the midterm and final were ridiculiously hard. if you don't know the slides inside and out, it will be very tough. he's very cute and has cute little feet and a goatee. but he doesn't curve so be prepared to work-attendance required and must finish wkshts
Kroll's lectures are fun and clear on his behalf, but when it comes times to exams he does not give you a clue on what to expect. If you ask for help he tells you to study off your notes . Let's just say on the fist exam the class average was a 60%!
What the heck. His tests stink they are sooooo hard

Kroll is a great teacher, one of the best at Loyola. He is a very intelligent man, but although his tests are extremely hard, you can get by especially since his curve is massive. You will learn so much from this man and he was a great lecturer.
Dr. Kroll is a great teacher. He doesn't get enough credit. His tests are only hard if you don't study. He does say study from your notes, but the trick is to cover the info in the book based on his notes. That way you know what to concentrate on!
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! I repeat do not take this man unless you really have to. The tests are extremely hard and his lectures do not help at all you need to read the book in order to pass the tests. Wouldn't reccomend him at all. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
You need to study a lot for his tests, but his lectures are relatively interesting and he adjusts the grades at the end a little. I got an A, but I studied a lot.
Hes a pretty cool guy once you get to know him. His teaching style is really boring, powerpoints, oh how I have thee. His first test was pretty easy, a lot general facts though.
Tough
Let's just say he gives 2 exams that count 35 points a piece. He's a wonderful teacher but that's just ridiculous. Take his lab only if you're good at testing!
Took during summer. All right teacher. Feels like a breeze though class but practicals are harder than hard. Lab assignments are required and should be studied. Occasional quizzes but not too bad.
The kind of guy you'd want to hang out with OUTSIDE of class. He's cool, but he's really boring, and his midterm and final are really tough. If you get an A in the course, congrats.
Dr. Kroll rocks. He is one of my favorite profs. But yes, you little freshmen babies, you do need to READ! and go to class! I got A's in both semesters and both his labs. Work hard, and you will be rewarded.
Dr. Kroll's bio 111 lab has four quizzes and two tests. He drops the lowest quiz. End of semester curve was about 1 to 2 percent. NOTE: One point equals one percent of your grade! Hard tests. Quizzes are worth 3% each while tests worth 35% each.
okay, buddies Dr Kroll is ok. Nice guy, funny maybe. His lab was kinda of ok cuz i and my lab patners hardly did anything. Came to class just to have a good time. His exams are ok. His a nice guy overall, but i had fun in his labbbbbb.

This Bio 112 class made me want to spit on my 111 class because this was so much better. Dr. Kroll's quizzes were on the basics and his exams were easy if you really read the chapters. You need to know a lot of slides, so use the website to ur advantage.
Don't believe him when he tells you your test grades will be curved. He convinced us all that our first test grades would be curved 10 points; then suprise! He didn't curve them at all at semester's end. We ended up overestimating our grades - booo.
Went into the last test with what I thought was a solid A. Received a B for the semester, very disappointing....did not curve as he said he was going to. Exams are all multiple choice, tricky. Blend of lecture and reading.
I have to admit that he's a funny guy, but I think that he puts too much effort into making his students like him, rather than teaching the material clearly. Didn't curve at all. Very disappointing. Not a fun class, especially when taking it once a week.
Even though i got a better grade than expected, this guy is not nice, not funny and the quizes and tests are on really stupid irrelevant things. i do not recommend this guy
NOT HELPFUL!!!!!totally lame prof. he thinks he's funny, makes impossible exams, and if you get 4 out of 3 right doesn't give half credit-- they're all wrong!!! SUCH A JERK.
In all honesty, i feel I have lots of experience monitoring professor and etc. But to be honest, he is TERRIBLE. He sucks completely. DID NOT LEARN A THING! Talk about a waste of time and someone who puts people to sleep more than PBS. I
This guy would be better off teaching a class on fiction. Abound with lies, its hard to believe he has a doctorate. He's seems knowledgable, until you ask a question and he's clueless. Then its clear he's just reading from his notes that the textbook
All bio lab tests are hard. Choosing the teacher is only for helpfulness, clarity, and curves on final grade. Dr. Kroll usually curves about 1 or 2 percent of final grade. Very nice and approachable.
