oh....take his class if only u wanna sleep and wanna be bored...he says everything that's on the exam is from textbook but in the real when u take the test u really don't know where the questions are from.
This class is not easy, however if you attend class, keep up with the reading and understand that these are concepts, and theory's, you can do well in it. Stewart makes it clear which concepts he will focus his tests on. Completing the assigned papers is more important than getting the assignment right.
This class is a easy A. I never went to class and still managed to pass with a B. I found his exam to be very easy, you have two midterms and he takes your best grade out of the two and one final exam. He offers 10% extra credit on your grade which relly helps. He is really nice and he is not boring at all.

If you are intelligent and open-minded enough, you will most likely get a lot out of this class. He is a great speaker and his lectures are full of interesting ideas. All the tests are multiple choice, there is very little work to do outside of class, and the lectures are enjoyable.
Professor Stewart is a very nice guy. His tests are easy (they are all multiple choice) and he is always available to help you when needed. Granted, you have to show up to class and read the books assigned, (he puts questions on the final exam concerning the outside reading), but overall he is a good teacher.
A very nice guy, very liberal. If your a note taker then you will not like his lectures. They are a bit confusing. Tests were hard.
Lectures are long and and can be tough to sit through for 2 and a half hours. He never uses the book. It's really tough to take notes in his class. He likes to talk about himself alot. His tests are pretty hard, especially since you get no study guides and are not allowed to ask if the material he is lecturing on is on the test. Take him only if yo
Best professor I have had at NVCC... mind opening and entertaining lectures. Obviously passionate about the subject and inspired me to be as well. Thank you Mr. Stewart.
Easy class. Take notes and glance over them once before each test and you will do fine. Just make sure you think ultra liberal while taking them and you will get everything right.
He was very eccentric to say the least. He was trying to apeal to our sense of understanding through alternative media and through more performance lecture. I felt his ideals were pushed as if to have an alternative agenda.Hypocrtically, he downplays our gov't & regulations yet brags constantly on how our very system made him & fam a lot of money.
I feel that he is a great teacher and that he has a unique teaching style that makes class interesting
He is NOT a hard teacher. Take good notes and dont miss lectures. plus what he has to say is beyong amazing and will benefit your future in so many ways.He is a true revolutionary.Do the ONE essay he requires you to do all semester and the midterm and final is multiple choice.Whomever had the nerve to complain has the be the biggest idiot ever.
Im so inspired because of Mr Stewart. He has taught me more than Ive learned during my education all together. I always looked forward to his class and I usually hate going to any class. I would never let him know it but he has become one of my idols!Make sure to take really good notes and he is extremely helpful so ask questions!
hes a great teacher take him. hes easy which is an easy A, plus very passinate about the subject. one of the best teachers i ever got so take him
I had him for SOC 201 and 212 and thought he was really good. He was one of those people who just 'got' stuff. He understood how the world turns around him (and you and I) and he offers you many valid and downright good points. He leans a little left and has this thing for bashing the Bush admistration. Take him! Two tests and thats your grade
Fantastic teacher, very passionate about Sociology. He believes that he can learn something from every person in class. Very discussion oriented class. He expects you to know the material, but he makes you see the world different. He sparks your passions for politics, cultures, psychology, criminology, world affairs, everything about people!
Very openminded and makes class fun. If you believe your answer on a test is correct, and can argue your point well, you will get the points. Make SURE you do all the assigned reading. Good note-taking will be a huge bonus!
Didn't learn a thing in this class- didn't have to crack a book. Endless liberal rants. Not a hypocrite though- told us to question authority and gave me points for questioning him
Do not take him!! He is crazy and goes on and on about random stuff. I hated his class!!
This professor is the best I've ever had. He offers edge-of-your seat style lectures combined with exceptional knowledge of topics, and he's ridiculously intelligent to boot. He'll change the way you see the world if you're open-minded enough to let him. He's also very kind and cares about his students a lot. A wonderful professor - take him!
Very passionate about Soc. He lectures as a class discussion which is hard in the beginning, but it gets better. Do not stress yourself out by reading the textbook religiously- he covers everything in class. 3 tests, all baout 35 ?'s multiple choice, if you get a good grade on the final exam, that grade becomes your final grade. Outstanding teacher
I think this guy is awesome and so much fun. I dont skip a class! thats gotta count for something.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.And incase if you do, dont buy the text book. He doesnt believes in teaching through the text. He makes up his own lectures and exams. He talks and talks and talks. Despite that, hes a good person but as a teacher : night mare.
