This class is AWESOME. I was skeptical about taking it at first because it was all that was left. If you want to be moved, engaged, and basically make your experience at SDSU worth it- William Nericcio IS the prof to take. He will open your mind...as long as you let him. books REQUIRED you must read majority of it/them. HE IS AMAZING. nuff said
You want a class that actually lets you use your brain in a creative way? This is it. He challenges you to think out of the box and look at the world in a different way. Sounds corny I know but it is so true. Just read the books he assigns (some of them are comics) and the class is a breeze. No cell phone zone. He'll freak out.
Professor Nericcio's enthusiasm is infectious! He is clearly passionate about his work, but sometimes he let the discussions stray too far away from effective discussion and the class just started rambling. I would like to hear more of his ideas to guide the class. Weekly writing journal becomes a chore, but freedom with seminar paper is great.
LOTS OF READING. New book every week or so. Even though there's a lot of reading, the texts are mostly interesting. It's in your best interest to go to class, takes attendance and has the occasional pop quiz. Get to watch a film ever so often as well. Not an easy class but if you have the time to read and write you'll be fine. Offers extra cred
absolutely loved him! my favorite class of the semester. go to class, he clarifies a lot of the books, which you need to read. a definitely engaging teacher, shows some pretty good movies. even office hours is worth it! highly recommend this class. as long as you do the work and sincerely try youll get a B or A.
This class was awesome but beware because you must do ALL the reading or you will fail miserably. Must be willing to put in effort. Overall Nericcio is a cool dude and a little crazy. Defiantly one of my favorite teachers.
Favorite class this semester! The professor is just as motivating and engaging while his lectures and assignments are quite an interesting take on the course. Though he does seem to have high expectations, these serve as nice challenges. Would recommend if you want a different experience from the usual. It's only difficult if you don't try.
Such a great class! Do the work and listen to the lectures and you will walk away with a new take on literature. He is one of the few lecture professors that actually care about his students and how they are doing in the class. There is a lot of reading but this class is worth it! Without a doubt one of my favorite professors!
The craziest teacher I ever had. A really unique and interesting class. Make sure you attend class, take notes, and READ!! If you do, you are sure to do well in the class. Random reading quizzes, two papers, and a final. Go to his office hours and make yourself known, he LOVES that and he will really help you when you need the guidance.
The guy is pretentious. He self-depricates and then talks about how he isnt cool and how he thinks so differently then all the other professors out there. If you're 18 and think its cool if a professor cusses, then take this class. Lots of reading, and not hard to manage a good grade if you go to every class and pay attention
This class is not for English majors, adult students, or anyone capable of thinking for him or herself. Nericcio expects you to think outside of the box...as long as it's within the limits of HIS box. He grabs onto an idea, and has trouble letting it go, even if the book/film doesn't exactly fit with it. Frustrating. Genuinely cares, though.
This was a cultural studies class, one of the best I've ever taken. Nericcio picked great texts and was always available to answer questions. He knows the subjects so well. And he gets the best out of people by ensuring students are praised for their efforts. Overall I'm stoked to have him as the head of our department (MALAS)!
A very cool, eccentric and captivating instructor. One of the few professors who actually cares about their students and truly invests into their learning experience. He's very open to student feedback and can adapt his teaching style to respond to his student's needs. I really enjoyed taking his class.
This was an excellent cultural studies experience. The readings led to many outstanding discussions on a wide range of topics.Dr. Nericcio did a great job of presenting material, and students in the class were equal to the task in adding their experiences and insights. This is a credit to the class organization. Thanks for a great learning environment
Not only does this prof capture your interest, but he engages you with his intellect and encourages you to dive deep into the work. If you want to engage in stimulating discussions and challenge yourself to find deeper meaning within the materials, take his class. If you prefer to slide by and have your work (& thinking) done for you, go elsewhere.
What a class!! I love love love love love this professor, and not just because he's cool but that he is the perfect person to study literature with. His lectures-- you'll actually want to be there and on time to hear them. So so so beautiful. The materials (films, books, comics) and the class discussions are so great. Get into his summer class NOW!
Profe Nericcio has the ability to engender a passion for literature within all his students, not just the Eng & Comp Lit majors. He evaluates literature in film, music, art, books, comics, theater, graffiti. Profe Nericcio is a master lecturer. His insight and research is incomparable. He's The Best lecturer at SDSU, hands down. Thank you, Profe.
Great variety of thought provoking material!
Does NOT deserve that pepper. He is pretentious and somewhat obsessed with himself. But he is smart and is open to different teaching styles. He does make you buy his own book. There are a lot of books to read throughout the semester, but I read only a few and passed with a good grade. He's not a bad teacher, but can be closed to different ideas.
I had to take this class but it became my favorite because of Bill. His "text books" are an awesome collection of novels/short stories/poetry & he actually reads your papers & draws doodles on them. His office hours were epic and he's always willing to help - even after you graduate. I took 3 of this guy's classes & I wasn't even an Eng major.
Dr. Nericcio is a genius; his intellect will make you view the world in ways you never imagined. His style of teaching will blow your mind. One of the few classes where I was excited to attend. This should go without saying, but reading all the materials and attendance is mandatory as every class should be. He forces you to use your imagination.
At first I thought this class was amazing and funny, but then it got old. Everyday was the same thing. You are expected to read and then talk about what you read. He is very obsessed with himself and his own book shows it. He will call you out and humiliate you if you do something he doesn't approve of (yawn, text, talk, etc.) Overall , he's ok.
Dr. Nericcio is truly a genius. His intellect will make you view literature in ways that you never found imaginable. He requires you to use your imagination and is always open to help you if you are ever confused at any point.
Loved this class, best I have taken in college so far and I am not even a literature major. Strongly recommend this class to anyone who wants to broaden their mind and enjoys using their imagination. It is a creative class filled with great novels and short stories and films. Really suggest this class, take it! you won't be dissappointed!
This class was WONDERFUL! Although it is a little tougher than you would expect, it is well worth the time! The professor is funny and entertaining and it was very enjoyable! Do take this class if you love a fun english class that will help you explore all sorts of aspects in life! And it doesn't require too much outside work!
Professor Nericcio is not your typical college professor, and that is a good thing! He expects you to contribute to the classroom discussions and have done the readings prior to coming to class. He is open minded, witty to say the least, and keeps the class interesting until the very end. Highly recommended, but be willing to do the work.
My favorite class I've yet taken at SDSU. Nericcio is an awesome professor, he cares about the material more than every other professor combined. His passion will motivate you to read and participate in the great discussions after reading a great book each and every class. Be prepared to put in the work, you earn your grade.
He is very passionate and makes class interesting. Doesn't allow laptops and absolutely freaks if he hears/ sees mobile phones
If you have the option of taking this class. TAKE HIM!! He actually cares about teaching, and even though his attendance is mandatory, its totally worth going, he is never boring and the books (needed 13 of them)were great reads! Has a lot of pop quizzes, 2 papers (easy/interesting) and one final. if your paid attention and read you'll do great!
This class honestly got me into reading, there was not a class where I was falling asleep. The material is interesting. Two essays a few random quizzes and the final. Just read and enjoy, you will pass.
You read a lot of books in this class but all of them are interesting and worth reading. Nericcio is really smart and know what he is talking about. The pop quiz are a joke IF YOU READ put it this way if you read the books you will get an A. And make a list of the toolkit words. Overall he makes his class interesting and allows students to think.
He is very passionate about what he teaches and comes prepared to class everyday and his whitty remarks keep the class entertained and helps us pay attention. if you do the reading you will get an A it's not that hard! BEWARE NO TECHNOLOGY ALLOWED IN HIS CLASS. so if you like to pick your nose in class and be on your phone in class don't take him!
By far the best/most interesting literature class I have ever been in. He is a forward thinker and innovative teacher. We read very off the wall books, books you wouldn't expect to read in an intro to Lit. class. Overall an excellent teacher. Simply read the books and you'll do fine.
His personality may rub off as pretentious to some people. In my opinion, he acted as if he was superior in intellectuality as well as mentioning (and repeating) his successes. Go you, but we don't need to be reminded of your brilliance every class. READ THE BOOKS AND ENJOY THEM (as much as possible). You will get an A with enthusiasm and effort!
Nericcio is amazing. One of the best Professors at State. you have a couple pop quizes with questions like "what is your name" and what is the authors name of the book you just read. just to make sure you are in class. 2 writing assignments graded by him or the TA and an easy final if you did the reading. HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING HIM.
You CANNOT GET BEHIND ON THE READING, books are very insteresting, not boring at all(except for hard times). Be on time to class he makes you take the quizzes at the beginning, do all the extra credit!NERICCIO KNOWs what hes doing, hes an awesome proffessor. You will nevee be bored.
