Best professor I've had in all four years of University. I regret not taking his chem classes. I seriously have a crush on him. :)
Do the assignments!
Very very good prof. Expect to do well on midterms if you do and understand the assignments. Makes organic chemistry so much easier and clearer. Midterms are fair. Expect some good laughs in his ppt asides during the lecture. Loves to help his own classes with the labs. Take this prof if you can. Attending classes are mandatory if you want to pass
great prof makes course somewhat enjoyable
Ogilvie is an organic chemistry god! It's not easy but this is university. suck it up, study hard and you'll make it. You only need his notes, don't bother with the textbook. If you need it once in a while save your money and go see it at the library.
Teaches everything crystal-clear, no bias, helps his class with half of the labs, gives lots of examples & hints. He also gives very interesting mini-presentations that will make you laugh from time to time =). However, don't underestimate the course material!
This man was born to be a professor. He teaches by writing notes on a tablet in a systematic approach to solving problems. I'm just disappointed that he isn't teaching 2nd year courses! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!
Worst prof ever. Can't teach. Boring material unless you are a chem major or love chem.
I always hated chem because I could never understand how it applied. He made it relate to real life with his slideshows, and actually made me care about the subject. How he teaches, writing notes on a tablet, is fantastic too (but it makes it difficult if you ever have to miss a class for whatever reason.).
AMAZING prof.
Awesome prof! Go to class, take notes and do the assignments and you'll end up with a great mark. One of the best profs at uOttawa.
The best first-year professor that you'll ever get! Midterms and exams are fair and the teaching is excellent. Really good at keeping interest for everyone (even people who hate Organic Chem). Early material may be boring but the fundamentals will carry through to Organic Chem II and beyond.
One of the best professors i've ever had. He's really funny, keeps you interested in what he's trying to teach, delivers info with amazing clarity. If you have the option of having him has a prof, take it! you won't regret it :). To top it all off, he's amazingly cute!
He teaches you how to think about organic chemistry as well as keeping it interesting with real-world applications. Thanks to him, Boddy's orgo II exams didn't murder me and I'm looking forward to my (optional!) future orgo classes.
excellent prof, explains material in detail and with clarity. makes lectures interesting and funny, he's adorable! although you MUST attend all if not most classes to pass, if you pay attention and do the assignments, there's no reason why you shouldn't come out with an A. definitely take his class if you can, it will get you throw orgo no problem
This prof is the best. Clear in his readings, and his exams reflect what he says in class... Attend his lectures, pay attention and you'll for sure do well. If you have a chance to take his class, definitely recommend you do.
THE best! Attend class and take notes and there's no reason you cant get an A. Class averages were almost 80. That being said, it is important to study. The material is enjoyable and can actually be used in everyday situations. He is too chill and never tries to trick you on tests. Tests completely reflect his lectures.
Good prof. Attending all classes, taking diligent notes, and doing all of his assignments is the key to getting an A+. The only negative is that you spend a lot of class time writing instead of understanding the material - but this is also due to the nature of the material (e.g. writing reaction mechanisms), so it's not really his fault.
He's the best prof I've ever had. Getting an A+ is easy as long as you do the assignments and take advantage of his office hours when you don't understand something...the labs were long and not even worth much but the lab exam is on the final so make sure you understand as you do your lab report! side note: prof Ogilvie is cute.
Very helpful and clear in every way.
Great prof. Very kind.
great prof
he's good
Amazing prof! Knows how to keep the course interesting. He often gives hints to exams and loves to joke (including on the exams themselves). I definitely recommend him!!!!!
Cute, good sense of humor and also intelligent. I had him only for drugs 101, but he also teaches orgo chem and is said to be a fiiiiine teacher (and hes attractive wut wut)
This is the prof who puts his teaching before his research. His passion fostered a love for organic chem from the whole class. He is very helpful as well - just go to his office hours prepared and he's happy to walk you through problems. FAIR exams, some questions copy/pasted from assignments that he highlighted and explained in lecture.
love the prof and love the class, highly recommend!!
AWESOME PROF! The course material was VERY interesting. Always excited to come to class, his midterms and final were VERY easy and straight forward. No tricks with this guy. Does in class demos to make things fun. Only wish I took Organic chem 1 and 2 with him! Don't hesitate to take a class with him! Can't praise him enough!!
I had him for orgo chem I and drugs 101. I love this man, its that simple. Dr. Ogilvie will you marry me?!
Great professor, super clear and tells you exactly what his expectations are. Midterms and final was fair. If you attend the DGDs and do all of the assignments, and dont do an assignment once then never come back to it, keep redoing them all, and you will be golden. Some questions were even copied and pasted from the assignments onto the tests.
I now understand why ppl fight to get into his section of the course, and go 20 min. early for class to get the best seat. He's the BEST teacher at UOtt. Go to every class, DO the assignments, and it's almost a guaranteed A+. Exams are fair/easy, no surprises. This guy is a legend! Seriously gonna miss this prof/class! I wish he taught orgo 2 & 3.
One of my faves! Easy to follow/clear notes, loved his lectures because he knew what he was talking about and was so funny. Go to the DGDs and do the assignments more than once; a lot of the questions are copy and pasted into midterms/final. I found the midterms and final very fair. Great class overall
BEST. PROF. EVER. Just go to every single class and pay attention (he makes it super fun and enjoyable). He puts assignments online with solutions for you to practice - do all 11 and you'll get an A+ in the course. Just an amazing prof; go talk to him during office hours and he'll happily help you if you're struggling.
Ogilvie makes the course interesting and relatively easy. Do all of his assignments, attend all classes, and seek help during office hours and there is no reason you can't excel in Orgo 1. Midterms and Final are definitely fair and reflect what is taught in class. Switched into his section last minute and had no regrets; highly recommend this prof!
AMAZING! Always looking out for the students best interest when it comes to marking!
He quotes Breaking Bad on his midterms.... Need I say more? This guy is the bomb-dot-com
Awesome prof! Had him for drugs 101 and would take another class with him in a heart beat. Go to class and study for the midterm and you have an easy 90!
awesome. So interesting. Only prof ive ever had that i just want to be friends with. Hes so awesome
Attendance is not mandatory, but you won't want to miss a single class. His explanations are clear and the course content is extremely useful. However, a lot of stuff is covered in classes and you will need to study for the midterms. Overall the best course I have ever taken.
Best prof I've ever had. He does everything in his power for you to succeed. He makes class stimulating by having experiments/organized activities. He's really funny which makes some of the drier lectures more enjoyable. He's very passionate about what he teaches and he's very open and easy to ask questions to. I'd recommend this class to anyone.
SUCH A GOOD PROF. Adds 1% bonus to everyones grades at the end of the semester and has a variable marking scheme in case you tank a midterm or a final. Really funny
Ogilvie is a straight G. One of the best prof's I'v ever had. If this guy ever checks this page out and is reading this I just wanna say, "you da man Ogilivie!"
Good prof, engaging and informative, but he speaks way too fast for students to take ample notes. Expect hundreds of slides and facts in each lecture. Take smart notes and study the slides. Good luck to you all :)
Overall, professor Ogilvie is a good prof! Complete assignments, review notes, and you'll be good. Study hard for the exam because it can really boost your grade (worth up to 65%). Sometimes he goes too fast during his lectures so be prepared to write fast. Overall a fun class! Harder than CHM1311 but for someone who likes chemistry, it's awesome.
very interesting professor. Didn't post any notes online so missing class meant getting notes from someone else. Looks like the kind of guy who tore up the poontang when he was young.