This guy's a genius, anyone who begs to differ wasn't paying attention. He doesn't use study guides, but if you follow the syllabus, you'll receive a lot from this course. He's sparked my interests in social science, and in science in general. very kind, very cool, and always wears Hawaiian shirts. plus, you'll end philosophizing to Neil young.
Great professor and a very interesting class. He definitely sparked my interest in politics and sociology. Don't miss lectures and take good notes in class...he uses a lot of class discussion material on exams. No BS, he speaks his mind and voices his personal opinions, but also encourages the class to argue if they disagree. Very chill..loved him!
not good! sooo boring, you'll be bored to tears, and on top of that he just rambles on about nothing!
can't believe i took this class. i was very excited before taking this class and he competly ruined it.. i was bored outta my mind and he gives you your grade off of 3 exams..he never gives you a clear answer to your question.. rather what he feels is the right answer.. exams are hard and unpredtictable.. and he is too smart for his own good..
hes super boringgggg! basically you learn nothing from his class. you just sit there and listen to him rambull about useless stuff. and he will never let you ask him whats on his tests he expects you to know everything from his longgggg 10 page syllabus. wack
I found this class to be rather easy. All I had to do was show up & listen to what he was saying, sometimes take notes, can be boring because he is prone to rambling. Everything on the exams are things that are gone over in class. It can be helpful to go over concepts by reading what's in the textbook. Overall, this class should be an easy A.
Wasn't too bad. Didn't have to read much from the book to pass the exams. Just that sitting in his class for lecture was hard. As long as you pay attention you can get the gist of things.
He was a decent prof. Knew what he was talking about. You really just had to pay attention in class, take some notes. I read the book and found it helped for exams (which is the majority of the grades) so STUDY. he does go on tangents. he doesnt like phones. gives ambiguous answers. wears fun hawaiian shirts. bring coffee to stay awake.
If you want to watch propaganda films, analyze Beatles songs, and earn an easy A, take Stewart's class. If you want to learn about sociology, get someone else.
his sociology class should be renamed "truth 201"
He must be the most awesome professor i ever had..he is fun, open-minded, he knows what he is talking about and his class is really interesting!!2 midterms, he counts the highest grade and if your final is highest than any of the mideterms he counts the final!he gives 2 extra bonus assignments and no homework...take his classs!!!plzzz
The comments people made about him totally misguided me!This professor talks non-stop and typically tends to go off topic ALOT!I don't understand what he is saying most of the time but his exams are based off lectures! He only gives 3 exams and 1 paper so if you do not perform well on the exam, good luck on trying to pull your grade up!
Very boring class. Attendance is semi-mandatory so you have to attend. You won't learn much, so read the textbooks and take good notes on those. Pretty easy class, but sometimes so boring its hard to actually be interested in the subject. He likes to rant to be prepared. A soft binder may be needed as pillow.
He teaches in an "un-linear fashion" and he will tell you that. Basically you go to lectures, take notes and thast all you have for the exams. Its easy to get lost in the class, only grades in the class are three exams. He keeps the final and possibly drops the first two if you do better on final. No other assignments so its easy to fail this class
Very interesting class. He talks about useful things in life such as how to get rich. However, there are only 3 grades in the class each being an exam. If your final is your highest grade then that becomes your grade otherwise he averages your highest test with the final. Outside reading is a must. Easy to get a B fairly difficult to get an A.
He's a nice person to have a conversation with, but not a great professor. Three exams and one paper. A lot of his lectures have NOTHING to do with the articles and books that he assigns. If you want to pass with a good grade or you're not a good test taker, I recommend you taking someone else.
he actually cares about getting useful, thought-provoking information across to the class. there were 3 tests and no homework, so if you're not a good test taker then maybe opt out of his class. i enjoyed the lectures, and will be taking his 202 class in the fall.
EXCELLENT AND THOUGHT PROVOKING. LOTS OF GOOD AUDIO VISUAL AIDES INCLUDING POPULAR MUSIC AND FILM. IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN INTEREST IN SOCIAL ISSUES OR ARE A GEORGE W. BUSH CONSERVATIVE YOU WILL HATE HIM AND THE CLASS.
