn a lottt better in his class..
Konya is the best math teacher i've ever had in SMC. I hated him at first because he's too picky, but right now, when i'm taking math 8 with another prof, i fell konya is VERY nice. he explains things clearly, it definitely has complete steps. His voice IS monotone, but STILL his class will definitely make you comfortable in learning math! take HIM!
not RECOMMENDED!
DONOT GIVE A TEST GRADE BEFORE DROP DUE DATE STUDENT AVERAGE IS 60
take his class if u want to GET F
Prof. Konya is definetly a real good teacher. He is very picky when grading the exams, but it's reasonable since the exams are always no more than 8 Q's. He does explain STEP BY STEP which is good if you haven't taken math in a long time. Just do ALL the HW and never be late or absent and you'll do good.
He's good at teaching, but he's really strict in grading your test. First time you'll feel he is really good, but after you feel the test, you will changed your mind. If you take him: Don't be late(too much late, he'll consider you absent), SHUT UP your mouth(his ear can't be disturbed),and try not to absent(He's strict and nerdy).
He's a great teacher and lecturer. But he's a terrible grader, and very unreasonable at times. I learned a lot in the class, and I ended up with a D. He takes off tons of points on exams if you don't show work exactly how he wants, even if you get the right answer. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone, even though he is a nice guy.
On the first day of class, Konya told the students that this would not be an easy class and that "for some of you, this might be the hardest math class you've taken." Indeed it was for me, thanks to his horrendous grading policy. The entire grade is based on tests; he doesn't collect homework or anything else. This means that your grade is based so
One very dry person... Not funny, not interesting, but he explanis everything and has a very good approach to explaining math. However, his tests are not that easy and grading policy is extremely tight. I got an A in the class because I studied and went to every class but I would never take his class again.
Good at explaining. Helpful if you ask for help. Tests were ridiculous. I think 1 or 2 people got an A in the class. I came on ratemypro before I signed up for the class, and wish I would have listened. Marks down for not labeling graphs, not writing answers correctly, but also gives points just for trying! I wouldn't recommend taking this class.
Only new college students fall for taking this absurd class. Never ever..(x100) take his class if your not a geek. takes off points on everything.. attendance(you are drop w/ a F if you're absent 8 times. tardy is half of an absent thats x2 equals 16 tardys). takes off points for absurd reasons..doesn't care at all for his students. selfish.boring.
This man is the most boring person alive. Everyday i would have rather shot myself in the head then go to his class. Some people say he is good at explaining things. Well he should be, because he uses the books examples. He is a talking text book. No personality. Might as-well take the class online. Take my advice, STAY AWAY! haha I hate him!
This teacher is horrible. He teaches like its high school and takes points off even if u are 1 min late. DO not take is class. However, he does not assign any homework but BORING AND ITS BETTER READING THE TEXT cause he uses poblems out the the text
Monotone. Extremely boring. Very anal on attendance and tardiness. Takes points off every little mistake on a test. No homework.
Even tought I already knew everything he was teaching, I couldn't get A, because he just wants everything to be perfect, if u r handwriting is not good. Do NoT taKe him. He will just cut u r point on the exam, if u miss a letter or word. so weird. he gets lost if u ask a question that is not assogned or he didn't have time to prepare...
I felt helpless and doomed to failure and if not for my TUTORS I would never have come close and may not yet!His tests are totally unpredicatable and tough.
If u have a tiny mistake such as letter or word on the test, u will lose ur point. DO NOT TAKE HIM if u want to get A. No hw and quiz.
oh, it is true what you guys seeing in the above comments, he is so bad in grading!!! even you had all solution correct, you wont get a perfect point, because he take some point of non reason!!!if you wanna have a A in his class, just copy exectly from the book, but for my opinion it is not math then, in math, we can have my way to do/solution.BAD!!
he is kinda weird..he didn't explain into details most of the time..he always wants us to solve the problem the same way as him..always put a clear explanation on the problem..he takes off point just from an unclear writing or symbols..his exams are mostly around what he taught us..read a lot of the examples from the book..he might use it for exam.
