Bill is a great teacher, and if you pay attend class and pay attention, you'll do well. The class felt like a relaxed version of high school rather than a college class, and the class discussions are interesting. He's friendly and understanding with assignments. Bill's ES 1 is a fun, easy elective to take if that's what you're looking for.
Bill is a real great teacher. I absolutely enjoyed his ES 1 class. You'll see lot's of movies, have some fun group activities and he'll give you a ton of extra credit opportunities. This is a very easy class and you'll learn a lot about the environment. Super easy and fun class.
Bill was an awesome teacher. I recommend anyone that is considering taking this class, to do it! Tons of great films to watch, super easy on hw and assignments, and an excellent speaker which got the whole class involved with each lecture. Seriously, one of my all time favorite teachers by far at De Anza (and I've been here for 2 years).
Pretty chill and stress free class. He wants you to learn and doesnt enforce tests but rather just be active in talking. So his discussions are awesome and recommend him as the coolest Environmental teacher around.
Bill was a great teacher, very helpful and quick to reply to my emails. Highly recommended!! My favorite :)
Bill is a easy-going teacher. He wants to just get the word out about the environment and wants you to go out and spread it out to your friends. He has a great personality. I enjoyed his class.
I absolutely loved taking his class. He's really understanding and tries to make the class as easygoing as possible. It mostly consists of group activities and film. I actually looked forward to going to his class. Definitely take him! :)
Bill wants all of his students to succeed. He is very helpful and understanding. He tries to keeps the classes exciting and they are. Great teacher just make sure you participate.
Bill's personality is described very clearly in the previous comments, but for the class, I actually learn and became interested to learn more about the environment. He made it fun and educational, something you can't find in most of the classes. Just DON'T BE ABSENT and enjoy the work you do in the class and you will be fine.
Bill has a great personality, gets a long well as long as you do your work and don't try to cheat. Honesty is what you want to keep in this class. Don't be absent and be engaged. if talks fast let him know he'll tries to slow down. Talk to him if you need help, he is a chill guy. A great place to learn about environment while having fun.
what can i say? i love everything about this guy. he taught me more about global climate change, he informed me of new ideas on renewable energy and recycling, he is funny and kind, he was extremely generous with extra credit, and i even made some new friends in his class including him. overall, mr. roeder taught me how to be a great steward.
Bill Roeder is an phenomenal teacher. I didn't know I wanted to be an environmental studies major until I took his class. Not only is he passionate, he is kind and truly wants to see his students succeed. He allows you to do presentations privately, offers extra credit, and encourages participation by having a great attitude all the time. Take!!!!
I took his ESCI 1 in the Fall and ES 1 in the Winter. He always comes to class prepared. I looked forward to going to class each day. His style makes the class exciting and interesting. Mr Roeder is a great speaker and he makes the class very interactive. He makes you think. Great teacher. I was not an ES major last Fall- I am now.
I literally begged Bill to add me to his ES 1 class. I wasn't on the wait list and the class was full. He took me anyway and I'm glad he did. I'm not an environmental major. I took the class for GE. I think about how I use resources each day now. Great class. I learned a lot." MAKE IT A GREAT DAY AND BE A GOOD STEWARD!"
What a great class. I learned more than I thought I would. Bill has a unique teaching style. he makes learning fun and makes you think. env jeopardy and debates, I even liked the POP quizzes. he gives clues that are hilarious. he is approachable, caring, and friendly. the class is not hard if you show up. best instructor I have have had here
i don't suggest him , his teaching method is playing and talking about his past experience in his childhood.
An enthusiastic and helpful professor! Quizzes are not tough as long as you listen to the class. He will offer you help if you have any question to ask. Almost no homework. An interesting and meaningful class.
Just show up to all his classes and you'll do fine! Literally...i would recommend just paying attention to his interesting lectures and taking decent notes since you can use them on his "pop quizzes" (usually you'll know if one is coming up) He's a funny guy, people should laugh more at his jokes, you guys are too serious haha
He is super nice and easy. He'll give you a lot of extra points and easy open notes quizzes(answers will be on his PowerPoint and videos which he shows us in class). When I took his class, we just have open notes quizzes and 1group presentation. Just follow him, and get A in this class!
