I loved every minute of his class. I'm not that into US History but he made me like it a little more. Very good teacher very one you doesn't like history should take his class he will change you mind. Not boring at all.

MOST INTERESTING TEACHER ON CAMPUS! However, his test don't reflect everything cover in lecture and reading. Test are on a NATIONAL level which puts you an a dissadvantage. GOOD teacher to take, tests are a little sketchy

Dr. Newell is a brilliant instructor. those who have the opportunity to glean knowledge from his classes will be better for it. his classes made history as intense, fun, interesting, and sometimes silly as human sexual behavior. and that's hard to do.

great teacher makes history fun and interesting! if you are there everyday and take notes and go to his afterclass pre test note things then you should get a good grade! if you miss allot of class and rely on your natural knowladge of history then you will fail ! its fun though i doubt you would wanna miss the class ! :)

I hated history and dreaded in but he is the BEST teacher ever, and I ended up taking 3 classes with him, he makes it interesting and he tells you fun things that you would not hear from other teachers....his acts things out in class and gets so into his lectures, his test are hard but if you go to class and pay attention you will get at least a C....AWESOME TEACHER!!!!

MJC's best history teacher ever! Maybe even the best professor on campus. If you need to take a History class, TAKE NEWELL without a doubt! Very easy class if you attend each class and take notes.

Personally, I would not recommend this instructor to students who have Christian beliefs.He's offensive & mocks Christianity in his lectures. Furthermore, he seems to twist historical information to suit his own agenda.

I freakin love this guy,im so serious when i say he's the best teacher at MJC. Clearly takes through history, very funny, impersonates everyting! gives several tutorials for tests, at the end of semester if you are fall into a borderline grade, he will bump you up if he sees you attended tutorials.Highly recommed Dr. Newell! not to mention he's hot

Nice guy but you can't miss a class or you screw it all up. Not always clear about the essays. Slightly biased in whom he likes but is overall nice. The TA's are SO annoying though. I hate their tutorials and lectures. Overall a good class but hard to miss, and usually you don't want to. His stories are great.

History of the Far Western frontier. Pay attention and take notes. Go to the study sessions if you can, they help sooo much! Study for the tests and do the readings.

He makes history so interesting. I know that seems impossible but he really does. He is so enthusiastic and keeps you interested the whole lecture. Just take notes on everything he says and the tests will be a breeze

If your going to take history 101 i highly recommend you take it with Newell..I think is one of the only teachers on campus that knows how to teach! And him being hot is also a big plus! i took him for 101 and 102. He is so awesome! his lectures are so interesting. He gets so excited about history that it makes it not boring. You have to come to class though because missng one lecture will get you a bad grade on the test. He is, hands down, the best teacher i've ever taken!

Newell is the best Teacher! I took him for 101 and 102! listening to him lecture is seriously like watching a movie! he is loud, entertaining and knows alot of info! I could sit there for hours listening to him. YOu have to attend every lecture and take good notes. NO HOMEWORK! JUst lecture notes and 5 exams! I would recommend him HANDS DOWN

This class is SO easy. I recommend him for HIST 101 because he's such a great lecturer. At times, he can get repititive [that's the only thing that annoyed me]. But there's no HW, only five tests, and they're ALL from the lecture. Easy.

The details are clear, the text hardly used, the essays clear, tutorials are good if the TA is good, but the information is ALWAYS helpful for the test. Grade scale is curved. Lectures are entertaining. I used a computer to clearly track notes...I recommend it to all. Great teacher, great learning experience.

Freakin' awesome professor. DO NOT miss a day of class, you miss so much. He's hilarious, passionate, and still treats the students like adults. You get what you put in this class. WOW, he is a great entertainer! As a teacher he's alright, I found his tests to be extremly hard and even though I studied my butt off I still got a C. If you want more interaction in a class, dont take this one.

This guy is hilarious. Has no problem making fun of himself and others, and can turn boring historical events into captivating lectures. One knock is he sometimes repeats jokes, almost like he rehearses some Seems he knows the details and date of any event right off the top of his head. His tests aren't too bad and theres only reading as HW.

