He is a very bad teacher. When you ask questions he just answers with a question back, usually not helping you at all. He complains about his students and seems like he's not there to teach or help you. I would not take his class, especially if you don't want to drop your GPA
Dr. Sander's was a good professor. He knows what he is talking about and can teach it well to the class. He can sometimes be confusing or go too fast through the powerpoints, but overall he is just fine.
Dr. Sanders is a very thorough prof. He was always available long after office hours before our tests. He is excellent at making analogies which made the material more memorable and understandable. He is challenging but he is extremely commited to his students. I would definitely reccommend him to students truly interested in learning.
He tends to over complicate the material. He is not a bad teacher by any means, he just doesn't answer questions thoroughly.
He was fine during class and had some funny pictures and stuff on his power points, but he moved too fast quite often. I went to his office hours a few times, but I learned nothing because he would act irritated that I was there and would treat me like an idiot and say, "How can you not know this?" and give me a lot of loud sighs. RUDE!!
run away now! he makes it much harder than he needs too and other teachers cant help u cause he goes into details they dont and is annoying in office hours cause he goes all around the topic and does not hit on you question.
Do not take this class unless you want to end up re-taking it. I had Gunnels and Sanders together and the only reason that I passed was because of Gunnels. Sanders dances around your questions and is no help what so ever. He says that the study guides help you but they don't. He makes everything so much more complicating than it has to be.
Worst teacher ever!!! Don't take him unless you want to fail
Sanders had the clearest test questions and the only reason people thought that his teaching was bad is because he had the two longer and harder sections to teach
Biology its just a hard class. In every class you get, half of the class will drop out. You have to work you tail off. If you do, you can get a B. Sanders really wants you to do well. I highly recommend going to his office hours. He had the two hardest units of the course so everyone thinks that he he harder. I probably won't take him again though.
Do Not Take Him!! His lecture is full of information that doesn't help. Basically you have to rely on the book and if that doesn't help then just rely on luck. The average for the class was a 49%. We started out with 45 kids in the class and now were at 25. Ohh and when you ask questions he'll make you feel really stupid for asking.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF! he makes no sense, his tests are poorly worded and not easy. rambles about irrelevant info.
Nice powerpoints, great office hours. The only thing is that he does not hold your hand on the test and feed you answers.
He was a weird guy. If you ask a question, he'll just ask you a bunch of other questions. He was surprised when I answered them right, so that is your indication of his general attitude. Good lectures though, it's not really that hard. A laptop would be your best bet if you type faster than you write because sometimes he speeds through it.
I still do not understand the soul patch but whatever... The man is nice if you have a disability, other than that he thinks that you are an incompetent imbosol if you do not understand something. He also seems to feel that we are all doomed. The first day of class he told us that 25% would fail, and 20% would drop the course. Inspiring huh?
His powerpoints are creative and you can tell he is REALLY passionate about plants (a little nutty if you ask me). But if you ask him a question, or have any sort of problem at all he does not help. He is extremely rude when answering student's questions. I DON'T recommend him if you are a student who might even think about asking for clarification
He is a Botanist and is obsessed with water!! You ask him a question and he starts explaining the whole thing and then asks you the same question that you originally asked him. His online quizzes are timed and you can't skip any questions without getting them wrong. It sucks!!
Sanders was the greater of two evils and just like Palmtag his idea of help was telling us in class to meet him in office hours. After I dropped this class I found out that my class was the worst class on campus with 29 F's and 14 D's out of an 80 person class! This was half way through the course. If you want to pass biology, avoid this teacher!
I had no problem with Sanders, but when he was teaching with Palmtag, they had very contrasting teaching styles. There is no getting around a difficult Biology class. If you aren't willing to spend time learning the material, you shouldn't take the class as this does require a load of studying the material.

Even though I failed the course a couple years ago, thought it would be appropriate to warn. The first time I took Biology, I had Gunnels and Sanders. Gunnels being the better half. The first sign of trouble? Getting an email from a fellow student asking me to sign a petition to have Sanders removed. Some understand him, but I believe most don't.
