Professor Spaniel was really funny, and engaged the class in a fun yet very constructive way. He was always well prepared for class, and, even if he comes off a little strong, is a really good professor. Tests required knowing authors and titles for readings, but otherwise I felt as though I learned a lot. Great class for political science majors.
I looked forward to attending Professor Spaniel's class every week. He keeps his lectures interesting by using funny/interesting examples for terms and concepts. He also has many of his lectures posted to Youtube which makes reviewing for the two midterms easier.
A lot of reading! Spaniel makes lectures fun but can be confusing at times. Make a study group and you'll do fine, but you have to try and work hard for your grade.
Class is hard but rewarding. Really makes you think about classic examples of the prisoners dilema and transaction costs.
Class is very heavy on game theory for an intro-level course. Would probably be more difficult for non-majors, interesting lectures and topics but homework is all problem sets and data analysis.
Interesting topics, he has videos up on YouTube (good if you miss a class or are studying for exams). There is a lot of game theory with problem sets and data analysis stuff other classes didn't do. 2 exams all open-ended with 1 bonus point!
Spaniel is relatively easy. The homework can be tough, but tests are easy and all his lectures are online. Interesting class!
As others have said, his class is pretty intense on game theory, and his lectures weren't super clear on how to solve the games, but recitation helps a lot with that. He definitely tries to keep things interesting with funny anecdotes to relate concepts in lectures. Very smart and very knowledgeable. Good choice for IR.
Lectures are interesting but also posted on YouTube. The tests are easy if you pay attention to lectures and just study the major vocabulary and topics. Recitation is graded for attendance, and there are two problem sets and two data analyses assigned as homework, but there is not much help with solving these as they are not taught in lectures.
Your entire grade depends on 3 exams. He is an amazing professor and very dedicated, he teaches in a way that makes the material easy to understand. It's a class that will keep you stressed at all times because you're worried about your grade. He is fair though and helps you out if you ask or if he sees you struggling. I wish I had him for PS0500.
Overall, Spaniel is awesome. The class focuses on using game theory and algebra to explain why wars occur. The math itself is not difficult, its figuring out how to represent things mathematically thats a little tricky. There are 3 exams total, but he gives you the exact questions on the exams weeks before so you know exactly what to prepare for
Do not take PS 0500 with Dr. Spaniel. He is a genius, but he makes the content extremely difficult for an intro course. There are no tests, just 6 assignments worth 100 points each. Sounds easy but he makes them incredibly difficult. A great guy but not a good course.
He's very intelligent but his lectures have nothing to do with the 6 homework projects. Interesting lecture but if you want to have any sort of comprehension at all to do the homework you have to watch his youtube videos. Very annoying that our homework was incredibly difficult and the lectures gave no insight on how to do the homeworks
Dr. Spaniel seemed to get a lot more hate than I think he deserves. He has a lot of resources for students in his class that he created himself and he allowed everyone to work on the homework assignments together, which are the only thing your graded on. The course is taught a bit different than other sections, with a good amount of game theory.
There are only 6 HW assignments for this class. It's true that the lectures don't really cover most of the HW, but if you show up to recitations, you shouldn't have any problems completing the HW bc the TA explains it there. If you have a background in game theory it'll be especially easy. The lectures are very engaging.
Professor Spaniel knows a lot about what he teaches and creates good lectures, though he moves a bit quickly at times. There were only six homework assignments and that's what determines your grade (lowest one gets dropped). The lectures don't always coincide with the homeworks but go to recitation and you'll be okay. Overall would recommend.
I would totally recommend this class. There's no exams and only 6 homeworks which make up your grade. The lowest homework is dropped. The homeworks are pretty hard, but if you go to recitation and work with other people you should be fine. I didn't go to more than half of the lectures and ended with an A; they aren't relevant to the homeworks.
