good easy teacher! i recommend him. he will joke around with you but nothing offensive. you give like 4 speeches plus a group project but it is easy though. grades pretty easy. quiz after every two chapters but you also have a group quiz right after then your done for the day!
Fun class, four speeches through out semester, two group presentations, and easy quizzes.
He was a very personable guy. His tests were extremely easy as long as you read or skimmed through the chapters. (And they were graded on a curve). 4 speeches, gave deserving grades, make sure you're prepared. 2 group projects, pretty easy, have to give Power Point presentation and do community service as a group. More work than thought there'd be
Nice guy, understands that not every student is a public speaker. He grades for effort not actual performance. 4 speaches, 2 group projects, GROUP tests (from book) 1 paper and a few other opportunities for extra points in case speach flops. Good teacher, cares about students getting through the class. HIGHLY RECOMMEND, esp. for us non-speakers.
I would say this teacher is of average quality, but how interesting can you really make a communications class?! There are 4 speeches which definitely need devotion and planning for. Quizzes are simple if you review the chapter summaries from the book. Most people in the class recieved and a or b.
Great teacher and works with you if you need help. He understands that it is difficult for students to speak in front of the class. But if you prepare and practice your speeches you will do fine, he grades fairly.
I love Mr. Neff! He is very understanding. He is always willing to help you, he is fun, not to mention he even has a hot wife. It is easy to pass his tests, all you have to do take notes, and read. He is recommended!
Not helpful. Better Com profs out there
He is so nice, that some people take him for granted. Make sure you have note cards for your speech, and follow directions. He is a really good professor. But, if you don't show up for class and make an attempt to turn in your assignment, then that's a different story.
DO NOT BE LATE TO HIS CLASS!!!he takes points from your grade and if you happen to miss class he requires that you bring in a written excuse or else he takes points from grade.
This class will help get rid of your fear of speaking in public. Take it!!
His class is generally really easy. The only hard part is going up in front of everyone. Hes really understanding if something comes up in your life and miss something. The only thing I would recommend is to NOT be late.
Really good teacher. Had a personal problem come up, and he was very understanding. Quizzes are super easy, and final is a speech. Very fun and interesting class. Highly recommend this teacher!
He is an easy teacher, but your attendance it mandatory. If you follow the directions he gives you, you will pass. don't miss any assignments because he will drop your grade.
I loved his class! He really helps you get over your fear of public speaking. If you take him in the summer you have a speech a week along with 6 fairly simple quizzes. Two group projects and one in a community service one. I would definitely recommend him to anyone especially non public speakers.
This is one of the worse professors ive ever had. He gives way too much work for a summer class. He also makes us do a Community service project which has nothing to do with COM! He was also an a##hole during most of the speeches. HE just looked like he was in a bad mood. ITS COM101! its an introductory course! he expected us to be expert speakers.
Great and easy teacher. If you don't show up to class or are late don't expect to be getting a good grade. He teaches well and his tests are super easy. HIGHLY suggested you take comm with him.
theres no way to not pass this class, all you have to do is show up and do your speeches. no big deal! the quizes are super easy and he is a nice guy.
Gives too many assignments. Expects way too much research and prep for a beginners speech class. Had to attend and evaluate a speech, which isn't so easy if you don't attend church. Also expects big group project involving community service. Grades on a curve!
Okay professor, lots of work for a regular speech class. His tests are easy, right out of the book. You get docked points if you're absent or late, so be on time!
Great professor! Knows how to captivate students. Always keeping students interest in lectures. Answers all questions to the very detail. Speeches in class are not difficult. Course work will need to be completed to get a good grade. Over all EASY! and FUN
I would NOT recommed! he is actually really RUDE! he seriously falls asleep during your speech!! and he looks at the floor or ceiling he DOESNT pay attention to the speakers, i dont know how hes teaching COMMUNICATION because he is NOT a professional!! and im sure everyone in my class would AGREE!
Comment below is so true! hes rude when we were giving our speeches and he does fall asleep i saw him!!! and he makes class difficult with a ton of work and idk why but he never gives you the grade you deserve he never says anything possitive in order to improve your speech he just takes random points off. i regret taking his class sooooo much :(
lots of work, the speeches are ok but he makes it so difficult because he expects so much and its a clas for fist time speakers. Hes boring and gives students mean looks all the time its weird. hes always talking about his wife and personal life kinda a waste of time because we have to rush through class. he seems careless about students.
