Ummmm. Theorem
One of the few math courses I took that wasn't made unneccesarily difficult.
great Prof.
Too slow ALWAYS
easy exams ...wish every prof is like him
super nice professor
hard to learn in class
Completely unhelpful. Worst professor I've ever had.
He has large head which mean good luck in China. All student from China should take class - mean lifetime good luck. Easy going guy
Most lazy prof ever, didn't learn a thing, didn't even get back all tests and assignments
prof means good, tries to be helpful but is a little lost and weak at getting his lectures across. Easy class to learn on your own and get a good mark in.
Ho, boy....you know, he's a good guy, and I think he means well. But he is very disorganized, and there were a lot of errors on his exams, especially the final which really threw a lot of people off...It wasn't a hard class..if u have previous stats experience it'll be OK. Not really recommened.
Takes forever to hand stuff back, but is easygoing and reasonable. Lectures are a little dry and notes have quite a few errors, but he always points them out. Exams are reasonable and are marked fairly. Overall good guy; isn't determine to see 50% averages like others in the math department.
Great!
╫
Too many people who are just naturally bad at math blame the prof for their confusion.
This is an EASY EASY class for those who know their math (completely open book multiple choice for everything). He kinda reminds me of Brian Cox.
His class is very easy, you don't need the text book he provides all the notes. A stats calculator will help alot, thats how i pass this class. All the tests and final are open book and allowed calculators! The assingments and tests (40%) the Final (60%). If you good on the assignments and bad on the final he switches the 60% to the assignments
worst professor i have ever had, he never looked at the class, he basically read off the computer screen the entire time looking at the floor, i taught myself the material while i slept
Great prof. Mono tone and boring but dont need text. dont print off notes till hour before class cuz he re teaches previous days stuff. Open book m.c tests. Final not bad. Will help if u ask. Goes at pace of class u want him to slow he will. Nos his stuff awesome teacher i got 87 in his class.
Not a good experience
very monotoned in class, i don't even bother going to class, i just study from his notes. Don't need to buy textbook cuz everything is on his notes, including formulas. As long as you do his assignments you will be fine. He was pretty nice when I asked him questions during class and during office hours. Very easy class, i ended up with 100.
He genuinely wants students to do good. His test and exam questions are quite straight forward. His assignments help students to prepare tests and final.
Not a good experience. Nice guy, poor teacher. Had to demand multiple times to get him to do examples. Avoid if at all possible.
Please do not take this class! It is honestly the worst class ever & I would not recommend anyone take it. I did really good in this class but taught myself everything. He truly is the worst prof I have ever had!
Good prof. Good jokes. Very nice to students. The only problem is he is a bit shy sometimes. The material is not hard, but you need to understand them.
Unfortunately, one of the worst profs I have ever had at this university. However, his notes are very complete... That is probably the best thing I can say about Laverty.
I'm sure outside the classroom he is a nice guy. Nothing personal but this is the dullest class I have ever taken, and he does nothing to change that. Going to class is actually less beneficial than not going and reading the 2000 slide on your own. But its open book, best 4 out of 6, and a 60% final. Low stress class don't freak out about it.
horrible prof. just stood there and read off his slides. super boring. most of his lectures repeated themselves.. would not recommend this prof for anyone except if you like to teach yourself the material
OMG. horrible. slides are impossible to follow + 4000 slides. if you print you destroy a whole forest. boring boring inconsistent lectures. doesn't respond to emails AT ALL, huge crowd at the end of class - have to wait an hour to ask a question that he can't even answer. has had serious typos on tests. best to stay home and try to teach yourself.
People are giving him a hard time. Don't buy textbook, don't go to class, he has a lot of slides but put in a few hours before a test and it's seriously hard not to get a good mark. For assignments he pretty much told me he will give you full marks if you do it. Normally 75-85% student, but if I don't get 100% in this class I will be shocked.
