Great teacher, not easy, but gives some extra credit and will help if you ask.
I had Mr. Lawler four times! He was the only math teacher that I would take at NVCC. If you have the opportunity to tke him then do so! He was great and I won't forget him!
I would HIGHLY recommend to anyone, to take his class. He is an awsome teacher. The Math Material can be difficult, he makes it as easy as it can be. I would love to have him as my teacher again.
AMAZING...definitly taking him next class
Best math teacher that i had at NVCC. He makes material clear and tells you exactly what type of exercises to expect on the test. A lot of homework!! Don't miss class.
i'm taking him for precalc, and he's the best math teacher ever! TAKE HIM NOW!!! i'm gunna take him again next semester for calculus. you learn a lot from him and he makes math fun and very clear!
he is a very very good teacher i have ever had, funny, and explains very well. his grades are fair if your prepare well for the test you will get as easy A
Excellent teacher, one of the best I think I've ever had.. especially for a hard subject like calc. Very clear, makes mistakes on purpose (to see if the class cathes them), has a great sense of humor, and usually breaks the tension every day with a little personal anecdote / going on in his life. A+
The class was easy, and he is a good teacher. I took it in six weeks, and did well.

great Professor, i love him. gives u 5 HW 20 points each, 3 exams 100 points each. just attend his class & show ur work. i was not gonna pass his class but he let me pass it. coz my points were close. very clear, expalinable, & VERRRY FAIR. take him 4 sure ppl.
This guy is insane. If you actually do all the homework (I mean really do it, not just write some numbers down) it is about 30 hours worth of work!!! Never had so much HW in my life! Great teacher, but don't take him and Drasner at the same time unless you want to do 50 hrs of HW a week!!! A+ Class
worst teacher I've ever taken, you have figurate out everything by your own...and there is too much homework involved with it...
Hes a very fast paced teacher and he likes to do things extraordinarly fast and gives TONS of hw but I have to say if you do all of the hw you will pass the class as well as his crazy tests. I'm taking him right now and just this morning he gave out 75 questions for just one section of the hw. Don't let that scare you just take his class enjoy!
One of the best professors at NOVA. He's had a 30 year math teaching background. He explains everything in a way that most students can understand. He does expect you to know your background math though (e.g. Algebra, geometry, etc) if you know that you'll be set. Great Professor!
HARD!NOT RECOMMENDED SPECIALLY FOR SUMMER.WAY TOO FAST.& UR ON UR OWN.CHEAT IF U CAN OTHER THAN,4GET IT!WHOLE WORLD'S HW TO DO.& DOESNT UNDERSTAND YOU.HE CAN CARELESS.
To be honest, Mr Lawler knows what he does and the more he seems to discourages you from staying in a fast pace six week class the more he compels you to prove him wrong when doing an inmense amount of hw. so go for it ... just a quick question what is it with sort of the british accent.
Doesn't show all of his work and much like what the others have said, he talks of his coin and gun collections alot. You'll also discuss his time at Boston College and how much tuition is now verse 1960 something. Doesn't check if HW is correct. He's a nice guy, but if Math is difficult for you I recommend Conroy. Don't take Lawler. Save $$$$
I thought the class was easy as long as you did the problems and understood what was going on. I got A's on every exam. He articulates/emphasizes some of his words really loudly (which can wake some people up). He talked a lot of his other or past classes, which got a little annoying at times. Overall, nice guy, enjoyable class.
Professor Lawler gives hard problems on the tests, but very easy ones during class. In addition to that there are times when you see problems on the test that he didn't go over in class. I think he knows Calculus very well but he is somewhat hard to understand. He explains very fast.
To get an A, you have to study & do a lot of homework. However, he does not check homework. He did not teach well. Not recommended. After 2 weeks, half of class (10 people) dropped off. If you study hard & do not have problems in algebra, you will be OK.
He was definitely my best Math teacher ever. The class was easy and he has a great teaching style. It was my first time that I understood something in math. He gives a lot of Homework, however for extra points. The tests are really not too hard as long as you study a little and do your part of the work. Great teacher!!!!
Excellent teacher.I got lucky to take his class. No compulsion to do HW(but you better do even though I didn't).A lot opportunities for extra credits.I didn't study for final but still got A(I didn't thought i would).Highly recommended if you know maths. Half of students withdraw from class before end(I wonder why?) but still the best professor.
Lawler is THE MAN! Great teacher, cool, funny, resonable, Lectures are super clear... if you have the chance to get Lawler as a prof. for any math... TAKE HIM! you wont regret it!