What a guy. He speaks really fast and goes through about a hundred slides each lecture (I recommend typing notes). But, this course is very interesting and he gets the main message across. A no brainer course to take with him
Funny, friendly prof. Interesting and useful course material. Doesn't post notes online, so go to class or have a friend who will give you the notes. Covers a lot of material per class (I typed my notes and still found I was missing some information). Take this course for an easy A!
The most amazing professor at the Faculty of Science, Ogilvie and his sense of humour take the class to the next level. The course consisted of very interesting material and all multiple choice exams. A brilliant course for anyone looking for an easy A+ with a an equally brilliant professor!
BEST TEACHER EVER
10 outta 10. Always loved going to class. Ogilvie is super funny and explains things very well. Make sure you go over your notes and do your assignments 15,000 times because if you think you understand it in class, you wont when you try to do it later.
No textbook, write down everything he says and it will be easy.
Ogilvie for President
dedicated to his work. he is awesome and loves doing what he does. he is very nice. HOWEVER he is really fast and does not post his lectures or podcast. he tells you to "stop me when I'm fast" but in a class of 400+ its embarrassing so be prepared to write a lot (10-11 pages per lec) midterms are not as easy as people say. you still gotta work.
No surprises on the midterm but goes super fast during class. He's pretty funny too
Great prof. He is very helpful. Go to his office hours and you will be surprised how helpful he is. Exams are all multiple choices and mostly based on his lecture. Be sure to go to his class and he does not require any textbooks.
I took this course as an elective.. didn't find it easy (for an elective) and didn't do good for an elective. If your not in science don't take this class as it won't be the easy A you expected! Lectures are really long and as the material may seem easy he asks specific questions on the midterm and exams so you need to know your stuff and terms.
Easy class. Attendance recommended. Threw me a real curve ball with the cumulative final though ogilvie. How am I supposed to memorise 10 gorillion pages of information?
Solid teacher. Goes through pages on pages of notes each lecture, but most things are well-explained and follow the same patterns when you get the hang of it. Keep up with the assignments (they're long!) and you'll do great in orgo. Also the practise midterms are key; midterms are almost exactly the same as the samples. Highly recommend his class!
His slide shows are over 100 slides each with a single point on each slide. It makes studying very difficult. Anyone who says this is an easy A is wrong because the midterms are based on the most random stuff from the classes. Pay attention and write down everything he says because thats what the midterms are on.. he takes little from the slides
Very good prof, likes to make jokes about the course material and relates to his own experiences. Lectures can be long but they are essential to attend. All exams are multiple choice and he doesn't give surprising or misleading questions. Overall, one of my favourite profs, I would definitely take his class again!
Amazing professor!
Ogilvie is an amazing prof! You can tell that he really cares about his students. As long as you go to class, take ample notes and do the assingments you will be fine. However, he does not post any notes online so you have to go to class and pay attention
As a fourth year student taking this course as an elective, I found the material easy but there is way too much to know. Prof is amazing, explains things well and is clear - but based on the ratings I thought this would be simple, but with a cumulative exam, the amount of info you need to know is beyond realistic. It's way too much.
Fantastic professor! Able to translate difficult material in a way that is easy to grasp. Incredibly helpful, clear, and has a great sense of humour. Lectures are interesting but fast paced, so be sure to keep up, stay focused, and be prepared to write a lot. Exams are very fair, similar to samples and assignments. Hands down the best orgo 1 prof!
ogilvie is so bae when it comes to orgo 1. super helpful and provides everything necessary to do well. do assigments multiple times!! can ogilvie please teach orgo 2?????
Excellent prof and I very much enjoyed the content. That being said, not an easy A+ anymore. I got the chance to see a past midterm, and his exams are more specific nowadays. Also, enormous amount of info to know for the final. As a health sc student, I wasn't looking to spend as much time studying for an elective. Much easier electives out there
Amazing lectures. You take your own notes, but he writes them with you, so the pace is perfect and everything that is written is explained. He is very helpful, open door policy, and gives hints for exams. Incredibly charming man, with a good sense of humour. Really knows his stuff, like a pro.
He is by far an amazing prof, he is funny and is clearly into what he teaches. Any questions you have he will answer. The course itself is fairly easy to do well in because the grading criteria. However, if you don't study or attend class you won't pass. The mid- terms and final are tricky. Beware: very science - based. Course is interesting.
Good prof that's very clear and helpful, but not as easy as everyone says. Of course it isn't the easiest course out there, but I didn't find he helped transition well from the easy first midterm to the significantly harder second one. Got a 92 on the first one and a 66 on the second with the same amount of studying. Still the best option for Orgo
Here's a short summary of what he did during this class: -Drink cyanide to disprove homeopathy -Made the entire class take a placebo -Made a girl experiment with capsaicin cures (including beer) My only downside? He is very biased and has very strong opinions about some subjects. Otherwise, he was awesome.
Just do the assignments and you'll be fine! His questions are straight off of the assignment questions and the questions he went over in class lectures. He makes the midterms and exams very easy so don't worry about the complicated stuff! He's overall an awesome lecturer and keeps his long lectures interesting with good humor! Love him as a prof!
Saying this man descended from Heaven is an understatement. The guy is phenomenal. I took Drugs and Orgo I with him and got an A+ in both classes. If you have any problems at all talk to him after class or his office hours, he is one of the most humble and funniest profs ever! Any person who would say otherwise is extremely delusional.
Alright, listen up kids. I took this man for ORGO 1 his midterms are fair and pretty simple, but to practice for his midterms you have to go through his assignments which are very difficult and his final was brutal. he speaks waaaay to fast in class and writes even faster. all notes are 100% hand written.
Absolutely loved Drugs 101! First class I've ever had that I enjoyed going to and was actually useful for everyday life. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Definitely the prof you want for CHM1321. He focuses on what actually matters and will explain it in a different manner if needed. Ogilvie will brighten your day and isn't afraid to pull out some chemistry puns during his lectures. Take his class. You won't regret it.
Dr. Ogilvie's seen it all over decades in academia and industry. He'll get a little cynical during his pharmaceutical talks (based on his experiences) but his lectures were never boring! On tests, extremely fair and accommodating - as long as you're consistently studying the material. You're guaranteed to get something interesting out of the class!
Nice to look at, funny and keeps your attention. Overall the class itself was hard but he is still clear. The class is hard due to the course content but he teaches it as best he can.
I'm terrible at chemistry and he helped me out soooo much. Always willing to spend time with you during his office hours to go over concepts you need help with. His lectures are in depth and he always manages to make it interesting. Would take his class again even though I don't need any more chem credits because he's such a fun prof!
For this class, Ogilvie wrote out the notes on an iPad connected to the projector screen, making it super easy to follow while keeping the class on a steady pace. He also verbally explained them while writing. If you do all of his problem sets and understand them, you should be in for an A- minimum. Best professor I've had so far. No notes online.
One of the overall best professors I have ever had. Knows what he is talking about from both a knowledge base and personal experience. Very clear and informative in lectures, but you must take all notes that he says, because the slides are empty with only captions and pictures. YOU MUST GO TO CLASS. Would take a million times over.
Awesome prof! Definitely the best I've had in first year. Really have to attend lectures; a lot of what he says in class will be in exams (and not necessarily in PowerPoints). Exams are fair and reflect what was covered in class. His lectures are so clear that I am a francophone (in a French program) and taking this class in English was great!
Seems easy, took expecting to get a 10.0; Rest in Pieces Slides on BBL are basically 80% blank so you need to attend lecture to fill in the rest, otherwise you're kind of doomed Midterms & Final all MC but pretty hard, no option is ever really a giveaway wrong answer NOT A BIRD COURSE
No alarms and no surpises
Ogilvie is an amazing prof and makes the lectures interesting. Although the material is stuff you will remember, there is ALOT of content, all which is included on the final exam. If you're looking for a bird course, this is not the course for you. However, if you are willing to learn practical material and study lots, I highly recommend it!