Notice all the positive comments. During lectures I forget I'm in class and I feel earger to know what will happen in the next class. Tests are based mainly on his lectures and reading emphasis. I think I'll get a B in the class. He is way better than any other Hist teacher I've had before.

Dr. Newell is an awesome teacher! All you need to do is take notes and read the chapters. He gives a reading emphasis so you know exactly what to study. Loud and scary, but in the best way. He recounts historical events like a storyteller. He really gets into the subject passionately (eg. He strangled an Overhead Projector while demonstrating who pissed off Coronado got after a translation problem with a native.)

Excellent instructor--but if you think you'll just be able to coast by attending the lectures, think again. There isn't much overlap in the lectures and the book material, so if you want a good grade you have to do both. Luckily, he's interesting enough that you can't sleep through the lectures.

The most popular instructor on campus. Always on top of his game, making lectures fun and fascinating. The information is easily structured for repetition on exams. Grades on a curve. Recognizes that it's only a survey course and doesn't burden you with a huge workload. Hard to get an A, but anyone can learn a lot and get a passing grade.

He brings enthusiasm back to a boring subject that some see history as. All the hard material is at the middle so basically the class begins easy, moderate in the middle, and easy again at the end. Focus on your notes and recommended readings, attend tutorial for the advantage of bumping up your grade, and attend class. Know his style and get an A.

I used to HATE history until I took Newell's classes. He makes it so interesting and exciting, and he doesn't make you memorize tons of dates. I took his History of the Far Western Frontier class just because I enjoy his teaching so much. Dr. Newell is simply the best. Getting an A in this class will not be easy. There are 4 tests in his class and 90% of the test questions are from lectures and the rest from the book. READ THE BOOK! Read it and you will score some easy points! Overall, best teacher I've ever had but had to work my behind off to get that A! Roughly 3-5 A's in a summer class of 188 students.

Newell is probably the best history teacher I have had. Every lecture is amazing and rarely every boring. YOU NEED TO ATTEND CLASS EVERYDAY AND TAKE A LOT OF NOTES. About 7 pages of notes per lecture! Don't skimp. I earned the highest grade in both history 101 and 102 with him. So take my advice. :P

I took Doc for 102 and was sweating I wasn't going to get into his 101 course. I am a history major, so a great professor is essential to my education. Doc is incredible. Show up, take notes, read what he tells you to read (30 pages TOTAL) and you will pass, easily. He wants his students to pass but moreover, he wants them to learn. Do not miss out

Prior to taking this course, I absolutely hated history. He completely changed my outlook. He makes class so much fun and you can tell he is so eager and passionate about teaching. Take him! You'll do good as long as you go to class, take notes, and study a bit. I never used the book.

Newell is a very entertaining prof but his class is extremely hard! Test consist of a essay and 50 or more multi choice ?'s that have a time limit of 1 hour. Class is bases on tests. If you do not do good under pressure do not take this class. Newell is a great teacher, I just need more time for tests. No date memorization nec. Show up take & notes

Professor Newell is awesome! He really loves what he does. You have to go to class every day or you will miss test info! He has five exams, including a final. Best professor at MJC, hands down. I took Bill for 101 and 102. Nobody knows history more than he. Not only does he teach history as a profession, he does research as a hobby; what passion! He digs out the details that texts books often omit. His narration style is third person, present-tense. Thus, it feels as like you are there in the action.

My god such an easy class, just attend class everyday and pay attention to the lecture, yes attendance is mandatory since exams are like 85% of lecture and rest on the book. Made history super fun. You read small sections in the book easy enough for me!Exams has mini essays + multiple.

I transferred from MJC a year ago and still haven't had a teacher as amazing as him. He is insanely funny and just a great guy. I took notes in class, reviewed them twice before each exam and ended up with an A. The people complaining he is difficult are in for a rude awakening if they intend to transfer to a four year. Would gladly take him again!

He made the subject fun. I am not a big history person but he made me excited to learn the subject matter. There is tutoring avail and he gives you all the information for his tests and essays. Show up for class and you won't be confused on the tests.