I don't know what some kids expect!Never to be in class and do no work and get an A?! Sorry, but that's not how it works. You have to do your part and if you don't do not expect an A!!!
Best Math teacher ever!! I just love the way he teaches. It's the first time math is actually fun! You have to do your work and study but he explains it very well and easy so actually everybody gets it! Best Math professor and an easy A!!!!
There is one major problem with LAwler. HE CANT TEACH. The guys sucks at explaining thing and top of that he has a wierd accent. At first I thought he was an immigrant, I have been to Boston and I have no problem understanding bostonians, but this guy is too hard to understand. Skip him, he's is a conservative and cocky, look 4 a different teacher.
he is the worst, he teaches easy, simple examples then tests you on harder examples. took mth 271 in the summer and he was very hard. other teachers drop lowest grades but he doesnt, even for a calc summer class. he is retired and only works to buy more coins which he brags about in class. doesnt seem to care about the students at all
ok guys, mr layler isnt that bad. i took him last summer for my precalculus. u HAVE to know your algebra to be able to learn anything in precal. Yes, he does skip some steps, but that something you should already know from your algebra. i think mr lawler is a good professor.
HE'S SO FUNNY AND GOOD TEACHER. I ENJOY MUCH WHEN I TOOK HIS CLASS
He gives you the basic knowledge you need and should know during lectures. His exams are only hard if you do not do the homework. I learned this the hard way. After finishing the assigned homework prior to two days before exams, you will pass. Habits are the enemy, not Lawler. His talents in teaching are University level, yet he is at NVCC. Be Glad
Great teacher, math is hard but he makes it enjoyable.
He is an Good Prof. Doesn't drop the lowest grade, but lets you make-up missed tests. Attendance is taken, but not counted towards a grade. Doesn't answers emails AT ALL. Keeps the class going with corny jokes, and is obsessed with coins (not judging, just letting you know). He is very lucid, and helps you whenever you ask him to.
Im taking him right now.and the only thing i dont like about him is that he never freakin' finishes the problem and goes really fast. i understand its CALCULUS but still we're here to LEARN..and i wish he had made Hw mandatory so i would get motivated to do it. becasue MOST of his exam questions are like HW problems. DO YOUR HW!
He is an excellent teacher.. one of the best teacher I got .. Before taking his class, you have to decide to study and do homeworks to pass.. The truth is that you have to practice between one to two hours a day. At the end, it is possible to get A grade. Good Luck!
His Class definetly isnt as easy as people on here say it is. Hes definetly a fair teacher and what not but your going to have to study at least 2 hours a day because he goes really fast in his lectures. 5 tests plus a final and there all pretty difficult. If you dont do home work or skip class alot you have no chance of passing.
don't take him he thinks that he's the only smart guy in the world. he is the first teacher i encounter with how made us to memorize the 19 trig fun.and made us to memorize the definitions which is unnecessary And never allowed us to use any cheat cheatAlso gave us 5test and told us that he will not drop any thing. All in all he is horrible teacher
This class is not an easy class, you will have to study in order to get good grade. However, Mr Lawler provides many extra credits, they worth more than a test. I fell 1 test with only 30, but I got most of the extra. Thus I still make an A for this course.
THIS IS THE WORST PROFESSOR ON CAMPUS! Considers it cheating if your classmate can see your test and will mark your answers wrong regardless of if anyone is actually cheating or trying to...in a small, packed classroom. Don't get me started on time wasted talking about his coin collection and family. Looking to learn math? Look somewhere else.
Save yourself some money and time. Look somewhere else.
If you are lazy, or fresh out of highschool and think you will pass class because your just awsome get real lol. This class is not a no brainer but is not as bad as alot of these people make it sound. He drops the lowest test grade, gives alot of extra credit, stops class earily almost every time. Just do the HW and STUDY and you WILL pass....
he's a really nice teacher. there is a lot of homework but it's usually due in 2 week intervals. if you do the homework and understand you should do well on the test. he sometimes gets off task but he's still pretty funny.
He's really nice. He's good at teaching, and let's class out early about 10-20 minutes each time. You HAVE to do your HW and understand the material (duh) but if you do, you can get an A. He offers extra credit and genuinely wants you to succeed. Very sweet teacher. I dislike math, but he still made it easier to learn it
I am so happy I took Mr. Lawler's class. He is an excellent math teacher. I am horrible at math, but he is crystal clear with explaining difficult concepts. Thanks Mr. Lawler!