DO NOT TAKE! He is friendly, clear and his tests are easy but don't get fooled. You can have no mathematical mistakes at all and still get bumped down to B. He grades on form. Must be "his" way. His mathematical expertise is very limited too, he doesn't understand some concepts form i.e. MATH10. Not a lot of occasions to see that, still, shocking.
the WORST, ONLY 1person got A, another 1person got B, rest of them are C, D and F.. doesnt make sense
Hard to connect to, a teacher with an obvious knowledge of the subject but no enthusiasm and no charisma.
Horrible teacher. All lectures are taken directly from the book. Test questions are either problems from the book, or examples in the book. Even if you arrive at the answer correctly, he will mark you down for either not showing enough work, not doing it his way, or missing degree symbols in your work. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE.
Very Impersonal. Cold and not good at taking questions and helping understand.
Horrible experience, horrible teacher..It's possible to get the correct answer on tests and still get a low grade because he will not agree with how you showed your work. He only grades the tests and gives limited help to understand the material. He is also just a weird guy.
The guy isnt that bad.I think he has a good white voice and doesnt give a darn who you are and really does explain what u want explained.Ask him a question and he'll answer and teach it like a proper professor should.Take this guy over Wong.Keep in mind that Askirian is the best teacher to get even though he teaches at a horrible time aka 10 pm =(
I really wanted to like this teacher, but the comments about his grading are all true. He's sort of smug, and has this George Bush look expression pretty often (although I think he hates him). It's the only class that I've gotten a B in at SMC so far, and I tried pretty hard. He seems like a typical math teacher to me, all in all.
grades like some kind of machine and wants perfection. miss a problem and its on grade down for u.he is very good at teaching cause he writes lots of notes on board and i think you learn a lot by copying every single thing. some things he could teacher better though. sometimes he goes too brief on things.for ex:he taught 1st derivative in 5 min. =/
I was one of the most active students, he even knew me by name. However, I was late a few times by 2-3 mins. He counted them all as absences because unlike every other math class I've ever had he apparently cares if you come late. He dropped me. What kind of teacher does something like that? The kind that cares about his ego more than my education.
He grades really badly...it doesnt matter how hard yoyu try!!!!!!!!!! I have never got a B in any Maths class and I have a B in his class...and I tried extra hard...he's not after how much you learn but after how much he can take off your paper....basically, don't take him!
yes,Konya is extremely cold and impersonal, but after all he's there to teach, not to get chummy with students. This is college,so don't expect him to reach out to you and hold ur hand, show Konya that ure honestly trying to improve your grade and he'll be very helpful. BTW, don't waste ur time kissing butt, it doesn't help.
Although I think he's a good teacher, knowing the subject doesn't really matter on his tests. Even though I showed work and got the right answers, I still got a D. He'll take points off for every small thing. These things are important, but I've never been good at that kind of precision outside of proofs. Most of the class dropped. Avoid him.
I had Mr. Konya for Math 7 and 11. If you want an easy A you won't get it from him, but you'll learn a heck of a lot. Everything I've read about him on this site is true: He's tough, he's cold, he's not very approachable but he's a hell of a teacher and I highly recommend him.
perhaps one of the easiest teachers out there to teach this material, even though he isnt that easy. gives great notes. i highly recommend him because he's a good teacher. if u want an A in math11 then perhaps you have lil to slightly higher chance of gettin it by getting this guy
He grades way too hard. I understood the subject, solved all the problems correctly... and got a 51% on the first test. If you miss a small part of a problem prepare to lose 80% of the points on that problem. He's good at teaching; he'll teach you a lot, but his classes are boring. He seems kind of smug and distant from his students.
Let me tell you one thing about this teacher. he almost ruined my college life! UNLESS you are very good at calculus, NEVER take him. he explains clearly, has a good personaity, but grades wayyy to hard. u have to follow his steps or prepare to lose at least 20 points in a test. trust me, u dont wanna take him unless you are great at math. serious!
He teaches the material well but will destroy you on tests. All final answers were correct but I still got a 70% for things like writing too small (even though my writing is about the same size as that of the textbook) and other factors that do not effect the final answer. Stay away from this class
I feel hopeless and helpless.
