West Civ.: Smartest man I ever met. Can teach you things you never heard of. A lot of reading, but very worth it. This man changed my major after taking this class he made it so great!
Dude truly pushes the limits of his students, forcing (and guiding) your mind into areas and analysis of literature you would not normally consider. Class discussions are the best part of the class.
He lectures in class, assigns reading that he requires all students to have prepared questions to have ready for a class discussion. The class discussion is the students asking each other the prepared questions. Smart guy, difficult class.
Dr. Stockton is incredible. I took his WC class first and then all the other courses he taught. He's well educated and his enthusiasm for the topics makes you want to learn the material. The readings are many but worth the discussions they create. If you have the chance-take one of his classes!!!
Stockton has an obvious enthusiasm for the topic, however, his organizational skills are lacking. When comparing several topics and different religions, clarity is important. Plus, I was expecting a class that covered the basics of all major religions, however, he gets too caught up in details.
He loves everything that he teaches and you can tell. He does go on and on about some things that he still doesn't really know about, but he is still learning about Asian Civilization. His tests aren't that hard since he'll give you the test questions before the test and then pick them out of those. I highly recommend his classes!
Don't know if he's still teaching this class, but if so, take it. Very interesting discussions.
Awsome teacher. One of those classes I thought I was going to hate. Turned out to be the best one I've taken so far.
enthusiastic as can be. may linger on a subject to long but will not be upset if you tell him.2 part grade on in class discussion and testing which may or may not come from textbook. good class and teacher though.
he is very unorginized and goes on and on talking its hard to take notes over it all. The tests are with 300 points and 30% of you great each.. three of them and the final. They are esseys but you do get the question before the test so its not that hard but it take a long time to study for them
He loves what he does. Simple as that he is very intergetic, he jumps from one point to another making it hard to understand him and while you are in the discussion he will get off subject very fast
Stockton is awesome. I really like this class. *note* Do your discussion questions, and talk a lot during the discussions...you can gain MAJOR points here.
Stockton is a cool teacher. He is as real as they get. I had him in Fall 04 and he rocked.
The readings he chooses are so unhelpful and hard. This class was very hard for me. (medieval history)
Really cool teacher, and his lectures really help you understand the reading material so don't think about skipping out. To do well in this class you have to do all the readings and discussion questions to understand what is going on. Essay tests. Not a breeze through course.
Worst class I've ever had. He seems biased towards certain favorites in the class. Attendance is crucial. Readings are crucial. If you don't do 100% of the work you wont get a good grade. Test are worth a lot and very difficult. It's all lecture and discussion every week. He can get terribly off topic. Screws you on grades and not helfpul.
HORRIBLE CLASS. I have never read so much for a class. I went every day, took notes, and actually did the assignments and didn't get a good grade at all. He has his favorites, and brags about how well they do. His lectures are bad. He doesn't write anything on the board but names and dates. This man is very hard to follow. DO NOT TAKE.
Best teacher I've ever had. Really wants you to learn. not a pushover though. involves a lot of reading that you need to do. but the info you learn in this class is priceless. Just need to participate in class cuz 90% of the class is class discussion of what you read.
he is not good teacher
This class took a lot of work, but it was interesting and a nice change from my other classes. The readings were not easy, but he did his best to make sure you understood them. The student lead discussions were killer for someone like me who just likes to sit back and listen in class. If you have take West Civ, take it from him.
Love him, love him, love him! he gets into his classes and enjoys history. Always willing to help and will go out of his way to do so. Plus, he has a PHD in this stuff. I'll take any class from him.
he is the best teacher i've ever had. he has lots of knowledge on the material, is always prepared for class, and really engages the students. it is a hard class and i read about 8 hours each week, but i got an A. if this class is required, take it with stockton, i don't think it gets any better.
the best history teacher i have ever had. be prepared to read.
He could be a good teacher, but simply is not. He teaches a class about highly interpretive material and then dictates what this material means -- he does not encourage new ideas or the use of one's own viewpoints or opinions on the material. The class was a big ego boost for him, and that's about it. I will never take a class from him again.
Great professor!! Tons of reading and most of grade is based on your participation in discussion. Hated the class loved the teacher. Highly Recommended!
Stockton is smart and funny. Do not take his Western Civ class if you aren't willing to go every day, read the material and talk in the discussions. The discussions are crucial. Not a great lecturer, but very knowledgeable. Easily one of my favorite professors ever. Take his classes if you want to learn.
