He is incredibly full of himself and for an Intro to Sociology course, it is incredibly difficult. The highest grade in the class overall was a B+... and only one kid got that. Only take his class PASS/FAIL!!!
WhenI actually did go to class he talked about a UFO cult he"researched"mmhmm. Liked to put down UofM a lot,yet hes teaching here.Save yourself and take it with someone else. Most of the class time my friends and I hit our heads against the wall

The class was not that bad. The work load was a bit excessive, but your it's college, dude. Not all classes are going to be easy. I got an A in the class, but I studied and did all the reading on time. He was arrogant and pompous; it made the class funny.
Are you guys nuts? This was one of the easiest classes I've ever had! McNeece is funny and entertaining, and his exams are very very easy. Taking him again for 423 this semester.
this prof is so full of himself...if his head doesn't pop sometime this semester from being so inflated i would be very surprised...his lectures are easy but it is the fourth week of class and we are already like 6 chapters behind.. :-(
He is such a liberal that it is not even funny. If you don't agree with his beliefs, you will hate this class!!! Even his tests are about what he thinks!!
Do not take this class! Class discussions are worthless, we learn nothing. Professor speaks very slowly and goes off on long, painful tangents. Save money and read the book at home, you'll get more out of it.
We are one whole book behind and the semester is half over. He goes on tangents for a whole class period and talks about our subject for the last 10-15 mins. No comments written on essay exam, so no way of knowing what is wrong with it.

kinda hard to get a grasp of the class.. he does go off on tangents.. and doesn't tell you nething abt the exams..
This was by far the worst teacher I have ever had. He does not talk about the subject he will cover in the exams, makes ridiculous and discrimatory points about society in general. He should not be the one teaching this class, since he does not take anybody's opinions but his own. AVOID HIM!!!!
One thing I found out over the course of this semester, the harder I tried in this class the worse I did. The first book I read in its enirty and got a 75...the second I read the first 3 chapters and got a 94...I just answered each question like I thought he would (I pretended to be Michael Moore).
ive never seen a guy with so much egoism and sarcasm. terrible and boring professor, makes simple things so complicated and talks as if he was a british prime minister. His test are all mc and there's only a couple of them. Notes and lectures are not clear and u have to rely on your common sense.
This man stayed constanly behind. He makes you write a paper w/ 5 other people of his choosing. If you get a bad group, you do all the work like I did. I got a B out of the class, but this man is the worst professor I have encountered in my college career and I am a senior.

Okay, he was not THAT bad! All you have to do is read everything he assigns and try to remember what you read. Its hard to do but if you do it you'll get an "A" on the exams. His lectures were pretty amusing imo. Also be sure to read over your notes a couple times before the test.
He offers no extra credit, but he doesnt care if you go to class or not, its pretty much hard to get an A, because no one i sat near did, but i did poorly and managed to pull of a C. i would say look for someone easier, but dont neccessarily avoid at all costs
this man looks like a clown and acts like one too. he wears these tennis shoes that appear to be clownish. they are a bright yellow. nice sense of humor but somewhat disorganized with the material. exams are multiple choice straight from the book. lecture is pointless... unless you want to be amused by his clown-like persona.
The man takes forever to spit out a sentence. Most of the time in class is filled with silence. His lectures hardly cover what's being read in the book or what's on the exams. Pretty much the only class I skipped.
This professor is super easy. All you have to do is go to class. I didn't read any of the books and got an A. I don't know what you all are talking about but I would definately take him for Soc 201. Also, he's really funny!
Will not let you out of class early for anything. Other than that he was very good. Class project turned out to be a lot of fun. Took Soc of Religion. Take lots of notes.
This is by far the worst professor i have ever had! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! The class average for the exams were 80% and he said it was too easy! He does not want his students to do good .. and he only cares about his own personal views and does not care what the students think. i normally get good grades I am hopeing to just make a B-.
I agree 100% with the person below. His lectures are so hard to follow. Theres no order in the way he teaches. You dont know whats relevant for tests & whats not. No studyguides. No extra credit. Tests are confusing and hard. I think his book was a waste of $. We hardly used it & it was pointless to study when it came to tests. Dont take him.

Dont take this guy. His lectures are interesting but they hardly have anything to do with his tests. His tests are written to be as confusing as possible and his questions are so unclear. Horrible horrible. He takes the most simple and logical information and turns it into the most confusising/hard concept in the world. Not fair at all.