The only thing that disappoints me about Dr. Newell is that he does not teach more history classes at MJC! I had History 101 and 102 with him and I can honestly say that those were my favorite semesters. Everything you need to know, he covers in lecture. Attendance is SUPER important. AMAZING professor! Highly recommend to anyone.

he was alright he's a clear talker a bit rude at times but he curves your grade so i passed with a C without really studying just make sure to attend class it's a must he does try to help out don't be late he doesn't like that either hIstory 101

I am currently taking Hist 101. He is a great teacher because he made me actually like history! i used to do really bad in it for being a 3.5 student but he makes it an easy B. Definitely read what he tells you to and go to lecture. The study group he provides is REALLY helpful. One of the best teachers I've had.

Great teacher. Dedicated to his students and history. Showing up to class and taking notes is all you need to do to prepare yourself for the tests. only 4 tests and the final. Book is rather expensive especially considering how little you use it. Would definitely recommend taking this course with this professor.

Newell is a fun teacher. Very enthusiastic about History. He does not give any homework, only tests. Everything you need to know is in the lectures, so don't miss class. He made class fun by using diffrent voices and giving random facts out. Tells you exactly what's on the test. Just go to class and use the reading emphasis.

Awesome! I would recommend it for those who absolutely hate history. Mostly lectures and very passionate. As long as you take notes the class should be fairly easy. Handouts will be provided for topics not covered on the lectures; so read those along with study group times. Few things: Don't be late or talk during lectures!

He's great for any one who isn't particularly interested in History. Really great way in which he presents material and gets you to invest in the class. Makes history relateable and relevant.

Dr. Newell's class was one of my favorites. I took him for 101 and then decided to take him for 102 and I don't regret it! As long as you study and pay attention to his lectures, you'll do fine. I personally didn't purchase the book and passed with a B but if you would want an A then I recommend actually buying the book.

Hilarious!! Makes history fun! His eyes cut through you like daggers if you have to make up an exam though (just don't do it). READ the book. A lot of what is on the test is NOT in lecture, so you MUST read. Also, don't be intimidated by essay questions. He ALWAYS explains the topics in great detail . Best history teacher at MJC by far.

A god among men, Professor Newell is by far my favorite teacher. He took a boring subject and made it into something worthwhile. I have never been prouder to be an American in my life. I could drone on and on about how this class gives me a hard-on but instead I will get into the meat of things. Book barely used, lecture is life, and test are easy.

Best professor I've had by far! He makes lectures so interesting you won't want to miss class. But if you have to, make sure you get notes from someone cause you'll be missing a lot of needed info. My first day of class i thought this guy was crazy.. but honestly you grow to adore the humor from him!! you can tell he loves his job and gets very in to his lectures. William Newell's class was easily my favorite class i've attended at MJC. His lectures are fun, engaging, and interesting, and this is coming from someone who doesn't particularly take an interest in History. Expect to take four or more pages of notes each day, and he has about 5 exams (final included). Do yourself a favor and take Newell's class!

i took him for history 101 his lectures are not boring he loves history i would def take him again also he grades on a curve he said because he knows how i feels to be a few points away from a better letter grade i passed because his curve because i didnt read and study much so my fault

Newell is a good teacher. Make sure to be in class and take notes or you wont pass. If your good at history you wont have to use the book, but if you need a little extra help reading the book is helpful. Very passionate about history which shows in his lectures. No homework just tests which consist of multiple choice and an essay. Study and pass!

Newell's love for history shines through every second of his lectures which helps for someone who isn't very fond of history (like me) from getting distracted. Must attend class!!! I missed one class and it hit my grade hard. Love how he includes fun/person details about the historical figures we discuss. 5 exams in total (m/c + mini essay).

This professor is really awesome! His lectures are so interesting and he is funny. You have to read a lot so be sure to have the book. He does have a power point or anything fancy, but he does use an over head projector (the really old kind). So he writes everything in expo marker. He speaks from memory. So you have to take notes from words.

I had Dr. Newell for 101, and 102 and I can honestly say he's one of the best professors at MJC. He's very passionate about his job, he makes lectures entertaining and he can really hold the classes' attention. Just read the chapters he assigns, and study his reading emphasis and you'll pass with a good grade. I highly recommend him for history.

SI sessions are available but I personally did not find them as helpful. Pay attention in class and write good notes and you will pass easily. His grading curves ensure students to pass with a C.

