He has very clear handouts, so you know exactly what's expected. Very available and open during office hours, and does appointments.
he sucks, WAYYYYY to much work
Lots of work in this class, but he is very helpful with writing and ideas. Good teacher for this type of class!
I have never been more bored in a class. I was so bored every class that I wanted to cry. There is to much work to do in class. 5 books we had to read. We inly spoke about 2 of them in class. This class just plain sucks.
Liked this class alot. Good teacher. The War was awsome.
Lots of notes. Lots of writing. Very fair grading rubric. Lots of reading required. Enjoyed the group work done.
Culture of War: what I learned...don't talk in his class, especially if you're a girl, because you are always wrong. His writing assignments weren't that bad, but he grades really tough. Surpringly easy A.
he is very confusing. He goes on and on in class and I find myself wondering what the hell he is talking about. By far the most boring class I have taken. I tend to fall asleep alot. The TONS of readings are ridiculous and BORING!
I had this professor for The Great War of ISU and have TA'd for him in his Frontiers class. Stay on top of the readings and write your papers and you'll get the A. This semester has been full of extra credit bordering on rediculous. Great guy overall.
had him for comparitive frontiers and it was by far the most boring class that i have ever been in. and you had to go because attendence was taken. there was a ton of writing and it wasnt really clear what he wanted until he explained the day before.
He is cool and is very interested in the topic. He likes us to ask questions and debate with him on topics. I love his class.
Great teacher, very dry sense of humor, very interested in what he is discussing. I love going to this class.
I heard this class was going to be hard, but its turning out to be a blast! Keep up with the readings, and write the papers, you'll get an A. Encourages classroom discussion, even in lecture. Also encourages all points of view. The Great War at ISU is full of extra credit opportunities! FUN!
i had reger for culture of war...and its a lot of work, 5 papers, but its a ton of fun, i really do enjoy going....just participating the great war of ISU is enough of a reason to sign up for the class...i mean, you get to "kill" people everyday of the semester, its sweet, i recommend
He is a fairly entertaining lecturer and a cool guy. However, he grades very hard and only has two writing tests and one big paper.
Only three grades for semester and attendance can only hurt your grade. Seems like a rather tough teacher for a 100 level class but is very entertaining. Real good guy and a good teacher.
This class was great! I heard I should drop it, but decided to stick it out, and I'm glad I did. 5 papers, but he's not a difficult grader, and there are tons of extra credit opportunities! Attendance is a must, class material is dry at times, but overall interesting and the great war is great fun!
I would bet that crack couldn't keep me awake in this class!!
It was Culture of War and we played a War game, It was very interesting and he had no quiz or exams at all. Final was cake. Paper weren't too bad either. Fun relaxing atmosphere.
I took his culture of war class last semester, very easy. We had no tests or quizzes and the final was easy. There is a ton of e.c. avaliable, although attendance is a must. Besides, you get to march around the quad and have an actual war.
The class wasn't too bad. The ISU War was a fun project. The papers kinda suck, unless you are interested in war. I got B's on everything and still got an A in the class. There is a lot of easy extra credit given-just go to class.
This class sucks. I guess his war class was awesome but his pirate class just sucks. Its 3 classes in one a history lecture, a reading class, and an english class. Tons of reading, papers, and a boring lecture. Really unenjoyable. Do not take!
Easy grader, very interactive course
This class could not be any more boring... You have to read 4 books on pirates, take quizes on those, 2 other essays, a project, and the most extensive note takeing I have ever been a part of. If you need to take an IDS 121 class choose baseball like my roomate. Most Boring class I have ever taken
This pirates class is the worst class i ever took at ISU. It is like 4 classes in one, lots of writing, lots of reading (40 pages a night), and boring lectures. I heard that his culture of war class was awesome which was why i took this pirates class. But i was sooooo wrong. Avoid!!!
If you take this class you are in a for a world of pain. You will waste 4+ hours of your life each week. Absolutely the worst, most boring, and useless class that you can take. If I could change one thing this semester it would be taking this class, and I have had two drinking tickets. Do the math.