He really likes to hear himself talk. He has to have everything done a certain way, and even if you ask a question a way he doesn't like, he makes you re-ask it the way he likes it. Extremly controlling and picky. He has favorites, and if he doesn't like you, don't expect a good grade even if you do all the homework. Biased Teacher. No good!
Brilliant teacher. Don't join this class if you plan to slack. LOTS of reading and LOTS of class discussions. The man is quite simply a genius
Ugh......
I thought he was a great teacher. Forced to pay attention and take notes. Forced to attend class regularly, but that's what we're in college for, right? Loves students who show an effort in the class.
I have to say, Stockton grew on me. He's very scatterbrained and it's difficult to take organized notes from his lectures, and for that reason I didn't like him at first. But he's very passionate about the subject and he makes it relevant to the present, and even though I normally don't like history, I really enjoyed his class.
I dreaded going to this class everyday, he seems like a nice guy, but his idea of what we can accomplish is completely unrealistic!!! He is really interested in the subject so he can make you excited, however when it comes to the homework it stresses you out!!!
A lot of fun if you can keep up with him.
What a fun class! Class discussions can either be really interesting or go completely off topic - but as long as you read the material and come to class prepared - and discuss you should be fine. Dr. Stockton is a smart cookie
Stockton Is a great teaches. Knows what he is talking about. If You take his class Just remember that there will be a lot of reading; however, the reading is from section from the book. It might seem overwhelming but Stockton will always help you through it.
I thought Stockton was great. He is passionate about what he teaches and you'll do well if you put effort forth. I'm sad that I didn't take Western Civ 1 with him as well!
This is my third semester in a row taking Stockton and I'm not the only person to do so. Stockton is brilliant! He's a comedian & charismatic enough to keep you interested in even the most dreadful subjects. Makes me want to be a PROFESSOR. Each semester I finish with Stockton leaves me with a feeling of fulfillment and enlightenment. He ROCKS!
I have seen many radically different views. West Civ. 1. Dropped it. He seems like he is well intentioned, nice, and intelligent however, he is a Ph.D in disguise. Teaches above his students and little structure. Your on your own for the readings and discussion in which both are very difficult, near impossible. Not for your average student.
One of the best professors I've had, ever. You have to read, and read a lot, just to be prepared for class, but discussion /is/ your grade. Knowledgable in every subject he teaches, you will always find that you actually /learn/ something in his class. Not a professor for those needing an easy grade for a requirement.
Stockton tries to be a good teacher. He is certainly extremely knowledgeable. He's also incredibly biased & wants students to regurgitate his views. Discussions are very difficult to get A's in unless you're one of his pets. Very hard to follow his lectures. He sends his exams out via e-mail though, so they're easy if you prepare enough.
Hands down best teacher I have ever had. I had him for ancient Greek history and history of Turkey and I learned so much. He is a really funny guy and he takes so much interest in his students. he loves his job and this obvious. to everyone in the class. I wish I could take even my math classes from him. Im sure I would learn something. TAKE HIM!!
Hands down the best professor I've ever had. The subject matter is interesting, but the way he teaches it makes it a genuinely fun class, and you finish the class a much more intelligent person than you were when you started it. He takes interest in every student, and if you need help he's more than happy to give it to you.
You don't find a teacher like this every day in the midwest. As a class and instructor, this will change your life forever. Don't take his class if you don't want to be in school in the first place.
This is a difficult class. Participation and mastery of the material in the books assigned is a must. There's no other way around it. Requires a lot of time outside of class. You get what you give! So work hard.
Stockton knows his stuff and expects you to do the same. The discussions can be fun, but the lectures are hard to follow. The material is captivating but challenging so take it upon yourself to become familiar with it. The most difficult class I have yet to take, but the guy has a point, you will be smarter by the end.
I had to take this class as a requirement, but I really enjoyed it! Yes, you have to be able to discuss things, and it can be intimidating, but Stockton is not intimidating. He tends to get carried away while lecturing because he loves the stuff, but is also very helpful out of class. Be prepared to work and attend all the classes though!
Very smart and passionate about western civ. Lectures are hard to understand but if you participate a lot and take notes on discussions you will be fine.