Our class learned so much more than any other bio classes. He goes into more depth on most topics. His test question are complex, but all come from his lectures and study guides. You need to read, go to class and study. I am even more prepared for chem because of his class. Not rude to students ever, unless you aren't respectful of him. Had no prob
Okay, for those students who say they hate him, it's because they aren't willing to put the time and effort. He makes you UNDERSTAND the concept. And not just spew out random facts you have memorized. You need to do the study questions. It's a hard class for sure. But it's possible to pass it! Don't be lazy and actually learn. It will be worth it.
Although some might disagree, I found his style of teaching VERY difficult to comprehend. The material itself is really not that challenging. Even with studying at least 2 hours a night, I was still forced to drop the class.. Or I most likely would have failed. Not a fan of Sanders AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My suggestion is, if you want to get anything out of bio, don't take it with this professor. We were on ch5 while all the other classes were on ch1..he does not teach, at all. He reads you the powerpoint and talks for the entire 3 hours. Questions just lead to him rambling on and on and never answering or clarifying anything for the student.
Do not take him. You will struggle the entire way and not pass. Waste of time.
I don't see why everyone thinks he is a bad teacher. I learned a lot in this class which is why we go to college isn't it? He was willing to answer any question I had and knows what he is talking about. If you just pay attention during the lectures and take good notes plus take the time to actually study them you will do fine.
Sanders is extremely helpful and a really good teacher! He explains the material in many ways for people to understand and is willing to help anyone. People don't like him just cause his class is hard! The exams are really hard and you have to understand everything, not just know it. Try your best. Biology is hard but you can get an A!
Sanders is terrible. He is an upper level professor trying to teach bio 1. If you do not go to office hours then he does not like you. I went once and all he did was degrade me. If you ask questions in class he gets mad and rolls his eyes. He pretty much told me I was stupid in class. I used to love biology.
He helps you if you go to his office hours. Other then that his class is so hard. Hardest out of all the Bio teachers. Would not recommend this teacher. He is extremely smart but teaches his class like you already know what he is talking about. I use to love Biology before I met him
Biology is a challenging class to begin with. That being said, Sanders is very smart and he sometimes explains things in a way that's hard for students to understand. He is good about helping you, but he uses questions to get you thinking critically and this only confuses if you don't understand the concepts. Risky choice, proceed with caution!
This course is designed to weed out the wanna-be science majors. All professors teaching Bio I have a high fail rate. Sanders offers major help in office hours. He expects you to do your part. No regurgitating answers for tests, you must know your stuff. He taught so well I was able to tutor Bio I after his course. HE LOVES LICHENS!
someone said it best: he is a higher level prfsr teacher bio 101. I think he actually teaches, unlike some of the others. For interested students only. I got an A, only 2-4 hours of study for each exam. I am a srt8 A student, though.
Professor Sanders is an awesome (upper level) teacher. As long as you take notes on his slides and review them before the quizzes, you should do well. Going to his office hours, asking/answering a lot of questions in class, and getting on his good side help. He and I are good friends now, and I hope to have him again sometime.
Sanders is a very knowledgeable professor however if you don't enjoy biology do not take his class. Very hard and class material is a lot! Tutoring will be your best friend. Quizzes are given every weekend and are a lot easier than exams. Exams count for a majority of your grade and are long and tedious. Must be very knowledgeable of all material.
Sanders is a great professor, plain and simple. If you study often and focus in class (I would recommend taking notes on your laptop if available) You will do great. He is wonderful during office hours and is always available to make appointments. Highly recommended
An absolutely great class. You never forget what he teaches. Phenominal amount of knowledge. Explains from different perpectives. A fun class!!
Worst professor I have ever had! Acts like student should know the material already and if you have any questions he will just rephrase it and expect you to know it. Exams are difficult and he doesnt give study guides. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Terrible professor. Super intelligent, but does not explain in a way that is easy to grasp the hard material. If you ask for help on the side, he'll complicate everything even more. Also very dry and monotone. We started with 62 students and had 28 by the 3rd exam. Pretty sure he passed everyone left with a C just so he wouldn't get fired.