There are 6 homeworks as a grade drop your worst score. Theres recommended readings but no where near as much as your usual poli-sci course. The whole class isnt what you expect for an intro. Theres a lot of game theory and not too many case studies.
Dr. Spaniel is a super engaging professor. His class was based on 6 homework assignments with the lowest being dropped and plenty of time to work on them with peers. He has all of his lectures up on youtube so attendance is very flexible and recitations are geared towards the homework assignments. Overall really great class to take if you like IR!
Dr. Spaniel always has a lot of passion while he is reading all his power points and telling us his own stories in class. Great class overall, but always doesn't make sense on his HW. TA is very nice.
Spaniel was great - you have 6 homework's and get graded on 5. Recitation and lecture isn't mandatory, but you do the homework's in recitation so I'd go. He's very passionate about his work, gives great examples, and is an expert in what he teaches. Definitely recommend; it would be a good Gen Ed.
Dr. Spaniel gave great lectures and was clearly passionate about the subject. Homeworks were pretty straightforward and if you don't understand parts of it all you have to do is go to recitation. You have 6 and the lowest grade gets dropped, that's your entire grade.
Good prof but I honestly didn't go to class bc the lectures didnt help what so ever on the HW. You're graded on 5/6 homework assignments. Must go to recitation to get the answers/understand them.
I mostly thought this course was gonna be reading and essays, but instead it was entirely quantitative and mathematical. Nothing crazy, I'm terrible at math and could do the math well but the concepts were tricky. The class was 6 homeworks, and could work with people which made it easier. No reading or essay stuff. Either you do amazing or bad lol.
This guy is great. He teaches in a way that is both entertaining and effective. Stories that may seem like tangents are ultimately used to demonstrate whatever concept we're learning about. Also, he's hilarious and interacts with the students in his class to keep everyone engaged. Take him if you get a chance.
IR was nothing like I thought it would be, especially after having friends take it with a different professor. He is knowledgable about the subject, but he does not effectively teach the material. Questions in class and recitations also did not help clarify any confusion. I would avoid taking him if you do not want to do math or game theory.
He is an interesting professor. He relates what we are learning to real-life examples. He is a pretty salty guy but grading was fair. Our class was getting extra credits but his other class wasn't (he posts up the extra credit early in the morning prob to print) and our class went back to look. 3 exams and we get them a week early to work on it
Hey look, its the lines on maps guy!
This is by far one of the worst classes I have taken at pitt ( coming from a STEM major) HW is graded so harshly, you have to do math which actually makes no sense because how are we doing algebra in international relations? and the exams are OPEN ENDED. if you are looking for an interesting/ easy get ed STEAR CLEAR OF THIS ONE.
this is by far the most difficult class that i have taken at pitt. the professor is condescending and doesn't respond on email because he is too worried about his youtube channel to actually care about students. homework is graded unfairly and if you have the same answers as someone else somehow they will get at A and you will get a F
I went into IR with a different expectation. I wanted to learn about literal International Relations and ended up taking a Game Theory math course. If theres one word on my homework that is wrong, I get 5 points off of it when the rest is reliable. Sadly, the recitations are not useful, and they dont understand our confusion and how to help it.
William Spaniel is a good lecturer and it is very helpful to have literally the entire curriculum on YouTube, but he is not a very nice prof and the homeworks, lectures, and exams are all different in content and format so it makes it pretty difficult to keep track of everything. It's not imposible and is pretty interesting, but also not easy.
I took this class thinking it was going to be similar to the other political science core courses but it was nothing like it. We do math in about every homework and he never really shows how to do it. I would NOT recommend taking this class if you do not have to, but if you do then pick a different professor. The grading from the TA's is unfair.
I took this class to learn about international relations and I learned nothing about international relations. All of the assignments and tests vary between topics so nothing is consistent. This is the same for the grading. You can turn in similar answers for the homework and someone can get a failing grade and someone can ace it. AVOID!