I honestly don't understand the bad ratings Laverty has been given. He is such a nice guy, really wants his students to do well, and has incredibly complete notes, easy tests and simple assignments as long as you put in some work! He may be monotoned during lectures but who cares! Class is easy and I actually understand stats now! Take his class!
Confusing, poorly organized slides, monotone boring voice, and vague assignments sum up this guy. This class is for you if you are good at math, want to skip every class and catch up on notes later. However for the rest of us that need some spoken instruction, it might be a better option to enrol in another class.
This prof was sick. Nice old man, wants everyone to do well. Will give you full marks for assignments, didn't use textbook, went to class on occasion (maybe once every 2 weeks), ended up with a 97%. Make yourself cheat sheets, makes it a lot easier since he has a lot of notes
He gives 100% on all computer assignments, and best 4/6 on the quizzes. All his quizzes are open book even the final and the final was literally word for word from one of our previous quizzes and an assignment. However he is incredibly boring and classes are unbearable to sit through. But if you want a mark booster class this is it.
Unappealing, dull class, but REALLY REALLY EASY!! Probably the highest mark I've gotten and will ever get in university
Most disorganized and vague professor I've ever had. He doesn't tell you what he wants on assignments and his slides are in no logical order. Had to teach myself from other online resources/enroll friends help because his slides were of little/no help when doing assignments.
In my opinion Laverty's powerpoints were fine as long as you made sure to read them over. His lectures are monotone and hard to pay attention in, and to be honest not necessary to attend (he reads off his powerpoints word for word). As long as you do fine with teaching yourself, it's an easy mark.
Confusing, hard to understand his notes because each lecture has 100 and some slides. But tests are pretty easy and you may think you did bad on the final but you will get a great mark in the end because of the curve
You get out of class early, you get a better grade then you expect, and you feel great. Laverty doesn't care about averages and everyone is doing well. It's tough to hear him as he doesn't use a microphone. But hey, it was a tough but interesting class.
A very good prof. Don't know why many people still complain about him when he gave you a high grade and an easy final. His class can be a little boring but hey, you guys should be grateful to him being incredibly generous.
Don't get me wrong, he's a lovely man and likes to crack the odd joke or two (always a plus in my book). But in terms of teaching there isn't much there, he reads off powerpoint slides. It's an easy class, but I'm not paying out my behind to sit in a room and have a powerpoint read out to me. No explanations to the forumlae, just "here it is".
If you want an average booster, TAKE THIS CLASS! His lectures are boring but the material is well explained and easy to understand. He's extremely nice prof and super generous. You don't need to go to class, he posts his powerpoints online and its easy to teach yourself. His exams are super straight forward and easy!! TAKE HIS CLASS!
Get a textbook regardless of what he says. His lectures are often short, but you do not learn anything. He repeats himself multiple times throughout a lecture. Be prepared to teach yourself this entire class. Good Luck.
I basically taught myself this class and I ended up with a 87. I went to most classes but didn't need to. If you ask him to explain something more he just explains it the same way. I also spent lots of time in the math help Centre, they are very helpful there.
Super nice guy! Best prof and class I've had at Uni. Easy and laid back class!!
Basic stats class. Open book + open calculator. Multiple choice term test every two weeks. Notes have numerous errors on them AND THERE ARE SO MANY LECTURE SLIDES (300 slides/chapter and 18 chapters). Friendly guy but all he does is read the slides so it doesn't matter if you attend. Pretty sure we were just a psychological experiment to him.
His lectures are just him reading his slides. If you are good at self-teaching, take this course. If not, the math help center will be your friend! He posts his slides. Tests are open-book but every other week. Sit near the front because he's quiet too.
The assignments he gives are hard to understand especially if you are unfamiliar with software he wants you to use which are set up in the Arts & Science computer labs. Easy midterms and he takes the best 4/6 of the midterms to give you the best possible grade going into the final! Only downside is he reads exactly what he posts online
He is a really nice guy. God Bless him.