He is a really smart man but not a good teacher. Not good at explaining things and is intimidating to ask questions to. Hard quizzes and impossible tests. I was studying all the time and the best I did on a test was a 75. I would not recommend taking his class.
Professor Sanders is a great professor. For the people who said otherwise, maybe they should not be a science major. Although there is a lot of material to cover, he explains each subject thoroughly and very clearly. He does the best job that he can. The tests cover every detail that he teaches you, but in the end, you will be able to tutor bio!
I really liked Sanders. He is incredibly smart! Biology is not an easy class, but he does his absolute best to make sure that you understand the material. His study questions help a lot! Also going to his office hours are helpful. He's tough, but definitely fair. I would recommend him 100% You have to be willing to put in the effort it takes.
Sanders is precise and thorough; many professors glaze over the finer details but Sanders explains WHY the finer details are there at all. If you are a detail oriented conceptual learner, he's one of the best professors to take for Bio 1.
Sanders is a great professor for bio! He explains it in such a way to make you understand why it is the way it is. He works off ppt which you can print off to help you with the quizzes. & also gives you study guides before the test. Tests make up most of your grade 75%. Ive found that using your book is most helpful & going to his office hours.
The tests are somewhat hard but that's only if you don't fully grasp the material. Sanders is really helpful, his power points are easy to understand, he gives out study guides, and he is always willing to help at office hours. Always keep up on the study questions and keep them to refer back to. No extra credit so keep up. Overall a great class!
Sanders is the best teacher I've ever had. Take his class if you really want to learn this stuff. I now know how the world operates. Also teaches one chapter of chemistry that helps you alot in understanding the processes in biology. Do well on the exams, there are 4 overall. Pay attention in class and you wont even have to study.I got A,B on exams
I failed the first time with a different professor. class requires a lot of work. He cares about all of his students and wants you to succeed. His exams and quizzes are tough but he just wants you to learn. I learned so much and he is a great professor. Use power points to study. Bio is tough with any professor. I got a 71% and he gave me a C+
Before this class, my GPA was 3.8. By the third test, the average grade of the class was 52. Sanders is an impossible teacher!
Took Sanders with the reviews beside, and glad I did. Sanders is a very social teacher that really is very proud and confident whilst teaching biology. If you're a non science major do not take this with sanders - he's more thorough. He will challenge you, but that's half the part of learning - don't take it offensively.
He is a great professor and holds regular office hours and extra if asked. If you pay attention and read the book and study you will pass. If you think you're going to be able to slack off and pass, don't take this class because you get the grade you work for. He is a hilarious guy who has lots of jokes. advice: GO TO OFFICE HOURS
Great professor. Tends towards being too thorough with the material rather than just skimming over it and expecting you to learn it yourself. Lots of extra office hours if thats your kind of thing. If you go to class you should have no problem passing easily.
This teach definitely has a sense of humor but can be very intimidating to ask questions. Unlike most teachers, he cares that you actually UNDERSTAND and can APPLY the material you learn to specific situations... which is what his tests and quizzes are all about.
I dropped the class after the first test, I was a bio major in hopes of becoming a zoologist... I am now a hospitality major. Sanders would turn you down when asked for help, and didn't make lectures very clear. I would recommend many other professors over him.
I do not recommend him AT ALL. He teaches as if you should already know the material before coming to any of his classes. His exams are very hard and a lot of people drop his class. I wish someone told me about him before I took his class because I struggled a lot and eventually had to drop it. He is not the easiest person to talk to.
The material is tough and exams (4 plus the final) make up 75% of your grade. If you don't attend class, you will have a hard time with the material (unless your some kind of bio genius). There are regular office hours and SI sessions to help you understand the material. NOT AN EASY CLASS, but passable when you put in reasonable effort
If you are looking for an easy class, I do not recommend this one. With that being said, Professor Sanders is an extremely intelligent professor and does a beyond thorough job explaining the material. He adds in funny comments and pictures to make the material easier to retain. I would deff. retake him again!