Great teacher!!! Everyone should take Stockton!!!!
he is not a very good teacher do not take his class if you are not a talker :(
Stockton grows on you if you remain in class. He rambles and gets off topic, however he knows what he is talking about. Discussions are easy as long as you prepare and do a little studying outside of the class. Cannot fall behind because it is so much info. Tests are easy gives the questions beforehand.
While I was nervous for this class in the beginning, it quickly became my favorite class. Yes, there is quite a bit of reading, but it is worth it. You have to analyze his lectures to get something of substance out of them. You MUST talk in each discussion about 6-8 times and ask a question to get an A. It was challenging, but SO worth it.
I took Stockton for both my Western Civ classes and he is great! You will have to read a fair amount but if you work hard and talk in discussions you'll do fine. He is one of my favorite professors and is a great person as well.
I was really excited to take this class because it was a subject that I really enjoyed but after starting the class, it was awful. He's not a good professor, he doesn't have his facts right half the time and the class is so boring that no one pays attention. I don't recommend his classes. Although the test review is the actual test, which is nice.
Even though Professor Stockton knowledgeable and passionate about this class, his class is disorganized and super confusing. He doesn't really make what he wants your assignment to look like clear. Also, his tests are awful and pretty difficult.
If you aren't into Buddhism, Hinduism, Daoism, etc., do not take this class. This is what you cover and more. It is really confusing and he jumps around between religions when you are only focusing on one that week. He also adds in personal experiences that throw everything off. It's confusing. Tests are all short answers. Several tough discussions
Tests are factually based. Lectures are synopsis's and stories, but always very entertaining. It will take you an hour to study for his tests f you know how to use google, so it's an easy A, plus he is an amazing guy. Loved this class.
His tests are hard and the class requires you to read sections of a new book every week. If you try and participate in discussions you are golden. The tests are all about analyzing the material you read through the semester and aren't easy, but they are do-able if you try. I dreaded this in the beginning, but turned out he is one of the best
Participation gets most of the grade in discussions. Talking to a few friends, it doesn't look like it takes that much participation to get an A for the discussion. They would only say a few things and get an A. I never understood the test grading. He gives you the questions before hand and I prepared but never did as well as expected.
I did not enjoy this class but Stockton is an awesome as a person. If you do not enjoy reading or talking in a discussion steer clear from this course. A lot of talking is required in this class, so if you are shy you will not pass. A lot of the text was very difficult for most to read.
You have to read a book pretty much every week. Make sure you are there for the discussions or you won't pass. As long as you're ready to participate you will do fine.
Religions of the East - He rambles a bit. The information could be better organized as he jumps around a lot. His goal is to give you information. Grade is primarily from participation in the discussion. If you contribute you will do well. The test are take home short essays. Very passionate and a true expert in the field.
Dr. Stockton is one of the most knowledgeable and enthusiastic instructors I have ever encountered. Classes are interesting and he makes them a living experience in his method of teaching.
This is an amazingly smart teacher. He knows everything there is to know about history and religion. I will be taking more another class of his. However, be warned. You must be prepared to read A LOT. I have never had a teacher expect so much reading before. And he makes you work for an A. He isn't an easy grader at all.
William Stockton is my favorite professor at JCCC. He is the most engaging and enthusiastic educator I have had the privilege to learn from. I took his Religions of the East class for humanities and was blown away. After that I took his Greek and Roman history for fun. He is a wealth of knowledge and experience, fantastic attitude, and cares.
Stockton is really passionate about his courses which is awesome, but the lectures were long and drawn out with little explanation. Going off topic was the usual in everyday class. However, the exams are the exact same as the reviews so passing the class is very easy.
I've had Prof. Stockton for a few classes. He's hilarious and will keep you awake. Likes to poke fun at students, so be able to laugh at yourself a little. He's extremely passionate about what he teaches (especially medieval history) and it shows. He's usually a couple minutes late and fairly disorganized, but it's worth it. He knows his stuff!
Stockton is a great professor. He is really engaging and makes a boring class interesting. There is a lot of reading, but its worth it. I hadn't finished a book in years until his class. So don't let that detour you. If I wasn't transferring I'd happily take one of his classes again. He also genuinely cares about his students.
Great professor, one of my favorite during my time at JCCC. He is extremely engaging and passionate. I would say to prepare to dig deep into assignment guidelines for the essays. I love him!
Lectures are not clear and structured, so you levae class not having really learned the content. Weekly readings are the only thing that help. A lot rambling. Shows clear bias against Abrahamic religions and makes snide comments often. Weekly quizzes, 2 essays per semester and test are identical to study guides- only positive.