A wonderful and delightful class. Quiz's on reading, final exam much like quiz. Do your reading. Lot of reading but worth it. Always in office hours and very helpful in them. Tons of extra credit. Disregard the bad reviews this man is a thoughtful and willing Prof and I look forward to taking him again in the future.
Nericcio is an amazing man, & I would highly recommend taking him. His class will give you an entirely different perspective on life. The themes in his books & work are intriguing. The xtra-cred opportunities are helpful, & fun overall experiences outside of the classroom. He is very accessible & a very unique & AMAZING human being. GRACIAS PROFE!
Don't get intimidated with the amount of books you have to read. All of them are very interesting. You will never get bored in his class if you pay attention. I recommend doing extra credit if he offers the class. They're quite an experience plus it helps you boost your grade. I highly recommend taking his class. You won't regret it.
I went in thinking ill skim the reading and pass, came out having read all 12 books front to back and loving every moment. BEST TEACHER AT SDSU. His passion for the subject is awe-inspiring and incredibly contagious. im not a big reader but i couldnt put down the books he assigned. His class is fun and easy if you have half a brain.
Makes you buy a lot of books and uses a lot of profanity in class which in my opinion lost him some credibility. Some of the subjects he covers are interesting but others not so much. There is a lot of reading in this class and you can't fall behind. The final was really easy and saved my grade.
Took his class this past summer for the study abroad program LONDON ROCKS. Lots of intereting field trips. ( you will see most of LONDON within the first couple weeks you're there because of these required field trips) LOTS OF FUN :) TAKEEEE THISSSS CLASSSS!!
London Rocks Summer Study Abroad. Must go to 12 field trips(cineTreks) out of 20-25 options, put money aside($20+) for each, & write 6 blogs. Experience London in an interactive and fun way. You'll see lots of London & experience a lovely place all at the same time. If you can, go!
Awesome class, even with all the reading. The books he assigns are interesting and essential for discussions and pop quizzes. Slightly arrogant, but the fun of the class outweighs it. Take his class over any other ENGL220 professor.
Professor Nerriccio is one of the best professor's I have encompassed in my college career. He handpicks the best novels and gives you a great insight on Literature. Definitely recommend his class!
I took this class because of the reviews i read on here. honestly thought id learn to love to read, but i just couldn't handle finishing a novel per week since i had 3 other class loads to focus on. that being said, if you're prepared to read, then you'll do perfectly fine. My mistake was not applying myself. But i did enjoy the movie screenings!
At first, he comes off as somewhat narcissistic and arrogant because he claims that he is unlike every other traditional professor at SDSU because he is far better. As the semester continues, you will begin to realize that he may actually just be the best professor you could have ever had in college. Lots of reading, but the knowledge is worth it.
An eye-opening experience. This class has changed the way I read to ensure that I am changed by works of literature. As far as the material and passion Professor Nericcio is an amazing teacher. However, I could not get past all of the distractions and yelling. He made me feel intimidated to be in his presence and treats his students as children.
not hard. had to read like 8 books, all pretty easy. random pop quizzes on the nights reading, thats how he gets you. the hw is easy just try to be deep and thoughtful. nericcio though is pretty pretentiousarrogant. some of his metaphors and philosophizing was too much a majority of the time. the books are interesting tho.
nericcio is pretentiousarrogant. had to read like 8 books, including his own textmex. random pop quizzes and from the readings he assigns. when writing, just try to be deep and ull get good scores on the assignments. his philosophizing is too much though. the books were all interesting except for his, got me into reading actually
Nericcio's class wasn't all that bad. It was actually quite entertaining at times, but his teaching style wasn't for me. There was a lot of reading, so be prepared because there will be pop quizzes. There are some short assignments & essays, in which you have to be thoughtful & think outside the box. Overall, okay, it's mostly personal preference.
Different type of professor but overall great. It's easy to fall behind if you don't do the readings. There are popquizes, two major papers, and a final. He is very open to his students and is available for office hours.
If you're ready for a ride of your life, I highly recommend taking a class with Bill. First of all, yes he is a professor who encourages you to call him by first name. He is also hilariously funny and will break every other assumption you previously held, expanding your mind in new ways. The class isn't easy, and will challenge you, but SO worth it
Debating which eng220 to take? This guy is your answer. You do have to earn your grade, but he makes learningparticipating enjoyable. Getting an A is entirely possible if you go to class and do the reading, and the texts are a pleasure to read. If you're weary of literature, he'll make a believer out of you. Don't miss the opportunity.
What a class! To be honest, I'd been procrastinating ENGL 220 since I started college and I kind of regret that now that I took Bill's class. Easy listening, engaging conversations every lecture. If you really apply yourself by providing insightful, eye-opening analysis of the books you're assigned, you'll do amazing. Take his class for sure!
Take this professor! You'll have a lot to read (c'mon, it's a literature course afterall); HOWEVER, should you do everything he asks to the best of your ability and you follow directions, it's hard to not get an A. Be sure to attend all the classes and take notes. Pay attention, don't text or walk out during lectures, and you'll do great!
I enjoyed the on-line lectures. It was an online class but I wish I had taken the class in person because I enjoyed the lectures so much. Prof Nericcio was so passionate about the subject that it was contagious even through a computer screen.
Out of all the classes at SDSU I have taken so far, this one is the only one that inspired creative thinking instead of crushed it. Nericcio is an eccentric guy who is extremely into his lectures and you learn a lot about how to look at the world in a different light.
It is not a normal English class, in a good way. He likes to incorporate film and music and many other mediums. I really enjoyed it. You should definitely read the books though.
One of the best professors and classes I have had at state. Take this class if you can!! You will learn a ton of new things and read a bunch of cool books/see awesome films. Although there are a lot of books to read, it is completely manageable. Use office hours! Nericcio and your GTA's are there to help. Put in work and you'll get a good result :)
Professor Nericcio is a wonderful professor. He gives amazing lectures, while involving the students. If you show up to class everyday and keep up with the reading, you will pass this class with an A. Two big essays and a final. Visit him in office hours because he is an awesome person to talk to about anything. He offers a lot of extra credit!
You read about a book a week. I actually read every single book and still did bad on the final. He does offer a lot of extra credit that saved everyone who bombed his quizzes. He also doesn't post grades to blackboard. He's really passionate about what he does and tries to make the class unique and different.
Must attend all classes, no sleeping, excellent office hours availability, easy homework assignments, and short books. Professor doesn't necessarily grade your work because he had TA's that were selected for you based on your last name. My TA was extremely lenient when it came to grading.
This was not an easy class, but it was most definitely worth taking. Professor Nericcio was the opposite of a traditional literature teacher and ACTUALLY chose books that were interesting. The only class I've ever had that inspired me to do A LOT of self reflecting, and ultimately challenged me to think outside of the box.
Super passionate teacher! The books you read are relevant and fun, but there's about 6-8 of them. He cares about his students (gives exceptional essay feedback, remembers your name, plans out new themes every semester). You also get a lot of creative freedom with your essays. Gives pop quizzes if he thinks it's necessary. Also, loves his cat.
Professor Nericcio is one of those professors who is highly involved and engaged at all times. Should you need help he is right there waiting for you in his cool chicano lair of awesomeness. Do your work and have fun, and this can be one of the most eye opening/culture engulfing classes you will ever be lucky enough to take!
It was an easy class. Got an A-. Though his lectures are a bit disombobulated- lots of tangents. It t seems like he enjoys hearing his own voice and ignores you in class discussion if he decides he doesn't like you.
Nericcio's books are small and most of them are affordable (get them early in the semester). He offers a ton of extra credit, which literally saved my grade by the end of the semester. In his class we watched independent films and read independent books. He posts his assignments on a separate website. He doesn't tolerate sleeping or electronics.
This was hands down one of my favorite teachers and classes during my five years at SDSU. While the class is challenging and requires you to ACTUALLY do the reading it was well worth it. Nericcio is honest, outspoken and intelligent. He challenges everyone to open their minds and I loved that.
He makes himself pleasant to students, thus if you like entertainment, take this class. It's all about selling his trivial books. If you want content, take another class.
Very easy class where you read his textbook on stereotypes of Mexican-Americans. He teaches how they've been deconstructed by the media, but not how you can deconstruct the media that continuously stereotypes Mexican-Americans. There is nothing redeeming about a group that is constantly beaten up, even in serious classes. Not recommended.
He can make you laugh once in a while, but a graduate course should have more content. The readings he chooses, and his own books are lacking major points in literary theory and analysis. I'd like to read the authentic American classics that have become the models of the English language.
Professor Nericcio is great! His lectures are captivating, entertaining, and hilarious. He brings a new light to older work, making each piece fun and interesting to read and discuss. I would definitely suggest him to friends.
