Professor Pachas was a ok professor not the best not the worst. he made alot of mistakes which through you off a bit. you must do homework online, i ended up getting a B because i would study if you dont study the test's will throw you off goodluck
I really enjoyed his class last fall.
Great Professor, it was my first semester and it was easy. I recommend him. Do homework everyday, that's the only reason I got a B, because I didn't do it. No need to purchase the book, and save by purchasing the online access code.
He is a breath of fresh air compared to the other professors I've had at SMC. He provides extra credit opportunities on the exams, but he does not drop your lowest exam score. I thought he graded the exams fairly. Do the homework and practice study guide questions, and you will pass. I recommend him!
read off notes from this notebook, it made it look like he did not understand math. he was semi funny. strict. somewhat helpful. no need for book just access code. only recommend if you are good at math and can learn on your own.
Just do the homework and class activities and you'll be fine. This class was fun.
Lectures are very straightforward. Will give you packets so you know what is exactly on the test. Always willing to answer questions. Won't try to trick you But is very strict. Do not get caught on your phone or talking, or he will ask you to leave. Be careful about your absences as well because he will drop you if you miss too many classes.
He's okay but he makes his lectures more complicated than what it is. He needs to come to class more prepared and organized. He also gives a short break. His tests are not that difficult as long as you have complete notes and you show up during review for exams.
I took this class to give him a shot since there weren't many reviews on him for math 7....I REGRET IT SO MUCH. He makes his class seem easy the first couple of days. Then it gets tough and his tests are harder than anything he explains! He is A TOUGH GRADER. Doesn't cut any slack. DO NOT BE ON YOUR PHONE. He will humiliate you.
The lectures were unclear , he made quite a lot of mistakes when writing down the notes and it was slightly confusing . Lots of homework online , he also expects you to write down the method you used when answering a question , you can't simply write the answer and it is quite time consuming. Dropped the class.
I took this class thinking the teacher would be good and would be there for the students when they needed help, he laughs at students never helps them, he's a horrible grader test are tough, he thinks he's better than everyone else.
He's a great professor who loves to teach and is willing to help students. Calculus isn't easy, so don't expect his class (or any upper math level class) to be easy. However, he gives clear notes and lectures. Homework counts as part of your grade as well as participation. Attend class, do hw, and study and an A is possible. I Highly recommend him.
Not an easy A. But if you do the homework, the projects, and you work on the handouts by following the steps shown in class, you should be fine. I learned a lot from this class. My friend was taking stats with someone else, but he didn't know half of what I did.
I liked the pace of the class and group work. He made sure we actually get it during the group work activities.
He is the best,I absolutely will take his class in future!
Honestly this is not an easy class but the professor is willing to help. He always likes to throw in jokes in the class and gives a 10 min break every class. Be prepared to do the homework as it is 10% of your final grade.
Pachas is the best Math teacher I have had so far, and I am not exaggerating. His class structure is extremely organized and if you take notes, and do the study guides he makes himself for you, you will get an easy A, and not just that, but actually understand Algebra. Just do NOT use your phone during class, or he WILL catch you, and kick you out.
He's a great Professor who really teaches you during his lectures, as such he gets very frustrated (ultimately very tongue and cheek) when people use phones and whatnot in class. I had a great time and I hope to see him in Math 2
No cellphone use in class. Must ask for permission for bathroom use. Use your cell in class and he will kick you out and drop you. Homework isn't too bad. I didn't buy the book and just went to the library. Great professor. He is very helpful and good at explaining things. 3 (or 4) tests and a final. Take home quiz. Handouts. Do your work, get an A
First week is the toughest, No cell phones you'll get kicked out, Only water allowed, NO at will BATHROOM BREAKS, gives a 10 min break. SOLID PROFESSOR can be a bit confusing a times but the last half of the semester you get used to the spastic lectures. VERY WELL DETAILED IN CONCEPTS and make sure the entire class understands. NO pop quizzes.
Dr. Pachas-Flores is the best. Go to office hours, do your homework, take good notes, you will get a good grade.