Rude to people who ask questions, arrogant. Upper level course material even though its an intro course. DO NOT take as gen ed only if needed take this class PLEASE.
Dr. Spaniel's class is very easy if you are able to pay attention in lecture, are able to do basic algebra, and can operate excel to read a CSV file. Grading is very keyword based and ideally you should restate the question, in the first place, but I was overall satisfied with the TA's grading performance.
If you are in this class as a gen ed, DO NOT TAKE IT. Or at least pick a different professor. This guy was arrogant and did not seem to care about his students; if you asked a question, you either got yelled at or re-directed to the TAs. There are only 2 exams and 4 homework assignments, so you have to do well on all of them. Oh, and there is math.
Do not take this class. A mistake. Very condescending and arrogant man who boosts his ego through Youtube Channel that isn't even that successful. Going to lecture does not help with the homework AND tests. No textbook to even base your work off of. Waste of my time and horrible use of a gen ed.
This class was awful as a gen ed course, do not take it. The course is very heavy with nebulous game theory and math problems and the tests and homework had little significance as to what was taught in lectures and recitations. Assignments were assigned and graded very inconsistently. Good lecturer, but not very responsive or friendly.
DO NOT TAKE NEVER EVER IN YOUR LIFE. Professor spaniel is by far the worst teacher that I have ever had in my life. Over the course of the semester I have emailed him about my grade and he doesn't reply. He doesn't care to see his student succeed he just want to make his student life living h e l l.
by far the worst class ever. the professor only cares about his youtube channel and not his student, he doesn't reply to email at all and is the toughest grader..... mind you there is no clear criteria that they use and no KEY... If someone copies you they will get a 100 and you will get a 60 even when you have the same work... STEAR CLEARRRRRRRRR
Interesting lectures keep you engaged but sometimes doesn't connect to the homework that is given. Homework/Exams graded by TAs, so it is worth being actively engaged in recitation. Not necessarily something I would recommend as a Gen-Ed, but a great class for poli-sci/humanities majors. Watch the YouTube videos when confused, can go a long way.
Do not take this if you are looking for a gen ed. It is hard for no reason if you aren't good at logic. Everyone gets decent grades, but it's stressful and confusing.
Actually the worst professor and worst class I have ever taken do not take this teachers class. Its the professor William Spaniel who is the issue take a different professors corse. The professor just is not a good professor. And the TA's are not good, none of the grading makes sense at all
This class is not what I expected. It is way too much work for a gen ed. The whole course is very test heavy and he does not provide any study guides. All he says is “review the slides” which are easily over 1000 (for the final). Regretted taking this class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I took this because it seemed like an interesting gen ed. The professor is even a famous YouTuber which I thought was very cool in the beginning. However, homework's do not relate to tests. He does not give study guides, yet your grade is very test heavy.
ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK GOD THIS CLASS IS OVER. I took this class as a stem major thinking that it would be an interesting gen ed and that I would have enough time to focus on this and chem and bio and boy was a wrong... exams are works 50% of grade (there are only 2) and there is no answer ket or clear grading criteria DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. he bad
Horrible teacher. He was rude to students and there were homework assignments that were not based on lectures. So, going to lecture was basically a waste of time. The TAs are also unhelpful and grade the homework so harshly and don't make an effort to help students better understand the material. Avoid at all costs.
he is the most condescending person ever. i have emailed him twice over the course of the semester and I never got a response form him at all. he thinks he is better than everyone because of his subs on yt. there is no answer key to the hw so you just get you paper back and it says -15point on ONE QUESTION even though everything you put was right
Just a terrible teacher. He was rude when teachers would reach out for help. If you're looking for a gen ed, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The class is heavily weighted on tests too (2 are worth 50% of your grade) so they make or break your grade.
if you think this class will be easy just withdraw right now. get ready to explain why chat gpt is wrong just because its not copy paste of what he said in class. half of the class was basically algebra (idk how that even correlates) TAKING THSI CLASS WAS THE WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE!!!!)