Goto to class, everything he talks about is fair game. Not bad to get a B+/A-, but you gotta work for that A/A+. Material is very interesting and applies to real life even if you dont know too much about science/organic chem. Trust me when I say this man is a angel descended from the heavens compared to other profs.
Best prof I have had yet! You should absolutely try to get into one of his classes! Do the assignments and you'll do awesome. Also you really don't need a text book.
Ogilvie, not only are you one of the most attractive professors at this school, your lectures are amazing. Keep doing u
Inconsistent speeds with the material, maybe that's just me. Finished the material 3 lectures early.
Great prof and knows what he is talking about! There were two midterms and one final, but no assignments. No textbook!! Great class for nursing students because it is relative to the field and light compared other classes. However, there is lots of content.
He's really funny and genuinely wants you to do well if you put the effort into it! there is a looot of material to memorize but if you go to class and take your own notes, you could get a high mark without much trouble. one of my favourite classes this semester :) hands down my favourite teacher , keep on doing you ogilvie
When we discover how to clone people my only wish is to clone hundreds of variant Ogilvies who are proficient in all subjects to teach every single university class ever. If you go to class, and do the assignments, you cannot fail. He was always available for help, and doesn't give surprise questions. Other profs should take note from Ogilvie!
The BEST choice for Orgo 1. He explains concepts very well, and is always available for questions. He gives a lot of assignments, but the tests (very fair!) are based on the same questions, and you will not fail if you work on them. Make sure to go to class, since he does not post any lecture notes online. If only he taught Orgo 2 as well...
By far the best prof I've had so far! Very fair midterms/final! Interesting class, contains a good bit of material to memorize but proficient studying is enough to get you a good mark. You must go to class in order to take notes as his slides contain little detail. I highly recommend this class & prof!
Beauty professor , he's honestly the best. Even if somehow you don't manage to do well in his class ( super unlikely) ... you will learn so much in that class. You need to go to every lecture but totally worth it. Take him even if it's not part of your program. You'll be glad you did!
If you do the assignments and practice midterms you will be more than fine. His tests are very fair and takes questions directly from the assignments. In general, he will give you a bonus question that incorporates a more difficult mechanism/concept. Make sure to show up to class since that's the only place you get notes. He was def my fav prof
Easy A. Prof is hilarious and his lectures are entertaining. Really interesting class would 10/10 recommend. Everything including exam is all multiple choice and they're super easy. As long as you study for the midterm you will get an A. Has a few tricky questions but nothing outrageous that you can't figure out
Great prof! Super clear and interesting course content which is actually helpful information in real life. All multiple choice exams which he weights according to how well you do on them, making it easier to end up with a good mark even if you don't do as well on one. Tests are very straight forward. No textbook. Would definitely recommend!
BEST class i've ever taken. Class was never a dull moment (for me at least). If you want to learn something that applies to your life, take this class. The prof is engaging. funny, and entertaining overall. Easy A if you go to class (or have someone go for you) and take the time to go over the lectures. Some slides he leaves blank!
ORGO 1 Pros: Very clear with his speech; will never go on useless tangents. He never teaches something that you won't need on the midterms/final. ie: If you do badly on one, it's never his fault. He will gladly answer emails. My favourite thing about him is he managed to make an extremely difficult course look easy. Cons: NONE
Have no idea how I manged to bump my garde to an A- after doing a SUPER EASY FINAL. :( The class was very easy and I now know my favorite subject is orgo by far. Tip: after the first midterm, you'll start to find things getting harder and more complex but you really just have to sit down and look at your notes. Best prof ever. Labs suck.
Definitely recommend seeing him during office hours if you do not understand the concept. He said to me "IYou're paying 7 grand to learn don't feel bad for asking for extra help."
Don't take orgo with anyone else! Here's how you can do well: Go to class (he won't post notes online). Do the assignments + past midterms/exams twice. If you do all this, you're basically guaranteed an A-. He is a super fair prof and he's not trying to trick you. He gives you everything you need to succeed, you just need to do the work.
Class was by far the most interesting I have ever been to. Lots of information to know for the exam, it was tough because the material consists of a lot of random facts. overall enjoyed the class though. Lots of studying involved but would still take again
He is extremely clear on what you are expected to know for the midterms/exams. If you successfully complete his assignments, you will do well in the class. Try to actually understand why things happen, rather then just memorizing that they do. Also attend the DGDs, I found them to be a valuable resource that definitely benefited my grade.
Awesome professor, and really interesting course! Would definitely take a class with him again. Tests are very fair, just show up to class and take good notes and you'll be good!
Such an amazing, funny prof who really wants his students to succeed. Do his assignments and the sample midterms more than once before a midterm and you'll do great. Never touched a textbook for the course all you need are the questions he provides! If you don't understand something go ask him he's great. PLEASE TEACH ORGO 2 PROFESSOR OGILVIE!
Super easy 100% (not kidding, got over 100 on both midterms). Uses SAME QUESTIONS from assignments/previous tests that he gives you on BBL. Labs easy (can find online/through upper years). DONT TAKE ANYONE ELSE (dad jokes on fire). Class is great (never drags, keeps interesting). You don't really HAVE to go to every one (but I suggest it). Txtbk no
Prof. Ogilvie is amazing. His lectures are good and although they are filled with a lot of information he breaks everything down to step by step processes. His midterms are the exact same as the ones he gives on BB so make sure to use those. The final is easy to pass if you do the assignments he gives. It is very hard to fail orgo with him teaching
Really engaging prof. If you're taking BPS1101, you have to go to class bc the notes he posts don't cover the material - they're just images. Extremely interesting topics (chosen by him) and easy to do well on the midterms and exam - they're all multiple choice and cover exactly what was discussed in lectures - no tricks! Easy A for sure
Literally the worst prof I've ever had. He's taught the course so many times that he just breezes through, blabbing and reading from him notes in front of him. He writes ridiculously fast, doesn't slow down and will not post his notes online. Good luck with this guy. He's such crap.
Lecture notes are very disorganized and hard to follow. I spent hours reviewing the assignments and teaching myself. Luckily he gave us a lot of the questions that were on the exam. If you do well on exam, he will make that your final mark which helped me out.
Had him for Orgo I and Drugs 101 in the same semester and hopefully more in the future. He talks really fast so be prepared to take notes quickly, but I prefer this to the slow monotone voice. He's hilarious and conveys subjects effectively. Tests are fair. He even helps you with materials in the lab even though he is not the lab coordinator.
My absolute favourite prof at uOttawa. He explains concepts clearly in-class and is genuinely funny. He gives TONS of practice questions (a dream for chem students) with solutions, and his exams are very fair & reflective of emphasized course material. 2nd midterm and final were open-book. Do his practice questions and you'll be golden.
One of the best profs I've had. This class has a ton of optional assignments to practice the techniques, but as long as you're comfortable with those you'll do fine. His expectations are super clear, and the assignments are harder than the midterms/exam. He goes over problems in class and is super casual. Also doesn't expect you to know theory.
love love love this class, medicine for dummies, prof makes the lectures so interesting and material is easy to grasp if you go to class. and if you don't all the slides are on blackboard, would love a drugs 102 class, the exams are extremely fair, he set up the course so that students succeed, would recommend it 100% as an elective!!