Dont take him unless you have a strong math background. I did not like the way he would grade the tests. He would deduct lots of points if your answer is wrong regardless if your procedures were right. He would humiliate you if you on your phone. Tests are harder than expected. Do your HW and review notes and youll be able to pass the class
He comes off very tough in the beginning to deter students who are not prepared/ determined to take the course. Math is never easy, but he has amazing and very creative notes. He is a younger professor and brings enthusiasm with him. Highly recommend office hours. Study hard, do hw, go to OHs, ask q's, and you will be ok.
Although he can be a bit confusing at times, and can be a bit arrogant when you push his buttons, hes a great professor who honestly does his job and helps students as much as he can. He gives study guides for all tests, replaces lowest test score with your score on the final. 4 tests, final, lowest score replaced with final score, online hw, etc
If you actually take the class seriously and want to learn, Professor Pachas-Flores will really help you achieve your goals. Office hours will guarantee you a good grade. Pay attention in class and be focused and he will do his part to help you succeed. Would definitely recommend taking his class.
He's a great teacher. His lectures are very easy to understand because he gives you a handout that we keep and write on. He's willing to answer any questions you have in or outside of class. Do not push his buttons, you'll be fine. Everything he puts on the study guide is exactly the same on the test. No textbook use, online hw though. $$$$$
GREAT CLASS, took him prior to going to UCLA in 2014!
writing 1st review for his diff eqs class. He gives handouts for almost every section. Good, but can get cluttered. Skips a lot of steps in lecture to save time. Exams are usually even problems from the book or handout problems. Final was ridiculous, too long. lots of memorizing formulae in this class. last 2 wks of summer class were crazy. beware
Great Class . Highly recommended!
He really prepares for his class, and he is very organized. His handouts allowed us to save time and learn from class instead of copying from the board during the whole lecture. I liked the fact that he used an iPad for lecture too. This was the first time I had to work very hard for a class, but it was totally worth it. I learned a lot!
Didn't like him at all at first. He seemed to be overly uptight but as the semester went on, I enjoyed his class much more. Passes out note handouts, saving a lot of time. Extremely organized (which I find necessary for a challenging subject). Textbook only used for assigned homework. Tests are solely on the topics covered by the notes.
Great study guides and very helpful during office hours!
Had for Math 7 (C) and Math 15 currently (B). Prof. Pachas is a fantastic mentor and lecturer (printed notes). Set's clear expectations. This class is NOT for those looking for an easy A. Plenty of hw. I became a mathematician thanks to him, but I had to sweat for it. Highly recommend if you're a math/engineering major.
Very strict , No cellphones or he will kick you out, printed notes, we did 2 sections per day, A LOT of HW 10% of grade, 4 exams(90pts e.) he'll replace the lowest with final score (180pts)some extra credit in exams but very hard to get it. I didn't like how fast the lecture were, u have to work hard for a B & no life for an A. I'm math major
Professor Pachas is a good stats teacher. he is clear with what he wants but takes away the smallest points on exams. you have 2 group projects, homework, and exams. review the study guide and exam checklist 100% for exams and it WILL help. there may be better professors out there, but he is pretty good.
I like Prof. Pachas-Flores. He is in no way an easy going professor and is strict to his word. However, hes a good teacher for a complicated subject like Calc. 2. Test are hard but reasonable, for instance you will not see a type of question that you have never seen before . Just study notes, make notecards, and study hw (thats how I got an A).
I was scared to ask him questions, so office hours were not a choice for me. He is a tough grader and he will take points off for things you didn't expect. Though, his notes were very straight forward and concise and the combination of his homework helped me understand the material.
Although I found his lecturing style & demeanor to be quite rough, this man is responsible for showing me how to PROPERLY study for any math course. If it weren't for him making us do our hw METICULOUSLY and ORIGINALLY (not simply plagiarized from soln's manual, Slader, etc.), I would never have understood how to really learn math. Thx, Pachas.
He's rough with his strict policies, but becomes nice after half the class drops or gets kicked out. He lectures clearly using handouts and assigns mandatory online hw. His notes and study guides reflect whats on the tests, but takes points off for the smallest things. 2 projects, 4 Exams, a cumulative final, and barely any extra credit.
Took Calc2. Class started with 40 students, half withdrew before the final, I myself got a 23% on his first exam (there is no curve). Given his grading style, it seemed like he wanted to weed out kids in the class. I would advise people to looks at his past classes to see his grade distribution because it's not good (at least for calculus).
Clear lectures. You have to do is pay attention in class to notices what he asks for. The handouts were very helpful as well.