DO NOT TAKE this class. I took it as a stem major because I thought it'd be some interesting gen ed to take and it was not. He was rude and condescending and put his YouTube channel over teaching this class. I mean that he never responded to emails when you would ask him for help. The TA's were slightly more helpful, but they were not always clear.
worst class that i have ever taken... TA's are extremely hard to understand and their grading makes no sense, there is no answer keys so you don't know if why you are getting things wrong. very condescending and unapproachable teacher, his lectures continuously stray off topic.
only learned two things that pertained to international relations, everything else was weird concepts that had little to nothing to do with what i signed up for. the TA's are extremely tough graders.... thanking god that its over
Prof. Spaniel's class was not what as I was expecting. Super game theory based, but lectures have no relevance to the homework, which had you doing math and game theory. Aside from the course content being all over the place, the professor was not nice and in my opinion super disrespectful. Only take if it's required for your major.
Don't take as a gen ed. The lectures had nothing to do with the homework. The tests are 50% of your grade but aren't terribly hard if you study. Professor Spaniel, however, was rude and unhelpful. I went to one office hour in which he basically said he could not help. He is highly annoyed if you attend an office hour or ask questions in class.
International relations is a difficult concept, and I believe it takes a great professor to make this subject bearable. However, this professor does not meet this criteria. He is very full of himself, and when I went to him for office hours to receive help with homework, the question he assisted me with was marked wrong.
worst class grading with an even worst professor, he is extremely full of himself and is too busy with his youtube channel to reply to his students emails. there is no clear grading criteria or rubric an homework or exams do not match what is taught in lecture DO NOT TAKE IF YOU DONT ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO
Dr.Spaniel is a respectable and nice professor. This class though is very very difficult. DONT TAKE! 3 exams all 33.3% of ur grade. Get them 1 week early, but this is still not enough time as they are challenging and the only resources are class notes, HIS textbooks, and HIS YouTube videos which are the only political science game theory resources
I think people are too hard on Prof. Spaniel. Yes, it is a bit difficult for an intro class and I would not necessarily recommend as a gen ed, but he is a very interesting lecturer and the TAs grade fairly. You just have to be willing to put in a little work, but it is worth it.
One of the hardest polisci classes but super interesting. The math itself isn't hard; the conceptualization is the tricky part. Graded on 3 exams but you get them a week in advance for practice and he encourages you to solve them with friends before the test date. Overall class average was in the 90s, I think.
This class was insanely hard for a gen ed. He was rude and did not provide many resources to study for tests besides his YouTube videos and minimal lecture notes. His TA's are really harsh graders too and the grades they give you don't reflect the effort you put in. I literally fought for my grade. Do not take this class.
I feel some of these reviews are unfair to prof. Spaniel. Not everything about the class is necessarily perfect, but the homework and exams were more than fair if you went to lecture and did your work. You get out what you put into a class.
It's simple: if you do the work and show up, you'll love Professor Spaniel. If you don't, you'll hate him. He seems a bit intimidating (pretentious at times, yelling in the lecture hall), but he actually gives solid examples and teaches the content well. History background helps but isn't required.
The class is challenging, but he recognizes that. The class is graded by three exams that are a third of your grade each, but you get the exact tests a week early to work on them with classmates. Sometimes lectures can be confusing but he has great YouTube videos that are helpful. He also grades pretty leniently. Interesting class!
This is a very difficult but interesting class, absolutely would not recommend for a gen-ed. Logic heavy, abstract lectures, and unsure if TAs are given a rubric on how to grade the homeworks. Professor Spaniel was also incredibly unhelpful and unwelcoming the one time I went to office hours, and did not impact my performance at all.
Interesting class, but definitely a little hard. He's not very helpful with homework, but the TA's can help you do it. It's a manageable class if you pay attention. I don't regret taking it, but I likely wouldn't take another polisci class.