Ogil-BAE. Ogilvie was an amazing prof. He is very old school in that he doesn't give any supplementary material-- he gives his lecture and that's that. If you don't go to class, there's no other way to get the notes other than classmates. His midterms are very similar to assignments and old midterms, final is tougher though. 10/10 recommend
This is easily the class i enjoyed the most in my first year of uni. He's a funny guy and covers very interesting topics in his lectures. The materiel he teaches makes you want to show up to class. I cant say enough good things about him and his class. All exams are multiple choice and do not have trick questions. Overall really great guy and class
Such a great elective! Ogilvie is a funny and knowledgeable guy. Just go to class, take notes, and do the short readings he assigns. Pure memorization. It's pretty easy to do well but he sometimes throws some tricky questions at you. Overall, you'll learn some fun facts and probably get an A/A+.
One of the best classes I have ever taken. Ogilvie knows his stuff and teaches in a very effective and easy to understand matter. Lack of notes he posts online makes class a mandatory thing to attend but it also sets you up for success.
Learned so much from this prof, it's great that he actually worked in his field before teaching! Only two midterms and a final! Midterms were way easier than final in my opinion. If you don't go to class you're kinda screwed because there's barely any text on his approx 200slide per topic powerpoints. One of the must do classes at ottawa u
If you ever take Intro to Biopharm. with Ogilvie, don't bother with handwritten notes. Even if you are used to writing notes by hand, you will NEED to use a laptop to be on his pace. He lectures this course super fast and once he goes to the next slide, he's not going back (annoying when he's drawing out an important mechanism on the slide).
Great prof! Lectures are really captivating, funny guy, midterms are easy and very fair (Intro to Biopharm) and just an overall great experience!! Take it if you can! Great science elective choice
Really funny guy, he's such a dad that he would laugh at his own corny jokes. Would give ridiculous chemistry puns in class. Tests were very easy, just practice the past ones, he never changes it. Take his class. ALL OF THEM!
AMAZING prof and great lectures. He posts his power points online but theyre pretty much empty so attendance is important. He explains everything really well and exams are all multiple choice questions! No need to be in a science program to understand and enjoy this class.
Really good professor interesting grading system that sets you up fr sucess, could have better visual aid but overall really good.
Great prof! lectures are so interesting and funny! don't have to have to go to class but why not cz the material is an eye-opener. Fast at responding to e-mails. Grading is totally reasonable. would take him again!
Overall great prof. Overly fair regarding how he grades... just get ready to memorize a ton of information and don't skip lectures. He provides the lecture slides which is great.
Dr. Ogilvie is a great professor, the way he teaches the course is excellent. Given that you're still going to have to do your part and complete every assignments and practice every day as this is still a CHM1321 course, then the hard work will pay off from there.
best prof ive ever had. so funny and interesting, had good content and is such a dad. amazing class, covers lots of information but as long as you listen during class and take good notes you can easily get an A. he really just wants you to enjoy your time in class and always cracks jokes. 10/10 recommend
It was his first time teaching the course but he did an excellent job. The material is really interesting and he also provides personal experience from his time working in pharma. If you take good notes in class and make sure you do every assignment question, you're guaranteed a good mark, especially cause of the sliding scale grading criteria.
Great prof, don't take anyone else. Midterms are made up of the exact questions on his assignments, as well as past midterms. Final was a bit tough but the adjusted weighting and simplicity of the midterms gives you a large buffer. Buying the textbook guarantees you'll do well, even if its not mandatory.
Great lectures and reasonable exams. He gives you so many chances if you mess up. I almost failed my midterms but did well on the final and aced the class. The lab isnt worth much (15%), but it can boost your mark a little. Make sure you study the lab material before writing the final!
About 130 powerpoint slides seen per class. Final is "cumulative". this class is open for about any faculty student but if science is not what you study in, please dont take this class. Also, i dont recommend for french student as he speaks really fast. So glad its over! Prof is really kind and funny though.
Very funny guy and his classes are always fascinating as he picks out very interesting topics. I consider attendance mandatory since the slides he posts online are blank or sometimes have images. A lot of memorization but the grading system is in our favor (will make your best exam count for significantly more). For sure a must take class/prof!
Ogilvie is BY FAR one of my favorite prof's I've had throughout my university career. He makes lecture very interesting and knows what he's talking about and he's also really funny. He tells you exactly what to expect on midterms and exams and the tests are never too hard as long as you study. If you're taking drugs101 or biopharm TAKE IT WITH HIM!
Probably the best prof and course you will every have. If you are looking for an easy A, useful course, funny prof and less work, take his course! Midterms and finals are fairly easy and relevant to the material. He knows what he is talking about and the topics are really interesting but many slides that could be shorter. Attendance isn't mandatory
ogilvie is the man. no textbook, slides are pretty vague so go to class and take good notes. he's super funny & very approachable, made lectures interesting and easy to understand even for people without much science background. would absolutely take him again & recommend bps1101 to literally anyone looking for a fun elective
Really good prof, but he talks really fast so if you miss what he said, you gotta find a friend who did cus he doesn't post his notes on Brightspace. Exams are always very fair. Interesting material, but this is NOT an easy baby class. Take BPS1101 if you want an easy course.
He's a really great professor but he's a bit too fast. its hard to keep up with his pace and type down everything at the same time. The course is pretty interesting but it is difficult. Ogilvie tries his best to make the lectures more alive by adding facts and stories, cracks a few jokes often. Overall, if you study, midterms are not that difficul
Bill is the MAN. Take this class if you wanna watch your professor eat chalk.
He's my definition of a standard prof. Nice, approachable and hilarious. The course itself is heavy and has a lot of material so yes, you will cram alot. Class is boring so dont bother going for class. JUST PRACTICE ALL HIS ASSIGNMENTS. On God all his questions were assg questions. I did ONLY the assignment questions for final and it was a breeze.
His questions for final were ALL from the midterms or assignments. I have no idea who's the person who gave him that awful review once you scroll down but they clearly didn't bother to understand anything. Content is heavy but is interesting especially cuz he tells relevant stories and is funny. Man's a saint and I wish he was my father.
Class begins Sept5. It's normal Ogilvie. I do notice his teaching is kinda wack this time, but whatevs ill be good. First midterm is fine. Second midterm material is a bit trickier but still ok. Stuff to learn for final is tough but I expect my boy Ogilvie to toss me the 9 or 10 regardless. I was wrong. Man snapped on that 60% final. AVOID Spec!
Fantastic guy and his teaching style is fine, but BPS2110 was heavy, and he talked way too fast. Exams were all assignment questions but I did not enjoy the pace he was going and the amount of information we needed to know.
Lectures are very long, he's somewhat monotone and speaks quickly, but the content is interesting. DO ALL THE ASSIGNMENTS. That's where he gets all his questions. The final was literally copy paste assignment questions. If you miss a class or 2, that's ok, but try not to cuz you will be lost. You need to understand the material for it to stick.
Most Amazing Prof that uOttawa has to offer. Words cannot expression how wonderful this man is. He goes over a lot during lectures but throws in a few jokes here and there to make the material less dry. He knows his material very wells, and points out keys things that you need to know for the exams. Couldn't ask for a better professor.
Seems like a nice person during lectures but short with me during office hours. Blazes through material so quickly only some students understand during class but I was almost never able to follow his train of thought. Midterm material is fair, mostly problem solving and very little theory. You can pass even if you only finish part of the questions.
took drugs101 with him and expected biopharm to be easy, but boy was i mistaken. LOTS of material, so make sure you start studying early. midterms are similar to past ones, so find a friend who took it last year. final exam was 90% questions from the assignments, so make sure to memorize the shet out of them. still, my boi ogilvie is a great prof
Ogilvie is the GOAT. convinced he's among the best in the entire institution. content is very easy, and I'm in the social sciences and know absolutely nothing about science. just thought this class would be fun and interesting, which it is. just please, for the love of God do not skip his class, that's where you could mess up and ruin your grade.
