Professor Lassiter was fine, point blank. He teaches straight from the book and the questions on the tests mirror what you do in class and for homework. If you're looking for a relatively easy stor 155 section for any major's pre-req, i highly recommend prof lassiter. Good guy, quick to respond, and young so he knows how to work the technology!
I'm unsure if any STOR 155 class is particularly easy, but this definitely wasn't. Lassiter's lectures aren't great and you would get to the tests and have no clue on how to do something. There's 1-2 HW assignments a week that are easy 100s but don't count for much of your grade. If possible, I would take a chance on another professor.
I have been waiting for my final grade since Nov. 18th, and its now the 30th. Very slow with grading it normally takes him two weeks which is very frustrating. Emailed him about extra credit and he simply told me not to worry about it. Does not offer extra credit and curves were normally one point on midterms. Tests were also very very hard.
Personally I find his teaching style very dull but everything important is on his slides. Materials are easy but his tests are long and more difficult than average (considering this is an introductory course). Mandatory attendance.
This man sucks. Dude, I actually tried extremely hard in this class but he gives no points or extra credit. Scratch that, he will curve your tests one point max and make you praise him for it. If you are at UNC and want to take stats take anyone else because this guy literally will teach you one thing and test you on something completely different.
I highly recommend taking some other class for statistics. I did higher than the class averages for all the midterms and the final exam and still did not get an A. This man is a new professor but like come on... he could have given a higher attendance percentage than 5%. Also, don't think doing the homework problems will help you because they won't
Not very accommodating and a tough grader who gives zero feedback. Given the circumstances and that hes a first year prof though, I think that he has potential to really improve. Hes well-meaning and not even close to the worst STOR 155 professors at UNC. Give him a shot next year!
Hes a very nice guy who really cares about his students. Tests are somewhat tough but if you really put your head down and do your work and study hard, you can excel easily. He is generous with extra credit by giving two curves out of 3 exams and gave some on the homework. Overall, great guy and will get better.
Midterms and final are a large portion of the grade. You can tell he wants students to succeed and is available after class for questions. As an intro course, the difficulty of this class was above average. He favors probability which is hard. If taking for an easy A, beware. If taking to apply concepts take him. Slow grader and gives OK feedback
I really loved Professor Lassiter. He taught in a way that was easy to understand, and the homework he assigned were all easy 100s. Most of the grade was based on the two midterms and the final, but they did not require that much studying. As long as you take good notes and do some practice, it will not be hard to get an A in this class.
I thought Professor Lassiter was very nice and respectful. However, the class is determined by two midterms and a final. If you do not get great grades on these three tests you will not get an A in the class. Homework and attendance are worth nothing and won't help your grade. According to test averages, I did better than most and it wasn't enough.
The curves on the tests suck. One curve was one point and it wasn't even a percentage point, so it did nothing. The lectures are insanely boring but it is in Covid times so that's understandable. However, the notes and homework are at a level one difficulty while the tests take that to insane levels. Grade rides on three tests and that's it.
Prof. Lassiter isn't a terrible guy. Still, I highly recommend you do not take this class. His lectures are dull and don't correlate with the tests. Homework's are just WebAssign's which should usually be 100's. However, the midterms and finals are brutal. They include material which was never covered in class and are 70% of your grade.
Decent professor, especially considering everything was online. Grading was a little harsh at times, but that was mostly the TAs. Could easily see him being much improved in an in-person setting.
Prof. Lassiter was very nice and you can tell that he truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. However, I found that while his homework assignments were relatively easy the midterms and final were pretty hard. I would definitely take him again and study a lot more, but don't take him if you're looking for an easy A.
Too many assignments. You end up doing 2-3 assignments every week. He does not give extensions at all until its something extremely serious. There are 2 midterms and a final. Sometimes the lectures are confusing but he does his best to solve doubts.
Professor Lassiter was very kind and accommodating this semester. The tests were tough, but the webassign homeworks and attendance points really helped me after I struggled on the second midterm. If you put in the work and learn from your mistakes (theres room to make them), especially on tests, you should do well in this class.
Prof Lassiter is a very straightforward professor. He teaches straight from the textbook so you really don't have to read it ever. His slides explain everything. It's easy to get full credit on the homework even though sometimes the problems are hard. He doesn't try to trick you on tests and they are just like the practice tests.
Will gives great and understandable lectures, especially as a new professor, during the pandemic too. His grading was fair, although I personally felt his final was noticeably harder than midterms. Homework was straight-forward. I was surprised that as a student who took stats already in high school, I still worked a good amount for my A!