Wow was this a challenging course. I'm a straight-A student and even I had a difficult time with this one. I did better on the exams (3 exam and an essay) if I didn't study. McNeece is very blunt and straightforward and outright honest with everyone: you don't get the grade you expect. Prepare extensively for this course; he's good, but difficult.
his class was the hardest class all semester. his lecture were a little interesting from time to time but his test and grading is horrible. he gives three tests all semester and you cant even understand what the question is asking, even if you did, all the answers are soo alike youll almost fail by studying. so much of his lectures are on the test

There is much to be desired, but he will help you. Class time, special lectures and note taking is important to your success. No, early dismissal, he sets his watch, very critical and doesn't grade on a curve no matter how hard you work attendance is a MUST and tests can be confusing-take notes study them! Nice but arrogant as he is flamboyant!
If you're taking his class in an attempt to learn the material, re-think your decision. This is by far your worst option when choosing between professors. I may have dropped the class in time, but someone else I knew in the class stayed and was told the highest grade among the students was a C+ that semester.
Go to class, take notes and read the book and you will be fine. Alot of material you need to keep up with. Essay tests are easy if you study. Good Luck! You can get an A, I did!
He is hilarious! His class is great, really interesting!! But you HAVE to go to class AND read the book. If you do so, you'll be fine. And take good notes and lots of examples.If you send him an email, be overly polite and treat him like God and he'll be helpful. His class is really interesting even if he doesnt really cover all the readings given.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I am a junior and never had such a pompous, ego centered, worthless professor. He will not help you or give you extra credit. Basically all the BAD reviews you read here are TRUE. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS, if you value your GPA at all.....
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!He will decide at the beginning if you are worthy of a C and if you piss him off or miss class he will FAIL you. I am a junior and 3 other juniors in class all got failed!We did all assignments and attended class so why would he do this? BECAUSE HE IS A MONSTER. HE ruined my 3.2GPA AVOID AT ALL COSTS if you value your GPA.
THE WORST GUY EVER. WASTE OF $$,GPA KILLER,VERY RUDE,DOESN'T CARE ABOUT STUDENTS AT ALL WHATSOEVER! I'm a good student and study hard but people like him shoudn't be allowed to teach. In order to get an A, you have to: memorize the book, his chicken scratch notes, and every word that comes out of his mouth. Tell everyone about him, spread the word!
I'm not sure why all these negative ratings, but I enjoyed the class and got an A. Tests were essay, so he knew that you learned and one group paper. Not difficult, just read the material and participate in class. Why skip classes, this is college...you're here to learn something.
If you show up for class and pay attention to the lectures, the class is not that difficult. He offered 3 extra credit lectures. The tests are poorly written and he gets off topic but overall it wasnt bad. He is very knowledgable about the subject matter. If you dont bother to go to class, then dont expect a good grade.
take good notes and you wont even need to buy the books. final is not cumulative and based solely off the Sugrue text.
Ok, the comments on this page about this man are wrong and their posters, incredibly lazy. This guy was absolutely great. If you take his class I highly recommend you get a digital voice recorder and record his lectures in addition to taking notes. I only got a B because I bombed a test due to preocupation with personal issues. Take this guy.
Mr.Mcneece is truly a boring teacher he doesn't put anything in the lecture to make his students want to learn from him,he is truly a teacher who does not care about his profession, if he did more students would pass his class. I think McNeece is awesome, he keeps things interesting,and is good about talking clearly and slowly so you can keep up with notes. As long as you follow along, take notes and read the book you'll get a fair grade.
I'm not sure what all the whiner's are complaining about. This instructor was very clear with what he expected of his students, and the exams were straight-forward. He's understanding, intelligent, and a very good teacher.
I love McNeece! for the most part, his lectures are informative and often funny! his exams are straight multiple choice, which is nice, and as long as you attend every class, the exams will be relatively easy. read, go to class, enjoy!
Not sure what to think about him. He replaced our first soc prof. and im not quite sure who i'd rather have. seemed funny at first but is now quite dull. gets off topic easily. but he's doing the best he can for taking a class over right before midterm. i blame the sociology dept as a whole..

He was very interesting to listen to during lecture. It wasn't that clear with the paper he has you write what exactly he wants you to write on. That's about my only complaint with the class. Other then that his class was interesting.
Very nice guy and can be interesting at some times, but he runs a pretty inconsistent class. His exams are pretty hard and seem to vary from notes to book to a combination. The one paper he assigned was very vague and he never gave it back. We had a different book than he lectured from and I feel many exam questions were not covered.

He is a nice person, but he sucks at teaching, tough grading and his project is so ridiculously vague that you just cant pass it. I wouldn't recommend him, if you can take another professor.
Sociology of Religion. Great class. Taught well. Go to class. 2 papers and your religion project. Use your notes, and ALL books on your paper for each question, and you will get an A. Great Class. The project was work, but interesting and worth it.
Great teacher. Kept class entertaining. I was worried about the tests but did well once I became familiar with his test style. Come to class, take notes, do the reading, and it will pay off. Paper was a little bit confusing, but he was willing to read rough drafts and give you feedback.
Cool guy, knows alot but class is a free for all with no structure mostly for notes. Exams are notes and lectures and the questions are very difficult. The paper assignment was not clear and did not provide clear instructions as everyone almost did something different when it was a universal project. I probably wont do as well I would have hoped.
Honestly the worst professor I've ever had. This guy lectures about whatever he feels like and it has nothing to do with the class at all. Only 3 tests and an assignment that he doesn't explain. No help out of class, it was basically his life story for a semester. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
He is very condescending. Hard to take notes from because he goes off topic frequently. Never had control of class, people were always talking while he was and he never said anything to them. It was distracting! Not clear at all on what he wanted from the paper and was never available outside of class. I wouldn't take him again.
I had this prof twice and wanted to hate him at first when I read the first text, until he asked the class if anyone thought the text was biased. Which it was. He was responsive yet amicable toward my uncompromising dissection of our reading material. In my opinion, that automatically made him much more fair than most SOC Profs one might encounter.