God...bless us. This class is too hard even though most students are good at math 32. His grading is not clear and so hard. Don't take his class and waste your time especially international students. He is the worst teacher in SMC !!!!
rate 1
A good teacher, but he is seriously a Grading Nazi! He takes off points for everything, like not drawing graphs even when the instructions don't mention it. Does offer some extra credit though for the AMATYC though. I don't know if anyone got an A.
Almost impossible get "A". He's a grading Nazzi. Takes off points for everything. I got all the numerical answers right, and still got only 78 because I didnt show the individual steps. The only B that I ever got in SMC.
I'd say hes the hardest grader of any of the Math professors at SMC. However, he is a great teacher. He does a wonderful job of explaining the material.
Easy, yes. Ridiculous, yes. Just study your homework and all of the examples, the test come straight from the homework and examples. Even the proofs. Carefully show the answer, even the tiny thing like parenthesis. Great professor
Theres no point in denying it, the man is a genius, but it is extremely hard to pass the 4 out of 5 exams that make up all the points in your class grade. Each exam has about 7-10 Q's. The class is more like a math grammar class. Regardless if you get the queations right, he still takes points off for improper phrases and expressions used in ans.
distant from his students. really hard
HARDEST GRADER I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE.
Very difficult class. An A is doable, but you'll need to spend a couple hours a night -- consistently. Homework is gone over, but not collected. Only grades are 4 exams (lowest dropped), and the final. He is particular about your work, and may not reward you with points if you use the "wrong" method or notation. Knows the stuff, hard to get to.
Extremely hardd class!
Exams questions come from book examples, assigned problems and his lecture. So memorize every detail(important) the book provide and his notes you will be fine. He spends too much time in the upper half of course but rush at the end. He should spend more time in last chapter(18). Like other said: gives Easy exams but a hard grader
I got an A with close to perfect grade. HERE IS THE TIP: Literary memorize the chapters that are covered before the exam. Do all homeworks and have no questions before the exam. His tests are 100% from book, which is VERY FAIR. He gives something that is not on book for exam questions.!!
I got an A with very close to 100% and im not genius. HERE IS THE TIP: Literary memorize the chapters that are covered, dso all homeworks and have no(zero/none) questions before the exam. His tests are 100% from book(~90%)/notes(~10%) which is VERY FAIR. He NEVER gives something that is not on book/notes for exam questions.!!
Decent Math Teacher. It only blame that subject. The grade is solely based on the 4 exams and final, but he drops the lowest exam. Study for a "A". I study like crazy and got a "B". I even done my homework twice. In the beginning, the test question will contain some homework questions. Eventually, that fades away. The course does get easier. Once t
also took math 15. these are really hard classes, stop blaming the teacher, If you want a perfect 4.0 GPA dont take these classes, there are psych and speech classes waiting for you! If the subject fits you (math) you will do well regardless of the teacher. DONE
Possibly the best math teacher I've had, very clear concise and diplomatic during lectures. His exam questions are straight from the book or lecture notes. He expects that you are responsible for demonstrating your comprehension as taught during class so pay attention to details! This is why many people say he grades too harshly.
The truth is he is a hard grader, even your answer is right,he still take off point from minor mistake such as poor writing and that pull your grade down.Take the final if u don't want F.At only not enough 20 people in the end. If you love math, this class is for you. But if u are not, stay away(although all math 7 teachers are the same-bad)
Probably the best lecturer i've ever had, but extremely hard grading. he will take more points off for poor handwriting and organization than wrong answer. easy midterm tests, hard final. just know how to do all odd problems in each section and you can quite easily get an A, if you can comply with his format
I guess he thinks himself as a mathematician, but he is not a good teacher at all. Firstly, he often make careless mistake and logical fallacies in class. Secondly, the way he design exam paper is unprecedented, he gives only 5 questions, never tell u the weight of each question.he only care about if u did the exact same method as he used.
He expalins the material pretty well in class but often makes several careless mistakes that a math teacher of this respect shouldn't be. The tests are honestly rediculous. He takes off points for anything and everythig. If the work you got to get an answer doesn't match exactly how he taught it don't expect to get full credit..Ever.