I'd say he's pretty overated and mediocre as a science prof at best. Class notes are just his messy writing on his iPad/smart board so when you're going back to study, you can't even understand your notes because you're spending half the time trying to decipher his messy writing. How do you expect us to practice when we can't understand the basics?
Good guy, good classes. Other than the midterm being delayed, been enjoying the classes. Just make sure you attend all the classes, or else your grades will suffer. Also, it's super lecture heavy so be ready to take notes.
He is very nice and interesting.
Lectures are content heavy and only goes through the basics; MUST do assignments to self teach yourself the material to meet the difficulty level of the exam. Exams are not very easy. Redo the assignments multiple times to fully prepare for tests. Self-teaching is necessary to pass. Graded on only 2 midterms, lab of 15% weight, and final exam.
I enjoyed Ogilvie's lectures; they were easy to follow, and he's hilarious. The people who complain about his midterms aren't putting in the work. He specifically tells us that if we do the assignments, we'll find the midterms very easy, and it's true! He's an amazing prof but don't expect to do well in orgo with any prof if you don't want to try.
Legit my fav prof! Super easy to pass the class, u do have to study a decent amount tho (thought id wouldn't have to but wtv). Super interesting material too! DO ATTEND CLASS THO AND WRITE EVERYTHING HE SAYS! A lot of what he says in class is in the exams! The last exam is cumulative just btw but I HIGHLY recommend
Oglivie writes his notes on a whiteboard using the projector and his handwriting is messy and difficult to follow. His midterms and exam are difficult and these are the only things you're graded on, on top of the 15% labs. I do not recommend.
Ogilvie made orgo lectures enjoyable. Hes a funny guy and knows what hes talking about. Do the assignments multiple times to prepare for his midterms and put in the work to do well. Final was very hard compared to the rest of the course so prepare yourself well in advance for it.
Dr. Ogilvie is an amazing professor. His lectures are clear, and decently easy to follow for a jam-packed orgo curriculum. Do his assignments over and over as a lot of the exams have similar molecules. You can't miss a lecture cause he doesn't post his notes. He hints in great detail at exam questions. Very friendly and calm when you ask for help!
First off, he is not a bad prof. Rather, my expectations from him were high considering he won prof of the year in 2017. Many who took him in the past have said that he's a tosser when it comes to giving marks, but this year he changed completely. Forget an arrow on a 12 arrow mechanism, you'll get at most 1/6 even after submitting for remarks...
Amazing class & amazing professor. Drugs 101 is an undergrad class you leave with so much applicable information to your daily life. Lectures are very heavy but as long as you go, take notes, really study, you will do well. Ogilvie is a must-take during an undergrad.
Prof is good. Class isn't super easy. Lotsssss of information and lecture slides
Such a good professor that makes a class with a heavy course load quite simple. Listen and pay attention to the lectures and the midterms and exam won't be too difficult.... Also listen because the content is so interesting and useful.
I came into Dr. Ogilvie's class with much excitement as I heard that Dr. Ogilvie is THE Prof. I'm not sure if he changed this year or not, but his grading scheme does not seem fair. He does not give you partial marks. He takes off marks per mistake. So a question with many parts to it out of 3 means 3 mistakes on the question will earn you a zero.
Had him for orgo 1 and bps1101, not a bad prof. BPS1101 is alright, lots of memorization but his exams aren't bad.
I've had Ogilvie for CHM1321, BPS1101, and BPS2110. He has many pros and cons, but I feel that the pros outweigh cons. Pros: funny and teaches course in interesting matter, exams are FAIR or EASY (don't listen to anyone who says otherwise). Cons: messy handwriting & stinge when it comes to remarking. He's def one of the better sci profs at this uni
Showing up to this class is essential cause he slides wont make sense otherwise. He is a great teacher and is really good at simplifying complex topics. He really cares. This course is especially easy and helpful if youre in health sciences or nursing cause it reviews a lot of the concepts learned in other classes but in simpler ways.
Great guy, if you want in depth explanations rather than superficial patters spoken about in class, highly recommend going to see him
Tests are very fair. His explanations are not always the best, but if you go to his office he tries his best to help
Really awesome prof, his midterms were fair but the final was random and hard. Retaking the class with a different prof this time.
William Ogilvie is a respected prof throughout uOttawa because he is such a charismatic guy. To all my fellow students looking to take Drugs 101 as an easy elective; although the class material is very interesting and an A+ is definitely achievable, know that it is a LOT of work. 100+ slides per topic and lots of notes. Go to class, study everythin
Bby, it's crunch time with this guy. He's nice and cracks a couple jokes but he is a difficult prof not going to lie. You MUST be at lectures or you'll miss the notes (he does NOT post them) which you have to hand write btw. It was the hardest course I've taken, just make sure you look at the corrected assignments for exam prep.
He's a great prof and teaches really well. His first exam screwed me so hard it was so much harder than expected and I failed but I asked for a regrading in which he added 10% and made me pass. He's quick to answer any question you have and give you more info on anything
Ogilvie is a really great professor. I had him for orgo 1 and bps2110 and he was a great lecturer for both. The classes he teaches tend to be very heavy in terms of information. His lectures and notes are incredibly thorough and as long as you attend class and make notes youll definitely do okay in the class. Amazing prof I loved him.
Ogilvie is by far the best prof I've had at this university so far. He inspired me to keep pursuing a career in pharmaceuticals. I highly recommend this prof for any science student. Courses have a lot of information, but he finds a way to break things down and explain it perfectly. A lot of memorization , but exams are very easy if you study.
Dr. Ogilvie was the best professor I have ever had at university. I loved all his courses he taught, especially biopharm. Tests are fair if you study. I would highly recommend this course to any science student - it was by far the most interesting class I've taken.
I had Ogilvie for biopharm and while class is usually boring, his midterms and final were very fair. The midterms were all assignment questions and the final was also assignment questions as well as repeated midterm questions. So memorize the assignments and you'll be good to go.
The class was suppose to be easy but he made it super difficult. Doesn't do examples in class only go over theory which weren't even on the midterm or final. He's such a disappointment for third year. Everything was so unfair, he only grades by a few things mt + exam no bonus, no bell curve. Stay away from this guy
Ogilvie is an experienced and competent prof. I found he spoke a little too quickly sometimes but he had 2 office hours and is happy to explain things. His assignments are super helpful, if you just study those and past midterms you'll get an A. No lab and no textbook, which is a plus. Don't fall behind tho or else it's hard to catch up.
Go to class. The lectures seem harder if you try to do them alone. He speaks fast, but he will repeat if asked. He gives a TON of problem sets DO EVERY SINGLE ONE. Exam questions are like the problem sets. This class is all about problem solving. Easy midterms, final was hard but he gives a lot of partial points. Second midterm and final open book.
His lectures are very engaging, but make sure to go to class because the slides are harder to understand without his lectures. There is no textbook use either. A lot of students opt to choose this as a mark booster and it is genuinely interesting too.
great prof. would take again
Great prof, one of my favorites for sure! Highly recommend. Lectures are heavy but not difficult to understand. Explains very well. Super funny too!
I took this class as an elective and I found it really interesting. There is a lot of material, but it's pretty easy to study if you go to class. He does talk pretty fast in his lectures so it's important to really pay attention. Both midterms were very fair. There only a few questions that I felt unsure about. Great professor overall.