This man is the definition of a liberal, he hates Bush, creationists, and everything to do with conservatism. He rambles on and on and uses full class time to tell you about how bad republicans are, your opinion is wrong if its not his, very atheist, class is not much of a discussion, more of a lecture of his political views, i got an A, nice guy
BEST class that I've ever taken! Professor Stewart made this a class that I will never forget. His lectures were awesome!!!
Worst Teacher ever. he never stayed on task and the lecture was pointless, he takes his tests from a book called the demon haunted world but never told us to buy it or read it. DONT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!
Prof. Stewart makes you open your mind in a way most teachers wouldn't dare to try. He asks questions and discusses topics that you wouldn't hear in a normal classroom. I ENJOYED every lecture and he made the material relative. His class is hard to get a good grade in because it's only three exams and a paper but the experience was worth it.
Proffessor stewart is the best instructor i have ever had. He wont sugar coat and baby sit you!! but he will help you help yourself become an independent young adult. his class is really hard but isnt everything else in life??.. i will be taking his 202!!! best professor in NOVA & i worked my ass off, ill probably get a B+
Love this class! Uncoventional but always fun and interesting.
His class is all lecture so it may be difficult if you don't learn well with lecture. His lectures are very informative and fun. I loved this class and I am sad that due to schedule conflicts I am unable to take his 202 in the Spring.
He went off of topic during his lectures and would never answer a question directly. He was very vague and it was almost impossible to take notes because of how often he went off on tangents about random things. I would suggest finding someone else.
Very knowledgable professor, will tell you everything thats wrong with society (usually when he runs "off topic") probably the best professor I've had in NOVA. If your here in "NVCC" to get educated and learn then take him. if u want an effortless A then find someone else... his class is very serious
Professor Stewart is a really friendly guy, but that's all he is. One of the worst professors I've taken at nova, he bases his exams off of his lectures, but there's no notes to take! Consistently goes off topic and if you ask for help his answers beat around the bush and he'll give you an hour long lecture about nothing which doesn't help!!
I learned more in 2 of his classes than in I did in 30 other nova credits! if you want to learn, take him. Not an easy A at all. I am so glad i ran into such a professor in my college career. I'll most likely remember him and his class for the rest of my life. Hands down the best professor of all time in my book.
Excellent instructor. Mr. Stewart is by far my favorite Nova instructor and the best teacher in my opinion. Even if I felt his class was difficult, I still managed to get an 'A'.. I would highly recommend you take his class as I honestly believe he will change your life!
very interesting class and teaching state
Professor Stewart is a good, solid sociology teacher. It's rare that you have a teacher with good speaking/lecture skills. They might require you to listen and pay attention, but they're very rewarding and have popular appeal. The exams can be tricky if you're not paying attention, however, I definitely don't regret taking SOC 202 with him.
Know these 3 things: structural functionalism, social conflict theory, symbolic interactionism. READ THE SYLLABUS. What he says in lectures= questions on exam. Required book readings= on exam. Films in class= on exam. You will learn a lot and learn to question what you already know. He is brilliant and has a lot to offer. This is me being helpful.
Wonderful professor. Really take some time to get to know this guy. Amazing what he can teach you.
Professor Stewart is the wisest person I know. As a former psychiatrist, he understands most students better than they understand themselves. He's genuinely compassionate, tremendously inspiring, and highly intelligent... and he has a brilliant voice. I don't have the space to explain how he influenced me or about the class but take my word for it.
Let me start by saying this: if you truly want to get an education in the subject of Sociology, "SEIZE" (as Prof. Stewart would say) the opportunity and take him. He is unlike any other professor I have had at NOVA, and by far, the most exceptional. If the website would let me, I would go into more detail. Just take him. You won't regret it.
Professor Stewart is definitely known for his ability to change your way of thought. His lectures involve a lot of outside of the book information. This class is not a just study the book to pass kind of deal. I truly believe this professor cares about his students, don't hesitate to ask questions. And when it comes to exams, don't take it personal
This professor has an absolutely charming Pathos. When you understand his position in the dynamic of the class and you get to know a little bit about why he loves his subject area, you may well be swept up by the gravity of this man's teaching. I would say he has been one of my favorite professors ever, but you must work, diligently and constantly!
Professor is by far one the best teachers I've had at Nova. I always looked forward going to class even after my drives from Woodbridge. He is very thoughtful, sincere, and educated in the matter at hand. If you read the book you'll see how much knowledge he has on the subject and his teaching style is unorthodox but exactly what you need.