HORRIBLE! Do not take him! Let's just say he screwed me over. He said he was going to curve the first test, which would have given me a C+, but no...I received a D+. Now I have to retake the course. He also doesn't respond to your emails and is rude.
Not a good professor at all. He tells really lame jokes, doesn't answer questions you have, talks poorly to the class like he is better than everyone. I would definately not take this class, had I known that he was going to be my teacher.
Beware of overestimating your grade! He will tell you he curves and then surprise! No curve at the end of the year! Tests are hard. He's not nearly as funny as he thinks he is. Not very approachable either.
I had Kroll for both sems of General Bio and am VERY surprised at these reviews. As with any science course, you HAVE to put in the study time. I thought he was hilarious and often came up with creative examples to explain difficult concepts...had class once a week and always looked forward to it.
I think Kroll is great. He explains everything very well, comes up with good examples. I plan on taking him for BIOL102 too.
Stay away, this guy is not a good teacher, his tests are impossible, and there are only three of them. You think you do well, and you study, and when it comes, sorry you failed. Well you've been forewarned.
Dr. Kroll is a terrible teacher. Just stay away. He is my worst nightmare come to life. I can't believe a teacher could be so rude and unapproachable. I feel I would have been better off never having taken his class. One of the worst eperiences thus far in my college career.
Professor Kroll is a terrible teacher. Do not take his class if you're looking to pass with a decent grade. He is very rude and does not respond to e-mails. He does not care about his students at all!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Hard quizzes and exams...I have no idea how I passed (I'm pretty sure I only got 1 right on the final...big curve?)
one word, "run"
Solid professor! Yes you had to read, study and attend lectures to acquire the knowledge, but isn't that why you go to school? If you think his jokes are lame, your maturity level has not changed since high school as he tells witty jokes. Creative and humorous teaching style.
I'm shocked by these reviews. I loved every minute of Kroll's class. He is really straightforward, and doesn't mess around- I personally like that in a teacher. He has a cool sense of humor and has some good stories if you catch him on the right day.
Professor Kroll is a nice guy but not a helpful teacher. His tests are near impossible, and he expects you to know every detail. Plus, the wording of tests are complicated just to screw you over!! Nice person, but I would not recommend him as a teacher!
Horrible. He doesnt care about the students. Bad office hours and does not reply to emails. His exams are made to be impossible. puts questions on the exam that was not in the assigned readings or did not go over in class. He does not believe in curves even though there are only 3 exams!
I can't imagine how he can get around on those TINY feet. I mean, he wears BIG shoes so they don't look so SMALL!!! That is what you will do during lecture...watch his feet. He doesn't give any useful info in lect, and tests are from the book...but from the chapters you weren't assigned...Need I say more? GOOD LUCK!!!!! HA!!!!
Terrific guy. Be prepared to study and read the book. He goes over basics in class but you still have to read the chapters. He's not that bad if you do the work. And on the plus side, he is really funny and makes the lecture (which i had for 2.5 on mondays) a very plesant experience. Good professor but be prepared to be challenged.
He knows how to teach . you'll leave the class with much gained knowledge ant Bio. He also curves
He is very unapproachable, I don't know if he is afraid of girls or what. He is very dull and boring but tries to crack jokes. Little quizzes are easy but test are extremely difficult.
Extremely hard tests all from book, although not sure which book. Get the feeling his tests are from a book he used in the past. He puts up pictures and reads the caption underneath, in monotone. He DOES NOT curve. Class average on first test was in the 50s, no explanation and didn't seem to care.
Worst teacher I've ever had in my life. Exams were misleading and confusing...half the class failed...and he does not curve! And I am not some freshman taking a college bio class for the first time...I have taken numerous other advanced bio courses, and all of which I have earned A's in....yet now I'm stuck with a B- in BIO101
NOT HARD. I got an A- in the class with minimal studying and poor attendance. Tests are VERY straightforward (no trick questions). The reason many people did not succeed was because they did not utilize the book enough (this is all I used to study - never used his notes). I am planning on taking him next semester.
