Adds a graceful touch to finance. I think he's the second coming of Lynch.

Big Willie Styles, sorry about the sunfire, they really pay you that little!

Doesn't Care.
So hot. Hard for me to concentrate on the material because I was so in love!!
The guy should be a comedian...yet very good at communicating the material. One of the best teachers I've had so far.
Has a really great sense of humour. Cares about the students.
easily one of the best professors I've ever had in my life. his class is not easy, but he truly helps students understand the material by presenting it in a way that we understand.
Doesn't care about the students. Let's Tom the TA do everything. Do you people realize this guy works two days a week. What an easy life!
Entertaining, but difficult.
This guy ****s you on the exams. He takes no mercy but is funny in class.

This prof screws u on exams but he's very sexy! Love going to class ;)
Beware: he charms you in class and then you get bent over in his exam.

This prof makes the test very difficult but he's a HOT teacher.
enjoyable in class, but KILLS you on exams... If the option exists... switch
Great lectures, funny guy, excellent professor. Yes the exams can be tough be it is curved in the end so what does it matter? Study and you'll do fine without the curve - it's only those who don't put the work into it that don't do well.
he's a funny guy, but does absolutely nothing but teaching lectures and writing hard exams. any queries or help you need has to be done over the internet, which can be frustrating... hopefully someone will audit that course, and recommend major changes.
Great Prof, funny, right-wing, clear, knows how to explain concepts to dumb students. The exams are fair, if you're dumb and lazy you'll do poorly, if not, you'll be fine. Students in this class tend to whine (especially the females, because their brains can't master difficult concepts).
Makes you work hard to achieve a good mark, but our education would be better if more profs made us take that "extra step" and apply our knowledge from class. Hard exams, but if you are prepared, you can do well in the course.
Super kills you on the exams so be prepared...but is very very very easy on the eyes. Makes going to 8:30 class worth while..:) good luck
Lectures are great... he does well keeping you interested. The coolest part was the bu383.com website. The online textbook (with embedded excel spreadsheets) was a great way to learn the concepts, and the point-based bulletin board really encouraged participation (I even got a question answered after midnight by another student... nice!)
Teaches well to a certain extent. Speaks clearly but needs to use class sound system more better (have it more louder for people to hear). Does elaborate on more tough topics but sometimes goes to fast as well. Can be a tool sometimes. Exams are fair.

This man is like a yeast infection.
Lectures arent effective, he just wastes your time. Makes students buy 1 year of access to his site ("textbook") for $75.
Does his best to explain tricky concepts in class. His online textbook is way more effective (and cheaper) than regular ones. Tries to challenge your comprehension of the course material, which can make his exams a little on the harder side but fair overall.
First: McNally is hilarious and a psychological wizard with his students. He has very strong control over the way he influences his students into learning and performing well in the course. As much as the students dont realize it, McNally is their ally in this introductory finance course. The way he does this is brilliant and it should be commended
An effective prof, seems like a total phoney though. Online textbook should be cheaper considering it has a lot of bugs and crashed before the midterm. Tries to act like he is "one of the students" too much at times by dropping knowledge on Family Guy, Simpsons or university life. Class is pretty easy, midterms are fair, bulletin board a good idea.
Seems friendly on the surface but if you challenge him, he turns out to be very unhelpful and even a little nasty.
A very hard course, and the exams are hard too
His exams are fair dont expect a good mark without studying, he is a solid prof does his best to explain key concepts and hes a pretty funny guy, some lectures can be quite dull however, overall "its gold jerry, gold"
McNally is an above average prof and appears to be a pretty decent guy. His exams are difficult but fair. He gets defensive and can turn into a real jerk one-on-one or if you disagree with him about something. Overall, you learn your finance and he works you pretty hard.
Fair difficulty. Good lectures. The "online textbook" is a bad idea. (for students.) The bulletin board is a good idea, but it's not free. After class support is poor. He is not very helpful beyond class. Thankfully there are enough of us on the bulletin board to help each other.
Good Prof. Has his mix of good and bad jokes. Midterms and Final are hard but fair.
Fair prof. The online textbook was controversial, as were the clickers, but in the end I found that I had learnt the material fairly well. Considering he had to teach 800 students finance, i think he was well prepared and met the needs of the students. He's arrogant, but I guess if he can teach all those people, he's earned it.