Amazing lectures and keeps you interested in class. He does not allow extra credit and hates if you are late. I took Dr Newells class in the summer and he was great. You have to pay attention in the lectures because he does speak very quick but he explains everything really well. He is very specific on what he wants you to read in the book and sometimes goes over it in class. I went to si sessions that were very helpful and most that went got an A.

Definitely one of the best professors at MJC. He's very enthusiastic & engaging. His tests are based off his lectures so note taking is crucial, but his lectures are paced well enough so you can write everything down and understand what's important. Super easy test grading scale. If you go to SI sessions, you really don't have to study beyond that.

The lectures were great. The tests were difficult because they paid a lot of attention to "small" details from both the reading and the lectures. There's no homework, only tests and some in class essays. Don't worry about the essays Newell prepares you for them.

I would recommend his class to anyone lectures are funny and he has a unique way of bringing historical figures to life. Never ever be late or miss his class though.

Great passionate teacher i would greatly recommend professor newel, i took eva mo first and i have to say the two classes were like night and day, i put full effort and still failed eva mo's class, prof. newell's class i learned so much even though i already took history the prior semester and put full effort and i was rewarded

I had fun listening and observing Mr. Newell, as well as jotting down notes. at first I didn't quite understand but at first I had gotten the hang and idea of things that were being discussed in his class, it started to all come together after hearing and seeing what he wanted us to hear and be able to understand the different understandings.

Professor Newell is awesome. He has AMAZING lectures that are so enjoyable to listen too. I'm not a history fan but always look forward to his class. Attending class is the only way you will pass because the tests contain mostly lecture note questions. He wants his students to succeed and with good notes it's an easy A. I highly recommend him.

This guy redefines history lectures. He is so smart and very funny. It's a lot of notes but trust me it's worth being in his classes.

Took History 101 with him and waited till I was able to fit him into my schedule for 102. Tells lectures with enthusiasm and makes it sound like a story. Exams are based off lecture, so don't miss class. My advice is don't wait the day or two before and exam to study. It is alot of information. Highly recommended!

I took him for my 1st history class this summer. He uses the old school overhead b/c they are ugly & easy to remember. He's loud enough to get the topic drilled into your mind. He loves questions, so feel free to ask away. Do the readings & the chapter emphasis. Attend study sessions if they are available, since those are a great help as well.

I loved this class! I thought it was going to be hard because of all the notes but as long as you show up and pay attention you will get a good grade. He only gives four tests which were long but he covers everything in class.

Newell is the only history professor I've ever enjoyed. He doesn't give homework, so the only thing you're graded on is the 4 tests he gives. His grading scale isn't typical because he knows it can be difficult. Tests are 80% lecture so you can pass without reading, but DO NOT miss class! ESPECIALLY the day after a test!!!!

Professor Newell is my favorite professor at Modesto Junior College. If you actually want to learn history, he will make it very intriguing. He tells history like a seamless story that all flows together. Hes an infinite well of knowledge and can answer any history question from memory. Definitely would take his class again.

He does require you to be at all classes, but for your best interest in order to not miss any content. He is a wonderful man and professor, and the way he lectures is so enticing. Took Newell for 101 and 102, he was so awesome! Your class grade will be all based on the test. The tests consist of multiple choice and an essay portion. The essay portion he will tell you what he wants you to write, paragraph by paragraph. For the multiple choice, it all comes straight from the lecture, he never made us read. Makes it a story!

You do have to pay close attention, take good notes, and study for his exams because exams make up your entire grade. If you want an easy A I don't suggest him, but if you want to enjoy the class I HIGHLY suggest him!!

Take really good notes and pay attention to in-class lectures. There are no lectures online. His lectures are interesting and highly is part of you getting an A in his exams. Grades depend only on total of your 4 exams, some have essay writings, but he gives you all the information you need in class. No assignments or extra credits. STUDY!

There are four exams with a take home essay for each exam. I purchased the book and never opened it, however, I still received an B. Everything you need to know he mentions it during lecture. I have enrolled in history 102 for next semester. I highly recommend Dr. Newell.

The book is needed for things that he doesn't cover in the lectures but if you do not attend the lectures you won't pass because 95% of the material comes from him directly. He knows so much that he will test you on things that aren't in the text so take good notes and use flashcards and you'll get an A. If u have the opportunity, take this class.

