You'll learn a lot of neat stuff about language in this course. Great lecturer!
Most boring Prof. Ive ever had..couldn't last a half hour w/o leaving
HATE THE WAY HE DRESSES, BUT HE'S AN EXCELLENT PROF! TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT
long winded & boring with points for effort.
Hilarious guy, very smart linguist, fun fun class who cares about how he dresses
Funny guy, clear lectures, don't know why anyone complains- I got A's
Interesting Prof. Really funny. I learned a lot from him!
He makes a grammar course about as fun as its going to be
Never sure what he was saying. His class was brain sucking.
Odd, odd man.
Great professor - very interesting to listen to.
Brilliant, hilarious, and energetic prof. HIs tests are a bit odd, but he is definitely a reason for taking a class. Anyone who thinks he is boring is either lazy or is just not trying.
cool guy, makes you think. not a hard class, just do the reading. quizzes are easy. tests arent bad. good prof- take him!
the class is boring but he made it as interesting as you can make linguistics. Funny stories and examples. Tests are open book.
Spruill is cool! I never liked any other teacher who was into linguistics..but he is great! He is really helpful, and very clear on what he expects. I give Bill an A !
good teacher. linguistics is boring but his stories are good examples and are interesting.
Self-proclaimed nerd. Isn't very clear on everything, but he realizes that and will stop class to try and make it even clearer. Realizes grammar is boring, tries to make it as interesting as possible. For some reason, likes foreign names like Bjorn.
He is a decent prof. His test are open book. His lectures are a little confuseing. Half the class had no clue what was going on, but he trys. It's grammar: it's hard to make that fun.
The class was boring and his tests were pretty hard. If he does not agree with your wording in your papers you are kinda screwed. The final exam was rediculous.
Bill's a cool guy, kinda nerdy but he's a fun guy. His tests seem to be alright, not too difficult, all are open book open note. He gives quizes almost every class period which kinda sucks, especially if you read and you don't remember what you read.
nice guy - always happy. he will drag on and on. but the tests are all open book! he is fair to slightly difficult in grading. will give an attendance quiz almost every class. gives appropriate examples.
this guy is pretty easy. spell check will be your best friend! tests are open book so take good notes... you will need them!!! all tests are cumulative so dont drink away everything from last chapter!
I LOVE this class (sue me, I'm and ENG major). I recommend Bill to anyone who takes this class. Take good notes and stay awake in class due to the open note/open book tests and you'll be fine. The papers are interesting to write as well.
Bill understands that linguistics is a boring subject in nature. He tries very hard to make it interesting and applicable. Tests are open book/note but are still hard as hell and should be studied for. If you have to take this class definitely go with him
Hella boring, but if you take good notes the tests are easy. The papers were pretty easy as well. open book, open note. Don't leave his class early or he get's pissy. quizes every day suck, but you can deal with missing a few days.
take good notes!! his tests are open book open notes, but they are hard and he gives quizzes over the reading everytime, but they are not hard at all!!! i recommend him!!
This is the most random class and professor! He's kind of interesting to listen to but is all over the place. His grading is a little weird. His accent is fun though! Tests are open book/note--thank God for that! Overall an okay class and professor.
This class was a complete waste of my time. He spent the majority of the course talking about his life int he south and the other half making impossible tests and paper topics. He is also never available to help during office hours.
Good teacher, interesting class. The course work is not "impossible"--I didn't meet anyone that got below a B on any paper or test--and the course was somewhat fun.
I am glad I took sci-fi/fantasy with him...he's so enthusiastic about it! It's a lot of reading and not an easy A, but you learn a lot and he makes the lcass fun. I never had any problem with him being at his office during hours, and he is always willing to help students.
Fun guy...lectures can be pretty boring and draggy, but he mixes it up with some southern humor and personal anecdotes. Take notes, bring your book to class, as you can use them on tests and quizzes.
This class was a waste of time. I didn't understand anything and the tests were on little things that really didnt matter to what we were learning. His projects were impossible and he is a very hard grader. DO NOT TAK THIS CLASS IF HE IS YOU TEACHER!!
Wow, is all I can say about this guy. Don't take the Grammar class with him--just don't do it. He will make you want to shoot yourself after 15 minutes of listening to him ramble and try to make jokes. He is a good guy, and seems knowledgeable..BUT THIS IS NOT the class to take with him. He makes grammar look 800,000 times worse than it already is.