He is the pride of Laurier. His lectures are extremely interesting and he does a great job of making classes entertaining. Finance is an extremely boring topic on its own, but he finds ways to stimulate the class. Midterm and Final are extremely difficult. Don't bother arguing for marks.
McNally is an ass. He finds screwing students over funny. He may come off as witty and a good guy in class but after your first midterm you will realize why most students hate him. He will screw you over! The bell curve will probably give me an A in this class but I feel that this class was a waste of my money due to his teaching.
he's a jerk, but some people like him
The material in this class is easily understood if you put in a little effort. Class is laid back, and students think they can slack. Do your quizzes, learn the material, go to class, and stop complaining. Not a difficult course if you actually TRY! MT challenges you, but is VERY straight forward if you practiced! VERY SMART MAN! Don't skip class.
Awsome prof...has a great sense of humor and makes classes fun...the class was at 8:30 am, but wanted to go to his class, he really knows his stuff.
He's a jerk. Entertaining lectures, good looking. But I really don't think he cares about students learning or doing well. Any prof with a mandatory online (un re-sellable textbook) is just in it for the $$. (See also: Keller's yacht)
Funny prof, keeps you up in the class with his jokes and random clicker questions...
Interesting character... very full of himself though..
He is all funny in class but he doesn't help out his students and every year makes an impossibly hard exam that he has to bell curve the hell out of...such a jerk
Professor bell-curves everything including quizzes. A 100% quiz mark might end up at 75%. A 75% might end up at 47%!!! Puts misleading instructions on quiz questions and expects you to be "courageous" enough to ignore them.
He thinks he's the smartest guy in the world, and he just might be, but that doesn't mean he's a good teacher. Any questions I've had to ask haven't been answered, and he clearly sells his mandatory textbook just for the money. It's barely useful. I hope the school realizes this soon enough so no one else has to have him for a very important class
So Easy!
McNally is very devious, so beware. He runs a very good lecture, keeps student interest but uses his charasmatic ability to win over students Uses online textbook that had many loopholes that ruined the integrity of the course and seems very disinterested in students. I think he put intentional typos on the exam. Cannot take this man at face value.
I think everyone was a bit hard on the guy this year. His final was fair and he had everything available for us to do well on the final. If you studied you did well. Also yeah there was that whole fiasco with the quizzes, which people took advantage of but in the end he made it right. That obviously won't happen again.
If you don't like attending class and want to slack the whole term then McNally is your prof. You hardly get what he teaches because he just goes too fast and makes no sense most of the times. he just gives you things to do without helping you out. His jokes are funny but its even more funnier when you dont get a problem. I wouldnt recommend him.
In a nutshell, I didn't like his teaching style. I thought he wasn't an effective teacher and yes he bells a lot. However, the course itself is very hard to teach and super dry, so it's not completely his fault. Unfortunately he's one of the only profs teaching finance so... good luck getting another one!
Not a fan of his teaching style, he thinks to highly of himself. They bell a lot, tough course though. Class is pointless, but make sure you do all the online textbook work.
Not a fan of his teaching style. They bell a lot, tough course though. Class is pointless, but make sure you do all the online textbook work. Takes up a lot of time.
Does not really teach the material very well, goes through examples very quickly without any direction as to how to solve the problem. Overall it was a hard course. All the quizzes and final were belled, good thing as the final exam had a failing average.
This class is a case where the work you put in is the result you get. The online text is amazing, and a great tool. If you do all problems, an A+ is very attainable. He actually makes a dry course entertaining. His final is fair - once again just study and keep up with the work. If you do, you will likely get rewarded with a bell-curve as well.
Funny prof and keeps class interesting. Not the most helpful prof, will put up examples and tell the class to figure out for themselves later. At times the quizes don't reflect the material at all.
Midterm and final were fair - make sure you study online textbook questions. Wish he would talk less about his political views.
Half his class is lesson, but the other half is about his personal opinions on life and jokes. Not a useful class, and textbook was pretty bad because he made it. Only way to study are the online quizes. Wish someone told me that before i did this course.