Laverty is a very good professor and knows his stuff, however he reads directly off the slides so its not mandatory to go to class. Lots of information given, stay on top of it! Tests and the final are OPEN BOOK. He is a fair grader. Lastly, the exams are multiple choice. Ps. Video tape when he shows you how to do the assignments through SPSS!!!
Don't take a class with Laverty unless you want to teach yourself the entire thing. He literally just reads off of his confusing slides and doesn't explain anything, which is terrible because stats includes tons of symbols. I would NEVER take another class with him again.
He basically read entire slide to class and never look at the students. If you have a question you have to wait until end of the class but he is available to help you. He never replied to emails. This class is really easy. I ended up getting 90s. All the exams are open book. If you need a class to boost your avg, this is the class
Terrible prof! Don't bother going to class; you'll to teach everything to yourself anyway. Does not explain how to do anything and mumbles over his words so he ends up confusing himself as well as the entire class.
Dr. Laverty's lecturing style was not my favourite. He would often be late and end class early. I never really knew what was going on and often taught myself the material. However, he is a very sweet old man and as long as you put in effort and time you can do well in the class. Effort is key folks!
just don't, more than 200 pages final review
He reads straight off the lectures each class no real reason to go unless you love a monotoned voice. +400 PowerPoint pages per topic maybe 200 pages have new info and the rest is just to say this again. Just get a basic understanding of the material and a nice cheat sheet(open book exams), then you should be good!
This is the worst prof I've had out of 5 years of uni. People who gives this prof more than a 1 probably didn't come to class and are just happy because they got an easy A. Laverty is lazy, confusing, doesn't respond to email, reuses the same MC exams every year, didn't show up on the last day of class. I would never take another class with him.
the g.o.a.t, haha, finished with a 91.
Knows his stuff but I didn't go to a single lecture and missed absolutely nothing. Taught myself the whole corse and stressed over the 60% final which is very unfair. He literally helped with nothing and didn't respond to an email I sent from the first week of class. Do not recommend if you can't teach yourself well. Open book tests though.
All open book tests including final! Easy to do well if you keep up with notes and do practice questions. Lecture is not mandatory and he will just read off slides but do recommend going to the lectures where he explains how to do the computer assignments!
Doesn't show up to class often is the only negative. Slides are just read, so no need to go to class. Will help you outside of class if you ask. Do the work and you'll get high 80's. Open book examd
Excellent Professor, very informative and very fair. His exams are open book, so you can bring in formulas and whatnot. He is always available for extra help, and his lectures are simply amazing. Attendance is non-mandatory, but I recommend attending because he is simply that great. I recommend taking this class.
Everything is open-book. The lectures aren't very helpful and not useful, he just reads off the slides. He's very hard to contact outside of class. Work through the material on your own time and do the assignments for practice and you'll finish with a good mark.
The Worst prof ever I have had. Very difficult to access this prof; sent few emails and no responses. Prof comes to lecture and basically reads ppt slides. Attendance is not useful at all. Prof gives instruction how to do computer assignment randomly, in the middle of lecture kinda thing; if one misses this instruction, one might be in agony.
Honestly, Laverty was the most useless prof I have had in my university career. The class itself wasn't difficult, all exams are open book and he literally explains to you how to do the assignments. But he just reads of the slides in a monotone voice and is impossible to get a hold of. Take the class but don't even bother going to the lectures.
Everything is open book but lectures are pointless but for when he randomly will explained the online assignments at any given lecture. Get ready to spend time at the math help center because he doesnt explain anything in class. Be prepared for him not to respond to emails... ever. AND he will curve marks down, even if you desire a higher mark
He doesn't respond to any emails. in Webex meetings he just goes over and reads the slides, he doesn't offer to help explain for people who don't know.
first year of univserity and man was i ever hit by a truck with Laverty. already know he will go down in my history books of one of the worst profs ill ever have. try to avoid him at all costs
Lectures were unnecessary as he reads directly off of the slides and goes through the material quickly. Do all of the tests and practice assignments as many of those questions are word-for-word on the final. You can do well in the class without actually learning anything. Read the textbook if you have questions because he doesn't answer emails.