I'm so confused with all the good ratings. He was definitely my most boring professor! He gets off topic so often and his tests are super tricky. They have almost nothing to do with what he lectures even tho he claims the tests are based on them. The book helps only a bit. Curves the tests since we all do terribly. One easy essay. Avoid if you can!
He is the most boring professor I have ever taken! He gets off of topic rather quickly and whispers the whole time. His tests are beyond tricky, and I could not even tell you how to prepare for them since they are not based on his lectures nor the textbook. Do not take his class it will be a waste of your time and you wont learn a thing.
Super hard ! Super confused! Dont take this class if you dont want to drop your GPA!!
Tests are harder than how I study since the questions are worded differently and harder. Talks randomly esp. historic topics not having to do with sociology.
Professor Stewart knows his subject well and has a pleasant, easy going presentation style. He does NOT spoon feed answers straight from the textbook. You will have to work for your grade, but you'll actually learn something about Sociology. Isn't that the point?
Professor Stewart is a great teacher. As long as you try at all you'll do fine. The class was not very hard, but still very educational, interesting, and engaging. I would recommend this class to anyone. It turned me on to sociology in the first place, and I just graduated with my bachelor's in it.
I had originally intended to take sociology 201 and psychology 101, but after Professor Stewart's 201 class, I had to take 202. It was clear, interesting, engaging, and not very difficult. 1010, would recommend to anyone, anytime.
Great teacher! Speaks softly-sit in the front. If you are not a good note taker don't take this class. Tests solely on lectures- borrowing from someone or skipping class won't fly. Easy test if you read the questions carefully and think about the answer. He does grade on a curve- offers extra credit, just follow his instructions and you'll get an A
(8 week class) If you want a class where the teacher ATLEAST gives out study guides or posts powerpoints on blackboard-NOT HIM!! Everything is based on lecture, not even book. Not a good note taker? Don't take his class. Can't focus in class? Don't take his class. Stay absent often? Don't take his class. Can learn only from lecture? Go ahead :)
He is an amazing professor. However, the tests are tough. There is no study guide and this course requires you to think critically. I study hard, yet, I doubt myself during exams and did not do well in one exam. The test is really confusing to be honest since it seems like he set you up to fail somehow
A great mind and a friendly dynamic. At first I thought he was rather pretentious, but he is open to criticism and conversation. Never opened the book, lecture is everything (I enjoyed this aspect)
I love Mr. Stewart, I really do. He is inspirational, and his class explore/provoke your mind more than any other class. I just wish he would give students more opportunities to earn an A in his class. Exams are extremely hard and he knows it. No ones want an easy A. We have to earn it, so please let us work for it. Give us a chance !!
Great guy overall you can def learn from him. but he gives you no work its all test and they are really hard no powerpoint or notes. the tests are his lectures you can only pass if you can listen to his lectures and just take a test no other opportunities.
Professor Steward was a lot of fun. Very pleasant guy, and two of our class periods consisted of watching episodes of The Twilight Zone. There was actually a lot we watched in that class, but most days just lectures. Even though I didn't have the textbook, I got an A by listening and studying my notes. Not hard if you try.
Wonderful professor who shows he cares about the class and students. More focused on our ability to think beyond the terms and concepts and how we can internalize it to change our way of seeing the world. The material was easy. If you showed up and listened (not on your phones) you will do very well. Lectures were fun. For those who want to learn.
Professor Stewart is a good guy, but his lectures are quite hard to understand, especially since he writes everything on the whiteboard in his scratchy handwriting . The notes are also very messy and all over the place. If you are looking for a clear, clean PowerPoint you aren't going to get that here. He also uses songs to teach which was strange.
He's nice and if you're looking for an easy A take him. I think I wasted time and money in this class and I wish I dropped. One "research" paper but cannot use citations, only facts (stupid, in my opinion). Show up, sit quietly in the back and use your phone so he can't see, you'll pass. Don't by the textbook. Exams are lecture based.
I'm honestly, kicking myself for not taking this class with him sooner. While I'm not a big fan of the mandatory essay part. Every other part of his class was fascinating & inspiring. He's a very fair grader. There is much substantiative material in this class that is very useful in ones life. It's just a matter of just appreciating it. Take him.