He is ridiculously challenging. He moves through the chapters very quick and isn't that helpful. You HAVE to be in class everyday to take notes because his tests are based on the notes. Although the test problems are from notes, he grades very hard. He deducts even the slightest mistake. I couldn't stand his teaching. I had to drop him!
If you keep up with homework and turn it in you'll know what he wants for the exam. He does deduct point for missing things on the exam. Bring your questions to class and he'll answer them for you. Very nice guy. Attention: Exams are not easy, you have to study. He's very helpful overall.
- Explains well - Not friendly, but very polite - Questions on exams are not hard and a good 75% are taken directly from the examples or exercises in the textbook - Extremely harsh grader, will take points off for the most ridiculous reasons - It is possible to get all answers right, get all the work right and still get a B - HARD FINAL!!!
konya gave me my first B. his lectures are very orgranized, which i like, but he grades too harshly. he takes off points if you don't do the problem exactly like he did it in class. definitely go to his office hours and ask questions. he will try to explain til you get it. he definitely is one of the big 3 at smc. be prepared to study ur buns off!
Horrible teacher! Don't take him. Makes mistakes in lectures and his grading is ridiculous! A lot of people failed the class. You have to memorize the steps to the problems, that's the only way to get full credit. I've enjoyed math until I took his class.
Konya instructs his class according to a strict schedule using a fundamentals approach, and you are tested on exactly that - so you should not expect any surprises on the exams if you pay full attention to every homework problem assigned (homework not mandatory). Very charming, well spoken guy with a smooth voice. I received an A.
Essentially a memorization class with loads of algebraic manipulation involved. Write down everything and pay full attention to all homework problems (not mandatory). Decent understanding of the course's content will go a long way for you as well. I received an A.
He is one of the best math professors I've ever had and I've had some really great ones. The reason he has a really bad rating is because it's a very tough class. He lectures very clearly and is not intimidating what so ever. He's a genuinely nice guy and really interested in helping his students learn. NOT an easy A or B. I worked hard to get a B!
Mr. Konya is a great teacher that is excellent in lecturing and explaining notes for each topic learned; however, to get at least a B in this class you must study at least 2-3 hours a day or more. I got an A, but I sometimes struggled tremendously in trying to understand the material taught, so it is a good idea to ask questions if you have any.
Stay away! Do yourself a big favor. Rate 1. Very distant with his students, doesn't care about your success. In fact, I'm convinced he wants you to fail. Tests are HARD, his grading is the WORST. Stay away at all costs
His grading is the worst. He expects you to be a mathematician when taking tests and be able to explain EVERY SINGLE STEP!!! Although the answer is right he takes off points if you don't explain how you got there or if you skip a step. Doesn't accept late work and doesn't grade work that is not stapled. Definitely DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM!
Take him if you want an easy B or C. Do not take him if you want to get A. He just takes so much points off out of your handwriting and inconsequential stuff which are not related to math. Even if you write all steps down and get the right answer, he will find a way to take off points. The mid-term exams are supers easy, but he's grading: horrible
Excellent teacher! Difficult but worth it because I understand math much better than I had previously. His lessons are clear and is helpful. 4 test and final exam and homework everyday.
Extremely tough grader to the point that it is ludicrous. You will hand in an exam with every problem correct and get back a 78. Literally. Takes off points if your apostrophes after y' are not diagonal enough or if the lines on your equal sign aren't parallel enough. I know it sounds like a bad joke but it isn't, AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
his classes are pretty good. Actually, you will understand all the material that he teaches, clear and precise. However, at the time of grading, he has horrible specifications such as the way how you write your numbers, or minor details that he will use to take off several points even more than 10 which will change your grade from B to C or C to D.
I thought Konya was a great teacher. He does not throw anything unexpected at you on the tests, but does require you to understand the material and be able to very clearly show that you understand the material. He is very clear in what he expects and very organized in lectures. His class is challenging, do not expect easy A or even an easy B.
Konya does not care if you do well. On the first day of class, he told us that half us would drop out, and of the remaining, only a few would get above a C. Exactly this happened. This does not bother him whatsoever. Lectures are just problem solving, very little explanation. Tests are 4-6 questions, usually over nearly 2 CHAPTERS of the textbook!