Overall not a terrible class—lectures were moderately entertaining, attendance was not required and exams were easy and curved. Biggest issues are that 6 assignments determine your final grade, very little of what we learn was helpful on the homework, overly game theory heavy, and when Spaniel responded to questions in class it was with hostility.
Horrible professor. We were only graded on six assignments; 2 midterms and 4 hw assignments. Nothing we learned in class was on the homework, and we were given no textbook, making it difficult to do well. This class is supposed to be interesting, but was game theory heavy. Also unfair grading by the Ta's.
Took this as a gen-ed, homeworks were math based but as long as you can manipulate inequalities and read a spreadsheet they're not hard. He's also a really good lecturer
Too busy working on his YouTube channel to reply to student emails or prepare for lectures
worst class I have ever taken in my life including any high school classes.... DO NOT TAKE ATTTT ALL horrible prof which is extremely rude
Dr. Spaniel is not a good lecturer. he doesn't prepare powerpoints but instead writes in dry erase marker on the board so small you can't read it. For those who are visual learners this class will be rough. He spends all his time working on his youtube channel and doesn't have students interests in mind. Don't take him unless you really have to.
lecture isnt mandatory and he records videos that are extremely helpful, exams are easy, however he has a big ego and doesnt like when you email him, grade is only based on 3 exams, very smart i will say, overall class is easy and i recommend
There's no homework and your grade is 3 exams worth 30% each and 10% recitation attendance. Attendance isn't mandatory and he posts videos summarizing everything in the lectures, which are really helpful. All I did to study was watch the videos and I got a 97 and 99. I wouldn't recommend for a gen ed but if you're a poli sci major you'll be fine.
Rate my professor reviews are pretty overdramatic imo. Spaniel is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. I don't find him to be egotistical or rude as other reviews mention. Experience might be dependant on TA, mine was great, and you only need to attend recitation, all lectures are online, which is so helpful!
Recitation attendance and 3 exams are graded, but the final isn't cumulative. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you need to go to get a good grade. He only posts videos of the lecture topics days before an exam, so you only have your notes to study from. He puts more effort into his YouTube channel and writing a textbook than creating slides.
he's not THAT bad but i would avoid taking this class with him if possible. he doesnt use slides, but writes an outline of what he's talking about in small handwriting. the things that would be on the tests were things he only briefly mentioned in the lectures but the TAs help and don't grade too harshly. he also doesn't explain topics that clearly
The content itself is not bad, and all three exams follow the same format. Spaniel himself makes it clear that this class is not his top priority and is not accessible outside of class and focuses on his youtube channel more than this class. honestly your experience in this class depends on your TA (neither of them grade harshly)
Dr. Spaniel seems to get a bad rap due to his focus on his YouTube channel. After taking his class I can say that he clearly does care about his students. He has a clear lesson plan on the syllabus. Also no cumulative final exam during finals week, just 3 exams with are 90% of total grade while recitation is the other 10% of the grade.
He could actually care less about teaching and minimized the amount of work he had to do to focus on his other side quests. He graded on 3 just exams, provided 0 slides, notes, or supplemental assignments-- only videos he uploaded at the last second. I would not recommend this class for a Gen ED unless you have any background in IR.
Lectures are pointless. He just rambles the whole time. Entire grade is based on three exams (not cumulative). Just watch the youtube vides he posts for each exam and you will be fine. Also recitations are super helpful. Meh class.
Very little given for study material besides a few hour long videos. Class is test heavy as each exam is worth 30% of your overall grade with no assignments to do. Study the notes and look at the video transcripts he posts and you should be fine as long as you understand the vocab. Test layout is pretty simple.
Professor Spaniel is a great lecturer. His lectures are engaging and interesting and he cares about the subject matter. Unfortunately, there are only three exams for the semester and not much is given in the way of review material but if you take good notes and know your vocab it shouldn't be too hard to do well.