He says its an easy A. Speaks very blandly with no emotion and makes you want to fall asleep in class. He doesn't make eye contact with students and is always staring at the wall at the back of the class. Test are 80% articles and 10% lecture. confusing.
lecture-based teaching, no group work at all. lectures are eye-opening and inspirational, professor does great job at relaying complex, generally overlooked topics to students whose majors are not social studies. very understanding and often humorous.
This guys a great professor! Most of his classes are very lecture heavy, but this wasn't a problem because of how interesting and well put together each class is. It's clear that he's very much invested in helping you expand your academic horizons, he doesn't want you to be there just to get a grade.
He's a great professor with a lot of methods from his 30 years of teaching experience. Tests are based primarily on lecture so make note of anything he defines himself or writes on the board. There's usually one assignment for the semester and he gives extra credit. Very laid back. Like a Tim & Eric character come to life! Great guy.
I think hes great, but if you want someone who will constantly tell you how to study and what to do to get a good grade, dont take him. If you want to challenge yourself a little, take his class. Not an easy A but definitely worth it.
I dont know what a typical sociology class is but with Stewart it was very interesting. Very lax, chill, great guy albeit very political.
hes an awful professor; he doesnt present powerpoints & barely writes on the board. he goes off topic and talks about his life instead of the actual lecture. all i can say is to take really good notes from his lectures / voice record them because his tests are multiple choice and its based off of his lectures, not the textbook.
I really loved taking this professor. His lectures are easy to follow and understand, but he doesn't use powerpts. As long as you pay attention, take notes, and study, you'll be fine. He doesn't force participation so his class is basically a socially anxious person's dream lol. Reading the chapters before class aren't mandatory but it's helpful.
Stewart teaches in a somewhat abstract way that will work effectively with very few people. The primary issue with Stewart is that he is hopelessly technologically inept. Multiple class periods canceled because of issues he had with zoom, difficulties uploading class notes through Canvas, and the list goes on. Would not recommend.
This class gives you no opportunity to better your grade if you don't do good on his difficult exams. I studied hard for all of his exams but all of the questions were from his lecture nothing i studied from his powerpoints or textbook was included. His class requires you to think critically. His teaching style wont work for everyone.
He has 2 midterms and 1 final cumulative exam which repeats a few questions from the midterm exams. He is very interesting during lectures and does not bore you. He is caring about his students and will always email you back regarding any questions you have. Exams can be difficult but if you pay attention to lectures and take notes, you will pass.
Definitely would not recommend him to anyone. Most of the class time is him reading off a PowerPoint and getting sidetracked with questions. Material taught in class is practically non-existent on the exams. The exams are confusing and awful. Don't bother buying the textbook cause he might have an online version. Nice guy, but bad professor.
He is a truly nice guy but not a good teacher at all. The exams are confusing and the average score was a C or lower. You have to reach/guess for a lot of questions cause it's not explained. I felt lost during his classes and defeated after exams. The text and videos don't help at all really. This class takes up a lot of time and causes stress.
Great guy, with very interesting lectures. His tests were difficult, but he went over them with us afterwards. Some technical issues with Zoom. As long as you submitted a short statement he mentioned in the syllabus, he'd bump your grade up if you were on the cusp (I got a 79, bumped up to an 80). Provided free access to the textbook.
Professor Stewart is very knowledgeable about the material he teaches, and is a nice guy. His lectures are interesting, and clearly taught. However, thats about where the good runs out. Your entire grade is based on two exams, and the final. He drops the lowest exam score. This means if youre a bad test taker, youll have a hard time.
This professor filled in for another professor who had to go on leave. He did not follow the syllabus, spent 2 lectures repeating the same information, went on about the origins of the female orgasm during a lecture that was meant to be about cohabitation, did not respond to emails. Don't know what he's like in other classes. Do not recommend.
Initially, I enjoyed taking Prof. Stewarts class until the first exam. Exam is full of trick questions to the tiniest detail (i. e. one wrong year/date from a historical event). Plays music too loud and has attitude at times. Asked him questions hoping to get specific answers, but gave too vague answers. I dont recommend him to any student!
The class can be hard bc you're graded on three exams (two midterms and a final, but the lowest midterm is dropped). Professor really wants you to do well though and is always open to discussing questions or anything you might find confusing. Very, very caring guy with thoughtful, philosophical lectures. Reading textbook helps a lot with exams.