He takes attendance but somehow homework not required. This is as good a math teacher you'll ever see at this level and later on anywhere you go. You're forced to do math properly which is good but bad for your grade a little. Some exams require explanation which he didn't do before, which is nuts. Don't bother arguing, he never changes his mind.
Had every answer right on first two exams and got a C in both. First one was when I wrote a "1" it had a little line under it like you see on the screen here. Took off 14 points, one for each "1". Second exam he did not like how my "sigma" characters were drawn. 16 points, one for each. All problems correct. Do not take.
If you can read his mind and the way he thinks you can get an A really easy, his exams are easy but he grades you very hard
His grading is exceptionally hard but his lectures make up for it- I feel like I actually understand math now. He is extremely clear and is willing to spend a decent amount of time going over homework problems (take advantage of this!). Exams are difficult because of his grading, but he tells you exactly what he expects so an A is possible.
Prof. Konya was an amazing lecturer, and didn't give too much homework. He was always very willing to answer any questions during his office hours. Although his tests weren't hard, he is a very tough grader, and takes off points for small things. Write your answers *exactly* how he wrote them on the board!!
He is such a cutie pie.. Really good professor and really cares about your learning if you seem interested. He cares to know your name and who you are. It is a tough grader but if you do the homework and review the questions he does on the board before the exam, a B is a real possibility. Would take his class again.
I see all the negative comments and can not agree. Yes, he is a tough grader, but he is a college professor, he should be a tough grader. pay attention in class and you will do fine. he does not collect homework, but it is HIGHLY recommendable that you do it anyway. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!!!!!!
Way too hard. Takes points off for the smallest things.
very tough grader and takes off points for every little thing. takes questions from everybody and is accessible outside of class. doesn't seem to care about students and talks a lot.
Somehow ended up with a D on an exam while getting all the answers correct - takes off points for the smallest of details. Do NOT expect an easy A or even an easy B.
He is the most specific grader i've ever had. his lectures are good and you'll understand the concepts but his grading on tests is enough to drive you crazy. You have 4 tests and a final and one of the tests are dropped (if he didnt drop your lowest grade you wouldnt pass). try and take someone else
The lecture was good. Just don't miss the class.
He doesn't seem too bad till you get your exams back. His grading is completely ridiculous, and if you have the chance to take this class with another professor by all means do it. Odds are you won't pass this class.
He is the most specific grader I have every seen. He docks off points for the way one writes their symbols. I once overheard him tell a student that he will give him/her a zero on the test if he/she writes too small for his liking. He seems passionate about math and one's understanding of the material. Good guy, awful grader.
Toughest grader I have ever come across.
4 people in our class of 32 passed Professor Konya's Calculus 1 class. I understand that this is not an easy subject, but when 8% of the class receives passing grades it is no longer about how the students are failing to understand the concepts, but rather about how the teacher is failing to teach.
Hes a good professor, very patient and explains concepts well. His biggest con is the way he grades. He takes points off for the smallest things: he didnt like the way you wrote a symbol or you skipped an obvious step. You can have every answer right and still get a B or C
Professor Konya is a good teacher. To do well in his class you better memorize the definitions and proofs in the textbook and lecture. It's important that you adopt to his level of detail when it comes to solving problems. Even if you got the right answer on the hw and you have looked at the answer book it's better to meet up during office hours.
The WORST Math teacher I have ever had. Highly not recommended if you want to pass the class and not destroy your GPA. Do not answer questions clearly. I felt like a prealgebra student in a Calculus class, will take points off if you skip steps that you are supposed to master. Also, imposes you how to write ( printed and not cursive).
ridiculous grading. Math is universal, but not for him. You not only have to learn math, but also HIS math. He wants you to copy exactly as he does it. Very discouraging as he states that not even D is guaranteed. Avoid. He says and believes that calc is hard and that most people will fail. If you want to succeed, get someone that believes you can.
Konya is a very nice guy and teaches the material very well. On exams he wants you to write out answers in detail so that anyone could follow along and understand it. For some people it isn't ideal but for people wanting to teach math in the future, being specific and showing full work on problems is a good habit to pick up.