In the online lectures he read directly off the slides which weren't very helpful. He doesn't answer emails or the chat in WebEx and only responds if you ask a question out loud. I did not learn much from the lectures and mostly taught myself from the practice assignments.
His lectures are absolutely terrible, he reads right off the slides, and is monotone the entire time. He never answers emails and does not explain anything well at all. This class youll end up teaching yourself. Exams are open book... which is the only thing that saves you in this class. Profs get Fs too....
The only thing I liked about this class was he tests every 2 weeks, opposed to quizzes/midterms. Laverty is a nice guy and he tries, but this class is not worth the time, the lectures are not good, and they're dry; finished lecture material a month early. Good luck getting in contact w/ him, he doesn't answer emails and doesn't have office hours.
Guys lectures are brutal, tests are extremely easy. Says he won't curve down but does. Lots of complaints about final exam that he disregarded as people not doing well. If you want to actually learn something, or have a chance of getting higher than a 90, don't take this class.
Professor Laverty's class was not difficult in terms of course work, exams, assignments, etc. However, Professor Laverty does not answer emails so if you have a question ask him during lectures. My mark dropped 10% after the final and I thought I did good on it... Anyways I would not recommend his class.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Often times does not show up to his own lectures with no excuse, says he will go over the missed material but never does. Doesn't post marks when he says he will, says he will post lecture recordings but posts 3 and then stops. Literally the worst prof I've ever had. A prof for an online class who doesn't respond to emails.
Unapproachable instructor. Don't try to send him emails, he won't answer anyone for sure. Super unorganized in online class. Get ready to read and study by yourself. Such a bad experience of taking his class.
I hate this guy. Unapproachable instructor. Don't try to send him emails, he won't answer anyone for sure. Super unorganized in online class. Get ready to read and study by yourself. Such a bad experience of taking his class.
The most disqualified course and instructor in USask
Extremely, unbelievably disorganized. Doesn't respond to emails, doesn't answer questions on the discussion board. Bad enough in person, but for an online class it's unacceptable. Tons of material doesn't even work (404's) and the "syllabus" (if you can call it that) is just a list of assignments (none of which work or are linked correctly).
Lectures end abruptly, however, he gives the feeling of an older relative who is trying his best with technology. The class is powerpoint heavy, and has important information easily accessible in the powerpoint. It seems like the limitations and technological challenges during the pandemic are making it harder for him, but I'm rooting for him.
Super disorganized and never respond to any emails. Ready to study on your own.
You won't take anything from this guy. You won't have a good grade too. Super unqualified instructor of U of S
As disorganized as this professor is, his exams are extremely straightforward and easy (as well as open-book with the option to use google). The final messed everyone up because we got the other prof's exam but Laverty did his best to shift weights around and reduce the overall weight of the final and curved us up. Would recommend.
Worst professor i've ever had, he was just reading off the powerpoint and going to class was basically useless. He flew through 100 slides of information in 30 minutes. It does not seem like he wanted to be there.
he's old, no offence. He just reads off the slide's and it being a math class its really hard to understand when someone is just reading information to you. Overall I had to drop the class because I was teaching myself the content more often then I needed to.
Horrible proffesor. He just reads the slides and doesn't explain anything. does NOT answer emails or questions.
It's hard to claim any malevolence because he is generally trying to help, but his lectures are useless, he doesn't do any proofs and his TAs just decided not to host tutorials because they didn't feel like it. Skip the lectures, teach yourself.