He claims to focus more on his notes than the book and tells you not to read what the syllabus says yet he tests on small details in the book! He is very unapproachable and not helpful! A majority of the class did poorly and he refuses to curve! Only the last exam was reasonable... the other exams are confusing. I don't recommend him at all!
nice and funny professor. too much cologne. you have to go to 3 field trips early morning. they are extremely boring. work is fair. you have to memorize latin names for exam. good class.
Worst teacher ever!!! Do not take him unless you'd like to fail. Like someone else who wrote a previous review, I have also taken much more advanced courses and gotten A's, but I ended up with a C+ in his class. He is rude, does not know the material he is teaching, and his tests are confusing.
I really enjoyed Dr. Kroll's bio lab. It's not an easy A, and youll sometimes get random questions but the class is really easy going and relaxed. Quizzes aren't bad as long as you read the lab book, tests are ok...you're not going to get by without studying, but again, not bad. He's pretty fair, helpful, approachable, and overall a nice guy.
His bio 111/112 labs are not for people who just want an easy A. It's a class you will need to know everything remotely relevant to what you're studying as his quizes and tests cover everything. He is a great teacher though and makes you know the material.
He gives 3 tests for the whole semester. However you MUST go to his lectures because his test is based on what he says during class. The reading he assigns is vague. The tests are straightfoward if you attend his lectures, take extensive notes, and teach yourself through the book.
If you don't get an A in ecol lab, you should leave school. Easy class, good teacher, explains everything well.
memorize the entire book if you want to do well...don't bother attending classes, it won't help...and don't question his unfairness in grading, or he'll be even more unfair. I got a C in his 101 and B in 102...yet have gotten A's in every other advance bio course taken since then...cell bio, genetics, neurobiology, biochemistry, etc.
bio lab worhsheets easy, read the entire lab and memorize all of it if you want a good grade on the tests, quizes are okay if you read and study the lab, his tests are hard and he isnt very helful. good luck.
His tests are extremely confusing and eventhough the class avergave is pathetic he still refuses to care or curve. I studied so much for this class, yet still ended up wit almost a failing grade. Definitely do not recommend this prof. to anyone.
At first he seemed like a great guy! And then I came to the realization that the only reason I thought that was because he reminded me of High Laurie in the show 'House'.... and if you've ever seen that show you know what I mean. Be prepared to work your butt off before exams!
Fun, engaging guy and a good teacher. He has some hilarious stories he uses to spice up the class. He moves quickly, be sure to read the book and you'll be fine keeping up. He gives extra credit for class participation by using the PRS clickers. He curves the final class grades, not each individual test.
Reallydifficult teacher that I would advise to avoid for lecture sections at all costs!!
Of course Dr. Kroll's class requires lots of work... any Gen Bio lab requires lots of work. Just listen to his lectures before the lab and you basically get all of the answers. Read the labs a few times before class and you should be fine on the quizzes. He's so much easier than other professors... and his A- is an 87, A is a 90!!
I had Kroll for 2.5 hours each Monday and he was pretty entertaining. Have to study hard because your whole grade is based on 3 exams, nothing else. Tests 99% from notes so you know exactly what to study. Some tricky questions on tests but overall good class and very doable
Dr. Kroll is an excellent teacher. He comes up with good examples and practically hands you the answers during pre-lab lecture. His tests are very straightforward.
Study very hard from book and take real good lecture notes. He is extremely hard. Getting an A is possible, but it will take tons of work. He is a good teacher despite difficulty.
Very good and nice prof. The tests are hard only if you dont study the material (notes and book). I enjoyed this class very much!
He's straight forward, laid-back, comprehendable, and best of all, FAIR. You get out what you put in, and he treats students with respect, and doesn't talk down to them. The course in general is going to be a little tough, because there's so much information. But he tells students exactly what to study. If e doesn't, just ask, and he'll tell ya.
Need to study the lab manual inside and out before each lab quiz and exam in order to do well, but he's good at explaining the subject. Don't expect to get out early, I thought an A was really tough to get, B is probably average. 3 non cumulative exams and 5(?) quizzes.
