The guy is a nut--absolutley crazy, but half of the tests are take home and the rest are open book. If you don't mind his wierd sense of humor definately an easy A.
he is OK.I got B+.Just listen in the class and you'll be good
Plenty of reading. Tests/quizzes based on notes and book. Some lectures were just read out of the book. Cool personality.
Different type of guy...this is the best job for him ( he is a born philosopher). He is managable , makes you work a little, but I was willing to learn and I got a B+! He is cooky cool too. Final was open notes. He mads me think..really enjoyed the experience!
Do not fear this class. Prof. Smith makes it fun and interesting.
great philosopher, very open-minded, knows his stuff. the key to the class is taking good notes.
Great professor! Interesting class. Make sure you take good notes and participate!
No comments! Terrible professor
He is a good teacher, very clear, you have to think alot to get through his class.
Professor Smith is a great, interesting Professor. The exams are VERY hard and you NEED to take notes during class - most of his tests are based on his lecture. The book helps alot but note taking is vital to pass. You have to email him for assistance and he takes the time to email back, he is very eager to help students. Exams are tough--study
This teacher rambles alot first we're talkin about god the next thing its about his son then its about his disease. He does give the study sheets beforehand but that would only get you a B- on the test cause he expects alot out of it and if you dont get the topic thats just too bad. Not the best teacher.
interesting professor, very animated about his subject, a little cynical about religion it that doesnt bother you, should be no problem, take notes and STUDY
Very intense, fun guy. Knows his stuff, and has an open mind to student's opinions. Lots of tangents, but they're fun. 3 Open-book exams...a good bit of reading. Call would be more useful is used more real-world case studies
Prof. Smith knows the material very well and makes learning it interesting. He will take the time to provide help if needed. He is very fair in his expectations, but you must put in effort and think through your responses on open ended test questions. You will not get by on bs.
HE IS A HORRIBLE TEACHER. HE ONLY SEES IN BLACK AND WHITE. THE TESTS ARE HARD AND HE IS AN EXTREMELY HARD GRADER. HE DOESNT CARE IF YOU DONT GET THE MATERIAL. HES INTERESTED IN THE MATERIAL AND KNOWS ALOT ABOUT IT BUT WHO CARES ABOUT PHILOSOPHY. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROFFESSOR. HES WEIRD AND DOESNT CARE ABOUT ANYONES OPINIONS BUT HIS OWN!
He is a very wierd guy..half of the tests are take home and half are in class..everything is open book but u must read and understand the text to pass any of the tests..even the take home tests are hard
One of the most animated, engaging teachers I've ever had. Loves his subject. Do the work, earn the grade!
I loved this class! Prior to his class, I had no interest in business ethics or philosophy. He deffinately changed that. He really made me think about business and life in a different way. Do the reading and participate in class and you cant lose. Gives 3 tests (all open book) and drops the lowest score. I didnt even have to take the final!!
Very sarcastic and funny teacher. Animated, knows his stuff. Subject is uninteresting but his tangents (always has funny stories) make it bearable. He SPELLS the answers out for you, and even gives the exam questions ahead of time. Just read the parts of the book he asks you to and ASK if you dont understand something. He'll spell it out AGAIN
This man KNOWS what he's talking about. To understand you must have an open mind and he's very helpful explaining the readings! Tests are usually take home essays and the answers are right in the notes. Anyone who suggest he's a bad teacher probably did poorly.
funny teacher but hard to understand what the hell goes on in that book!!!
He knows the material well so he can explain the book, which is really hard to understand. His grading policy sucks. An A is 100, which is impossible to maintain, so if you get a high grade like 94, you will only get an A-. His teaching is ok, but his tests are harder than what he taught. He is closed minded b/c all this philosophy made him atheist
He's ok. I disliked him more than I liked him. He talks to much about nothing but still manages to give notes. The test are okay, but sometimes the notes aren't enough. No written homework, just LOTS of HARD reading. Grading policy sucks. Close minded. Take his class if there's no more room in other PHL 130 classes. Don't recmomend him as #1 choice
Grades right from the book. Like the previous comment stated is that it will be very hard to get an A. Do well on the take home tests and there shouldn't be too much of a problem.
great professor. Nice guy. Serious about the work and hates when nobody participates or uses a cell phone. Big on homeworks from the book and tests/quizzes are easy, open book. Got a 56 on final and got a b+ in the class.
This guy is the man!!He is a funny guy and easy to pass. All you have to do is the homowork quizzes and your fine.
This guy is the best philosophy teacher in the school i took his philosophy 101 class and now im taking his ethics class he is a great teacher and loves what he does
he knows the subject well n explained very clearly, I personly think the homework are more difficult than the exams,n each of them is counting towards ur grade. every exam is open book,so u really gotta read thro each chapter n carefully.