Lectures are straightforward and clear. Doesn't test untaught material. Accessible during Office Hours and if you ask a question on Piazza he responds quickly. Clear grading criteria, a significant part of the grade depends on HW which is easy to get a 100%. Midterms and Finals aren't difficult. Take clear notes and you'll breeze through the class.
Great professor. Replies to emails very fast and really cares about your problems. Lectures are quite clear for me as a non-native English speaker; slides are posted on Sakai and are super organized, which help a lot. Some slides have annotated versions. Tests are a little bit hard, but not that tough. Just put in work and you'll be fine! Take him!
Tough grader. He made everything difficult than usual after this course becomes online. I spent more time in this course than my upper level 500 Math courses. Even if you do the homework well, you may not do well in his midterms or final. They are all not regular questions. He would like to see students struggle. Do not choose him for this course.
I find stats to be difficult in general, but Professor Lassiter is definitely a solid choice compared to some of the other STOR 155 teachers. Your entire grade is basically tests, but the homework and attendance grades can bring up your average. He also has long office hours where you can ask questions which is nice.
Prof. Lassiter is a great in terms of understanding concepts during lectures. He posts the slides before class so that you can work through them. However, the midterms/final are more difficult and worth 70% of your grade. He's great overall but there are other professors that you may be able to get a higher grade in if that's your concern.
slides are filled w everything you need for the tests. HW is a little difficult because it's mainly on Arena but it's only once every two weeks and he's readily accessible to help with the questions. he gives out small curves on the exams and allows chances to get points back and to boost homework grade. he's a nice guy.
Really great professor. If you're good at math and have good intuition, you'll be fine. Seriously, don't be frightened by his other reviews for high level stats classes. This one's easy.
I took Lassiter for STOR 305 & 465. In both classes, the exams were pretty difficult and fast paced (I think this will get better the more classes he teaches since he's relatively new). Otherwise, he is very quick to respond to questions and a super sweet guy. Homework could be long, but weren't too difficult. (Grades - STOR 305: A, STOR 465: B )
Lassi was a great choice for STOR 155. His lectures are very clear and easy to understand, he was fun to talk to in office hours, and he is a legend on r/UNC. The class is very exam heavy, but they aren't bad at all. Be sure to have probability down for midterm 2!!! Also, if you're interested in learning excel basics, this is the class for you.
Took 155 in the summer. Pretty hard class and excel based. You have to go to the lectures to actually be able to use the notes because notes online are incomplete without lectures. Homework every day but midterms and final weren't too bad.
Prof. Lassiter is straightforward in his content. Using Excel makes things very easy, and you can prepare formulas and all within it in advance. The second midterm is harder than the first because there is simply a lot more content but it isn't too difficult and an A is certainly achievable. Make sure to attend lectures for complete notes/content.
I like Will as a person, but as a professor, not so much. His idea of "teaching" is just him working through example problems so good luck figuring out what to put in your notes. I wish his review guides gave formulas or excel functions instead of just the name of the topic.
Professor Lassiter is a super caring and genuine guy. He cares about the students and wants everyone to do well. He teachers all the material in class that is on the midterms and final. Definitely recommend taking him if you need to take STOR155.
This class is difficult, but it is possible if you dedicate enough time to truly understand the subject. Prof. Lassiter is very dedicated to helping his students understand the material and is always willing to answer any questions. The midterms are a little difficult. The homework is very useful to help you understand the concepts. Put in the work
Prof Lassiter is a good guy, and he does lots of helpful examples in class. He is extremely accessible, holding office hours for 6 hours a week. I found homework very helpful for understanding material which directly correlates to exams. His exams are a little tough (all online) with some curveballs sprinkled in, but with prep you will be fine.
Was my favorite class all semester. He takes his time to prepare lesson plans to teach the class and make sure everyone understands it. He is a very nice guy and wants his students to succeed. Would definitely recommend taking Professor Lassiter's STOR 155 section.
Prof. Lassiter is considerate of his students and accessible outside of class. I recommend keeping a running list of Excel functions and formulas to have for the exams (ours were open-note online). The final seemed way beyond the difficulty of the class to me but overall pretty relaxed class. I recommend taking Prof. Lassiter's class if you can.
Although it's an intro class, it can get a little tricky if you do not put the work in. Make sure to use resources like the textbook, office hours and tutoring to stay on top as Prof. Lassiter seems to rush through the material. As long as you put in the effort to go to class and understand the basic concepts, you will be fine!