His tests are hard. There are only 3 tests including the final exam. There are extra points which you can get by answering questions right at the end of every class using clickers. I averaged a 79 on my exams, and still got an A-.
If you want a rude and impersonal teacher, take Kroll. He is not helpful, and does not teach the material that is covered on the test. You must teach yourself to do well. good luck.
he is the worst effin prof that i have ever had! i HATED this class to the max. he's rude, so so so unhelpful & his tests are bullcrap. i read the ch's faithfully & still couldnt manage anythin above a 60 on the QUIZZES. ive had straight A's most of my college life but i dropped his class & had to get a W. u need to teach yourself, good luck.
Not that hard. Read the book and go to class. the exams are fairly difficult but you can get an A on each one. multiple choice. no essay. Dont slack off but if you're a bio major you know that
If youre taking him for ecology, its been a while since he taught so he's still working the bugs out of his regiment..otherwise he's a cool guy, treats students as students treat him, and semi-funny. Arguably, people who don't like him don't agree with his classroom policies (no fooling around) and don't bother to work in the class.
This class is very, very boring. Kroll is a good guy, and he's pretty funny on occasion. However, his lectures are dull and he's not always clear about what he's talking about. I took his 2 and a half hour class, which I don't recommend doing at all. His tests are pretty challenging as well. He offers lots of Clicker questions each week.
he's a piece of work that's for sure. I'm interested in working in ecology so was excited to take this class. didn't really learn anything from the fieldtrips cause kroll doesn't teach anything. he's an ass and doesn't care. oh and he forgot 4 of our labs so the lat day of lab, assigned 400pts to turn in the last week of classes!
Not a good choice for a biology lab. Hard grader and the field trips are a pain. Did not like the 7:00 am van rides to BFE. Helpful professor when you have a question, but not an easy class. avoid if possible.
his tests are hard. forget his notes. go off the book 100% in 150% detail. each word in the book research the word. I mean it.
ya...so this class is miserable, it used to be ok...i mean i got as on the first 2 exams...the third one kicked to crap outta me, im not sure how he considered that exam to be representative of the 6 chapters we "covered" but it wasn't, i recommend not taking him..its a fairly frustrating class...u'll wanna punch him in the face by end of the sem
Dr. Kroll isn't the worst lecturer I've ever had, but the material/course in general is the cure for insomnia. Dr. Kroll isn't especially helpful, and I found the exams to be based on your ability to memorize random facts, not representative of understanding overall concepts.
I took three of his classes, got high B's and an A, and I'm not a 3.0+ GPA person. He is a great professor; I don't see why he has so many bad reviews. Lectures are rarely boring, and tests aren't hard as long as you read the book and attend lecture, which you should do for all classes. If chance permit, I would take another class with him again.
Easy A, I think his class has changed in the last year, I have heard many others in class saying they have A's as well. Teaches clear and get what you expect.
He is the most boring monotone teacher ever and just tries to trick students on his exams. He likes to belittle his students and is extremely lazy.
It's a little boring because it's ecology but if you do the work it's a really easy class. Dr. Kroll is very clear and I thought very easy
Most of his tests are straightforward, but his third test was terrible. Quizzes are very easy. I ended up with a B+ in the class and it was my first B in any biology class. He teaches too much math/equations for ecology. Very easy to get a B though. Gives 20 points for online discussions. Does not curve.
Use ecologyplace that the book comes with. Tests are easy and straight forward. The 3rd test is the hardest, but just know the equations really well and you'll be fine. The book will help with some details. Lectures are 80% of test material, ecology place is 15%, and random book stuff is 5%.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! Save yourself the embarrassment and your gpa! He refused to tell us the class average because they were so low. I took his class in the summer so that might be why its harder. But he is the worst teacher ever and the tests are impossible. Each are 70-75 questions. DO NOT TAKE HIM. HES NOT HELPFUL AND VERY RUDE!!
You would be better off making patterns on Kroll's multiple choice exams, than actually trying to figure out what his questions are asking. Actually, a monkey probably has an equal chance of getting an A as you do. His curve is very minimum, even though the class average is a D. If you care about your GPA, or like biology DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Overall this 'professor' doesn't know how to teach. He was always unprepared for class. I had him over the summer, and I completely regret taking his class. Don't take him, save yourself and your grade.
