Professor Spears is highly entertaining! He definately knows his material. One complaint...he needs to ditch the mello joy t-shirt. He wears it far to much.
he makes history truly interesting. the lectures arnt dull and hes always cracking jokes to keep you paying attention. the tests are easy if you go to class and take decent notes and read the reading list he provides for each test. My favorite teacher by far!!!
Funny as all hell! Makes history interesting and fun. Class can be a challenge. I would recommend him!
I found this class challenging because I am not a history person so most of the time I was very bored. To get a good grade all you have to do is take really good notes and read the textbook and try to remember all the little details.
great teacher! he's hilarious and always makes class fun! he hates cell phones though, so do not let it go off in class cause he will go off the deep end! all you need to do is remember all the little details that he thinks you should know and you will be fine! i would recommend him!
He keeps your amuzed for the most part. I dont know how many times I had to laugh out loud at him during class. I would recommend him! Make sure you at least skim the chapters if you want a A, other wise take your B or C. He pulled multiple choice out or non-lecture material. But if you go to class, you can pass.
He is A-W-E-S-O-M-E. He's funny and makes the material easy to learn. I loved the class. This class is a Must Take.
Spears is probably the funniest and best teachers I have ever had. He made La History fun to learn. Just follow the book and go to class for discussion and you will pass with ease. He usually has 1 essay questions on each test, but he gives you what you need to know before the test.
Funny as hell!!! However, gotta go to class, take notes, and read but he's hysterical so its not too bad.
Great professor. ANYBODY can pass if they go to class and take decent notes. For tests remember dates and why its impt. Gives pop quizzes when a lot of ppl are absent. Makes history so fun and funny because he lived through most of it.
very funny and keeps class interesting
A great teacher! his lectures are fun, thorough, and easy to understand.
Spears is funny but be prepared to write the whole class period. Lot of memorization with notes, including dates and why something is important. Essays on every test. Gives pop quizzes rarel for bonus. Basically, if you study you will pass easily (with a B or higher).
He's a pretty good teacher. Amusing in class but awkward as hell. Expects a lot of dates and hard facts in essays which is hard for me. I found that if I just took the topic and basically vomited any and all info i could remember about it I'd be good. He doens't grade by your english just if you know your stuff. DON'T MISS A DEADLINE!!!!!
He rambles on for the entire class period, and half the stuff he talks about is useless for the test! He expects you to get your test answers from the book!
He rambles a lot but he is interesting sometimes. His test are a different format but not too bad.
He rambles a little too much. Pretty nice for the most part. You have to remember dates and lots of memorizing. and you do need your book!
This class was average. He talks the entire hour and sometimes it's about pointless things. Make sure you read the book because he sometimes put things on the test that he didn't mention in class. And the book report is an easy A.
really good teacher, requires a lot of notes but if you pay attention should get an A. Never used my book either.
He is odd, yes, but most of the time it teaches history and tells it like a story. He makes it entertaining. If you should study, take good notes, have an essay in your mind before class you should make an A or B.
His lectures are everything!! You have to be able to write really fast and be able to take notes very well. Tests consisted of a 3 page essay AT LEAST multiple choice and a paragraph for each 5 short answer thingys called IDs. Don't have photographic memory? THEN DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS with him... Book review was stupid but GET THE BOOK APPROVED!
Class always got out early. REALLY FUNNY GUY! Tests are hard! Shows no mercy for late papers! Overall easy class.
TEST ARE HARD. word bank to match 1-20, choose 7 of 20 topics and wright a paragraph about each 1 (better be long), and 1 short essay that must be about 2 full pages front and back to even get full credit. Must have photographic memory to pass with a A, if you don't take somebody else.
I loved his class! It was definitely entertaining! He's really funny and his test are really easy if u pay attention and take notes! I've enrolled in his class again for next semester! TAKE HIM!
Hilarious, take him.