Very detailed and organized lectures. Make sure you read the checklists before exams. The projects help a lot with the grade, don't skip them.
I dont recommend this professor. His grading is completely unreasonable. You can get a question correct but receive zero credit if its not a carbon copy of his answer. He gives way too much mandatory hw (12hrs/wk), and only the hardest problems on exams. No curve. Final was crazy long. It seemed like he tried to weed people out ease his workload
Overdue review for Calc II. This professor made the class too difficult and wasnt helpful during office hours. His exams are too long, but also the questions are very specific examples of applying the formulas. You have to do all of the hw to get an A (every single problem), and the hw takes forever because he assigns too much. No curve as well.
Prof Pachas's class is difficult, but he will do his best to ensure that you understand the material during class. His exams are difficult and you will need to do it exactly as you were told or else you won't get full credit. However, he is great at teaching math. I've struggled with math for the longest time and he was able to help me understand
He has too many rules. It makes spending time in the class harder than it needs to be. It's not a fun or enjoyable learning experience. Aside from this his grading is infuriating and not in line with the standards for calc 3. I ended up dropping far into the semester because it was clear that the final wouldn't be favorable. Take w/ another prfsr
He is very helpful during office hours. Exams are based on lectures and homework. Dont get too discouraged if you do poorly on the first exam. I bombed the first exam but after going to office hours regularly I ended up with an A.
I am fairly good at math and I haven't done worse in any class before. My first test went horrible, but my friends in the class appeared to do worse than me. His grading is to a format, but I never understood what I was doing wrong with the format. Even when I got the right answer, he would cross-out the whole problem without an explanation.
The worst professor I have ever had. Tough grader, averaging exam scores are 50/100, heavy homework that you will NEVER going to finish. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS.
He always have so many homework and you are like spending your whole life writing problems he posted. Idk why he is doing this and lots of ppl have complained over it. AND His tests are long and DIFFICULT, much more DIFFICULT than what he gives in lectures, and the average of test are just LOW.
I'm a straight A student, I dropped his class. I lost tons of points on the first exam. I asked him for help to understand my mistakes he was very mean and hurtful in his response. My second exam was even worst than my first exam. Don't take this professor, he has no value for students grades and how it impacts their entire future.
There was nothing that could have prepared us for the exam. The exam questions were ten times more difficult than anything we ever saw during the lectures or homework. The class mean of the first exam was under 50% . And he refused to allow anyone to talk about the exam or discuss anything related to the exam. Avoid this professor!
Today my education journey and dreams have ended at the hands of Professor Pachas. I have studied for over 14 years with the dream of transferring to UCLA engineering school. Today thanks to Mr. Pachas eccentric and reckless grading he shattered my dreams with a C on Math 8. I can't get to UCLA engineering school with a C on Math.
PACHAS FLORES IS THE WORST TEACHER EVER. This guy is totally disrespectful, impolite and has no heart. During lockdown, he had absolutely no consideration for his students, he did not care if we were feeling stressed out bc of the pandemic. He never answers emails, he just doesnt care about ppl and made me lose the motivation to study. TO AVOID
I took Professor Flores my freshman year. While he comes off as strict, he is a good instructor. He provides lecture notes every class which helps you focus on lecture and he uses an iPad which makes note clean. He replaces your worst exam with your final exam score (which can be a massive help). Overall a solid choice. Work hard.
If I pass the class, it would be thanks to YouTube and Khan Academy! It is normal to get lost or confused during an advanced math lecture. And it is normal to rise your hand, ask a question and the teacher will explain! Not with Mr. Pachas, he creates an atmosphere where if you ask a question you risk getting scolded in front of the class.
Here are my 2 cents about Prof. Flores; Please don't make my mistake! I ignored the glaring warnings about this professor and paid the price with my near perfect GPA. Prof. Flores will live up to his reputation on campus and hurt your GPA thus your transfer options, thus your future. Do yourself a favor and avoid his class by all means possible.
He can oftentimes be a very difficult person, but he's not the worst. Still, I strongly believe that the math department should hire professors that are more clear and articulate in the way they explain abstract concepts, especially when it comes to mathematics, which is arguably one of the most abstract disciplines that exist.
Really liked the handouts. This is the class where I really learned how to write proofs.