Everyone agrees he is hilarious, but we are not familiar with the classics of English literature. The program is short, and we should have more content than fun, and more papers in standard English.
Not a good teacher at all, DO NOT TAKE
Do not take this course. So unorganized and confusing. Does not use blackboard because he uses his own scattered and confusing platform.
Easily the most interesting class I've ever taken
Do not take this class. It is unorganized, vague, unhelpful, the professor is lazy, and the workload is way too heavy, especially for a GE. It's like Nerricio thinks that this class is the only priority in our lives. After a semester full of constant reading, writing, stressing, and mental breakdowns I'm looking forward to saying peace out Nerricio
Here quick, and straight to the point. Bill is an awesome down to earth guy who is able to convey a deep message or centralized point in each class session(rare). If and only if YOU are able to comprehend it and not be a lazy ass to apply yourself to each lecture and all the book readings--you will be Joog. U will gain an extension of knowledge (;
There is never a dull moment in Nericcio's class. Nericcio challenges his students to go beyond what is clearly presented in the texts that he assigns. Nericcio does assigns unique movies and books and if you do all the work that is required you will enjoy this class. The class is a lot of work but if you do all the work it is worth it.
This class is incredibly interesting and Nericcio is super engaging which makes the class that much better and easy to understand in actual lecture. There is quite the work load, but everything is really exciting and awesome including all the readings, and films, and music that we discuss. Definitely one of my favorite teachers thus far! Loved it!
Awesome professor! While you are required to read A LOT for this class, I loved it. They are all interesting books and he helped me to gain an appreciation for literature. He also does films and artwork, etc. Funny, relatable guy who genuinely cares about his classes and students. Take this class, work hard, and learn something new!
Nericcio as a person is awesome. He's intelligent, interesting, and brutally honest about society, but this class is way too much for a lower-division and/or GE. You read an entire book a week, have random pop quizzes and in-class essays, and get thrown out if you have your phone or laptop out. There's just not enough time to absorb everything.
Bill is really there to help his students succeed in the class. He is super hardworking, and takes the time to help you if you're struggling. Has more office hours than any professor I know. He really cares about making the class worthwhile.
If you can't tell by the 4.3 rating, the negative comments are by students who don't apply themselves then try to take it out on Bill. Well Nericcio RULES. The only teacher that has ever made me feel so inspired and enlightened (And I hate reading!). His class may be more difficult than other GE literature classes, but I promise it's also the best
Professor Nericcio really made my first semester interesting at SDSU. It is evident that he cares a lot about his students and their understanding of the material covered. There is a lot of reading, but it's a college course. That is expected of us. He challenges his students to think beyond what they know and that was something really great.
Professor Nericcio is a really interesting professor and he ensures students go beyond what they already know. It's nice to see how much he cares and he's pretty laid back and funny too. There is a lot of reading, but that is what is expected of a college level course. Definitely would like to take his class again.
He raised students grades to give him a high rating on rate my professor so beware of any unusually high rating on here. Also, For fall 2016 He assigned 1 novel to read per week for the majority of the semester. This means we were supposed to read 200-300 pages per week of usually uninteresting novels, the final was cumulative and covered each book
Don't listen to all the haters! Though there was a lot of reading assigned, most of it had very interesting meaning to it and overall the psychedelic aspect of the class was awesome! I would for sure recommend this class.
Nericcio has an interesting way of approaching the class. You have to read 1 200 page book a week in order to succeed. However, as a teacher he is one of the most caring and interesting at SDSU. He really does just want his students to think for themselves and actually do the material. If you keep up with the reading, it is definitely a great class
Checks attendance, really long lectures that often run off topic, makes the T.A.'s grade most of the papers, does not give good feedback, assigns readings sporadically and in such a way that you may have to read 50 pages a night or not at all, and is difficult to talk to as he answers questions rudely, and sometimes even angrily. Need I say more?
Assigns a ton of reading that is extremely difficult to keep up with, but the information is needed for the final. TAs are extremely tough graders for in-class assignments, but the two essays during the semester weren't too bad. Too much work and interest required for a GE class.
If you are taking 3 or 4 classes and looking for another class, avoid this one. This class is too much work for a GE. The reading gets in the way of more important classes you have so think long and hard before choosing a literature heavy course. Overall not a bad professor, but the workload has dissuaded me from taking future classes with him.
Nericcio is a passionate teacher and he does want everyone to learn but this class was absurd for a GE. If you're not a literature major do not take this because that's what you'll be treated as. He refuses to use blackboard making it extremely difficult to keep up with assignments and grades. The reading is about a book a week. I wouldn't recomend
This class is not easy, but I do recommend it. It takes a lot of work and reading. The books are actually a good read and the quizzes are straight from the books. Nericcio is an excellent professor and its clear how passionate he is about his class. If you actually go to class and put in your best effort, you will be fine.
Nericcio is one of the most engaging and inspirational professors there is. There is a ton of reading and analysis, but the material he chooses are really interesting and fun. Attendance is a huge part of the grade, but his teaching makes me want to come to class every day. He really cares about his students and is really passionate about the class
Nericcio has potential to be a good professor, but his enormous ego and obsession with his own voice gets in his way. He assigns some interesting books, but there definitely is a heavy reading load. It is especially disappointing to read an entire novel for homework, and then attend lecture where he just rambles about himself. Avoid if you can.
Really influential teacher that loves to get his students involved. Made class interesting and assigned attention grabbing materials.
He was great, just be sure to keep up and take notes.
Professor Nericcio was recommended to me by a friend and he certainly did not disappoint. He truly respects his students and treats them as peers rather than students. His course material was provocative and riveting. Buying the tangible books is necessary though and you must have a deep understanding of the readings.
I love that professor Nericcio gave us the freedom to write our essays on whatever we wanted, as long as it related to the course material. This made the papers inspiring and fun to do. Nericcio has great energy and fun assignments!
He offers an array of extra credit assignments for students to do, only one paper and it is a fun paper to write that he does not grade harshly, and you walk away from the class having read a ton of good books that you now own. I recommend!
I really enjoyed his class. The criteria and the themes he presented were very unique. There was a lot of reading involved, but they were enjoyable books that I wouldn't have thought of to read, but I'm glad I did. I would recommend taking him if you have the chance. It was definitely a good and interesting experience. One of my fav Professors!
If you love reading, creative exploration and your not afraid to work hard. Take this class. I throughly enjoyed this class and it was not difficult just more time consuming. He really opens your eyes and mind to a lot of things that surround us within society. But, if you are looking for an easy A GE class, dont take this.
This class is hard. If you want an easy GE do not take it. However, it is super interesting. I found lectures to be really intriguing. The books we read, and yes you HAVE to read them, are difficult but very cool. You will learn a lot though and if you read and always go to class you'll be fine.
Super passionate teacher. If you do the reading and go to class, its pretty easy to get an A. Interesting and energetic lecturer. Lots of reading but short books that are easy reads.
This class was slightly difficult but the prof is always available to help you out whenever. Hes also very funny and I very much loved the content of this class. As long as you do the readings and show up to all the classes you should be fine. Hes very passionate about what he teaches and if you put in the work for the class hell reward you.
Nericcio's class was very challenging but in the best way possible. I never was into reading before his class and he introduced me to so many new authors, directors, and artists! His class was so interesting and near the end he had a couple guest speakers come and talk to us. He'll make you work for your grade but I promise it's 100% worth it!
If you go to class and listen to lectures you will do good. He is a really funny and amazing professor! He really tries his best to make things fun for everyone. You should participate in class and GO SEE HIM IN OFFICE HOURS, it is worth it! He is very caring and encouraging to all students who put in some effort.
Keeps class fun/interesting but very heavy reading load. You get assigned a new book every 2-3 class periods. Wouldn't be as bad if there weren't so many pop quizzes on the reading. Hard to take this class with other hard core classes. I didn't know my grade the whole time cause he doesn't use blackboard. You can raise your grade with extra credit.
Unmanageable list of reading in one semester.
When I first saw the number of books we were going to read, I started to dread the class. However, the readings were fairly easy. You just need to read the pages assigned, show up to class and discuss the readings. He takes attendance and sometimes have pop quizzes, but they're easy. It is an interesting class and make you look at books differently
Hes a maestro of teaching. One of my favorite teachers at SDSU. Will never forget his class. We read Fault in Our Stars and many other amazing novels. He encourages his students to mark the heck out of their books and just be killer readers.
The booklist he had was phenomenal. If youre not into reading, you will be when you take his class. You learn to break down a book and its symbols better than you ever have. Essays are really open to you (prompts are basically non existent), but if youre uncomfortable with that hes easy to approach and willing to help. Cool dude. Great insight.