Homework were easy, exams were not. Totally screwed me on exams by taking off credit claiming I didn't do parts that I did and would not budge when I asked about it. Overall does not give a crap, take the other prof for this class. I actually enjoyed the content but he ruined the class for me.
I really enjoyed professor Lassiter. He always goes over tons of examples and practice problems in class, and his presentations are easy to understand. If you come to class and take good notes, it isn't too hard to do well. Class is graded on few things though, just homework, two midterms, and the final. Midterms and final are open notes.
Professor Lassiter is the best choice for Stor 155, he makes the class as simple as he can and is excellent at explaining the material.
Spring 2022, we had 2 mid terms. The first mid term was the day after the super bowl (Monday). The second mid term was the day after UNC's elite 8 game vs St. Peters (Monday) (We're going to the 4). I've never been more angry with scheduling in my life. Guess he doesn't watch sports. Class isn't too bad especially if you keep up.
Professor Lassiter gave very clear lectures and provided many examples in class. Though I haven't heard much about other professors in the stats department, Lassiter is a great choice. He is a really caring professor as I had a problem outside of class, he showed concern and was helpful. He also curved a midterm when seeing the exam was too long :)
At times, the first run of STOR 515 was a bit of a dumpster fire for Will (who I really like personally). The first few homeworks were the hardest assignments I've ever had to complete (taking 20+ hours), and the material is so abstract in some cases it's nearly impossible to comprehend. His grading can be very harsh. One midterm (average mid 60s)
He knows what he is talking about and answers any questions you have - just have to ask. Exams are hard so study but he will help you. He will also curve so do not stress.
The grading criteria can be very unclear. He takes ages to return homeworks to you but he will post answer keys on the Sakai. He also won't reveal midterm keys because he reuses questions, but you can go to office hours to see what you missed. Kind of confusing and brief on certain subjects. Homeworks were difficult but just start them early.
Easy to understand and gave many examples during class. He was always willing to offer help. Do the homework to set yourself up for success. No better choice for 155.
easy but annoying. Very inflexible about teaching style. One of those profs who only sort of answers your questions.
Never have had a professor take off as much credit as he possibly can for correct answers in my life. Do not take this class. Exams are incredibly fast-paced to a level that I don't understand how anyone could actually show what they know. Exam day after Halloween. Just trying his hardest to make everything worse.
Prof. Lassiter is fantastic. He does an outstanding job of explaining all material, and walks through plenty of helpful examples. He makes lectures really engaging and is always willing to answer questions if they come up. Exams were a little hard to cram in within the time of one class, but other than that, they weren't absurdly difficult.
Lectures and contents are good, pretty straight forward and easy to understand. HWs is just way too time consuming and useless, but still fine if work ahead. 2 exams, not too hard but graded by few questions. Didn't give any exam answer sheet even until final week. 4 randomly appeared bonus quiz in class, so go to class regularly is a wise choice.
Lassiter's lectures were pretty robotic in format and delivery, but the material was communicated very clearly for the most part. Homework every week which was time-consuming but doable. The 3 exams were crammed with so much material that completing it at a normal speed in the allotted time was a tough ask.
Prof. Lassiter always manages to teach the class content effectively and is very accessible in OH and active on Piazza. He throws in a few curveballs in his exams and there's never enough time. His HWs, although doable, were very long so start ahead of time. We had 4 bonus quizzes for up to 2.5 percent extra credit so make sure you attend class!
Professor Lassiter's 305 class was a great class. He thoroughly explained the material and taught the basics of excel. He was great at answering questions and mindful of explaining topics in ways to make sure everyone understood. Lots of opportunity to ask questions. Grading is based on weekly hw, 2 midterms and a final. Would highly recommend!
He's a nice person, but the class sucks. Would not recommend 515 with any professor. Lassiter did alright, but I think his lectures can be a bit bland at times. He is very very helpful outside of class, and was a lenient grader. He wants you to succeed, but the class does not.
Prof. Lassiter made the material easy to understand and was very accessible outside of class. Our class was at 5:45 MWF, which is a horrible time slot, but he made Fridays homework days (so it wasn't necessary to come to class), which was very nice considering the class was so late in the day. Would recommend!
Professor Lassiter is so nice. His lectures are clear and easy to understand. And he gives us extra points through bonus quiz. If you put in some effort, you will get a good grade. Take his class!
Overall a great professor. Worked with me in a time of crisis, allows cheat sheets on tests, and only a couple homework assignments a week. Attendance mandatory and graded but he builds in extra points to accommodate non-emergency absences. I definitely recommend him for stats. Lots of office hour opportunities and genuinely cares about ur success.