I had received good grades on all assignments, but then the first exam hit. The class average on Exam 1 was a 47%. I do not think this was due to lack of understanding, but instead because of William's harsh grading. I'm really not happy with this professor.
He started fine, but as the days went on he got more annoyed by questions and muted the chat about a week in. I tried vising office hours 3 times and he wasn't there each time. he takes off a lot of points for grammar on exams in a math class? he stopped recording lectures because god knows why, and he deletes essential worksheets. DONT TAKE HIM
If you're not amazing at math, don't take this professor. He is incapable of explaining things clearly and concisely. He does not record lectures. He does not attend office hours. He does not reply to e-mails. He grades harshly and even marks you down for grammar. He gets frustrated when you ask questions. More than half of the class dropped.
Professor Pachas was one of the worst professors I have had. Online learning is very difficult for some students and he doesn't care if you are struggling. He doesn't answer questions, emails, and doesn't even show up for office hours. I had to drop this class after the first exam to save my GPA. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
the first days he seemed alright, but he grew irritated and would randomly be rude to us when asking questions. If you're not a gifted math genius then DON'T TAKE HIM! never answered emails and was never there for his own office hours, he was so hold to get a hold of and the ONE time you would, he would be rude and bothered. Take another math prof
The WORST. Doesn't provide any sort of rubric, inefficient at teaching (weeks behind), grades arbitrarily. Unbearable personality (rude/confrontational). He considers all students to be either cheaters or stupid and is continually condescending. Half his syllabus is req's to show you're not cheating. Of 30 students, 25 dropped w/8 weeks to go.
Even as a math lover, it's a really tough class and subject. But I feel like I learned a lot. The class consists of mostly lectures, homework assigned at the end of each class, 4 tests, and a final. Definitely need to put in efforts, but a great teacher who knows his stuff. He's there after class if you have questions and is helpful.
Handouts for every lecture, which saves a lot of writing. Knows his stuff. He is also helpful during office hours. 4 short exams, one final project, and a final exam. Homework and project help a lot! Make sure you participate during class. Very good choice.
the worst professor I ever met before Lots of Homework Hard grader and must follow every detail steps what he writes on the class. Never accept a new method to solve the problems really really really bad and stubborn.
As soon as you add Professor Flores to your class schedule, boss music begins to play in the background. This guy will KO you on the first exam, then flying roundhouse kick you on the second. He is like the Lvl.9 CPU in super smash bros. The most important thing is to never give up, and when things get tough, tell yourself: "Eigen-do it!"
This Linear Algebra class was BY FAR the toughest math class I've ever taken, but I learned a lot. I finally have a better understanding of vectors, dimensions, and mathematical proofs. This class gave me a new perspective on mathematics.
I took the online Math 54 class. The exams are easy if you are prepared. He posts study guides and sample exams which are similar to the actual quizzes and exams. Easy to pass with a good grade if you do the assignments and exams.
I have had the honor of taking 13 class at SMC all instructors have ranged from good to exceptional professors with exception of Prof. William. Prof. William created an atmosphere of negativity and fear in the class, I was scared to risk asking him a question. I dropped the class and will be taking it again next semester.
Prof Pachas-Flores runs an extremely strict class He will kick anyone out who is on their phone doodling or if he thinks you aren't paying full attention. He teaches one way of solving problems in class, uses a different way for the online homework & gives tests that combine both but only accepts one very specific answer Gets upset for asking ?s
stay away if you care about your gpa
Very good examples about real-life situations related to this class. 4 Exams, one final project, and homework. Make sure you do the homework and the project. That helps a lot with the grade. Very helpful during office hours.
He teaches the material very well. Very clear lectures. It is a lot of work but it is worth it. Make sure you do the homework the same week as the lectures. The handouts also help a lot with note taking.
I had to work hard for it. Professor Pachas would help me during office hours every week. I learned a lot from this class. It really helps me with the upper division math classes Im taking right now.
Solid teacher, has a very strict way of grading. You have to answer test questions in a specific way that he teaches, can't use outside methods.
I never thought I would pass this class. Definitely take him for online classes if he is available because you can always look back at his recordings if you missed something in class. He does take attendance everyday! Also he gives out participation points.. always participate when he asks questions. even if you are wrong. good luck!!