Very insightful, passionate, and inspiring! Ive learned so much from him and really enjoyed the multiple classes Ive taken with him
Nericcios lectures are entertaining & cover a lot of ground. He really gets students thinking about more than just passing a class rare for undergrads. The overall coursework was challenging, but with easy to follow instructions. He is very willing to offer guidance & advice (provided you have actually read the instructions, syllabus, etc.).
Great teacher. You will have to read a lot in this class and all of his lectures are based on the readings you do. His lectures are pretty interesting because of how genius his ideas are. Hes almost like a Rick cause of how crazy but smart he is. Interesting semster with him, not bad but definitley put some work into it.
This was a harder class than I expected for a 200 level, but one of the most creative and interesting classes I've taken at SDSU. The professor really challenges the norm with his creative themes to the class. Definitely had an impact on me, and would take him again!
This was my favorite class I've taken for a GE at all of state. The professor really cares about his students and is passionate about what he teaches and his lectures show it. Yes, you have to do the assigned reading to do well in the class. It's college. You should expect that. If you read/participate you will succeed. You get out what you put in!
He is a great teacher , with lots of interesting and fun information to pass on to you about "pop" English lit. Very easy going and respects your opinion. Opens a window to whole new world of literati material .
Nericcio has been, in my experience, the most inspirational, fun, and interesting professor that I've ever had. He understands that the high school teachers make reading menial and boring, but his efforts are all to show you, the student, how fun reading actually is. You only have to write a single, painless essay, and as long as you read you pass
Professor Nericcios English 525 class was the first class I took at SDSU upon transferring from a j.c. I was unsure about my major, after the first class session, I was hooked on English. He opened my eyes to a world of art, music, film, and culture I previously was unaware of, and now years later I am proud to call him a friend and mentor.
Bill is hands down one of the best profs in the English department at SDSU. His course offering are engaging and eclectic and the lectures amaze. Dont sleep on this one.: take the class!!!
Dr. Nericcio was one of the best profs at SDSU. He teaches you to challenge yourself and accepted viewpoints, and the materials assigned reflect that. He assigns a lot of reading but as long as you do the work youll do great. One of the few classes that Ive had thats made a permanent positive impact on my life.
Such an inspiring professor. I have already graduated, and still keep in touch with Nericcio. I never ever wanted to miss one of his classes!
Professor Nericcio really makes you think about the works of art you read in his course. He takes you on a journey through the minds of different artists and writers. His class was very enjoyable, although you do have to read the assigned readings to pass his class, just like in any other course- you want an A, you do the work.
SDSU is lucky to have Professor Nericcio. Taking his class freshman year was the best desicion I made throughout my entire college experience. He is very intelligent, passionate, and unafraid of expanding on taboo subjects. I wish I could've taken every class with him. His class is empowering and mind blowing, it will change the way you think.
Great professor, knew the material very well and was hilarious. Passionate on the class and was engaging.
He is amazing. Best class for GE, if you can, take it! He is very approachable and his class is awesome. Material is awesome, not the usual English class but thats what made it, and him, standout. Would have loved to take more of his classes.
Nericcio has by far been the best professor I've had at SDSU. His lectures are far from boring and the material he assigns are actually pretty interesting and not expected from a typical English class. Even though I'm a business major and took this course to fulfill a requirement, it actually inspired me to get back into reading. 10/10 recommended.
He is the best professor! He gets you inspired by the work and motivates you to grow!
Professor Nericcio is actually a good professor ! Hes very passionate about what he teaches and his classes were actually interesting. Only thing is you need to read in order to pass ! If you dont read youll have a hard time trust me ! And show up to class to theres random quizzes on the readings. Most of the books were actually interesting !
Bill is rare. He truly invests in his students. His lectures are dynamic & thoughtful. You will read all the texts he assigns. You will watch cult classic films, discuss music, art & current events. He turns non-English majors into excited, engaged participants. He creates space for collaboration & growth. Transformed my college experience.
One of the best professors hands down. The lectures were amazing and its a different take on literature. If you have the chance, I highly recommend taking Nericcio!
definitely one of the coolest classes Ive taken at state! yes theres a lot to read but they are not difficult. Just follow his directions in prompts and prepare the way he says to and youll be fine!
ENG 220 was an amazing class and one I always looked forward to. It was not your average boring English class it was much more. The books were awesome reads and the discussions were so enlightening that I never wanted to miss class. Def 5 star review of Dr. Nericcio and the class!
Professional Nericcio is one of the reasons for teach. He taught me to question, to teach other to look and understand, to find new ways of seeing, and to construct new ways of knowing. He always answered my questions, clarified my misunderstandings, and asked me to work for my own persective. One of the best professors I have ever had. PERIOD.
Professor Nericcio is one of SDSUs gems. I took English 301 with him and it remains to be one of my favorite course experiences at SDSU. The readings are required for lecture and reading quizzes are given on the material, but the content of the novels and media he selects really is worthwhile. I highly recommend taking his courses.
This class is a safe space where u explore your thoughts and not only memorize and regurgitate info. Prof. Nericcio takes you through this while out of the box experience where no answer or idea is wrong as long as u can defend it with well reasoned interpretation of the body of text in the class. If you can only take 1 lit class this should be it
This course will change your life and perspective of things. Highly recommend you take it. Only downside is you have to make time to read all course materials, but its worth it. Challenging but fun!
Very entertaining and passionate professor who will teach you a lot of things while making it fun and worthwhile.
I couldn't praise this professor more. It's been my purpose to take every class I possibly could with Nerricio. His comp lit classes teach crucial critical thinking skills, gave me the confidence andtools to articulate my thoughts. Huge on pushing students to think for themselves. Subject matter always relevant. Eternally grateful for all I learned.
Bills a great guy and a great teacher. I had him for English 220 and it was a fairly difficult class and you may have to open a book or two. But he's a really good and caring teacher. He makes lectures interesting and from someone who used to hate English he really made me enjoy reading and the subject.
Professor Nericcio is why you go to college: He forces you outside your comfort zone and INSPIRES you to tap into your latent abilities. He carefully curates the readings for pieces that reflect the selected theme (which is always avant garde and interesting). Also, hes compassionate and genuinely invested in your learning. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS
Great professor!
If Post Malone taught English, he would be like this professor. Nericcio is smart, gritty, and legit. His lectures are easy to follow and insightful. Be warned, you will laugh, cry, and learn. If you have questions, visit him at his office hours. He listens and cares.
He was amazing, all around. Lecture was actually really fun, I always looked forward going to class. Needed this class as part of my GE's and I'm glad I went with this one!
One of the ways I rate professors is if the gems of wisdom they impart last, long after the class is over. I got several of those from Bill. He is supportive and cares about his students. Some students may complain about his strictness about not using screens or not talking/socializing with each other in class but I really appreciate that!
I really liked Bill's class. I took him last year and learned alot. Our theme was Psychedelic mirrors so it was a really interesting way to have an English class. It made it so it wasn't boring and a lot of the books we were required to read were actually enjoyable. The no phone and laptop rule is actually great because you learn a lot more.
Nericcio has been by far one of my most memorable experiences while at the university. Though his class was a large lecture course, he has designed his course lectures to keep me on my toes, learning icipating actively. You are required to read the texts he assigns, but his examsiting prompts are very flexible so keep an eye out for themes
Dr. Nericcio is an awesome professor. You have to work hard but it pays off. All of the books assigned were awesome and I like how we watched movies and episodes to supplement the topics we were studying.
He was a great guy and the subject really opened my mind to artistic the world really is! I learned a lot but an issue a lot of students had in my class was how bias he was. He never accepted alternative opinions and did not like students who were smarter than him. There is one paper but you can easily get an A if you actually do the readings
Professor Nericcio is amazing! There are a lot of readings in his class but they are all very interesting and I actually enjoyed all of them. He also opened my mind in my thinking and I really appreciate his lectures.
Bill is one of the best teachers at SDSU. He's an insightful professor, fun lecturer, and I think he studied with the great Carlos Fuentes. Analyzing Confederacy of Dunces with Bill was better than my mom reading it to me when I was child, lol. WARNING: class requires brain use, you'll get lost in his office, and don't get him started on Bill Hicks
Professor Nericcio is a passionate professor who is very informal and a great teacher. I learned a lot from him. He gives pop-up quizzes but as long as you have done the readings you'll do well. Professor Nericcio cares about his students like no other professor I've had.
This guy acts like his class is the only class that you're taking. Too heavy of a load for a GE. He also is a little too smart for his own good. He looks down on people that don't match his language level, etc. When you participate in class you can immediately tell if he's not interested b/c he just starts pacing around and stops paying attention.