Dr. Sanders knows his material and is enthusiastic about plants. The courses he teach is very tough, and he is thorough, but if you study well you can achieve a good grade. Utilize office hours and he is very helpful.
Whenever you ask for help he says "well we went over this" and kind of gets annoyed that you don't understand. His talks way too much for me to absorb any information and there is no flow in his way of teaching, its really hard to follow.
Trick questions. Exams are based off of the way he wants you to word it. Explanations and outside resources are provided, but definitely makes you jump through hoops to pass.
Took him my first semester for Bio 1 and it was a great experience. He was the first one to spark my interest in science. I did't find the class too difficult, I just took notes and paid attention to what he said. Every concept he explained was crystal clear. I would definitely recommend him. Can't wait to take him for The Lives of Plants and Algae
Gives great lectures and gives you so many extra resources to help study. He is very good at explaining all the concepts and the in-class assignments help your grade. Only bad thing is that his test are very hard and you will need to spend a lot of time studying. Very helpful during office hours. Has alot of online quizzes. Not an easy A class.
He is HORRIBLE, he is very smart and knows so much therefore he acts like his students should already know what he is talking about, BUT WE DON'T. He will show you all these molecules and spend 30 mins talking about it and then say "but I don't expect you to know this" also his test are ridiculously hard and have unnecessary wording. BAD BAD BAD
He's so unclear and will make you write down stuff you don't need to know. You never know what will be on the test and his wording for the test are much more complicated than they need to be. You have 1-2 quizzes every night after the lecture and they are timed and super hard. He is NOT approachable. I would NOT recommend him to anyone.
Hard class but he really knows what he is talking about. Go to class, pay attention to the lectures, and study A LOT. He may not seem helpful in class but he is in office hours. He does not give study guides or hints like other professors do, and his exams are harder. However, he bumped most of the classes grades up by a a few points at the end
Dr. Sanders is a very smart man, and he expects his students to be on the level he is when it is just a Biology 1 course. Most of us come into this class as freshman not having Biology in our brains since we were 14. This class is basically based off of the 5 exams you take, and they are the most TRICKY and CONFUSING questions. Not recommended.
I'm a junior now but Sanders has been my all time favorite and the easiest science professor for me. No homework, easy inclass assignments that he gives answers to. Never used textbook. His powerpoints are what you'll learn from. I got an A- and didn't even need to study because I payed attention in class. But make sure you understand the chapters.
He's an excellent professor. He makes the concepts relatively easy to understand, and is very helpful during office hours. If you understand the PowerPoint and the study questions, you should do very well on the test.
For an elective course this was pretty tough. Was not expecting the exams to be prepared the way they were. There is a HUGE emphasis on labs and they make up the practical portion of the exam, so if you miss a lab your going to miss out on that info for the exam.
Lots of quizzes and go to office hours!
This Course is very difficult. If you do not read the textbook or the lab manual, you will be lost. If you do not show up for class, you won't understand the power points, as it's mostly pictures and he explains it further. He is a very condescending person and people don't like to answer his questions in class. He makes you feel stupid.
Dr. Sanders is a great teacher. Biology can be one of the hardest classes that you may take, but he helps you out a lot. His lectures are very clear, he is engaging, very funny, and loves to see you ask questions 101 to succeed. If you're putting in the effort for his class and seeing him in his office hours, you'll do great.
He begins the class telling you that you need to study, and a lot. It was intimidating, but he was honest. If you put the time in, you will get the grade you deserve. Didn't use the book much, but def used the lab book. I recommend this class- even though it is hard, it will push you to be a better student and you will learn a LOT!!!
Look Sanders is a very smart professor but he doesnt know how to teach. Lectures are heavy, makes you feel dumb for asking a question, & gives quizzes after every lecture and lab. Dont take him if you arent good at bio. Youll have to study a lot and go to a lot of si sessions and office hours. he is not the best. Be prepared if u take the class
He is great. Once you go to office hours and ask him some questions he'all explain everything perfectly and make it easy to understand.