Mr Neff is a good teacher. His class is fun and he is nice. Just do the assignments and he is fair with your grade. He doesn't expect you to be a speech right away. At least try your hardest and don't miss his classes. You will get docked points for being absent
Avoid! Neff is something else. Class itself is not hard, but Neff makes it way harder than what really is - too much work (some of which has nothing to do with the class). He is horrible during speach, if he happens to be awake he would look bored and mean. Never gives students credit or tell them they did well. Overall fair, just can't teach well.
took his class during the summer and i knew it would be difficult because its short but he makes it so hard! its annoying took up all my with homework and reading because he never covered the book in class . I would not take his class and he is rude to students and unhelpful, I wouldnt even ask questions because i did once and he was a jerk!
Can I person get anymore rude than Neff? Not helpful to students, only thing he has on mind is how and where from to take some points from you! Dont bother asking a question, he would not answer; endless boring stories about his family, and you learn nothing from him. Extremly annoying! Waist of time!
I think Neff is the best at what he does. He gives timed open book tests online, and they are still challenging even if you're using your book. He does offer extra credit. He's a bit strict. He doesn't point out your strong points, only your negative points. If you want to be good, and improve yourself in public speaking, take this class.
Neff had an overwhelming number of assignments (group projects, speech evaluation papers, 5 tests, outlined in the syllabus) and thinks we are already professional speakers. Don't brush off his class too much and you'll pass. I don't recommend him, I would have taken someone else.
Neff was a funny nice proffessor. I took him over the summer and i A's that class. Only 4 speeches. first one was not graded. You have fun in that class and you learn a lot.
Ok, so I took him as a first year speaker and he SO expects way more than he gets. I aced his class but he definitly requires way more than other teachers. He can be rude sometimes and very boring most of the time. but overall.. just an irritating class
Mr. Neff is a very good professor. I highly recommend him. Make sure you're always present to his class. He gives plenty of time to practice your speeches. Always participate during class discussion.
Mr. Neff is a very good professor and always on time. Expect easy quiz and read the book and group work.
Mr. Neff is a good professor. He helps students to understand concepts of communication and applies them to the real world. He's funny as well. If you study enough, you'll do well on the individual quizzes, but your group has to study too to help you do well on the group quizzes. I don't like giving speeches, but he made if fun.
Summer Class with him is hell i was getting barely any sleep so when he tells you whats due do it as soon as he tells you about it in summer term its fast
Took class as a 4 week summer class. This is a VERY fast paced class and is true, you have a huge work load and not much sleep. However, I learned a lot and using the communications lab is a great help. He was a good and fair teacher.
Not a fan of Bill Neff. Lots of unnecessary work, the quizzes are hard, and you loose 20pts off of participation if you are late or absent once. Yet he is late almost every class himself. I didnt learn anything out of this class and i had a 4.0 before it. But if you like doing projects with classmates on your weekends, then this is for you.
I did not learn anything from this class. It was alot of unnecessary work and the quizes are hard. Mr. Neff is very helpful when it comes to questions you might have but He doesnt really prepare you for speaking infront of the class. If you dont mind the work take the class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! He doesnt lecture when you're in class and expects you to be an expert when you do your speches. He teaches an individual COM 101 class by making you group up with other students and do group tests/group speches. Professor Neff requires you to do community service and go to tutoring to pass his class. He's a very hard grader
Professor Neff is an average teacher. I never really understood most of his lectures, you dont have to. Doing all your work, speeches and studying for tests by reading your book is all there is to the class., which is on angel he doesnt remind you of, he expects you to constantly look on angel for assignments.
The class was all online and self-driven. The professor was only there to grade quizzes and assignments.
4 WK SUM 13 TONS work 4 speech, 4 test(easy do study guides) 2 Group Proj(4hr comm serv. & pres. and 1 chapt pres) Do early chapt to present 1st! He gives them a break over other groups. ALSO have to go see a public speaker & write a paper 3-5 pages. Have to get paper checked by writing lab. MAKE SURE YOU HIT SPEECH GRADING POINTS & TIME LIMITS.
Hybrid class. Very easy, but boring. Few online assignments. Attendance is mandatory. 4 speeches. 4 online tests. 1 term paper.
This teacher is very textbook heavy. Only has a discussion/test for each chapter. No outside help posted. Only the book to learn from. I pulled off a B because he grades his essays easy. Fast pace if thinking about the 8-week, thats what I took. Two chapters a week + two weeks to study for exam. Average class I suppose.
Professor Neff will help if you ask for it and responds to emails fast. He is very tough on the time of the speeches and you have to do them but it gets easier as you go. I took it hybrid and was an easy A. There are 4 tests and they are online so you can use google and the book. You can also take every test twice. I definitely recommend him.