Have to read around 100 pages for each class (some books extremely verbose and difficult to understand), pop quizzes, if you miss more than 3 classes you are automatically brought down half a letter grade, don't even think about touching a phone or laptop in class, this man is low-key insane. If you are looking for an EASY ge pls don't take him
For a GE class it 's super difficult. Be prepared to read around 12 books and do not even think about skipping class because if you miss 3 then you lose 5% at the end of the term. The lecture is super heavy and he sometimes goes on tangents. It's pretty stressful because he gives pop quizzes and you have to know the author's names. DO EXTRA CREDIT!
If you want a passionate professor that actually cares about your work, Nericcio is the one. His class is hard, but ultimately you come out a better student. There are 12 required books, some easy some hard. If you want to pass you have to go to class and you have to read the books. Ask questions he loves students who are curious!
Professor Nericcio is an amazing lecturer and professor. He is passionate about literature and about elevating learning to a higher level. The amount of reading is significant, but that should not have been a surprise for a literature class. Attendance is absolutely mandatory and missing class drops your grade significantly. Overall a great class!
Do not take this course with him if you want an easy GE. He required a lot of books, and gave pop quizzes if he believed we didnt read the book. He made his own book a required reading. Majority of the class didnt understand it, and the TAs were supposed to do a lecture on it, but they didnt understand it either. Study/work hard if you want an A
One of the hardest GEs. He makes you read one book a week every week for the entire semester. The class is very confusing in terms of grading since he doesn't use blackboard.
I worked really hard in this class and it paid off but it was way too much work for a GE. If you miss 3 classes, you're grade drops a letter so go! Do all the extra credits offered and it will save your grade! The lectures and readings are pretty out there so if you're not really into lit be mentally prepared and if you are then you'll love it.
This is a unique English class. The professor is passionate and engaging. You will learn through music, reading, analyzing art, and attending plays.
He is a passionate, respectable, exciting professor who cares about every one of his students, whether youre in a 15 or 300-person class. The book list is full of fun & thought-provoking narratives. You wont ever be bored in lecture or at home. He encourages you to make the class what you want it to be and find your own voice. I highly recommend!
Prof Nericcio is one of a kind. Hes a bit out there, but he really understands the human condition. Taking his intro to literature class is essentially like entering into a very large book club. Youre required to read the books and he goes through them quickly. He has pop quizzes on readings. But definitely worthwhile, you'll be more empathetic.
Just take the freaking class. Hes great and out of the box, you wont be bored with this humanity class
If you can keep up with minor readings, and weekly writing assignments you can succeed in this class. This class was taken abroad in London over four weeks, but I bet his English 220 class (which is a full semester) would also be just as engaging and fun.
I hate reading but he made the class my favorite class of the semester. This is also the first review I've given bc he was awesome and it needs to be known!! Very interactive with students and he really cares like other profs dont.
He is the best. Go to class and go to his office hours and you will do great in his class.
Blunt but honest review: Nericcio is entertaining as a professor, keeps you engaged. Has issues with being on time, like my dude, my previous class is across campus & sometimes i cant power walk in 5-10 mins from PG to GMCS. Good English professor, lots of reading. Would take him to fulfill requirement only. Mentions his Cornell degree quite a bit
At this point in my life, I am able to look back at the people/events that have made an real impact. The first professor I ever had the privilege of taking a class with was Dr. Nericcio. My career path did not lead where I imagined it would in my early 20s, the experiences I had in MANY classes with him prepared me for real life. A true mentor.
Most memorable professor I have ever had. Only professor that I have visited after graduation. Great to sit down for a chat a couple of years later. His classes were inspiring and really gave me the power to use critical thinking and psychology in every day life. If you take the course seriously you will receive way more than just a grade!
I loved Professor Nericcios classes so much. He is brilliant. Always lively discussions. Opened my eyes so some amazing literature I would not have otherwise discovered. A life-changing class.
Dr Nericcio was the most impactful teacher of my grad school experience at SDSU. He is a brilliant teacher, writer, and mentor, and he inspired me to try to be the best version of all of those roles as well. He will share his time, energy, and vast knowledge freely and wants you to succeed in his class and life. I highly recommend his class!
Ive taken a graduate-level class with Dr. Nericcio and participated in his undergrad literature class too, and both were fun and thought-provoking. I enjoyed them. And he isnt a tough grader; hes very caring and gives detailed Feedback for each one in class. His selections of books are amazing too.
He requires LOTS of books & covers one per week. Loves to give random quizzes for attendance. If you don't read you will not pass the quizzes. Overall lectures are lackluster unless you LOVE reading. He's also super annoying about phones & will interrupt multiple times during one class period to tell you to put them away...
It's a literature class so you will have to read about a book per week. However, professor Nericcio assigns the most complex, mind-blowing, fascinating books I promise they won't be a drag to read. Surprise quizzes every once in a while but he offers a lot of extra credit opportunities! Awesome person and professor.
I do forensics and missed 1 of his classes he helped get points back. SHOW UP TO CLASS it won't kill you I appreciated how he really tries to keep class upbeat! Responds quickly to emails, several extra credit opportunities, avoid using "interesting" in papers/assignments, BUT TAKE ANY CLASS W/ BILL! Was the most organized prof. I've had at SDSU :)
Dr. Nericcio's lectures are incredibly captivating and hilarious, however, this class is NOT an easy A. It's a lot of work, a lot of reading (at least a book per week), and there are pop quizzes to check if you did the reading and for attendance.
This is a class that you have to engage with and do the work for but it is so captivating and engaging that you want to do the work. Assume reading about 1 small book per week and having the most kickass lectures I have ever seen. Nericcio is very accessible and nice but also is a hard grader, if you put in effort you will be fine. If not then rip
this professor is good for a person who doesn't like reading, because all the readings for the class are pretty easy, and you just have to show up for class. He always talks about what was read anyways. He's super animated, and gives a lot of specific questions in class quizzes. also don't show up late because he calls you out.
a lot of reading but I stopped reading the books halfway through the semester and still got a B+. Super entertaining and engaging lectures with several awesome guest speakers. The class is really interesting as far as english classes go. Stay caught up and you'll do well.
Nericcio is a great professor. His lectures are very engaging and he encourages students to attend office hours. That being said, this class requires A LOT of reading and assigns regular pop quizzes. Some of the books are very short but expect a lot of homework toward the beginning of the semester. Attendance is mandatory.
Really funny and caring. A lot of reading! You will be lost during lectures and unable to do the in class "pop quizzes" that he grades if you don't do the assigned readings. I hardly ever read and still passed because he offers a ton of extra credit to make up for lost points. Not an easy A but a great class if you actually want to learn!
Bill is super chill and awesome! I really dig his ideas and lectures because he really owns the room and is so confident in his analysis of certain texts. I took the very first section of Comics and History, and I think he knocked it out of the park. Just be prepared to read a ton and have deep ideas about what you read. Grades kind of harsh.
This class changes your perspective of the medium world. I can not watch movies or see ads with the same "eye" anymore. Great GE and critical thinking developer. Lots of the readings have big images - so it will not be a problem if you don't like reading too much. I am not a native speaker and I am doing pretty decent in this class.
ENG-157 is an interesting fun class with good amount of reading, so you have to make sure to keep up with the material in the event of pop quizzes. Professor Nericcio is an energetic and charismatic instructor keeping the class fun and thought provoking.I'd recommend anyone to take this class as long as you do the reading you will get a good grade.
I have many grievances for this class. It was way too much work for what it was. Nericcio tries to have class discussions, but then shoots down other students' opinions if you don't agree with him. The amount of writing is insane, and toughly graded. Don't be fooled by the class' title. You will be disappointed. DO NOT TAKE FOR AN EASY ELECTIVE!
He makes you do a lot of reading which is fine since it's all comics. Watch out for pop quizzes that happen in the first few minutes of class. He probably smokes bud while prepping his lectures. He wants really abstract thoughts in the papers, hardly gives you enough time to write answers. Easy C but nearly impossible to get an A.
I am truly going to miss my Tuesdays/Thursdays at 11am with Professor Nericcio. Heres the thing, students complain about him being difficult but cmon guys this is college! Its simple, do the work (but dont submit bs, give it your all) and read everything. Stay on schedule, youll do fine on the pop quizzes and the final exam. Do it, take him!
Professor Nericcio is very charismatic and his lectures are extremely thought- provoking. I really enjoyed the books we read throughout the semester and the open discussions after the reading. He showed us how to "see" the hidden messages. I will use what I learned in his class for the rest of my life. Take him! You won't regret it!
I took for him for Eng-157 (the comics class, which fyi not all the books are comics). The class is very fast paced and expensive to buy all books. He does frequent pop quizzes. He doesn't post grades until after semester ends. He is a tough grader looking for creative thoughts. If you want a decent grade, do ALL the reading and show up to class.
Profesor Nericcio is a one of a kind profesor, he is funny, energetic, passionate, and much more, 10/10 would take his class again.