This course is very fun BUT NOT EASY. I personally found anatomy easier because drugs101 is more like a trivia with so many random facts. He goes very specific with some of his questions. It's easy to get an A but not an A+. However, this was the most interesting course I've taken so I do recommend this if you don't need the 10.
Dr. Ogilvie is such a great prof, he breaks down concepts into simple ideas and you don't need any prior science knowledge to get a good grade in his class. It's very important to go to class since he adds more information to his slides. His midterms and final are multiple-choice and he's a very fair prof! This is my favourite class of 1st year!
Awesome prof! Make sure you do the practice assignments he provides as homework because his exams are the exact same content. If you nail the assignments and practice exams, you will be set for the real exam. You can also use the textbook for extra practice which I recommend. Thankfully, don't need to study like a week in advance for midterms!
Great prof, brilliant explanations, very concise. He draws everything out using a tablet, and is very matter of fact. Exams are similar to assignments, not doing them is GPA suicide. If you get confused, get a textbook, not his necessarily but find one with a solutions manual. Organic is hard, but he makes it bearable.
Honestly, the bad mark was on me. Didn't study enough because I was interested in other courses more. He doesn't post slides so you have to go to class to make notes. He is very smart so he explains things too complicated sometimes. He is good at office hours though! Nice guy.. but sometimes I just need profs to make it simple for me to get it.
Read all the good reviews and figured I would give him a shot but boy was I wrong. He was incredibly rude when I asked for help and claimed that I wasnt in highschool anymore, my friend who was white asked for help literally right after me and he helped her with no hesitation. Only good if you wanna take the course but not talk to him.
The class was pretty easy but hell to go to. This prof is super racist
3 letters describe him: BAD. he is one of the worst profs that I've ever had! try to be respectful? don't even bother. he is extremely rude and racist. I wish I could do something about it...
I had him in Orgo 1 and made an assumption that he wasn't the best but he seriously gives you all the tools and knowledge you need to get an A+. I got a 97 on the first midterm by learning online where he gave fair exams and quizzes. If you are doing bad its not because of him, its simply because you haven't figured out how uni works yet !!
He is great at teaching and his midterms were fair but boy did he screw us for the final! The class changed to distant learning once covid hit. He was super rude when I sent him emails. I think he has an attitude problem. I think he needs to chill with the attitude. Students are already stressed and he made it worse with his sass.
-good at giving clear explanations and breaking concepts down into really simple terms -he speaks really fast so I had to pause the lecture recordings a lot -with online learning he went way over the allotted lecture time which was really stressful -the midterms were not at all a reflection of what he focused on most on in class
I want to admit that I have been biased towards him since last year. I nearly failed 2 of his midterms -which is my fault- because I realized all I had to do was do the assignments. The assignments are basically made up of what his exams will have. This is not an easy course at all so you have to study but do the assignments. So yeah, assignments..
He is just a chill guy that does not have any live lecture since he posted all the contents and assignments on Brightspace. So if you dont have any chance to watch all the lecs, DO ALL THE ASSIGNMENTS as he picked lots of questions on assignments on MIDTERMS and FINAL.
Such an amazing professor! He is super funny and is very good at making difficult concepts easy to understand. Definitely recommend it to anybody who is looking for a fun easy science course.
Olgavie's a real gem and his drugs classes are very interesting. He's great at teaching and explaining concepts; his lectures are like listening to a story. slides are only pcitures but it's pretty easy to take notes in class and his notes are on studocu. exams were straightforward and many of the questions were repeated so find his old tests.
Very disrespectful and doesnt care about students, super passive aggressive. Would not recommend
Horrible prof, very rude
Hated him in the start but honestly he grows on you took BPS 2110 and BPS 1101 honestly really good at teaching. You basically do not have to go to his office hours his lectures are good on their own. He breaks things down like he is to explaining to kids
BPS 2110 with Dr. Ogilvie is pretty good course. It is not easy, you have to memorize a lot but if you go to his class or watch the prerecorded videos... take good notes and memorize everything you can get an easy A but you have to memorize a lot! The prof is caring and he is accessible outise the class.
This course is a pretty hard one. Two midterms were fine and I got A+ in both. The final was super hard and long so I would say save your energy for the final. The prof is amazing and very carrying but the course is very heavy especially when it comes to the final exam where it is cumulative.
Maybe not the best online lecturer, but his tests are straightforward, and the textbook he wrote is amazing. Provides past tests, which are very helpful. Seems to really know his stuff! I would recommend him.
Drugs was really interesting - I learnt a lot. No textbook readings which saved me a lot of time. Some of the exam questions I felt were not super fair, but such is life. He's also pretty funny and he gives everyone an extra 1% so that you leave him alone in terms of re-marking (good strategy)
Professor Ogilvie was an amazing professor for organic chemistry. He offered a lot of bonus marks that made my grade go above a 100% even with my bad lab marks.
Very knowledgeable and easy going, chill dude 100% would take a course w him again
Amazing professor. Lots of bonus marks I have received over 100% on both midterms by doing the provided assignments and going to his office hours which he is EXTREMELY helpful during. He is super kind and caring. Great professor.
Drugs 101 is probably the best course I have ever taken. Makes it very interesting and fun to learn. I didn't have him for CHM1321 and I regret not switching to his class but I did have the textbook that he wrote, which is an amazing book for studying organic chemistry. I will definitely be looking to take more courses with Ogilvie.
I have now had Dr. Ogilivie for 2 classes and intend to take any class he offers because he is one of the best profs I have ever had. He conveys the topics he is teaching extremely effectively by providing good examples and simple explanations. His midterms are similar to practice ones and if you do all the assignments he provides you'll be golden.
Professor Ogilvie is HILARIOUS. Great teacher and easy exams so highly recommend.
This class was very interesting but get ready for A LOT of memorization if you want a good grade. If all you want is a decent grade, watch the lectures and take complete notes and you should be fine. This is not an easy A but it's pretty close if you have a good memory and don't underestimate the difficulty.
This is a course everyone should have to take in highschool. It's full of really useful information that applies to everyone. He's a really nice and interesting guy who has the inside scoop on the drug industry and gave me a whole new perspective on it. Just make sure you pay attention. Not sure if it's covid, but there are some tricky questions.
This class was hands down the worst class I ever took. If someone ever told you take bps cuz its an easy credit DONT theyre lying. The class is very loaded and, the prof doesnt care if you can handle it or not. For your own mental well being dont do it. Unless of course you want some challenges or is a mandatory class. Good luck!!
The best elective you could ever possibly take. I've learned more in this class, than any class I've taken all year. Highly, highly recommend.
Apparently the fall 2019 classes for BPS1101 had HALF the material/lectures to study from midterms and exams. The online fall 2020 classes were open book and not proctored. Winter 2021, we have double the normal material and were expected to learn it all by heart. Do NOT take this class if you dont need to.
Im shocked at how much I enjoyed this class. A new worldview on how much science and drugs have impacted us. Definitely worth it for the well explained lectures. Dont know what he looks like, but he has a great lecture voice at 2x speed. Lots of memorization, think again if youre not strong at that. Solid choice and course! Recommended!!
If you can take orgo 1 with Dr. Ogilvie, DO ITTTTT!!! You just have to know his assignments inside out and you will be more than fine for his assessments. He can be a bit dry during lectures but tbh that does not really matter. He is very helpful during office hours and replies so fast to emails!! A gem
Orgo is tough for me. Its just really not my thing. But Ogilvie was amazing. I think I sent him 30 emails this semester (sorry prof if you're reading this haha) and he answered every one. He always held office hours and his lectures were easy to follow and clear. I ending up having a great time learning orgo! All in all, one of my favourite profs.