I took his 6 week Precalc class and it was HARD. lots of homework. It took hard work, dedication, and no sleep to pass his class and get a B. You really need to be dedicated and put in 110%. The hw is there to help you. Overall, Great teacher, if you're looking for an easy A, not him. If you're looking to really learn, take him.
Great teacher. Very friendly and helpful guy. Likes to share stories or personal info, which is always enjoyable. During lectures he explains concepts very clearly, and works out a lot of problems so the concept sinks in. Homework is easy (but there is a lot), and due before each test. Tests are easy if you study the material and do the homework.
A great professor! He knows what he is teaching. The test are fair and he drops one grade. I extremely recommend him!
He is the best math teacher! He is very helpful & he wants you to learn :)
He is every example of what a professor should be. Goes out of his way to help you, wants you to learn, and makes you work hard. It's a hard class, lots of homework, and the tests are hard. He'll prepare you well though, and gives lots of extra credit. Tells some funny stories too. Highly recommend him if you can work hard.
He's an awesome teacher who not only loves what he teaches, he loves to help his students. He WANTS you to pass and makes math engaging. TAKE HIM!
Took him for pre calc. Very easy class, explains things so well and truly wants you to succeed. Just for doing the hw assignments, he gives you an extra 20 points. I would recommend him, just go to class, pay attention, and don't be afraid to ask questions! :)
Wonderful professor. Definitely attend the lectures; he'll give you shortcuts and explain the chapter in the easiest way possible. Very funny. If you both do your homework and study a few minutes (15-30) for each exam, you will do great. Total homework points equates to a test grade, so get those easy points!
He is the BEST teacher on earth. I love him. He explains really great. gives a lot of extra credits. Doesn't check homework if they're correct. Just gives grade for completion. 12 chap tests and they all easy except trig part. Drops one test. final is very easy. He wants you to pass and helps you. Defiantly take HIM!!1
Professor Lawler, is such an amazing teacher! I took him for Math 166 in Fall 2013 and Math 173 in the Spring! Got As in both classes. Test come from the lecture notes he writes on the board during class. Textbook is also a great tool use when study. Only checks hw for completion and gives lots of extra credit. Class should be an easy A.
Great professor! Lecture are clear and easy to understand and he gives a lot of extra credits. He is kinda funny and also lets you out early, which is very cool. Tests are easy if you know what your doing. Easy A for me.
YOU must already have alot of math in your noggin before taking him. He goes off on tangents about coinsfamily. He is not helpful, when class ask questions he gets attitude and doesn't want to help. He has "know it all" attitude. I asked for help simple stated "go math tutor" and "practice hw". Regret taking this class ignore these "good" comments
Once you get past his occasional life tangent, you'll find Mr. Lawler is a much more solid teacher than his first impression may give. He pushes students to try and study their hardest, but never to a point where he comes off as overbearing. Format is pretty basic - moderate-paced lectures, textbook homework, and a quiz every week and a half.
I took both calculus classes with Mr Lawler, and he is an awesome teacher. He explains difficult concepts well, gives extra credit, and drops the lowest exam. He assigns homework, and it is part of your grade. Calculus is not an easy class, however, Mr. Lawler is really helpful, and you will learn a lot!
This proessor is amazing. I took him for 166 and I am taking him aain for 173. He is clear, smart. Be ready to do homework and yu will do great in tests. ou will have a test after finishing each chapter and he will give you points for homework check
He was a fantastic teacher. Math is not my best subject, but he explained it really well and made his class enjoyable. I would love to have him again as a teacher.
He is amazing , I'm taking him for math 166.I haven't taken a math class in almost 2 years so I was lost at first but then he helped me a lot ,he explains everything even hard problems in an easy way . I'm taking him next semester for math 173 :) .He is also very funny so everyone should take his class ,you wont regret !!!
He is a really good professor. I am taking him for MTH 166 and will be taking him for 173. He explains the materials clearly for each student. He is very funny also.
Do not take him. He loves handing out D's and F's. Only people that PASS are that ones who took this class already either in high school or college before. Everyone else fails. You have a test every week and about 4 hours of homework. He takes forever to respond to emails and when you ask for help he tell you to go to the tutoring center.
HE IS NOT A GOOD TEACHER. He gives a test every week and a tons of homework. He expects you to know so much. I just finished taking him. YOU HAVE TO KNOW SO MUCH MATH ALREADY TO PASS. He does not know how to teach properly. He does not care about his students. Rarely gives out extra credit and starts laughing when students get D's or F's.
He is just amazing! I'm not a math person AT ALL but his clarity with each topic made my class much better. Expect lots of homework and DO IT because that will help you on your final grade. Also, do all the extra credits he gives, they help at the end... TAKE HIM for any math class that you need!