He's the hardest bio 1 professor but if you take notes on power point AND what he says and do the study questions, which make sure you know how to apply what you learn which is critical for his tests/ quizzes, you'll be fine. He gets overwhelmed with amount of people in his classes so if you have a question write it down and ask DURING OFFICE HOURS
Everyone hates on Sanders, but honestly I learned a lot from this class. His tests are extremely difficult, but he's a smart guy. He is intimidating, I would ask questions and sometimes feel dumb for asking. However, I left his class with a B, and now being in BSC1011, I remember a ton from his lectures. What he teaches sticks with you.
Dr. Sanders is a great teacher and knows a lot about plants and algae. If you're worried about his teaching, don't. He'll make the same point over and over again to engrain it into your head. If you pay attention and stay on top of the material, getting an A is possible. I would recommend Dr. Sanders's Plants and Algae course if you're not lazy.
Dr. Sanders is a very tough professor. He grades very harshly and often doesn't believe that you study hard enough. However, he is extremely knowledgable with plants and algae and is very helpful in office hours. The extensive lab portion of the class is the hardest part of the exams and if you don't participate, you will not pass.
I believe that Dr. Sanders was a great choice for me to take Bio 1 with! He knows his stuff and he goes into great detail with the material covered. Everything that he taught in lecture was on the exams so make sure to take good notes. The only downside to Dr. Sanders is that he can be a little intimidating when you have to ask a question sometimes
If you want to learn biology, chemistry, and microbiology all in one then this is the class for you. Prof. Sanders is one of the hardest professors I have had in my life. It's just excess.... from his long lectures to his online quizzes every week, to his long tests, this class demands way too much for general Biology 1. Avoid this professor!!!
AWFUL. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. he doesn't give a crap about his students and is the worst teacher I've ever had in my life.
I have to have a Bio credit for my major, and by the looks of it I am about to take an L in this class. I have never gotten a grade lower than a B in any class before. The way he words his tests/quizzes are so different from the way that he talks, which will completely throw you off. Tough online quizzes after each class. Tests are even worse. Run.
Hard class in general but GREAT professor. Bio 1 is not easy. Attend office hours, ask questions in class and during lab. He cares about his students, especially those who make an effort to understand and those who want to learn. STUDY STUDY STUDY and you'll do great.
Tough class that you WILL need to put in the time to study for but not impossible to do well in (I had an A until the very end which was on me). Sanders can be intimidating in class but he is very nice&helpful during office hours, just wants you to do well. He reiterates topics when necessary which helps and in general is pretty good @ teaching Bio
This class is really hard. STUDY AND GO TO CLASS! If you go to Sanders' office hours, he'll not only answer your questions, but lead the discussion in a way that brings up the topics that are on the tests and quizzes. Since you cared to take a little extra time to come to his office hours, he'll give you a mini, one-on-one review.
IF YOU ARE NOT A SCIENCE MAJOR DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! No, seriously this is the worst class I have ever taken. Terrible at explaining the material, tells you not to worry about something during lecture and it ends up on the test. I get Bio is hard, but he makes it unnecessarily harder. Have to retake in summer. Worst professor EVER.
WORST PROF EVER. he belittles his students every chance he gets. when you ask him to explain something to you he will simply tell you he can't explain that. things will appear on the exams that he has never mentioned. overall bad teacher for this course. I strongly advise you find a different professor if you want to pass this class.
You will most likely either drop out of this class or fail it if you do poorly on just the first test. It's a mess from there. He is an awful teacher that puts 5-6 chapters into one test and packs way too much into each lecture. He makes you feel like an idiot if you ask hum a simple question, and he'll most likely get mad at you.
Terrible educator. Will make you feel dumb if you do not fully understand one thing. Often blabs for 10 minutes just to say "but you don't need to know that" at the end. If you are in his class you better study like crazy. I studied and still failed out. Halfway through the semester 60% of the class will already have failed out. Terrible educator.