Content heavy, but also one of the most brilliant classes I've ever taken, and I would HIGHLY recommend it. It's engaging, teaches about everything you need to know about sciences and drugs in daily life- he even added COVID-19 to the curricula. For those in science, it's still great because you get to make a lot of connections to your degree.
Great prof! Lectures are well organized and his assignments and practice tests strongly reflect the midterms/exams. He's very generous with bonus marks. His office hours are helpful as he goes through assignment questions.
Pretty typical bird course recommended - learned quite applicable knowledge from this class. His emphasis on debunking myths is well appreciated. A fun class whether you are a science or non-science student.
This is the best prof I've ever had!!!! He's a really amazing speaker :)
Such a great professor. His prerecorded lectures are extremely helpful. Always available if you have questions. His sample exams are very good for preparing for midterm exams but his final exam was brutal.
Dr. Ogilvie was a great professor. He covered the content in a clear concise manner that was easy to follow and understand. He gives weekly ungraded homework that is almost identical to the midterms and final. As long as you practice and understand the homework you'll get an easy A.
He changed how much our exam was worth after we wrote it, making all our grades much lower for the midterm. Completely unfair move by him.
Prof ogilvie is a very decent person.
Professor Ogilvie is an amazing lecturer. This is probably my favourite class Ive taken in my entire undergrad so far. His midterms and finals are not easy, but theyre very doable. Lots of memorization is required, and this is definitely not a bird course. However, you wont regret taking this class with him it is so interesting.
now my third time having professor ogilvie. he is truly an amazing teacher and great instructor, but he is horribly rude and condescending via email. this could be because he has so many students he needs a degree of separation, but he can be very frustrating to deal with should you have any concerns. he teaches well and his tests are very fair
I had prof. Ogilvie for organic chemistry and didn't love him (probably more related to the class itself) but loved him for drugs 101. The class is super interesting and is actually pretty useful for everyday/common knowledge. The midterms and exam are memorization heavy but closely follow the lectures, so just take good notes and you'll be fine!
Make sure that you do all the optional homework because it's very similar to the midterms! Lectures are really good but exams require a lot of preparation.
A very good professor who explains all the topics very clearly. Gives out practice assignments/midterms which are similar to actual midterms. Midterms/Exams are tough but mainly just because there's a lot to know with organic chemistry.
This professor gives out good practice problems and assignments that will make you understand the content well. He is organized and tends to email you back within a day or two. However, the class itself is very content heavy so keep up with the lectures and practice a lot for the midterms and finals! GL!
Solid choice of a prof. He's an excellent lecturer, and his exams are fair. He doesn't know how to pronounce dementia and garlic though
If you don't have a basis in science, good luck. 3 tests that make up your grade total, and grading criteria is slightly hard to understand, not to mention he doesn't tell you what is going to be on the tests. Asynchronous and was hard to get a hold of extra help if needed, and videos felt impersonal and a lazy approach. Overall, never again.
Dr Ogilvie provides a lot of practise assignments and questions which really help prepare for midterms and the final! He is a good prof and does a good job explaining the content. Very content heavy course so make sure to keep up with lectures and the content. I would definitely recommend taking this course with him!
Very straightforward in his lectures and had a dry sense of humour. The grading system was awesome. The class content was really cool. Exams were multiple choice and pretty fair. A solid prof.
Graded by 2 midterms and 1 final. Exams were all multiple choice and weighted to give you the highest overall mark. Dr. Ogilvie also gave us a 1% bonus. Lectures were content-heavy but very informative. If you take good notes and pay attention, you're sure to do well!
Prof. Ogilive makes a no-surprises course with organic chemistry. His non-graded assignments are very close to the format and difficulty of questions on the midterms and exams. He doesn't make lecture slides, so you need to take your own notes, and I found that the topics in each individual lecture could be a bit disorganized.
He's a pretty strict prof especially with proctoring. This rating reflects he tests like the average prof, but he is a good teacher. I didn't find his practice matches his midterms, you more just need to know the concept. I'm really sad what everyone made him out to be cause he's not that.
If you can, take a class with him. He has a dozen ungraded assignments that are similar to the midterms and final. He doesn't have any lecture slides so be prepared to take notes. As long as you understand his assignments inside out, you should be able to good in this class.
He's an amazing prof! 2 midterm and final. You have to take notes since his slides only has a few things on it. Explains concept very well. Exams are pretty straight forward and easy to understand. No trick questions. I learned a lot from this class. Highly recommend this prof and this class!
Class has 2 midterms and a final. The weight of the marks can change depending on how well you do. My only issue with this class is that he doesn't let us see how we did on our midterms. I didn't like how he reused videos from 2 years ago. He is not bad. He is avalible outside of class for questions. Quickly responds to emails.
I took BPS 1101 knowing that it was considered a bird course - absolutely did not disappoint. Would recommend taking this course no matter your faculty. Prof. Ogilvie is a gem and the content is so interesting and useful. My favourite first year class by far!
He should be speak slower and more clear.
I hear professor Ogilvie is better in person, but I had him asynchronously. His async lectures are easy to follow along and he provides good online office hours for you to ask all your questions. My advice, don't do his "graded optional assignments," they are way more difficult than his exams and take forever to do. Use that time studying instead.
His lectures were great and not too bad considering the amount of content you have to learn in this course. Midterms were easy and straightforward. No trick questions. Only thing is is that he is not too responsive to his emails so if you have any questions, you have better luck just asking a classmate or just looking it up.
No need to describe much. Whoever has him knows he is one of the best professor out there
you know he's a great teacher when its the last week of classes and everyone is still showing up. we applauded him after the last class lmao. amazingly clear and best prof i've had in my 4 years of uni. he explains hard fancy concepts in science in a way that any interested student should be able to understand. no curveballs on his exams.
Best prof ever. Just wrote the final today and it reflected exactly what was taught in the lectures. He is so good at explaining concepts, he makes this course feel easy plus he is super funny. The course itself is a lot of material, but if you go to class, follow what he's saying and study of course you should do fine.
This man just does not disappoint. Had him for orgo 1, intro to drugs, and most recently spectroscopy. Just go to class, take good notes, and do each "optional" assignment preferably twice over or more (I put optional in quotations cuz if you want to do well you better do the assignments). No surprises on his exams at all.
I WANT OGILVIE TO TEACH EVERY COURSE OF MY UNDERGRAD!! His exams have 0 surprises whatsoever. The most honest prof I have ever had in University. He is great at explaining things. Lectures are not recorded but this forces you to go to class anyway (which you should be doing). Engaging prof.
Love this man to death. The absolute best professor at the university. Genuinely an amazing lecturer, and his tests were super fair and easy if you studied. Can't talk highly enough about him.
very fair and nice. some questions are hard but he prepares you well
Ogilvie is one of the most solid science professors out there. Abundant practice material, clear lectures and explanations, funny guy. Would take again.
I seriously wish he could teach all my science classes. He makes already interesting content even more cool with how he explains everything. All multiple choice exams, and no trick questions. If you study, you'll do well!
Amazing professor with cool shoes. Really knows his stuff and has a great teaching style (traditional with him talking with slides in the background). Midterms + final clearly depict what was learned in class and memorization goes a long way.
Lecture HEAVY!! But interesting content, easy MC exams with no trick questions. He clearly wants you to succeed and he's really funny. He's extremely knowledgable and is very open to discussion. Overall, it was a fun and interesting class.