the pirates class is quite possibly worse than having all of your limbs amputated, being blind, and being deaf, all at once. if i had to choose between pirates or dropping my laptop off a skyscraper, my laptop would be shattered already.
Spend 1 day in the pirate course and you'll learn that most of the people who gave him a bad rating were the ones who talked the whole class period- if they showed up. The pirate class is a little dry, but give Reger some credit. Drop by his office before you complain. He's a great professor who actually cares about students and is willing to help.
Hes a nice guy but...its a pirates class. youre so bored during class you dont know what to do with yourself. you have 4 5pg papers you have to write and after every book you read you must take an essay quiz on them. sooo good luck if you want to take this course!
This class is not that bad. the people who gave him a poor rating are the ones who were expecting it to be a blow off class. If you treat it like every other class, then you should get at least a B.
Reger is a good professor but you have to pay attention the whole time. He gives you chances to improve your grades, and all in all the class is a good one.
I hate all these lazy students that come here and knock this wonderful man. He cares about his students more than any professor at ISU - that's why he assigns so much reading and so many papers! He wants his students to learn how to be functional, educated adults. You will work in his classes, but he'll be working right along side of you.
BORING. Lecture has proved to be worthless. The information he lectures on does not appear on the essay tests (for the most part). His lectures are 50 minutes of constant talking 2 days a weeks - very difficult to stay awake. He has an attendance policy - so don't skip! The topics covered are all political - no real tactics were covered. Hard Class
Cultures of war was a pretty lame class and the lectures were very boring, but he's a pretty easy grader. I ended up getting an A putting forth minimal effort. 3 papers, spying game, 300 pts worth of essays each friday and the final is what it consists of. Not a bad class, but very boring to sit through for the semester. Only allowed 4 misses.
Is overall a hard class if you dont prepare for the tests. Has a 15 page paper due, on a topic he tells you just dont put it off and you'll do well. Other than that make up study guides for the essay test questions he gives you and you should be fine. He is fair grader, helpful if you go talk to him, and cares about what he is doing.
Great professor. The first one I have ever had at ISU that truly cares about his students. Very understanding and helpful. Grades fair, tests are a sinch with the study guide, just focus on the 15 page research paper.
Horrible teacher. I had him for cultures of war. He is a smart and nice guy but really does not know how to teach. Even the TAs did not know what to do half the time. There was also 1500 pages to read, and lectures had no relevance to the class-yet they were manditory
Not a bad teacher, but not great either. He's very nice, but lectures were really boring. The paper topics were confusing. But he is a fair grader and I did learn quite a bit.
The class about Pirates get old really fast. Readings and lectures are really borring, The paper is pretty long and he grades pretty hard. The tests have little to do with lecture at all.
Horrible class! The quizzes are over minute details in the readings rather than on major themes, so its based more on memorization than actual learning. Harsh grader on the papers. Attendance is counted daily in a lecture hall. Not very clear course.
Quite possibly one of the best professors I have had my seven plus semesters in college; class lectures covered the material quite well, though the final was nothing close to a cake-walk. The main focus of the class was a 15-20 page research paper. When asked for help, he was more than glad to provide it; look forward to having him again
Nice guy. That is it. He is the worst and hardest grader I have ever had. WE talk about frontiers and the most useless things. His homework assignments are impossible, and we have to read 3 novels/text at the same time. His lectures are boring and he uses no powerpoint, just talks the whole time. Most people in my class agree with me.
Boring class!!! Lots of work, way too much work for a Gen Ed class, you get to write another research paper liek you did in high school. Tons of boring reading and expect homework almost every class period. Read 4 books at the same time with up to over 100 pages a night to read, please save yourself the workd and DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS.
By far the worst grader i have ever encountered with. Wrote things on my paper that were irrelevant to what i was talking about. Everyone in the class did bad on the Research papers and then sent us an email blaming it on us. Obviously they did not help, teach it right, or think this is a graduate class. ITS A GEN ED...NEVER TAKE IT!!!!!
Had section of 308 that was Early Modern Europeon Warfare. Lots of textbook reading adn disscussion. 5 short papers that were critisims of texts. final was take home. disscussions were pretty borring and very repetative.