Textbook heavy. Half of my class is online, so the assignments and tests were online. Once a week we review the chapter and meet with groups to finish assignments
HALF ONLINE HALF IN CLASS. You meet once a week for an hourish and a MAJORITY of classes will be watching speech presentations and not on reviewing fundamentals of speech delivery or reviewing textbook material. Personally, I would rather pay for a class where the professor TEACHES and not expects you to learn it on your own. #salty #retakingit
Prof. Neff was great! He was entertaining and passionate. The class itself was hybrid with a weekly assignment, a midterm and final. There is a group project you work on all year, which is easy if you have good partners. I would absolutely take another class with him!
I took COM 101 over summer for the 4 week course, it's pretty intense. There are a lot of assignments, and the tests are based on the book so reading is a must. He does provide a study guide so you at least know what to look for as you read. It was an intense class but overall it wasn't too bad or hard.
As long as you do the presentations, outlines, and quizzes, you should do just fine. Let him know if you have any issues on your assignments DURING THE WEEK. He will not respond on weekends. Gets back super quick when you message him during the week.
Easy class and clear grading criteria and schedule.
Responds fairly quickly to emails. Easy discussions, two assignments a week, couple open book exams, and must do four hours of volunteer work for the final paper. Overall, easy class.
Took COMM 102 online. I have to say, it was the most organized course I've ever taken. We weren't required to purchase a paperback textbook, as the Cengage course contained an e-version. You should be smooth-sailing in this class - so long as you keep up with the assignments. And don't forget to get your volunteer hours in!
I took his hybrid class, six-week session over the summer, it very fast pace . Attendance counts towards your grade. All assignments are online as well as the midterm and final. Two speeches in class and a group project. Take this class by itself in the summer or take the regular 16 week session.
The first week has a lot of busy work, but if you get past it the gist of this 8-week class is two chapters a week and small assignments for each. There is a LARGE paper to due that you need to volunteer 4 hours through CSN for, do outside and in-book research for, and needs to be submitted to the writing center before he will even look at it.
Great professor! I took this 8 week online corse and of course there is going to be a lot of work because it is an 8 week corse but it is SUPER easy. The assignments are due every week so you have a whole week to complete each assingment. You have to volunteer for 4 hours but it's super easy and clear grading. I WOULD RECOMMEND!!
He is an excellent professor, he respond right away when you have question. Very nice! Everything is in detail clearly.
At first I thought this class would be my worst enemy. In the end I think I learned so much I didnt know before and I really enjoyed the class overall. Do not miss or forget speeches bc those make up the majority of your grade. If you do the assignments and follow the rubric you will have no problems. He is particular about how he grades.
Assigns a lot of work from the book. Just do your work and you'll be fine, however he gives NO feedback and takes forever to grade so you don't have any idea where to improve. Doesn't respond to emails. His criteria for giving speeches is also ridiculous, he asks a lot for a short speech. Pick someone else.
Professor Neff is rude with replies, only answers a couple hours of the morning only on weekdays. Isnt understanding with online school issues. There is so much busy work
Weekly discussion. Too much busy work. He doesn't grade the speeches until weeks later so I have no idea what to improve on. As long as you do the speeches, quizzes, and discussions you'll be fine. I don't recommend.
omg. this professor makes us do soooo much unnecessary busy work. I am taking the 8 week course, and I legit have 10 different assignments for his class every week. speeches have to be performed with a group of 10!!! I haaaaate this. 4 speeches, hella busy work, group projects, hes very very strict about everything. take somebody else
Gives some of the most outrageous assignments I've ever seen. Not only are there several (useless) assignments every week, but we were required to give speeches. In the SYLLABUS he states that if you get below a 1 on ONE speech, you will fail the entire course and the speeches require 9 people or you get a 0, meaning you fail the course entirely...
Not specific on what textbook is needed. Very anal about how work is supposed to be done and very homework heavy. First day and already had 10 assignments due by the first week. Speeches are to be in a audience of 9 or more and a lot of detractors if speech is not done correctly. Syllabus was not thorough at all. -10/10 would not recommend.
I am confused 90% of the time in his online class I don't feel like I am doing anything right and he doesn't respond to my questions very much
The most disappointing professor I've had. Grading is not actually based off the syllabus and is very arbitrary instead, professor is quite unresponsive and unhelpful, and a ridiculous number of 9 people is required for each speech. Assignments are often unclear and are mainly just busy work. Extremely frustrating class, I wouldn't recommend.