166 is just 163 and 164 combined into 1 course so this class is fast paced. we had a test basically once every 1-2 weeks. attendance is important. you need the book to pass (for homework). he's hilarious. he will do problems over again if you ask. he's patient and answers most questions clearly. gives a lot of homework and it's 10% of your grade
Lawler is a good teacher but his class was hard, I got by with a C. Like most of these math classes there is a fair amount of homework given (graded on completion), the problem is that he only goes over easy questions in class and then the homework and even tests will have hard problems. Because he is an adjunct professor his only office hours 7am
I wouldn't recommend this professor to anyone who has not take calculus before.
This was a 6 wk session, so it was going to be hard anyway. Extra credit was impossible & always sprung on us w/o warning. Test outlines: nonexistent. Test problems: harder than the HW, imo but lowest score dropped. No real teaching of concepts, just lots of example probs resulting in very abstract understanding. TONS of HW from text. Hard class!
If you like doing homework with textbook and paper and not online, take him. If you attend every class and pay attention, you'll get an A. What he teaches is what's on the homework and tests. He gives extra credit sometimes which count as one homework grade which is great, but still do homework because it helps. He's understanding and a great prof.
I love professor Lawler, one of the best math professors at NOVA! He knows how to teach you while keeping it simple. He is very smart and gets the point across easily. While there is a lot of homework, this will help for tests! Offers extra credit : TAKE IT!, tells you exactly what to expect on the exam, explains very thoroughly. Best Prof Ever!
I really like Mr. Lawler. The material can be confusing, but he is really organized and clear about how to get good grades. He's extremely helpful during office hours. He does a lot of examples on the board and gives the test format for every test. It is not hard to do well in his class.
Great Professor! Gives lots of homework but it is for completion and is part of your grade which helps. Tests are pretty much like what is in class except you are expected to take it just a little further at times but not to bad! If you try you will pass!
He' amazing, I had no confidence in math (weak foundation) but that change after just taking his class. Pros He teaches the class simply and repeats the concepts until you get it. Cons A lot of homework 130Q a week sometimes but checks for completion , also EXTRA CREDIT WS is just one problem and helps a lot, it replaces one HW assign. (10 total)
Mr. Lawler is a retired high school math teacher. He tells funny stories and jokes to lighten the mood. He expects you to be in class and be on time. There is a lot of homework. This class isn't for slackers, so be prepared to work, even if you have a decent background/confidence in math. He is helpful and will answer questions.
It seems like this professor was really fair grader, Although, he is an adjunct professor, he loves to take questions in before, during and after class then, answer them for you. He grades 6 exams (lowest gets drop), 5 homework assignments (textbook and paper), 2 extra credits, and finals. Most of his exams came from lecture notes.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! He is definitely not an easy A professor but you'll get an A if you actually pay attention and take notes because his tests are similar to what he goes over in class. Not gonna like, he gives A LOT of homework but he's only checking for completion so DO THEM-- they are free points!
He is really knowledgeable. It is not an easy class. You have to study hard. there are 5 exams, lowest is dropped, and a final. lots of homework (a bunch of questions from each chapter). He was a part-time professor when I took his class so he wasn't accessible outside the class. The questions on the exam are similar to the ones we do in class
I took APCALC in HS and got an F took this with lawler, and got an A. Great professor, exams are straightforward makes math a lot easier. Inspirational. 5 tests, lowest dropped and a final. Take him if u can u won't regret it. I would take him for 174 but he's not teaching.I liked his teaching method, great class
All math teachers and professors should take Mr Lawler's classes. Mr Lawler takes a really really hard subject, and explains it so simply and so clear, that I have changed to a math heavy major because of him. Take him, its a ton of hw and really hard but totally doable and worth it. If I can do it, anyone can.
he is good in explaining, but to be honest you have to be very good in math or u've been taking MTH173 before. he is a very hard prof. you are going to feel he is trying to fail you. you are going to feel like you are very bad in math. people say tests from notebooks or lecture, some yes and some no. he make it very hard and very tough grader.
he is like 42 years of teaching or more. But if u're taking class with him then you have to know that you have to work very hard for it especially if u r not expert in math. keep asking question and participate during the class, show him that you are trying ur best. if you study very hard and show to him that you are working hard. you will be fine
Hes a very fast paced professor. When students ask questions about a problem he gives a straight foward answer without explaining how he got the answer. He randomly talks about stories and gets sidetracked out of no where that has nothing to do with class?? Also I find it really hard to focus because its very boring. Wouldnt recommend