The name of the class sounded interesting, that's about it. Way too much work for a gen-ed level class. Lectures are incredibly boring and useless, but attendance is mandatory. Made us do a bunch of pointless assignments, and is a hard grader. Avoid this class at all costs
For cultures of war, there was a lot of work. Many projects, four books to read, each project took a lot of effort, including a project where you have to find an veteran and then interview them. The lectures were not for the feint of heart, although he was a nice but boring guy, I would not reccommend this class.
Suppose to read 4 novels, but the quizes are not worth a lot of points. It is very back ended class. With a group project near the end. And 3 other large projects due at the end, but there is no final. I would recommend this class, but just to start the projects early, thers is 2 page papers every once in a while, start those early to.
HIST 200 was a hard class--but it was suppose to be. Was sort of dissapointed by his lack of enthuaism for the subject(piracy)--but he'll tell you that he enjoys Russian history alot more. The 15-20 paper was tough, but Dr. Reger is VERY helpful with it if you seek him out. He's also wicked smart
I had this teacher for a gen ed comperative frontiers class. He made the class extremely hard. 4 novels with 4 papers 4 tests and 4 projects, have to learn how to play a native american flute and write a paper on it, and a project at the end. TOO MUCH WORK FOR A GEN ED
Nice guy! he was willing to talk in office hours but in my opinion is NOT good "teacher". requires4 BOOKS+He has 3 hours of lecture+NO helpful study guide or visuals. He lectures on important info the day of a test and gives little or no help to study. If you are a visual or hands on learner i highly highly recommend taking a different class!
I liked how he broke us up into groups to talk about our family heiritage, I learned a lot about the history of my own family from writing the papers. He assigned four novels which was way more than my other classes but I really did like Mexifornia. He was able to keep our interest through discussions in class.
Good Professor all around. If you show up to class, take down notes, and actively discuss the topics on hand its an enjoyable class. His tests compose of fill in the blank and essay questions. He also gives a lot of EC. All together I'd recommend him to anyone.
Don't take this class unless you're ready for a challenge. He makes you read 4 books, write 5 papers, play 5 songs on a flute (which is $60), 1 group presentation, and 4 quizzes. His lectures are really hard to follow and focus more on abstract thinking than main concepts in the books. I absolutely dreaded coming to this class.
this was a difficult class for a gen ed. my class was 3 hours and he loved to lecture for 2 of the 3 hours which was difficult to sit through. it was hard to take notes because he would talk so fast and his directions for assignments were not very clear. if you want to do well you have to go to class and read all 4 books he assigns.
Our class was a night class so it got really hard to stay interested. But the professor did a lot of different things to keep people involved. We watched movies and did skits and talked about food. It was good. Lot's of quizzes and stuff but not hard. The books were good. I liked the cookbook. I would take it again.
Really nice guy, class was kinda hard but its a weed out history class so its expected. Come to class and offer to discussion, do good on the one huge paper and your good for an A or B. Go to his office and he helps you out a lot. Two tests are all writing and kinda difficult but doing well on the 20 page paper makes up for it
5 books, 3 papers, 3 tests, and a presentation. The books you have to read are more interesting than the class. Monotonous in lectures and goes into too much detail (2 weeks on the Civil War left time for 20 minutes on Vietnam on the last day of class). Paper topics are not clearly explained and he's a tough grader. Dislike and very disappointed
Terrible terrible terrible teacher. I love history but this class was brutal. He rambles on about every little thing and doesnt stop to take questions. His grading is also suspect. Avoid avoid avoid.
Great guy, great teacher. I thouroughly enjoyed his class and with some hard work you can earn an honest A. And if your lazy and don't want to work you probably shouldn't be a History major.
This guy expects a lot from you. He has you write a 20 page paper which is due at the end of the semester. He has you do pick sources, and turn them in to him long before the paper is due. As well as write a summary paper. He basically runs his class like a grad class. He expects you in class and to have the read as well as those other assignments.
Dr. Reger is an excellent professor for if for no other reason than that he makes you think. Yes, he gives a lot of writing but if you do the work and make an effort you can do well. I have had three classes so far with him and all required a lot of work but I feel like they make me a better student and I actually learned something.