Very funny
very good teacher. the first day of class he will try to scare u but he is really funny.
Great professor! Just took the class to fill credits and it is now my minor.
i guess you can say he knows his stuff, but if you are having trouble in the class dont expect him to help because he wont. his test are straight from the notes..so i suggest u take a lot.
He is very smart and doesn't do a bad job at keeping the material interesting. I had him once a week for 3 hours, i suggest you come to class on time and take lots of notes! i wrote down everything that he said and used it as a study guide for his quiz's. i didn't get lower that 85 on any quiz and never had to read from the book. Overall, not bad
He is great knowledgeable philosopher, very open-minded, knows his stuff. Take great notes. Apply yourself. Don't text or fall asleep in his class. (This is college) Don't be a SED student (simply educationally deficient) Tell him about that term and he will LOL! Initially appears to be a hard ass but far from it.
Hes the man . he is sooo cool ... he listen to you and make you think in a different way ... he is a very cooool prof . take every class that he teach . I am doing that . and i am doing great in his classes .. no matter what my tests are . you will not think how much he change the grade if you kept talking in class.he is the man I got A in 214 & 13
HE IS GREAT PROF DEF RECOMMEND HE HIM...MAKES THE MATERIAL INTERESTING...HES FUNNIE TOO
Made philosophy my minor because of him. Take your phil. classes from him.
A gentleman, friendly to M.O.S..
Good class. This is what college classes should be like.
Best professor I've every had in my life. He is the reason I became a phl major. TAKE EVERY CLASS THAT HE TEACHES!!! You will learn immensely from him, and not just about phl- about every topic under the sun.
Hate philosphy but taken him wasnt bad..learned alot and he's very helpful. Got a B+ would recomend..p.s. attendance mandatory..
One of the best Professors in CSI! Pros: interesting classes where there is open conversation about the subject matter, open book tests, no written homework, sometimes drops your lowest grade Cons: long tests and all essay (and identifications), a good amount of reading Tips: take a lot notes- you'll need it for the exam. Participate as much as possible, he'll help your grade if you do. Understand the topics for the exams, don't memorize. Seems like good guy. I actually looked fwd to his class.
did not like him. thought he was very unclear and boring.
My time spent at CSI has been filled with numerous professors who could care less about me, let alone my interest in their class. Professor Smith was a present surprise, I wish he taught every class i'm required to take
He is an ok professor. I dont like his style of teaching because it seems like he loves bashing the business world. Plus it seems like if your opinion conflicts with his. he gets the whole class on your case. you can take him, but make sure you pre- write for his open book exams a week before hand. and make sure you attend every class.
Okay professor tests were really hard to do well on.
his tests are hard but if you like ethics take him
CLASS IS HARD BUT IF YOU EVER NEED HELP HE WILL BE GLAD TO STAY AFTER OR MEET WITH YOU.
I think a lot of people were deterred because he's very strict and has lots of rules. You can't go to the bathroom during a test. Other than that, he was funny, engaging, and he made the class interesting and easy to understand. The tests were all essay, but were also open book.
this professor is very werid sometimes....his test are hard. he likes to talk to him self lot.if u ask someone in class a question .he makes u tell everyone in class or he wont start class .. he is boring !!!!!!!!!!!! dont not take him .
He's a very strange guy! But all in all he is very good at explaining his lessons. The textbook he uses is complex but he helps you understand them. Tests are okay.
Excellent professor. Best teacher I've had in college to date. He is knowledgable about subject matter and explains content clearly. Exams even though to be done in essay format are not hard as long as the required reading is done and proper note taking is done.
This guy is absolutely horrible, if you like high school classes you will love his class, cries about cell phones no bathroom and no speaking ever, if you do he makes a big scene and goes on forever about it. Says you'll leave early, never actually does, the most boring class I have ever taken in my history of school DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFFESSOR
This professor is terrible. Talks in circles all class and never really gets to the point of things. He gets upset about the dumbest things and is definitely not a recommended professor. If you are looking for college based classes, do not take this, no ipad or laptops allowed to take notes, no phone, no bathroom, no speaking, just constant lecture
I dont agree with the negative reviews. He is interesting and is a very helpful professor, but you won't get an A unless you listen, contribute and take lots of notes. Do not use your phone or talk in class, that just infuriates him. I definitely recommend him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! He is extremely boring, he becomes easily distracted and goes on with random stories that have nothing to do with the class lecture. He loves to put you on the spot if you take more then 5 minutes to use the restroom or even look at your phone. His tests are hard and he will do nothing to help you. Save yourself money
he is a very helpful prof. all three exams open book,Definitions, short questions, essay question. about 88% student do good on the exam. i did not becuase i am not good writer, but he give suprised end of semester, means no one will fail, and i just had his final, so easy! very very helpful, Take him!! no phone, buy books!!
one of the best, or the best professor at CSI. I'm taking him for my 3rd class and he actually inspired me to major in phl. He expects the students to be respectful like no texting and talking. tests are all open book and if you pay attention in class they're a breeze. His stories are life opening and make the class interesting.. a deff mustt!!!!