I enjoyed his class when I took it back in fall 2018. The lectures were interesting and eye-opening, revolving around the civil war era and beyond. He would go into full detail of major events and would have a good 5-7 tests throughout the semester. They were easy if you studied hard on the lecture, and on some of the textbook too.

I have taken Professor Newell for both History 101 and 102 and every semester I am so sad when it ends. He truly cares about teaching and his students, he is lecture heavy but you will be so intrigued you wont even know an hour has passed. I would urge you to take him. HES AMAZING!!!!!

While taking Dr. Newell's History 101 class, I was enthralled. You can tell he loves what he teaches and truly cares about his students. If you miss a lecture, you're out of luck, however, you won't want to miss a lecture because they're interesting. There are only a few exams and a few short papers, no busywork. Doctor Newell is a GREAT lecturer. In addition to focal points, he adds interesting historical tidbits which bring history to life. His teacher's aid is great as well. Newell... where to start? I took his history class pre- Covid when lectures were in person, and every class was like watching the Steve Irwin of history. Legendary. His class tends to be lecture heavy and not for the academically faint of heart, but the man is a walking history collection- I highly recommend him.(Just don't be late!)

HE IS AN EXTRAORDINARY TEACHER!!! I am a sophomore in highschool and I found this class fun and quite easy. DON'T MISS CLASS. For me personally that wasn't a problem but because I was part of 'the people who take stuff seriously' group, but I had way too many people asking me for notes because they missed multiple classes. One of the best history courses I have taken. Professor Newell bing the content to life and always is so passionate. His passion rubs off on you and makes it so easy to learn. Course I took was half a semester, so lectures were long but he kept it interesting and they went by quick. Grades were on Essays and Exams. There was no homework other than reading from the textbook. Attend every class and turn every assignment on time! And there are Study SI sessions to help prepare you for the tests.

His lectures and classes are mandatory (not for your grade, but because he goes over a lot of information). He does not accept any late work BUT he has an amazing teaching style. Coming from someone who has a hard time staying concentrated, I was able to sit there and not only learn, but I was able to get an interesting view of history.

I absolutely loved taking Doc! He is a fantastic professor. There's no homework, just essays, and exams. Each essay is done in class on zoom and he gives the prompt in class as well. Dr. Newell is an AMAZING professor! He clearly loves what he teaches and truly cares for his students. The SI offered by Morgan was helpful when taking exams. Do the reading and attend lectures or you'll fail. Dr. Newell is very easy to contact as well as the SI person

The best part about this class was the lack of homework! Unless you call the small amount of textbook readings homework. Dr. Newell puts the "story" in "history" and he is a master at work. I have had the privilege to have him show me how he sets up a lecture and the amount of constant research and growth he puts into them. Wonderful professor.

Just take his class. You won't regret it, Amazing lectures and fun to talk to. Most the people who complain are typically people with older views on life and politics.

I go to Columbia College but I took this class at MJC and I'm so glad I did. Newell is passionate about history and it shows in the way he teaches. His lectures are always fun and entertaining, attendance is required but you will find that you WANT to participate. It is test heavy, but he gives you everything you need to succeed. Take good notes!

I truly enjoyed 101 with Doc. His lectures are captivating and his passion is palpable. I never cared much for history until Doc opened my eyes. Looking forward to 102. Thank you!

Newell is very passionate and knowledgeable. The least boring lecturer I've had, so far. He's very explicit about what he expects and it's reasonable. That said, he's paranoid about cheating, doesn't record lectures, and beware if you have accommodations. Wouldnt honor my dsps form until he was forced to, which made me feel like absolute crap.

His lectures are interesting, and it is obvious that he knows what he is talking about. Great professor.

VERY good at lecturing. no idea how he keeps his energy so high and passionate after 3 hour lectures. work is easy, i never needed a textbook, but the tests can be long. as long as you take notes though, and have common sense, youll be ok. fun class and funny guy kinda scary though but he's super cool.