Grammar isn't a very exciting topic in the first place, so don't expect this to be an exciting class. I thought Spruiell did a fine job and made it as interesting as it could be. I would recommend this class with him as the professor.
The exams and papers are very reasonable. He does hold you to the very last minute every class, so don't think you'll ever leave early. He gets off topic frequently, but overall the class is interesting. He can be funny sometimes with his southern humor as well.
He has a great personality, he's really friendly, and funny, and tries to make the subject intersting. Still, the lectures are kind of dull. The tests are open book and open note. There are only three papers, so that isn't bad.
This class is way confusing, the subject that is. He is a very nice guy, very scatter brained and very unorganized, but nice. Class is very hard to understand though.
Yes, he's a little scattered, but with some prodding he'll set dates and nail down details. He's a great teacher, and he's absolutely hilarious in a very goofy way. He comes highly recommended. He's abundantly helpful and super smart.
He is a nice guy, although this is the most boring class I've ever taken. Completely unorganized, takes over a month to grade tests/papers. Keeps you until the end of the period and then some. Sort of annoying...easy class though.
Nice guy...super boring class. Very unorganized, takes about a month to get tests/papers back. You need the book..open book/note tests, but they are still hard. 3 research papers...never lets you out early at all.
I like him, but his class was very hard! Tests were open book/open note but he talked about so much material you will miss somethings. Go to his class, sometimes they are boring but if you don't go you will miss important material. He is pretty funny and even though his material is boring he is rather animated. I like him.
doing well in class is quite easy, sitting through it is sometimes hard. tests (open notes/book) are ridiculously easy if you just listen and have okay notes. is amusing guy but sometimes gets sidetracked and that gets annoying. overall not too bad.
He was really funny and amusing, but the subject was very hard to stay awake through. If he hadn't tried so hard to spice things up with humor, I'm not sure anyone would have been awake by the end of class. He doesn't keep grades posted, and is a little unorganized, but other than that a he's a good teacher. Try to never, ever, take modern grammar.
Nice guy, kind of quirky. Makes the boring material at least a little interesting. Open to questions, always asks if everyone understands the material. Southern acent that he tries to cover up makes him fun to listen to- not your average boring lecture. VERY FUNNY, if you like dumb puns, etc. Would take another course taught by him.
He was a great teacher. Very funny, his stories make the information more interesting. He will go over things until you get them. Take him if you can, I am going to try to take him again for another class.
If you're going to take this class, DO NOT take it with him. He tries to be funny and he is, but it doesn't help with the subject matter. He is not clear when he speaks and you just sit there confused. Going to class is essential if you're going to try and understand the lectures. I never thought grammar could be so confusing.
Most boring teacher I've ever had. He talks about absolutely nothing for the last 45 minutes of each day, dragging on and on. Only five papers but he gives the most vague direction. However we had practically no due dates with chances to rewrite assignments. Grades easy. Take at your own risk. Nice but boring.
Very nice guy, but extremely boring and abstract. He is a bit disorganized and the class work got more confusing and his help got more vague. Very approachable guy, but can be a bit confusing at times.
I can't stand this guy. My original prof got sick halfway through the semester and he took over. I now hate this class he is so unorganized and just rambles on about nothing. Trying to study for my finals are impossible seeing as I have no notes. Such a waste of my time and money. Not happy.
Dr. Spruiell can be boring at times but he is a really great professor. He cares about the students and whether or not they're understanding the material. His assignments may be unclear at times (and the lack of syllabus doesn't help matters) but he allows for rewrites, even on final papers. If you attend class and participate you'll be fine.
Dr. Spruiell is a really nice guy and is willing to come in for office hours whenever you need him for help, but I often left class feeling confused about vague assignment instructions and very disorganized lectures. What was most frustrating was the fact that I liked the guy so much but disliked his teaching style and the class. Bummer.
Dr. Spruiell is amazing. One of the most intelligent professors I've had at CMU. Could probably teach most of the ENG classes, along with history, statistics, etc. His classes are a lot of lecture, but he makes them hilarious and interesting so it's like story-time. I took his Old English class for fun and I learned a ton. It was a blast.