I'm in co-op and fourth year right now but when I took finance one with him he was fine. Alot of people said not to expect an A, but thats exactly what I got. DO ONLINE SAMPLE QUIZ QUESTIONS. Hintif you click through each lesson enough there are only so many questions. Those are the final questions! The average will be a 50 and u will get belled!
Good guy. Good teacher.
Funny guy, but do not disagree with him or you are screwed. Overall not a hard prof but it is bit scary to let him remember your name.
Awful prof, can't teach and only shows videos. Makes the final so hard its impossible and even warns you that you won't be able to do some of the questions.
McNally is honestly the smartest prof that I have met at Laurier. He is funny and communicates well. His tests are hard but fair and they challenge you in a way that makes you master the subject. He is also a great mentor for the Laurier Student Investment Fund.
Horrible prof, he does not show any concern for students. Designed a whole course just to sell his useless book which doesn't even have most of the required material on the exam.
He taught the course as a lab. This structure worked very well. He gave out a problem booklet at the beginning of class and you would just work on it all class if you had questions he would come and answer them. Was very useful when preparing for exams.
does not matter what theory you are taught in class or the theory they teach you in the textbook, cause the theory that is applied on the examinations is next level. Almost impossible to get any of the qualitative questions right on the exams. The Quantitative are like quetsions you have never seen before, but just do as many questions possible
good man
?What can I say?
terrible
kind hearted fellow
he created a stupid course where students have to pay 800 dollars to teach themselves. exams are difficult and he had grudge on students for starting a petition.
McNally is the absolute worst professor I've had till date in Laurier's BBA program. For the final exam, I did all the homework questions and practiced from 3 past finals. Yet, I couldn't solve half the questions. He has created a course just to fail students. This course will bring down your GPA no matter how hard you try.. beware and prepare.
Terrible prof. Basically came to class, didnt teach anything. Just sipped his starbucks every morning. This course needs to be re-evaluated.
One of the best professors at Laurier All the HW and assignments were just like the Exam Lectures are very helpful, he is always willing to help all the students when necessary Very knowledgeable Now take that ^ and this class is the exact opposite.
Get ready to teach yourself
McNally's flipped classroom approach left a lot of students in the dark. However, that being said, he was approachable if one needed help. I skipped every lecture. Finance took a lot of time with assignments and weekly quizzes. The workbook and textbook need a major facelift as they are hard to work with. Ride the bell-curve! love this guy
Best finance prof that I've had so far during my undergraduate career. His book is very interactive and easy to understand, which makes learning the material fun. He definitely increased my interest in pursuing a career in finance. He is also very willing to help students, such as writing great reference letters.
good guy. great prof. people who don't do well in his class are just lazy.
He is honestly the best finance prof! Anoyone who does not do well in this course is just lazy!! Most of his questions on midterms and final come from the homework questions online, DO THEM! Read the online text, understand it well, do the homework, and you are guranteed an A+! This prof is amazing, such a wonderful guy! No surprises on any finals!
You end up learning everything by yourself. Some of the problems you do in his textbook's homework sections have wrong answers. I would have gotten an A+ if he knew what he was doing.
People love to hate on him, but really wasn't that bad. He structured the class so that lectures are mainly used for him asking questions for the class. In my opinion, this was the best use of time because the textbook is good and the best way to learn is by doing questions. I thought it was really easy if you put in a bit of work.
This guy is hilarious. I think he was a very fair prof. He bellcurved the exams to around 70% which was very annoying as we were all unsure about what our final grades would actually be. Students became too reliant on the testbanks and ended by being burned on the final.
Terrible. Used the class to sell his textbook, and has a formula for calculating everyone's final grade, and most people got curved down!
He gives clear instruction in an organized class. If you're willing to put in the work, he's a great prof! (he also makes Star Wars jokes)
He cares nothing about his students. All he was trying to do was not teaching you anything but trying to give you a fail. Worst prof in the university.
He is hilarious and his lecture style is great.
Litterally the best prof at Laurier. I do not understand those who do not like him. Very intelligent, caring, hillarious, easy work load. Encompasses everything. Mcnally should teach every course a Laurier.
He liked his flipped classroom learning... I don't think anybody else did.
Teaching style seemed more like an online course than a lecture course. Nice guy but his teaching style is a bit lackluster.