Tough professor, very little curve and not until the end. His tests are hard, and based a lot on the book. His lectures were very good though. He did a great job simplifying/explaining concepts. A good grade probably required being very familiar with the book AND having good notes. Witty guy, but doesn't come off as super approachable.
I found him quite humorous, but the material was sooooo boring. Not an easy class. An A is possible but good luck opening the book and not falling asleep when you start reading. Ecology=yawn
This class is a bore. Literally every slide on Kroll's powerpoints is some type of graph. Quiz after every two chapters completed. Not too hard but he doesn't give much direction as to what to study. READ THE BOOK! or you're doomed. He tests you on many topics in the book that he doesn't bring up in class.
Overall Kroll is a good lecturer, and presents the material in a more interesting manner, because ecology in itself is a bore. The exams are somewhat challenging, especially the third exam (watch out!). One word of advice to obatin an A would to read the textbook religiously.
Eco lab is EASY. He's a good teacher with a very dry wit that seems to fly over everyone's heads. Field trips were fun, I'm surprised at all the whiners.
He is overall good at lecturing and clearly enjoys the subject. However, his tests are ridiculously hard to understand and he refuses to curve. He attempts to create application questions in order to see the students comprehension, but makes the wording so complex and tricky that its impossible to get an A. Its interesting but save your GPA!
nice guy. 2 field trips (lot of walking, hiking, fishing). labs are pretty easy. he says he gives 40% of the class an A. final is just identification--not too bad. an A is definitely possible.
Four exams and a few quizzes. Lecture is on powerpoints which gives you some details about the book. Most of the test is based on the book rather than his lectures. Make sure you read everything and memorize it all. Exam 3 is just killer. Basically dropped me letter grades, so be prepared. It's possible to get an A, but too difficult. Not recommend
Ecology. He sucks. He is a nice guy who can joke around but his test are the worst. It just comes down to chance. It's not clear what he will test you on and his question are the most infuriating wording ever. Do not take this class if you want to get an A. I also have lost all interest in ecology after taking this.
This class was difficult to sit through mostly because Kroll is such a poor lecturer. He is very easily distracted and glazes over the material but he expects you to know it thoroughly on the exams. He mentions that he doesn't understand why people say he tests on things that he didn't talk about-there's a reason so many people say that
Great professor, he is passionate about the subject and knows how to teach. Test's are hard but an A is possible. This is college not high school, you have to do the work to get an A. Read the book! Quizzes are easy, if you study. I recommend this teacher!
Dr. Kroll is a nice guy, typical dry humor that you see with educators. Unfortunately, he doesn't realize that a class average of 65 is not good. This guy is an extremely difficult teacher, my intro class had 20 students and only one of them got an A. Be prepared to read the book like your life depended on it.
Dr. Kroll is an engaging lecturer but his failure to develop clear, lucid exams preclude students from demonstrating mastery. His tests include topics not covered in class or the syllabus, and are worded in such a way that multiple - or no - responses may be correct. Bright, diligent student who value their high GPAs should avoid this professor!!!
I took Dr. Kroll last year, and I really liked the way he taught. He is a really good professor and I would take his class all over again if I could. TAKE HIM!!!
Despite all the negative reviews of Dr. Kroll. I had no bad experiences with this guy. Getting an A in his class is absolutely possible. My guess is that a lot of these negative comments come from biology minors who haven't taken too many hard biol classes so they find it challenging. If you've taken orgo. you do do ecol.
If you are taking Ecology avoid Dr. Kroll at all costs. I didn't believe the negative reviews until I experienced him in class. His lectures are very broad and do not go into much detail, only explaining the basics. On tests, the minute details are asked and you are expected to know them. Dr. Kroll also gives no aid to the class for tests.
avoid. there are better professors to take for ecology. 3 exams + 1 final + iclickers+ 10 quizzes + posts on sakai. Tests are so difficult the averages were always in the 70s & no curves. This class will make u hate ecology. & yes I took plenty of bio classes & this class was wayyyy too hard for what it was.