I have had Dr. Spruiell for 2 classes so far. I wouldn't say he is the best professor, but that may be because the class was 7-9:50pm on Thursday nights. He is a really nice guy, but basically will just talk about the subject with a few things written on the board. His lectures are more stream of consciousness than a structured lesson.
Worst professor I have ever had. Material was not difficult, but never followed the textbook. His lectures were not helpful and simply linguistic rants, as opposed to teaching about grammar. He had students present for 2.5 months, and we never got feedback. Most useless and frustrating class I have ever attended.
Dr. Spruiell is amazing! Even if his lectures are boring to some (I didn't think they were) it's still easy to pass his tests. Not very many assignments, and he's a lenient grader. Highly recommend him to anyone passionate about Sci-Fi and Fantasy, he really knows what he's talking about. LONG LIVE BILL SPRUIELL!
Dr. Spruiell is a really nice guy but not the greatest lecturer. He never seemed to have a lesson plan and just winged it. The course is very interesting and discussions can be fun but sometimes run overlong and get far off topic. Assignments are fairly straight forward as he even gives a full outline for text analysis which are 20% of final grade.
Seems like a great guy, however I have not come into or left class with an understanding of what I did on the homework. He has not lectured on the homework until the day it is due, and then he most likely won't get through it all in the time we have left.
Dr. Spruiell is very honest and knows what he is doing. He is very knowledgeable, too.
super nice professor and super honest best teacher in the CMU, I strongly recommended him,
Although he is a nice person, he cannot teach well at all. He is not clear during lectures and often rambles on about things that aren't relevant. He grades papers very tough and is vague when giving feedback. I have yet to leave class knowing what we even talked about that day.
I went to every class. In a class of 25+ only 5-7 kids showed up. There are in class essays that you need to be there for, however they are preassigned. He is a very nice guy, but his voice is so monotone sometimes I would just go to class to clear my head-no joke. DO NOT BUY THE BOOKS. I wasted so much money you don't even need them. Easy class.
Really funny, nice, approachable. Little weird and kooky but great. You have to read and come to class, he does daily miniquizzes - not hard, just attendance/proof you read. He's very knowledgeable and will share a lot of cool info. But easily sidetracked. Average-above average difficulty on grading, but he's compassionate. Great outside cl
This is the worst professor I have ever had at CMU. He rambles during lecture and hardly talks about material that is relevant to exams. His exams are really difficult, too. He makes it really hard to get an A, and only gives out A's on papers if your paper is original. He is also very quirky.
Didn't make a schedule for the class so it was unclear what exactly we were doing each week. Exercises at the end of each chapter from the textbook are so confusing, and when he goes over it in class, his answers/interpretation of the questions are so much easier. If you skip class, you won't know what the tests are over. He's nice though.
This professor is quirky. He grades pretty harsh and was not helpful in office hours. I went to his office hours for papers a couple of times and still ended up with Bs at best, and that was with his advice. His exams are tricky and he rambles in lecture about things irrelevant to the course.
He is very nice and clearly knows a lot about the subject, however, he does not teach well at all. Lectures were long and boring, and he often rambled on about things that were irrelevant. Although there was minimal work for the class (readings were short and only a few short papers for a WI), I would avoid taking the class if possible.
I liked his class. Sometimes he goes on tangents in his lectures, but they are always interesting. The class is lecture heavy, so be prepared to take a lot of notes.
In ENG 271, there is a homework assignment each week but the text book he uses for them is terrible and makes no sense. His lectures are long and boring, and he loves to mention that we all look bored while never stimulating us with anything interesting to say. I really like him as a person, he's definitely knowledgable, but not a great professor.
This is one of the smartest teachers I've ever had. I think, though, that he only gets to teach English classes if he can relate it to Linguistics, so he puts a linguistics lecture in every class, which is confusing. If you're not into linguistics, ignore it; it's not on the test.
I had Bill for ENG 201 at night from 6:30-9:20... it was honestly the worst mistake I have made. He talks all of class about pointless stuff. He is a great guy just not a good teacher. He told us on our final week of class that we have a presentation that he has never told us anything about. Don't take this class. Take it with a different professor
I really fell behind on my papers and thought I would have to drop the class. When final grades came in I received a B-. This teacher is awesome, he will work with you and he takes late work sometimes for full credit. i really recommend you take this course with Will. He will help you through the course and you will pass it if you work with him.
amaaaaazing teacher
Bill is a good guy. He really is, but this is the second time I have had to take his class because if he doesn't think you're putting in 100% he will fail you. He does not explain himself very well and when you try to ask him questions he only makes it more confusing. He's a really great guy, but he just needs to work on his teaching.