This class was extremely hard. If you do not remember things well DO NOT take him. I struggled during every test trying to have photographic memory.
Class is fairly interesting, he lectures every day but somedays the lecture is only 10 min. Tests are ok, you need to use notes from class and ideas from the book.
Not very good! he doesn't help at all!; the whole test is essay form and he always says you doesn't write enough so he gives you an F
This is my second semester with him and i loved both classes!! he's very helpful and easy to understand! i would definitely recommend him.
If you go to class, he will really help you out. Lots of bonus opportunities. However, lots of notes and you MUST study.
He was GREAT! I would recommend taking him as often as possible. He is very helpful and is always open to look over rough drafts of papers. He's funny and really gets into his lectures. I made an A in the class with minimal effort. He made an otherwise boring class highly enjoyable.
I found him tedious. He frequently loses himself in drug induced fantasies. He becomes incomprehensible and disoriented. Exactly how he got a job, I haven't a clue.
its alright if you dont have good grade on the first test, his tests will be easier as the semester goes on. just try to read one day before the test and you'll be fine.
He is very interesting to listen to. However, his tests are HARD and LONG. If you're looking for interesting, take this class. If you're looking for an A, I'd choose a different prof. He gives 4 tests, equally weighted. We didn't have any other point opportunities, extra or otherwise.
Write a lot on tests, and you will be fine. If you speak up in class he gives extra points. He lectures exactly what is on the test.
Easy goes over everything in class. Study for essays.
I'd call him a jerk, but he would probably just get off on it. He won't care at all if you pass or fail.
Tries to make jokes in class and makes you want to attend an 8:00 class. His tests and quizzes are straight forward and if you study you will pass! Lets you know what his tests will be like and the topics for the essay. I enjoyed his class and would take him again if I could.
He is a very good teacher and I enjoyed going to his class. He made a lot of jokes and made the class fun. To pass his test you need to read the book though. They are not that difficult but you have to show him you know what he is talking about.
I absolutely LOVED him! He was a great teacher and truly knows his material. It's obvious he loves what he teaches. He made the material extremely interesting and humorous. I would definitely recommend him, especially for Louisiana History!
Save yourself. While he loves what he teaches, I wrote down EVERY THING he said and studied it all and still came out with a D. I recited the LA Purchase perfectly and made an F on the test. Very harsh grader. The only perk is that it is a pretty interesting class if you love LA!
I love Louisiana history. Spears is very intelligent. No homework. Just test. Study/Read the WHOLE book. Know the material. Super hard grader. Unfair with grading.
look if you want to take this class, dont. i studied my butt off for all the exams. pulled all nighters, met with tutors ect. ect. and i still got a C barely. his essays are ridiculous. one of my essays was to short then the next was to long. just don't do it. find another history class to take. he makes bad jokes and he definitely should retire.
Great teacher. He cracks jokes that are not always funny but he keeps you interested. He makes the American Revolution very intriguing. His test are hard but if you type your notes and study a day or two prior you can get a solid B. 3 page essay is an easy A. Study hard for the final and you will get an A. I did and made all Bs on the test.
I see so many people saying his Louisiana history class was hard but it wasn't. I never even read the book and I got an A. However, I'm interested in history and I find a dry sense of humor entertaining. If you think a question is dumb...don't ask google it because he will tell you something. He tells you what's on the test. So take notes.
A little skeptical after reading some of these reviews, but I didn't find Prof. Spears very difficult at all. 2 tests, a non comp. final worth only 50 points more, and a 50 point book review dealing with a book of your choice from the time period. Very knowledgeable guy who is even pretty funny. Tests on what he teaches. Taking him again for 222
Dr. Spears is a funny laid-back guy, he cracks jokes here and there that are sometimes not funny to everyone, but the fact that he makes them, is the funniest, best part of the class, and I found most of them amusing. He was my favorite teacher this semester. He seems like a guy I could sit back and share a cold brew with, cool teacher.