Had him online winter 2022. Recorded lecs only so u had to stay on track. Does not provide ppt so take ur own notes. Clear lectures, 2 MTs were similar to previous MTs and the practice assignments he gives. TopHat was $100 and a waste of money tho. Do your practice, stay on top, and you'll be fine!
Super interesting class! It's helpful to do the practice questions he posts as well as find any previous years' midterms. Content heavy and fast-paced but he explains things well. His slides are very simple tho so you gotta take ur own notes.
Amazing prof! Interesting content, 2 MTs and a final, all MC, very reasonable questions. Content heavy and fast-paced but just study and you'll be fine.
He's a legend for a reason. The lectures are entertaining, my friend and I would make popcorn and watch them like a movie! He teaches the class like a cool story with great continuity throughout the term. Exams are all MCQ that are simple but a lot of the options are similar, so actually do study. Take you own notes & make flashcards! Love him :)
He slays. Best prof ever. Took every course he taught and this was one of them. He reuses some MC questions form the questions he gives and there are a lot of materials only that can help prepare for exams. he does not try and trick you. go to class and you will easily get an A+.
He's an amazing prof, nonetheless he's still an orgo chem teacher so do not underestimate how difficult the class can become while the term progresses. If you pay attention and attend every lecture, you're gonna do good. Also, do the homeworks, exams are based on the homeworks and are an amazing practice.
definitely a hard class. the first half is easy but the latter half is harder due to the mechanisms and reactions. but he is very fair
Great lectures, content is pretty interesting, and the exams are all easy multiple choice questions as long as you study. Definitely recommend
Great prof, great class. He has a great sense of humour and is approachable. Note that it's not 100% bird course. You need to study a fair bit to succeed, but the content isn't conceptually difficult. Put in the time, and you're set for a great mark!
Great professor. Super knowledgeable in his field. Tailors your grades so you have the best possible final grade.
Loved Dr. Ogilvie, however I feel like he was way too hyped up on here. Attend classes, because this man does not believe in PowerPoints or recording his lectures! Practice, practice, practice and you'll do fine, not necessarily a hard class unless you make it one.
Dr. Ogilvie is awesome, so funny. The class itself is super interesting, I enjoyed attending. If you wanna do well, you have to go to class; lectures are not recorded and the slides are pretty much just pictures. The class wasn't AS easy as people say, but he's very flexible with grade adjustments, so you should do well.
Great prof, great class. Nothing but good things to say, loved every moment of his lectures.
He does not post any slides or lectures. He writes everything on the spot, so write down everything he shows on the projector. He is very fair and explains things very well, but I'd still recommend doing the reading anyway. Make sure to go to DGDs because they can help with the homework.
Dr. Ogilivie is one of the best professors at uOttawa, he made organic chemistry easy to understand by breaking down complex concepts. However, you must attend all of his lectures because he does not post any of his notes. His midterm and final exams are heavily based on the practice assignments and past papers he posts, so DO THE ASSIGNMENTS!!
We love him. His exams are hard but his lectures are so interesting. I would not say it's a bird course, but take it if you enjoy science.
this man ate chalk
Professor Ogilvie excels in delivering captivating lectures and providing clear explanations. Although the midterms and exams are challenging, I highly recommend his classes!
Prof Ogilvie is a great prof, he is very funny and makes class very interesting. You do have to be sure to go to class because his lecture slides give little explanation and he doesn't post announcements. But the class is well worth it to go to and he is very funny.
Great person and very funny but does not seem to care too much about his students or their success. Lectures are very heavy and there is a lot of content so it is hard to know what to focus on. Best bet in doing well in this class is looking at past exams, they are pretty much the same. I would not take this class for fun, it is not a bird course.
He's a great lecturer and makes the class very interesting - lectures are heavy though and sooo much content is covered. Study the assignment answers and past exams, no need to waste time going through slides/notes which can be quite overwhelming. Every question on both midterms and the final was reused from a past one.
This prof absolutely does not care about students. Tough grader. Never will ever give partial marks. He wants you basically to rewrite the same exact words from the answer key or else forget about partial marks from him. Reviewing midterms with him is absolutely meaningless
The rating speaks for itself. (Great prof btw)
This guy may perhaps be the best professor at the university. Amazing lecturer, the class has a ton of material but he packs his lectures with all the answers you need for the multiple choice midterms and finals. Show up, pay attention, and take notes, the class is a breeze. If you're reading this, you're a G.
Great guy, great class, absolutely hilarious. Show up and take notes you'll be good. WE LOVE YOU DR. OGILVIE
I'm biased because I love chem in general but Dr. Ogilvie was such an awesome professor. He's so nice and all of his midterms are JUST like the practice midterms and assignments. He does his lectures on his ipad and doesn't upload them so attending class is important, but he explains stuff really well and is super helpful.
2 midterms and a final, which he adjusts to give you best possible weight. Beyond that, just a beauty. Really informative class.
Absolutely amazing. The best prof I've ever had. I think he's retiring and if that's true YOU WILL BE MISSED Ogilvie is the goat!!!
BEWARE OF HIM!!!!!! He never puts his lectures on Brightspace, which makes it hard to revise if you miss a part while writing in class, he's also quick and hard to grader, he won't give you half points even if the overall answer is correct. His office hours were not useful, in general expect a lot of studying in general.
Orgo is definitely a very difficult class and you should be ready to study quite a bit to do well. Ogilvie outlines exactly what he's looking for in the exams and sometimes will completely reuse exams from other years. His in-class notes are really important so you should go to every single class if you can. Amazing teacher.
He has good humour. Good prof overall and would def take him again.
Ogilvie is an amazing prof and a great lecturer. He makes lectures interesting and just has a great personality overall. If you ever get the chance to take one of his classes do it!!!
He makes an otherwise dry subject interesting. All his tests are multiple choices. It's a memorization heavy course, but that's it. No equations or principles to learn, just remember what is on the slides (and write down what he explains out-loud in class on the slides too). It's very easy to pass, so don't worry too much.
His powerpoints are heavy with content, but the tests are on a few important things. So the best way to succeed is to do the assignments (which are essentially practice questions) and practice past exams (because he almost copy-pastes his old exams in current exams, with few modifications). Don't waste time memorizing everything, it's not BPS 1101.
Lecture content is simple, doesn't get too technical nor expect you to memorize chemical structures. Very easy for science (BIM, BCH, BPS) students (doesn't count as a science elective!). He answers questions in class. Tests (2 midterms and a final) are all multiple choice. Some questions are on very specific details he only said verbally.
Professor Ogilvie is a wonderful professor who presents material in a clear and fun way. As long as you attend lectures and take thorough notes, this class will be a breeze and you'll learn things that can be applied in your daily life.
never cracked jokes like everyone claims, put material on final he promised wouldn't be on it (and it was worth a quarter of the final!). doesn't record lectures, or post notes. Ur pretty much done for if you miss a class. Found teaching unorganized, no clear start/stop in material from one lecture to the next. many mistakes in grading, avoid !
Very nice and funny guy. The course was heavy so you gotta do the assignments. He doesn't post notes so note taking during lectures can sometimes be stressful but he explains topics very well. The exams were basically identical to assignment questions and previous exams, but to me the final was much more harder than either midterm.
Professor Ogilvie makes this course engaging and straightforward. Attend lectures, take notes, and you'll do well. Unstuckstudy ai was a huge help for study prep too.
Ogilvie is an amazing lecturer but his exams are unfair for a first time Orgo student. He does not post any slides or notes just practice questions and answers. If you do not go to class, you will not understand the content. His exams have a lot of 'thinking' questions so unless you THOROUGHLY study everything he gives, you will not do well.
He's great!
He likes using questions from past midterms so if you study those you will be fine!