I took him for Discrete Math. His emphasis was on proofs during lecture, which works since this is a very proof-based class. However, on exams, he does want you to show a deeper level of understanding rather than simply regurgitating the answer; for those not used to it, the grading seems harsh. However, he is very accessible during office hours.
I took math10 with him. His lecture is really organized. I agree that he is a hard grader, but it is really reasonable. Just go over the notes and homework then A is very attainable.
He's alright. The material itself isn't that difficult, but he can be a harsh grader. If you don't cross your t's and dot your i's, he'll penalize you - both figuratively and literally. In spite of that, though, he's a good lecturer and teacher. Make sure to take advantage of office hours if in doubt; I would have done better if I did this more.
Gave class 10 pnts to bring mean up to 60% on a particular exam. You can be absent a max of 8 times. 2 mins late? 1/2 absence. Will drop you without notice. Witnessed it happen to the guy next to me. Will dock points if you skip a super obvious step on an exam. Grades solely based on exams. 10 Qs per exam with his grading? Dont take this class
I took Konya for Math 7,8, and 15. He is caring, and emphasizes that he is there to help you succeed. He was such an inspiration to me, and is the reason I am now pursuing math further. His test questions are pretty easy and some come straight from the textbook. His grading can be tough but it's helped me improve my solutions to make more sense.
I hope that I could give 0 for him. For those who have to take this class, do it wisely. Write your letters clearly, cuz he took points off because you did not write '2' or '5' properly. He also can not read your exam if 'x', 'z', and 'y' is in printed format. Very stubborn , impossible to argue with (about anything). Argue for grade? Take care!
Awful grader. Takes off points for not doing it exactly as he instructs although you understand the problems and your work is in general correct. Don't take him, he will ruin your GPA. If you want to have a good experience at SMC with math professor you need to join the scholars program, otherwise you'll get professors like Mr. Konya. Unfortunately
Professor Konya graded way too harshly and doesn't seem to care if a huge percentage of his class is failing or has to withdraw to not get an F. He takes off so many points for tiny things. I definitely advise against ever taking his classes!
His lectures are great and easy to understand, but his grading criteria is illogical. Take him at your own risk. You will learn the material but can be stressful
He doesn't know how to teach. Lectures are as dry as his personality. Doesn't have patience at all, I went to math lab to ask him like 4 questions and he literally got mad saying that he's not here to solve problems for me lol. Hella tough and picky on his exams, half of the students dropped this class. Gluck on whoever that takes his class lol :P
Never take his course, you will lose your credit.
I am just going to say based on what the class would always talk about. we don't know how he has been teaching for so long at SMC because he is a TERRIBLE professor. He does not know how to teach. and THEN the way he grades homework and exams is just ridiculously dumb. I had all answers RIGHT in an exam, however he subtracted several points! AVOID!
if u wanna fail and mess up ur gpa take him otherwise save urself from his dry lectures and attitude and choose another professor. he is the worst
oh god where do i begin... made calc 1 feel like a nightmare so terrible and mean
Prof. Konya is a great mathematician, and he is super smart(!); however, he lacks people skills. He is a tough grader, and he is very consistent with his standards. His lectures are clear and organized, and he treats all his students equally. The main complaints are: Konya may cancel office hours or lectures without advance notice or make them up.
SMC is not known for a strong math department and Konya is no exception. Konya is hands down the worst professor at SMC. I do not say that lightly. He will take points off your test for every little detail he can find. His lectures and boring and he does not try and engage the students in any way. Whatever you do PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
This class is easy for me, and the exam is very easy for me, just the grading is very tough, but if you can get all the answers right, whatever the grading is, you can get an A.
He is a lot of things but DO NOT MISS CLASS!!! Easy Homework: do check with him for response before submitting (basically all hand-written response) Do offer extra credit on exams and drop the lowest one Not much extra work outside of classroom
He has little homework, really though grader, lectures are well but can get off topic with the questions asked in class, loves his students, extra credits on tests ONLY. I had many points taken off because of either not writing down a step or not writing it down his way. You don't know your grade in the book till the end of the semester lol.
Took his Math 3 Class, dropped it the minute I saw how he tough he graded my homework and took off points for the smallest things and unreasonable things. He is a nice guy, just tough on grading.