A lot of people were telling me how hard this professor was and honestly his tests are hard because they require you to master the concepts simply memorizing things won't help you, you truly have to know the material inside and out if you want an A. Do his study questions that he has. This class was fun though. Im bummed out that i got a B plus :(
Overall a good teacher. He wants you to understand the material and likes when you show interest in the course. Go to office hours, do the study questions, and go to SI. It's a tough class but definitely passable if you put in the effort!
Dr. Sanders has the reputation for being a very difficult biology professor. However, he really tries to teach his students and push them to understand the information. The tests are "difficult" if you do not put in the time to answer each of the study questions. But overall, Sanders is a great professor and his class is manageable.
I was told by a friend that he was terrible. Once classes started I realized it was only because she didnt pay attention. I was very thankful I had him because hes not afraid to explain. As long as you ask good, relevant questions he will make sure to clear things up. Hes tough and you have your work cut out, but overall hes a great instructor!
This class and professor were terrible to me. No matter how many hours I studied for the tests I never did well, and I always went to class. Best I got on a test was a 35. Tough grader and makes you feel stupid if you don't understand something in class. Had to withdraw along with easily 1/3 of the class. Would never recommend this prof.
He made me fall in love with Biology. He definitely knows what he's talking about and knows how to explain each subject. I had a great time in his class. Do the practice questions, and you'll do great in this class. He'll help you out if he sees you struggling even though you've been putting a lot effort in his class. A great professor!
Hes honestly amazing. He really makes sure you MASTER the concept not just memorising. He wont hold your hand like most freshmans are use to thats why he's seen as hard. He will help if YOU make effort. Do his study questions and STUDY THEM. Did that every time and lowest test grade was a 93 and I mastered A LOT. You wanna learn, take him.
If you can not stand a long lecture DO NOT take this class. On days there is not a lab he will lecture the whole 2 and a half hours. The test has nothing to do with the powerpoints or notes, he does not emphasize enough the importance of the study questions. That is all the tests are based on. Give a lot info excess info you do not need.
The hardest professor I have ever had. He will do a 3 hour long lecture and give a very short amount of time to do that labs. The quizzes are mostly based on the labs and without proper time to complete the labs the quizzes are very hard. He expects for you to understand all the material without having to know any prior knowledge.
He was the worst professor I have ever had. He makes you feel stupid when you ask a question. I went to his office hours and came back to class feeling more confused. Your grade will rely on the tests rather than any other homework (including the quizzes that are assigned every weekend). If you are a bad test taker I recommend a different professor
Hardest teacher I've ever had. LOVES to ramble about stuff for 20 minutes then says "you wont need to know that". Lectures are god awful and makes it hard for students to grasp the topics. Crams in 6 chapters worth of material in exams. 1st test I got a 37, I went to office hours and he told me to drop the class. would not recommend
Great if you love bio. He gives detailed lectures off of powerpoints that are easy to take notes on, this worked great for me and I never had to read the textbook. His office hours were always really helpful. Intimidating at first but if you actually care about learning Bio 101 this is probably the best option. Tests are a lil hard but 100% fair.
This was a rough class for me because I could barely pay attention in his 3 hour long lectures but he's definitely really nice. He does try to make you feel dumb but that's just to make you more confident. He would come up to my table and help my friend and I individual and he actually cares. Take the quizzes seriously and DO the study questions.
Honestly if you really put the work in, an A is not too hard. I rarely paid attention in lectures but would do cram sessions an hour before exams and I got mostly B's. You will have to work for your grade so unless you need this class for a science major, do not take it. Be prepared and come to class ready to learn if you want to pass.
He is very rude and makes you not want to raise your hand and answer a question. If you get his question wrong, he will call you out in front of the class and embarrasses you. He does the same thing in-office hours. If you're not understanding the concepts he is going to be rude and get annoyed that you don't understand.
Sanders actually was a really great teacher. I wouldn't take him if you aren't a bio major tho. I never used the textbook I rented, use the STUDY QUESTIONS for quizzes and exams, everything you need to know is on there. Office hours are really helpful as well. He does really want to see you succeed in his class you just have to put in the effort.
The absolute worst professor I ever had the misfortune of having. If you aren't a Bio major don't take his class. During office hours he was very condescending and bragged about the number of students who withdraw. Isn't interested in helping you do better. Don't take him.