Not a fan of his flipped classroom style, tends to go off on tangents unrelated to the subject. Not that helpful either.
Doesn't actually teach anything. He expects you to learn everything from the textbook and only goes over examples in class without actually explaining them. Also doesn't have a great attitude towards student questions.
Amazing prof. Very funny and knowledgeable. Although people who are more HR and marketing focus may not like him and be offended by his comments, they are funny and usually truly. Very fair midterm easy to do well.
Although I did well in his class, his teaching style was extremely ineffective. His textbook is full of errors and he puts in minimal prep into his lectures (ex. he spent 10 minutes pulling up an example instead of having it ready). He is negligent about student questions and hates on WLU frequently.
Hilarious guy. People who hate on this class dont put in the effort to understand the material. The content is easy and his textbook makes learning the content enjoyable. You get to use Excel which makes the problems much easier. The only downside is that his flipped classroom style is not liked by most, but that depends on your learning style.
The flip classroom structure that McNally created is absolutely the worst - nobody goes to class because NOTHING is taught in class. He does not seem to care whatsoever about teaching students and being helpful. Word of advice for Laurier - scrap the flip classroom .... it doesnt work.
Worst prof ever. Doesn't care for students and lectures are useless. Taught myself everything - Course was not supposed to be that hard. Made me hate finance!
Always making jokes that are irrelevant to the course material, which is kind of annoying. Giving opinions about current news in an inappropriate way without fully considering student's feeling.
Prof McNally should really focus on making his classes more engaging & useful for exams - the flip classroom does not work for many students & his lectures are often laced with unecessary content
Loved his class. He is a prof that cares about the subject and tries his best to make class engaging. He does a flipped class room so learn the content ahead of time and you'll do practice problems in class which helps prepare for exam. He has a differnet opinion on political issues but that doesn't make him a bad or hateful guy.
great prof, as long as you're not lazy and go through the chapters before class you will do well.
McNally spends your class time talking about his political opinions and not teaching finance.
Is one of the worst professors I've ever met and very irresponsible!! you cannot know what you are wrong with a pop quiz, so what is the meaning of the quiz?
Unhelpful if you ask for homework help, he refuses to assist. Although he is a very intelligent man, he spends lectures preaching politics rather than teaching. He is the only professor I've ever had who you can count on for unsolicited political views class after class. Stay at home and teach yourself.
Not a good prof. He simply does not teach, which last I checked was part of his job description as a professor. I wish he cared enough to ensure students understand the content, but he doesn't. This also explains why a good chunk of the class failed the midterm.
Where do I even start? He is just not it. It is obvious he cares about finance and is a smart guy, he just chooses to go into topics and express opinions that are irrelevant to the class that have made myself and others uncomfortable. His jokes and humor I don't vibe with either and I found him very rude to communicate with.
McNally's book CFO is the one he prescribes for BU283. His book is great explaining some chapters but are plain bad in explaining others. As someone genuinely interested in finance, I don't think anyone could read chapter 18 (options and futures) and genuinely be interested in it because its explained poorly. You're better off using KhanAcademy.
Rudest professor I have ever had. Offensively mean when you try to communicate for assistance. Refuses to help in a meaningful/positive way. Has a stupid grading scheme that can curve you down if you are below the average.
All class this guy talks about stuff that is irrelevant to the course, and then when there's like 10 minutes left, he goes like "where did all the time go? ok do it by yourself at home". Your job is literally to teach this mandatory course which is key to upper year courses. You say BU283 is the best course; probably true if you dont teach it.
Perhaps he should consider teaching a course in Polital Science. He spent more time talking about politics than he did finance. The textbook that he wrote and requires you to buy is objectively the worst textbook in existence. Some chapters were decent, others were nonsensical. Course difficulty is a 3, but since you need to teach yourself, 5.
Will uses the flipped classroom style in his lectures where we mostly work on practice problems from his textbook. Exams are similar to the textbook problems, so it is easy to do well if you follow along in class.
Literally the best prof at laurier. People only hate this guy because of his political views (which I get can be annoying). The course is very easy if you put in the minimal work, only is hard if you really dont know what basic finance is.
Most of the class time he goes off-topic and expresses his political views in EVERY class. In one of my first classes, he used a lesson on tax to talk about how liberals tax too much. He uses a flipped-classroom model which is good in theory however he doesn't properly explain most of the answers to the questions he poses in class.