Fantastic guy, you can really tell how much he cares about the subject of math and how much he respects each of his students. Even though I didn't get an A, the grading is very fair. The amount of work seems small but it is best to complete the not-graded homework to help prepare and study for the tests, which examples are taken from the textbook.
I regularly received Cs in his course. Not because I got the answers incorrect but because he didn't like the way I solved the problems. Math is a beautiful subject encompassed by creativity and ingenuity, representing democracy, one might say. Unfortunately, Professor Konya doesn't see this, to him, math is simply a dictatorship. Steer Clear !
Konya is so sweet, he really cares about the students and asks questions about you. He is a very specific grader, but if you pay attention and are eager to listen to his lectures it should be fine. He explains math so well!! I like how he gives credit for hw as well as extra credit. Lets you know he is there to help.
He is one the best teacher I had ever met. Even though his gradings are tough, he usually give extra opportunities to students. Recommend for his lectures which are pretty easy to understand.
I found it very difficult to remain focused in Professor Konya's class, since he speaks very monotone and often drags his points during lectures, making it hard to understand what is important to know. He was also picky about how you showed work. He was kind and understanding, but his lectures made it hard to understand the course itself.
Very old school. Doesn't let students use phones in class. Very picky grader. Good at explaining things and doesn't obligate students to do a lot of homework but you should do plenty of studying on your own time to understand what goes on.
Professor Konya runs a tough but fair class. He has high standards, but if you put in the work and use resources like Unstuck AI, you can do well. Attendance is a must, and the exams are challenging, but he offers opportunities for extra credit.
I definitely wouldn't recommend to take Prof. Konya right out of high school. His lectures are very boring and often drags his main point. In class he goes over the easiest examples but when it comes to the homework, it's a whole new world of Calc. I haven't seen my grade, nor do I want to see it. Dropping his class, I tried my best!
I took math 3(Trig) with professor Konya in 2024. Bro listen. I am just like the rest of you. I come on here to check reviews to see if I'm gonna get screwed by a certain professor. Listen. As someone who got screwed with another professor. You will be fine with Konya. SHOW UP and go to the MATH LAB at least 2-3x a week for questions you have.
The lectures were pretty quick and mostly consisted of demonstrations, and for fellow visual learners, many of the concepts were shown/described in a visual manner. It was always clear what to focus on while studying, the homework (esp. feedback) was highly relevant to the exams and office hours/SI sessions offered a lot of additional help.
Professor Konya is a great professor! He cares a lot about his students
He's great, although he's very picky, just make sure your handwriting is good, and do the hw, and go to his office hours, and your good! He's very good at teaching and can break down problems in a way you can understand, he also doesn't have you memorize formulas or do annoying proffs. Do what I say and there's no reason you shouldn't get a A-B.
Professor Konya is everything you want from a math professor! Attendance is pretty much mandatory, but his lectures are very in depth and informative He grades mostly off of tests, so be a good test taker, and does not post anything online, so you need to be there every day.
Prof Konya does the fundamentals of teaching excellently. Always on time, always uses the full class period, frequently welcomes questions. Clear syllabus that tightly matches material. He also genuinely cares about student success and his experience in guiding students on their academic pathway Mathematics-related broadly is exemplary.
i wish i never took this class. he gets on your nerves about the little things, so even if you're a math prodigy, he'll find something to nitpick about. i've never had a professor as useless as him in my life. he makes simple things complicated because he can't explain things properly. he also lacks empathy, a minute late and you're half-absent.
Professor Konya is alright overall. The main thing to watch out for is his grading—he takes off points for small, random details. Make sure your handwriting is clear, show every step even if it's simple, and supplement your solutions with logic: the if(s) and then(s) and the therefore(s). If you do that, you'll be fine in his class.
Absolute horrid of a class, genuinely do not take this class for the sake of ur sanity. Nitpicks way too much, handwriting matters the most in this class takes off every point possible. U have to solve the problems his way and his way only, takes away the beauty of math.
His lectures are great, and he offers extra credit on every exam, which has significantly improved my grade. All you need to do well is to follow the syllabus exactly and rely heavily on the textbook. Don't take this class if you want an easy A, but I definitely recommend Professor Konya if you're pursuing a STEM field.