Bill is a great guy and teacher! He wants everyone to feel comfortable and succeed outside of class as well. There are pop quizzes and homework, but he doesn't make you buy a book. Instead, you can use the kirsch center library which is in the same building as his class anyways. It's easy to pass and he works well with english learning students too
He's great! The class is super easy and he won't let you leave without learning. He makes the class really comfortable for everyone, international students and native English speakers alike. Don't cheat in his class, but there really isn't any reason to. The stuff is so easy. As long as he sees you put in some amount of effort, you're set for an A.
Best teacher in De Anza. He cares about you and wants to see you succeed. He is an inspiration to me and I recommend you take his class if you need an elective and unsure of what to take. If you just come to class (you'll want to!) and just listen you're pretty much garanteed an A. He doesn't require a book and gives answers on quizes! Best teacher
I really love his class! Roeder is a really nice professor. He is passionate to his job and really does dedicate to it. I really want to say thank you to him sincerely. Best professor I have ever met in De Anza College.
My favorite professor! His class was really easy going. He cares about his students, and does the best he can to make sure you pass. He gives pop quizzes every so often, but helps you on them when you need help. His lectures from his powerpoint slides, no tests, one final. Take Bill, it will probably be your favorite class, you won't regret it.
Bill is the most dedicated teacher I have ever met in De Anza. He is really passionate and his passion really shines through. His lecture is always interesting and fun (with lots of videos too). He does give in class pop quiz only to ensure attendance, but they are easy. His assignments are not too tough too and the workload is light! Take him!
Would take again x10000000. You can tell he is passionate about what he does and he really cares about his students. Took the online class, was exactly what i expected from an online class and i enjoyed it a lot.
Easiest teacher at De Anza. He wants you to succeed and he cares about all his students.
He is very responsible and very nice. He will reply to your email very fast and he is willing to answer your questions. The assignment is very light and easy A I think. He will give you the extra credit opportunity and very caring. I think it is easy A. btw, what I take is online class. I like Roeder!
Professor Roeder is so sweet. He's so enthusiastic about the class which is infectious. There's 1-2 assignments each week which takes about 1-3 hours. It's honestly such a low load course and if you do the work dilligently you're all set. I got 100% in the class and I enjoyed it a lot! I definitely recommend taking this class.
He's an amazing professor. He is always available and he's a fair grader. Highly recommended.
Easy A, as long as you follow the guide lines and hand in your work on time, you would automatically get a A. But be careful, I missed one of his assignment and he did not mark it no matter what reason I gave. Good luck
if you can't do well in this class, then you need to start making some hard choices in life and start to think about whether or not you should continue pursuing higher ed. VERY easy class and easy A. he holds pop quizzes but if you're paying attention in class you should be fine. not to mention on it he allows notes and he helps narrow down answers
He's great. Not only is it an easy A class, but you actually learn some important stuff (material flow). He walks you through things when you need help.
Prof. Roeder is a great online professor. I learned a lot about environmental science from him. He is fair and always gives clear feedback and homework. Just read his lectures, watch his videos, and turn in homework on time. I recommend him to anyone who is curious about environmental science.
I couldnt have asked for a better professor! When choosing my environment studies class I really just blindly chose & man Im so glad I chose Bill! He makes the class so interesting & comfortable for everyone. Plus he doesnt require us to purchase textbooks or anything! Just make sure to take good notes & pay attention. Hes ACTUALLY #1 professor
Best teacher ever
This professor--hands down--is the best one on delivering his knowledge to students. Rather than being your typical lecture class, he make the subject interesting and class amusing with his unique approach on teaching students. While most teachers bases grading on homework and tests, Mr. Roeder grades students on their efforts in class.