This guy is a disaster. I am a pretty good student when it comes to tests and note-taking but this guy goes out of his way to make it difficult. And then he just stands there and laughs when someone asks him to explain what he's talking about. The paper is impossible to do well on. I do not recommend him at all.
This guy is just not a good teacher. He gets off topic all the time, doesn't go over readings, and is really difficult to take notes from. The test are hard because he doesn't give a study guide and for the paper, well, I'm an A student and a good writer and I got a C on it. Not clear at all. I would NOT recommend him at all!
This class was so boring. Was off topic a lot, tests were super long and we never knew what to study for. The one project he gave out was so vague and never gave it back. His class was just all over the place. I can honestly say I learned nothing from his class.
If you want to take this class here's my advice: drink an energy drink before class and literally write down EVERY word he says. Your notes will write the papers for you. On a positive note, the group projects were very interesting to watch. Don't expect an easy A.
My lord was he a awful teacher he is snooty, stuck up and always thinks he is right. If you want to get a half way decent grade take someone else trust me
This was probably the worst professor I have ever had. His lectures were boring and he often rambled about things that had nothing to do with the topic. If I ever asked him for help he spoke to me like I wasn't able to comprehend what he was saying basically like I was stupid. Probably the worst professor to take at this school.

I liked the group project and he encourages you to think but if you don't have prior interest in the subject he will fail to inspire you. Avoid him if you can.
He is very knowledgeable and made a very interesting class, but not always very clear with what is important to learn. One had to pay a lot of attention (and think a lot) to find the answers.

His tests are really easy if you read the chapters and take lecture notes, plus glance at the supplementary material. He does have a paper that's pretty hard and confusing, but his aides give enough help that you can do at least mediocre. He's very boring though, and goes off topic a lot. Overall, an alright class.
He could care less if his students fail. This is an intro class and he assigns a massive project with a 12 pg research paper. He doesn't even grade it himself he has a former student do it. The only reason I am passing the class is because the SI leader cares more than he does. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!
This man is insanely boring. His lectures are enough to get you a great nap. He is rude & consistently treated a special needs student terribly, making fun of his questions. Horribly long research paper that has nothing to do with the subject; useless Tests were average in difficulty, but with his lectures you don't know what he wants you to learn
I think this man has lost his sense of teaching. He knows a lot about the subject and has a strong background in the field. For an introductory course DO NOT take him, he has a great assumption that you know as much as he does. If you are working on the essay, seek out someone that has done it. If you take the class note all of his rambles down.

He does talk about his personal life a lot, but as an example that helps clarify his lessons. A lot of the times he picks the main points of the lesson from the textbook to clarify and talk about. He really focuses on the overall idea, so you'll have to read the chapter yourself. Average grade in his class is a B
taking this intro class freshman year, I didn't really know what to expect. However, I took decent notes in class and reviewed the chapters before the exams and aced them. He will tell anecdotes throughout class but they help explain the material. He incorporated humor and encouraged questions. I would definitely take him again.
Definitely a great lecturer! However you have to read the chapters, and come to class. If you enjoy class discussions this is the teacher for you. Very easy to distraction though.
He's extremely boring, basically thinks you know all the material already for an intro level course. He rambles a lot so it's never clear what to study for the exams and the final project is a huge pain the ass involving a map of Detroit and finding a list of roughly 50 places on that map. If you can take someone else please do.
I would not recommend taking this class unless you want to see your gpa plummet. I received As in all my classes expect for this one. Professor McNeece is knowledgable and when lecturing he pauses for students to note the important ketpyword and also speaks at a rate where you can take donw notes. His class consists of reading assignments, essay exams, and a couple of papers. He was very intersting but boring lectures.
He is one of those people who gains too much knowledge in sociology until they believe in their own terms and content. He requires a book but never uses it. He lectures from his own notes, which are irreverent to actual material. He is willing to waste 3hrs on a single definitions. vague exams regardless if you study or not.. this class is a gamble
I don't think Prof. McNeece necessarily has a knack for teaching however, he's very passionate about Soc. If you skip class or never miss you still need to read the book just to get a glimpse into what he's talking about. McNeece is easy but his lectures suck. You have no idea what this man is ever talking about! He refuses to do power point lectures and just talks the whole time. He skips from topic to topic and it is impossible to take notes. However, he is a really lenient grader a 85-100 is an A in his class so that's good!
Where do I begin? Professor McNeece was not that bad, but he is a tough grader. He takes up the class time on just one definition, and gets mad when students are late to class, when he is a about 5 to 10 minutes late every class period. The only thing I liked about this class was the book he assigned and Heather the SI leader. She really rocked!