By far the best STOR class I have taken. Prof Lassiter keeps class interesting and is always willing to explain concepts further. He gives extra credit (2 points added to your final grade) for attending class and is generous with HW credit.
Good lecturer. One cheat sheet allowed for the two midterms. Extra credit: 0.5 points to final grade for each pop quiz you're present for but doesn't hurt grade if you're not. Class test avgs: 80s. Doesn't curve but had a points back opportunity when he realized a test question was particularly hard. Not doing too well in the class personally tho.
He was honestly really bad. And the thing that gets me is he takes down all the bad reviews, so it looks like he is a good professor. Please don't take him. By far the worst professor I have taken, and that is being nice. Goes through lectures very quick, is rude, and just overall not a great teacher. His exams also are hard
Slow grader, useless lectures, exams are hard
extremely hard final exam. does not give answer key for midterm to help us improve. also teaches material to the last day not allowing much review. also does not put in any grades fully until the class is all the way over. nice guy but not a good class.
Very hard final, does not give a lot of material to prepare for exams, every other professor was MUCH easier with a substantially better class average. He also grades extremely slow. Nice guy, but take with easier teacher if you can.
Take Lassiter for any STAT/STOR class you need! Grade consisted of 20 HW assignments (he gives points back at the end of the semester), 2 midterms, and 1 cumulative final. He gives partial credit on tests! He is the best explainer and really wants you to succeed. He's happy to answer any questions you have. His response time is respectively fast!
Lectures were boring, class was graded by a few things that were harshly graded, and I did not feel that he could explain things in an approachable way when asked a question.
Workload not bad - 6 HWs, 1midterm + Final Material is pretty intuitive and straightforward but it is a technical class (uses Arena + Excel for tests / simulations) - pay attention because it becomes easy to get lost post-lectures on how to do things if you don't Fair teacher - explains things well and is willing to take time, pretty accommodating
he is so great and lectures are organized.
Lectures were fairly dry and I think the content could've benefited from more IRL examples and applications. The class isn't too difficult as long as you pay attention to lectures and do the homework seriously; both exams and homework are fairly written (make a cheatsheet with formulas for sure though). It was an okay intro to simulation.
He was really nice and always willing to answer questions if needed. Some of the exams were a little long for the amount of time given, but overall the amount of content was manageable and we were allowed a cheat sheet. I am not a math person but I felt that he taught in a way that was clear and didn't assume prior knowledge.
Worst class I have taken at UNC. Lectures are difficult to understand. I studied the most for this class than I did for any of my other classes that semester and still barely passed. At office hours he was extremely rude and unhelpful. Test heavy course with barely any feedback. Class is essentially self-taught.
Lassiter is dope—he got Brandwein's for us during final project presentations
So long as you show up for lecture and do/review the homework, you should be able to get an easy A.
He has very solid lectures and his homework was exactly what we practiced in class. He was always super positive in class and happy to answer questions. Friday class wasn't a lecture, he would work out a homework problem that was voted on by the class before the homework was due which was great.
Professor Lassiter makes this class very manageable. Just watch the mini lecture videos and go to class and you will be fine.
- Clear lectures - Weekly Homework (about 3h per) - Bonus quizzes which improve your grade by up to 2% if you simply go to class - Super helpful and gives lots of time to ask questions - Fair grader - Responsive on Piazza if you have questions outside of class hours
You will do well if you do homework, go to class, and watch mini-lectures. He gives time for questions and goes over one homework question per assignment that the class votes on.
Amazing clear lectures. Opportunities for extra credit for showing up to class (bonus "quizzes"). Homework is manageable and we usually go over a problem the class votes on. Exams are fair and the practice tests prepare you well. Show up to every class and pay attention and you should do well. Prof Lassiter is good at answering questions too.
Just go to class for 2 points to your final grade thru random bonus quizzes(completion). The hardest problem of the HW was usually gone over in class so those were pretty chill too. Exams are super fair, and there were points back for a hard problem. Office hours were really good as well. Overall, nice professor and an interesting class.
Professor Lassiter is such a great teacher! His lectures are clear and organized, and the mini lectures definitely aid the understanding of the course materials. HW every week, but they prepare you for the exams. You def need to put in effort to earn a A, but it is a very fun course to take!
Very hard class for me, as someone who hasn't taken statistics before. Very test heavy around 70% of your grade. Final was curved.