He makes it seem like his online class is VERY intimidating. But trust me, this is the best class I have ever took at De Anza (and its online). You'll learn AND the work is so bareable. He gives feedback on EVERY assignment. I was shook at the amount I learned with the amount of minimal effort i put in. but this class is a go! trust.
So Im not the sharpest kid in school. I dont know what it feels like to have straight As, or how it feels to have any As most of the time. This was the only class Ive ever taken where I had an A, and tried pushing for an A+. I got the A+
I do not regret taking Roeder's class at all. He makes his online class seem intimidating at first, but it really isn't as tough. It is just a matter of gathering information from outside sources, citing your sources, and doing your own personal work. As long as you turn in the assignments on time and do not plagiarize, you'll get an A.
Best class ever! You won't regret taking his class!
Great professor. I took his online environmental science class and it was so worth it. The class is set up so perfectly. Each week Professor Roeder would give us a few sources to use and a worksheet to download and complete (using the sources he gave us). So simple and easy to follow. He was so quick at grading and always gave great feedback.
Bill makes it clear in his intro what he expects from students and sticks to it. He doesn't accept late work. He is prompt with grading the weekly assignments and gives great feedback when warranted. No quizzes or tests, just put forth the effort in answering the questions with good detail on the weekly assignments and you will pass this class
He is a nice guy, but he is very emotional and blows things out of proportion. He made a big deal out of something that shouldve been taken care of 1 on 1 with the student.
I always did the assignments the day they were due. most are easy but some of them he doesn't give much info so you have to research yourself. there is also extra credit that's helpful. I forgot to turn in one assignment and did the extra credit (which was way easier) and got the points back.
Bill's a nice guy, easy grader. Let you use a piece of 'cheat sheet' for every quiz and test. Just show up to class and you will get at least a B+. Also only one homework for the whole quarter.
Goes by Bill. Is a teacher who actually wants to be there. Only 1 homework assignment for the whole quarter - easy one too. Passionate for environment. Posts everything on canvas and grades super fast. Wants students to succeed. Made final optional because of COVID. Lets you use a cheat sheet for quizzes. You should take his class, nice guy.
One assignment each week based on reading/videos and final optional due to COVID.
BEST professor on campus!! One of the best teachers I've ever had! Genuinely looked forward to coming to lectures every week, often the highlight of my day. Super kind and funny man, very empathetic, casual and fun atmosphere. Great instructor, learned a lot! Almost 100% in-class work, abundant extra credit -- I got a 115% final grade. Loved!
Second time taking a class with Prof "Bill" Roeder. I took it online, but it was still a good class. There wasn't much that I hadn't learned before though, lots of similarities with his ES1 class. Online he has PPT lectures with voice overs - you have to download them to listen to them. A nice guy, if you are looking to take an ES class he is great
Overview of being a FM (Facility Manager), something he takes really seriously. A cool guy, who is very knowledgable, and makes presentations with audio lectures to teach online. Don't actually learn much about the program offered at De Anza, mainly focuses on what a FM actually is/does. If curious in pursuing that, then take this class.
Great professor! A few of the resources he provides like some of the videos may not seem applicable or relevant, but you'll see they're useful for completing the journals. He can be a little picky with grading veryyyy occasionally but overall if you apply yourself and follow the resources for each module, you'll do really well!
Professor Roeder's class was great. We had one homework assignment a week which consisted of 3-4 long answer questions. As long as you do your own independent research and follow the prompts, you should be fine. But, do make sure you answer every single question in full detail for full points. Overall, great professor and would take him again.
He's an okay teacher, I've read the reviews thinking he is an easy teacher. He replies to emails, which I like. Very few assignments. 7 assignments + final. He's super picky and grades so hard. He wants everything in a specific way. I appreciate him as a teacher though. This Summer class was tough for me.
Prof Roeder's class was pretty straightforward. 1-2 pieces of homework per week with about 4 long-answer questions each. He gives lots of feedback for each assignment. Provides support videos and powerpoints with voiceovers attached, which were easy to follow. Pop up extra credit assignment was a super easy 10 points.