Kroll was both funny and not too difficult. He may not be an easy A, but by studying the textbook and what he highlights in lectures it is possible. Quizzes should be studied for from lecture notes and chapters, and easy 20 points from quick forum posts that you don't need the extra book for. Clicker questions are also easy points. I recommend!
Awful professor. Exams are unimaginably difficult. His wording on the exams are very confusing. No direct questions on the exams- mostly secondary or tertiary questions (which he doesn't discuss in class). Simply put, he is horrible.
Dr. Kroll is the hardest teacher I have ever had. He does not prepare any of his students for tests, our first exam's average was a 44% AND he doesn't curve!! I feel that Loyola should reconsider who's name they allow represent their school on textbooks and whom they allow teach (fail) pre medical students. Do not take him.
I would take Dr. Kroll again! Grade based on 3 exams (no final) and Mastering Bio homework. If you just read through the suggested book readings twice exams all based on that. At the end, he curved our class 6 points! Plus you get about about a 3 point boost from Mastering Bio, so really you only need about a 80% test average for the A. Recommend!
To some he might seem dull, but he had some funny stories and his lectures were very clear and outlined. I liked him a lot. Tests were a little difficult as I recall, and he's horrible with technology. But overall a cool guy.
Read thoroughly and do the questions in the textbook. My advice, his questions look harder than they are and you shouldn't get hung up on the wording. Once you get over that, his tests aren't that hard and you can easily swing a B. Lectures are kind of interesting, he does drone a bit though.
Kroll is tough, but he does curve. Errs on the difficult side so he can bring up grades. Animal behavior was a fun class and Kroll is entertaining and passionate. Also has a pretty fun country music band. We took some easy quizzes, never got less than a 910 on them. Exams are difficult but it is a 300 level class. Would take again.
William Kroll is a great person, however his lectures are quite a bore. He uses random examples and says random things in general that will make you laugh but if you read the book and study enough outside of class you should be fine. You will have the urge to skip class, but try not to. Book is necessary.
Really great lectures! Compared to other biology professors, he explains concepts clearly. I really learned a lot from him and he's a wonderful professor, but his exams are really tough. The questions are really in depth and not straight forward. Most of them are application problems. Grades are basically based off 3 exams and a couple quizzes
Dr. Kroll is a cool guy. His class is as easy or as hard as you make it. That means that you MUST go to class and MUST do the readings. He tests on everything he says he will and nothing more or less, in fact, he lists what he will test on you in the syllabus. He takes the donkey to the river, it's up to the donkey to drink it.
This professor is terrible. I spent thousands of dollars to not learn much. He wasn't very nice and refused to accommodate students' needs. I do not recommend him. His lectures were boring, and he asked for extremely long and complex lab reports. I love ecology, but hated this class...
This has been the worst science experience of my college career. I am failing to understand why a 102 course is impossibly difficult?! "Weeding Out" students is an unnecessary procedure, and should obviously be left for the Loyola Admissions Department. His exams are excruciating and not made for the 100 level course. Good luck!
Kroll is a good guy, but for loving the topic he teachers as much as he does, I would have expected his class to be more interesting. His exams are not something you can wing, they are tough, and he does not curve. You have to work just to pass let alone get a good grade.
Dr. Kroll can be a bit unorganized at times, but overall he is a friendly and funny guy. A good amount of the material on the tests was not really covered in lecture, so it can be hard to pinpoint what to study. Take him if you are good at studying and good at biology. Quizzes and mastering are super easy. Great story teller!
He asks the most specific questions ever. Read the textbook very carefully because he asks what you though was not THAT important. Hardest gen bio ever.
Took Kroll for General Biology and loved him and got an A. So, i took him for animal behavior and it was awful. His exams cover very little from his lectures and the books so average grades were just above a D. Weekly forum posts, 3 exams and a non-cumul final, quizzes (lowest dropped), and Sim-u text assignments (like mastering). Try not to take.