Nericcio is very invested in literature which is fascinating. His class is very interesting and I think he is a nice and funny guy. Only downside to this class is that grades are not posted all semester, you have a rough idea of what you have but it isn't clear, and you have to read every book and read for every class or you will do poorly.
Professor Nericcio is something else. You may see other reviews claiming that it is too hard to take, while it is difficult those students are the students who do not take the time to do the assignments. For the rest of your life your mind will not have the opportunity to expand to the lengths that this class allows. Long live psych mirrors baby!
He's a very good professor, his lectures are very well written. You have to buy the physical books for this class. If you don't go to class then you will miss a lot of information. There are pop quizzes every few weeks. The reading is mandatory, if you don't read then you won't pass.
He's really a great person, super willing to explain grades/help you out if you need. The class itself is interesting but difficult for a 100 lvl. I had to rent 11 books and YOU MUST read them bc on the one day you don't, there will be a pop quiz. He also grades somewhat hard because he expects creativity so if comics isn't your thing DONT TAKE IT!
The professor does not want to see you fail. This does not mean that it's an easy A though. You're expected to put in effort but the lectures are fun, even if you're not really into literature all that much. There's quizzes that are more meant to help you pass rather than to make you stressed. Overall a very fun class, would highly recommend.
I was pleasantly surprised at how enthusiastic and down-to-earth he was. Lectures are really fun, including witty jokes and the time for students to contribute. If you like actual art, writing, and critical thinking, take his class! Occasional pop quizzes, usually include writing a small paragraph (if you've read the book you're fine)
You will buy lots of books for this class. The exams are somewhat easy but don't be too confident, make sure to take notes during his lectures. He is super chill and we can see he loves to teach.
You will buy and have to read ALL the books mentioned in the syllabus. But it's really not a big deal we are in college after all. Also, the books are pretty interesting so as long as you read all the books and pay attention to his lectures which can be pretty easy you should be fine.
Nericcio convinced me to become an English major. His class was challenging, but the lectures are riveting and interactive. Invest in the books, and read them; they are all outside-the-box and fun. He does take attendance and give the occasional pop quiz. Test formats are straightforward. This is a class for readers/writers/art+comics consumers.
Nericcio will inspire you. You definitely must read all assigned books, but they're super cool and 90% are graphic novels. Lectures are genuinely intruiging, but do the assigned work BY THE START of class or you might miss out on some points. Overall loved this class and Nericcio is one of my favorite profs. He makes you want to learn!
Does not allow electronic devices. For what ever reason you go throughout all your other classes and can use laptops to take notes but when you get here he believes he is so special he has a need to ban it, hindering the learning of students. His grading is done outside the normal canvas and is not updated. Easy class bad teaching methods.
Just make sure to do the reading and participate in class and you'll be fine. The professor is hilarious and has a strong presence which is good because he makes it difficult for you to not be engaged.
Nericcio is passionate about what he teaches. There is A LOT of reading, more than I read throughout high school. If you read, you will pass. I would personally not take it again because I am not a reader, but I know many people enjoyed his class.
He was my favorite professor this year! It is a lot of reading, but if you do the readings then the class will become a lot easier for you. I would for sure take this class again because this was the only one that didn't put me to sleep and kept me entertained the whole time.
If you love literature,art,comics...TAKE HIM! He is amazing and so knowledgable. Get ready to work in his class, but if you enjoy the subjects he teaches you will pass. So kind and is very communcative with his students, hilarious and never bored in his lectures. Takes attendance every class and has pop quizzes on occasion.
Take notes and read the books! The professor is also caring and wants you to succeed; coming to his office hours helped me realize my full potential in becoming a greater thinker than prior the class. A tip that I have learned in the class-- use post it notes for the books to gauge personal input and notebook for key terms. Good luck!
This teacher is so cool. You would be missing out on "the college experience" if you don't take this class. This class taught me so many things outside of the readings. It actually feels like a college course. He is passionate about what he teaches. Lots of reading but its worth it. Favorite class at SDSU so far. take this class!
Teaching style for this class is lecture-based, and the readings are done prior to the class that you discuss them. I read 11 books this semester, and at times it was a lot to handle. He gives pop quizzes at random times, and they are worth a surprisingly large amount of your grade. Attendance is mandatory...don't miss class.
I enjoy Nericcio's personality and his well thought, intriguing takes on the books we read. Some of my friends found this class to be difficult, but as long as you read and somewhat listen in class it is super easy!
I really loved this professor, his lectures were sometimes bizarre but always engaging. Be prepared to read A LOT, I think almost like a book a week. This class really tones down around finals which is so nice. The class isn't hard if you actually read and take notes. If you don't it's hard because his tests are very content based.
If you are interested in literature, psychoanalysis, or are hoping to do some soul searching and self-improvement, then this class is an essential! I'm an English major and absolutely found my passion in this class. There is no written homework, all of the work done outside of class is reading, but it is a lot of it! PLEASE TAKE THIS CLASS!
This class ended up being my favorite one of the semester! A bit more work than other 100-level classes, but absolutely worth it. You'll want to stay on top of reading (outside of class!) and pay attention to Prof. Nericcio's lectures---which were always engaging and so helpful in further understanding the material. You should take this class!
I enjoy his enthusiasm and passion for his class. He can be quite overwhelming and even scary if you are taking his class as the first year. The reading isn't bad it's just pictures. Look ok at his wacky website, it's the class syllabus. Some lectures were great! Others weren't. Aside from that, it was an okay easy A kind of class.
Generally fine. He's passionate and the lectures are organized. If you read, and go to class, you'll pass. Downsides: he's particular, and has a belittling streak. He talked down to the class after poor performance, doesn't care if/why you don't like the books, and calls out people that break his rules. That said, he does care about the students.
Nericcio is a great professor and makes it clear he loves his job. Pretty expensive class. Had to borrow about 9 books. Be prepared to read carefully because you never know if he'll assign a surprise quiz. As long as you read and show up to lectures you should be fine. He wants you to pass. (just wish he rounded my B+ to an A- :,) )
the material is fairly easy tbh just go to class there are pop quizzes but sometimes he gives a warning if you go to class youll probably get at least a B+ on everything it was just really easy
classes R always worth attending.he gives lifelong knowledge. LOVES what he does as a professor/lifelong learner mentality. THOROUGH GRADER, ask questions, go to office HRS & chat abt your paper. tips for life. taught me how to be a great writer frm this class. fun and cool guy. cares more abt u gettin an education that u do probably.books r a must
Prof Nericcio has a big personality with very hectic lectures. Goes on long tangents that seemingly have nothing to do with the material, but will still find a way to test you on it. A good amount of the grade is based on pop quizzes that are just the authors of the primary texts or obscure pieces we discussed for 30 minutes 5 weeks prior.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you are a freshman simply looking for an arts credit. This class is not worth the amount of reading and writing just for the GE completion. This class is heavily centered around reading and philosophy and literature. Never been more confused.
Good professor, he cares a lot and has an enjoyable personality. However, I would not recommend this class to anyone who has trouble attending class, it will be impossible for you to pass the class. If that is not an issue for you, I would recommend the class. He gives lifelong lessons and his lectures are never boring.
Professor Nericcio is an amazing professor! Attendance is mandatory and there are many pop quizzes. If you read the books the class will be a breeze for you. My only critique is that the quizzes/homeworks are graded heavily so make sure to put your best analysis on there!
He is very passionate, but the amount of memorization of names of each work that is shown as little as one time in class is insane. TA's can be hit or miss, sometimes you barely put any effort and you get a good score, other times you try extremely hard on something and get a terrible score. There are few assignments and short pop quizzes.
He's really passionate about what he teaches, but he goes off topic and yaps a lot. The TA's helped me more than the professor himself and he made everything much more difficult than it should be. The pop quizzes were annoying and the books were very much hit or miss. You can definitely find a much better course to fulfill your art GE.
This class is super fun and was really cool in changing how I look at art and comics. It's not super easy and there are often pop quizes, but it's pretty easy to guess when they are. Compared to anything in stem, this class is super easy and fun, just do the readings and remember author names
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE JUST TRYING TO TAKE AN ART. I literally hate this class with a passion. The teacher is rude to those who don't actually want to fulfill a degree in art and he basically calls his students not ready for university if you aren't thriving in this class. He thinks this class is ur whole life and its all that matters.
I honestly really enjoyed the class, Nericcio is very interactive, you''ll be reading a lot, about a book a week, but honestly they aren't very hard reads and some the books are actually very enjoyable,as long as you go to class and read the books, you'll do fine, and the quizzes/assignments and the midterm and final can be kind of fun if you do so
Although this class was tough a few times throughout the year, I was able to do numerous extra credit assignments and get my grade up. If you are looking for a blow off class this is not it, but if you are looking for an educational opportunity worth your money about this topic, this is it.