Only 3 tests, including final. Essays on the tests are hard, and he is a tough grader. There is a book review. He thinks I plagiarized mine, which I didn't, so he gave me a zero and probably now am only going to get a D in the class. He repeats himself way too many times during lecture.
History 307 with Mr. Spears was very interesting. He goes over the notes like a story. Must take notes, study the notes, and read the book, and you will pass. Attendance is MANDATORY. He remembers who comes to class and who does not. Overall i really enjoyed his class and would recommend to anyone that needs to take a History!
Very knowledgable, interesting, and hilarious
His tests aren't too bad, but you need to study and take good notes from lectures. He made the class fun and never boring. He grades a little hard on tests, but not on the paper. And if you attend class, he gives you bonus points on tests.
Need to know your stuff, but he definitely makes it fun and interesting.
He's tells corny jokes and makes the seemingly boring history stuff really funny. He's great at dumbing down confusing things (war strategies, politics, trading etc.) There's a decent amount of reading and I and a few others had trouble finding the textbook. Take this class though! He's AWESOME and this this classno stress!!
I took Spears for 221 (see lower review) and came back for more in 222. Same exact grading, 2 tests and non comprehensive final and 1 short paper. Lectures are interesting and he is pretty funny. You must know how to take good notes and retain a lot of info for the tests though. Easy if you study. I'd take him again and again if I could
Would not recommend. Very tough prof. Especially is you do not enjoy history...
The lectures in this class are pretty long and boring. He tries to crack jokes, so that makes them a little easier to handle. He never cancels class. I suggest that you have to be willing to study to pass his class because he is a tough grader. There are three tests during the semester and one book review. I would probably take him again.
Loved this professor. He's really cheesy and funny. Go to class, it helps get you extra points on each test. Only 2 tests, final, and a book review. Grades pretty hard on tests, but they are easy. Just pay attention and take notes. I didn't open my book at all and did fine. Don't play on your phone!
He waited until the drop date to announce that he was an irs agent that enjoyed making lives miserable and now gets to make people miserable with Louisiana History. Wtf! I asked a man with a masters of history to review his grading. He said now you know the difference between a historian and liar. I'm a straight A student worked my butt of for a B!
He gives you all of the information that will be on the tests so if you take good notes and study you'll pass. There's only 3 tests and one paper. He's hilarious and gives great lectures
Mr. Spears loves what he does . I took him for a night class which of course made it harder to focus in class but he did try to make it interesting. He cracks a lot of jokes that help to ease the time and he tells some pretty interesting stories. His tests are OK, focus on specific events and times though! He loves when you read the textbook!
Really great teacher! I love History and enjoyed his lectures! Just have to pay attention! We had 3 exams including the final, and a book review. If you attend classes regularly he will give you 4 extra points on your tests, this helps a bunch! The book is a big help as well
I would not take this class with him again. His tests are practically 15 paragraphs long in one hour, with 6 identifies and an at least 2 page essay, all in an hour and fifteen minutes. I am great at history, I've always gotten A's in them, and now I'm at risk of failing. You HAVE to know every date because that's all he cares about on the test.
long lectures, gets off topic, great person, VERYYY hard grader, get ready to study, DOESN'T USE MOODLE
He's got one of those crazy cajun sense of humors. He just had brain surgery to remove a tumor and his eye is all weird , I won't say much more just think of those goldfish with the big eyes. Tests are straight forward and you can just about write what you want for the test before hand and memorize that.
he just lectures without any powerpoint or anything but he does write on the board what is usually to messy to understand, tough tough tough grader, and he requires an essay for every test
he tries to tell corny jokes, but the overall lectures aren't entertaining and if you don't read the chapters before a test you're not going to do well. dates are super important on his tests, and his essay portions are impossible.
Tests are formatted where he gives you a list of about 20 places/people/events and you pick six and write identifies on them, multiple choice, and an essay. He gives you the essay topic so you can write it before. Use the book, some questions come from there. You must memorize dates. He gives a book review paper and grades it kind of hard.