Hard class, nice guy though, gives out lots of extra credit. Sometimes goes off on irrelevant tangents and test questions are always a surprise. 4 books, 4 tests, a model project and a group project along with a paper and you play a flute that you buy online at the end of the semester. I tried very hard and got a B. Nice guy, interesting material.
I have never loathed a class more in my life. I'm sure Reger is an okay guy outside of class, but this class was ridiculous. He rambles and the topic of the class is unbearable. Pirates sounds like a cool topic to write about until you actually try writing about them. There are no sources and you will struggle.. AVOID
Be prepared to buy a native american flute and play a 3 minute song you compose in front of the class(LOL no joke). 4 novels and 4 tests. Read the books, study for the tests, do the assigments, and come to class. If you do all of those then you should have no problem getting an A. Reger is an "interesting" guy to say the least
Don't take this class unless you are willing to work. There are four books. You NEED to read the books and take notes on all of the names and important terms in the books. He is very willing to help and gives out extra credit. You have to play a flute but overall the class is do able. My roomate and I took it together and will both get As.
He does not hide that he makes the course difficult for the students. He inhibits the learning process on purpose and even admits this. You will have to perform a song on a Navajo Flute for most of the points in the class. There are many other projects and exit papers. Grade is based on points out of 1000 instead of individual percent grades.
I cant stand him at all. His class is so hard and he teaches with only his words. He gives no powerpoint or textbook for clarity. His tests are extremely hard and you write two papers but he doesn't grade those too difficult. I hear people with other teachers like this class so just pick a different teacher and you'll be good.
Best tip for success here: During the 1st week, go into myillinoisstate, select under academics "course registration", then under IDS 121.24 click 'drop' then try and register for IDS 121.21 literary studies with Chris Mays. Seriously, this class is a train-wreck for those looking for the gen-ed requirement. Source: people who have taken this class
Teaches with his words, the notes aren't specific and the tests are tough. The papers are tough and broad, and the books we have to read are no fun. Makes the class difficult for the students and expects to be understood through very long lectures.
I honestly failed all the tests, but I did really well on the papers and group project and passed with a B. There is a lot of reading to do. Take the extra credit opportunity he gives you.
Reger is a professional historian, he is a very smart man. Helpful, loves what he does, and wants students to do well. HOWEVER. this is a teacher who is so absolutely unclear in the direction of his lectures and expectations that you simply cannot even imagine unless you take class with him. Coming from a history major. Feels like your in space.
Horrible teacher, long lectures, boring, makes no effort to help kids and expects you to know everything.... Good luck
Laziest teacher I have ever come across. Loses peoples tests like no other. So lazy that he just puts copy of the test of the overhead and has you write your answers on notebook paper. Takes way too long to grade anything. Does not use reggienet so you will have no idea what your grade is all semester. But, everything is generally very easy.
This class is by far one of the most un organized classes I have ever taken. There is in class essays or short paragraphs you write through out the year and put them in a portfolio in the end. Tests ambiguous. You never know what to study. He by far is the lazyies professor I HAVE EVER SEEN. Most if not everything is graded by the TA. Dont take
Worst teacher I have ever had. Went in several times to ask for help, no direction given. EXTREMELY vague in lectures and instruction. Basically have to fend for yourself in this one. Expects way too much from undergrads without helping at all. Condescending. Definitely makes you think but shows little care for students. Definitely avoid if possibl
do not take his classes, terrible professor, lazy, no personality at all and just assigns too much reading. everything he assigns is super broad. he thinks you don't have any other classes to study for and can focus all your attention on his extremely dull class.
Reger lectured every class while very little of it was actually on exams or quizzes. Must read a chapter every week because there will be a quiz where you can't use any notes. One essay worth 35% of the grade. He never knows your grades ever except at mid term or the final grade and doesn't use any online stuff not even for grades. Don't take!!
THE ABSOLUTE WORST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD. expects WAY too much. acts like his class is the only class being taken by a college student. DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO ACTUALLY TEACH CONTENT. comes to class to literally LECTURE THE ENTIRE TIME with no slides, no notes, nothing. then expects you to know all the material for weekly quizzes.