This is man is not a npc. He is such an original character and I like that about him. However, he is a tough grader and unconventional professor, but thats because he wants you to learn. This class is not for everyone, if you're looking for fun superhero comics this is not the place. This is a deep class about deep issues in comics.
If you're looking for an easy GE class to take to receive credits, this is not the class for you. Professor is funny and cares about students. He's also mastered the way of making the class where if you don't show up/ do all the readings, it will be a big uphill battle to pass. Take heavy advantage of extra credit opportunities, theres plenty.
In the captivating realm of graphic novel literature, Professor Nericcio illuminates the intricate fusion of visual artistry & narrative brilliance. He transforms the classroom into a dynamic crucible of creativity & intellectual exploration enriching the literary landscape and connecting the symbiotic relationship between words & images. ITB3
If you attend all the lectures, the tests should be relatively easy to pass as his lectures cover the ideas that are needed. However, he is very egotistical and sometimes belittling to those who are religious. So if you can get through his extended rants, he is a good professor who is passionate about the subject and students' education
Professor Nericcio is a very interesting professor and I recommend him because unlike any other! However, you cannot breeze through his class, there is a lot of reading to do but it is manageable. He heavily curves your final grade if you meet with him and have attended class regularly. Overall, very interesting and thought-provoking professor.
If you're looking to take this class to satisfy your GE arts credit, look elsewhere. This class was simply a waste of my time. It's not necessarily hard, but he assigns confusing books and spends lectures talking about himself rather than explaining the material. Doesn't use canvas or post grades, emails super last minute changes to assignments.
Lots of lectures but he makes them enjoyable and has a fun personality. Pokes fun at a lot of topics and is clearly passionate at his work. I'd give this class a 2 but you have to know authors/ illustrators and book titles. I'm sure you're reading this professor but honestly I never fully read a book, good class if you like to read.
Professor Nericcio was an interesting character. He was funny during certain lectures but in a nasty mood for others making the 1hr15m feel like 3h. The topics discussed in the class get really complex which nobody expected. Doesn't post grades until the last day of the whole semester. Not terrible but certainly a very hard course. Passionate dude.
He's a good professor and you can tell he cares for his students, but he goes off on tangents. And the in class quizzes are easy only if you've read the books. If you read the books and know the authors then you'll pass easily. He rounded my B+ to an A. Good professor. Sometimes it seems like he's high though..
If you are looking to take this for art credit, don't. Do something else. I didn't think one could make a course about comics books stressful. Grade is mostly determined by quizzes, midterm, and final. They were all pop quizzes so the whole class struggled. No announcement on what the quizzes were on. Books were really weird and hard to decipher.
The best prof I have ever had. Took his class 2 sems ago and still wish I had lectures as good as his again. Class is really interesting. It can be a little odd sometimes, but he really gets you thinking in ways you've never thought before. Caring towards his students and loves to joke. Was always positive and created a comfortable environment.
Professor Nericcio is a treasure you'll want to stumble upon some time in your 4 years. Lots of reading to get you thinking about the real world and your own life. He talks about his own life too and it's interesting, don't you want to know? Three years at SDSU and this is still my favorite class yet, take it and you won't regret it!!!
I liked Nericcio and his class was interesting. The books were mostly boring but easy to read. There were pop quizzes but they were not bad.. The midterm and final was also pretty easy just read the books and KNOW THE AUTHORS AND ILLUSTRATORS OF BOOKS!!!! He was funny we watched cool and fun things like the movie Flirt.
The books he assigns are literally comic books, you just have to take time out of your day to do the readings. The test/quiz questions are super easy. Don't miss any classes as he takes attendance which will play a huge role in your final grade and he also assigns easy pop quizzes. Only negative is that he doesn't use canvas regularly.
Prof. Nericcio was very passionate about this class, which made it somewhat engaging, but overall, this was my least favorite class. Don't get me wrong, I loved the comics we read, but overall, the class was extremely boring, and I dreaded going. Also, it was a 330 lecture class but attendance was mandatory.
My FAVORITE TEACHER EVER, he is a treasure and the book choices for the semester are still some of my favorite reads ever, pleassseeee take this class and READ THE BOOKS it seriously changed my life and was such a fun way to keep me activated and interested in going to class. LOVE U NERICCIO
Professor Nericcio is a passionate and engaging instructor, though his class can be a bit hit-or-miss. The readings are interesting but challenging, and you'll need to know the material well for the frequent pop quizzes. Unstuckstudy AI was a lifesaver for me when prepping for exams.
He is passionate about the class but there are lots of books you HAVE to read because he will give pop quizzes. To succeed in this class, you must be good at memorization and literature analysis. He is funny but overall a pretty weird guy. This class focuses on robots and sex so be prepared and aware that he will talk about uncomfortable subjects.
Overall, I just took this class for art credit, and it wasn't too bad. Some of the books are actually good reads and many of them aren't that long. Reading is the only homework really assigned. Some books were a drag. The guy was just really strange to me. The only forms of quizzes are pop quizzes but just read and know the authors names.
This is such a strange class. They grade difficult and due to not having any real assignment you grade is based solely on pop quizzes other than the midterm and final. He also is weirdly old school, he doesn't use canvas which makes grades and information virtually nonexistent.
I would not take this class again. If you miss a pop quiz your grade will be screwed. There are no "real" assignments just readings. He speaks about things that are not appropriate for school at any level of education. I attended every lecture and was still fighting for my grade at the end.
William Nericcio is 100% a tenured professor. Do not take this class if you were expecting an actual “comics and history” class. This class is based heavily on sexuality, AI, and other unhinged topics. That being said it is a relatively easy class to get an A. Do the readings, know the AUTHORS AND ILLUSTRATORS, pay attention to lectures. lightwork
Professor that actually cares for our education.
Odd class, not really comics and history. Bunch of books to read that aren't too bad & 2 in class movies. mandatory attendance + pop quizzes, which are the only "assignments". Doesn't talk about things "inappropriate for school." I guess it was kinda easy but there's better GE's out there. Also likes to spotlight anyone who leaves during lecture.
His class content was just pretty easy and all the pop quizzes were just like who/drew wrote what. His grading is super strict though and if you miss a quiz or bomb one, it tanks your grade. The class theming too felt a little inappropriate at times that was the whole point of the class.
Probably the weirdest professor I ever had and ever will have .. after failing 2 pop quizzes I absolutely had no faith in my grade. I'm surprised he gave me a D- from never . Also don't leave lectures he's like oh no no no you're not leaving my lecture, don't even think about it GIRL
PLEASE READ THE BOOKS HE ASSIGNS. Heavily reliant on pop quizzes. He refuses to use Canvas so we don't know our grades until the semester is over. He's entertaining but sometimes the things he says is weird. Makes us bring physical books to class which is extremely annoying.
Attendance was mandatory even for a large lecture and shames you for using the bathroom or leaving the room. thinks that he is the most important class even though its a GE. Gives pop quizzes that you have to know the author and illustrator of the books for + spelling counts. Class is easy if you study the titles and authors but too much for a GE.
Grades were composed of only pop quiz's and tests. so there was no homework save reading that can be easily skimmed or summarized. a big component of the tests are just memorizing the names of the authors and illustrators. he checks for attendance even in large lectures and don't come late/leave early/sleep in lectures, he'll get pissed.
grade relies solely on pop quizzes and midterm/final. for quizzes, make sure to read and memorize the authors and illustrators. said a lot of weird and sexual things about women and cooks you if you try to leave the lecture or use the restroom + lecture attendance is mandatory. honestly not too bad if you have a friend in the class.
For an art GE I would take a different class. I thought "comics and history" would've lived up to its name, but the course requires reading 9 different books (pretty short and easy) and pop quizzes, with mandatory attendance. Not hard if you try a bit but if you want something easier for art I would take a different course.
Best prof ever! Is very knowledgeable about what he is teaching, genuinley cares about his students and the material. One of my favorite classes at SDSU.
If you're taking this just for your art GE, I wouldn't recommend this class. The grade is basically just pop quizzes and 2 exams, so attendance is mandatory. Some books are also novels with no pictures which I didn't expect. However, Nericcio is definitely a professor who is very passionate about what he teaches and can be entertaining.
Bill Nericcio is an excellent professor. This is my second time taking a class of his. Bill is a professor who actually cares about his students as individual and educational beings instead of just bored kids to be talked at. The classes are reading heavy but the readings are EXCELLENT. Every English major (or not!) should take a Nericcio class.
Nericcio is an extremely passionate lecturer. Although his class may appear intimidating, the coursework is manageable and reasonable. Nericcio is reasonable and approachable-- should any issues arise make sure to talk to him during office hours; his office is always open. I would definitely take another course with him! He is an SDSU gem.