His class is entirely lectures with no powerpoints or anything like that. However, the way he lectures is like telling a story, & is easy to follow & he even makes (corny) jokes. Tests are mostly writing but if you follow along in class and take good notes, his tests are straight forward & easy to pass because he give the essay topics ahead of time
His lectures are interesting. He attempts humor pretty often. He gives the essay topics for each test in the syllabus, the IDs are pretty easy to guess, and he gives you the book review at the beginning of the semester. He ended up giving me an A even though I think I technically had a B in the class.
Would definitely take his class. He makes things a little weird but the class is interesting. Also, his test are straight forward. Its hard for you to fail his class at any cost. HE HATES CELLPHONES.
Professor Spears is a really good genuine person and he cares about his students learning. He is different than most professors, misunderstood by most students. Has a unique personality and sense of humor. He is extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about history. HATES cell phones with a PASSION Take notes, study hard easy A.
Professor Spears was always smiling and laughing during his lectures and tying them into his own life as a joke. He was interesting to listen to and has only 2 tests and a final which only consisted of material taught after the 2nd test. He gives bonus opportunities on test and requires a book report due at the end of the semester. Overall great!
One of the most entertaining profs ive ever had. I laughed at a lot at his weird/dry sense of humor. try not to skip bc he does notice! and you get extra points for perfect attendance. READ READ READ! the tests are straightforward and a C is very doable without the book, but if you want an A, read the textbook. take his night class, get out early
He's very simple, straightforward, and likes to joke. Makes the class interesting. It's a easy A just go to class, listen to his lectures and take notes. Gives 2 exams and a extra point essay
Hard grader, only few points go in. Very funny. DO NOT PLAY ON PHONES. super sarcastic
Very passionate about what he teaches. Very clear about the format of his tests. Teaches directly from the textbook and sometimes not in the textbook but he tells you when its not in the book, so you can pay extra attention. Hates when ppl dont show up for class and he will call you out on it in front of everyone. Very enjoyable good prof.
Professor Spears is an older man, so when he lectures at times, he may go far on a tangent and then pull himself back into the material. He does like to make jokes with some historical contexts, which is fine if you know your history. Be prepared to write full essays on his exams because that is what he expects.
I very much enjoyed Mr. Spears' class. He makes jokes throughout the lecture. Just listen in class and write thorough essays on his tests and it's easy. I sadly would not take him again because he said in his future classes he is banning the use of laptops. If you only like to take notes on laptops I would suggest another professor.
This man is on drugs he doesnt teach the way that helps you and is test are based on multiple chapters so its a lot of reading for a book that they dont even sell in bookstores on campus
History is NOT my strong suit. Attendance goes towards the curve on tests. VERY HARD TEST GRADER. Expects you to know ALL dates for tests & your essay & ID answers should be the length of a novel. Only has 4 grades total for the semester. Textbook doesn't help at all. He makes lots of jokes & tries to make class interesting.
Loved this class. Basically gives you all the questions that are going to be on the test. I do recommend reading the book to strengthen your essay. He gives you the essay topics beforehand as well so I would recommend making an outline for the test. Super easy!!! super sweet! interesting lectures! Hates cellphones with a passion
He is a heavy lecturer. All he does is talk. He doesnt use Moodle. His grades consist of two exams a final and a essay. Hard grader on tests few multiple choice the rest is written response. If your looking for a easy A this is not the class. All test info is from the lecture, if you miss a lecture you will fail.
Goes on tangents and not sure what we are suppose to learn.
Mr. Spears is a phenomenal history teacher and I'm honestly glad I took his class. If you need a mandatory history credit like I did and want a class that you barely have to do anything outside of class except show up? Well, this is the class for you. Just show up for every class, take notes, & study before the tests and you'll be golden.
Rest in Peace Dr. Spears, you were a great teacher. 1954-2021