Dont take him for online classes at all. In maths everyone gets a similar answer, but in his class if two or more people get similar answers then he blames you for copying and gives a zero without even listening your side of the story . Would never recommend him.
Dr. Pachas-Flores was the best statistics teacher I could have hoped for. Math has never been easy for me, but he explained it clearly and really worked with me during office hours. He wants his students to do well. He is very organized and grades fairly. Use his office hours office often as it makes a big difference. Highly recommend!!
I do not recommend. The subject itself I did not find difficult and yet in his class it felt the worst. He creates a completely unsupportive environment for the students, it is like he is there to ?lecture? rather than teach and would rather nobody to ask any questions. After 3 years at SMC this is the worst professor I have taken
Great teacher. Definitely knows his stuff. Make sure you do the homework and go to office hours.
Lost signal during class and teacher refused to let me join back and marked me absent. Attendance on the dot is mandatory. Will not meet with you at anytime outside office hours. The course material is easy to follow but tests are different from homework. Dishonest professor. Avoid at all costs if you care about your grades!!!
Very helpful during office hours. Lectures are very clear and easy to understand. There are 4 exams and one final exam. Make sure you read the checklists.;)
Great lectures. I really feel prepared for next math classes thanks to this class. Strongly recommended.
His lectures are good! Might be boring at some point but he explains the material very well. He is picky about some things. Office Hours he will help you! I thought I was going to fail his class but I ended with a B. He cares about his students to pass.
Very helpful during office hours. The class was awesome.
From the very first day of class, it was clear that Professor Pachas was passionate about mathematics and interested the success of each student. He made even the most intimidating algebraic equations seem approachable and doable. Highly recommended
Very organized handouts and very detailed solutions to the exercises during lecture. I really enjoyed his class.
Do not take this professor. He is friendly and his lectures aren't bad but he grades the tests very hard. He will take a point off for every single minor mistake. If you want an A, take any other professor. I went to office hours, studied, did tutoring, went to the math lab, and even studied with other students in the class and still ended with a B
Professor Pachas' teaching style was both engaging and effective. He is very passionate about the subject and makes sure students understand what's going on. This class was very organized. Also, his office hours were always a valuable resource. Highly recommended.
Doctor Pachas's real world examples and practical applications of statistics made the subject come alive. He has a knack for connecting theory to everyday scenarios, which made the material not only easier to grasp but also more interesting.
Professor Pachas pushed me to improve my mathematics and communication of mathematics. The course was challenging. He tries his best to set students up for success in future courses, so it was a good amount of homework and accuracy on exams were important. He is kind and will take the time to meet with you during his office hours.
Honestly, he isn't the worst teacher I've had, but as a freshman, I wouldn't recommend him for your first year. HW is not for a grade; quizzes and exams determine your fate. If you want to succeed in his class, most say to do the HW and go to OH. Very strict grader and lectures will not prepare you for the tests. Do not take if you want an easy A.
He may be a better professor in other areas of math, but as a freshmen I don't recommend. He is a very strict grader and your grade is made up from taking quizzes bi-weekly(then every week) and 4 exams over the course of a semester. There is a textbook for the class but it does not prepare you well for the exams. You are better off another class.
I actually enjoyed his lectures -- Discrete Structures has some pretty interesting topics. He didn't really explain exactly how he wanted you to answer some of the exam questions, yet graded as if he gave you a precise rubric. Homework isn't graded. I would suggest you bring your proofs from the homework to office hours for feedback.
god he grades on such arbitrary things
For the people who are actually ready for UCLA, USC or wherever, this class won't be a problem. You just simply have to make sure you don't fall behind, and use your resources to understand math. THIS IS COLLEGE AND NOT EVERYTHING CAN BE EASY OR HANDED ON A PLATTER. Also, Pachas is a supportive teacher who brings the juice while teaching math.
terrible professor
He is the toughest grader. I did all the HW, did my best on every test, but it was never enough because he expects your work to be perfect. He does not give points even if you are on the right track. If the answer is wrong or the way you came to the outcome is off because you didn't separate the limits, you won't get points. I don't recommend.
He's very strict on doing things his way. There's no sort of extra credit or credit for doing homework. Exams determine your fate and are either nothing like the class work or much harder. No sort of review days and besides one study guide before an exam you have to find your own ways of studying. Overall not worth the struggle.