Doc was awesome! honestly as long as you show up and take thorough notes you'll get through it EASILY. Genuinely have never loved lectures, but this class really changed things for me. Tests could be long but easy with notes. Take notes, take notes, take notes!!!! they are so useful. Also be consistent. Show up every lecture and test day!

I enjoyed Doc's class. Lectures were long but boy did he make them interesting. Not once did he fail to present information clearly, at least for me. Tests were also a bit long but he made it clear which portions of the textbook would be on the test. Make sure to take very good notes and STUDY THEM!!! Very important!

He is excellent at giving lectures; you can tell he understands what he is talking about and enjoys what he does since he made them so engaging. It was an excellent class overall, but his tests are open notes, so you have to take notes on everything he says during the presentations.

Top fav, 3 hour lectures not bad bc of how interesting they were. course is based off of exams and 3 'essays'. He gives you the answer to the essay clearly stating what he wants you to include.Don't think too much about it, simply what he asks you to put. Exams open note and timed. get good notes, fast paced lectures. Amazing guy amazing lectures.

I took the 10 week class and it was very easy if you pay attention to the lectures/take notes. There was not one homework assignment, at least for the shortened class. We would have a few lectures, do an essay, then do a multiple choice exam. The essays are super easy; you don't have to cite sources and he basically tells you exactly what to write

This class is amazing (personal opinion.) It is mandatory on lectures as most of what he goes over in class will be on the test. The textbook reading is light you have 5 Exams and 3 five paragraph essays. All you have to do is show up take notes and enjoy the lectures. Definitely recommend this course, and attending SI sessions!

an amazing professor! attend every class bc his lectures are super important since the material from them are gonna be 100% on the test. so take very good notes and be sure not to miss a class. i like the way he teaches it gets u immersed into the class and i never felt bored. also attend SI sessions they really helped me. overall i love this class

LOVEDD DOC!! I am taking his 102 class next semester. He was very good at lecturing. It wasn't just boring droning about some random dead guys. I would recommend taking his accelerated course. Make sure you take good notes and go to the SI Sessions if you can !!

Professor Newell is easily the best professor at MJC! He makes history so interesting that I almost considered switching my major. Very kind-hearted and intelligent; I can see why he is so well respected. Not a SINGLE homework assignment all semester just 5 exams and 3 essays. Take good notes during lecture, attend SI sessions, and you will pass!

Mr Newell is a very good professor his class is lecture heavy and very entertaining I showed up everyday and took lots of notes NOTES IS KEY you take 3 tests and you also do 3 essays which he tells you what to write if you want to pass this class I recommend to be a good note taker and you will be fine! Also go to the study sessions they reallyhelp

Doc is VERY funny and nice, would definitely take his class again! He is so passionate and it makes learning about history easier. I ended up almost crying at a couple of the videos he showed us. Do NOT try to handwrite notes if you can't go fast!! There is a lot of material. Use recording apps or type notes!

The ABSOLUTE BEST PROFESSOR IN MJC! I took his 102 and I'm doing 101 now. Easily the most caring, professional, funny, respected and amazing professor you'll ever have in your life. I look forward to his classes all week. I did both online and onsite with him and I enjoyed onsite so much more, I worked around my work if it means I take HIS class.

Great Professor. I take his 102 online. Make sure you take good notes and go to every lecture. Other than that you only have to do quizzes and a few essays. This final exam is just the last exam from the class.

I would recommend this class for people that don't miss class. If you miss class you won't pass. There is no homework and the test is based all off the lecture. He makes the lectures super interesting and you can even use your notes on the test. Would recommend taking 102 as well.

Zero homework, 3 hr long class. He was extremely entertaining and would reenact history and make it interesting and fun. Open note tests, tests online. Very nice professor and keeps the long class interesting the whole time, got a 10 min break each class. Would definitely recommend taking his class

If you fail with his class it's genuinely because you never tried. I had one class with him in person and one online and I had extremely good experience both times. He's always very high energy and passionate about his class. His presentations are funny and he tells you EXACTLY what you need to know to pass his exams are super straight forward

Absolutely loved his class and his lectures. You could definitely tell he loves what he does. attendance is mandatory if you want the past the class. There are five tests in total and three or four essays along with that and that is your whole grade. The test and the essays were not hard at all they're all based off the notes he gives you.