Dr. Laverty barely taught us, the Stats help center should get the credit. He just reads in a mono-toned voice exactly what is on the slides. It is an easy credit though as everything was open book and for tests we would have more than 24hrs to complete it. For the final he gave us an entire week! Ended with a 96, worth teaching myself thru youtube
Amadioha will locate this man. The professor couldn't be reached outside of class. He said at the start of the semester there would be 6 exams and 4 hand-in assignments. He forgot about the hand-in assignments so by the end of the term the exams that were worth 30% were now worth 50% AFTER we had written them and weren't allowed re-writes.
Would never respond to his emails and just read his slides which were unhelpful. He never explained any topics that we had trouble with and has kind of hard to understand in class. Just be ready to teach yourself the class
William, mainly read through the slides but would add a tidbit of his own words here and there. He's not very tech savy and lectures were kind of slow but also so fast and packed with info. I'm not sure if he's unaware of his need for improvement or just doesn't care about his students but stats help taught me most of the material.
He's a good person and although the content is super dry (it's stats what can you expect) he's super chill and just wants everyone to learn. Most of the content in the class is not too challenging and he is willing to help with any questions you have. The assessments are all take home which lets you learn instead of be stressed
Guys be prepared to teach yourself this whole entire class because he for sure isn't. He just reads off the slides in a monotone voice. He's also unreachable outside class hours. Even the lab TAs can't reach him!! However, super chill guy, and all our exams + tests are open book.
Very very nice prof, but hard to reach! He's willing to talk about any questions after lectures and does his best to answer them. As all quizzes and exams are open book, not a difficult class, although you will have to teach yourself a lot. Not tech savvy at all but as a bonus if you aren't either he will help you through it.
The lectures were hit-or-miss, but the stats help center was a lifesaver. Doing practice problems on Unstuck ai alongside the textbook really helped me understand the concepts. Overall, an easy credit if you're willing to put in the work.
If you want to learn anything, avoid this professor at all costs. He is an older gentlemen who is trying his best to adapt to the online world, and is not adapting well. Expect short notice cancellations, extremely poorly paced coursework and low-quality lectures. This class was insultingly easy, with open-book, 8+ hour, multiple choice tests.
Disorganized and has difficulty with technology. Better learn by yourself from the textbook and also seek the help of your previous Stats profs if possible.
As a first-year student in Stat 103, this course should have been relatively easy, given its description as an elementary probability course however, that is not the case. You have to do 100% of the work outside of the class, so be prepared for that. He also does not answer questions well, nor does he really teach in class. Would not recommend him.
I dropped STAT103 a month ago. From what I can tell, he isn't that decent of a professor. You will become the professor to yourself if you do, so don't take his classes if you seriously can't teach yourself. I can't which is why I dropped it lol. It's an easy credit. He said the exams were open-book, you could bring cheat sheets, etc.
This prof is genuinely one of the worst profs i've ever had... he looks like the old guy from up and is about as coherent and useful as watching the movie in chinese with french subtitles. his syllabus was a whopping 1 page and the only thing correct on it was his name. our marks didnt come in from the whole term until dec.2...
Struggled to type, upload documents, etc. and lectures often started ~10 min. late because of it. The lectures were unhelpful as he would simply read formulas and such off his lecture slides, non-stop. One pro was that most of the exams were online, but I did disliked that they weren't graded until the end of the semester. It was rough. :(
There is no point in showing up to his classes because he starts late every single lecture due to reoccurring technical difficulties + he posts his slides that he reads off of. On every one of his term tests, including the final, there were format issues, effecting your ability answer. You teach yourself. He didn't even post one of my grades.
Class was easy, tests all online and open book.
Good luck lol. This class felt like a joke, I think I went to maybee 5 lectures give or take. He teaches NOTHING, the chalkboard might as well be decor, class starts late and ends early, never had a lab, i mean EVER. all sorts of issues w test, & marks, and unless u see him in class, ur never reaching him by email, EVERYTHING was open book tho so…