IF YOU DON'T BUY THE BOOK OR DON'T SHOW UP YOU WILL NOT PASS THIS CLASS!! There are weekly reading quizzes. Readings every week about 50 pages. There is no use of Reggienet, you can only see your grades if you go to office hours. The test is literally copy and pasted from the study guide so they can be easy. He doesn't use any slides just talks
Honestly the worst professor I've had at ISU. His lectures make no sense and are entirely different from the tests. This was my first History class I took, and he nearly made me want to switch my major. He is an extremely poor teacher, difficult grader, and impossible communicator. Do not take.
Bill Reger is the worst and most lazy professor I ever had. He doesnt care if you pass or not and is nowhere to be found during his office hours. He is a extremly tough grader and puts things on tests that he doesnt teach. If you take this class get ready to ruin your GPA as you will surely not get an A or anything close. Avoid this professor!
Tests had nothing to do with readings and lectures, awful teacher for history. do not take
From what I've seen in class, he doesn't like it if a student puts their pen down during notes because that means they "aren't paying attention." I would not recommend him in any capacity.
I took four classes with Reger over my time at ISU. He was easily the best history professor I had during this time. As long as you put the effort in, his classes are extremely rewarding. I used information learned in his classes throughout my graduate studies in history.
He doesn't have powerpoint slides, so he just says the notes out loud. Little of what he say's is actually on the test. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM.
William Reger is one of the worst professors I have ever had at ISU. He assigns so much reading and then never discussed it. The quizzes are so hard because he doesnt talk about the reading or provide any study guides. All we do is watch movies which sounds great except he never does his job so tests and quizzes are impossible.
Bill is the worst professor at ISU. He just talks all class and nothing he says is even on the test. The test's and quizzes are almost impossible and he makes it extremely hard to know your grade. I would avoid his classes at all cost and if you do make sure to dedicate your entire social life to reading for his class.
This man cannot teach. You better take good notes cause he doesnt use PowerPoint. The man just talks. Very boring. I almost fall asleep every class. His tests are tough with a lot of writing.
He clearly is not passionate about the subject matter. I thought this would be a really fun class, and it was not. He is monotone and requires you to pick groups for the final on the first day of class. He does not post any grades online so youll never know your grade unless you go ask him outside of class, but he does give a lot of extra credit.
This guy is easily the worst professor I have ever encountered. Random pop quizzes that are impossible. Grades hard. Lectures read straight from his notes. His PowerPoints are no help. Save yourself and your money do not take his classes
This teacher is NOT a good one. While he seems caring, his powerpoint "slides" are barebones topic titles with no detail. He gives a LOT of information in class and most of it is not even tested on. He gives pop quizzes that are about completely random terms and topics found IN THE BOOK. You wont ever know what topics are important to study either.
I have Professor Reger for Medieval Russian History. He is very passionate about what he teaches and you can tell. You learn so much from his lectures and he is really funny. He is also super laid back and you are able to make up points on your test if you are not satisfied with the grade. Tests are not multiple choice so study vocab terms.
Dr. Reger doesn't have the most energy out of the professors in the History Dept. however he has the most gumption for his industry. Very knowledgeable about his many fields of history (primarily Russian history) and will always have an interesting perspective on the content being taught.
I took Reger's Medieval Russian History class, which he is very passionate about and well-versed in. The only homework was in-class open note essays on given articles and one test. Papers were quite easy, but the test was challenging. He is overall a great and understanding guy with late work and cares about the subject.
Easy class to pass, was not impressed with his technology skills. Very nice but rambled through lectures and would not make the most sense. Was not entirely clear about which chapters you were supposed to be on and did not make it as far into the curriculum as we were supposed to.
2 tests, 2 papers, and one overall grade for in class writing assignments You wont get those grades until its too late I passed but I had no idea what my grade was until the end You can email him but hell take his time to respond. Forces you to keep cameras on the whole time or youre kicked out of the zoom. randomly calls on you too, horrible
If you take History 101 for this man, good luck. He takes no notes, makes NO presentation, and just talks in front of the podium. If you actually want to learn in your class DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Good luck all.