Summer class was great! He really cares about his students. Would recommend!
Clear grading policy, always gave feedback, always provided sources to help with the homework, and his lectures made sense and I actually learned a lot from it. He does like organization though but it shouldn't be hard since he provides a document for his students.
Excellent survey class with a very knowledgeable, kind professor. You'll learn how energy impacts the environment and our future. There's no textbook in this class, so your hw is very accessible, based off of videos, articles, power-points, and some individual research. Overall, the work is very manageable just make sure you meet deadlines!
Had the joy of taking both ES1 & ES4 with Bill this summer. Great experienceexcellent teacher! Asynchronous course design is thoughtful and thought-provoking. His lectures are very thorough and homework engaging. If you do the work, not only will you get an easy A, you'll learn a lot in the process! No other instructor like 'em take Roeder!
Prof. Roeder is really one of the best professor's at De Anza. I took his ES1 course in Fall 2018 and it was life changing!! If you are considering taking this class with Professor Roeder, I highly recommend him. This was the class and professor that made me realize I wanted to major in ES, and now as a USC senior, I can't thank Prof. Roeder enough
Professor Roeder is one of the best professors I have taken. The online assignments were engaging, and the directions were very clear. He gives excellent feedback on assignments and wants his students to succeed. I would recommend this class to anyone who want to learn about the environment!
One of the best professors at De Anza I have taken a class with. Professor Roeder's classes are a joy to take. The organization of the course is very intuitive, and the assignments are engaging and easy to follow. He truly cares about the success of his students. I would highly recommend taking a class with Professor Roeder!
Professor Roeder is one the best professors I have had during my time at De Anza. He truly cares that his students succeed and learn. His passion for Environmental Studies is reflected in his ability to provide engaging, organized course content which is easy to follow. I highly, highly recommend taking his class to anyone.
I appreciated this class for the variety of environmental topics that were touched on. I liked that I was able to listen to lectures when it worked for my schedule. I was impressed by the amount of time that professor Roeder put into feedback on assignments and how quickly he responded to e-mail questions. Be ready to do some critical thinking.
I never thought I would take a class about environmental science but I took this class and chose this professor and didn't regret it! it's a 10 weeks class, with 10 assignments and the grading is very clear. just do the assignments and don't turn them in late!! the teacher answers to the emails in under a few hours which is also amazing
Everything about Will's class is non-traditional in the best way! No exams, just quizzes (where you can get help on), no textbook, no boring lectures, and the final is a group project. All you have to do is show up to class and do the work, and his enthusiasm for the environment will make you hate missing out. He is so kind and supportive :)
I am so happy I got to be Mr. Roeder's student. Not only does he inspire you to be an environmental steward (as he calls it), he makes sure you succeed in the course. He has been so kind as to write a letter of rec for college and I still keep in touch to this day!
8 assignments and a final paper. Got full marks for most of the assignments. Feedbacks were very positive As long as you take time to read his powerpoint and do the assignments with heart you will get a good grade. The only problem in this class is he CAPITALISED all his words in the canvas modules board and it was really hard to read.
Mr. Roeder has been BY FAR the most passionate teacher I have found at De Anza. He is very communicative, clear, and interesting - and funny. The homework is easy if you get started in it the minute he posts it on Canvas, but can be a little heavy if you are one to procrastinate. Very responsive with his emails and has great feedback.
Professor Roeder changed my life. I learned about the carbon footprint of our lives. I had no idea about climate change metrics and my personal contribution to polluting our earth. I felt compelled to make simple changes to my living style in order to stop polluting the earth. It is mind-blowing the wisdom Professor Roeder will share.
Rude professor different with I heard before !
Very easy class, just do the work and you will get an A. 8 assignments, easy to complete. Definitely would recommend taking this class, and I learned a lot!
This ended up being one of the most interesting & useful classes I've ever taken! I was a little unsure at first bc prof writes everything in caps so I thought he was yelling, but he's actually a super chill dude and the workload was actually great (no exams)- not so much that you can't keep up, but enough that it is engaging & you learn a lot.