He is so passionate about teaching and literature! That's what I really like about his class. He has so much knowledge to share and most of the readings are awesome!
Nericcio is an amazing professor! I was hesitant at first thinking he was going to be tough and a harsh grader, but it is all tough love. He wants all his students to succeed and is extremely knowledge and passionate about what he does. If you do the reading, you'll be fine! He cares if you care!
If you are serious about your education and want your moneys worth take professor Nericcio. If you are not serious or don't care about the literary arts skip. He demands a lot of you but you get the same back. It felt like I was getting graduate level lectures. He's very accessible. He genuinely wants you to succeed you just need to want it too.
Prof Nericcio was the best professor I have ever had at San Diego State BY FAR. Nericcio is an incredible and inspirational lecturer, he knows his stuff and he doesn't talk around important issues. This class reinvigorated my love for writing and literature, and has truly inspired me. I will never shut up abt this class PLS take him if you can.
Bill Nericcio is a professor for the students who hate college and love learning. Leave inhibitions and preconceptions of what a "lecture" should be at the door, and put on your "I Love Lit" caps, as he will take you through the hallways of his mind-palace, and the many bookshelves that adorn it. Too poetic? Read the books, ask questions, & enjoy!
the best class ive taken of all time. very good teacher about life in general, lectures were always very interesting personally if you read the material and connected. good amt of reading, pop quizzes/tests were above-average difficult, but not hard/tricky.
You definitely should show up to class, as he gives pop quizzes that are worth a lot of your grade (they are basically tests). He is super passionate and definitely curses a lot. The class does involve him talking about some sensitive topics, like drugs (sometimes pro-drugs), so if you're religious I probably wouldn't take this class.
I love this class! The lectures are amazing, and the content is very interesting. The class is easy if you attend and read the material. The "pop quizzes" are fairly easy to predict, and as long as you read and pay attention, you will pass. He is very clear on his personality and expectations early on, so take the first impression to heart.
He is very passionate about the subject, however... lots of time has to go into this class even though it is just a GE. More of an English class than comics. Pop quiz almost every other class, does not post your grades anywhere , and make sure you have day1ready because you have to buy at least 1 book a week. If your just taking for a GE, don't.
He's super passionate about what he's teaching, but this class is defintently more literature based over comics imo, I didn't know what I was getting myself into. He assigns lots readings and there are in class quizzes and sometimes pop quizzes, it's not too difficult overall, manageable for sure. If you like literature you'll love the guy.
DO NOT take this class if you're just trying to fulfill GE's. WAY too much reading for a GE class and the class feels so random, he yaps about random things each class. He doesn't use Canvas, so you don't know your grade. He's kinda rude but can be funny at times. He's very energetic to say the least. Horrible experience, would not recommend.
I was honestly shocked to see any 1.0 reviews. I took this class last semester and genuinely haven't stopped thinking about it since. If you like to think outside of the box and read interesting books this is definitely the class for you. His lectures were entertaining! Just come to class and give the readings a chance and you'll be just fine!
this is a rlly freaky class. if u aren't into weird sex comics then stay away. u have to be super interested in his topics to want to show up. his pop quizzes are so annoying, attendance matters a lot, he makes u sign in. there is a lot of explicit topics and imagines in this class. he also pushes a political agenda and makes uncomfortable jokes.
If your religious or sensitive to drugs and sex, don't take this class. Show up and read his books and you'll be fine, it felt like an english class overall, not your traditional comics btw. He's passionate about his class and will call you out on phones and leaving class. Overall, he's pretty cool and energetic, a little freaky though.
This class is extremely interesting and Nericcio is one of the smartest and most engaging people. If you are not open to deep thinking and growth then this is not the class for you. It is not a "easy A" comic class and does require effort. But if you are willing to listen, Nericcio is very interesting and a great teacher.
hes a really quirky and intelligent professor and has a lot to offer. this class was really interesting to me and honestly an easy class. he will call u out for leaving the lecture room to pee which is lowk crazy. he also had lots of pop quizzes he wouldn't warn you abt and if you dont show up to class ur screwed. ur grade wont be seen in canvas
If you are taking this class for a GE DONT. Attendance is super mandatory and there are pop quizzes every other week. A lot of reading, new book every week (some are interesting others are horrible). His grading system is ridiculous and if you don't write to his creative standard prepare to get bad grades. You also cannot view your grade anywhere.
Love it, inspirational, informative, engaging class on art and literature. I now have a better vocabulary and deeper understanding of Sex, Drugs, Rock and Comics and how they can be used to inform and how it can be used as therapy. His demand for drawing attention to comics, graphic memoirs and graphic medicine in a scholarly light is contagious.
He does self-aggrandize quite a bit but is extremely passionate about the subject. The class is extremely interesting and is not for those who aren't thoroughly interested. Very dedicated and it shows in his teaching, but that does mean he is a hard grader. Grading criteria is hard to figure out.
He is SUCH a great professor; the other reviews saying ECL 157 was a hard or "weird" class obviously didn't want to take a college-level course. Yes, you have to read the books; yes, you have to analyze them. It's an arts and literature class?? This class gave me lots of room to think and correctly evaluate content. Easy A if you just try to care!
Nericcio is insanely intelligent and gives his all in these lectures. He does do lots of pop quizzes, but if you actually read and retain the assigned books, you're fine. He offers TONS of extra credit if you do happen to miss a quiz. He cares a lot about his students and this class overall. He is SO smart and this class was extremely manageable!
Can feel as if he is pushing his own agenda and lecturing about his own discoveries, thoughts, etc on the books and if you don't have the same mind as him it can seem your answer's aren't satisfactory enough. Mandatory attendance, doesn't use canvas, overall grade is your midterm, final, and avg score of pop quizzes take throughout the semester.
Terrible professor. Calls his course comics and history but its actually an english art analysis course. Half the assigned books aren't even comics and are just actual novels. In class teaching does not pertain to constant pop quizzes and he expects you to remember the most unimportant panels or paragraphs from each book. would not recommend.
Great Prof. lectures were genuinely entertaining. Its one of those classes you are exited to go to bc learning doesn't feel burdensome. Lectures are super entertaining+tv shows! Sure there are a handful of books, but lets be honest how hard/time consuming is it to read a comic? Prof wants everyone to do well and makes it easy to excel in his course
Honestly a great dude, a lot of reading but they are fun books. Crazy and raunchy, ton of fun to talk too. Be sure to talk to him at least a little in office hours, u won't regret it, it's fun and it helps ur grade at the end of the semester
You just need to show up and read the books, it's pretty straightforward. He will give hints on what will be on the quizzes/tests.
I wasn't a huge fan of this class, but I eventually realized how much I took away from it. Sure, there are several readings (I had 10), but over half are cool comics that are quite intriguing, and you actually learn how to improve your writing and critical thinking. AND know your vocabulary and the names of the authors/artists (every pop quiz).
Professor Nericcio is a respectable and experienced professor. He gives plenty of extra credit opportunities and there is barely any hw. Just read, show up regularly since he has pop quizzes, and he will help you out in the end. He boosts grades if you have good attendance or show up at least once to his office hours.
These classes were genuinely so fun and interesting. Nericcio is a great professor who is super engaged in the material he teaches. With new perspectives, analysis and great presentation skills each class taught us something new- many times beyond the subject of comics and into our own personal lives. I would highly recommend this class!! 10/10
Great, knowledgeable professor. DO THE READINGS! Many students in the class don't do readings and come on here to complain about a bad grade. It is a college level course, so reading is expected. There are pop quizzes, however they are predictable. Always make sure you know authors, book titles, and main themes.
Dr. Nericcio has been my favorite professor so far! To pass his class you need to do actually do the readings and show up to class. He clearly wants students to succeed and he only pulls panels and excerpts that we talked about in class on the midterm and final. His expectations are reasonable and offers SO much extra credit! I loved this class!
Professor Nericcio taught one of the most unique classes I've taken. The content was a very diverse range of books and visual media; each one uniquely entertaining. The lectures were a wild experience and the class was always encouraged to engage, making it feel like some kind of unhinged book club. I wish I could take this class again!
He gives interesting/ passionate lectures. Attendance is mandatory. There is quite a bit of reading and little/no homework, but I found most of it was actually pretty neat. Pop quizzes are a pain. If you go to class and participate in the ways he asks, I found that when he's giving out final grades, he gives you a little boost.
Was genuinely surprised at how amazing this professor was going to be. If there's a class you see that you need for credit and Nericcio teaches it, take it over any other class. Great professor who cares a lot about participation and your respect for the works he teaches. If you ever aren't sure about a class, it will ALWAYS be on the calendar.