Fantastic Professor, very funny and personable. Quizzes are weekly and right out of the book, and you leave the class really feeling like you understand how the human race took the turns that it did to become a superpower. He gives several real life examples of everything. The only downside is that he's not very willing to work with students.
Have to read a book every week and have a discussion over it. Do the assignment, write the question, participate and you'll be fine. Awfully boring class though. Not very friendly towards other opinions which is supposedly what the whole class is based upon, incredibly suggestive. Time consuming, don't take with harder classes.
His classes are great and he is an amazing Professor. If you are not the hardworking type do not take his Western Civ. Course, there is a novel a week with discussion and 2 large essays throughout the semester. He is very intelligent and can teach above his course work from time to time. His classes are not for the faint of heart but he is great.
Hands down, one of the worst teachers I have had at JCCC. You leave class without learning anything and everything he talks about doesnt really help you out for the tests. Only good thing is that the tests are take home. I would not take him again.
Decent guy but not a great teacher. No 'definite' notes. Some days, he will pull up pictures from google and just talk about it the entire class period. None of it really helps you out at all. Tests are take home and mostly simple. You will still pass even if you don't show up for class.
Be ready to read a different book every week and have a discussion in his Western Civ. class. His classes are extremely interesting. He makes a good point of connecting past events with the present. I super appreciate his insight and overall knowledge.
Dr. Stockton is an interesting professor. He does not give very clear direction on just about anything. The two assignments you get points from are discussions and exams. Both are worth so many points that if you miss one thing, it's already a B. Just make sure that you make him clarify EVERYTHING. He is very forgetful. Would not recommend.
Stockton has a strange way of lecturing. He uses his own sources that he wrote, but he's very intelligent and you can tell he's qualified to teach the class. You wouldn't really have to attend lectures, but attending discussions are a must. Discussions and tests are the only thing you get points from and they're both hard. You have to read a ton.
Worst teacher I have had in college. All the class is lectures, you cannot understand what he is saying, he is very offensive, and rude. He is knowledgeable, but does not know how to teach. This class has an absurd amount of points, so if you fail an exam, it will be difficult to raise your grade. He expects you to know all the material already.
Would spend most of the class rambling about one thing or another. Very knowledgeable? But awful at actually teaching the material. Most of the latter half of the semester was spent pitching for the college trip to Greece.
Dr. Stockton is one of the finest teachers I have ever had. He cares deeply for his students and always makes time to help out whether it is for the class or not. His classes are lecture heavy but they are extremely informative and entertaining. He has an excellent ability to focus on fine details and relate it to the bigger picture.
he published our canvas page a week late. day one of class I ask questions about his weird teaching style(due dates, exams, etc.) and am loudly condescended upon and given non-answers. after day 1 my grade is a 67% with no assignments posted. i ask him about it and he says he cant change it for the rest of the semester. i did not last even a week.
Professor Stockton is very lecture heavy, but fortunately tests are take home and stupid easy. He makes a point to be mindful, caring, and respectful. If you can handle the older-generational type of demeanors then I would recommend his class.
He was a nice older professor who just wants everyone to listen to history. Take the free time to study, but also listen to him.
Very old, makes a lot of errors in both his lectures and on tests. His lectures are very unclear and all over the place. Tells students to go see a tutor instead of answering their questions. Study guides are nothing like the test, all test are done on paper in class. No assignments other than reading one of the TWO textbooks he makes you get.
His lectures have zero structure, its a google doc he reads through. His lectures are rambles that make zero sense. You HAVE to go to the tutor regularly to even have a chance of passing the class and even the tutor is lost half the time. He is rude as well. The majority of my class is failing and he blames us.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! Trust me, this was the worst class I've ever taken. This guy is so old he forgets literally everything and he should not be a teacher anymore. Super test heavy but don't even bother because the test will look absolutely nothing like the study guides. All he does is read off of a google doc and he doesn't try what-so ever
Part 2. Please do not take this class. I needed a 80% to pass this class and the test was absolutely nothing like the study guide he pro
Messed up. I needed a 80% and when the entire class starts taking the test, we realize it is absolutely nothing like the study guide besides the map and even then it was off. The worst professor I've ever had he's rude, confusing and probably can't remember his last name. I beg that the tutor will show these to someone higher up to fix this.