He seemed like a nice guy, but was a horrible teacher. I had so many issues getting through to him, as in sending him three e-mails before receiving one response. May I also add his e-mail was sent back two weeks later. So unempathetic.
I was not a fan of this professor. I struggled with content and had a hard time completing the assignments because he didn't take time in class to explain a few of them. I have never struggled in an English class before this class. Be prepared.
If you can, I would recommend taking a different professor. The whole class was out of 100 points, and he only gives As on papers he thinks are special. If you aren't great at writing or are used to passing English classes easily, he isn't the professor for you. He does give several opportunities for revisions though, so that's nice.
He is a linguistics prof teaching a composition class. He never posts the prompts or directions to the papers, and rarely answers emails with helpful answers. When turning papers in for a first draft, he will grade it as if it were a final draft. he will only give B's and above if he is truly astounded by the paper. There's always something to fix.
It is a linguistics class with very heavy lectures. He is also a very tough grader and only gives out As for papers that he thinks are very special. There are very few points given in this class so it is easy to get a bad grade and fall behind. If I could take this class with another professor I definitely would. My whole class was always confused.
Professor Spruiell taught ENG 201 very well. He is very friendly and wants to help his students as much as possible. I enjoyed taking his course as he made sure we knew what was expected, and was flexible with deadlines. However, I found the lectures not as imperative to my learning as I already knew most of the rules in English writing.
Lectures were extremely off topic and distracted. Usually found that it had little to no connection with what we were doing in class. Very little teaching in that way. He is an awesome guy but the teaching lacked. Papers were only given A's if you went above above and beyond. Little feedback. Class dragged on and tests were difficult- curved.
nice guy, but an awful professor. basically just talked at the class for the entire semester, and it was impossible to keep up as he never stayed on topic. no one in my class every knew what was going on, and the entire class would fail every exam so badly that there was a huge curve. linguistics is hard, and this class made it impossible.
Overall he is a professor who is looking for improvement. He only has a single submission for the final drafts of the papers, which at first is daunting. After a few weeks he returns the paper for revision with notes. You are able to submit these papers revised until a final date. Very catered towards academic writing and nit picky.
As someone who isn't even interested in Linguistics, this class felt like it dragged on for hours. Professor Spruiell is a funny guy, but not the best professor. Every class was a lecture that often had no topic and useless information. He also did not follow the syllabus, rarely posted the homework he said he'd assign, and never graded essays.
Funny guy, scatterbrained to hell and back. Lectures were kind of directionless and due dates where just, whenever he felt like it. He would say he would upload assignments on a certain day and then it wouldn't be sent out until almost a week or so later (did this with the final exam too). I liked the topic and I still wouldn't take the class again
The best way to describe this class was interesting but disorganized. His lectures were intriguing but all over the place. If you can get past the lecture disorganization and focus on writing concisely (don't use “too fancy” language) you'll do fine. He gets a bad wrap, which I get, but you can tell he genuinely cares and understands linguistics
For each exam you also had to write a short essay. Exams were online. Lectures were slideshows, very boring, but the prof himself he's a very nice guy. He really cares and is passionate about what he teaches.
The lectures are hard to sit through, and I wish there was better clarification of what the papers were really about. You will not get an A on your paper unless he thinks it is extraordinary, and will not give you feedback on your papers to get your grade past a B. 80% of your grade is based off your 3 papers.
I don't understand what I was supposed to have learned from that class. The lectures were SOOOO disorganized (Let's talk about this picture of a tree I found online today) and I don't think he even knew what he was supposed to be talking about. The assignments were interesting- I did enjoy them, but sitting through his classes were torture.
The grammar class I took with him was very confusing and I don't think I learned a single thing. The final was extremely stressful and he ended up curving it heavily because everyone did so bad. Would not recommend.
Seems like a good guy, but I still would walk into oncoming traffic rather than take this class again. This class was pretty confusing, and I had to turn in like half the final blank because I didn't know what was happening. I do think he knows a lot about this subject and seemed somewhat excited to teach it.