Student beware. This class has so many unnecessary assignments for a COMMUNICATIONS course. Is not thorough on explanations. Requirements are ridiculous. Requires an audience of 9 or you get a 0. If you get a 0 on one speech you fail the whole class. Will not let you change topics, so choose wisely. Would rather you fail than compromise.
He is terrible at communicating and does not explain assignments well enough. His requirements for an online class is ridiculous.
I took an eight-week course, so the workload was hefty and took many hours for me to do. He is strict on grading and has stringent guidelines for all the speeches and outlines we had to do.
I messaged him with a problem, he told me to let him know if an assignment needed to be unlocked. It did, I messaged/emailed him multiple times over the span of days. No reply. I texted. Number didn't work. Called. Someone else answered. No office hours listed, no office #. Meanwhile, he graded an assignment that he'd told me to resubmit???
This professor is abysmal. He makes absolutely no sense with the work he gives and outlines he provides. By far the worst professor I have EVER come across. Should be stripped of his degree and teaching license. 0/10 would not recommend Mr. Neff.
He always responded in a timely manner. As long as you do the work and put in the effort he's a great instructor. A little slow to grade. Other than that definitely worth taking his class.
The material you learn itself is not difficult. It is made difficult by the sheer amount of technical issues and lack of communication that this professor has. There were constant communication errors (if he would even respond in the first place) and technical problems that confused the whole class. Easy material, difficult class.
Easy class, but very online savvy. Everything is done online. Even though you do not have to purchase a book you will have to buy an oline course which cost me around $130. You must be very persistent with it, there are many technical issues with it. Cost me my grade because an issue was not fixed. Be prepared for group project and start early.
Worst course ever with Dr. Neff online. Unclear desc., grading, & expectations. Unresponsive to emails. Poor communication in a comm. course. Late grading, no feedback to improve. Vague materials & syllabus. Disappointing experience that hindered learning. Neff needs to address issues & provide better student support.
does not make any sense or post directions or responds
Easy but waste of time. Expect 8 plus assignments a week. Passive aggressive with comments didnt regrade some assignments. Instructions are terrible and dont make sense .Total cost almost $200. Speeches require a live group. Dont waste the $30 for speech prep app. Syllabus says 1800 points for course, came out to over 6k points. Busy useless work.
-Unclear Instructions
Online class: Make sure to read all slides, If you do the work, you will pass the class. You will have a group project with five other people. Make. Sure, you reach out to your classmates beforehand. Also, make sure you communicate with Neff. He does take a while to respond, so be aware of that. You will have to buy an online textbook.
Very unorganized class. I was emailing the professor almost daily with questions about the assignments. He uses stukent and it honestly easy work just SO MUCH of it. He requires you to record yourself for speeches.. Its an easy class just a little stressful with the workload.. Only way you would fail is if you did not try at all.
Class was easy but you have to not be lazy, like at all. Even though it is online, it is actually quite hard to keep up with the work if you are procrastinating. You will also need to record yourself in front of a live audience for some assignments. However, he doesn't do a lot of quizzes or exams, and when there is, it is really easy to do.
Don't turn in anything late, it will deduct you 10% every day its late. Very passive aggressive and a tough grader. Despite being online the instructions are not very clear, the work load is massive if you forget for even a day. The work is busy work that I personally did not learn from. Finally, nothing is opened early...EVER
There was so much unnecessary coursework. The assignments are extremely easy but the workload was pretty steep. There are also 2 speeches and he is somewhat strict on grading them but if you practice only a few times and adhere to the criteria, you'll do great.
This professor's grading was extremely strict and unclear. Instructions were often vague, and he rarely responded to emails. He assigns 8–9 assignments weekly and requires a $130 textbook. Future students should be aware of the heavy workload and lack of communication. As this only left me with a sense of anxiety every week!!!
This guy does not respond to any emails whatsoever. This class is on autopilot and is run by AI grading. Respectfully, you are teaching yourself with a mandatory $130 online course and book. You get a better education from watching youtube videos.
Did not reply to any emails. Very unclear instructions (some assignments were just copy pasted from past classes im assuming, with wrong due dates and misinformation). Most of your grade comes from the stukent assignments, which aren't even graded by him.
This class is very easy just tons of work honestly. I get its an 8 week class so the heavy work load was somewhat understandable. Most of the instructions weren't clear enough and often confusing. Prof doesn't really communicate well, and pretty much students had to rely on each other for questions we wanted to ask him. Maybe prof is over it? lol.