It surprises me how a man like William Mcnally is able to sit in his office, making 200,000 a year teaching the way he does. His lectures might as well have been office hours. He rambles for half the class about politics and his love for Elon Musk. Be prepared to teach yourself this entire course.
Not my prof for this course, but was the course coordinator and wrote all the midterms and the exams. All I am going to say is the exam this semester was brutal. The class average for the exam was a 48%. A literal fail. I have never seen a class average that low before. That's not on the students, that's his fault.
Came into the class with high hopes but was disappointed. I did well in the class but at the end of the day but would recommend avoiding if possible. Highly political views that shouldn't be at the forefront of a finance class. You use a (in my opinion) poorly written textbook he made. Get ready to teach yourself by using practice problems.
Pretty good professor, course was certainly hard given that midterms and exam required input of exact answers with no opportunities for part marks. Pokes fun at Laurier's woke culture which is refreshing to hear. If you are mildly competent and do the practice problems you are likely to do well in the course.
Really engaging in class and the expectations for assessments are clear. Manages to make lectures hilarious and everyone I know actually looks forward to his class
This professor is honestly the worst. I would not recommend taking finance at Laurier. Take it at UW and have your credit transferred. The BU283 course is horribly organized and the exam questions are nothing like the ones on assignments, quizzes, etc.. you get marked on the final answer only so there is no part marks.
Horrible.
This professor does not teach and expects you to learn all of the extremely difficult content on your own. His tests are insanely hard and the course overall is very poorly designed. If you have him in the future, good luck.
This class was just awful overall, wasn't necessarily him but he would go through questions far too quickly to learn and it could be overwhelming.
Honestly class was a hit or miss when it comes to teaching style. Gotta cram for the midterms or else you will get left behind. As long as you cram before midterms using the wileyplus textbook questions you'll get a decent grade since you get curved anyways. Other than midterms it was a decent course.
One of the worst professors at Laurier. His flipped classroom model does not work. Students who cannot SOLELY learn from his textbook are screwed. Mandatory participation and quizzes every week. Both midterms and final exam averages were in the 50s and completely different and harder than any in-class / online homework questions. Avoid if possible.
McNally gets a lot of hate, and I do understand why some may not like him. The reality is, though, that with this course you get out what you put in. His lectures aren't always helpful, and can be slow, but most of the people who complain just don't like his views. This is also understandable, but as a prof he knows what he's doing
Exams were brutal with a 44.2% final exam average. Flipped classroom model was terrible and not helpful at all. You pay to teach yourself the entire course since the profs are not concerned with teaching. Exams were blatantly unfair with questions that had nothing to do with the 100s of questions assigned for practice on FlatWorld.
If you email him a question, he will give u the worst replies. He doesn't seem to care about his students doing well. You will have to find out how to do everything on your own. Do not recommend this prof. Left class early because he had to go to Niagara Falls once and another time had a dentist appointment.
Horrible prof. Nothing more to say
Generally, most classes are focused on solving problems, but those which are lectures are amazing. By far, the professor I have had so far his lectures are super engaging. I would recommend taking bu283 with him, as others stated, averages are not that high but are curved so it does not matter.
he's just not it.
He is the best prof I had at WLU so far; his lectures are great, and it's easy to do well if you even try a tiny bit; since it's all curved, you just need to get the 60s on midterm/final, and you will do well.
Never have been bored going to his Financial Management 1 classes and honestly like hearing new logical perspectives on current events than hearing traditional POVs
McNally is a gem, course is very clear - just do homework and assignments ahead of time and it's an easy 12. Grades likely won't look amazing on paper but you'll ride a nice curve. Ask him about his views on immigration and climate change.
The professor's lectures are engaging, but the class is tough. Attend all classes, use the textbook, and try unstuck ai for study prep - it really helped me keep up. The exams are challenging, but the curve makes it doable.
I've never written a Rate My Prof review before...I am here so I can warn everyone. This man does not care how you do in the class, is very rude when you email him and is overall a very unapproachable person. Exams are extremely unfair considering he DOES NOT TEACH in his lectures. Bruce is a better professor if you're taking this course.