If math/stats doesn't come easy to you, prepare to study a lot for this class. If you do all the homework and study a good amount before exams, you can deff get an A. Info goes from easy to hard pretty quickly. You get a cheat sheet for all the finals, PACK them with info from the lectures. Lassiter does a great job going through the material.
If you have to take stats here take it with prof Lassiter! His exams were very fair and he wanted you to succeed. Traditional lecture style and homework was weighted as much as an exam. Best stor 155 teacher by far.
I've never taken a statistics class before, but Lassiter's lectures were clear and exams were fair - you also get cheat sheets. Pay a fair amount of attention in lectures - the content jumps from easy to difficult quickly. Sometimes he was standoffish or annoyed during office hours, which was tough since new material lectures were dense/confusing.
Professor Lassiter is a pretty good teacher, this class moves fast but is manageable to keep up with. It's very test heavcy but you get cheat sheets so make sure to use them. His lectures move pretty quickly, so pay attention to everything he says. Overall, he is pretty good and also helpful during office hours.
He is so great! The midterms and final weren't that hard, he will curve the grades if necessary. There are also some chances for extra credit, he is super organized and approachable. I would recommend taking his class!
He genuinely cares about his students and is always willing to help clarify the material. The exams are challenging, but he curves the final grades to be fair. Highly recommend!
Good professor for STOR 155, very helpful office hours if you go, exams weighted a lot, use cheat sheets
He's a fine professor. The lectures and in-class examples are fairly straightforward. Homework and exams pretty much make up the entirety of the course grade, but both are pretty easy. We didn't get through all of the material, so he ended up cutting stuff from the exams.
take this class with lassiter!!! he was so nice and his lectures were super engaging as he posts fill in the blank notes which i enjoyed. he allows cheat sheets for all midterms and the final, as well as access to calculators. would take again!
Prof Lassiter is a great choice for stats. Tests were extremely fair and only covered what was discussed in class. He's very helpful in office hours, I went every week to stay caught up. Homework is straightforward and cheat sheets are allowed on both the midterms and the final. Highly recommend, I was terrified of stats and he made it great.
I took his STOR 415 class—he's the best professor I've had. He's kind, patient, and truly cares about students. His slides are clear and well-organized, making hard topics easy to follow. I highly recommend him if you're starting STOR 415. A great teacher for this course!
Lassiter is tough but fair. His tests are very challenging, but they are material he covered in the lecture. You get one cheat sheet on midterms (2) and two for the final. For lecture, he goes over various problems in detail. You should be fine if you listen to the lecture and understand the hw. He is a tough grader, though.
Lassiter was a very engaging lecturer, and I enjoyed coming to class. Gave 4 extra credit "pop" quizzes which each added .5% to total grade. OH were helpful especially for homework. Exams were fair and similar to HW, make sure to study the examples he gives in class.
Take STOR 155 with Lassiter, you won't regret it! HW was 25% of grade, you got 5 attempts. Every exam you're allowed a FULL sheet of paper of notes. They were fair, material and grading-wise. Attendance is 2%, but you get 5 freebies. Only graded by: attendance, HW, 2 midterms, final. He is nice and organized and easy to reach outside of class.
It's his first time to teach STOR 415 but he did a great job on it. The lecture notes are clear and the homework questions are similar to the exam questions. Have 2% extra credit if you go to class every time and finish the bonus quizzes. He is also really caring as he holds 6-hour office hours per week and is always ready to offer help.
He's truly an excellent professor. He's kind, consistently responsive, and always willing to help when the material gets tough. One of the top instructors in the STOR department. If you get the chance to take a class with him, don't hesitate.
AMAZING. He holds 3-hour office hours twice a week and is always accessible to answer questions. Attendance isn't mandatory, but to know what you're doing, you have to go since he doesn't post his lectures. The exams are close to the practice given, but can get tricky. Overall, he truly cares and is easily the best professor I've had at UNC.
It was shocking to see bad reviews. He cares for the material, being a teacher, and seeing his students succeed. He has very dry humor but it works for a stats class. The lectures and homework build effectively for midterms and final, and he allows cheat sheets. Attend and do the work on time, the material will stay fresh. I can't recommend enough.
Very fair class with opportunities for extra credit. You get a cheat sheet for exams however they are somewhat difficult, particularly the final. Lassiter really knows what he is doing and takes time to ensure everyone understands.
It was a chill class, you get cheat sheets, extra credit, and some easy bonus points from watching his Mini Lectures. Some homeworks do take some time. Overall good class for stats major!