Dr. Kroll is an interesting lecturer and is very clear about what information will be on exams. He is genuinely interested in the subject matter and in his students. He added extra assignments throughout the course but the assignments were simple and aided in the understanding the application of the topics. Beware of corny jokes.
I feel extreme pity for you if you are stuck with this professor as I was. He rambles about random things that don't pertain to biology and puts information not discussed in class on quizzes and exams. He is very rude when you ask questions, often times not answering or saying "I don't know." Save your GPA & DO NOT TAKE! Avoid at all costs.
Prof. Kroll is a relatively funny guy but as far as his teaching method is concerned, you're better off just reading the textbook and then looking over his powerpoints rather than listening to what he has to say. Make sure to do the Mastering hw because it could save your grade if you are bombing the quizzes.
Kroll is very intelligent and I think his ramblings are actually beneficial in getting a deeper understanding of biology but its not needed for the exam and takes up time. Lectures help but you need to read the pages listed in his syllabus. 3 exams with difficult application questions. His teachings help with the broad concepts but you need to read
He always gives good feedback, is available for office hours, and will answer student's questions very in depth. He likes to talk about his cats which is cute. However, I wish he would explain concepts more uniquely in lecture instead of reading off the slide.
He literally reads off of the slide. I took AP Bio last year and passed the test but I didn't want to be ill-prepared for my future bio courses and I wanted to boost my gpa a little bit. Bad idea. His exams are never straight forward and require critical thinking. Keep in mind I passed the AP exam and still got a B+ even after I studied so much.
Kroll is the only option for animal behavior, but hes really not all that bad. Goofy guy, makes good jokes. His only problem is that the language he uses on exams is harder to decipher than the material it is concerning. The actual material is easy and enjoyable but trying to determine what he is asking and the difference in the MC answers sucks.
Lecture attendance is not mandatory. He does have random quizzes that he announces in class so make sure to stay up to date. His exam and quiz content is awful and does not correlate with the material covered in lecture or the slides provided. There was no hw so your grades are calculated only through exams and quizzes, only final grades are posted
Dr. Kroll tries to tie his lectures to real world scenarios, which I appreciate! However his exams and quizzes were hard because they were all fill in the blank and harshly graded for anything a little but off
I love Dr. Kroll! Yeah his tests are hard, but he curved everyone's exam by 10 points! He goes into great depth and gives good advice on what you need to know for the exams. If you bomb exams, you have the mastering assignments and quizzes to help you. He may go off topic a bit, but he always has corny dad jokes to share and I love it. Take him!
Do yourself a favor and stay clear from Dr. Kroll. His lectures are really hard to follow, his exams are usually around 75 questions and are extremely specific. You could go to all of the SI sessions, read the biology book front to back, and do all the mastering biology assignments and still fail. He is also really difficult to meet with.
Material was great, Professor not so much. Lectures are hard to follow. Questions on exams worded so they are difficult to understand. Addl book required, but available online through the library. SimUText req. Make sure you have the current version of the textbook regardless of what youre told. Overall unorganized and unnecessarily complicated.
Dr. Kroll is a very difficult teacher. His exams are around 75 questions every time and are nearly impossible. He also is not good at his lectures he just reads off the slides and confuses himself while teaching. You can read the textbook, go to SI sessions, and study for hours and you might get a C. Seems like a nice guy but is very difficult.
Dr. Kroll is nice, but his tests are much more difficult than other Biol 101 courses. He practically reads off his powerpoints, which often made lectures boring. However, he gives good feedback during his office hours. He also curved our final grades, since the class averages for exams were low.
Unaccessible outside of class. Barely answered emails. Unwilling to help. Said wrong things in lectures. Unorganized. Forgot to post assignments. Made the material seem more complicated than it was. 4 exams made up most of the points. Exam questions were worded awkwardly. Made many mistakes on the exams. Didn't order correct books or all of them.
Listen this is how you succeed in this class. Buy the text book, read if throughly (and I mean know it, memorize it). Print out the lecture slides and write down notes DURING (go to class) lecture (sometimes lecture material isnt in book). Memorize both sets of notes and go to his office hours. Hes very nice, but its a hard class. Doable? Yes.