He knows a lot about the topics and seems like a nice guy, but man I'm falling asleep in every lecture. There are never notes posted on the board so he just straight talks for over an hour. There is a crap ton of reading each week along with tough quizzes. The final paper is 6-7 pages long and is worth a huge part of your grade. Do not recommend
This class is a 75-minute lecture where he talks about whatever he wants. There is no guide to where the lecture is going, and there is no organization in his communication. When he speaks on unknown topics, he speaks as if we should understand what is going on. He goes on related tangents, but you will forget the initial topic. Requirement: coffee
Class is online for 2 weeks of this Semester. I am taking 5 courses & they all meet on zoom at the correct in-person time EXCEPT this course. It was scheduled at 3:35 MW & zoom was 12pm & conflicted with another class of mine. When emailed, his response came off rude/uninterested and told me to pick a course to drop as it was my fault for conflicts
This class pretty much consisted of test and one big paper. The lectures were confusing and soooo boring. There were no visuals or guides, just him talking in a very monotone manner. The test were written response and you have the read the textbook to understand the concepts. This class was very overwhelming for a GenEd!
Reger is an older classic professor. His lectures are bland as he speaks in a monotone voice for an hour about his subject. Sometimes he jumps around in his lectures which make it confusing. He also has a weird test structure. Overall, if you're not actually interested in the class topic, you're not gonna have a good time.
William reger has an older style of teaching. His class is very boring and his style of teaching is just sitting in front of a podium and talking about random topics to the whole class. There are no slides or presentations for the lectures he just speaks about whatever he wants the whole time. His test structure is a written paragraph response.
Does not know how to use our online classroom so turning things in is difficult. For my class he did 10- 50 point summaries on readings he assigned. The readings are not the worst but trying to follow along during lectures is difficult. He often goes on tangents about things we have never heard of and I was never sure what to write.
He seems like a great guy but is terrible at teaching. He does not use any sort of visual aid during lectures and is extremely monotone and quiet. He rambles on about unrelated things sometimes. In lectures you need to write literally everything he says because it might be important. No way to know for sure. Lectures were empty before the midterm.
This is the single worst professor I have ever had. I just transferred here last semester and he is by far the worst professor here (IMO). It was so bad that I dropped the course.
12th week in our class and I had a perfect grade in the class then had to leave one day for personal reasons, he emailed stating it wad rude I left without letting him know my plans. I replied politely that it is not much of his concern but thank you. He replied with an attitude doubling down. One of my assignments from week 3 was docked 5 points.
Sat in the front of class and lectured with no PowerPoint and nothing written on the board every class. Lots of reading and few assignments. Tough grader and doesn't provide much guidance.
I would 100% never take him again, easily.
2 exams and a research paper are basically your whole grade, the teacher is boring and just yaps all class and doesn't put anything on the board. If you study for the exams this class is a cakewalk though.
As with the rest of the ratings Dr. Reger was trash and that's an understatement to say the least. Lectures the entire time and will often go off on tangents not related to the chapters he posted. For my class he didn't even finish out the lectures he had put in the syllabus. 3 tests, a paper, and two "extra credit assignments" which are 5/5.
Professor Reger, a person of many words, straight out of the textbook. He has no slides (power points), like the worst playground ever. He is about as predictable as a those magic 8 balls you shook as a kid. The grading is similar to playing darts with a blindfold. Chill guy though.
if you dont have to take him, don't. I played tetris everyday in this class just say whatever i guess, I was also confused on how I got an A
Reger is a monotone lecturer and does not use any sort of visual aids. Tests are 7 handwritten "essay questions" and some of the questions are about things we never talked about in class. He shows several movies, but we never ended up finishing any of them. However, the class is good insight into both modern and old pirates, I learned a lot.
Taking this class felt like an actual chore, every time I'd go I would fall asleep; he only reads the book in the quietest voice ever and expects you to give feedback and thoughts on the most boring thing ever, during final grades he removed one of my grades out of nowhere and never reached out or let me know why. Don't take his class.
Lectures were a struggle - the professor just reads from the textbook without any visual aids. However, with focused studying and tools like unstuckstudy, I was able to stay on top of the material and earn a solid grade. Not the most engaging class, but manageable.