Such a great professor, will go off topic now and than, but it brings life to the class. His tests are simple as long as you keep a good note book, he gives good notes though. If you have the opportunity to take his class, do it you won't regret it.
Awesome professor! Really opens up your eyes. Im a business major and really rethinking it now. He teaches you things that would take you years to learn on your own. keeps my class the entire time BUT its so interesting that you want to stay in class. He does get off topic but that totally ok with me because he still explains the classwork.
Worst prof ever, avoid him if you can
Open book tests, if you take notes you will pass, good professor.
This guy is a total jerk - I understand wanting to have order in class, but he goes about it in a completely unnecessary way. Treats students like they are still in high school with absolutely no cell phone or laptop usage. Keeps you in class the entire time speaking about nonsense stories that most of the time have nothing to do with the lecture.
Best professor I've had during my studies. Very knowledgeable and passionate in his field. Funny and persuasive. Amazing! Anyone interested in Philosophy - will fall in love with it in his class. A definite must!
This professor is amazing! You'll never be bored in class because of how engaging he is with his discussions. He really knows all his stuff. His tests are open book so you have to take good notes. He really explains everything really well so just show up and actually pay attention. You will love this class.
This professor is an arrogant man and if he tried to cover it up it oozed out of him, especially when you have a student prepared to challenge your ideas. It was an existentialism class that was three hours and thirty minutes long. He never lets you out early and just tries to indoctrinate students on atheistic existentialism, not inspirational.
worst professor at CSI. avoid him if you can
I would honestly reccomend him for a summer session if youre actually gonna try, itd be easy. He doesnt mean bad but often goes off against religion. That doesnt make him biased though because its possible to disagree with him on everything and still get an A. Just be respectful and *participate*.Tests are open book, he makes it as easy as possible
His test is hard, man.
I loved professor smith!! one of my favorite professors
Great professor. His lectures were funny and engaging, yet still I learned a lot from the class. Don't go on your phone during his class because he will catch you and call you out on it in front of everyone. Tests were open book and notes so as long as you pay attention and have good notes, the tests should be easy.
He goes off topic sometimes. It was a 2 and a half hour class and the class could've been done early if he doesn't keep going off topic. There's 3 exams and they're all open book so make sure to pay attention and copy his notes down. And his questions are very specific so if you don't specify something he'll take points off
Doesn't assign hw. Grade is based off just 2 open book exams and the final (not cumulative!) Interesting guy and I enjoyed his class. WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING HE SAYS, not just the stuff he writes on the board! If you miss 1 class, you miss like 20% of the exam material. Pay attention and you will easily pass. Participation is a ton of extra credit!
He is good, but for 130 you have to pay attention a lot because its tough materiel. If you didnt understand certain things he would go over it a bunch of times for you to understand it. Sometimes he would get off topic but it made the lectures less boring.
take as much notes as you possibly can. write down everything he puts on the board and says during lecture. tests are open book but all essays. make sure you explain EVERYTHING you state on exams because if you dont he will take points off. close to impossible to get a perfect score on a test without him curving it. NO PHONES EITHER
Professor Smith's class is not very easy, but if you will participate and take notes as much as possible, you'll be fine, because for participation, he gives extra credit and his exams are based on notes. Very funny guy and tries to explain material as clear as possible, because he understands that Philosophy itself is not an easy subject.
Professor Smith is cool he is a tough grader but it only benefits us, you participate he will give you extra credit.
One of the best professors I've met thus far. Open book exams sometimes therefore you can get an Easy A. Gives extra credit for participation during lectures. Hilarious professor and talks about his life too. I would highly recommend him!!!
Amazing professor!! I highly recommend him. I took him in the winter. He is absolutely amazing! I wish I could take him again. Super inspirational, intelligent, and interesting. Everything he says is FACTS!
Really crazy guy. Doesn't allow any tech use in class really strict about that other than that he's really good.
Great prof! Gives extra credit for participation. Really enjoyed his lectures, gets off topic but keeps things interesting! Highly recommend for winter!
All he rambled on about was Trump and his opinions on legalizing abortion. So frustrating. The content of when hes actually on topic isnt bad. But he has no respect or filter with his opinions, as if only he has one. Other than that, tests are open book. Extra credit given if u participate. Book is required.
He really knows what he's talking about. ALL tests are open book! He get's a bit off topic though but not too bad. Doesn't let out early. just write your notes and you'll be good.
Love this class. Prof Smith is knowledgeable, funny and the class is enjoyable
Professor is funny and can be tricky at times. Great class.