Memorize everything you read and everything he says because even then you probably won't do great, this is a tough one. The material is very interesting though and Dr. Kroll is a good professor his tests are just really hard.
Lots of studying, make sure you read the book and Powerpoints. 6 pop quizzes (announced), but drop lowest one. 4 exams, curved at the end if class average is low. Exams are very tricky. 5 Simutext assignments (similar to mastering). Very funny lectures, but you really need to study for this class to pass.
Professor Kroll's class isn't easy, but he does that on purpose to really push you. I will admit, that if you want an easier professor, don't take him. Make sure you put a lot of effort into this class to pass. There are 3 exams that he will curve at the end, but they contain very specific questions that require a lot of studying.
He doesnt give you a fish. He teaches you how to catch them. If youre willing to work hard to learn lessons for life, like for a medical careers, hes the man to take. Lectures can sometimes be, fuzzy but like read the text book or watch a video. His lessons are hilarious, ties it in with lab, and gives amazing real life examples of the info.
kroll is the only professor i've had that is surprised when his students get decent grades on an exam. brags about how hard his class is? memorize the book, memorize the slides, memorize the dawkins book, just memorize everything then pray you understand the exam questions
Hilarious. He's so funny. Explains concepts very thoroughly, which, even though his exams are difficult, is the reason I took him again. So friendly and passionate about biology. Take him !!!
He frequently complains about having to teach from a new textbook which greatly takes away from lecture material. ALWAYS had at least one mistake on tests and quizzes, ends up removing the question from the score entirely. Homework is stupid easy in contrast to exams and quizzes. Some very specific and poorly worded questions. Funny guy though!!!
All I can say is don't take his course during summer. Launchpad barely affects our grade and his exams are very difficult. I also asked him for help many times, but he barely responded back for help. We don't really have study guide so review everything before your exams. He also told us we cannot make an excuse about our wifi or sites so prepare.
I took ecology online, so my opinion might be different than an in-person class, but Dr. Kroll was pretty good at teaching the material. His tests require you to study a good amount, but they're not that hard if you study. He simply expects you to know the material. Quizzes, HW, and forum posts are free points; no curve but drops your lowest quiz.
Dr. Kroll is super passionate about Bio and he does not make his class easy. I did not do well on my first exam and he really made me feel like I could succeed giving me advice on a personal zoom call (how many profs would do that!) . If you want an easy class don't take him, but if you want to really learn he's the best you'll get.
Dr. Kroll is a really nice guy, light humor, and overall pretty chill as a person. However, his class is the opposite. VERY intense, accomodates no excuses, launchpad is barely any points. Great guy, terrible class. TEST HEAVY
Literally cannot tell you what I've learned in this class. The questions on the tests are a mix of fair and stuff that you had to read deeply from the textbook. He's always late on posting the asynchronous lectures, which is the only way this class is taught, meaning we have less time to learn the material. Makes me dislike ecology more.
He's okay. posts lectures late, goes over the amount of time he would have in person. Some very misleading questions on the exams, pretty difficult to get an A despite lenient grading scale. Not very helpful if you have questions, not understanding of other explanations- doesn't communicate or time manage properly. Don't recommend- but survivable
While the class was asynchronous, he gives little information on the topics presented. Provides no practice problems on the math problems in ecology. Exams are full of misleading questions, mastering does nothing for your grade, especially since each assignment is only made up of 5-10 questions.
It makes me sad do see so many negative reviews of this man's class. He tried genuinely hard to make the class interesting and funny, although the class was entirely asynchronous. It's not an easy A class and you do have to put in the work. I did notes on the ppt and then wrote study guide and did fine.
Do not expect an easy A. With that being said, BIOL 320 / ANTH 320 was fascinating. It was an honor to take the class during Dr. Kroll's last semester teaching. If he comes out of retirement to teach part time (like he says he probably will), take his class! He has taught at Loyola for over 40 years, and it is clear that he loves teaching.
Professor Kroll is one of the best teachers I've had at Loyola and Animal behavior was such an amazing class. The lectures and content were interesting and you can tell he loves the subject and he loves connecting with students and helping where he can. I'm sad to see him retire but I'm so glad I got to take him!