I had him for Bio 1 and was able to receive an A by committing a lot (a lot)! of time to doing his study questions. Botany was an incredible class and Dr. Sanders is incredibly knowledgeable and it is evident that he wants to pass that knowledge onto his students.
Overall negative experience with his course. Something I did not like was how he CLEARLY did not like non-stem or anyone outside of a science major in the course. When he found out I was an arts major in-office hours he tried hinting at dropping his course. What if I wanted to TRY passing biology? But he just basically drove me away from staying.
Dr. Sanders is a tough professor who is passionate about his line of work. He holds his students to the highest expectations so if you want to succeed you need to be prepared to meet those expectation. Multiple quizzes weekly, long lectures and labs, and difficult tests all make this class a major time commitment. Studying is a must from day 1.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AGAIN UNLESS YOU'RE GOOD AT BIO! He rushes the lab, he doesn't explain the material very well. He talks in circles and makes the material more complicated then it should be. I understand Bio is a rigorous course but I learned more from the Amoeba sisters video on youtube. I would take anyone but him for bio.
It is true that he favors bio majors, and does not have a lot of patience, but he does want his students to succeed. I earned an A in the class not because he is an amazing professor but because he dedicated a lot of time for this class. The best advice I can give you is that when you ask for help do not take what he says to heart. would takeagain
Dedicated a LOT of time to this course outside of class but still only got a B. Mostly As on exams tho. DO HIS STUDY QUESTIONS & GO TO OFFICE HRS! that is the only way to succeed. He is very rude at first but nice when u get to know him tbh. He def loves teaching and bio itself. Was def a very difficult class. take him to get a real understanding.
I would study probably about 50 hours each test and still failed every one. Despite knowing the material, the tests were laid out very difficult and confusing. Take anyone but him.
As long as you participate in class, do your own homework, and answer the study questions provided by the professor, you will do very well in this class. Your test grades will be a direct reflection of your effort.
While sanders isn't necessarily mean, he does make the class VERY difficult, he spends little to no time explaining the topics and just skips through most, even though they are in the test. He does make it very clear that it is a very difficult class so that was my fault, but this was easily the hardest course I have ever attempted.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! He skips through 80% of the thousand slide lecture when we need to know every single slide. The tests are worth 75% of your grade and 50% of the questions are about the lab that you do in class. However, HE DOESN'T DO LABS. He lectures for the entire three hours. The majority of the students dropped TAKE ANYONE BUT HIM.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!! The worst professor you could ever have. Does not provide students with adequate study materials like the other bio teachers. Lectures are 2 hours long with little to no explanation, in fact makes it more complicated than it actually is. Makes you feel embarrassed for not understanding and asking questions.
2+ quizzes a week. 2 1/2 hr lectures. Skips through lab. Barely explains topics. Only reviews during office hours. You can tell he is really passionate about biology and is happy when students succeed, its just rare. Most ppl fail. DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS U HAVE AN AMAZING BACKGROUND IN BIO.
do yourself a solid and take anyone but him unless you want to fail
Dont recommend. Half the class dropped by the 2nd test. Class test average across all 5 tests was a 60.8 and tests are worth 75% of your grade, very few A's were earned in the class. After talking to students in different bio classes, it is clear he is the hardest. Do not take him, you will work twice as hard as your peers for the same credits.
Dr. Sanders is a very nice man. Despite this, his class is incomprehensible. He overcomplicates the content. I dedicated my time to studying. I used HIS materials to prep. 10/12 hours per week, never scored higher than a 63. Not only did it trash my GPA, I changed my major because of this class. If you are a science geek, you might have a chance.
Worst class I've ever taken. Gen Bio 1 is hard as is, but the awful professor does not help. Studied HARD for hours for the tests and still didn't pass a single one. He overcomplicates his lectures and it's very hard to ask him questions. Final grade was based on 75% tests, 20% quizzes, and 5% in class assignments. He does not care for his students
One of the biggest complications I had with this class was that there was hardly any study material other than the super disorganized slides/study questions that take forever. The professor is also rude at times. The study questions are your best bet for passing. You can't learn in the class alone, you need supplemental outside help to pass.