10 assignments, each worth 40 points besides the final worth 100. Easy class if you put in the effort and answer every question thoroughly with detail. Only lost a couple of points the entire quarter. If you bomb 1 assignment, it'll be difficult to get back up - especially if going for an A. Expect to write lots of paragraphs
I really enjoyed this class. Homework was a lot of essay questions every week, but watch the lectures and you will be fine. One of the assignments was literally to watch The Lorax. I feel more inspired about the natural world after taking this class.
Slayed
Homework was a bunch of essay questions every week based off of the lectures and videos and papers he gives you to read. Relatively easy, but a decent amount of work every week.
I took this class for credits, but at the end was really inspired by what I learned. The class only has weekly assignments with a few paragraphs for clearly worded questions. Class is not test heavy and the midterm was very similar to the weekly assignments. Lenient grader, easy to get an A by showing effort and interest in topics.
I took this class because of my degree requirements, but also for general knowledge and it was an amazing class where the professor teaches you how human actions/ mistakes have had an impact in the environment and also gives you a pretty clear understanding of how some goods from nature such as energy its gotten for human consume. Amazing class!
Avoid this person.
Professor Roeder's passion for environmental protection is truly inspiring. His class has opened my eyes to the urgency of protecting our planet. He provides clear grading instructions and offers excellent feedback, making the learning experience even more valuable. I'm grateful for the opportunity to take his class.
Great professor! Take his class! His lectures are amazing. Expect a few hours of homework each week. He even offered extra credit in the first week. He's very caring. I highly recommend it to those who have a passion for environmental studies
The professor was very clear with the what he expected from assignments and gave helpful feedback. Responds to any questions very quickly too. As long as you are thorough with the assignments, you will likely pass. Great professor!
It seems people have gotten easy professor mixed up with good professor. He only uploads other peoples youtube videos, only 3-4 videos he created himself out of close to 50 videos we watched. His assignments are super easy to fake as I got 100% on pretty much every assignment by doing it a few hours before the due date.
I took this class for credit but I ended up liking the assignments every week. They are very few questions and understandable. The professor was upfront with everyone and clear. I learned a lot and it has made me take a look on environment issues. I will tell you that he does not accept late assignments and make sure to read all the questions.
I took this class after not attending school for many years and let alone, done any online classes before. I also didn't realize that it was accelerated… but even as a working professional working full time, this class was still doable. Assignments are due at 5PM and graded by next day. Lots of critical thinking but you learn so much.
Previously took his ES001 class back in Fall of 2024, & just finished his ES004 class this week. All I can say is TAKE HIM. This class is soooo beneficial and I believe everybody should be educated on this subject. This class is very doable as long as you put in the effort. Prof. Roeder if you are seeing this, pls teach another transferable course.
I will just say this off the bat since I know it will benefit him. If you are looking to cheat, dont take him. If you are looking for an A but willing to put in effort, then he is the professor for you. As long as you DO YOUR WORK and follow the instructions, you will do fine. Emphasis on the dont cheat though; he will know.
Great professor. Currently in the class towards end. Clear expectations. Seems like you get what you put in. Very passionate about the subject. Answers questions. Has a wealth of knowledge. Doesn't over complicate the online class thing. One large assignment a week. Tedious but it's how you get through the material and get it into your head.
Summer session, no exams and learned through weekly assignments. Start assignment(s) the day they are assigned instead of near the due date since spending a few hours per week is required.
A good professor who loves his subject, but be ready for lots of homework. I worked on this class and got an A+
No tests but has a kinda long hw assignment every week so just lock in on the hw and you'll get an A. Other than that easy ish class, gives extra credit opportunities and a nice guy
Professor Bill Roeder is a passionate and engaging professor. I took his accelerated 8-week fall course. There were no real exams, only a weekly written assignment and a similarly formatted final assignment. His passion shows through his assignments. They are made in a way to keep you engaged. Take his class if you want to learn. It's not hard.