Taking him right now and I didn't think his class would be as bad as the reviews say.....it's bad. Not even halfway through the semester and it's a struggle. Overcomplicates everything and if you ask him a question during class he makes you feel silly.
DO NOT TAKE. He makes his own explanations way harder than they have to be. Can only go over your missed questions during office hours. Expecting others to know the answers and responding condescendingly to them if they answer correctly is not fair. Just an example that they need to hire more actual teachers rather than researchers.
Horrible grading criteria. 80% tests and 20% final exam. Requires so much studying and pressure due to grades being solely on exams
Worst professor ever. VERY test heavy, no homework, no extra credit, no rounding, no dropping tests grades. Would not recommend, take literally anyone else.
Says 10/15 hrs of study required per week, make that 30 since the lectures are very confusing, he uses lots of jargon, most people without bio background will not understand. He will use one word on the slide and when talking call it another name. The material itself is not hard, I say take little notes in lecture and self study.
Be prepared to sit through 3 hours of him just yapping away reading slide shows, he does require a text book, THAT YOU WILL NOT USE, and a lab text book that you use occasionally, His class is set up so that you have NO work besides a quiz or 3 every week and about 4 exams which are 75% of your grade, Needs more work to understand the material
Pay attention to the lectures and you'll be just fine. He does a good job of explaining concepts, but it's very easy to get lost if you are behind in the material. Stay on top of things, do well on the open-book quizzes, and you'll be just fine.
Great professor! I took him for general bio 1 with lab, and he explained all of the concepts very thoroughly. If you pay attention to the lab and know what you're doing on the open-book quizzes, you'll be just fine in this class.
F this guy,
Professor Sanders is an excellent teacher. It's apparent that he cares deeply about the subject, and makes the class as understandable as possible. This class is difficult, but I think most of the bad reviews for him are because of the difficulty of the class, not him as a professor. I'd recommend this class for all science majors.
Not a horrible teacher but not the best. Sometimes he comes off rude with his tone when answering questions he expects you to know, and he talks a lot, but he has his comedic moments. If you come to class having read the material the night before, you'll pass.
Professor Sanders makes this class unnecessarily difficult. Lectures are disorganized and he's not helpful when you ask questions. I'd recommend using unstuck AI and other outside resources to pass this course.
do not recommend! He makes you feel extremely stupid when trying to ask/answer questions. Personally, I have came to the point of crying in frustration because there is no exam prep. Probably why Im not passing, because all he does is lecture then you're on your own. Lectures are lengthy and unorganized (too much and very overstimulating).
FINAL EXAM WILL START AT 8:15 PM, that is how much he cares about his students.
The worst, crying my eyes out.
His lectures are unclear and jumbled, and he is demeaning. It feels like he wants to fail you, and he does not know what the point of being a teacher is.
BSC1010C is structured like AP Bio. His class is lecture based, though he doesn't give out too much homework only a few online quizzes per week. The only way to learn the material is through note-taking. If you don't learn well through lectures and taking notes I don't recommend taking him. (He can be obliviously condescending, but he's harmless)
I don't recommend him. I studied for 10+ hours a week, worked on the study guides and took the quizzes which I'd get 100's on and then I'd get to the tests and barely pass. He makes the Exams so much more complicated than they need to be. It feels like he wants you to fail. Best way to describe him is abrasive and demeaning when you ask questions.
No matter how much you study his exams are impossible. The average for our final exam was a 47.5%. The average for the other exams were all below a 60%. He doesn't treat his students with respect.
My dad had cancer and passed during the semester. This prof gave extensions but was cold and dismissive. He guilt-tripped me for helping my dad instead of attending lectures. Even while I was passing, he told me to drop the class and made false claims repeatedly. I shut down toward the end and failed. No one deserves to be treated like this.
Don't expect any compassion from this professor. My friend was going through a rough time and he was nothing but cold to her.
